It turns out, werewolves are aroused by everything – and allergic to polyester. Hives are the least of Leslie Kingmaker’s concerns when she enters her first trial and is transformed overnight into a wolf and the mate of pack leader Ben. Successful, brawny, overbearing and sexy, he’s as intense as he is moody and has never heard of personal space. Complete submission isn’t a sex game to him; it’s a requirement to be by his side. Heart, body, mind. They’re all his – no matter where that leaves Leslie at the end of the week. But something about the muscular alpha with a dark streak keeps her coming back, and it’s not just her duty as a Kingmaker charged with choosing the next leader of the supernatural community. Ben is dangerous and smart, a predator in every sense with the capacity for both mercy and violence – and an absolute animal in bed. Is he leadership material? Husband material? The danger her father’s final letter warns her about? The deeper Leslie dives into his life, the more complicated the alpha becomes, and the harder it is for her to remember she’s only a werewolf for a week. *** The Kingmaker code: Choose wisely – or else. One to love, one to lead, one to fear. To understand them, she must become one of them. Wolf – Fae – Vampire Three weeks, three transformations. One ultimate decision.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. one of My Favorite Series EVER!!! By Misty L. Lee I am IN LOVE with this series. I have almost every supernatural series there is out there and I am constantly on the hunt for a new series. This one did not let me down. I love a good hot steamy romance and there is plenty of that! ;-) This series keeps you on your toes and has twists and turns and I had no idea how it was going to end. I was shocked but oooh so happy with the outcome! I highly recommend this series! I bought the series about a week before leaving for a trip ( to start on the plane ) and read the whole thing in 4 days! So now I have to find another one to get before I leave haha

This book has my emotions twisted all over the place. Why must you do this to me??So. Onwards to the point. We start off with learning about a girl named Leslie (who's a graduate of Harvard, btw, but doesn't have a degree cause she skipped the graduation for a skydiving day), and bam, next thing we know, we find out that her father has been murdered. And three, hot sexy supernaturals are suspected, the very same ones who Leslie will have to choose to either a) exile b) mate or c) become the community leader. (It'll make sense.)How does this all relate, you might ask? Well, even I don't really understand how all the crazy ties together, but trust me, it does.Leslie is a Kingmaker, someone who is part of the supernatural world, yet not, and now that her father is dead, she's gonna have to make some big decisions that will affect the supernaturals themselves. The fate of many lies on her shoulders. Seriously. ( Remember the options a,b, and c? Yeah, that.)In order to do her duty as a Kingmaker and to figure out who killed her father, she has to undergo trials in which she spends a week with each of the hotties (a werewolf, a vampire, and a fae, so to speak) as a temporary mate to each. In Trial By Moon, Leslie spends her week with the werewolf Alpha Benjamin, (in which she quickly learns he walks around naked almost all the time, LOL) and grows as a character as she learns about the sexy Alpha himself, but also finding more and more facts that doesn't fit in at all to what she's been told. Leslie is challenged in a way that it is impossible to distinguish what's true and what's not, all while trying to figure out the puzzle that is Benjamin. As for how exactly this trials goes with the very possessive were, (half-blushes), wellll... You're gonna have to read it. Can't be spoiling it for you all. But I can say that finishing reading this book, (which left me in a heap of emotions, as you read from the first line), you'll want to find out what happens next. There are so many plot twists and emotion wringing scenes that I just can't wait to read the next one. And the one after that. And...well, you get the picture. Anyway, time to distract mysel- OH! DO I SPY AN ARC FOR TRIAL BY THRALL?! Well, time to run. Have fun reading the first book as I nom on on the second. Yay for ARCs!! :D

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. I felt sad. Most books end with you feeling hope or ... By Victoria Cameron As I finished the last page, I felt sad. Most books end with you feeling hope or happiness. Since this is a series that has big things happen to an emotional character, I felt like I was drifting, lost, like Leslie. I really enjoyed the premise of this story, the depth of the characters, the new world and it's confusing and antiquated rules. Most of all, I didn't want Leslie's story with Ben to end. I wanted her trials to end with him. The entire time I was wondering if she'll choose him, or will the other two present as better mates? The action, romance, and mystery are all very well done in this book. I'm about to start the next one, and can't wait to see how Tristan plays out.

23 of 26 people found the following review helpful. Full of Fake Reviews By Brad M. Author did an awesome job getting so many fake reviews almost every day. Even more than 10 reviews on certain days on this 20 page little booklet. If you click on the reviewers' names, you'll see many of them posted more than five reviews per day everyday on Amazon. They must get paid by creating fake reviews. It's amazing there so many fake reviewers out there.Quite a few reviewers even don't know what's inside the book. This booklet includes only basic information on Atkins diet. And there are no recipes, just a simple seven day meal plan. Some reviewers praised the recipes even there's none. Even one reviewer says it's a great "Cookbook."With growing number of fake reviews on Amazon, readers should be more vigilant on false reviews and more proactive on writing legitimate reviews. Amazon should remove those fake reviews.

15 of 16 people found the following review helpful. False Reviews By Joey The photo in the review by A.V. looked familiar to me. I saw that picture at blackweightlosssuccess.com. It's definitely a fake review. The reviewer copied the photo and posted a fake testimonial. That original page was posted way before this book was published.http://www.blackweightlosssuccess.com/ashley-lost-146-pounds/#.VnNtWb9KCAoI looked at other reviews too and found that most reviews are false reviews. Reviewers did not read the book and praised the book without knowing what they are reviewing. It's an insult to Amazon readers!

18 of 21 people found the following review helpful. Total Rip Off By Larry Gilbert This is just 20 pages of synopsis of the Atkins diet. It's just a pamphlet, not a book. It's nonsense that you have to pay for this kind of vague and skimpy information. I will return it for refund. You can get a lot more useful information on Atkins diet website (atkins.com) for free.

41 of 41 people found the following review helpful. It truly is Something Wonderful! By Delphina M. Clarke has done it once again! Something Wonderful is an amazing follow up to Something Great. Not only do we have we get to see how Max and Jeanella are doing, but we also get to see Max's yummy brother, Matt as struggles with and accepts his feelings for Becky. The way M. Clarke intertwined the two love stories makes for a very difficult to put down read and what made it really shine in a market with so many NA reads. We get to see how Jeanella's youthful innocence impacts her relationship in both positive and negative ways at the same time we get to see how the tragedy that forced Becky in many ways "grow up" impacted hers. Of course there is the added bonus of the two super hot Knight boys.I do not recommend reading this book without reading Something Great. You can probably catch on to the story pretty quickly, but the underlying emotions that rule their decisions and actions will be missing. I keep going back and forth on whether or not I like this one or book one better. I am going to deem it a tie. I will say that the book begins with a heart crushing scene that will leave you bawling, but I promise you it is all uphill from there.Something wonderful is sweet, hot, emotional, fun, and well written. I am very much looking forward to the next book in this series!

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. a sweeping and staggering romance that will shatter your finest daydreams By Shadowplay Just when I was sure that the extraordinary story in Something Great couldn't possibly get any better, here comes Something Wonderful rushing in behind it to completely obliterate that careless thought. I am left speechless and breathless in the wake of this sweeping and staggering romance that will shatter your finest daydreams and leave them envious of the passion and exquisiteness found within the pages of this tour de force.Becky and Jenna have been roommates since college. They have been left battered and scared from the trials that they have had to face, and yet they still yearn for what all women need - to be wanted, to be loved, and to be cherished. They find everything that they could ever need and want standing in front of them in the form of Matthew and Maxwell Knight, and yet they can't help but push them away seeing them as a mirage of the deepest longings of their heart and soul. However, these two men must learn to battle their own fears and hurts if they are to open the eyes of the women who have already claimed their hearts to the unstoppable force and passionate depth of their love and devotion for them. What begins as a whirlwind romance will end up as a no-holds-barred-I-am-in-this-for-life pursuit for their hearts. In the end, one will have to pass the ultimate test of her character while the other will have to choose whether or not to surrender her heart to a love that only appears once in a lifetime.I was utterly in awe as I watched the stunning metamorphosis of not just one but two beautiful women who deserved only the best but instead were handed its leftovers. Becky and Jenna couldn't be more different from the other, but they have come to form a strong and powerful bond of friendship over the years. It is this bond that allows them to open up and honestly help the other begin to heal and to learn that who they are is not even close to who they want to be. Through a compassionate act of fate, they are both given a glimpse of what they could have in the pure love and fierce passion that Max and Matthew Knight shower them with. Becky fights her feelings for Matthew for fear of further damage to her already fragile heart while Jenna must do what she fears the most in order to claim Max before she loses him forever.Max and Matthew have their own battles to face in this journey before they can begin to heal the women they love. They too have to decide how much they are willing to risk to keep the women they can't live without from disappearing from their lives forever. Will Matthew be able to recover his stolen heart before it's too late, or will he surrender it completely and claim Becky's at the same time? Is Max ready to watch his forever with Jenna drown in a sea of secrets, or will he conquer his demons and claim the only woman who has made him think of the future? This is one love story that will melt any heart of stone and make you see the virtue in living life feeling with your heart instead of thinking with your head. The love expressed in the pages of this book is both exhilarating and aggressive. It is not one to be taken lightly, and it is one that will stay with you for a very long time. If you ever find a love like this in your life, I advice that you hold on tight and do all that you can to never let it go. Do not allow yourself to live with the regrets of what ifs that will slowly empty your heart and cause it to grow bitter with want and need. Instead, dare to risk it all in order to claim your something wonderful.

18 of 22 people found the following review helpful. ANOTHER CLIFFHANGER!!!! By Nancy I certainly would have rated this higher had it not been a cliffhanger. THE NEXT BOOK ISN'T OUT UNTIL THE END OF AUGUST!!!! It's unfortunate because it's a good book with captivating characters. Is it not possible for an author to COMPLETE the ENTIRE book and then release it piecemeal, maybe in one month intervals? These cliffhangers seem to be the norm and, in truth, are detrimental to the flow of the story. By August, I won't remember this book nor will I care about it. There have been so many books that I've loved whose epilogues have become anticlimactic when they're finally released.......just another one to add to that list.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Decent Intro to Anxiety for Beginners By Bryan *** 3.5 STARS ***If you're reading a book on anxiety for the first time, I can see this being helpful. This book offers very basic tips and guidance on how to improve your anxiety, without the help of a trained professional. But, if you're further along in your self-improvement journey, I don't think you'll gain any new knowledge or insight on anxiety from reading this book.In the intro, I respect the author's attempt to create a good impression of what you will learn in this book. The author explains that the tips in this book are backed by scientific studies. However, none of these scientific studies are discussed or even cited throughout the book....? (there are maybe 2 discussed very briefly in total)I think readers could benefit much more, if the author included specific examples, especially in Chapter 2 when the author explains How to Apply Self-Help Treatments. Each self-treatment is only very generally and briefly explained.I'd also highly recommend that the author invest more time in proof-reading and editing the book. For example, "Stop jumping to conclusions when certainty does not play"...... Huh?

I talked with countless psychiatrists, but none could fully give me the advice that I needed. A good friend of mine encouraged me to buy this book, so I did. The book contains very good advice on how to get rid of your anxiety, and it actually worked for me! I tried some of the things and I already saw results after a couple of days. The principles which were the most effective for me were: learning to accept, stop jumping to conclusions too quick, and facing my fears.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Anxious No More! By Eva Nora Tyler I must admit, though I try to be the most positive person I know, there are still times that I feel anxious and restless. I've consulted meditations specialists, counsellors etc on how to overcome this and most of them suggested tips found in this book. The tips found in this book are very practical and how I wish I found this book sooner. What I appreciate most is the author's focus on making you aware of the reasons for your anxiety, and from there, work out possible ways to overcome it. There are also Self-Help Treatments mentioned here as well as samples of Instant Anxiety Relief Techniques. So glad I found this book. I may still feel anxious some of the time but I am confident that with the suggestions found in this book, I can be at peace more often.

Dr. Kay Scarpetta is working a suspicious death scene in Cambridge, Massachusetts when an emergency alert sounds on her phone. A video link lands in her text messages and seems to be from her computer genius niece Lucy. But how can it be? It’s clearly a surveillance film of Lucy taken almost twenty years ago.

As Scarpetta watches she begins to learn frightening secrets about her niece, whom she has loved and raised like a daughter. That film clip and then others sent soon after raise dangerous legal implications that increasingly isolate Scarpetta and leave her confused, worried, and not knowing where to turn. She doesn’t know whom she can tell—not her FBI husband Benton Wesley or her investigative partner Pete Marino. Not even Lucy.

In this new novel, Cornwell launches these unforgettable characters on an intensely psychological odyssey that includes the mysterious death of a Hollywood mogul’s daughter, aircraft wreckage on the bottom of the sea in the Bermuda Triangle, a grisly gift left in the back of a crime scene truck, and videos from the past that threaten to destroy Scarpetta’s entire world and everyone she loves. The diabolical presence behind what unfolds seems obvious—but strangely, not to the FBI. Certainly that’s the message they send when they raid Lucy’s estate and begin building a case that could send her to prison for the rest of her life.

In the latest novel in her bestselling series featuring chief medical examiner Dr. Kay Scarpetta, Cornwell will captivate readers with the shocking twists, high-wire tension, and cutting-edge forensic detail that she is famous for, proving yet again why she’s the world’s #1 bestselling crime writer.

Depraved Heart: A Scarpetta Novel (Kay Scarpetta), by Patricia Cornwell

Review “Scarpetta’s current case, Lucy’s troubles with the Feds, and Carrie’s spooky blast from the past are all on an inevitable collision course, and Cornwell shows surprising restraint in reining in her plot and keeping it tightly focused on her well-developed core characters.” (Publishers Weekly)“Dark and cleverly plotted.” (Booklist)“Another gritty, world-weary tale of mayhem by masterful mysterian Cornwell. . . . Terse and tangled, messy and body-fluidy, and altogether satisfying.” (Kirkus Reviews)“Dr. Kay Scarpetta, who keeps us coming back to Patricia Cornwell’s sprawling crime novels, is one tough broad. . . . Once Scarpetta decides to ferret out Lucy’s secrets, the novel becomes more of a psychological thriller…” (New York Times Book Review)“Heart-stopping, paranoia-fueled, propulsively readable, viscerally suspenseful, disconcertingly shifty… Cornwell’s demonic plot shifts and changes almost page by page, so the reader’s spun round not knowing what to believe… This intense rush of a mystery will keep you guessing up until the very scary conclusion.” (Providence Journal)

From the Back Cover

Dr. Kay Scarpetta is working a highly suspicious death scene in Cambridge, Massachusetts, when an emergency alert sounds on her phone. A video link seems to be from her niece Lucy. But how can it be? It’s clearly a surveillance film of Lucy taken almost twenty years ago.

As Scarpetta watches she comes to grips with frightening secrets about her niece. That first clip and others sent soon after raise dangerous implications that increasingly isolate Scarpetta and leave her confused, alarmed, and not knowing where to turn. The diabolical presence and singularly “depraved heart” behind what unfolds seems obvious—but strangely, not to the FBI. Certainly that’s the message they send when they start harassing Lucy and begin building a case that could send her to prison for the rest of her life.

In the latest novel in her bestselling series featuring medical examiner Dr. Kay Scarpetta, Cornwell captivates readers again with the jolting twists, high-wire tension, and cutting-edge forensic detail for which she is renowned, proving yet again why she is the world’s number one bestselling crime writer.

However, the past couple of books I have begun to wonder if maybe it is time for Kay to retire. I found myself dragging myself through Depraved Heart and it took me much longer to read than usual due to my lack of interest. The data fiction aspect, the "villian" that never seems to die all made it more tiresome than not. It doesn't help that Lucy becomes more unlikeable and unpleasant in each book. The "family" is super secretive and unbelievable. Even Kay has lost her luster. If you are new to the Scarpetta series I would definitely not recommend it at all. It's definitely a book that you need to know the background of the characters for. If you are a Scarpetta fan, be forewarned that it is not the Scarpetta that you are used to.

I'm sick to death of the depressing person Kay has turned into, the paranoia and once again a blast from the past intent on destroying her and her family. It's the same in every book. I really miss the early books and wish she would write one in which she's investigating just a murder. Not someone being killed and it ends up all being a plot against the great Kay. She's so depressing and stuck up in recent books would anyone mind if she was killed off? Lucy gets more unbearable with every book, Marino is just used as the idiot slob and Benton is like an android. I don't want to read about Carrie, I didn't like when she was first introduced and I have no interest in reading about her again. The whole book just comes off as grey, there's nothing likeable about any of the characters.

95 of 96 people found the following review helpful. So disappointed! By MmeEmile I've read every Scarpetta book, some more than once, but this is the last one. Depraved Heart may be the worst book I've ever read. Plodding doesn't begin to describe it. I made up my mind that I would finish it and I did, but it was a chore. I don't understand Cornwell's intent with this series, but the plots strain credulity and Kay Scarpetta has become insufferably smug and elitist. Half of this. book was about Lucy's estate and cars and original art work and the perfume Benton orders for Kay from Italy, etc. And I was VERY unhappy that the monumental cliffhanger ending of the previous book was not even mentioned!!! Goodbye, Kay, it was nice while it lasted.

14th-century Yorkshire, the time of Chaucer Peregrine, strong and beloved abbot of St. Alcuin’s monastery, suffers a stroke. Now incapacitated, he begins an arduous recovery with the help of his brothers in the infirmary. Brother Tom, the young monk closest to him, is horrified by the suffering Peregrine’s illness has inflicted. He keeps his distance, out of his depth. How will he find the courage to make this demanding journey of vulnerability with his friend? How will they communicate, now that Peregrine can no longer speak? How will Tom respond to the terrible, secret promise his abbot asks him to make? In this journey to the depths of humanity, the two men discover together the treasures of darkness and the intimate mystery of compassion. Engaging and beautifully written, warm and haunting, The Long Fall concludes the first trilogy in the Hawk and the Dove series.

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. A stirring look into how we face death and dying By A Customer This third book in Wilcock's series about life in a monastary is deeply moving. The story revolves around Father Peregrine and his relationship with Brother Thomas, his aide. It is an incredibly poignant portrayal of the struggle to cope with the degenerating physical and mental capacities of one we love deeply.Brother Thomas wrestles with God and his own faith as he watches his mentor and friend, once graceful, articulate, and impressive, disintegrate into an embarassing lump of humanity, stripped of dignity.Wilcock's ability to articulate the spiritual struggles of both men is unmatched, drawing the reader into the heart-wrenching questions we all ponder but are too afraid to face. This three part series is the BEST fiction I have ever read. It stirred me as deeply as Tozer and Spurgeon, but in the exciting form of a story I couldn't put down.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Long Fall is a Deep Call By Mary Blyth Jones This novel is an extraordinary combination of story and theological treasure. Wilock leads the reader through the simplistic yet detailed life of a monastic monk in some time prior to contemporary times. She carefully explains the reasons for ritualistic and demanding life of the monastic community, and the relationships of brothers who all have unique callings in the community. Ms. Wilock offers morsels of tremendous depth woven seamlessly into the story. Her thought and writing of these segments are as sharply focused as C.S. Lewis. The author deals with the difficult subjects of illness, suffering, inescapable death, suicide, and euthenasia... just to name a few! An excellent read, and thought provoking for weeks to come.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A Crumb of Hope By Anne Rightler The Long Fall, third in The Hawk and The Dove series, is an amazing story of friendship, faith, and fealty. The present-day framework (a mother passing down long ago tales to her daughter) of the first two books is no longer used in this book. The Long Fall also differs from the first two as it recounts the tale of Brother Thomas and Father Peregrine's relationship rather than a series of stories about various brothers in the monastery. The author, Penelope Wilcock, has given an interesting background of a medieval monastery as she tells of the apparent stroke of Father Peregrine and the ensuing reactions of Brother Thomas. In this story of illness and rehabilitation, and then ultimately death, there is an extraordinary portrayal of realistic human emotions--angst and anger, at self and at God, devastation and despair, horror and hope and ultimately sadness and sorrow. Wilcock's characterization of the caregivers at the infirmary is emotionally realistic. Being in the medical field myself, as I read the passages dealing with the physical care of the incontinent, confused and senile brothers, I just hoped the care I gave over the years to patients in my care was as compassionate and caring as that portrayed by the author. The story dealt with a number of issues of the vulnerability of man, i.e., paralysis, dysphasia, euthanasia, and death in a very thought provoking manner. ""He's your friend, he's sick, he needs you." (pg. 76) "'Dying is a tedious business.' You sound as though you're talking about the weather." (pg. 130-1) Father Peregrine, despite his halting voice and infirm body, continues his mentor role to Thomas, his former aide, as he struggles to make Thomas see the humanity is not flesh and blood but the breath of God in man and as such human life is sacred. An absolutely amazing book of gentleness and kindness and compassion.I received a copy of this book through The Book Club Network (bookfun.org) in exchange for my honest review. I have posted reviews on Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Deepershopping.com, Christianbook.com, Bookfun.org, Booksamillion.com, and GoodReads.

Emmaline Nelson and her sister Birdie grow up in the hard, cold rural Lutheran world of strict parents, strict milking times, and strict morals. Marriage is preordained, the groom practically predestined. Though it's 1958, southern Minnesota did not see changing roles for women on the horizon. Caught in a time bubble between a world war and the ferment of the 1960's, Emmy doesn't see that she has any say in her life, any choices at all. Only when Emmy's fiancé shows his true colors and forces himself on her does she find the courage to act―falling instead for a forbidden Catholic boy, a boy whose family seems warm and encouraging after the sere Nelson farm life. Not only moving to town and breaking free from her engagement but getting a job on the local newspaper begins to open Emmy's eyes. She discovers that the KKK is not only active in the Midwest but that her family is involved, and her sense of the firm rules she grew up under―and their effect―changes completely. Amy Scheibe's A FIREPROOF HOME FOR THE BRIDE has the charm of detail that will drop readers into its time and place: the home economics class lecture on cuts of meat, the group date to the diner, the small-town movie theater popcorn for a penny. It also has a love story―the wrong love giving way to the right―and most of all the pull of a great main character whose self-discovery sweeps the plot forward.

A Fireproof Home for the Bride: A Novel, by Amy Scheibe

Review

“Scheibe's multilayered plot feels organic: the strands are knitted into a tight story of substance that touches on the politics of race, class, and gender... the book is spectacular.” ―Publisher's Weekly, starred review and "Pick of the Week"

“An engrossing tale of intrigue, deceit and racial unrest in the upper Midwest in the 1950s, A Fireproof Home for the Bride is a fresh take on a pivotal moment in American history.” ―Christina Baker Kline, #1 bestselling author of Orphan Train

“A strong-willed farmer's daughter comes of age in the Minnesota sugar beet fields, where romance fuels her dreams, but dark secrets threaten to upend them. Emmy Nelson's eager pursuit of a life beyond the confines of her narrow 1950s upbringing leads her into danger--and her courage exposes decades of corrupt piety and shocking evil. A Fireproof Home for the Bride fascinates with its postwar period detail, and bravely travels to corners of the heartland where everyone has secrets, and wholesomeness is not as it appears. ” ―Kate Manning, author of My Notorious Life

“A Fireproof Home for the Bride is an engrossing, quietly profound story of a young woman's coming of age in the deceptively bucolic Upper Midwest of the 1950s. Its nuanced, utterly real characters and tantalizing revelation of secrets will keep readers turning the pages.” ―Jennifer Chiaverini, author of Mrs. Lincoln's Dressmaker

“Set in the shifting landscape of North Dakota at the end of the 1950s, A Fireproof Home for the Bride is a subtle coming of age story, as well as a remarkable portrait of racism's sinister hold on rural America. Emmaline Nelson is a wonderful heroine: a fierce, smart, independent woman you'll be cheering for long after the novel is over. ” ―Haven Kimmel, New York Times Bestselling Author of A Girl Named Zippy

“Profound...[Scheibe] quietly tells a beautiful coming-of-age story in the less-than-idyllic 1950s upper Midwest.” ―RT Book Reviews, RT Book Reviews

“Fans of Kathryn Stockett will identify strongly with the agonizing choices Emmy must make as ugly family secrets concerning racial hatred emerge.” ―Library Journal, Library Journal

“The future for Emmaline Nelson is preordained: life on her family's farm in Minnesota with a man her parents have chosen. But when she uncovers the true character of her fiancé-and a shameful family secret-she decides that only she has the power to determine her fate.” ―All You Magazine #1 Way to Treat Yourself

“The novel's careful pacing slowly builds upon...the dark undercurrent of racism and bigotrysaturating the community, lending an atmosphere of dread to even everyday occurrences. Scheibe devotesthe same attentiveness to Emmy's growth, as Emmy painstakingly develops the confidence to stand up forherself and for what she believes is right.” ―Booklist, Booklist

“Emmy's growing maturity is well-portrayed ...A good coming-of-age story.” ―Kirkus

“This is the book that'll remind you to what feels right to you...Even though [Emmy's] increasingly bold steps away from her old life take her only as far as Fargo, you'll cheer for how far she's really gone.” ―RedBook Magazine

“This is a profound novel that quietly tells a beautiful coming-of-age story in the less-than-idyllic 1950's upper Midwest. The characters have a realness to them that is in some ways raw, but also utterly fascinating. They continue revealing the kind of secrets that keep the reader thoroughly engrossed in the novel.” ―RT Book Reviews

“Set at the dawn of the civil rights movement, Scheibe's tale captures both the heartache and the liberation of finding one's own path.” ―PEOPLE's "Pick of the Week"

“Amy Scheibe spins an ambitious tale of feminism, racial tension and murder set in the Red River Valley in 1958...Filled with rich regional detail.” ―Grand Folks Herald

“A real page-turner...The book is sure to generate many cafe discussions and it begs a sequel to answer questions about some of the characters the reader comes to know well.” ―Bismarck Tribune

“Scheibe gives it an interesting turn and lays out for readers a nice feel for Midwestern politics and values on the 1950s.” ―St. Louis Post Dispatch

By SundayAtDusk In the beginning, this novel was an incredibly well-written coming-of-age story about a teenager during the late 1950s who had to decide what she really wanted in life. This was not easy for Emmy since she was kept on a very short leash by her hardworking, religious parents, particularly her mother. Author Amy Scheibe did such a good job describing Emmy's life, her family, her friends, her desire to be young and free but still responsible and caring. Times were changing, the songs on the radio were changing, the expectations of young women were changing. At some point in the book, this wonderful story also changes, and not in a good way, in my opinion. It basically becomes a murder mystery story. Emmy's reaction, or lack of reaction, to certain things, such as her sister's marriage, definitely started seeming more fitting for a murder mystery novel than a sensitive coming-of-age novel. (I don't read or like murder mystery books.) Also, although Emmy is an extremely energetic 18-year-old who gets a lot done in a day, she is so often exhausted and emotionally fatigued, and the reader has to keep reading about that matter. Interestingly, I started feeling the same way as the story progressed.Hence, I personally think Ms. Scheibe should have written a shorter story, leaving out the fires and crimes, especially that final killing. There were plenty of family mysteries, without needing to create criminal type mysteries. A book about the roles and feelings of women in the 1950s would have been enough. Throwing in stories about the KKK and discrimination against Mexicans, Jews and blacks was too much. The author should have saved those stories for another book. Nevertheless, I will always remember certain characters and parts of this story.

By PattyLouise a fireproof home for the bridebyamy scheibeThe main and most important characters in this book...This book revolved around Emmaline Nelson...Emmy...and her family, friends, and neighbors. The time frame for this book was the mid 1950's and the location...the setting...for this book was Southern Minnesota. My very brief story summary that includes bits and bobs from the beginning, middle and end of this book...Emmy lived within the boundaries of a very strict church going Lutheran family. Her mother seemed cold and frugal with her husband...Christian...her daughters and her life. Actually she was frugal with everything. My impression was that Emmy was lost in a black and white austerely cold environment. Food without flavor, clothes without color and a life without fulfillment. She was betrothed to a neighbor...Ambrose...and headed for a life similar to her mother's...and then...she gets the courage to leave her home and stop allowing others...especially the creepy/controlling Ambrose...to influence her.My actual most favorite part of this book...My favorite part of this book was the slow awakening of Emmy. She carefully began to question everything. She finds out about a wonderful aunt that she has never even known about. She breaks off her betrothal...she begins to work at a newspaper, she makes a red checked colorful gingham skirt...she hangs out with Catholics, she dances, she begins to live! I write this casually but for Emmy to escape this life...was absolutely a powerful thing. Her father...though quiet...always seemed to be silently approving of her choices. Then there is the dark side of this book...the Ku Klux Klan part...I had no idea that this was a part of this part of the country...there was an evil in some of these people...mostly men who professed to be good church going men. These men...one in particular...had hidden sexual perversions and depravities for years. That and cross burnings and burning businesses owned by anyone they perceived to be "different"...that was the dark side...we could probably add fiancé abusing, wife mistreatment and rape to the list of dark things, too.My actual true feelings about this book and whether or not other potential readers will enjoy it...I loved this book...it was filled with family issues...and relationships that were tangled as well as complex. Emmy is the star of this book. It was enthralling to watch her grow. I cheered for every step she took that led her to her own personal independence...she followed her inner voice and it usually took her in the direction she should be heading in.There was danger and mystery and a ton of people who needed to wake up in this book...especially Emmy's mother and sister. Readers who love this kind of family saga...should love this book!

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Scheibe does a wonderful job solidly creating characters that will either tear at ... By Gini Rainey I received an advanced reader's copy of this book and want you to know that I have marked "Bride" as another book I was unable to put down. This is Scheibe’s second book, the first being “What Do You Do All Day” and I found it to be a very interesting book about the coming of age during the mid-50s in the mid-west. Filled with enough romance, intrigue, and racial prejudices, it’s a book that will appeal to readers of all types of literature.Centered around the life of main character, Emmeline, Scheibe does a wonderful job solidly creating characters that will either tear at your heart or fill you with anger. This book is full of so many raw emotions it will leave you feeling the joy, pain, and anger of the characters. In a time and space where one wouldn’t imagine arranged marriages, racial injustices, and social prejudices still existed, the characters of “Bride” find their lives ruled by the social mores of the day.Although not an arranged marriage of the traditional sort, Emmeline’s family basically assumed that she would marry Ambrose when the time was right, thus merging the land holdings of both families into a much larger farm that would provide a more influential presence in the community. However, because of the expectations and pressures of their families and a desire to know more about life before becoming committed to just one person, 18 year old Emmy breaks off her engagement with Ambrose and moves out of the family home.On her own, she discovers family members and their histories and unpleasant facts about Klan activity in the community, but most importantly, she discovers herself and what she is truly capable of doing. At a time when women were expected to get married and have children, Emmy finds her true calling in investigative reporting for the local newspaper. With the help of one of the reporters, she is able to uncover and expose the activities of some of the seamier residents of the community. In a book that is as interesting to read as it is compelling, Scheibe has boldly hit on subjects often thought of as taboo and off-limits for people of the 50s, where such things didn’t exist (really?) or, if they did, certainly weren’t talked about. In my opinion, this book is well worth the read.

When I was fourteen years old, I killed for the first time. That day I learned cruelty wasn’t only within the walls we had just escaped. It hasn’t been easy growing up in the middle of a war. By Brie, Cheeky Chicks Blogger Collision: the act of colliding...Evie Harper takes you on a ride where hidden truths are revealed, and family secrets exposed as we drift through this alternative world she has created full of street thugs, fast cars and brutal beatings. This is a ride through the harsh streets of Portland where potholes, twists and turns exist on every road.Slater. In the prologue you see him as child full of raw emotions. Skip to Chapter One and you see him as the man he has become. He is the King, the oldest of his siblings and he's hardcore. Growing up on the streets, being tough was his only option in order to protect his family. And he will go to any lengths to do just that. With the constant battle between an old friend and his gang, Slater has his hands more than full and isn't looking for anything more than a night. Especially with his loss that hangs over his head and clouds his heart while haunting his soul. But for Slate, one night turns into another night and before he knows it, he's in deep.Piper. This woman is strong and her strength throughout this novel did not go unnoticed. Even though she was vulnerable at times, she could be just as feisty and sassy. She didn't hold back any punches when it came to Slater and always let him know what was on her mind instead of going back and forth in her head about it. Add in the fact that you can see her come into her own from the very first chapter you meet her to the epilogue and I couldn't help but fall for her as well!Together, these two take you on an unforgettable ride full of sensuality, suspense, acceptance, love and vulnerability. With Slater's vulgar mouth and Piper's wanton ways, you are sure to be left feeling more than promiscuous as you feel the full impact of Collision.

Its a gangbanger romance. (At least I think that's a trope now.) Obviously, being gang members, the men are all tattooed bad boys. There was lots of drama, a good amount of action, and a really good plot twist. All good things for fans of these types of books. That being said, while being a good enough read, the story did not resonate with me. It was lacking a level of maturity that I would expect from 30 y/o characters. I thought, based on the super emotional and engaging prologue, that this book would get under my skin. But we go right from the prologue to raunchy sex in the bathroom of the bar, where the girl is holding on to the nasty toilet seat. At one point she even rests her head on her arms on the toilet seat. This grossed me out so much that the story started to unravel. I mean, ew, public toilet seat in a bar??? And you know public toilets dont have lids - so she was up close and personal with some nasty bodily fluids and lots of germs. I wanted to shower just reading it. And it was repeated every night for the next 3 weeks! No thank you. Why couldn't they just do it against the wall? Another thing... most of the sex was doggystyle. I prefer variety in my smut, otherwise I'm just gonna skim those parts.I think this book may appeal to a younger crowd, but I wouldn't be surprised if the over-30 age group aren't satisfied. 3 stars / 3 flames. I was provided a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

It's got romance, suspense, action, surprises and a whole cast of great characters. I'm looking forward to learning more about each of them.Slater was fourteen years old when he helped the other foster kids at the home they were living escape after discovering the foster dad had killed the youngest girl, Mia. They grew up and lived on the streets and are now feared and respected as the Portland Street Kings. They may not be family by blood, but they are family in the ways that matter and would die for one another. They protect their city and neighborhood and offer help to kids, families and businesses who need it. They're not above breaking the law, but they are fair and under their rough exteriors are really great guys. Slater meets Piper one night at a bar after he kicks a dude's a$$ who makes fun of her for stuttering. There's something electric between he and Piper. They don't make plans to see each other again, buy neither can stay away. After weeks of meeting up at the bar, they finally make plans to officially go on a date. Only Slater discovers Piper works for Child Protective Services...the very people who left he and his family with that terrible foster man. Slater struggles with his feelings for Piper and the fact that what she does for a living is something he resents and hates. But when he finds out that a rival street gang knows how important Piper is to him, and are planning on going after her, it's not a hard decision to make to protect her. This book was so different from others I've read. I was wrapped up in this story from the very beginning and read it straight through without stopping. I loved Slater immediately. He's possessive, rude and overwhelmingly - and the minute he starts that sexy talk, I melted right alongside Piper. Dang the man could string words together. Piper is a strong and caring character and the perfect match for Slater. She doesn't back down from him, and when she learns the reason he tries to make himself hate her, she's more determined to show him she's different from other CPS officers. There are a number of twists and oh s!?t moments that will keep you on the edge of your seat waiting to see what happens next. I loved every bit of this first in the series and I'm gonna have to find me some more books by this author to read until Mack's book is released next.

From Edgar Award-winning and New York Times bestselling author Andrew Klavan, a supernatural thriller about a good cop in the grips of an evil curse. In the tradition of Dexter and The Shield, the first in a riveting trilogy about a crime-fighter on a quest to control the beast within.

Zach Adams is one of the best detectives in the country. Nicknamed Cowboy, he’s a soft-spoken homicide detective from Houston known for his integrity and courage under fire. He serves on a federal task force that has a single mission: to hunt down Dominic Abend, a European gangster who has taken over the American underworld. After a brutal murder gives them a lead, Zach and his tough guy NYPD partner Martin Goulart feel like they’re finally on Abend’s trail. But things get complicated―and very, very weird. Goulart’s on-the-job enemies are accusing him of corruption. And Zach is beginning to suspect that Abend’s evil goes beyond crime―perhaps to the edge of the supernatural. As his investigation continues in Germany, Zach finds himself lured into the impossible. In a centuries-old forest under a full moon, a beast assaults him, cursing him forever. In the aftermath, Zach is transformed into something horrible―something deadly. Now, the good cop has innocent blood on his hands. He has killed―and he will kill again―in the form of a beast who can’t be controlled or stopped. Before he can free himself, he’s going to have to solve the greatest mystery of all: How can you defeat evil when the evil is inside you?

Werewolf Cop: A Novel, by Andrew Klavan

Review “The most original American novelist of crime and suspense since Cornell Woolrich.” (Stephen King)“Horrific, hallucinatory, haunting and harrowing. Such a suspenseful yarn I couldn’t put it down, mesmerized, horrified and actually frightened. So taut and tense, and Klavan grounds the supernatural goings-on so carefully in a cop’s investigations. This horror story is awesome.” (Providence Journal)“Werewolf Cop is a fun and gripping read that is much more classic police procedural than campy horror. The end result is the most unique novel Andrew Klavan has penned to date.” (Bookreporter)“Be warned: this book is loaded with provocations. The French have Michel Houellebecq; here in the US of A, we have Andrew Klavan. Werewolf Cop is his best book yet, one that starts with a rush and never lets up, dark and funny, with the bittersweet taste of the knowledge of good and evil.” (Books and Culture)“A fast-paced page-turner that delivers all the gory thrills its title promises.” (BookPage)“Don’t start this novel when you have only a few minutes at your disposal. Once you get into it, you are going to want to hunker down and read. Dark, violent, funny, and compulsively readable.” (Books & Culture's John Wilson for 'Christianity Today')“Werewolf Cop is a modern masterpiece of hardboiled horror, featuring a hero who feels like he stepped out of a Raymond Chandler novel as he confronts a dilemma that recalls the best of Stephen King―and the whole thing set to a moral sensibility that has become too rare in literature.” (John J. Miller, author of 'The First Assassin')“Be warned: this book is loaded with provocations. The French have Michel Houellebecq; here in the US of A, we have Andrew Klavan. Werewolf Cop is his best book yet, one that starts with a rush and never lets up, dark and funny, with the bittersweet taste of the knowledge of good and evil.” (Books and Culture)“Though the title might suggest more lighthearted fare, make no mistake, this is a gritty crime novel at heart. Klavan is a suspense expert, building slowly through the first half of the book and then setting a rapid, tense pace for the second. And for all of that, Klavan also infuses the text with a plentiful wry humor.” (Foreword Reviews)“Multiple Edgar Award winner Klavan explor[es] the extreme thoughts and emotions his protagonist experiences. Fans of contemporary monster tales will be taken with Klavan's thriller.” (Kirkus Reviews)“Klavan winds his tale tighter and tighter until the reader is hopelessly spellbound. Superb suspense by a master storyteller.” (Clive Cussler)“A horror novel crossed with the detective genre―more something you'd expect from John Connelly, say, than Patricia Briggs. Unlike many werewolf novels I've read, nothing in this novel feels like foreplay to the inevitable because there's already so much going on in Adams's life. It reads like the real deal, utilizing powerful elements from different kinds of storytelling because they're needed and using them to create something that we haven't really seen before.” (Fantasy and Science Fiction)“A great read. It’s a slickly written, character driven crime/horror hybrid thriller that pushes all the right buttons. One hell of a ride.” (LitReactor)“There’s gore galore, quite cinematic in execution. While the visual imagery is potent, Klavan doesn’t neglect fleshing out his characters, lending a sense of verisimilitude to the supernatural elements of the story.” (Diaboloique Magazine)“Klavan has a knack for creating relentless, fast-paced narratives, and this thriller-horror hybrid is no exception.” (Booklist)“Werewolf Cop grabs the reader by the throat and doesn’t let go until the very end. The writing is crisp and descriptive. Straight-arrow Zach Adams has his flaws and moments of doubt. The other characters are also fully-rounded. This good read will send shivers up your spine.” (AuthorLink.com)“The two Edgars Klavan owns testify to his excellence at thrillers.” (Publishers Weekly)“A horror novel crossed with the detective genre―more something you'd expect from John Connelly, say, than Patricia Briggs. Unlike many werewolf novels I've read, nothing in this novel feels like foreplay to the inevitable because there's already so much going on in Adams's life. It reads like the real deal, utilizing powerful elements from different kinds of storytelling because they're needed and using them to create something that we haven't really seen before.” (Fantasy and Science Fiction)“Andrew Klavan's werewolf tale bounds along at a thrilling pace. Cinematic, rich description of setting and action.” (Winnipeg Free Press)“Klavan’s characters are finely etched, lending verisimilitude to the supernatural elements of the story.” (Mystery Scene Magazine)

Can't wait for the sequel By Hunter Wolk I work in publishing and found this book through the PW review, which doesn’t quite know what to make of it. In fact, after finishing and loving it, I still am not sure what to make of it. If you’re like me, you probably don’t have much experience with gory-yet-nuanced, action-packed, teleological thrillers. About a werewolf.A week later, I can’t get this story out of my head. That it refuses to allow itself to be categorized speaks to its wild effectiveness. I still don’t quite know what to make of it, and I can’t wait for the sequel.

By Karen Jones Before I rave about Werewolf Cop I need to disclose I was already an Andrew Klavan fan before reading this book. That said, I did not begin the book when it arrived because I'm not allured by monsters or magic when making a reading selection. I feared a story about a cop who transforms into a werewolf might require too much suspension of reason for me too enjoy the book. Monsters are for kids. Klavan's noir detective work, especially the Shotgun Alley characters Weiss and Bishop, are what originionally attracted me to his work. I like my lead characters cynical and depressed, cracking wise. But I do enjoy the humorous self-aware style of Klavan's writing, even when reading his Young Adult novels, so I decided to give Werewolf Cop a try. I started reading last night and discovered I could not put the book down. I should not have been discouraged by the Werewolf story line because like all good monster stories, Werewolf Cop is a book about the battle between good and evil. I started this book thinking about Warren Zevon's Werewolves of London but the tune soon changed to Sympathy For the Devil because just like in the Rolling Stones song, evil in Werewolf Cop likes to travel through time. Without spoiling the ending, you can trust me here, the suspense builds with each turn of the page. No matter your pro-werewolf or anti- werewolf bias, this book will appeal to anyone who enjoys a suspenseful drama, a crime novel or just a good clarification of their personal values. Werewolf Cop was a fulfilling read on multiple levels.

Piercing depth, "dreamlike logic," and mesmerizing narrative By Aaron Kaplan The piercing depth of this novel surprised me far more than it ought to have considering Andrew Klavan's many other worthy titles. That's not to say that "Werewolf Cop" doesn't pack all of the punch that the title and genre suggest--it does--but it delves further into character than any thriller I've come across. Deeply compelling moral and ethical themes permeate the novel and held my interest as much as the gripping and stampeding storyline. The Publishers Weekly review convinced me to buy: "The narrative proceeds with a dreamlike logic to a satisfying and action-filled conclusion." I can firmly conclude that "dreamlike logic" is an understatement of the elegance and grace underlying the storyline.I've read most of Klavan's other novels and seen a few of the movies. This is far and away his best. Whether you're looking for a penetrating work of fiction that reflects on the enduring questions or just a good, old-fashioned werewolf story, "Werewolf Cop" is a must-read.

Her brother Angus is supposed to help her with the farm the parents deeded to both of them. Instead, he gambles and drinks as these are his running around years. One morning Libby wakes up to Brook, an Englisher at her front door.

A Clean Read By Amazon Customer What would be worse than being a widow, expecting a baby and trying to run her farm alone?Libby Wagler was soon to find out. Libby wished for nothing more than her brother's return from rumspringa.Brock Harding won half a farm in a poker game. What will he do when he visits the farm to be faced with an angry Amish woman?Libby wants nothing more than for the man who cheated her brother to get off her farm. However, with the farm failing, could a bad mannered, rough looking cowboy be Libby's answer to prayer? The unusual plot got my attention right away and of course the really cute picture on the cover did too. The story ended up being different than I even expected because of the hidden things in Brock's past. There were plenty of twists and turns about who he really was. and what he had been through.Libby had her fair share of men who just weren't there for her no matter what they had promised. She's overworked, discouraged, pregnant and doing everything she can to save the farm for her baby's sake. She is totally convinced that Brock has cheated her brother so that he could get her brother's share of the farm. She fights against him, not even allowing him into her house because at least that is hers. And its something she doesn't have to share with an outsider, and worst of all a gambler. Brock shows Libby unexpected kindness at times and that confuses her even more. He does his share of work but mysteriously disappears anytime someone from the Amish community shows up. What is with that? You have to read the book to find out, of course.
