Dreams of My Mothers is based on the true story of two mothers' transcendent love for the same boy. It is a love that reaches across the globe, propels them and him on a riveting and unimaginable path of transformation and triumph. It is a story that will speak to everyone who reads it; a story that tells us that love alone is not enough. Transcendent love is exceptionally rare, requiring sacrifice beyond normal boundaries, a faith beyond all doubts, and most of all, the courage to dream beyond all hope. Author Joel L. A. Peterson gives us a vivid and gripping story of a biracial, impoverished boy who, through the love and courage of his mothers, overcomes questions of identity, race, physical handicaps and prejudice to become a new American success story. It touches on all the issues of who we are--as a people, as a nation, and as individuals. Dreams of My Mothers is a story particular to a few, but relevant to all. It is American, yet global. It is a story that feels intensely personal, yet universal in its themes and humanness. And the triumphs are real.

Review "Compelling, candid, exceptionally well written, "Dreams Of My Mothers" is a powerful read that will linger in the mind and memory long after it is finished and set back upon the shelf. Very highly recommended." - Reviewer's Choice Selection, Midwest Book Review "It's an irresistibly compelling story."- Barbara Payne, Examiner.com

From the Author I wrote my novel, Dreams of My Mothers, because I have been privileged to bear witness to some very unique circumstances and experiences, at extreme ends of the human condition and at the margins of the American saga. I wanted to share some of these in a way that truly brings the reader inside each experience and each moment as if they were the character going through it.But, at a time when our society seems to be struggling to find a shared identity - with race, culture, and what it means to be American - I also wrote the book because it reveals deep, unique insight, adding to the social discourse through a topic - multiracialism within transnational and transracial adoption - that rarely gets much attention from any quarter, because it represents such a niche subset of our society, yet contains within it all the most relevant, timeless, and deeply felt - and held - human themes, passions, values, insecurities, tragedies, and judgments...and loves.

From the Inside Flap It's 1967 in the country of South Korea. A four-year-old boy is terrified when he witnesses his mother's apparent death.   The boy believes her death as final and certain truth.  He believes that there is now no one to protect him, no one to love him; that he is all on his own. He is filled with a mindless terror and loneliness beyond comprehension, and he begins to cry and shake uncontrollably; a wailing, desperate cry of anguish and fear from a little boy who believes that his mother just died.   And that he is alone forever.   But this is not the end of the story; nor its beginning. The story begins in 1963 in a devastated South Korea, barely recovering from a brutal civil war, with a young, destitute peasant woman struggling to raise her illegitimate infant, the son of an American serviceman. She abuses alcohol to escape her pain, the abandonment by her son's father, and the shame of her poverty-driven prostitution. One day, her infant son nearly dies from a stupid, horrific accident. Now not only fatherless, poor, and foreign, her son is crippled and disfigured--mother and son all the more ostracized and without a future.   In America, on the other side of the globe, a different young mother gives birth prematurely to a son, with tragic results, leaving her heart and her faith shattered--and questioning all her beliefs. Years later, she is still silently struggling with her pain and anger at her God--until she reads an appeal in a magazine for those who may have love enough to help save children who are without a future and without hope.  In the tragedies of two mothers from the opposite ends of the world is born a dream and a destiny.

Because I am a business owner who works long hours, I really don't have much time to donate to leisure reading. When I do pick up a book, it usually takes me a few weeks to finish it. However, with Dreams Of My Mothers I just could not put it down. I read this book in four days (which is a first for me). I was on a great journey so I didn't want to stop reading. I found myself laughing out loud, tearing up, feeling sympathy and anger at the same time. I loved the way Mr. Peterson would enlighten us with tidbits of information that he would interject which I found very interesting and a relief from the emotional rollercoaster I was on. Mr. Peterson's writing was skillful and cleaver, leaving me at the edge of my seat at the end of each chapter. The ending of Dreams Of My Mothers was quite beautiful to say the least. I do hope that Mr. Peterson writes another. He is a gifted writer! Now a couple of my friends are reading this novel because I couldn't keep this gem to myself.

Simply Stunning By Amy Steinhauser Dreams of My Mothers is absolutely captivating, a novel based on true events from the life stories of both of the author’s birth and adoptive mothers, deftly interwoven with events from his own. Exquisitely, often painfully, highlighting the joyful as well as the tortured moments of their individual journeys of searing loss, exceptional love and ultimate redemption, the book’s story travels along the boundaries where all our narratives meet, and completely drew me into places I could not possibly have imagined. Once begun, I simply could not put it down.I am uniquely blessed to have known the author during some of the time and events on which the book is based. His sister, he, and I were in high school classes together, and my father was faculty at Gustavus Adolphus College with his father. Joel and I reconnected several years ago via Facebook, and when he asked me to proofread the book’s manuscript, I was delighted to do so. I am a professional proofreader, well-read and exposed to a wide range of writers and styles.Joel’s writing is simply stunning. The story itself is singular and unique, and the way he tells it is suspenseful and engrossing. Dreams of My Mothers will be a book that you will want to own and re-read, and its story and themes will stay with you, long after you have turned the final page.

He and his Mother lived in a one room hovel of a home, his Dad having left when his Mom was eight months pregnant. Lee Young never knew his father, who was Irish. Lee Young Nam's mother, Lee Hee Ae was extremely poor, unemployed and had no family to support her. The government did not support children of unwed mothers.Lee Hee Ae took to prostuition, drinking and bartering in the city. For days, the two of them were without food, water heat, and had only the clothes on their backs. Lee YoungNam was left alone in the one room they shared while his mother went out searching for food, cigarettes, and alcohol.Lee Hee Ae realized she could not provide for her son. Heartbroken that she needed to make a decision to place Lee Hee Young up for adoption, she knew it would be the best for him. They had a very upsetting separation adoption with promises to re-unite when Lee Hee Young was older. His Mom gave him a pendant with her name, and his Korean name. This he used and later in his his life, used it to locate his Mother.Lee Hee Young's adoptive family lived in Minnesota. His American family consisted of parents and their four children. Life was very different for hi in his loving family. He flourished and was very successful in school. However, he grew up always trying to explain his place in the world as he felt that people openly shunned him.Very fast paced, informational facts of the Korean culture, and a heartwarming end.A story I will always remember!
