England at the time of Edward III — a time when marriageable daughters were welcome currency in the plans of ambitious men. In the Sussex village of Mayfield, the young and beautiful Oriel de Sharndene has been forced into marriage with the Archbishop of Canterbury’s brother though she loves a handsome Gascon squire. Yet all is not as it seems, for these are three people who have not only met in another life but are fated to meet again and again. From medieval England to the witch hunts of the seventeenth century and the smuggling and highwaymen of the eighteenth, TO SLEEP NO MORE is an unforgettable tale of three characters whose souls can not rest until their final destiny has been resolved. ‘Deryn Lake researches her books with care and weaves facts into a story that is satisfyingly romantic and impressively researched’ - Publishing News ‘A chilling, compulsive read, vividly brought to life and guaranteed to keep you turning the pages.’ – Prima ‘Accurate historical detail is linked to fiction in an entertaining novel.’ - Yorkshire Evening Post ‘In this fine historical romance, love defies time, with souls in torment, reincarnations and all that. A good mixture of fact and fiction, fascination and fate.’ - Woman’s World Deryn Lake started to write stories at the age of five then graduated to novels but destroyed all her early work because, she says, it was hopeless. A chance meeting with one of the Getty family took her to Sutton Place and her first serious novel was born. Deryn was married to a journalist and writer, the late L. F. Lampitt, has two grown-up children and lives in Mayfield, Sussex, with two large cats. She is also the author of ‘Sutton Place’, ‘The King’s Women’ and ‘Pour The Dark Wine’. Endeavour Press is the UK's leading independent digital publisher.

These souls have evidently lived many lives together. This novel, set in England, tells the story of three lifetimes of these bound souls.Although it is very well-written, each section of the book involves many diverse characters which I kept getting confused. On several occasions I had to go back and re-read sections in order to sort out the characters in my mind, and almost stopped reading the book about half-way through because of that. On a positive note, which appealed to me as a former history teacher, there are many interesting details regarding the historical times and social mores of the day. This book also re-awakened my interest in the subject of reincarnation and the journey of the soul. I have ordered two more non-fiction books on the subject of past-lives.

By Gizzimomo Wilson Set within three separate and yet linked timelines, each with different characters that are conjoined by their fates through reincarnation To Sleep No More is an intriguing and different period tale, unlike anything I have read previously. The three stories initially seem like they have nothing in common with one another but as the story progresses and as you delve into each of the different timelines the past lives link come more and more to the forefront until you reach a point where you can completely understand how the stories are linked, how the characters are linked and how much fate and destiny have had a pull and influence on their very different lives. It's a fascinating premise when you think about it, are we destined to live the same romance over and over again with the same soul even if you have no clue that you may have been through it over and over again. It's a deliciously provocative thought and who wouldn't like to think that our lives and loves could possibly have such an order to them? The writing of this story is cleverly put together with the threads gradually knitting themselves together over the course of the entire book. Each of the three threads contain a separate story of love, romance and friendship and each is worth reading in their own rights alone but it's not until the very end that you can truly understand why the book has been structured in the way it has, when the underlying truth behind the past lives is fully revealed. The characterisations are beautifully crafted and each of the characters breath life into the story and into each other with their richness of emotion and personality. The pacing is perfect and suits the book completely, growing in pace as we learn more and more about the truth. As the three stories are set in different time periods, each time coming further into the future you get a good sense of the world around them and of the various times that they live in meaning that you do get a good sense for the world-building and the mythology behind the families in question, the land they live on and the social structures of the varying times.I don't really want to go into the stories too much as I wouldn't like to give any spoilers away at all which would be far to easy to do but trust me when I say this is a great period novel with a twist. It may sound a little insane on paper but the book itself is a real joy to read and I would recommend to anyone who has a love of books featuring those bygone times. It's a great read!

It was overwritten, particularly in the earlier parts of the book, sections of which might almost have been in contention for the Bulwer Lytton. The concept was initially intriguing to me, which is why I downloaded the book in the first place. But it would have been far more interesting if the author had created characters from whole cloth, instead of trying to cram her concept into actual historical figures. That felt contrived to me, and in the end, dishonest. And then when I came to the end, there did not seem to be any point to it all. Is that the author's perspective on life? I couldn't tell. Three separate stories with intertwining characters in three separate eras and...well, no clear ending that I could see. Oh, and by the way, if your spinning wheel clacks, you should oil it. (Authors pretending to be accurate should really check YouTube for demos!!)

And when he realizes the key to their survival may lie in the hands of an old enemy, he must finally face the truth about his own guilt in an incident he has found too terrible to consider....

Why Kings Confess: A Sebastian St. Cyr Mystery, by C.S. Harris

From Booklist *Starred Review* The grisly murder of French physician Damion Pelletan—found with his heart removed in a disreputable London neighborhood in 1813—is a puzzle that Sebastian St. Cyr finds increasingly intriguing. Palletan, recently arrived in London as part of a secret mission seeking peace between England and France, is the son of the doctor who briefly attended the Lost Dauphin, the son of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette, during the boy’s imprisonment after the revolution, and later autopsied the boy, removing and keeping his heart. Pelletan’s sister, the physician Alexi Sauvage, badly injured while accompanying her brother when he was killed, is being stalked by the vengeful relative of a former patient. Solving the murder becomes secondary to St. Cyr’s concern for his beloved wife, Hero, as her delivery date approaches with the probability of a breech birth, which both mother and child rarely survived in the early nineteenth century. And although Sauvage is an accomplished accoucheur, St. Cyr’s history with her prevents his trusting her with treating Hero. This ninth St. Cyr outing offers a winning combination of the political and the personal with a tangled plot deftly handled in Harris’ trademark brisk prose. A compellingly readable addition to a solidly researched historical mystery series. --Michele Leber

Review “Best historical thriller writer in the business!”—New York Times bestselling author Lisa GardnerPraise for Why Kings Confess“Harris's best Regency whodunit yet...[She] melds mystery and history as seamlessly as she integrates developments in her lead’s personal life into the plot.”—Publishers Weekly (Starred Review) “Harris’s novel shows an intimate knowledge of both the political and social history of Regency England.…The history, characters, mystery, and atmosphere all draw the reader in and don’t let go.”—RT Book Reviews (Top Pick)

Fast paced mystery By Gallia The new Sebastian Devlin is a fast paced whodunnit which starts off with his friend Paul Gibson stumbling upon two bodies in one of the nastier back alleys of east London. The man is dead with a horrendous wound in his chest, his heart missing; the woman with him is injured but survives after Paul takes her back to his surgery for care. Sebastian gets involved at first out of curiosity and finds himself deep into French politics, both with a commission sent to Britain to explore the possibiility of negotiating a peace treaty and with the Bourbon royal family in exile who are all adamantly opposed to any negotiation with Napoleon. After an unsuccessful attempt on his life, Sebastian finds the case more personal, and with more victims. The major question is who is behind the murders and why was the heart of the first victim, a member of the French delegation, of such importance. The action is swift and the characters are fascinating, including the Duchess of Angouleme (the daughter of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette), a member of the French exile court who is also a "molly", and the doctoresse who Paul rescued. A couple of characters seem to be superfluous to the plot at first but they are successfully tied in with the others at the end. As always, Hero Devlin is an intriguing character and it was a pleasure to see her evolving relationship with Sebastian. Paul Gibson is also an appealing character and may now have a real romance in his life in future novels. I also enjoy Sebastian's aunt, a true "grande dame". I read this in one day because it was so interesting and the fast pace made it difficult to put down. While it is not absolutely necessary, I recommend reading the novels in sequence in order to understand the relationships among the characters. Many readers will undoubtedly already be familiar with the tragic story of the young Dauphin, the son of Marie Antoinette, and histreatment as a prisoner. However, I did not know much at all about the sister, Marie Therese, and the fact that she spent her years in exile, after her release from prison, in Britain working toward the restoration of the Bourbons. This was a central aspect of the mystery.

12 of 12 people found the following review helpful. loved it! By SMB I have enjoyed all of the St. Cyr books. I am not a mystery reader as such so I can not critic this as a mystery. I can say however that unlike many books I did not have a sense of who the bad guy was half way thru the book which is often the case. I enjoy this book especially because of the strong characters and the historical details thru the book. I did have some trouble with the time line....so much happened in such a short period of time and Gibson's romance developed rather quickly but then this is fiction. I read the book in one weekend and am now hoping for the next book already.

13 of 14 people found the following review helpful. Another excellent entry in the series By JKom SPOILER ALERT: I couldn't figure out why Sebastian didn't ask Lord Jarvis for help with Hero's potential breech-birth, even allowing for the whole 'stiff-necked pride' thing. Still, I appreciated Hero getting a little bit of print-time to show she's still the feisty, tough noblewoman we all love and enjoy. A decent mystery, but the St. Cyr books feel like they're getting shorter. Unlike Kate Ross' superior Julian Kestrel series, the mysteries are getting simpler yet the St. Cyr main characters aren't progressing much either.I enjoy the series; it's the best since Ms. Ross died and left her characters forever frozen in time. But I don't love it as well as the Kestrel novels, I only like the St. Cyr books.

Review Recommended by Kirkus Reviews Finalist Foreword Reviews IndieFab Book of the Year"the author has done such a fabulous job of crafting this storyline that the reader cannot help but to stay engaged from cover to cover... ...The author has really crafted a multi-dimensional character in Travis.  And it is through Travis that the author's voice really shines through.... ...I was hooked from beginning to end and found this to be surprisingly a bit of a nail biter.  Really strong entr-y with an over-all appeal that will leave audiences wanting more...  ...Great mix of narrative and prose keep the pacing at a page turning pace that will not disappoint the reader. Well done."-judge, Writer's Digest Self-Published eBooks Award "Sachs keeps the story moving full-steam-ahead, balancing his fleshed-out portraits of memorable characters with visceral action scenes... ...An engaging and ultimately devastating disaster novel."-Kirkus Reviews"The Flood is an epic thriller and a remarkable work of art--you'll read it fast, but think (and dream) about it for a long time."  -Matthew Mather, bestselling author of CyberStorm

From the Author This story came to me in a dream, in one piece. Sleeping on the metal floor of the stern open deck of a ferry in the Greek Isles on my honeymoon, when I woke up I had the whole thing. It was a much darker story than I normally would have created myself, but it being gifted to me, I had to make the most of it.I approached it with the idea of my adventure-writer heroes, Jack London and Joseph Conrad, in mind, and perhaps in the first draft there was some of that. Then, as things do, it took on a life of its own and went somewhere different.

An Exceptional Tale of Darkness and Hope By ConsumerAdvocate (dakotad555) at (gmail) dot (com) With echoes of Cormac McCarthy’s THE ROAD and Golding’s LORD OF THE FLIES mixed with just a hint of a Michael Bay blockbuster thrown in to keep the story moving, THE FLOOD by Davis Sachs is a gripping disaster story that leaves a profound impact on the reader.THE FLOOD marries an intelligent literary sensibility with taut storytelling. It introduces a variety of unique characters, all well-drawn and interesting, and places them on a derelict cruise ship, cut off from whatever is left of society after a tsunami of biblical proportions wipes out the entire east coast of the United States. Parallels to the flood mythology shared by all ancient cultures are not lost on Sachs who wisely places a professor aboard the Festival of the Winds cruise ship, giving him an able lens through which to place his narrative in a wider philosophical and historical context. A welcome and necessary grounding in what might otherwise be nothing more than a story about carnage.Rather, this is a book about ideas dressed up as a thriller. Yes, the story grimly embraces the darkest parts of the human experience. Murder, mayhem, savagery and barbarism—all are present here, along with some visceral thrills and brilliant set pieces. However, these are all tableaus; Sachs deploys them with great skill, but the heart of this story is an exploration of the darkest parts of the human experience in a way that manages to transcend almost everything else in the genre, excepting the aforementioned McCarthy. Sachs paints with stark lines and a monochrome pallet of human suffering, but his strokes are deft and true. There’s a heart in this disaster story. Love as well. Not the sloppy Hollywood variety, but the real, meaningful, moving sort.I read once that authors don’t often write of the intensity of parental love because it scares them. Also because it scares their readers. THE ROAD and THE FLOOD are two novels that tread these dangerous waters and manage to keep their heads afloat. Parts of THE FLOOD are painful to read; doubly so if one happens to be a parent of a young child. However, the narrative thread that prevents THE FLOOD from becoming merely another grim tale of death and dying is that of the extreme, imperfect, and achingly beautiful love of a single man for a single boy. It’s gripping stuff, if you can handle it. THE FLOOD isn’t a book to be taken lightly. It is, however, eminently readable. The prose sings. The dialog has the natural move and flow of real conversion.Don’t come to THE FLOOD to have your regard for the human race restored. Do come with the expectation that you will be asked to look at yourself and society at large with a critical eye. To ask yourself just how far are you really from straying off the civilized path. How close are you to the great precipice, internal or external? In a society overwhelmed with zombie story clones that address these same questions with all the subtlety of a chainsaw, Sachs has managed to provide a deft, meaningful exploration worthy of a careful reading.A hearty 5 out of 5 stars.Disclaimer: I received a copy of THE FLOOD in exchange for this review. I received no other form of compensation.

In one way, I couldn't put it down, there were times I was mad things didn't go the way I thought they would but I'm not the author and I was hooked. The ending was-unexpected. I don't like dad endings but this wouldn't really qualify as a sad ending, not in some ways. Would I recommend this book? Hmmm. Yes I will. Even though this book is written a little different the story did engage me, I felt involved often and couldn't quit until I read the ending. There was no unneeded offensive language, no descriptive sex and even the violence was not colorful-it was a side product off the story but didn't describe the wounds etc. Yes, I recommend this book. I am just glad the author did not think to have refugees with pets. I am quite sure he would have written all kinds of ugly about that too.It was partly my fault for not reading the reviews. But I really did not like this book. I did not actually see a whole lot of redemption in this. I agree with other reviewers that it certainly makes one stop and think, what will the people around me do if there is a disaster? I did not see any beauty in the father/son relationship. I did not see redemption in the horror. And for the reviewer who kept asking about a sequel... you did not get the point of this book. There is no sequel. That was it. And it was horribly depressing. And worst of all, there were several fatal technical flaws in it that just drove me nuts. If you have not read it and don't want spoilers, stop reading now.First, if they ran at 25 knots for 4 hours, they would only be 120 miles out from NYC. And that is assuming a full 25 knots the whole time, if that were even possible. The impression I got was they headed SE to get off the shelf, that makes sense. BUT. Once the ship was disabled, they would still be pretty close to South Carolina or so, and they would be in the Gulf Stream, so the drift would be back north and somewhat inland. Why did no one send one of the POWER lifeboats to the continent? I am sure they could have found containers for extra fuel, and why the hell did no one trigger the EPIRBS that EVERY lifeboat is equipped with? And suppose there were no containers for extra fuel, and the baddies took all the EPIRBS, why did no one think to convince Lee that he could keep the gun, but someone else needed to keep the bullets? That way no one person had all the power. There were so many places in this story that made no sense. It was clear that the author went to extremes with the "worst case scenario", just because.Again, I agree with the taking stock of where we are going with our society. Every negative person out there influences the people around them in a negative way. And we are becoming more separated and insular. And we are becoming less empathetic. More narcissistic. But this book did not "make me think". I see the flaws already. I do what I can to reintroduce beauty and kindness. My hope is instead of sending people into despair, this book would motivate them into better acts. Though I doubt it would. So this book is not a warning of the problem in my view, it is a PART of the problem.

Little Women (Xist Classics), by Louisa May Alcott

From School Library Journal Grade 4-7. An entry in a series whose aim is to give readers a clearer picture of the time and place in which classic stories take place. This version of Little Women is augmented with text and illustrations that explain some of the period social customs, clothes, entertainments, etc. Also included are some bits of information about Louisa May Alcott's life. This approach seems best suited to children already familiar with the story; they may find the historical perspective interesting. First-time readers will most likely be distracted by the margin notes that pull attention from the narrative. While they can be helpful, as when they illustrate an unfamiliar piece of clothing, they are often distracting and can even be confusing in their placement. For instance, a note mentioning the Laurences is placed two pages before those characters are introduced. This format may also discourage readers from independent research?a process that can be rewarding in its own right. One other caveat?as explained in an endnote, Little Women was originally written in two parts, and this volume only contains part one, which ends with Mr. March's return. Readers familiar with the more common two-part version may find this title incomplete; children new to this classic will be better off with any one of the unembellished versions available.?Arwen Marshall, New York Public LibraryCopyright 1997 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal How would one describe this latest recording of the classic story from Alcott (Little Men, Audio Reviews, LJ 11/15/96)? The answer must be, clear, competent, and unexciting. Laura Grafton is a precise reader, but her voice lacks expressiveness, and she makes little attempt to vocally differentiate (and/or animate) the characters. The result is an inoffensive and slightly dull rendering. There's nothing wrong; the tapes just won't grab the attention of the casual listener. The producer has made a praiseworthy attempt to reduce costs by having each cassette side carry double text. At $22.95, this tape set is an excellent value. Unfortunately, this double-track format requires a stereo cassette player with a fully functioning balance control. Most portable cassette players and some car stereo systems do not have this feature. Since, at least anecdotally, a large percentage of recreational audiocassette library borrowers are commuters or exercisers, one should consider whether this format would be used by patrons. Libraries purchasing this format might also consider purchasing (and lending) the associated headphone adaptor plugs. Recommended for libraries with limited audiobook budgets and/or appropriate user populations.AI. Pour-El, Iowa State Univ., AmesCopyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc.

"Little Women," - The Original By Renee Shields Like the previous reviewer, I was surprised to find that he book I had been occasionally rereading for over 50 years was NOT the original novel. My own copy, much loved and well thumbed, has been with me since I was a ten year old. I bought the Kindle version just to have it in my portable library, since I thought I knew it almost by heart. To my surprise, when I started looking it over, I found that the book was not the same at all. My original copy must have been "modernized" at some point. All of the familiar passages were there, but there was a great deal that I didn't remember reading before. Some of that was a specifically Victorian kind of moralizing, but there was also some expansion of the story.. I'm not sure that I would have appreciated it all when I was younger, but I found it a delight to read now, as an example of a book of its times. Now I'm going to download the rest of the Alcott catalogue and see how it compares to the books I thought were the originals when I read them many years ago. This was still an exemplary book. It will always be one of the classics.

By bensmomma I was so, so looking forward to reading "Little Women" to my daughter, so she could be caught up in it as I was at an early age. I particularly chose the "Whole Story" edition because of its broad margins, easy-to-scan pages, and charming illustrations and margin notes that add historical texture to the story.Imagine my shock to discover that at the end of THIS edition, Jo has not written a book, Amy has not gone off to Europe, Professor Baer has not made an appearance of any kind and....you'll never believe this....Beth is still carrying on a conversation (I'm trying not to spoil the plot of the real thing here). That's because, apparently, "Little Women" was initially published in two parts ("Little Women" and "Good Wives"), which are generally published as the same book. Whole Story has chosen to stop at the half-way point, so much of the story you remember, loved, cried, and laughed over is just not here.Imagine getting only the first half of Tom Sawyer...leave him stranded on the island forever!I feel completely conned. It's a five-star story - make that maybe even a seven-star story - but it's a one-star edition.

It is a great American classic written by Louisa May Alcott. It is about the four March sisters: Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy. They live in New England during the Civil War. They are poor, but they try to make the best of it as they grow and learn. We follow them through good times and bad as they, with help from Marmee and Laurie (their next-door neighbor), bear their own unique burdens. Meg's is poverty, Jo's is her temper, Beth's burden is not being able to play on a piano, and Amy's is her unaristocratic nose. (as funny as that sounds) You'll fall in love with Jo's oddities just as much as with Beth's gentil manners. It is a great book that everyone should read!

Forget Paris By Liz Forget Paris: Sweet Christian romance in Paris and London ( Love in Store-book 4)by; Autumn MacarthurForget Paris is book four in this series and I really enjoyed it. This is a very sweet, clean, Christian romance that starts in Paris on Valentine day. I love the two main characters, Zoe and Gabe. This story is about loss, hurting, and afraid to love again. I really love reading stories by Macarthur . I had no problem following the story or the characters. Both Zoe and Gabe are fun characters, they will keep you laughing and at other times I was saying No No don’t do that. When i started reading Forget paris I did not want to put it down till the end. I am not going to say anything else, you will just have to read Forget Paris for yourself to find out more about Zoe and Gabe. You will love it as I did.I was given a copy of this book by the author for my honest review , Which I have given.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Forget Paris By Alexa Verde I love reading books by Autumn Macarthur, and Forget Paris is a wonderful installment #4 in her Love In Store Series. Each book in the series is a Christian romance and a sweet, clean, feel-good read. God's Love is at the center of each novel. Even though Forget Paris, as other books in the series, can be read as a stand alone, it's fun to come back to familiar characters. I haven't read a novel set in Paris before, so the setting in the most romantic city in the world was a welcome background to a sweet romance. As always, I look forward to reading Autumn Macarthur's next book.

Lopez if you like great love stories where the hero and heroine discover not only their true love for each other but also their true love for God, don't waste a minute before adding this wonderful book to your library. Visiting or of the world's most romantic cities i— Paris — and continuing in another —London — Zoe has to stop thinking about how she supposedly doesn't measure up, doesn't deserve a lasting love while Gabe has to realize that true love is worth fighting for. Watching these two delightful people reach out to each other as they discover the direction God has always had planned for them is an absolute delight. I'm very happy to have been given a free copy of this book for an honest review. As you can tell, I honestly love it.

Career of Evil (Cormoran Strike Novels), by Robert Galbraith

Review "Career of Evil is the third--and best--novel in the engaging Cormoran Strike private detective series. . . . [Galbraith has] invented a serial killer for the ages, one who chills us from the book's grim but riveting opening. . . . This perfectly paced mystery is packed with surprises, all of which play out with flawless crime-fiction logic."―Jocelyn McClurg, USA Today (4/4 stars)"Gripping . . . A step forward for the series . . . An absorbing book, pulpy, fast and satisfying."―Charles Finch, New York Times Book Review"Pure pleasure. . . . That's what makes these novels so good: They are clever, tightly plotted mysteries with all of the most pleasurable elements of the genre (good guy, bad guy, clues, twists, murder!), but with stunning emotional and moral shading."―Annalisa Quinn, NPR"Hugely entertaining . . . This gifted storyteller has taken full command of the new turf. . . . Career of Evil succeeds powerfully on its own terms."―Lloyd Sachs, Chicago Tribune"Another triumph . . . Its darkness is mitigated by its sparkling protagonists."―Kim Hubbard, People"Strike and Robin are just as magnetic as ever."―Michiko Kakutani, New York Times"Sparklingly witty [and] unexpectedly moving"―Moira Macdonald, Seattle Times"Bloody good . . . The author's trademark plotting has lost none of its propulsive readability."―Daneet Steffens, Boston Globe"Satisfying . . . Strike and Robin are as powerful a fictional pairing as any in recent memory. . . . Galbraith demonstrates a breezy command of the intricacies of both the central mystery and of the form itself."―Robert Wiersema, Toronto Star"A refreshing change to the genre . . . Every bit as impressive as [The Cuckoo's Calling] . . . Let's hope the sardonic Cormoran Strike is here to stay."―Barry Forshaw, Independent [UK]"An entertaining novel . . . The denouement is violent, unexpected and satisfying."―Marcel Berlins, The Times [UK]"A deliriously clever plot"―Christobel Kent, Guardian [UK]"As readable and exciting as ever . . . Fans of the intrepid duo are in for some shocks."―Jake Kerridge, Telegraph [UK]

Without spoiling anything, this time out our hero is trying to nab a serial killer with a taste for dismemberment. It might be one of three suspects Strike has a history with, or perhaps another unknown killer. The plot has been detailed by others at length, so I'll just offer some thoughts about the pluses and minuses:The Good: - Robin, one of the most interesting and likable characters JKR has ever created, co-stars in the novel and her identity is superbly defined - Strike's backstory is addressed in more detail, and it's very compelling - The settings are vividly depicted, with excellent descriptions of sites all over seedy and posh London and Northern England - Heavy topics like rape, child abuse, and mental illness are thoughtfully considered and woven into the narrative without being overly preachy - The relationship between Robin and Strike continues to develop in a complex, unpredictable way - The dialog is consistently excellent and realistic - Much less emphasis on Strike's disability, which plagued the last novel - The reveal, unlike the first two novels, is not an endless explanatory monologue -- it's thankfully short and sweet**These positives far outweigh the following negatives, definitely making Career of Evil a worthwhile read. Nevertheless...The Bad: - Many of the characters are one-dimensional. While Strike and Robin are increasingly depicted as complicated, multifaceted protagonists, most others are portrayed without any significant depth. The bad guys are REALLY bad; the victims are hopelessly innocent, others just occupy space. Some, like Matthew and Whittaker, are cartoonishly described and Detective Carver is, to put it bluntly, Vernon Dursely - Someone needs to pluck up the courage and let the author know she needs an editor. The book is downright plodding at times. - The basic premise of the plot is forced and improbable (BIID? Really?) - Each chapter leads with lyrics from a Blue Oyster Cult song. These lines figure into the story (sort of), but this silly gimmick gets old fast - The violence (and there is quite a lot) is gratuitously over the top, as if JKR is determined to identify herself as an adult writer - The comic element featured in the first two novels is largely absent in the thirdThe Ugly: - The book features intermittent passages shown from the killer's perspective which are eye-rollingly bad. I hate to say that but it's true. Think of every serial killer you've ever seen in a movie or read about in a book, and that's the stereotype you get -- right down to the killer's referring to a woman as "It" a la Buffalo Bill in Silence of the Lambs. These sections are so subpar, so cliched, and so unimaginative that it's hard to believe that JKR wrote them. I suppose they are included to give the narrative an additional angle but, rather than compliment the story's trajectory, they dumb it down.Despite its drawbacks, Career of Evil is a very good read. Slow at times, but enjoyable. As said above, the positives outweigh the negatives. In particular, the maturing of Robin's and Strike's characters is a leap forward. I wouldn't be surprised if this book is regarded as the most popular one in the series so far, although the hyper-violent yet cliched serial killer may be off-putting to some.

Rowling) has done it again with this third book in her excellent Cormoran Strike series. This time, the story ensues when Cormoran's assistant and detective-in-training, Robin Ellacott receives the severed leg of an unknown woman in a package delivered to the office. Cormoran and Robin begin their hunt for the killer, but it's hard to know at times who is the hunter and who the hunted. A ruthless killer is out there, and Cormoran's life is not the only one on the line. This story is wonderful blend of suspense, humor, an intrigue as Cormoran and Robin continue their subtle dance as detective and assistant; and perhaps something more. At the same time, tension between Cormoran and the police investigating the crime continues as, unfortunately, his past successes in solving crimes have highlighted their failures. The best thing about every one of these books is that Rowling brings her great gift of storytelling to a new realm of fiction. The characters are vivid, the plots intricate and believable. The worlds Rowling builds are so well woven, you feel yourself pulled into the story. You become one of the characters. To me, it seems the "Harry Potter" series was just the opening act for one of the most gifted writers of my generation..

Rowling (not anymore) hidden under pseudonym Robert Galbraith is the third novel in Cormoran Strike series that continues to bring the exciting adventures of great pair – the unusual London private detective Cormoran Strike with turbulent history and his sidekick, a woman who is much more than Cormoran’s secretary, Robin Ellacott. The first thing that needs to be said for regulars - `Career of Evil' is so far the best installment in series. Either seen from the perspective of good guys that are becoming even more profiled characters, or villains that are not flat characters, but more than ever complex and terrifying persons that will make you think about the book long after the last page is closed. The story starts as usual –the Big Bang from the page 1 when package is delivered to Cormoran’s office containing severed leg of unknown woman. Soon we are going to find out few more secrets from Cormoran’s dark past, mainly of his mother Leda Strike who is obviously connected with this morbid incident. Or at least it seems because of common motive - lyrics of song called "Mistress of the Salmon Salt" by band Blue Oyster Cult, a title that Strike's mother had tattooed on very intimate place is found as note inside the package.Cormoran could think of four men that are part of his troubled past, each of them horrible in their own way. But though it may sound straightforward to eliminate one by one until coming to the true suspect, this severed leg will be trigger for many things from distant past to present that are coming to surface, even the question are Robin and Cormoran more than just colleagues?J. K. really outdid herself with this one, delivering so far the best sequel in the series that as rollercoaster would take reader up and down, not letting you out of the train to the last page. Though I will not disclose the details of story, obviously on purpose author left few blanks in the first two books in order to fill them in spectacular manner with her 3rd chapter.Especially fresh was her decision to write part of books from the psychopath perspective because the way J. K. portrayed her bad guy is really chilling to the bone.I remember writing that `The Silkworm' as second installment had tough job to surpass the original - and she managed to do more than that. But with `Career of Evil' she goes more than just few more steps ahead – J. K. is making us fearful, but in same time she reminds us to look closely around ourselves and not forget to return kindness, friendship and love.Enjoy…

The Jewish Merzes are longstanding members of Berlin’s haute bourgeoisie who count a friend of Goethe among their distinguished ancestors. Not that this proud legacy means much of anything to them anymore. Secure in their huge town house, they devote themselves to little more than enjoying their comforts and ensuring their wealth. The Feldens are landed aristocracy, well off but not rich, from Germany’s Catholic south. After Julius von Felden marries Melanie Merz the fortunes of the two families will be strangely, indeed fatally, entwined.  Set during the run-up to World War I, a time of weirdly mingled complacency and angst, A Legacy is captivating, magnificently funny, and profound, an unforgettable image of a doomed way of life.

A Legacy (New York Review Books Classics), by Sybille Bedford

Review “One of the very best novels I have ever read.” —Nancy Mitford  “Dry wit, careful attendance to detail, dialogue in which there is ‘more to be said than can come through’—these are the hallmarks of Bedford’s fiction. She shows the ways in which the private lives of individuals reflect the larger political life of their culture, and vice versa; she portrays the evolution of Nazism and Fascism where it really took place—in living rooms and kitchens and on benches.” —David Leavitt   “There’s such a wonderful tension between the hedonist and the historian in this author.” —Maria Bustillos, The Awl   “A book of entirely delicious quality. Two families, vastly dissimilar, the one Jewish inartistic millionaires, the other slightly decadent Catholic aristocrats, become joined in marriage. Everything is new, cool, witty, elegant, and some scenes are uproariously funny.” —Evelyn Waugh   “A Legacy lives by its delightful tart and feline wit, and by its author’s remarkable gift for capturing the breath of Europe past on the glass of fiction present.” —Time   “At once historical novel and study of character, a collection of brilliantly objective portraits.” —Aldous Huxley  “An astonishing and fascinating first novel.” —Janet Flanner   “Bedford’s language is vibrant with an awareness of people and their manners and the countries that shape them; she moves in and out of European sensibilities with a natural ease. This reissue of A Legacy will give new readers a chance to swoon over her gracious felicities—and to come to share Bruce Chatwin’s assessment that, ‘when history of modern prose in English comes to be written, Mrs. Bedford will have to appear in any list of its most dazzling practitioners.’” —Sylvia Brownrigg"A Legacy is a story from a vanished world, a world before the deluge, and it provides its reader with the disorienting, melancholy pleasure derived from looking at old maps. It is a sophisticated book with a cosmopolitan gloss which flatters the reader, induces a nostalgia for other people’s past: for the vanished configurations of fallen empires, and days when the dice were shaken differently, where emotions were operatic and whims well-funded, where borders were crossed with ease but countries were different from each other, where beauty was viewed not merely as a personal asset but as part of an aesthetic tradition, and where raw experience had uncertain value till it was rationally examined and filtered through the lens of high culture...For a modern reader, some of the pleasure of A Legacy may be nostalgic, but the thrust of its intention is forward. What is the legacy of the nineteenth century, how and in what manner did it transform intolerant and divided societies into societies where mass murder was practiced?" —Hilary Mantel, The New York Review of Books“The characters are allowed to speak and see; they move about a great deal…Bedford is…interested in what they do, what they seem like to others, what they say, and what she can do to her sentences…Her genius is to make all this matter, to allow surface to suggest depth, to create excitement by playing with tone, to direct the reader toward the lives of her characters and the spirit of the age by using implication, by letting the rhythms do the work, by surprising with her diction and the texture of her prose and her dialogue. A Legacy makes clear that she is one of the finest and most original prose stylists of her age.” —Colm Tóibín, Bookforum"[W]itty and opulently beautiful…[a] richly realized historical drama….Partly ironic, partly nostalgic, A Legacy calls to mind other novels that portray the zenith and decline of an ostentatious old order. It’s as funny as Evelyn Waugh’s Brideshead Revisited but mercifully free of that book’s snobbery and God-bothering. It has the tragicomic temperament of Thomas Mann’s Buddenbrooks and Robert Musil’s The Man Without Qualities, but its writing, skimmed of exposition and distilled to quicksilver impressions, is more enticing. The novel fuses the heft and layering of a 19th-century family chronicle with a sparkling, allusive prose style learned from modernism…A Legacy is [Bedford’s] magnum opus, and a little harmony has been restored to literature now that it’s back again in bookstores." —Sam Sacks, The Wall Street Journal“The extraordinary feat of A Legacy is to be both an intimate family drama and an objective exposition of history...A Legacy is as perfect as a novel gets. It’s written with the sentence-by-sentence intensity of a short story, the narrative sweep of a history, and the tragi-comic interest of a family drama. Moreover, it is as significant as a novel gets, full of the interest of people distant from us in time and custom but recognizably human, and effortlessly illustrative of a period and society lost to us but incalculably important for the world we live in. Read it.” —Robert Minto, Open Letters Monthly

About the Author

Sybille Bedford (1911–2006) was born Sybille von Schoenebeck in Charlottenburg, Germany, to an aristocratic German father and a partly Jewish, British-born mother. Raised variously in Germany, Italy, France, and England, she lived with her mother and Italian stepfather after her father’s death when she was seven, and was educated privately. Encouraged by Aldous Huxley, Bedford began writing fiction at the age of sixteen and went on to publish four novels, all influenced by her itinerant childhood among the European aristocracy: A Legacy (1956), A Favourite of the Gods (1963), A Compass Error (1968), and Jigsaw (1989, short-listed for the Booker Prize). She married Walter Bedford in 1935 and lived briefly in America during World War II, before returning to England. She was a prolific travel writer, the author of a two-volume biography of her friend Aldous Huxley, and a legal journalist, covering nearly one hundred trials. In 1981 she was awarded the Order of the British Empire. Brenda Wineapple’s books include Ecstatic Nation: Confidence, Crisis, and Compromise, 1848–1877 and White Heat: The Friendship of Emily Dickinson and Thomas Wentworth Higginson, a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award. The recipient of a Pushcart Prize, a Guggenheim fellowship, and a 2014 Literature Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, Wineapple lives in New York City with her husband, the composer Michael Dellaira.

Peterson This is a difficult novel to review because it truly is sui generis, at least in my experience. It also was for me rather difficult to read. It has a labyrinthine plot and the writing at times is rather cryptic, with the result that I would have to re-read the novel to follow all the twists and turns and catch all the ironies and buried connections. Even so, A LEGACY is engaging, at times fascinating. It is set in Europe, primarily Germany, circa 1890 to 1910. It is the story of three families brought together and then entangled by unlikely marriages. One family, absurdly wealthy, is Jewish and lives in Berlin; the other two are aristocratic Catholic families from Baden, one of which is well-connected and influential in German politics and the other of which is rather feckless and is alienated from Germany (they speak French and gravitate towards French culture). On one level, A LEGACY is an impressionistic portrayal of Germany -- its culture, society, and politics -- during the quarter-century run-up to World War I: bourgeois pretentions and hypocrisy, aristocratic arrogance, anti-Semitism, and growing militarism. On another level, A LEGACY is a novel of moral quandaries, of doing the right thing amidst competing demands and urges, both social and personal. Near the end of the novel, one of the central characters is pressured to shade what she says about the suicide of her brother-in-law so that his wife, a devout Catholic, can believe that he died in a state of grace. She almost shrieks in rebellion: "There have been too many lies." She goes on: "Now it must have a stop. It is a feeling I have. It is choking me. I feel if there were one more lie we should all perish."I understand that Sybille Bedford was unflinchingly, and unsettlingly, straightforward and honest. Perhaps that is the fundamental legacy she writes about in this novel. But it is a legacy in another sense as well. It is clear that the novel is in many respects autobiographical. It is told in the first person by a girl, the youngest member of the three entwined families, born after many of the determinative events; she is recounting what she learned about the byzantine affairs, both those of family and those of Germany, that constitute a legacy for her personally and for Europe. Two modes of writing carry the story. One is expositive, and it tends to be dense, lavish, almost baroque. Nonetheless, I frequently was captivated by it. The other is dialogue, which often is presented as mere snippets of conversation. It is fast-paced, but one must constantly be alert for important details. There are occasional words, phrases, and even paragraphs in French and German. There is considerable barbed wit and much irony. There also is a fair measure of gravitas, maybe even wisdom.A LEGACY might be a great novel. To conclude that it indeed is, I would have to re-read it. Perhaps I will, should I live long enough.

By Orlando Pelliccia This is well worth reading for a novelized first person biography of someone living through two world wars. She documents her life as a member of the failing upper class with more guilt than wistful fawning. There are moments of silliness, some name dropping, but otherwise a good quickie. It's her best book by quite a bit.

Bright, brittle and melancholy By johnsaturn I've never read anything by Bedford before and this has been a wonderful surprise. It's easy to see why Waugh and Mitford liked her so much - it's a fundamentally Waughian enterprise with a similarly bright, brittle and melancholy slant to the writing - occasionally indulgent but often satisfying and genuinely arresting. The novel emerges as the work of an unsentimental stylist, alive to the absurdities and tragedies of life - as well as the things that give it grace. Is it a 'Great Book'? - probably not. But it's a great novel for people who like such things - I hope more people discover it.
