By Nina @ Life of a bookworm I could hardly wait to for this book to come out considering that the first one left us breathless in anticipation.Destined for a Dirt Road is a fantastic short story about two people who are in love and finally find their way to each other. An interesting and fast story without any idling. I like it as much as the first book.Relations between the characters are fantastic, beautifully described friendship and love between all of them. I'm really happy with the direction in which this story went. This is one of the books that you feel sad when you finish reading and sorry that was not at least a bit longer. It gets the five shiny stars from me.

David Copperfield (Xist Classics), by Charles Dickens

Amazon.com Review Beginning in 1854 up through to his death in 1870, Charles Dickens abridged and adapted many of his more popular works and performed them as staged readings. This version, each page illustrated with lovely watercolor paintings, is a beautiful example of one of these adaptations.

Because it is quite seriously abridged, the story concentrates primarily on the extended family of Mr. Peggotty: his orphaned nephew, Ham; his adopted niece, Little Emily; and Mrs. Gummidge, self-described as "a lone lorn creetur and everythink went contrairy with her." When Little Emily runs away with Copperfield's former schoolmate, leaving Mr. Peggotty completely brokenhearted, the whole family is thrown into turmoil. But Dickens weaves some comic relief throughout the story with the introduction of Mr. and Mrs. Micawber, and David's love for his pretty, silly "child-wife," Dora. Dark nights, mysterious locations, and the final destructive storm provide classic Dickensian drama. Although this is not David Copperfield in its entirety, it is a great introduction to the world and the language of Charles Dickens.

From School Library Journal Grade 7 Up-Dickens' novel narrated by Flo Gibson. Copyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist Gr. 8^-12. This is not the great classic novel but a few little-known episodes that Dickens excerpted from the book for his dramatic public readings. His performances were for adults who knew the book, and it's only readers familiar with the novel who will understand what's going on. This large-size volume is for teens interested in book illustration and dramatic performance. Marks (who illustrated Over the Hills and Far Away: A Book of Nursery Rhymes [1993]) captures the romance and the comedy of the excerpts with watercolor paintings on every page. But generally this is theatrical Dickens for nostalgic adults. Hazel Rochman

354 of 361 people found the following review helpful. Why it still matters By E. Kutinsky Somehow, I'd graduated from college - with a degree in English, no less - and had never had to read a single thing ever written by Charles Dickens. I read quite a bit on my own, but still found David Copperfield to be the height of ambition - my copy was 1001 pages long, and I hadn't ventured into a book over a thousand pages since I'd read The Stand at age 12. I cannot imagine that I am alone in completing my education and sidestepping Dickens altogether, so I think it's important I share my experience. In truth, the only reason I chose David Copperfield over, say, Great Expectations or Hard Times was the passing comment made by Jeff Daniels in The Squid And The Whale - dismissing a Tale of Two Cities as "minor Dickens," saying David Copperfield was "much richer."It is rich. I tend towards modern fiction nowadays, fiction that, unexpectedly, takes you deep inside the heart of its characters sometimes bewildering behavior and humanity. What strikes me about the complex nature of the characters in Copperfield is the way it seems that no effort at all has been used to distinguish each of them, yet there is no doubt as to how vivid they are. Each character speaks in a tone that is a perfect elucidation of who they are - you can hear, just in the dialogue, the calm wisdom of Agnes, the parasitic obsequiousness of Uriah Heep, the punctilious rambling of Micawber, the pleasantries that barely mask the aggression of Miss Dartle, the rigid boredom of the Murdstones, the spoiled impishness when Dora speaks (so precise I heard her voice in cloying and nasal babytalk in my head). It's a delicate balancing act to keep this level of detail so hidden in his work, and it makes the plot machinations speedy and exciting. The varied heights in this book astound - moments of drama, whimsy, intrigue, romance abound, and the book is even prone to its bit of slapstick - midgets falling over into umbrellas, or extreme umbrage taken when donkeys appear on lawns. What I mean is that it's easy to know you "should" read David Copperfield, but as anyone who's ever had a reading assignment knows, that doesn't necessarily make it something you'd want to do. I know, in a way, that David Copperfield is considered a standard - a book Tolstoy and Virginia Woolf, for example, hold as the pinnacle of English fiction - but then again, I slogged my way through supposed classics in school that, over time, have turned out to appear dull and unsurprising. David Copperfield is so underread these days that I had no idea what to expect, no notion of the amazing surprises within, the sublimely addictive cadence of Dickens' prose, the dazzle of his language. Reading it for no particular reason, then, was a triumph all around - a book that doesn't require a degree to "understand," that moves breezily through its pages, and that teaches a thing or two (or twenty) about the rich heights capable in fiction. It's as rich and winning as you've heard and then some.

119 of 123 people found the following review helpful. The Consummate Dickens By Jennifer B. Barton David Copperfield uses the story of Copperfield's life from birth through middle life to introduce and explore some wonderful personalities. Look more for deep and penetrating character studies than a fast moving plot line. It is not character study alone, however. Again and again, through many characters and many instances, he seems to really explore "the first mistaken impulse of an undisciplined heart", and that "there can be no disparity in marriage like unsuitability of mind and purpose". Look for these themes to come in from the very beginning and continue until they are actually spelled out by one character and contemplated by another. When David is born, his father is already buried in the churchyard nearby. He, his mother, and their servant Pegotty live happily enough as a family until his mother remarries. The new husband does not like frivolity or friendly association with servants but more than that, he does not like David. David is sent off to boarding school and then sent out to work. Barred from his mother's affections by his stepfather, Pegotty becomes a full mother figure and his ties to her and her family only deepen with time. Through her, he meets her brother, Mr. Pegotty; her nephew?, Ham, the widow Mrs. Gummidge and Mr. Pegotty's niece, Emily. At school, he makes fast friends with many boys but most especially with the privileged James Steerforth and the not so privileged Tommy Traddles, both of whom show up again in David's adulthood. In the bottling warehouse where he is sent to work as a child, he lodges with Mr. And Mrs. Micawber who are always in debt. They also show up again in his adulthood. When the station of life that he is being forced into at his tender age becomes too much for him, he escapes to seek out his eccentric great aunt Betsey Trotwood who takes him in and provides for him. Through her, he meets her lawyer, Mr. Wickfield, his daughter Agnes, Dr. Strong and his youthful bride, Annie and we mustn't forget Uriah Heep. He marries, works hard and becomes successful. These are the majority of the characters and it encompasses more than half of the novel to get to this point. (In my copy, that was just over four hundred and forty pages). The only slow part is after David finishes school and before he meets his wife. That part did seem to move slowly but, apart from that, the story moves very, very well and -after all the characters are set up and well developed - it takes off like a rocket and is difficult to put down without worrying about the various characters predicaments and wondering how he is going to pull all of these strings together. This IS Dickens after all. I won't spoil the meat of the plot line for you. Again, look for those themes - "the first mistaken impulse of an undisciplined heart", and "there can be no disparity in marriage like unsuitability of mind and purpose".David Copperfield is, if such things are possible, like a "Best Of" Dickens. It is one very substantial novel and stands alone as an exquisite masterpiece. Yet so many characters from his other novels seem to return here to be rounded out and more deeply developed. David Copperfield (himself) reminds me of Pip of Great Expectations, Betsey Trotwood of Miss Havisham, Mr. Micawber of Magwitch, and Agnes of Biddy. Mr. Murdstone seems to be of the Gradgrind line from Hard Times. One character reminded me not of another character in Dicken's work but of the vile character from Les Miserables (Victor Hugo) who repeatedly attempted to extort or do harm to Jean Valjean and Marius. It would be fun to have read all of Dicken's work before reading David Copperfield just to see Dicken's feelings of the various character types and what time has done to them in his mind. Of course, like any "Best Of", you could read only this one work and have a deep and abiding appreciation of Dickens without having read any of his others.

57 of 60 people found the following review helpful. The theme of David Copperfield By Stephen Balbach This is a first-person life-story of David Copperfield ("DC") that draws large on Dickens ("CD") own life. It was his "favorite child" and hailed as his best work by Tolstoy and Virginia Woolf. It includes a cast of over 50 characters. For its time it was one of the greatest works, and still is.To enjoy Dickens you have to let go, sit back, and enjoy the ride and not worry about the destination. Because although you can see the destination early on, like a mountain far off in the distance, the road to get there is entirely unpredictable and the distances traveled are deceiving to the minds eye. The trick is to enjoy the here and now, wherever the story happens to be, because Dickens will never follow the predictable path, and can leave one exasperated waiting for a plot closure. Consider a Dickens journey never-ending and you can just relax and enjoy the ride. The primary theme of the novel is how Copperfield learns to have a disciplined heart and morals. In other words, he grows up and becomes a man. This is seen throughout all the relationships in the book: love, business, friendship -- the mistakes of an "undisciplined heart". He learns self control to do the right thing even if his initial impulse is something else (Dora versus Agnus). He learns confidence in his dealings with the world (his innocent days of being ripped off all the time such as by waiters and cab drivers "my first fall"). He learns respect through the mistakes of others such as Steerforth. Self control, Confidence and Respect are all hallmarks of a grown man and we see Copperfield develop a sense of these, and the misfortunes that happen otherwise, to himself and those around him.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. I loved it from start to finish By Ms. T. Nicole I loved it from start to finish, the way the author has a way of captivating you with her words and allowing the words to come to life off the page is truly amazing. Although a bit predictable, it didn't take away from the story. I'm believing that part one was "predictable" for a bigger set up for book 2. The drama that unfolded at the end allows us to see that there is so much more to this story that we "think" we know but have no idea. I love it when an author can display this upfront and then take us on a journey like never before. Please hug and kiss your editor and then share your editor with the rest of us. I truly enjoyed this story. Lester ought to be ashamed of himself and poor Maxwell, I guess his little feelings are hurt now, oh, oh well, I guess it don't feel so good happening to you when you are the one that was doing it to someone else. I can't wait for the monkey wrenches to come our way in book 2. great read... appreciating your work.

That Which Was Lost By Rita Newlin This 10th book of the Amish Secret Widows, certainly took a twist, one could call what an entangled web we weave, it certainly wasn't going to let me lay the book down for long as I had to find out what was going to happen next. CNN correspondent Tom Foreman's remarkable journey from half-hearted couch potato to ultra-marathon runner, with four half-marathons, three marathons, and 2,000 miles of training in between; a poignant and warm-hearted tale of parenting, overcoming the challenges of age, and quiet triumph. As a journalist whose career spans three decades, CNN correspondent Tom Foreman has reported from the heart of war zones, riots, and natural disasters. He has interviewed serial killers and been in the line of fire. But the most terrifying moment of his life didn't occur on the job--it occurred at home, when his 18-year old daughter asked, "How would you feel about running a marathon with me?" At the time, Foreman was approaching 51 years old, and his last marathon was almost 30 years behind him. The race was just sixteen weeks away, but Foreman reluctantly agreed. Training with his daughter, who had just started college, would be a great bonding experience, albeit a long and painful one. My Year of Running Dangerously is Foreman's journey through four half-marathons, three marathons, and one 55-mile race. What started as an innocent request from his daughter quickly turned into a rekindled passion for long-distance running--for the training, the camaraderie, the defeats, and the victories. Told with honesty and humor, Foreman's account captures the universal fears of aging and failure alongside the hard-won moments of triumph, tenacity, and going further than you ever thought possible.

My Year of Running Dangerously: A Dad, a Daughter, and a Ridiculous Plan, by Tom Foreman

Review  “Moving…emotionally rewarding…Foreman says that marathon running—or training even—remind you of the preciousness of every moment, moment after moment. …Of course, I’m also a sucker for the Daddy-daughter stuff in the book.” —Scott Simon, NPR Weekend Edition“In Foreman’s witty and endearing chronicle, My Year of Running Dangerously, we follow his transformation from self-described couch potato to marathoner, then ultra-marathoner. You don’t have to be a runner to understand—and feel—the blood, sweat and tears Foreman pours into his training and his first marathon with his daughter.” —Bookpage“Tom Foreman has one of the most unique, interesting and honest minds that I've ever encountered in journalism. His book captures so much of what makes him such a pleasure to call colleague and friend. Despite the truly ridiculous amount of running he describes, this book is really about so much more: family, relationships, career, change, and ultimately about making it all fit. It may or may not awaken the hidden runner in you, but it will bring you along for his hilarious and moving journey.” —Jake Tapper, CNN    “Tom Foreman has an ability to capture honest humor while talking about something as horrible and painful as exercise. I loved everything about this book except the running.” —Jim Gaffigan   “In My Year of Running Dangerously Tom Foreman demonstrates how he balances his passion for running with all else that is important in life. I’ve interacted with thousands of runners throughout my career and I can say that Tom is one of the most passionate runners I’ve met.” —Meb Keflezighi, Olympic Silver medalist, Boston and NYC Marathon champion   “As a—don't laugh—basketball player, I understand full well Tom Foreman's mad desire to exert above his age. But his recital of the perils of long-distance running made me decide that turning the pages of this graceful and amusing saga was enough exercise for a summer day. Run—but only to your bookstore.” —Harry Shearer"Even the author's long-suffering family had to admit at the end of the season that he was happier, and readers will enjoy running alongside him." —Kirkus

About the Author Tom Foreman is an Emmy award-winning journalist and currently works as an anchor and reporter for CNN. By Ray Hester So you're fifty years old and haven't run in thirty years, what are you going to do when your eighteen year old daughter asks you to do a marathon with her? If you're CNN correspondent Tom Foreman you take her up on it and a year later you've done four half marathons, three marathons, and one ultra. Then you write a book giving perhaps the best description ever of running 55 miles. And the book? Funny - I mean who else could come up with the line (describing old timers who run): "And speed, no matter how hard you work at it, is a girl waving good-bye from a west-bound train". Priceless.

I thoroughly enjoyed it and recommend it to anyone who runs, lives with runners, needs a gift to buy a runner, or generally wants to get inside the head of an accomplished middle-age endurance runner. Tom Foreman has a relaxed writing style with a tremendous wit that resonates completely with me (yes, I LOL'ed multiple times, just ask my wife). He mixes in some nice historical info on marathons / ultramarathons, just enough so you understand them but not overwhelmingly so.As a middle-aged, middle-pack endurance athlete myself, I'm thrilled to see someone writing transparently about the challenges of training - not just on the runner, but on everyone around them. Tom openly shares his gaffs, his guilts, and his victories as he tries to manage all of this with his family and a demanding career. This isn't easy, and I applaud him for being open about it.The other reason I loved this book is that we share a similar story. Tom's daughters go to GA Tech, as does my son. Tom's daughter asked him to run her first marathon in ATL with her. My son did the same to me in Oct 2014, and we ran it together in March 2015. Our kids got to train in ATL over the winter, while we had to train over the winter up north (Tom in DC, me in Chicago). Both of our kids had to press thru pain and challenges to finish, and both of our kids made it through. I've done triathlons, half-marathons, and none of them even come close the the experience I had with my son. So when Tom shared his experience, it totally took me back. And yes, I cried like a baby a few times - along with the laughter. Thanks to The Foreman family for this book. Tom may have written it, but none of it happens without all of you playing a key part. May you keep running together and forming amazing memories that last a lifetime.

Not only does Foreman seamlessly sew running history and strategy into his own engaging true stories, but the stories are engaging, entertaining and motivating in a way that reaches runners and non-runners alike. This is one book I plan to read again and again.

*New Adult Romance* **Explicit Scenes and Language** Let your hair down, Caroline, they said. It'll be fun, they said. I know I've closed myself off in a major way in the past year, ever since “the incident” where I messed up my life completely. It's past time I try to live again or just give up completely. But this is quite possibly the craziest thing I've ever done. In a last ditch effort to invigorate myself, I'm standing outside Oren Tenning's bedroom, I just peeled off the sexiest pair of underwear I own, and my hand is already raised to knock. My brother would disown me for doing anything with his best friend, and he'd probably kill Oren. But if I play my cards right, no one will ever know about this. Not even Ten. Maybe after tonight, I’ll finally get over this stupid, irrational crush I hate having on the biggest jerk I’ve ever met. Or maybe I’ll just end up falling for him even harder. Maybe I’ll discover there’s so much more to my crude, carefree hunk than meets the eye.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. A Perfect 5 for Linda Kage!!! By I Heart YA Books Hold on to your heart…and your panties, ladies. Oren 'TEN' Tenning is going to steal both of them. Ten (Oren), the dirty talking, crude joking, womanizer, man-slut—and lets not forget major jerk—that I so fell in love with through the other Forbidden Men books. It's his turn for this bad boy to be reformed, and Caroline Gamble is just the feisty woman to do it. Caroline is the female version of Ten(Oren), minus the slut part. But when it comes to the dirty talking, smartass mouth, and sarcastic comebacks, she can stand her ground against the biggest jerk she ever met. It's her heart that's having a problem, because Oren Tenning is Caroline's perfect ten of a man. Caroline sees the sexy beautiful man underneath the bad boy persona, and she has fallen hard for the big jerk Oren, but his womanizing has got to go.Ten has kept a wall of steel around his heart. Love and that “one woman forever BS” that his friends fall for is not going to have him giving up his heart to just one woman. But like the saying goes, 'the harder they are the harder they fall'. And Ten falls like a ton of bricks for Caroline Gamble, the one girl he can't have. Hell, he can't even look at her too long or big brother Noel is going to make sure Ten's man junk never works again.Ten and Caroline's story is one I have been waiting for, and Linda Kage did not disappoint. I didn't think I could love this big beautiful jerk Ten(Oren) even more than I already did, but I do. But it's not all laughs with Ten and Caroline, and I did shed a few tears over these two broken hearts. I do have to say that I will never think of the state of West Virginia in the same way ever again and I fear if anybody says West Virginia I will more than likely start laughing my behind off at them. Thank you, Linda Kage, for that forever image in my mind, but it is a beautiful image. It goes without saying that I love Linda Kage's Forbidden Men series and I can't wait till the next book which is going to be Knox's story. Knox Parker is a new character and I can't wait to meet him. I highly recommend Ten and all the Forbidden Men and the ladies that tame these bad boys as a must read.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Caroline and Oren's story will steal your heart. By DragonflyReads Oren Tenning is the stereotypical football jock/man-whore. We've learned about his promiscuous ways in prevous Forbidden Men books but this is his time to shine. He’s had a thing for Caroline Gamble since the day he laid eyes on her. She was in a bad way and he knew he had to have her. Unlucky for him, her brother is his best friend and will stop at nothing to keep them apart. After traumatic revelations on his part, he's able to work out some of his demons and go forth with what he truly wants in life.Caroline Gamble is still recovering from a very traumatic experience that landed her in the custody of her older brother and a new student at Ellamore University. She's making friends and coming out of her shell but she really has one thing - or person - on her mind. Oren Tenning. He's crude, rude and the perfect man for her. She goes out on a limb to get him and the rest is, as they say, history. The Forbidden Men series is holding steady as my all-time favorite series. Linda Kage keeps her storylines fresh and fun, always. I didn't think one of her stories could top Quinn and Zoey’s in With Every Heartbeat, but then she goes and does it with A Perfect Ten. It's heartfelt and hilarious and I had a few cries in there too. The perfect blend of emotions for a new adult romance, in my opinion. Caroline's movie knowledge was amazing and her filthy mind keeps right up with Ten's. Loved this and cannot wait to meet Knox Parker in Worthless!

8 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Horrible female character!!! By Lillymay Black I was so looking forward to this book. From the previous books I couldn't wait to read about Caroline and Ten. I was somewhat disappointed. I just found it extremely hard to be in Caroline's head. I new right at the beginning when she went to Oren's apartment and had sex with him in the dark, because he wouldn't sleep with her other wise I was in trouble. I mean what girl has so little respect for herself that she would have sex with a guy even though she knows he has no idea who he's sleeping with. It seemed so desperate and immature. It was strange for me. I thought with all she had been through, maybe she would have been more mature. As far as Ten was concerned he was exactly like I expected. What I didn't expect was for her to chase someone who repeatedly slept with random bimbos in front of her. I really just didn't like this book. I will say again the writing is great, just not the story.

A generation ago, fewer than 5 percent of girls started puberty before the age of 8; today, that percentage has more than doubled. Early puberty is not just a matter of physical transformation―it’s also deeply psychological, with a myriad of effects that can put a girl at higher risk for behavioral problems and long-term health challenges.

In this reassuring and empowering guide, Louise Greenspan, MD, and Julianna Deardorff, PhD―two leading experts on the root causes and potential consequences of early puberty in girls―deliver vital advice on how to prevent and manage early puberty. They explain surprising triggers―from excess body fat to hormone-mimicking chemicals to emotional stressors in a girl’s home and family life―and offer highly practical strategies, including how to limit exposure to certain ingredients in personal care and household products, which foods to eat and which to avoid, ways to improve a child’s sleep routine to promote healthy biology, and more.

The New Puberty is an engaging, urgently needed road map to helping young girls move forward with confidence, ensuring their future well-being.

Excellent Resource for early puberty By Talvi The focus of the New Puberty book is early development in girls - with examples as young as 5 year old hitting puberty (but mostly geared at the 8-9 year range). Yet ideally this is also a book for parents with young girls who haven't started showing puberty signs yet to give them an idea of what to look for and some insight into why the modern girl is hitting puberty so much earlier/younger than her predecessors. The book is extremely informative and ideal for both parents (written in a friendly and accessible way) and practitioners (many recent studies are published and put together). As a parent, I look for these types of books to be informative and yet not have all the answers - I don't want another 'fad' or narrowminded perspective on parenting. What I do need is to know what recent findings there are and have those put into perspective of our past approaches to dealing with girls hitting puberty (earlier or otherwise). The book is broken down as follows : Part 1: Causes of Early Puberty (defining puberty, potential repercussions, and puberty prompters). Part 2: Strategies (is medicine necessary, precautionary steps, healthy habits, the brain of a developing girl, the "talk"). In effect, the "Why" and then the "what to do."This isn't a hype book with a lot of call outs or pretty pictures. It's a very straightforward, informative, intelligent approach to the subject with the understanding that we are still learning so much about the subject (and will probably never know completely about the process of turning girls into women). And, although hitting puberty early is natural, it can also be very problematic for the girl and create issues that will need to be dealt with by parents. Also important is that there are steps parents can take to help prevent the onset of puberty at an earlier age. The book notes that the three most powerful forces at work in early puberty deal with weight, exposure to chemicals, and social/psychological trauma. Simply working toward a better diet at 5-6 years old could have great benefits toward discouraging the body to kick into puberty early. This is a very good read for parents of young girls, whether or not they are seeing signs of puberty. Sometimes, parents really need an intelligent and straightforward presentation of factors that are (or may) affect the growth of their child. Especially since we are bombarded with 'answers' from relatives and media that are without basis or fact.Reviewed from an ARC.

By Kindle Customer As a mom of preteen daughters, I found this book to be insightful, informative and also practical. I wish I had this book when my daughters were younger! I especially loved all the practical information offered in Chapter 5- How to manage environmental risks and Chapter 8- Don't have the "talk", start the conversation. If you have daughters, this is a "must have" book to add to your parenting library.

With Stockdale in the lead, the Blenheims and Hurricanes of Desert Air Force, and the Rover Strike and Reconnaissance Squadron in their desert vehicles, ceaselessly attack Germany's Afrika Korps deep behind their lines. Together they find and destroy a German fortress hidden in a remote desert wadi, which changes the course of the campaign. In the struggle, Stockdale’s Lieutenant Glashan bales out of his plane and finds himself amongst the enemy. 5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Good editing would have earned this a 5-star rating. By Ashalka Wow, this was an awesome start to what looks to be an outstanding epic fantasy romance. Kieran, of the bloodline of Beauty, and Cory, of the bloodline of Beast, are fated true mates. This is a problem that they will have to fight and suffer through. Their families are causing big problems especially since they have been warring each other for eons. At first thought, it seemed to be a new twist on Beauty & The Beast, but when you really look this seems more of a Romeo and Juliette story.I really loved the action and the battles against evil minions, evil relatives and the expectations of family traditions. I really enjoyed the twists about Beauty and the way her family story has changed through time. Loved it! As much as I loved this story, gave it a 4-star rating in spite of the serious deficit in editing. I hope when the next book in this series comes out that editing issue will be rectified. Although I'll probably read it anyway and flinch. This is my first read of Kethric Wilcox but will be looking for more from this talented story-teller.

Book Review by PizzyGirl By PrismBookAlliance 3.5 of 5 StarsFor original review, visit the Prism Book Alliance blog online.Kethric Wilcox is a new to me and a new author. This is his first book and I have to say, it shows. He could benefit from the coaching of a seasoned author and could definitely use the services of a professional editor. I struggled sometimes to understand the writing because there was a great lack/misuse of punctuation. However, I really enjoyed this twist on the legend of beauty and the beast. It was unique and not exactly what I was expecting. There was great world building and I love the different magical elements. I enjoyed the idea of trackers, huntresses, good shifters, and evil shifters. I really like that there was a bit of plot to keep me guessing. I was really pulled in. I liked that the villain remained off page as there is so much potential for this master to be developed. The ending left things set up nicely for book two without being a traditional cliff hanger. I am looking forward to more. The relationship between Cory and Kieran felt a bit over the top perfect and sappy. The word choices used for descriptions were flowery and often times very feminine. This union felt forced because everything was always so perfect when they were together and there was so much talk of soul mates and love. It was more telling than showing, though there was some showing that was done well.I purchased this one on a whim, but after reading it, I decided to write up a formal review because I think this author has great potential. This story was very creative and well thought out. With the help of a good editor/beta reader/seasoned author, I think this story could have been great and Mr. Wilcox could be very successful in the future.

Llewellyn If you enjoy paranormal M/M romance ~ and I do mean ROMANCE, at its sweetest and darkest ~ you'll love *Tracker: Legend of the Silver Hunter* by debut author Kethric Wilcox.Kieran Belle and Corwin Cooper are descendants of the Houses of Beauty and Beast respectively. This twist on the fairy-tale is both original and bold. Rather than simply make Belle and Cooper opposites, Wilcox makes them mortal enemies, born antagonists. And so the hunt begins ...The lightness of the love relation is given weight and ballast by the conflict the author contrives between Good and Evil, between rival Houses, bloodlines, families, clans. Shades of the Capulets & the Montagues and the Hatfields & the McCoys abound. The suspense is heightened by the same trope proclaimed producer Val Lewton used to such eerie effect in his legendary black-and-white noir fim *Cat People*. In that pre-Technicolor 1942 war-time thriller, the Beast of Prey remained always unseen, always to one side, always off-camera. At most we heard it growl or saw its shadow flicker on the walls. We never once met the monster eye-to-eye, never once witnessed it pounce. Menaces unseen are always more terrifying than those seen; invisible footsteps tracking us in the darkness, through mist and fog, quicken the heartbeat, and are every mystery writer's favourite device. Likewise, Wilcox's bogeyman lurks just over our shoulder, but always out of sight. He simmers below the murk, boiling up out of the Id to horrify us with sheer, primordial terror, with evil unspeakable ...In the end, we root for Kieran and Corwin as we root for Romeo and Juliet. Are they star-crossed lovers, or will they find a way to overcome the bitter blood feud that threatens their young love with an early grave? Will they bury the ancient lineal strife, or be buried by it?That's for the spinners and weavers to say, not me. That's the question only Kethric Wilcox can answer. With this first book of what promises to be a rewarding series, he's off to a great start. I, for one, am looking forward to the rest of the story!

Not too predictable By Book Me Ummm...I think I enjoyed this book a lot but there seems to be a theme with Fallon's books that I can tell where the heroin keeps turning these virginal (in the sense of chick on chick) women into falling in love with them for who they are. I guess that's the type of world she would like it to be, albeit not the typical encounter. Anyway, it doesn't take away from the story. As with her other books, there's a lot of butt kicking, espionage and Taka from her other books is also mentioned. Good book

It was the romance, the drama and the action. I don't know about anyone else but I enjoyed the book and was constantly on my toes about what was going to happen next. I love the relationship that the sisters had withKimora and Nevah. The fact that the sisters experienced the same crazy B***h situation had me thinking like what's up with these women and their extra parts that drives these women crazy and where can I find one to love me like they loved their ladies Lol. All in all I would love to read another book about the sisters.

Wasn't in love with it but I don't think you have to be By Jocelyn While I'm always looking for romance novels involving Black queer folks I do feel like we could have spent more time developing the characters for this. I would call it erotica over romance which wasn't what I was looking for but again has its place. It's getting extra points from me just on the strength of being a representation of racial diversity in erotic (it's not just straight white people.) I wish the main character's life was more fleshed out so that the plot twist about their body didn't come across so fetishistically.

An authoritative edition of three Beat novels by the legendary author of On the Road. The third volume in The Library of America’s edition of the writings of Jack Kerouac opens with Visions of Cody, the groundbreaking work originally written in the early 1950s and published posthumously in 1972, in which Kerouac first treats the material later immortalized in On the Road. In it he moves beyond his early literary models to discover his own unique “bop prosody,” mixing closely observed description, free-form scats, and transcribed conversation to create an impassioned and hallucinatory portrait of his friend and idol Neal Cassady, here reimagined as Cody Pomeray. Visions of Gerard (1963) is a deeply moving meditation on Kerouac’s older brother, who died at nine of rheumatic fever, and who for Kerouac became an emblem of saintliness. The intensely focused and harrowing Big Sur (1962) finds fictional alter ego Jack Duluoz returning to California to escape fame and celebrity, a fateful decision that leads to a dangerous affair with Pomeray’s mistress, a nightmarish alcohol-fueled breakdown, and a desperate struggle for sobriety.

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Another superb addition to Library of America (Jack Kerouac) By Paul Maher Jr. I interviewed the editor, Professor Todd Tietchen for this superb collection:Is there a schedule by Library of America toward publishing Kerouac’s works?I can’t really speak for Library of America’s schedule for publishing the remaining Kerouac novels. I simply don’t know. I am editing another Kerouac volume for them, O Rich and Unbelievable Life!: Uncollected Prose Writings of Jack Kerouac, scheduled for publication in September 2016. Some highlights of that volume include: I Wish I Were You; Memory Babe; The August-November 1951 VA hospital journal; and English translations of La Nuit est Ma Femme and Sur Le Chemin (trans. by J.C. Cloutier of UPenn, who also discovered the manuscript of the lost Claude McKay novel). This volume shall constitute a major contribution to the public corpus of Kerouac’s work, and I think more generally that the association with Library of America helps affix Kerouac with an authorial legitimacy that many still seem hesitant to acknowledge. I don’t know if that also speaks to my “overall intention” in participating in these editorial projects, though I do see the canonization they connote as worthy of effort and care, and hoped to present these works in the best possible light (as did everyone else involved).I believe that Kerouac was one of the most important experimental American writers of the Cold War period, that his influence resonates throughout U.S. expressive culture in ways that have yet to be properly acknowledged, and I hope that these volumes might help foment such an acknowledgement. Was there a concern to create an “established text” such as that prepared by Noel Polk with Faulkner? What was your overall intention going forward when editing this volume? In terms of the Visions of Cody, etc., volume, the goal was to publish authoritative texts of all three works, along with critical apparatus (endnotes, character key) that could support the needs and curiosities of general readers, Kerouac aficionados, and scholars, which I suppose is to say that it’s a scholarly project conceived for a general readership (LoA’s guiding public humanities goal as I understand it). I also think the volume is particularly well-suited for use in university classrooms.Which novel posed the biggest challenge in preparation of notes? Why?Visions of Cody was the most challenging volume. As you’re already aware, the Tape section alone is thick with literary, musical, pop cultural, and philosophical allusions. As challenging as documenting those allusions might have been, they also opened Kerouac to me in this new way, as I got to see the breadth of his influences and interests with the objectivity characteristic of bibliographic and textual scholarship.Visions of Cody also required the most attentive line-by-line editing as a result of its publication history. While the grounding text for this edition is the ’72 publication, there were some differences between that edition, the Laughlin edition, and the typed manuscript in the Berg Collection. Those were my three orienting texts and some changes were made to the ’72 based on the Laughlin and manuscript. Here are three examples of those changes. First, Laughlin typeset Kerouac’s dashes in a markedly different fashion than the ’72 edition. Based on Kerouac’s typing style in the manuscript, and the fact that Kerouac was alive and involved in the New Directions edition, a decision was made to try to replicate Laughlin’s dashes as closely as possible. Second, the abstract drawing has been printed upside-down for years, since the ’72 version. It was rotated back to its original coordinates (180 degrees) as Kerouac inserted it within his typescript. Finally, Kerouac used rows of dollar signs throughout the typescript as editorial directions (marking section breaks). They were not to be printed in the actual text. Yet for some reason, early on in the ’72 edition (and subsequent editions) a line of oversized dollar signs was printed early on in the text as if it was a textual element (around page 21 or so). There’s no justification for this; it was an (overly enthusiastic?) editorial error that has been perpetuated in the subsequent editions. So that has also been eliminated. As we’ve discussed before, I’ve also wondered whether the misconceptions of Kerouac as “anything goes improvisatory word-slinger” contributed to a history of editorial/typographical errors across his published corpus. The other two books had a more stable publication history and I tried to adhere to their first editions (including reinserting the illustrations into Gerard, as I think they’re important to the text’s history and to the reader’s experience of the text). Some alterations were made to both (corrections of typographical errors) and those are spelled out in the “Notes on Texts” section.

The Great Rememberer And The Library of America By Robin Friedman The Library of America has helped Americans find a better understanding of their country through its volumes of American literature, history, criticism, philosophy, and more. The LOA has not been afraid to make controversial choices. It has published the works of well-known, canonical writers, such as Melville and Whitman, together with unknown writers who deserve to be remembered, for example the novelist Dawn Powell, and forms of genre writing which tend to be slighted, such as noir, as in the LOA's collection of fiction by David Goodis. Among the LOA's more controversial decisions will be the three volumes it has now devoted to Jack Kerouac (1922 -- 1969). The first volume, published in 2007 and edited by Douglas Brinkley, collected five Kerouac "Road Novels", including his most famous book "On the Road" and another popular work, "The Dharma Bums". The second volume, published in 2012 and edited by Marilene Phipps-Kettlewell, was a broad collection of Kerouac's poetry, including "Mexico City Blues" and "The Scripture of the Golden Eternity". The LOA has now published a third collection of Kerouac edited by Todd Tietchen, Assistant Professor of English at the University of Massachusetts in Kerouac's home town of Lowell. The volume includes three novels, "Visions of Cody", "Visions of Gerard", and "Big Sur" that are likely to be known only to devoted Kerouac readers. These books are erratic and mixed in their merit and content. It is tempting to seek a common thread in these three books. Each is heavily autobiographical, but this is so for all Kerouac's novels. The books offer Kerouac's portrayal of his life at different times, from his childhood in Lowell to his heady days as a young man which resulted in "On the Road" to his deterioration from alcohol and drug abuse in the 1960s. Each book features as its main character an individual loosely based on Kerouac named Jack Duluoz. Kerouac intended all his books to form part of what he called "The Duluoz Legend" and claimed that he intended to return to and edit his writings in his old age. In a short preface to "Big Sur", Kerouac wrote:"[My novels] are just chapters in the whole work which I call The Duluoz Legend. In my old age I intend to collect all my work and re-insert my pantheon of uniform names, leave the long shelf full of books there, and die happy. The whole thing forms one enormous comedy, seen through the eyes of poor Ti Jean (me), otherwise known as Jack Duluoz, the world of raging action and folly and also of gentle sweetness seen through the keyhole of his eye."In an introductory essay to "Visions of Cody" titled "The Great Rememberer", included at the end of this volume, Allen Ginsberg reflected on Kerouac's writings as remembering and chronicling his life as well as an America of the 1930s and 1940s that had vanished. Ginsberg saw Kerouac's writings as celebrating the value and visions of an earlier United States. For example, Ginsberg wrote:" Mortal America's here ... disappearing Elevated, diners, iceboxes, dusty hat racks preserved from oblivion ... Larimer Street itself this year in ruins resurrected spectral through Visions of Cody -- And the poolhall itself gone to parking lot & Fun Adult Movies the heritage of Neal's sex fantasies on the bench watching Watson shoot snooker --)"******"I don't think it's possible to proceed further in America without first understanding Kerouac's tender brooding compassion for bygone scene & personal Individuality odidity'd therein".Kerouac as a "great rememberer" pervades these novels which I will discuss briefly in what follows. The largest and most ambitious book in this volume is "Visions of Cody" which Kerouac completed in 1952 but which was not published in full until 1972, three years after Kerouac's death. This sprawling, maddening work celebrates Neal Cassady, here named Cody Pomeray, as well as Kerouac's own life. Cassady, named Dean Moriarty, was the travelling companion and main character of Kerouac, named Sal Paradise, in "On the Road". Kerouac worked to write additional sections for this novel, but soon realized that his manuscript had become so long that it formed its own independent book. "Visions of Cody" is a mixture of depiction and legend as Kerouac imagines and recreates Cassady's early life in Denver slums. poolhalls, and reform schools. In its opening and closing sections "Visions of Cody" includes passages of beauty and perception, together with materials on sex, scatology and drug use that were unpublishable in its day. The middle section of the book consists of transcriptions of taped conversations between Kerouac and Cassady when both were high or drunk. Some of these tapes include valuable, rambling stories of the participant's experiences and life, but with their length, they disrupt the flow of the book. Still, this book offers an extraordinary portrayal of Cassady, as Kerouac saw and projected him. Kerouac regarded "Visions of Cody" as his best book, and he may have been right. The second "visionary" book, "Visions of Gerard" was published in 1962 but written in 1956. It consists of Kerouac's remembrances of his beloved older brother, Gerard, who died at the age of nine when Kerouac himself was four. Kerouac idealized has brother as a potential saint who loved animals, taught non-judgment, and had a deep, pantheistic religious sense. The novel captures the grief attendant upon the death of a young child. It is also about Kerouac himself, about working class Lowell in the 1920s, and about Kerouac's family. The text in this volume includes the drawings by James Spanfeller which accompanied the original publication. The drawings add to the appeal of the book. The final novel in this volume, "Big Sur" also was published in 1962. The book describes Kerouac's wish to escape publicity and fame by travelling to California to recover his sobriety and balance at a cottage owned by his friend, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, in California's beautiful Big Sur. The book shifts in scene between Big Sur and the streets and bars of San Francisco where Kerouac meets old friends, including Cassady, just released from prison, and his wife. Kerouac is painfully honest and self-lacerating in this book, which describes his inability to form a lasting relationship with a woman, his self-centeredness, and, most importantly his alcoholism. The climactic scene of the novel consists of a vivid portrayal of a hallucinating Kerouac suffering from delirium tremens. In 2013, Michael Polish directed and wrote the screenplay for a moderately successful film version of "Big Sur".Some readers will be hesitant about these books. After some reflection, I am grateful to the Library of America for including them in this volume and in its series. The books capture a distinctive American voice which is worth preserving. Todd Tietchen's notes to the volume are detailed and capture the breadth of Kerouac's readings and of his allusions to popular culture. The volume's also includes a "character key" which identifies the named characters in the novels with the characters in Kerouac's life and a chronology of Kerouac's life, which is identical to the chronology in the LOA's earlier Kerouac volumes. The LOA kindly provided me with a review copy of this title.Robin Friedman
