4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Masterfully manipulates readers' expectation and empathy By Tracy Gold As the conflict rose, I was screaming at Amanda. What in the world was she doing? How could she be so cruel? Then, Beverly-Whittemore smoothly showed exactly why Amanda's actions were understandable, if still cruel. This masterful twist left me thinking about the story long afterwards--why did I judge Amanda so harshly? What lessons does Francesca, the young narrator, learn from this afternoon? Like Beverly-Whittemore's other writing, this story is so well-rendered that you can almost smell the chlorine of this afternoon in the pool. Yet there's plenty of room for the reader's imagination to carry on long after the last page.

By Erin Cosenza Reading FRITO LAY threw me back to the days before I could fill out a bikini, when French fries and ice cream had zero effect on my figure and jumping off the high dive was the scariest thing I could imagine. (And how I wish it still were!) Back then, I didn't realize that the pool club could be such a dangerous place, especially for a little one....now, as a mom, I found myself wanting to scream through the pages of the book at the central characters for their behavior.FRITO LAY is both utterly dark and completely relatable. Everyone, regardless of age, gender, skin color, whatever, has their secrets and their darkness; that darkness comes out of some more readily and more violently than it does out of others, as you'll discover while you're reading this. It's very reminiscent of Ms. Beverly-Whittemore's BITTERSWEET in that it explores social and class relationships with a strong focus on the cattiness and often less-than-genuine affection between female characters. The only downside to this short story, as opposed to the novel that is BITTERSWEET, is its length -- you're left hanging as though you'd decided to jump off the high dive and then grabbed onto the board in a last-minute change of heart. I want to know more about these characters, their backstories, and what happens next!If you choose to download FRITO LAY and then discover that you love it, I strongly suggest that you immediately follow it with BITTERSWEET!! By Victoria In FRITO LAY, Beverly-Whittemore, as she did in BITTERSWEET, uses the perspective of a less affluent and less worldly protagonist to explore power dynamics, romantic entanglements, and the peculiarities of youthful female friendship. The author skillfully tells the reader quite a lot with only a few words--critical for achieving the story's depth, given its short length. And she does an equally good job of ratcheting up the tension leading up to the high-stakes climax. My only disappointment, really, was that I was left wanting to see/know/experience a little more about some of the characters.I'm typically more of a novel reader, but some short stories, maybe because they are short enough that some things are inevitably left unsaid, can really capture the imagination in the best possible way. I'd put FRITO LAY in that camp.

By Rochelle Gordon After reading a slew of ketogenic diet books and starting out on my own with the diet, I was left with many questions about how to handle situations that came up or confusions created by all those books. After looking at the table of contents in the preview I saw that this book addressed many of these situations. After purchasing and reading it, all of my questions and issues were solved. If you are serious about keto success, this book is a must read!

About the Author

JOCKO WILLINK is author of Extreme Ownership, a decorated retired Navy SEAL officer, and co-founder of Echelon Front, where he is a leadership instructor, speaker, and executive coach. Jocko spent 20 years in the U.S. Navy SEAL Teams, starting as an enlisted SEAL and rising through the ranks to become a SEAL officer. As commander of SEAL Team Three's Task Unit Bruiser during the battle of Ramadi, he orchestrated SEAL operations that helped the "Ready First" Brigade of the US Army's First Armored Division bring stability to the violent, war-torn city. Task Unit Bruiser became the most highly decorated Special Operations Unit of the Iraq War. Jocko returned from Iraq to serve as Officer-in-Charge of training for all West Coast SEAL Teams. There, he spearheaded the development of leadership training and personally instructed and mentored the next generation of SEAL leaders who have continued to perform with great success on the battlefield. During his career, Jocko was awarded the Silver Star, the Bronze Star, and numerous other personal and unit awards. In 2010, Jocko retired from the Navy and launched Echelon Front where he teaches the leadership principles he learned on the battlefield to help others lead and win. LEIF BABIN is author of Extreme Ownership, a decorated former Navy SEAL officer, and co-founder of Echelon Front, where he serves as leadership instructor, speaker, and executive coach. A graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, Leif served thirteen years in the Navy, including nine as a Navy SEAL. As a SEAL platoon commander in SEAL Team Three's Task Unit Bruiser, he planned and led major combat operations in the Battle of Ramadi that helped the "Ready First" Brigade of the US Army's 1st Armored Division bring stability to the violent, war-torn city. Task Unit Bruiser became the most highly decorated special operations unit of the Iraq War. Leif returned from combat as the primary leadership instructor for all officers graduating from the SEAL training pipeline. There, he reshaped SEAL leadership training to better prepare SEAL officers for the immense challenges of combat. During his last tour, Leif served as Operations Officer and Executive Officer at a SEAL Team where he again deployed to Iraq with a Special Operations Task Force. He is the recipient of the Silver Star, two Bronze Stars, and a Purple Heart. By Ladybug Extreme Ownership is written by two former Navy SEALs, Jocko Willink and Leif Babin, who now head a leadership training company. Both men are pretty hardcore, I must admit. The experiences they share in this book are intense and eye-opening--not to mention unique. There aren't many books out there that give such detailed glimpses into the lives of SEALs in action.The book is structured in a very basic and clear way. The authors convey one main point per chapter by sharing a story from their battlefield experiences, then highlighting the main principle of that story, and finally giving a concrete example of how this principle applies in business settings.Their main points can be summarized as follows:(*) The leader is always responsible. (This is what they call "extreme ownership." Basically, leaders must always "own" the mistakes and shortcomings of their teams.)(*) Everyone on the team must believe in the mission.(*) Work with other teams to achieve mutually beneficial outcomes.(*) Keep plans simple, clear, and concise.(*) Check your ego.(*) Figure out your priorities, and then act on them one at a time.(*) Clarify your mission (i.e., your plan).(*) Engage with your higher-ups; keep them in the loop--especially when they frustrate you.(*) Act decisively, even when things are chaotic.(*) And the last chapter is a summary of the seemingly contradictory qualities of a leader.In my opinion, the simplicity, clarity, and structure of this book are it's greatest strengths. I knew exactly where the authors were going with their points, and I understood exactly the message they were trying to communicate. The book is incredibly easy to follow.I do have two minor complaints. First, the book is really repetitive at parts. There are several moments when the authors share a complete story or personal thought--and then share the story again, but this time in the context of telling it to either their SEAL teams or to a group of business executives. It became a little tedious. If I hear the story once, I don't need another play-by-play, no matter how interesting it was the first time around.Second, while this book is very descriptive--especially with the battle scenes--it is also incredibly restrained, almost cold. There is basically no emotion in this book--which feels weird, because even though it's a book about leadership, it's also a book about war, too. If you are going to aim to teach me something through your intense and sometimes tragic experiences, well then let's get into it. I'm not looking for manufactured drama, but you don't have to scrub it all clean for me, either. Ultimately, I ended up feeling like the authors didn't trust me enough with the whole story. And I wanted more than that.Still, I appreciated what Willink and Babin had to share. Their lessons are insightful and thought-provoking, and I can definitely see how their experiences will help guide leaders in the business world. Extreme Ownership is a worthwhile read, yes--but also a somewhat muted one. Take it for what it is.

Excellent Book on Leadership By John Doe There are thousands of leadership books out there, and most of them are decent, value added, and … redundant. For the most part they all regurgitate the same information. This book is better than most because it does a nice job of weaving in military leadership models that have been honed over thousands of scenarios. The book is structured well and each section contains the following: first is an interesting and detailed account of a US Navy Seals combat engagement. The story is followed by a summary of the principle the engagement is intended to teach. Finally, how that principle should be applied in a business environment. Some of my favorite ideas presented in this book counter some of the rampant trends in modern business models. For example: many business are big on the concept of a “flat organization” – they convince themselves that more direct contact with managers improves coordination and communication. Most importantly, they love that it is cheaper (fewer managers). However, this book rightfully points out the realities of “span of control” and shows how managing more than 6 people becomes unwieldy – and ultimately, the manager is spread so thin that interactions break down, grinding communication and coordination to a halt. I also especially love the application of the “laws of combat” to the business world. This is a great book for anybody that is interested in military history and wants to be a better leader.

Once from the stance of being a career driven woman with hopes of learning new leadership tatics to help me in my career endeavors. The second time through, I read from the stance of being a mom, trying to understand how these leadership principals could help me as the leader within my household and more importantly, how to raise my children to leaders. This book has had a profound impact on me in both my professional and personal life. Leaders in ANY capacity NEED to read this book.

I want to warn you up front, there is a cliffhanger of sorts but there is also a HFN (happy for now); the main storyline is concluded. The ending left me wanting to read more but not so much feeling devastated because I have to wait to read more.The blurb for the book gives you the background for the story so I won’t retell it here. Just know that if you love vampires and erotic romance you have to get this book! The heat between Dylan and Emmie is off the charts. There is also suspense and intrigue which kept me thoroughly captivated by this book.Dylan’s friend Quentin is an interesting secondary character and I can’t wait to read his story.This book is Delilah Devlin’s captivating storytelling at her finest.I received an ARC of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review but I loved it so much that I also bought a copy.

It was a great story, I loved the characters and would definitely recommend this book.Emmy Harris is not the type of girls men normally hit on. She knows she is not model material and has some extra padding around the edges and she is good with that.Dylan O'Hara is a century old Vampire he knows he needs to feed but he is bored with the blood whores he is surrounded by.When Emmy walks into The Cavern she notices the eyes instantly upon her and soon her best friend leads her into a situation she is not comfortable with. It isn’t long before Dylan takes notice and not only because he want to rescue Emmy from the lurking danger but also because she calls to something within him. Can Dylan save Emmy from what is coming? Dylan will need to convince Emmy to trust him but how will Emmy react when she finds out what they are?

Then her friend takes her to some guy he tries to hug and kiss her then licks her neck, gross.. Then Dylan shows up her hero. Course Emmy didn't know that everyone was vampires including her BFF! The book was pretty good enjoyed it will have to think on the second one.,

By Al Rahming It’s rather sad and evil that there is more money in the medicine but the cure is downplayed by conglomerates as weak and ineffective. The media is controlled by these conglomerates and the promotion of pharmaceuticals are more visible than the natural remedies for both simple and in many cases, curable ailments. I feel for people in the first world countries who are convinced that the evil, as seen on TV and other media is the truth. I commend the author for putting this important work forward as a contribution to humanity. Even though most people won’t read, this book offers incredible leverage because I now, more than ever an ambassador for herbalism and natural remedies. This books covers all of the herbs from A-Z. The only challenge is finding most of them in local markets.

His father has decided that he needs some serious help and if he doesn’t get it, he will be cutting him off. Lysander knows he doesn’t have a choice and is not willing to give up his daddy’s money. So, he is off to a retreat for troubled teenagers. First stop is to his aunts, where his cousin Finn will be going along to the retreat with him. Finn and Lysander argue constantly over who’s life is worse. So, when Lysander suggests they switch lives, Finn says okay. On their way, they stop for hair cuts, change clothes, swap I’D’s, and the switch is on.When Finn and Lysander get to the retreat, he’s very surprised at the way he’s treated. It’s almost like he’s invisible. Something Lysander is really not used to. None of the kids in his group really speak to each other and there’s one who just seems to hate him on sight alone. They even get into a huge fight, that ends with them in a kitchen pantry. And no they weren’t in there looking for food. From that moment, these two strike up a friendship that turns into so much more.Between the group sessions and personal therapy, we really get to see just what kind of person Lysander truly is. You’ll see his laughter, You’ll see his heartbreak, and you’ll see him making friends. Friends that will last a lifetime.I don’t even know how to begin in telling you how much I truly loved this book. The story grabbed me right from the first page. It was filled with all kinds of different emotions. I cried sad tears, I cried happy tears, and I even laughed quite a bit. Oh, and the side characters were amazing people. I loved each one of them and became just as interested in their story as I was in Lynsander’s. I don’t want to forget to praise the writing because it was phenomenal. And I just read that this is the authors debut novel and all I have to say to her is Bravo! You did an amazing job with this story and I cannot wait to see what you come up with next.

Chilson I received a copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads5 Star | Read in one sitting | Totally engrossed |Spectacularly Broken was a spectacular read. Well-written, the narration flowed smoothly, and the situations were realistic and surprisingly deep. Lysander is a rich, gay kid with absolutely no direction in life. He's lost. The narrator was written in such a way to remove the vapid, arrogance which would have been expected, but in its place was a compassionate kid, who was realistic, and easy to understand and love.Without giving the entirety of the plot away, Lysander is sent to Naughty camp for misfit teenagers, where we meet a mishmash of broken teens who were a pleasure to read. Each and every character was unique and multifaceted.What I loved the most about the book: it took a long while for a romance to appear, as friendship, familial bonds, and the characters' issues were in the foreground. The bond between Lysander and Finn was refreshing, as was the bond between Lysander and Cai. The reader could feel the familial bonds, even from the grave.Spectacularly Broken didn't use tricks, action sequences, or excesses of romance to cover the fact that it was lacking in story, because it perfectly showcased the human condition.Very deep read, yet light-hearted with the age group and Lysander himself. I'm not one who enjoys an endearment in a book (in fact, it's my biggest pet peeve) but when he called his cousin Cupcake, I couldn't help but smile. The endearment spewing was so Lys, that I found it darling. 3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Spectacular Debut!! By Jessica *sighs in contentment* I cannot think of a more perfect way to spend a lazy afternoon. I had a pretty strong feeling that the synopsis offered by Amazon for Spectacularly Broken would ensure the book would be a good one. By the end of the first chapter, I was in love. The writing was beautiful and addicting; Lysander’s voice was fresh and dynamic, a siren pulling readers in and keeping them in a tight grip until the last word is read. And while the theme of opposites attract isn't uncommon in the romance genre, the plot of Spectacularly Broken was captivating and different, and I was compelled to keep reading until the end. Before heading off to the retreat after his father finds him in a very embarrassingly compromising position, Lsyander meets up with his cousin, Finn, who will also be attending the program. Finn is adorably likable but he resents Lysander because they two grew up in vastly different worlds; while Lysander can afford designer clothes without so much as a second glance at the price tag and spends his time partying hard, Finn and his family are literally living paycheck to paycheck and he is dealing with personal problems of his own. While Lysander is trying to convince Finn that his life isn't all it’s cracked up to be, the two decide to challenge each other to live in the other person’s shoes during therapy for as long as they can. It’s an eye opening experience for both of them, but becomes particularly tricky for Lysander when his form of tension relief becomes dangerously close to something more.Enter Cai, a super sexy badass complete with an all black wardrobe, gauged ears, and piercings from his ears to his…well…you know. ;) It’s hate at first sight between Cai and Lysander (now living as Finn and operating under the name Haze) but it isn't long before distaste becomes attraction in the form of quickies in pantry and on the roof. Both men think they've found the perfect way to absolve stress, but this is a romance, and we all know that something more is not far behind. When these two come together, it is scorching! The chemistry between them is fantastic and I loved watching their relationship grow, especially as Cai reveals more about himself. When “Haze” realizes how much contempt Cai has for Lysander and how much Cai has come to trust the person he knows as Haze, I felt anxious right along with Lysander. I wanted them to work out, but I was itching to see if and how it would. And when everything hits the fan in one explosive moment, and Lysander thinks he’s lost Cai, I felt every amount of agony going through both boys’ minds and hearts. Like I said before, this book is addicting.The secondary characters were all really great and amazingly fleshed out. The writing was perfect, and if you pay close enough attention you will catch a couple of instances of foreshadowing, which were both done brilliantly! And I loved that Holloway didn't beat us over the head with it when it was revealed, trusting the readers to be savvy about it. BRILLIANT!With this debut novel Sage Holloway has become one of my new favorite authors. I can't wait to see what she has next for us, and I hope it comes quickly! I would love a sequel for Lysander and Cai!! This is a book I highly recommend.

There was very little time to catch your breath, because there was a lot of action packed into the novella.Based on the book description, I was surprised with the direction the story took. I was not expecting the science fiction aspect, but enjoyed it.It's tough to give characters depth in so few pages, but Chateau does a nice job with the lead character. I hope in his future work we get more content and detail about supporting characters.I will definitely keep an eye out for future work from JC.

By Amazon Customer I figured much of this stuff before I purchased this book, but it DID have a few good ideas to make it worth the money. It can help a new drivers feel less alone. While it is not spelling-error free, it is personal and conversational and gives you reasonable clarity of many points. My personal Uber Driver plan for 5 Stars is: CARE and be a friendly host to everyone. Match their energy and know when to be soft/quiet too. Offer gum (in sealed blister packs for implied safety) and small bottles of water (sometimes). Have BOTH hands on the steering wheel and thank the customer for their business 1 minute before you get to their destination....and mean it! Meanwhile, I hope this author writes a Volume 2 with more detailed tips and lessons on being a an Uber Driver! :)

About the Author

Margaret Truman, the only child of President Harry Truman (33rd President of the United States), was born in Independence, Missouri and spent her early years between Missouri and Washington, DC, where her father was a senator. Upon the death of Franklin Roosevelt, Truman assumed the presidency and the young Margaret moved to the White House. From there it was on to George Washington University and a Bachelors of Arts degree in History. After college, she pursued her interest and talent in singing and from the late 1940s into the early 1950s she performed around the world, as well as on radio and television shows. Her singing career received mixed reviews, but nonetheless was followed closely by the media in her day. Truman remained in the public eye when she went on to become one of the first women to be part of the then fledgling morning news and entertainment shows, paired with Mike Wallace on NBC’s show Monitor in 1955. She began her writing career in 1956 with her first book, Souvenir, Margaret Truman's Own Story. The autobiography was followed by several works of nonfiction including books about her father, her mother, Bess Truman, and several books focusing on the history of the White House and its previous inhabitants, including former pets of White House families. In 1980, with the release of Murder in the White House, Truman began her foray into the world of fiction, which would continue for the rest of her life. Her Capital Crimes series remains popular with a whole new generation of readers who are intrigued by behind-the-scenes pictures of the political process. A prolific writer in both the fiction and nonfiction genres, Truman has written a total of thirty-five books and is today a truly popular American writer. Margaret Truman died in 2008 at the age of 83.

The Secretary of State is killed in the White House; the President appoints his inexperienced Junior Counsel to head up the investigation. There's a lot of talk, an action sequence, some more talk, another murder, some more talk, and then it all ends rather hurriedly.The book's main strength is the way it hints that bigger, darker things are at stake. But it has no real sense of urgency or structure. For example: couldn't the investigators have made a list of all people who had access to the relevant part of the White House at the relevant time, and worked through them one by one? Instead, they seem to be poking around at random. You can never tell whether or not they're really making progress. Another example: the hero didn't vote for the President, has no investigative experience, and yet is put in charge of the investigation. This could be a fascinating hook to explore the President's mixed motivations and the hero's ambition, but it too goes nowhere. The characterization throughout is fairly flat, with only the central puzzle holding the reader's attention.Oh, and... I guessed the murderer, and more or less the motive. Fun, and somewhat atmospheric just by virtue of its setting, but by no means great.

10 of 13 people found the following review helpful. Truman Makes Some Rookie Mistakes By Richard R "Murder in the White House" is the first in the otherwise good 'Murder in Washington' series. Truman hasn't yet shown her best chops. Relying mostly on her personal recollections of White House, she crafts a reasonably good story, albeit with a predictable solution. Most readers will have guessed the President's big 'secret' fifty pages before the protagonists do. The inside scoop on White House is, not surprisingly, the strongest element. The rest is sodden and a bit weak. Truman shows no knowledge at all of the State Dept, guessing that the Secretary of State has a receptionist and a telephone log, as though the Department is run like a high school principal's office. Other agency heads, the Director of the FBI, CIA, etc. seem to be go-fers. Even our hero Ron, the President's Special Counsel, fails to spark much interest. He seems to be an okay guy, but is flat and undeveloped as a character. Truman didn't do her homework for this book, and she hasn't yet developed as a solid writer - either for plot or characterization. As a first effort in a series that gets much stronger over the years, Murder in the White House is not too bad.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Just an Okay Whodunnit By Thriller Lover Margaret Truman (who passed away earlier this year) is best known as the daughter of President Harry S. Truman. But she was also a highly successful mystery author, having written over twenty "Capital Crimes" novels, i.e. murder mysteries that all take place in Washington DC.MURDER IN THE WHITE HOUSE is Truman's very first novel, published in 1980, when she was fifty-six years old. I found this novel to be mildly entertaining, but little more.The murder storyline, which involves a slain Secretary of State, was intriguing enough to hold my interest. But the characterization is flat and uninspiring, and certain plot twists simply strain credulity. The writing is solid for a first time effort, but largely flavorless. This is the type of book you read on an airplane and forget about the next day.My understanding is that Truman's books get better as they go along, so I may try one of her later efforts. But I won't be in any particular hurry to do so. MURDER IN THE WHITE HOUSE is decent enough if you're looking for a short, easy read, but there are far better novels in the genre.
