George Gibson is determined to check off the last item on his bucket list: a trip across America. He hops in his RV to visit - and sketch - the buildings and places across America that he and his wife never got to see. When his daughter learns of a young boy forced to give up a beloved Saint Bernard named Lewis, she suggests George adopt the animal as a traveling companion. The dog even fits perfectly in the sidecar of George's Vespa motor scooter. As George warms to his travel mate, he begins talking to Lewis, sharing stories from his life and his unrealized dreams. Along the way, Lewis seems to attract people and make instant friends with the quirky and charming, funny and odd people who cross their path. Could it be that his new friends - and this strange dog - will help George to finally confront the secret he's been hiding? Can Lewis's devotion to the truth be enough to save George from himself?

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Swell story By Antigone Walsh This is a story about a man with nothing to live for, a little boy who hopes to live and the dog that that helps them see the truth. George is a widower. Laden with guilt, he plans one last cross country RV trip. Alex is a sick child who has developed severe allergies to his beloved St. Bernard, Lewis. It will take a year for allergy shots to take effect so George, under pressure from his daughter, reluctantly agrees to a canine companion for his road trip. Lewis is the ultimate canine counselor. He is a great listener and loves unconditionally. Resistance is futile. This is a nice little story sure to appeal to dog lovers. The author portrays Lewis beautifully. Lewis is man's best friend, healing the hearts of his human companions. true it is fairly predictable and most of the book involves George's musings. It is gentle and heartwarming and does justice to dogs, seniors and kids.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Sometimes, listening to a dog is exactly what you need By Dogs & Horses Lewis won me over. I typically don't read faith based literature of any sort because I find most of it overbearing and the writing or plot is forgotten in the author's urge to send a message. Fortunately, Conversations with Saint Bernard doesn't fall into this trap. This is a very soft, gentle story about lost people finding themselves, finding each other, and a path through the darkness of guilt, grief, illness and emotional transition. Who else could guide them except a gentle giant of a Saint Bernard?Lewis seems to have a gift of full understanding of and the ability to communicate back to the people who need his compassion, guidance and love the most. As a life long dog lover, owner and rescuer this concept doesn't surprise me in the least - nor is it remotely out of the ordinary to think of God or Forces of Good (or whatever you want to call it) working through the pure hearts of our dogs in our care. The author handles this nicely throughout the book and gives Lewis a full personality without making him less of a dog. During a trip across the nation, we watch the bond between George and Lewis evolve as well as George's own relationship with himself evolve and that was nice. There's a selection of questions at the end to open a discussion on the book's messages for a club reading if you're so inclined. I may recommend this one to my neighbor for ladies quilting group actually. I'm glad I read this book...I put it away and hugged all six of my sweet dogs and I swear they all said "We love you too."

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Exceeds in excellence By Trudie Barreras One of the major perks of being an Amazon Vine reviewer for me has been the opportunity to become acquainted with Abingdon Press. I have found that virtually every book I have chosen from the “Christian Books and Bibles” section of “Vine for All” has been interesting, uplifting, and thoroughly enjoyable. “Conversations with Saint Bernard” by Jim Kraus, however, “exceeds in excellence”.The basic plot is of course simple and straightforward. George Gibson, still grieving the death of his wife, plans a cross-country trip as a valedictory. Alex Burden, after a precarious childhood with repeated heart surgeries, seems “on the mend” until it turns out he’s allergic to his beloved dog Lewis. Through the intervention of Providence working through George’s daughter Tess and Alex’s mother Trudy, it eventuates that Lewis becomes George’s traveling companion, but much more as well, during the time it takes for Alex to take desensitizing shots. The dog is psychic, or perhaps an angel in disguise, and serves not only to bring George in contact with several people along the way that he “needs” to meet, but also insists that he confront and deal with the truth. The story is lively, amusing while of significance relevant to the issues it resolves, and develops the “special” character of Lewis without overplaying the anthropomorphism. Other characters, as well as the under-girding theme of how prayer does (and doesn’t) work make this a story well worth reading and sharing with loved ones.

When college freshman Rowan Michaels meets gorgeous, up-and-coming rock star Adam Everest, she knows a player like him is the last thing she needs after her ex-boyfriend shattered her heart. But she can't stop thinking about the kiss they shared on his tour bus.

On the first day of school, Rowan is stunned when Adam saunters into her French class. He's soon failing miserably, and, on a whim, she offers to tutor him. But Adam doesn't recognize her as a makeup-free, glasses-clad college student—a far cry from the beautiful, mysterious "Peach" he met at his concert.

During a wild weekend on tour with the band, Rowan can't help falling for the sweet guy buried beneath Adam's rocker persona. Yet she knows she could never compete with the girls constantly throwing themselves at his feet. She'd just end up hurt … again.

Peach is all Adam thinks about, though, and when Rowan realizes this, she has a decision to make: stay just friends to protect her fragile heart … or reveal the truth about the night they met and admit she's fallen completely, hopelessly in love with him.

21 of 21 people found the following review helpful. A wonderfully delicious, sexy surprise of a read By Fiktshun Jamie Shaw’s MAYHEM is a wonderfully delicious, sexy, romantic, funny, sweet surprise of a read. In a genre packed full of steamy, angst-filled love stories it stands out from the crowd with its plot that teases and tantalizes, its female protagonist who is adorable, clever and hard-to-get, its bad-boy rocker who is completely hot but maybe not as shallow as he seems, and a supporting cast of characters that readers will want to get to know in not only this story, but future books in the series. After learning of her boyfriend’s betrayal, the last thing Rowan needs is a fling with a rock star. But resisting Adam Everest won’t be easy. He’s smokin’ hot, sexy as hell, wickedly charming and just a little bit of a white knight. And the fact that he wants her makes her wonder if putting what she needs in the long run before what she needs right now is crazy.Especially when she can’t stop obsessing over him when it turns out he’s in her French class. Or being jealous of the female entourage that follows him around campus. Or being upset that he doesn’t recognize her as the girl he met at the club.So when the opportunity arises to become his tutor, she isn’t sure why she jumps in to save him. Or why she refuses to tell him who she really is. Or why she keeps insisting that they be only friends. Maybe it’s because she has nothing to lose, as she’s pretty sure he already has her heart.Author Jamie Shaw delivers romance, humor, angst, heat, and incredibly likable characters in her story that reads like foreplay until the very end. She keeps readers on edge as they wait for Rowan’s secret to revealed and to find out what will happen when it is. And instead of packing the story full of a multitude of gratuitous sex scenes, the author develops her characters, builds the chemistry between them, and captivates with the promise of what may come.MAYHEM is a wildly entertaining, totally addictive one-sit must-read that you’ll want to read again and again. It will ensnare you from the start and won’t let go until the end. It will give you characters you’ll remember – ones to root for and at least one to despise. It will give you that gut twisty feeling. It will make you laugh and cheer and sigh and swoon. And it will make you anxious to read the next book in the series to get to know the next two characters’ love story.

16 of 16 people found the following review helpful. I want the sequel NOW! By N. H. "Mayhem" was my first experience with this genre. I thoroughly enjoyed it! I was hooked by the end of the first page. The main character Rowan has two wonderful lines: "I look like Dee’s closet drank too much and threw up on me." and "The hot-pink fabric matches my killer hot-pink heels. Literally, killer. Because I know I’m going to fall on my face and die." Those two lines told me I needed to get to know this character. And I am glad I did. I began the book just over 24 hours ago. If responsibilities as a mother and wife had not intervened, I would have read the book in one sitting. As it is, I just finished it, came up for air and realized it was snowing outside. I was totally sucked into the story. I highly recommend "Mayhem". I cannot wait for the sequels "Riot" and "Chaos". Just to clarify demographics, since I do not know if I am a typical reader of this genre or not, I am 53, thinking reading is the most important thing an individual can learn to do, and have now been opened to a whole new set of possibilities for reading choices. Thank you Ms. Shaw for writing such believable and enjoyable characters. I look forward to many, many more books from you.

14 of 14 people found the following review helpful. Loved This Book! By Book Nerd This was such a good book to me! I really really enjoyed this book and I love the way that Rowan and Adam's story was told. Yes, this is the same ole clichéd storyline of the man whore rocker that falls for the sweet innocent girl. However this is told in a totally different way, and the author didn't write Adam being an a hole to Rowan. Rowan wasn't the typical weak crybaby virginal innocent chick, she was strong. This book was perfectly written with characters that are lovable and I connected to them and was invested with them. The bond was there from me the reader to characters and that just added so much more to this book. I love how Rowan handled the Brady situation and I LOVED Dee, Rowan's best friend. Dee is the type of friend that every girl needs. She was ready and willing to go and flatten _____'s tires or burn his apartment down for cheating on ________. Like again this book was really good and I loved all the characters and I love the way that everything was written and how it all fell into place. I'm excited to go and read Dee's story and see how that turns out. In my overall opinion I say get this book because it was well worth the money and the time it took to read this book and buy this book.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Arachne the spider spins. Who is caught in the web? By S. L. Majczan This is a very very short but romantic read. I love Darcy's flirtation and his description as to the reason his mother built the maze. The book description sums up the story very nicely but upon reading you will learn why, first of all, Elizabeth is alone in the maze and, second of all, why Darcy finds her there. There are few other players in this novella. As said, Aunt and Uncle Gardiner have Elizabeth with them for their aborted tour of the Lakes shortened to visit Derbyshire and Mrs. Reynolds is, of course, on hand to give the threesome their tour of the house. This was a perfect short read for a very busy Saturday for this reader, but well worth the $.99 it cost. I was reminded of Scenes Jane Austen Never Wrote in reading this vignette. And it was just as delightful as those for me. I have read many, if not all, of the author's other works. She does not disappoint.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Very good short story Pride and Prejudice variation by Mary Lydon Simonsen!! By J & B Barrett This is a short story from my favorite author Mary Lydon Simonsen. It's a Pride and Prejudice variation that takes place when Elizabeth is visiting Pemberley. It's a quick and fun read that I think you will enjoy very much. I really like the way Mary uses a maze to bring Darcy and Elizabeth together. You will see what I mean when you read the story. It will leave you with a very good feeling for this young couple. I truly enjoyed the subtle flirtation by Darcy. Mary has done it again! I just love her work and look forward to very new story she puts out. For 99 cents you can't go wrong buying this cute short story.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. No sex but hot anyway. By Kindle Customer Anytime Darcy's conversation makes me wish I were in place of Elizabeth, I know I am reading a great P & P alternate. I could easily imagine his smoldering looks as his seemingly innocent words conveyed their double meaning to its intended target. It's short but hot! Where's my fan?

From the creators of the blockbuster film God’s Not Dead comes a novel based on their follow-up film Do You Believe?—an inspiring, heart-stirring, and faith-affirming story about how God works in the lives of those who believe. When Pastor Matthew Wesley encounters a homeless man on a city street in the middle of the night, he can't imagine the series of life-changing events that will result from that brief moment. But as the stories and desperate circumstances of several people—including a couple struggling to make ends meet, a soldier trying to rejoin society, a pregnant and homeless teenager, and an elderly couple still grieving the loss of their only child—intertwine and come together during one climactic night, they all must work together to overcome their struggles before all is lost. Evocative and moving, this sweeping narrative challenges you to confront the question: Do you really believe in the power of the cross, and if so, what are you going to do about it?

LACEY

She wasn’t supposed to still be there. The lights of the city passed her by in a blur. They no longer made Lacey happy, but then few things did anymore. Chicago used to hold such promise, but now those shimmers felt like lights on a neighbor’s Christmas tree. She could see them but she knew there were no presents for her underneath. She couldn’t even get inside to touch them. Lacey faded, then came back, then faded again. The siren in the ambulance continued to blare. She wasn’t dead, right? They had stabilized her, she thought. She didn’t know. Half of her felt like she was floating and the other half was freezing in this uncomfortable bed on wheels. She did know that her neighbor had come into her apartment at the very worst time possible. Of course, Lacey would never tell anybody else this, but you don’t usually talk about your suicide, right? Or in this case, your attempted suicide. “Dispatch, EMS Eighty-One to UC Trauma Center, hot response.” Even though Lacey had an oxygen mask covering half her face, she could see the paramedic speaking into the com link. He was a good-looking guy, dark-haired and fit and maybe possibly a little over thirty. It was nice to open her eyes and see him hovering over her. “On board is a priority-one critical Caucasian female, mid-twenties,” the man continued to report. “Experiencing acute respiratory difficulty. Airway constriction still allows for oxygen. Pushing one hundred percent at fifteen liters a minute. I’m gonna pass on the trache unless you advise me otherwise.” “Affirmative, Eighty-One,” a female voice answered. “Let’s try not to cut her if we don’t have to.” Cut her, a voice inside Lacey screamed in alarm. I would’ve done that myself if I wanted to go that route. The uncomfortable stretcher she lay on shook gently as the ambulance raced down the street. She wanted to tell the paramedic that she didn’t want them to go to all this trouble. She didn’t mean to get everybody into a panic over the allergic reaction to her dinner. She thought of Pam and already felt bad. Her poor neighbor had found her nearly unconscious, unable to breathe, on the couch with four boxes of Chinese food nearby on the glass table. She had blacked out just as Pam dialed 911. Lacey wasn’t even able to swallow that last full bite of General Tso’s chicken. The paramedic glanced down at her and smiled. “We’re almost there, okay?” he said. “You’ll be back to your old self in no time. Just keep breathing.” She nodded and tried to smile even though the mask probably hid it. My old self. Ah, the irony of his statement. It was a cliché, really. “Back to your old self in no time.” The reality was she didn’t want to go back to her old self, that she didn’t like her old self. Her old life. Her old everything. Time was all she had, but unlike that song, it wasn’t on her side. It hadn’t been for quite a while now. That song reminded her of her father. She pictured him now and felt the regret in her soul. This was followed by a snapshot of Donny, which replaced that regret with anger. Sometimes the pictures blurred, and sometimes the emotions blurred with them. Regret, anger, hurt, fear, isolation . . . There were too many, and none of them were good. The ambulance turned and started to slow down and Lacey assumed they had arrived. She couldn’t help feel a wave of disappointment. All that energy and courage it had taken to do the unthinkable. And now this. Now she was here and she would be starting over at square one. But it wouldn’t change the past twenty-five years. Nothing could change that. The only person who could change things was Lacey. That’s exactly what she had tried to do tonight. Maybe she would have to try again once she got out of there.

I have not seen the movie, but I bet it will pale in comparison to the story telling of Thrasher. He weaves the lives of all the characters around pastor Matthew Wesley's encounter with a homeless man carrying a cross. The man asks "Do you believe in the cross of Christ?" The question eventually not only affects the pastor, but a divergent group of others. I soon began to feel the lives of Joe, Elena, Lacey, Pretty Boy. Maggie and others through Thrasher's compassionate portrayals of their lives and the lives of the other characters in the story. When all of their lives merge at the climax of the story, it does so with more real action than I thought possible.

That’s become Travis Thrasher’s subtitle over the past few years, whether it’s working with other individuals to tell their story or taking a story from screen to page. Thrasher has proven to be the industry’s go-to guy on the matter, and with good reason.Thrasher has this ability to make a storyline his own in terms of style while still staying true to the collaborator’s content. This especially shows through in his novelizations. Most novelizations are stale and rote, like it was half-heartedly adapted as just another thing to put a sales tag on. You can tell that Thrasher invests himself personally in every tale he tells, even if it’s not his own originations.Do You Believe? follows multiple storylines that ultimately converge at the novel’s climax after teasing the reader throughout the movie. Because of the constant perspective shifts, it took me a while to get into the rhythm of the story and see what was happening. The premise of the story is simply this: God works in the lives of those who believe. You see that played out throughout the story: a couple struggling to make ends meet, a pregnant and homeless teen, an elderly couple grieving the loss of a child, a soldier trying to adjust to normal life, a reformed criminal, a scared criminal, and more.Released by the same people as God’s Not Dead, Do You Believe? is a strong follow-up film and novelization that shifts from the reality of God to the power of God and his presence in tough times. There’s simply so much going on in this book that it’s hard to talk about for fear of spoiling anything. In the end, the book leaves you with one question hanging in the air as a challenge: Do you believe? And more importantly, what are you going to do about it?

By SJ Do You Believe? is a powerful story of how one question will ultimately change the lives of people all over the city of Chicago, including a pregnant and homeless teenager, a couple of kids in a gang, a soldier, a suicidal woman, an elderly couple grieving the loss of their only child, a parolee, a homeless woman and her daughter, a paramedic, a nurse, a doctor, an attorney, and a pastor and his wife. The question is this: Do you believe in the cross of Christ? To Pastor Matthew Wesley, the question seems simple. He IS a pastor so of course the answer is easy, right? But the second half of the question stops him cold.So what are you going to do about it?Those simple questions spark a series of events that effect more than a dozen people throughout the city. Told in alternating viewpoints from all of these people, the author weaves a powerful story of how God works in the lives of those who believe. The viewpoint changes were hard to follow at times due to all of the characters involved, but once I got a handle on all of the players it became easy to follow. I was excited to see how the story would play out and how the author would weave all of the different character arcs together to a final conclusion. The ending did not disappoint! It was dramatic and powerful. However, for me it was very quick and tidy. There were a couple of things that needed further development and explanation. This book has been made into a major motion picture by Pure Flix and I am excited to see this book come to life on the big screen.Great book with a powerful message – I highly recommend it!
