No suponía ningún peligro. Lose Weight Without Dieting or Working Out By Amazon Customer There is lot of valid, helpful and interesting information in this book. However, the title is nowhere close to the truth and VERY misleading. The DEM system requires you to be vegan for 3 weeks. How is that not an extreme diet?! I understand eating healthy is a lifestyle change that would be required...but vegan?! Unless you were already vegan or planned on being vegan, this is not something most of us are willing to maintain, and if you don't maintain it wont you gain the weight back when you start eating meat/dairy again? Isn't that yo-yo dieting? With that being said, I did incorporate the detox methods, add a green drink (with protein powder), lots more veggies and fruit,no dairy or sugar, cut down on meat to once a day, and I still lost 5 pounds the first week. I basically incorporated the DEM system into an eating plan that I can continue, and I feel great! I really learned a lot from this book, and look forward to future results, but understand that it is a diet and lifestyle change. And oh yea, there's a whole chapter on "moving", which is code for exercise. Not putting in a full workout, but tips on how to get extra movement in during the day. That didn't shock me because realistically you can't expect to lose weight without eating healthy and exercising. It's simple math..calories in vs calories burned = amount of weight lost! There's no magic pill or big secret. You have to put the work in, and this book gives you tips and steps on how to work smarter instead of harder.

I started on the DEM system on Feb. 5th at 203 pounds, now on Feb. 27nd, the scale said 184. I've lost 19 pounds in 22 days on phase 1 of DEM system. It works. The hardest part was giving up the sugar, but I ate a lot of fruit to get through the hardest part of the Detox phase. I also called it DEM-Lite because I avoided all of the foods except chicken. I would eat some chicken on my salads but other than that I did pretty well. If I had gave up chicken in my salads I would be visually missing by now. I didn't do the green drink everyday as required but still got great results! I plan to add the green drink very soon, but I am feeling really great now. I plan to continue the eating selection life style changes going forward.

Hacked... as soon as I started this book, I told myself now I have got to be nice to those weirdos who private message me. Holy crap!Once again, Tim Miller made my skin crawl and had me shuddering. His mind is this wicked, messed up, horror making factory. Where does he get this stuff. Just remind me to always answer his messages. Lol!This book is twist and turns of gore and horror. Things you never thought of, happens to these victims at the hands of a sycophant. Why? Well, that's easy, they disrespected him by either not answering his message, or turning him down. With that, he goes and shows them just what happens to those who get on his bad side. What happens in the van, stays in the van... maybe.Bravo, Tim! I love how he give us the chance to see the horror from every characters pov. The writing flows, and you have to see what happens next. On to the next!

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. OMG!!! That was the most twisted sick ... By WildaboutbooksTJ OMG!!! That was the most twisted sick s*** I have ever read and I found myself wishing it was a horror movie!! This is my first book by Tim Miller and it certainly won't be my last!! After reading it I don't EVER want to join a dating sight or even talk to anyone I don't know online, this story scared me that much because it could be true, and that is the scariest part!!! You definitely want to read this story if you are a fan of gory, crazy, and demented things that go bump in the night, only this guy could be lurking on the other side of your computer!!!

8 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Awful By Maria Williamson She was driving and hit the "breaks". She was "to" tired. Can you say "editor"? Seriously, the story was hurried and lacked detail for the imagination. The poor spelling and sentence structure is very distracting, too. How does this guy sell books at all? I won't buy another one of his.

There were many errors I had to overlook to get through this story. The characters needed a little more development. They started off one way but by the end of the book I felt like I wasn't even reading about the same people. It wasn't because if growth but because they just weren't written well.

Dennis Lehane, the New York Times bestselling author of The Given Day and Live by Night, returns with a psychologically and morally complex novel of blood, crime, passion, and vengeance, set in Cuba and Ybor City, Florida, during World War II, in which Joe Coughlin must confront the cost of his criminal past and present.

Ten years have passed since Joe Coughlin’s enemies killed his wife and destroyed his empire, and much has changed. Prohibition is dead, the world is at war again, and Joe’s son, Tomás, is growing up. Now, the former crime kingpin works as a consigliore to the Bartolo crime family, traveling between Tampa and Cuba, his wife’s homeland.

A master who moves in and out of the black, white, and Cuban underworlds, Joe effortlessly mixes with Tampa’s social elite, U.S. Naval intelligence, the Lansky-Luciano mob, and the mob-financed government of Fulgencio Batista. He has everything—money, power, a beautiful mistress, and anonymity.

But success cannot protect him from the dark truth of his past—and ultimately, the wages of a lifetime of sin will finally be paid in full.

Dennis Lehane vividly recreates the rise of the mob during a world at war, from a masterfully choreographed Ash Wednesday gun battle in the streets of Ybor City to a chilling, heartbreaking climax in a Cuban sugar cane field. Told with verve and skill,  World Gone By is a superb work of historical fiction from one of “the most interesting and accomplished American novelists” (Washington Post) writing today.

World Gone By: A Novel (Coughlin Series Book 3), by Dennis Lehane

Review Dennis Lehane's speciality is the fast-paced gangster thriller that's also a deeply felt novel. His latest, about a Boston criminal, doesn't disappoint on either count... I guarantee that all you'll be able to do is keep on turning the pages. The prose crackles with Chandleresque jokes, the narrative never flags and there's even a genuinely heart-stopping love story. In addition to all that, the book beautifully evokes the entire era of early Thirties Prohibition America Reader's Digest This is a book that should put [Lehane's] name right up there where it belongs, right up there alongside Doctorow and Dreiser Scotland on Sunday This is noir with added value: Lehane is terrific on family ties and at conveying the buzz of a city powered by immigrant labour of often dubious legality Guardian Lehane's tough, muscular prose captures the era well; and his dialogue brings to life the inhabitants of its underworld Spectator This is not just brilliant period crime writing but brilliant writing full stop Independent Sophisticated, literary and barbed enough... it makes this book a sentence-by-sentence pleasure. You are in the hands of an expert. And you'll know it Scotsman A masterpiece by the crime writer's crime writer, this is the finest novel of the year with a spare, stark edge that cuts into your very soul ... No one captures menace quite as elegantly as Lehane, nor understands the mob better ... Boardwalk Empire on speed Daily Mail Dennis Lehane just keeps getting better ... a lost America of sharp suits and sharpshooters brilliantly to life Mail on Sunday A pure, hard example of the gangster genre, its moments of violence gleaming like sun-bleached bone ... it's the moral conflict raging within Coughlin that makes this book so satisfying The Herald Echoes of The Godfather abound, but between the mob showdowns you are reminded too, of literary novels tracing a man's inexorable advance towards death ... impressive Sunday Times

From the Back Cover

“Lehane writes convincingly tensely . . . powerfully.”—USA Today

Late spring, 1943. The world is at war but the American mob is in its heyday. Former crime boss Joe Coughlin now works as a consigliere to the infamous Bartolo Crime Family, effortlessly handling their interests in Tampa, Boston, and Cuba. In the decade since he lost his wife in a cascade of bullets, Joe has made a home for himself and his son, and once again forged everything out of nothing: money, power, a relationship with a beautiful woman, and a privileged place in Tampa’s shadowy underworld.

But a rumor surfaces that someone wants Joe dead. And he has only days to figure out who, or he will die. And then there’s the ghost—a young boy who appears on the fringes of Joe’s vision and seems to be trying to tell him something. Racing against time and fate, Joe hurtles through a violent yet intoxicating world on the brink of total collapse or epic triumph, a world on the cusp of reinvention and rebirth—where the old codes, the old sins, and the old dreams may soon be swept away once and for all.

“The novel’s plot is as complex as its morality.”—Daily News (New York)

“Lehane has Elmore Leonard’s ear for dialogue.”—Miami Herald

He is trying to stay out of the limelight and away from violence for the sake of his young son, Tomas. When Tomas was just 2, Joe's Cuban wife was killed in the wake of a mob related attack. Tomas is a quiet, gentle boy and Joe is trying to protect him. When a woman in prison for murdering her husband get's a guard to summon Joe, telling him she has some important information for him, he's curious. It seems she has heard from a good source that Joe is the mob's next target. Joe is not sure what to think. This is a story that has a great hook early on and held my interest. However, there are several different threads running through. Lots of characters, and locales of Tampa and Cuba, plus back stories to keep track of. It's mostly a dark story, extremely well written with plenty of action, politics, corruption, violence, scandal and sex. There was a surprising wrap up as well.I wouldn't recommend reading this as a stand alone, as you'd be missing the back stories about Joe's dad and brother as Boston cops when Joe was just a child, as well as Joe's days at the top of his game as a crime Boss. Overall a busy but enjoyable read. Recommend for readers who enjoy historical crime fiction.

I had finished the previous Joe Coughlin novel last year and was pleasantly surprised to see another one coming out so soon. I cannot say enough about this book. It ends all of the sub plots from the last book without it feeling forced. The novel never stops and you cannot stop turning the pages. I finished it in one day and was disappointed that it was over. It is a great novel by a great author. I did not read the first book in the series but am going to start reading it now. I have read most of Mr Lehane's other series and I have to say that this is the best of them. The characters are rich and the story keeps moving. I have some other comments but these comments would spoil the book for others. I highly recommend that you read this book.

14 of 16 people found the following review helpful. Crime pays - up to a point By plane World Gone By is a continuation of "Live By Night" which is perhaps the only flaw in a fascinating novel by Lehane. The book brings the characters created in the first book ten years into the future during the time of the Second World War and without the information of the first novel there is a loss of continuity that the reader will miss. Joe Coughlin who had built an empire for the crime family he worked for in Boston in Tampa, Florida sees his work destroyed and his beloved wife killed in the first book, and is now the consigliere to the Bartolo crime family traveling back and forth for them between his home base in Tampa to Cuba. Joe works with and meets the mob families of Meyer Lansky, Lucky Luciano, connections with naval intelligence as well as the mob financed Cuban dictator Batista. Lehane describes the rise of the mobs during World War Two, the murders, public official corruption and the intercine battles between the mob families. A gun battle on Ash Wednesday on the streets of Ybor City, Tampa is described in exacting detail bringing to life the violence and the complete disregard of law and order of the mobs. The ending serves up a picture of ultimate payment by many of those that have lived a life without regard for the rights of others. It is another superb read served up by a master of his craft. Very well done.

In 1852, when prestigious Alabama plantation owner Cornelius Allen gives his daughter Clarissa's hand in marriage, she takes with her a gift: Sarah―her slave and her half-sister. Raised by an educated mother, Clarissa is not the proper Southern belle she appears to be, with ambitions of loving whom she chooses. Sarah equally hides behind the façade of being a docile house slave as she plots to escape. Both women bring these tumultuous secrets and desires with them to their new home, igniting events that spiral into a tale beyond what you ever imagined possible. Told through the alternating viewpoints of Sarah and Theodora Allen, Cornelius' wife, Marlen Suyapa Bodden's The Wedding Gift is an intimate portrait of slavery and the 19th Century South that will leave readers breathless.

The Wedding Gift, by Marlen Suyapa Bodden

From Publishers Weekly In this stunning debut, Marlen Suyapa Bodden effortlessly transports the reader to 1852 Alabama, where slavery and racism may rule the day, but everything isn't as black and white as it may seem. Sixteen-year-old Sarah Campbell is a housemaid to her half-sister Clarissa. Both daughters of plantation owner Mr. Allen, they secretly reject the roles they are expected to play. Sarah yearns for the day when she can escape slavery, while Clarissa is disinterested in her father's wishes for her to marry young and become mistress of her own plantation. But then Clarissa unexpectedly becomes pregnant before she's wed-changing the trajectory of both girls' lives. Bodden weaves a page-turning tangled web of misogyny, greed, scandal and violence in this powerful story about races colliding against the backdrop of America's darkest era.

From Booklist In her first novel, lawyer Bodden draws on an immense amount of historical knowledge to present a tale about life in pre–Civil War Alabama that is as educational as it is compelling. Clarissa is the legitimate daughter of Cornelius Allen, a wealthy plantation owner. Sarah is also Allen’s daughter, the product of his long-standing extramarital affair with Emmeline, his beautiful house slave. Sarah narrates the novel in turns with Theodora, Allen’s wife, who is frustrated by her own lack of agency. Theodora secretly teaches Sarah to read and write, sharpening Sarah’s hunger for liberty. When flippant Clarissa gets married, Sarah is given to her as a gift, sparking events that upend life at the Allen plantation. Bodden writes with delicacy, allowing layers of meaning to unfold slowly, and her portrayal of the horrors of slave life is both unflinching and purposeful. The connections developed between Clarissa and Sarah illustrate the complex sorrows of tyranny, and the ecstasy of triumphing over oppression. An inspiring read for historical-fiction fans, especially those who like strong female narrators. --Amber Peckham

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Two Sides of American Slavery By Amazon Customer This is the story of two women; Sarah Campbell and Theodora Allen. Sarah was born in 1846, a slave at the Allen Estates. Theodora Allen married Cornelius, the master of the plantation. Sarah is also the bastard daughter of Cornelius, half sister to Theodora's Clarissa. Sarah's mother Emmeline only goes to Cornelius' bed to ensure her children will stay on the plantation. Despite the feeling of betrayal, Theodora comes to care for both Emmeline and Sarah, especially since Sarah is not only Clarissa's maid, but also her childhood companion, as well as one of the gifts that Cornelius gives Clarissa when she gets married. This is "The Wedding Gift" by Marlene Suyapa Bodden.Told in alternating first-person narratives, that slightly backtrack in time between chapters, this novel unfolds while looking at two sides of the same story. On the one hand we have the perspective of the slave women Sarah. On the other we have the confidences of the plantation owner's wife Theodora. More importantly, we also see how these two women interact with each other as well as their relationships to their own families, and each others' families. In other words, these are the stories of one woman and her daughter, and one daughter and her mother. There are many stories about slavery before the American Civil War. This one is somewhat out of the ordinary in that we get parallel versions of the tale from both sides of the story - from the slave and from her owner. What I found most interesting was that in many ways, the owner Theodora was as much of a slave as Sarah. She was equally subject to the will of her husband as were her slaves. The difference was that Cornelius couldn't sell her if she disobeyed him. Also, in some ways Sarah was freer than Theodora because Sarah always could attempt to escape. If Sarah was successful, she could start a new life elsewhere, where she be welcomed and accepted. On the other hand, as long as Cornelius was alive, Theodora could go nowhere without scandal and shame following her.It also occurred to me that this is more a story about relationships between mothers and their daughters, as well as vice versa, than it is about slavery. To what lengths will a mother go to help her child, or a daughter go to care for her mother? All these aspects are very well covered in this novel through the two narratives. In addition, despite Sarah's unusual literacy, the two women's voices are distinctive enough to easily distinguish between them. With all of this, one might think that the story would be extremely gripping. In fact, throughout most of the book, we are swept along with these tales. However, as we near the end, parts of the narrative became technical and stilted. In some ways, from a certain point on, I felt like I was getting more lessons in legal, geographical and historical matters than I was following the stories of these two women. And while the conclusion of the novel came with an unexpected twist, by that time I was already becoming less invested in the outcomes of these women's stories. Moreover, this twist also felt a bit too out of the blue, and slightly inconsistent with the character. This isn't to say that I would have preferred an ending that came to a happier conclusion, but I would have liked it to be a bit more cohesive with the rest of the tale.Marlene Suyapa Bodden gives us a gently written story that unfolds elegantly along one of America's darkest areas of its history. She holds little back describing some of these horrors, but also reminds us of the kindnesses of those who rejected slavery. Together with this, she gives us food for thought about the essence of freedom, and a woman's role in society and family. While this was an enjoyable read for the most part, I was less than enamored with the content and tone of the end of the book. For this, I feel "The Wedding Gift" deserves three stars out of five.

Williams THE WEDDING GIFT is a novel set in 1852 Alabama, told in the first-person point of view through the eyes of Sarah Campbell, a slave, and Theodora Allen, her mistress. There are short periods where this tale is told from the point of view of the Allens’ daughter Clarissa. Sarah is actually the daughter of Theodora’s husband, the plantation master. This perspective adds something to this novel because readers see the racism and misogyny of the times. The slaves are chattel; they aren’t even legally supposed to gain any education at all. White women are treated almost as badly; they must tolerate infidelity and abuse from the very ones who are supposed to love them. With this in mind, this novel does have strong language, sexuality, alcohol and drug (laudanum) use and violence; I give it my usual phrase of “for sophisticated older teens and up” because of that. This novel does need some work with character development. Sarah’s character is well-handled; some readers may be bothered by the fact that she doesn’t understand that slavery is bad, but it is all she’s ever known. Because Theodora Allen has allowed Sarah to be in the room when Clarissa is taking her lessons, Sarah is more educated than most Blacks of her time. However, the other characters seem rather “wooden.” Readers of fiction set in this time period have seen these character types – the long-suffering but benevolent plantation mistress who prefers to refer to the people who work for her as “servants” rather than “slaves”; the overindulgent (in alcohol and women) master who seems to care little about those he’s supposed to love but so much about his family’s outward reputation and his business; the spoiled but troubled daughter – before.Though this work could use some improvement, particularly in the characterization, it is Boden’s first published work, and I grant her some credit there. I’ll look for more of this author’s works to see if experience grants improvement.

A story of slavery unlike any others I have read By PT Cruiser Although I've read a lot of articles and books about slavery over the years, I don't think anything I've read put me into the shoes of a woman who was a slave in such a disturbing way as Marlen Suyapa Bodden does in this book. It made me feel the resignation and hopelessness of most of the slaves, even though Sarah Campbell, one of the main characters, had hopes of someday escaping the plantation. The story was both emotionally difficult to read in parts and filled with determination and hope in others. Bodden did a very good job of making her characters seem real and showing the story from two different points of view, that of Sarah Campbell, a young woman who is a slave, and Theodora Allen, the wife of the plantation owner for whom Sarah works. The owner of the plantation, Cornelius Allen, is not only very heartless toward most of the slaves, he also treats his own wife, Theodora very poorly. Although she has a lot of money to do spend on the home and clothing for herself and her daughter, she doesn't have much more freedom than the slaves who work for them. The story also is a study in how corrupt those in power can become, both in their personal estates and in politics. It's easy to see in this story how ingrained slavery is during this period and the obstacles that had to be overcome to get out of it. Bodden illustrated in very stark terms what it was like to be "owned" by another person or persons. Sarah was given to the master's daughter, who she grew up with while her mother was a cook for the plantation, when she got married. And it was all so matter of fact that this was the way it would be.This book had me staying up late at night to read "just a few more pages", sometimes just to leave the story on a more hopeful page. I was surprised that this is Bodden's first novel. Her writing was that of a much more seasoned author. I hope she'll be writing more.

I have not only read these stories in the on-line version, but have purchased all of the book of the series to date. Whenever I feel the need to revisit old friends, I break out a Dar and Kerry book. "Winds of Change" takes our beloved characters in a totally new direction, which is very exciting. The only thing I have disliked about the print versions of these books is the very poor editing. There are spelling mistakes and odd symbols in the Kindle versions of many of the stories. Also, the later books have been very awkwardly split into several different books. This abrupt ending of the storyline can leave the reader feeling totally ripped off. That was especially true with this latest book "Winds of Change". The story was building and going along, and then it just ended. It is horrible editing. I would encourage the editors of future books by Ms. Good to allow the story to be published in the completed form. Some of us out here still have long enough attention spans to read the entire story from start to finish. You do a disservice to those readers that are just now discovering this wonderful author.

Disappointed By Amazon Customer I'm a huge fan of the Dar & Kerry series and have re-read all that books multiple times, but I didn't care too much for this one. While the other books have been a mix of romance, mystery, drama, and action, this one doesn't have much of any of that. It is primarily about their careers and is more focused on the technical aspects of their field than on the characters themselves. There are very few intimate scenes and conversations about their personal lives, other than the first part of the book when they're in Michigan. I found myself skimming some sections because they didn't hold my attention, which has never happened in the past books. I'm hoping part 2 will be mostly about their vacation and back to a focus on the characters instead of their IT business.

Spy of Richmond (Heroines Behind the Lines), by Jocelyn Green

Review

"Jocelyn Green’s Spy of Richmond is an enthralling tale of espionage with splashes of the intense hardships precipitated by war. Green continues to pen life into indomitable females who capture our hearts and imaginations. This novel, her fourth book in the Heroines Behind the Lines Series, revolves around Ms. Sophie Kent. The only thing that Sophie Kent desires more than and end to the fighting is a Union victory that would guarantee the end of slavery. Her unwavering commitment to this basic human right draws her into a secret network of information gathering Union loyalists. In order to obtain critical military intelligence, she sacrifices her reputation, risking her heart and her very life. Sophie wonders if God will forgive her deception if it benefits the greater good.I thoroughly enjoy Green’s novelistic prose. I especially liked how scriptures sprung to the minds of her core characters as the faced hardships - this seemed neither preachy nor forced. Excitement and anticipation gripped me as the cast traversed the Underground Railroad, endured the squalor of Confederate prisons, passed secret messages, and avoided pitfalls. All the while, Green’s character dialogue and inner musings flowed seamlessly. As in her previous novel, Yankee in Atlanta, Green does not skirt around difficult subjects. She gives voice to the issues of mental illness, racial prejudice, starvation, cruelty, and wavering faith. Yankee in Atlanta readers will encounter a familiar person who I loathed through both books (by design, I’m sure). Don’t fret, if you missed the previous book in the series you will find that this book can stand fine on it’s own.Spy of Richmond is a tour de force of Civil War Era historical fiction. A tremendous testimony to the resilience of the human spirit and the power of faith. I give it 5/5 stars."

"Thanks to Netgalley and Publishers for a copy of this book

I preordered this book as soon as I was able to. And the only reason I requested it on netgalley was because I am too impatient to wait until March to read it!

I actually read the second book in this series first, and LOVING it, I read the first and the third as soon as it was released. I love historical fiction set during the Civil War and I have loved this series especially because it focused on the females who lived and survived the Civil War. This series is just as good as Lynn Austin's Civil War series. And those are some of my all time favorite books.

As in the previous books, Green does a marvelous job weaving historical facts into the story. I felt like I was in the tunnels under Libby Prison digging a way out! I was so wrapped up I was horrified and saddened when Richmond burned and rode the rollercoaster of emotions as the end of a horrible war drew near with the Sophie and Bella. I loved reading more about Libby and Silas and Charlotte and Dr. Lansing. Even Noah and Caitlin had a part in this story And it all flowed together. This book and the Widow of Gettysburg are my two favorites of the series. Highly recommended for history lovers and anyone interested in learning more about the Civil War."

"This is the fourth book in Jocelyn Green’s Heroines Behind the Lines Civil War series.  Although I have only read the first so far, this story is complete and is enjoyable without previously reading the others.  It is historical fiction based on the spy rings that flourished in Richmond during the Civil War.Sophia Kent is a southern belle who is appalled by the injustice that she sees being endured by both the slaves in the South and the Union soldiers at Libby Prison.  Thwarted by her father in her attempt to release her personal slaves, she treats them with kindness and compassion.  Horrified by the lack of good food and the filth and cruelty suffered by the Union prisoners, she devises a way to get food to them.  Still, she wants to do more and it becomes apparent that the only way for this to end is the Civil War must conclude with a northern victory.  She is enlisted by Elizabeth Van Lew along with others in a dangerous ring of espionage that keeps her one step away from the hangman’s noose.I enjoyed the thought provoking, moral dilemmas that the author presented.  The characters must make difficult choices that put their lives and their loved ones in danger.  It tests their faith as they learn to lean on God.   She weaves a believable story with credible characters and historical facts to make a delightful book to curl up with.  Don’t pass up this or the rest of the series."

Spy of Richmond is meticulously researched historical fiction that shares the struggles, courage, fears, and faith of ordinary citizens who lived in extraordinary times. —Joseph Wheelan, author of Libby Prison Breakout: The Daring Escape from the Notorious Civil War Prison

The Spy of Richmond is richly peppered with descriptions and details of Confederate Richmond as it feels the strains of the last two years of the Civil War. Tensions in the city come to life through characters, both Northern and Southern, grasping for hope and survival. Sophie’s desire to do what is right and morally humane in the face of the terrors of war is applaudable. It’s inspiring to see how one woman’s sacrifice could impact the freedom of so many.

From the Back Cover

When living a lie is the right thing to do.

The Confederate capital in the height of the Civil War: no place for a Union loyalist. But just the place for a spy. Her father a slaveholder, her suitor a Confederate officer, and herself an abolitionist, Sophie Kent must walk a tightrope of deception in her efforts to end slavery. As suspicion in Richmond rises, Sophie’s espionage becomes more and more dangerous. If her courage will carry her through, what will be lost along the way—her true love, her father, her life?

Spy of Richmond is a work of fiction inspired by first-person accounts of Union loyalists and Confederates living in Richmond during the Civil War. This is the fourth and last book in the series Heroines Behind the Lines: Civil War, which offers an inside look at women’s contributions during times of war. Reminiscent of the classic work of the late Elmore Leonard in terms of both setting and style. Mr. Curtis's ability to craft a reader-worthy story full of color, suspense, and action is more than evident in LAWLESS DESERT. I only wish Mr. Curtis's publisher would do him the service of catching and correcting the occasional typographical and grammatical errors that have slipped through the editing process. His excellent work deserves to shine at its brightest before the reading public, unmarred by editorial slip-ups. My only criticism of the writing itself is that, because of the way chapters and scenes are set up, there were a few point-of-view changes that jolted me out of the story. Otherwise, LAWLESS DESERT is a gripping and thoroughly enjoyable tale of the Old West. And in my humble opinion, C.M. Curtis is emerging as one of the best of today's authors of Western fiction.

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. One of the best western novels ever! By Lew Craig With Lawless Desert, Curtis has established himself as one of the foremost writers of the western. This novel is full of action, but is still a fine character study. The good guys and the bad guys are true to life. Curtis does not shy away from the seamy side of life, but does so in a manner that is not offensive. This is a novel for the thoughtful person who likes to be entertained. Highly recommended!

Play a song for me....

Musicians are being murdered in New Orleans. But Arnie Watson apparently died by his own hand. When Tyler Anderson plays the saxophone he inherited from Arnie, a soldier and musician who died soon after his return, he believes he sees visions of his friend's life - and death. He becomes convinced Arnie was murdered and that the instrument had something to do with whatever happened, and with whatever's happening all over the city....

Tyler knows his theory sounds crazy to the police, so he approaches Danni Cafferty, hoping she and Michael Quinn will find out what the cops couldn't. Or wouldn't. After all, Cafferty and Quinn have become famous for solving unusual crimes.

They're partners in their personal lives, too. Quinn's a private investigator and Danni works with him. When they look into the case, they discover a secret lover of Arnie's and a history of jealousies and old hatreds that leads them back to the band Arnie once played with - and Tyler plays with now.

They discover that sometimes, for some people, the line between passion and obsession is hard to draw. Only in uncovering the truth can they hope to save others - and themselves - from the deadly hands of a killer.

The very best Heather Graham novel I recall reading By Neal Reynolds I 've read a number of Heather Graham's novels and frankly got to the point where they seemed so Samish and predictable that I quit reading her. So this book was a very pleasant surprise. I haven't read the other Cafferty and Quinn novels, but for romantic suspense, this was absolutely great. The plot has a hint of the paranormal in it. A deceased musician's saxophone appears to be possessed by its original owner's musical ability, and thus a maniacal killer is bound to find it, killing and torturing victims during his search. All this happens in the city of New Orleans and Ms. Graham gives a truly vivid picture of the city around Mardi Gras time. She especially focuses on the night club scenes due to the jazz musician characters.I did figure out the killer's identity when about two thirds through the book, but I don't fault the writer for that as reviewers sometimes do. In her case, I'm sure that she skillfully characterized the people in her book so that an alert reader could suspect one character. After all, the writer of a mystery is playing a game with the reader and realizes that some out there will win it. This certainly doesn't take away from the writer's skill. So I now see Heather Graham in a new light and greatly admire her present skill with romantic suspense. I enthusiastically recommend this book to all mystery fans who like a little (but not too much) romance along with the suspense. Thanks to this book, I'm quite likely to start reading her output again. .

The first victim is written off as a drug overdose, but is it. Tyler is playing the sax at a club one night when he has visions of his friends life and his murder. He has never believed his friend decided one night to shoot up with heroin. At first police don't believe him, until the other musicians turn up dead. Tyler asks Danni Cafferty and Michael Quinn, who have a reputation for solving cases, to investigate his friends death. The killer is looking for something and as he becomes more frustrated he becomes more reckless. Danni and Quinn are trying to keep people safe while trying to figure out who the killer is.

The Dead Play On by Heather Graham By Deb@Debbie's Book Bag The Queen of paranormal romantic suspense, returns with the third book in the Cafferty and Quinn series. Heather Graham's books always have that little touch of the paranormal in them and The Dead Play On is no different. This time it is in the saxophone of a dead Jazz player. Graham writes about the jazz scene in the city New Orleans like someone who has lived their all their life. She is able to give this book a dark, but sultry atmosphere that pervades it and gives the reader that chills down your spine kind of feeling. A great addition to this series!New Orleans is one my favorite cities to read about. It has this Old World kind of feeling mixed with the influences of Voodoo and Creole. Everything from the accents of the people to the traditions and rituals is dark and inky. Like you are seeing on part of what is really happening. It strikes me as a place of secrets and Heather Graham is sooooo good at bringing it to life. Whether it's the ghostly aspect of things or the mysterious aspect. Whether it's the music or the mayhem, Graham knows how to write this town.In The Dead Play On, Graham delves deep into the musical history of the town. Drawing on the legends and stories passed down from musicians and players to give the reader a mystery that will captivate them. I loved the way Graham takes the reader into the Jazz atmosphere and makes them want to feel the music as much as listen to it. Arnie was a Jazz saxophone player and when he died, his spirit seems to reside in his horn. What an interesting idea to base a mystery on. I liked the fact that it had to do with musicians and the music of New Orleans. Very well done! When Tyler, Arnie's best friend plays the sax given to him by Arnie's mother, something strange happens. Everyone thinks that Arnie died of a drug overdose but Tyler sees something completely different when he plays Arnie's horn. He sees the way he really died and he knows that this horn has something to do with the deaths of the other musicians in New Orleans. I loved the whole back story for this one. It was ingenious really. The killer looking for the horn almost driven by it to kill. I thought it was very well written, but most Heather Graham books are.Tyler appeals to Cafferty and Quinn to help him prove to the authorities that Arnie's death was a murder. Cafferty and Quinn have some expertise at crimes that are little out of the ordinary. I love the way these two characters work together. They play off each other and they aren't afraid to say that a crime has a supernatural element to it. They believe Tyler and it's up to them to prove it. I like the fact that there are two investigators with this series. Reminds me a bit of Scully and Moulder. LOL! Love it!Bottom Line:Another amazing book from Heather Graham. She is one of my favorites. The paranormal elements don't beat the reader over the head, they are subtle and intriguing. I don't know that I believe in ghosts or spirits or the essence of a person being left in their musical instrument, but I do believe in Heather Graham's ability to make me wonder if maybe that could be possible. A great book, you won't want to miss!

In 2013, Ann Cameron cured Stage 4 colon cancer without chemotherapy or radiation, by drinking carrot juice. Since then, others with a variety of cancers have reported similar successes. Cameron wanted to find out why such an apparently simple cancer cure--just carrots--works. Based on her extensive reading in scientific journals focused on nutrition and cancer, her ground-breaking book describes the details of the carrot treatment and the scientific evidence for its power. In this book, she shares little-known research that is revolutionizing scientific thinking about cancer and how to treat it. The research comes from the exciting new field of epigenetics--the study of how chemical switching mechanisms in our bodies change the expression of our genes. Our environment, the foods we eat, and the way we live can silence pro-cancer genes or turn them on, set anti-cancer genes on alert or turn them off. Genes aren't our destiny. Neither is cancer. Cancer develops when the body loses its ability to recognize and eliminate rogue cells--cells that take over the body if they don't quit dividing. In some cases--probably many--carrots can restore the body's natural power to regulate growth and kill defective cells. The scientific information in this book could be a life-saver and a beacon of hope for you or someone you know. Equally helpful, it offers the practical knowledge Cameron gained from her journey through cancer and back to health--how to use the internet to research proposed treatments and the quality of hospitals and doctors; how to reduce the cost of cancer care; and how to arrive at individual treatment decisions that are best for you.

I thank God for putting Ann in my path and encouraging me to continue with my juicing. I agree with everything written in this book. I wasn't given a good prognosis by doctors and was given 5 weeks of radiation from stage 3b- 4 cancer and refused chemo & no surgery, during this time I juiced large amounts of carrots, ginger, and celery (4 cups a day- 32 oz) .. along with a vegetarian diet and turmeric supplement and was completely clear of cancer. I encourage everyone to juice carrots & do meditation/ rest and have faith that there is a way and there is a higher power that wants you well. This book is evidence of how commitment and determination can naturally heal your body. Best wishes!

33 of 35 people found the following review helpful. Excellent, thought provoking look at modern cancer treatments By Jonathan Ater This is a beautifully written, well documented, and balanced look at modern cancer treatments. It is far more than the author's remarkable personal story. She explains how and why the natural compounds in carrots (and some other natural foods) combat the growth of cancer cells and even encourage those cells to self-destruct. She also explains how chemotherapy and radiation work, in simple language that any reader can understand. Ann Cameron may well be cured of her cancer. In this book, she gives every reader both information and tools to help think through the implications of a cancer diagnosis.

32 of 34 people found the following review helpful. Living Proof! By Maria Oliver So glad Ann wrote this book to help spread the word. Was healed of Lymph node cancer in the throat after juicing 5lbs. of carrots a day for about a month. Was going to have to have surgery, radiation, and possibly chemo when first diagnosed. I had to go through several months of back and forth testing with the doctors who, not all but most, refused to accept that they were gone without traditional treatment. Have doctors in the family and not at all against western medicine but think they need to be more open to the healing power of nutrition. When dealing with cancer there are many factors to consider and I wouldn't tell somebody not to take your doctor's advice on cancer treatment but also don't be afraid to try a glass of freshly juiced carrots to boost your chances of success. The power of nutrition is not being promoted enough today in the medical community in my opinion. Thank you Ann!
