A multi-generational story about the power of secrets and the unbreakable bonds of family. A Long Thaw is about two female cousins who were close as children and reconnect as adults. Abby and Juliet were born into one big, close, Catholic family. But the divorce of Juliet’s parents fragments this family and sends the girls in very different directions. Juliet grows up too quickly, on the west coast, forced to be responsible for her younger sisters as well as an alcoholic, single mother. On the east coast, Abby grows up a pampered, sheltered only child. As women, they try to mend the rift and come to terms with the way their shared history connects them in spite of the years apart. This book has been published traditionally and I'm rereleasing it on my own.

A Long Thaw, by Katie O'Rourke

Review Compulsively readable. - The Book StopO'Rourke's prose has a definite talent for drawing me into the story from the first page.  - Casee Marie, Literary InklingsBeautifully written and engaging, I can't imagine anyone not getting lost in these pages. - Ionia Martin, Readful ThingsI love the way she consistently builds realistic characters I can root for. - Tricia Drammeh, Authors to Watch

From the Author Since A Long Thaw was previously traditionally published, it's already been professionally edited and vetted by a standard gatekeeper, which hopefully will help give it that little extra bit of credibility in the sea of self-published books.

From the Inside Flap I've always imagined A Long Thaw as a modern interpretation of the old prince and the pauper story. Abby and Juliet are cousins who, until the age of ten, live the same privileged, sheltered lives in a big Irish Catholic family. When Juliet's parents divorce, her mother moves across the country so that she no longer has that safety net. The cousins reconnect in their twenties and the book deals with the ways we are changed by our experiences as well as the ways we are unchangeable.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. A beautiful novel of the heartbreaks and joys of family By Casee Clow In her second novel following 2012′s Monsoon Season, Katie O’Rourke returns with a story of the heartbreaks and joys of family. As children cousins Abby and Juliet were inseparable, spending their summers creating a lifetime of memories together. Everything changed when Juliet’s parents divorced and her mother moved her to the opposite coast: while Juliet lived a struggle-filled life in California, all but raising her two younger sisters in the shadow of their mother’s neglect, Abby was left to grow up as the privileged only child of a loving, sustained family. Years later, Abby and Juliet come back into each other’s lives and realize that the two close-knit little girls have grown into two very different young women; but with faith in the power of family and friendship they’ll find that the girls they once were are still close at heart. Through familial struggles, boyfriend woes, and all the trials and triumphs of life, Abby and Juliet will be reminded of how they’ve each been the one person the other could always depend on.A Long Thaw carries many of the same wonderful qualities that made Monsoon Season such an impressive debut and extends them into a somewhat more expansive sophomore novel. O’Rourke’s prose has a definite talent for drawing me into the story from the first page; the world of her fiction comes to life with impressive clarity and her characters are immediately interesting. I felt deeply connected to Abby and Juliet; their closeness was almost sisterly in the way that they didn’t really skip a beat reuniting, despite whatever years and secrets were there between them. As characters their differences balance each other out in a terrific paradox: sheltered, fortunate Abby is the protective one while Juliet, for all of the hardships in her life, is the more vulnerable of the two. They were, by effect, like puzzle pieces that fit together perfectly, in many ways two halves of one whole. In the same vein, their differences give way to plenty of misunderstandings – such as Juliet’s ability to always pick the wrong man and Abby’s perpetually high expectations of others – but as the story progresses it’s particularly interesting to see their vices switch. The novel became, for me, an engrossing look at two vastly different yet perfectly attuned characters, and how they bring each other closer and further away from their best selves.Beyond their relationship as cousins, family dynamics play an even broader role in A Long Thaw, particularly between Juliet’s father Allen, Abby’s mother Rachel, and the cousins’ grandmother Mary. O’Rourke rotates her narrative focus to encompass all of these characters, a unique strategy that allows her to take the reader momentarily away from the current happenings of the story and back into the history of each person, revealing a depth of insight into all of the different personalities that come together in the novel. It would be easy for these asides to distract the reader, to cause us to lose interest when we’re taken away from the action, but it’s a testament to O’Rourke’s talent with building intriguing characters that we are willing to venture back into the past with them, ever curious to learn more. The pacing of O’Rourke’s prose is beautiful in itself, her narrative handled with serene straightforwardness; the recollections of Abby and Juliet’s New England summers as children captured, at least for me, the truest and most personal essence of familial memories. The novel’s atmosphere had a way of feeling instantly familiar while the story and structure were a constant reminder of its singular uniqueness. That alone makes A Long Thaw a worthwhile read, but perhaps its greatest charm lies in the full-heartedness of its two heroines and the contagious feeling of connectivity we get from them. With its deeply thoughtful prose and warm, honest storytelling, A Long Thaw proves again O’Rourke’s talent for taking us out of our own world and into the realm of truly engaging literature.(Review © Casee Marie, originally published on February 12, 2014 at LiteraryInklings.com. A copy of the book was provided for the purpose of review.)

Childhood lessons and loyalties clash with the insuppressible urge to make new connections, romantic relationships are seldom easy or drama-free and sometimes, a return to family is exactly what is needed. A Long Thaw is a rich, nuanced story about something universal: the attempt to be happy with ourselves and hopefully, with someone else. A big-hearted and deep-thinking novel about two young women navigating the peaks and valleys of love while relying on their friendship and family bond to keep them balanced along the way. --Mary Vensel White, author of The Qualities of Wood

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Good story By April Wood "Looks like it's going to be a long thaw."Abby has always had a safety net, unlike her cousin Juliet, who has an absent father and a drunk mother who depends on her financially. Abby is her cousin's keeper and protector. Not that Juliet can't protect herself...Juliet is tough, in many aspects of her life, except when it comes to love. Perhaps her poor choices in men are because her father abandoned her and her sisters at a young age. All Juliet wants is a man who won't leave her, and then there is Abby, who has a list of 50 qualities that are required in her perfect mate.Allen made a mistake ten years ago, and as a result he lost his wife and his daughters. He rationalizes that they don't need him, they have each other, but he tells his family otherwise. At Thanksgiving dinner, a family secret is let out, leaving everybody to question, "why?", and "how could I have missed so much?" "What can be done to make things right?"This broken family sets out to make things right, because life goes on, and as long as life goes on, there will be more chances to get it right.I liked this story, because I like stories that center around family. Juliet and Abby have a bond that cannot be broken. Even after not seeing each other for ten years, they immediately click back together. They take care of, and lean on one another. These girls act more like sisters than cousins. They are lucky to have this bond, and they both need each other more than ever.I did have some problems with this story though. For one, there are no chapters. The story is separated by segments, chronicling each character's POV, (specifically Abby, Juliet, Mary the Grandmother, Rachel the aunt/mother, and Allen the uncle/father). There was a lot of back story throughout the book. It would get to a really good part, and the next segment would go way back in time which irritated me. If the story was structured differently, I would have given it 4 stars.Another thing I found peculiar, but in no way did I take it into consideration for my review, was that I thought the author was from the United Kingdom. I say that because of her language: "favour", "kerb", "pyjama", "favourite", "colour", "neighbour", "behaviour", etc. When I saw she was from New England, I was very surprised. I wonder why she writes British-English?The ending was anti-climatic, and disappointing. I felt that there should have been more. This is what I took away from the The Long Thaw, by Katie O'Rourke, that life goes on. That as long as you are here breathing on this earth, you have a second chance at making things right! What a powerful message!Overall, this is a good story, and I did like it. 3 Stars!

From the Inside Flap

  • This is an excerpt from Chapter 2. Enjoy!
I had reason to be wary of Rowan Gresham when I saw him at the coffee shop. Crazy doesn't always look crazy. Sometimes it looks like the most handsome and refined gentleman ever encountered in one's short life. Gresham sat at a corner table for two but the confident set of his shoulders, the rigid turn of his jaw, and the indiscriminate menace in his glare occupied the space of half a dozen. The pendant light above him had blown providing a concealing shadow, and despite the prime coffee consumption hour the tables around him stood deserted. I wasn't the only one who picked up on his threatening vibe. The gray counter near the register betrayed streaks of white from repeated abuse as half-conscious and completely-apathetic baristas slid hot beverages across it day after day. I ordered a large latte and added a shot of mocha at the last minute because I sure deserved it after the day I'd had. The air in the coffee shop was infused with the thick, robust aroma of coffee beans, and I took a fortifying breath. Blind courage was what I needed to face him again. It had gotten me this far. Just a bit further yet to go.I made my way to the back table and sat across from Gresham, who stood while I approached and sat again once I was seated. This unfamiliar display of chivalry pleased me, but I hastily remembered I hated him and quelled any gushy feelings. "Thank you for coming, Stella. I had my doubts you would. Do you care for anything besides coffee?"Rowan Gresham had a slight accent. Not English, exactly. Not French. I couldn't quite place it, but it seemed to have the influence of a romance language. He rolled the "r" in 'care.' Sexy. No, Stonewall. He's a weirdo, remember? His lightweight black sweater probably cost more than my entire ensemble, which that day was nothing to sneeze at. I'd worn my navy sheath dress, the one cut a little too low in the back and a little too high in the hemline. A patterned belt cinched my waist and defined the line of my chest. Casual ballet flats ensured the outfit still said 'daytime.' "I almost didn't." I forced the words out and raised my chin. "But I couldn't overcome my curiosity." Nerves inspired me to swipe an imaginary strand of auburn hair behind my ear. "So? Let's hear it. What do you know about my father? And just so you know," I warned, "I asked the woman at the counter to keep an eye on our table, should you get any more ideas about throwing me over your shoulder. And three people know I'm meeting you." A complete lie. I hadn't even told my roommate Lizzie the truth about the meeting."Yes, I'm sorry about that," he stammered uncomfortably. "But you must admit that the first time was to save your life, and the second...well, I did need you to get you into the car quickly." To his credit, he looked abashed as his gaze shot to the floor and he licked dry lips."Well, let's get right down to it, then, Mr. Gresham." I sat back in my seat, crossed my arms and gave him my best scowl--eyebrows pulled together in the middle and everything. "What do you want to tell me so desperately that you were willing to kidnap me?" He gave me a smile that was less like a smile and more like a you-were-cute-for-a-minute-but-now-shut-the-hell-up. "I have some information I'm afraid is going to give you a bit of a shock. There's no real way to ease into it. The world...you...things are not what they seem." He was silent for a moment and scrunched up his face, turning his head from side to side as if he was trying to work out some great mystery. He hesitated so long I thought he wouldn't go on. But then he set his square jaw and nodded once. "Look, I'll just dive right into it. Stop me if you have questions. There exists a whole other realm in which beings have varying lineages, abilities, knowledge. This world is parallel to the one you know, but it is vastly different. My world knows of yours, of course, but very few people within your world have the slightest idea about mine.""Well, sure," I said and leaned back in my chair to look over my shoulder and see if a) anyone had overheard the whackjob, and b) I could make it to the exit before he grabbed me again. "You will undoubtedly find this impossible to believe, and for that reason and for the sake of saving valuable time, I've brought a substantial token of proof of my world's existence." I was reeling from his sudden louie into Looney Land, but this profession did grab my attention. Visions of tin-foil Fedoras and Hot Pockets bearing the likeness of Baby Jesus filled my mind as I waited for him to produce his 'proof.' Idly, I concluded it was surely one of life's great travesties that such a fine specimen of a man was a raging nut-job.I looked up to find Gresham glancing nervously around the coffee shop. He put his hands under the table and motioned with his head and eyes that I should look down. I rolled my eyes. "Oh, great. More penis tricks. No freakin' way." I shook my head on a smirk. The guy was unbelievable. His eyes bulged and his jaws clenched in silent disapproval of my resistance. He made a jerky nod toward the floor again. "Oh, what the hell. Seen one, you've seen 'em all." I leaned over and peeked at what he wanted so badly to show me under the table. What I saw under that table shelved any further sarcasm because there, plain as the smirk on my face, was the tiniest person I had ever seen. Dressed in a three-piece brown tweed suit, he looked more like an old-world attorney than a mythical creature, though he did have facial hair enough to deserve the gnome moniker. Or was that a gnomiker? The distinguished little man stood with hands on his hips and tapped a foot in impatience. Despite being the size of a large doll, he managed to look down his spectacles at me and raised a furry eyebrow in the universally understood, 'Well, seen enough?' I nodded numbly in answer to his silent question. Gresham offered his own nod of thanks to the little man, and then he was gone.I aimed for cool and collected, but my heart raced madly and my mouth was so dry I couldn't move my tongue. I reached for my latte, but my hand shook so that I returned it to my lap. I smoothed my dress against my legs in an attempt to rid my hands of their sudden moisture.No. I did not just see what I thought I saw. Not possible. "Since you seem to be at a loss for words--a phenomenon I don't take lightly since in my experience you rarely have little to say--I'll proceed." I shook my head dumbly--again--so Gresham continued. "My world is made of beings far different than this one. The major variant between the two is that humans on Earth evolved from primates, while the residents of Thayer evolved from many groups within the animal kingdom. Thayerians trace their ancestry from hoofed animals like deer and horses, from wolves, bears, amphibians, as well as primates."My eyes lost focus as I considered his words."Are you still with me?" "Yes," I croaked. My brain-to-mouth function was firing at a snail's pace."Another marked difference is that Thayer is a far more magical realm. Since it's much older, and our people have varying lineages and talents, we have developed and learned to control supernatural abilities."I didn't believe what he was saying for one minute. Another world? No. I'd know if something, somewhere else existed. Wouldn't I? Astrophysicists and astronomers would know if worlds existed parallel to ours. Wouldn't they?

By Samantha This was a Facebook suggestion, so I tried it.Bad idea. The good parts about the book:1) Not many typos or grammatical errors. (Thank you, Jen Crane, 'cause those are painful.)2) Beautiful cover. The bad parts:1) A heroine who has ostensibly graduated college but has the maturity of a sixth grader. Maybe. She has the emotional depth of a butterfly. Pretty much on the level of "he's hot, she's a bitch, where's my mommy?"2) Inconsistent characterization. The main squeeze, Gresham, must have multiple personality disorder. He is all over the place. The roomies/friends are almost interchangeable, because they all have mood swings where they act like someone else.3) Unbelievable relationships. The main squeeze and the second fiddle have zero reason to be interested in the heroine. They just kinda glom onto her. She's not nice, not funny, not interesting, and not particularly interested in either one of them other than a superficial "hot bod" attraction. Judging by what the heroine says about them, she doesn't even like them.4) Pages upon pages of material that gives nothing to the story. Maybe this stuff is a set-up for further down the road in the series, but it bored me senseless.5) A main character who I despise. She stands around talking when she's about to captured. She abandons a friend and gets mad when he doesn't look for her. She wants to get freaky at the weirdest times. She's so narcissistic that she ambushes her emotionally fragile mother and gets upset when her mother leaves without answering her questions, then promptly forgets about her mother because, hey, dragons and naked peeps. She's also very crude, and not even in a funny way. "Who farted in your Fage?" is a prime example.Summary: I didn't like it. I wouldn't recommend it. Not even for emotionally challenged tweeners.

However, the writing style is choppy and completely unimaginative when it comes to using the English language. The heroine is out of her league and it is reflected in her dialogue which shows a lack of class. I would like to say that I finished the book but I gave up at the phrase "Who farted in your Fage?" used to ask why the male protagonist was frustrated. I would love to see the concept completely redone with a heroine who is more appealing.

9 of 10 people found the following review helpful. If you like fantasy, romance, and adventure at a fast pace.. By Debra Think Anne McCaffery and Rosemary Rogers combined with Harry Potter...I know the first two authors date me but, really. I was a little disappointed at the beginning when there was so little information about Stella Stonewall's family and life. The storyline begins with action and rarely lets up. By halfway through the book I had forgiven the Ms. Crane for not being more forthcoming. It was a fun and a quick read that left me wondering what was going to happen next. I have already purchased the electronic version of Origin Exposed: Descended of Dragons, Book 2, so I don't have to wait to find out.

Simple ways to balance your body's pH leading to greater health By Valerie Caraotta In a highly informative fashion Carmen Reeves has once again presented a helpful resource that is needed for every individual to consider. The alkaline diet will rebalance the body. When the body's pH is where it needs to be healthy and longevity is increased while sickness and disease is thwarted. Reeves explains the biology of bodily acidity in an easy to understand fashion. She states that we should aim for a balance of 80/20 alkaline – acidic foods.Avoiding acidic foods such as sugar, wheat, gluten, caffeine, and alcohol are pointed out by the author because they harm the body and weaken the immune system. She further goes on to indicate that an acidic body will:– Hinder the absorption of vitamins and minerals– Drop oxygen levels in the blood– Leave you feeling fatigued– Fluctuate blood sugar levels– Accelerate agingProvided for the reader is an entire list of health issues and acidic foods related to pH imbalance in the body. Learn how to test pH levels. Discover alkaline foods in the following categories: Green leafy vegetables, root vegetables, legumes, herbs, and fruits. Also provided are herbs, teas, spices and supplements to balance your pH levels and cleanse your body. This book continues with seven powerful lifestyle tips that will assist in balancing your body's pH value. As an added bonus, a recipe section is given at the end of the book that has smoothies, juices, teas, tonics and beverages very easy to make. I encourage everyone to download this book which will lead to greater health. Carmen Reeves has several health books on the market well worth exploring. Definitely five star in quality of content.

By Donna feibusch I enjoyed reading Between Her Cowboys: (Taken by Cowboys: Part 4) A Billionaire Western Romance, all about Spencer & Nate business partners & owners of a guest ranch & Jessica the girl from NYC who stole their interests. In the third part of the story the guys are still enjoying their mutual time with their lady. The author wrote an amazing story and the characters have made this story come to life. All the parts of this story feed off of the other, so make sure you start with one and read all the way thru five. It's about three people who are giving Menage a shot, and so far seem to be enjoying this relationship! Hope you give this guest ranch a shot, I can't wait to read part five!

Grainger By Kevin Tipple Claude Guestman had the misfortune of being killed by a bullet intended for U.S. Deputy Marshal Gideon Miles as he ran for cover at the Bellows Hotel. At least Guestman got laid first by the whore Carlie who is now running from her room and screaming as best she can. Marshal Miles won't be nearly so lucky if those chasing him have their way.Marshal Miles is running out of bullets and rues the fact that he ever came to Hell Town, Wyoming. The place is such a dump of a town there is no local lawmen to deal with anything that happens. That meant it was Marshal Miles who had to go after a gang of outlaws who, according to the town's madam Laurel Wedgewood, had cheated her out of a lot of money. But, instead of fleeing, the gang had been waiting at the edge of town and they nearly got him. A running gun battle has ensured with the bad guys pursuing him back to the hotel.Needing firepower and hoping the madam has at least one weapon, Marshal Miles plans to barricade himself in her upstairs room and hope for the best. Gideon Miles is no dummy and he is pretty sure she has answers to give him even if she doesn't have a weapon though no self-respecting madam would be weaponless. The latest in a long series of books featuring Gideon Miles is another good one. Filled with plenty of action and a bit of a mystery this latest western from Edward A. Grainger aka David Cranmer is another good one. It opens with a bang and a break neck pace that is maintained from start to finish. Well worth your time Hell Town Shootout: Gideon Miles Novelette is a western that quickly pulls you in and does not let go until long after the last page.Material was supplied by the publisher in exchange for my objective review.Kevin R. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A Fine Addition to the Series By James Reasoner The dependably entertaining author Edward A. Grainger (aka the astute editor and publisher David Cranmer) returns with HELL TOWN SHOOTOUT, a new tale featuring Deputy U.S. Marshal Gideon Miles. Grainger plunges right into the action with this one, which finds Miles in the appropriately named settlement of Hell Town, Wyoming, to take a gang of bank robbers into custody. He finds himself ambushed instead and is forced to hole up in the local hotel with a dwindling supply of ammunition as the gang lays siege to the place. But even though he's outnumbered, outgunned, and faced with treachery within as well as a savage assault from outside, it never pays to underestimate Gideon Miles...Grainger does a great job with the almost non-stop action of this tale, told in appropriately terse and tough prose, then elevates it to an even higher level with a lengthy epilogue that delves deeper into the character of Gideon Miles. Over the past few years, the Cash Laramie/Gideon Miles series by Grainger and several other authors has produced some of the best hardboiled Westerns being written today. HELL TOWN SHOOTOUT is a fine addition to the series. If you've read the others, you'll want to read this one, too, and if you haven't, HELL TOWN SHOOTOUT would serve as an excellent introduction. Highly recommended.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Gideon Miles Returns By Heath I can't tell you how happy it makes me to see Edward A. Grainger (aka David Cranmer) return to Gideon Miles. Gideon is a character near and dear to me, one I've had the pleasure of helping shape (full disclosure!) and the way Grainger portrays the Marshall is spot on, and every bit as rounded and fully-realized as any hero in a Western story has ever been. This one, "Helltown Shootout", finds the level-headed and pragmatic lawman up against overwhelming odds as he takes on an entire gang of outlaws in a thrilling cat-and-mouse series of violent encounters. Allies are scarce in Helltown, and Gideon Miles finds himself pretty much on his own, relying only on his quick wit, blazing Colt, and trusty spring-loaded wrist blade. In the epilogue, Grainger gives us some nice insight into Gideon's processes, and the things that inspire him as one of the first black U.S. Marshall's in the Wyoming Territory. Highly recommended for action fans.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Highland Homerun, Rich and Delightful. Absolutely Engaging! By Amazon Customer Lush, lush Highland tale! Loved! That's it. I've decided. Paula Quinn is a deity in this genre. or a cyborg Highland/Historical Romance novelist here on Earth to churn out Rich, multi-dimensional characters, thrilling plots and imagery that captivates. The Scandalous Secret of Abigail MacGregor is my favorite Highland/Historical Romance of 2015. And I indulge in this yummy genre often. It is especially fitting, as Quinn supersedes herself as 2014's The MacGregors: Highland Heirs #2, was my absolute favorite Highland Historical Romance last year. Scandalous Secrets definitely lived up to it's title. The story, the story! So exciting! Abigail is the fierce and loyal daughter to the true heir of the English crown who will stop at nothing to protect her beloved Highland homeland from the possible threat of invasion by the sitting Queen, Anne. Our hero Daniel (Daniel!!!!) is the most beloved Knight of the Queen's forces who is duty bound to fetch Abigail and bring her to meet the Queen to ensure no usurping is on the horizon. Daniel is a hero- and I don't mean in name only as the male protagonist. Daniel is a HERO. The stuff little highland girls (and highland wannabe girls) dreams are made of. He can fend off more than a dozen men in battle, bathed in blood and still stop the heart of his bonny lass. He is fearsome and viral and maturely sexy with hard planes and ridges in his abdomen and legs of a stallion and a big heavy, weighty peen! More than that he is a good man. Honorable and respectful, wise and handsome. Hero, through and through. Daniel is beholden to his queen and fights the temptation of the promise he sees in young Abigail's eyes. Abby is smitten, done for, her heart lost to Daniel not long after they begin their journey to England. Though she is no brainless, daft lady and the deadly secrets she harbors she cleves to until discovery is unavoidable. Abby is a worthy heroine. She is proud, but not too obstinate to deny the desires of her soul. She is protective of her clan and has her eyes set on being clan chief when her father steps down. Ambitious and stubborn, there is no chance she will completely bend to any man's will. Tough mettle and soft womanly wiles, she is something to behold! "You smashed a vase into my skull. I'm glad you slept well and didn't burden yourself with thoughts that you might have killed me." She blinked, giving reprieve from the cold frost of her eyes. "Ye were treating me like a misbehaving child. Be thankful ye're still alive."The obstacles to their HEA were many. They were quite literally in a Hatfields vs McCoy's love affair. He was a sworn sword against her people who believed another to be the rightful ruler and participated in insurgency against the crown. She was resolute in her bone deep belief that her own kin is the true heir to the throne and the current Queen the pretender. The dangers for falling in love with Daniel were substantial- the most imminent being a supremely delusional and (allegedly) homicidal admirer in the Duchess Charlotte Blackburn, a venomous, faithless woman hell bent on sharing Daniel's bed and claiming his child. Drama in the castle!! Yet true to her courageous spirit, Abby was cautious, but confident when confronted with Lady Blackburn's ire."Caution with Lady Blackburn is imperative," she told Abby. "She seems to be charmed by Daniel alone." "Where I grew up," Abby told her, "we cut the heads off venomous snakes." Daniel reveled in the glorious woman sitting across from him, so bold, so proud. [Queen] Anne saw her inner strength and leaned closer in her chair. "What if the snake has been your friend for many, many years? What if you don't know how to cut off her head?"Yessssss! The plot thickens! One of the finer aspects of this book is that the plot was ever moving, always advancing and revealing new (hilarious!!) characters and court intrigues. Daniel escorts Abby to London and on the way they encounter bandits, an ambush and aid from the most unlikely Highlander local clan. Despite being chocked full of Alpha male presence, there were no chauvinistic nuances. I loved that the feminine power was revered and respected by all of the male characters. I loved not knowing who would leave their home behind to start anew with the other. There was definite promise of an HEA, however, it was so damn entertaining, I was not preoccupied with it. I laughed aloud, blushed, giggled and audibly panted several times over. Seriously, the build up of sensuality and sexual tension was rewarding (as evidence by my sticky fingers heh heh, tis true lass!!)"She wanted more, something instinctual and feral, something he gave to no other woman before her or after her. More than his body she wanted the wild heart beneath all the armor...She was awakening parts of him that had been put to sleep long ago. Duty to God and to the throne came before selfish desire. Honor came before love. But not tonight. Tonight he would give her what she wanted and take what he needed..."Aye! Aye indeed! Perhaps, the third most important character in the novel, has to be the locale. Traveling the Highlands or on the countryside back roads into England, I felt as if I were one word away from transporting myself and becoming a self proclaimed clan member. I saw myself traveling with the Daniel and Abby, evading danger, I watched Daniel slaughter Abby's would be attackers and (like the creeper I am) I watched as they dared that first kiss under the stars. Quinn's descriptive language was engaging and endearing and the only think I missed about this book was an epilogue! I wasn't ready to let them go, it was all over far too quickly but not the least bit unsatisfying on the whole. if you are a fan of historical fiction and you love these honorable kilted warriors and noble Knights, I recommend this gem. It is the third of it's series, but stands alone just fine. Be warned that you are likely to want to immerse yourself and snap up books 1 & 2 and wait ever so impatiently for the next installment, The Taming of Malcolm Grant (The MacGregors: Highland Heirs #4).

He didn't really want to go for her until the night before he actually left...• The Jacobite Lass - Second born of the Laird, but determined to be the next Laird of the Clan MacGregor. Abigail is as stubborn as her father, if not more so. When the summons comes, the decision is final, at least in her mind. She is going in her mother's place. Period.• The Queen - Lonely, untrusting, failing health. Anne has...had one friend, Charlotte. She has one man she trusts, Daniel. He is like a son to her. Her cousin Richard Montagu...she has to be able to trust him, he's family, even though she doesn't like him much.• The Bit...errr, the mean one ;-) - Charlotte Adler, once a close friend and confidant to the Queen, now? Not so much. The snake-in-the-grass likes to make it appear as though nothing has changed, but really almost anyone could see that she has an allegiance to herself only.• The Villain - Richard Montagu...is he really the villain? He really is...or is he? I guess you'll have to read the book to find out ;-)• A murder, a kidnapping and assassination attempt - I'll leave that to you to figure out who was murdered, kidnapped and assassinated...or attempted!• The MacGregors - They are out in force, from Callum on down to Adam! I believe nothing else needs to be said on that subject. *swoon*• Tristan - My Knight In Shining Armor. I have missed him so much, and he plays such a pivotal part. I admit, I re-read his parts probably 3 or 4 times just so I could spend more time with him.• Colin - My knees go weak when I even think about this man (I know, you probably think he is just a character in a book...he isn't to me! He is a man who lived in the 1700's in Scotland...but I digress) Colin played a very important roll too. Isn't it amazing that my two very favorite characters would play such important roles in this book? I myself am over the moon.• Ill-fated Romance - The Jacobite Killer and the Jacobite Lass...oh, we know they shouldn't be together, they are polar opposites with such undeniable chemistry from the moment their eyes meet. When Paula Quinn works her literary magic on these two, amazing things happen and we as readers reap the benefits. She weaves an intricate story, adding history with fiction, inviting us in, and I'll be honest, I don't want to leave. If ever there was a book to purchase, this is it. The Scandalous Secret of Abigail MacGregor will be one of those books I will read over and over. I adore Paula's protective heroes, I love her strong and independent heroines and I love it when they clash and love. Thank you Paula for sharing your wonderful mind with us.Until Next Time!xxoo Terree

By teach4173 This is book 3 in The MacGregors: Highland Heirs series. When Abigail MacGregor's mother is called to England by the Queen, she knows she will stand in her place. Her mother has just gotten over a prolonged illness and if someone doesn't go, it could mean war for Scotland. She didn't count on being attracted to her English escort.General Daniel Marlow, can't believe that the Queen has sent him to Scotland to get one of her handmaidens. He would much rather be on the battlefield defending England. When he starts to have feelings for Abigail, he feels as if he is betraying his Queen. Can these two enemies find an everlasting love without betraying their countries?I fell in love with the male MacGregors cousins when I read The Seduction of Miss Amelia Bell (the first book of Quinn's that I had read). When she started telling the stories of the females I didn't know what to anticipate. After reading The Wicked Ways of Alexander Kidd, I fell in love with them too. The love affair continues with Abigail! We see a lot more of the older generation in this book. I've not read any of those, but after hearing bits and pieces of Abigail's parent's story, I'm going to have to read those pretty soon!!I loved the enemy turned lovers theme that this story follows. It takes place in a time where the English and the Scots hate each other. With stories like this, you have the characters fighting their attraction for each other because they feel like it is wrong. That adds all kinds of drama. Add to that the life of a want-to-be lover, an assassin and the Queen of England and the drama never stops!Next up is Malcolm's story (I can't wait!!!!). It will be interesting to see how Quinn brings him up to scratch!! September seems so far away...Thanks go out to Forever via NetGalley for a copy of the book in exchange of an honest review.

1759. Lady Sarah Lennox arrives at Holland House and at just fourteen years old is swept into society and hailed as the beauty of London. She is fated to catch the eye of the young Prince of Wales, the future King George III, and they begin a romance which is as all-consuming to the young lovers as it is forbidden by George’s advisers when he ascends to the throne. For Sarah’s political connections make her an unsuitable choice in the eyes of the King’s controlling mother, Augusta Saxe-Gothe, and Sarah begins the battle that will engage in her whole life – to find love in the face of enormous odds. Amid the turmoil of her royal romance, Sarah has disturbing visions – a young woman with flame-red hair appears at her bedroom door one night, and this ‘ghost’ makes itself known at crucial moments throughout her life. Sidonie Brooks, a talented musician who specialises in the eighteenth-century harpsichord, moves into a flat near to Holland House in the late twentieth century. There she begins to have strange, inexplicable episodes in which she seems to step through time and witness the life and intrigues of a beautiful young woman. Sidonie is just beginning to reach a new level in her career, even as she is torn between her handsome neighbour, Dr Finnan O’Neill, and the Russian musical prodigy Alexei Orlov, and as she tries to unravel the mystery of her visions of Sarah Lennox. As Sarah’s life of romance and scandal begins to interweave with Sidonie’s musical and romantic awakening, the two young women will find their lives running along extraordinary parallels, as they both seek the ultimate happiness of love. ‘As Shadows Haunting’ is a sweeping, romantic historical novel, bringing to life the eighteenth century through the haunting tale of Lady Sarah Lennox. ‘She has a strong sense of history and an uncanny ability to bring it to life’ – Daily Mail ‘Sympathetically told, and the lives of the twin heroines touch and part in a very convincing manner’ – The Times Deryn Lake started to write stories at the age of five then graduated to novels but destroyed all her early work because, she says, it was hopeless. A chance meeting with one of the Getty family took her to Sutton Place and her first serious novel was born. Deryn was married to a journalist and writer, the late L. F. Lampitt, has two grown-up children and lives in Mayfield, Sussex, with two large cats. She is also the author of ‘Sutton Place’, ‘To Sleep No More’, ‘The King’s Women’ and ‘Pour The Dark Wine’. Great time slip By Misfit "And it had been the dark looks of both Charles Stuart and his French lady that had passed through the generations to Sarah Lennox, making her, at fourteen, already one of the great beauties of her day."Gosh this was good, and definitely one for fans of the time-slip books. The present day story was centered around a musician who has recently moved into a flat next to the ruins of Holland House and she starts falling back in time to see visions of Lady Sarah Lennox, a great beauty who apparently caught the eye of the young George III."To say that he gazed was an understatement. His Majesty positively stared, while Sarah, a born coquette if ever there was one, looked at him from beneath lowered lashes and dropped a small curtsey in acknowledgment of his attention."History is written and we all know George didn't marry Sarah, but she led quite a fascinating life, and at times a very sad one. You can certainly look up her story on Wiki, but I don't recommend it too close to reading the book - you'll spoil yourself.I really enjoyed both the past and present day storyline, and thought the time-slip element well done and believable. I hadn't heard of Lady Sarah before, so also appreciated a glimpse into her life and I'm looking forward to reading more. I also liked the closer look into George's life, especially as a young man. What if he'd been able to marry Sarah and how different history might have been? Bonus points on using the time slip element to make such a ending for the baddie in the present day. Such lovely just desserts :)

Not really a romance By Kindle Customer While I appreciate the author's dedication to historical accuracy, this book was disjointed and lacked a clear focus. I think that the author attempted to make it a love story, but in Sarah's story, aside from the King, there were just too many men in her life for the reader to ever connect and feel a storyline of true love and passion. In the modern day love storylines, I think that there was too much indecision to ever capture or evoke feelings of longing or angst. The time travel, if it can even be called that, was so poorly executed that it made no sense at all to even have it. It didn't benefit the story or the characters at all. It would have been better if Sidanie simply read the documents instead of showing up randomly back in time. Overall, I wish that the author had stuck with her original intent and focused on George III. His storyline seemed to have the most potential.

Review Jewish Book Council “Spring 2015 Jewish Book Preview” featured title“A fast-paced and compelling debut.” — LIBRARY JOURNAL"A heartfelt story of loss, hope, and reconciliation." — BOOKLIST“Brafman’s tale of three generations of women shows that woundedness—damage to mind and soul—can travel down the generations, and that so can kindness, courage and, ultimately, self-healing. . . . [Washing the Dead] succeeds in showing how family history has a way of sneaking up on us from the depths of the past, shaping the present in ways both familiar and unexpected.” —Haaretz" . . . (a) beautifully wrought novel, one in which Brafman examines the inner lives of her characters with the dexterity of a surgeon and the compassion of a saint.” —LILITH MAGAZINE "Striking debut novel . . . poignant." —THE JEWISH NEWS WEEKLY“Compelling.” —THE NEW YORK JEWISH WEEK A Washingtonian magazine "Book Washingtonians Should Be Reading"“Preparing the dead for traditional Jewish burial is considered the holiest and most sacred mitzvah that a Jew may perform because there is no way for the dead to repay the act of goodness. . . . In performing this mitzvah [in Washing the Dead], the protagonist cleanses herself of hatreds and misunderstandings that she has been carrying around since her youth.”—Jewish Book Council“Deeply moving. . . . We are eased into an Orthodox Jewish community and a family burdened by secrets as gently as if an old friend were guiding us every step of the way. . . . Washing the Dead by Michelle Brafman was that novel.Washing the Dead is a Jewish mother-daughter story. And a Jewish grandmother-mother-daughter trilogy. The heart of the story is Barbara Pupnick Blumfeld, a suburban mother who grew up an integral part of a small Orthodox synagogue in the Midwest. The novel shifts back and forth between the present and the past, reaching back into Barbara’s idyllic childhood. Her best friend is the rabbi’s daughter, her mother is one of the congregation’s most involved members and the young Barbara Pupnick is confident about her place in the world.Barbara’s life implodes when her mother’s affair with a non-Jewish employee of the synagogue becomes common knowledge in their tight-knit community. Reeling, Barbara leaves Orthodoxy, leaves her Milwaukee home and begins to piece together a future without her community. Barbara’s relationship with her elusive mother June, whose presence in Barbara’s life waxes and wanes, is the knotty quandary that gradually disentangles in this beautifully crafted novel.Although Barbara is not religiously observant in her adult life, elements of Orthodox life are woven through the novel. Decades after the breach with her Orthodox past, the Rebbetzin (rabbi’s wife) of her childhood beckons Barbara back to the community to participate in the tahara, the ritual washing of the body before burial, of a popular and well-loved teacher who inspired her career. This is the first of three washings in Washing the Dead. Each washing brings Barbara closer to uncovering her mother’s secrets and healing the wound that threatens her relationship with her own daughter.Washing the Dead introduces readers to the Jewish ritual known as tahara, performed prior to burial. A tahara includes respectful cleaning, ritual washing and dressing of the body of the deceased in specially prepared shrouds, called tachrichim. Brafman describes the solemn, prayerful tahara ritual in rich detail in the book’s final chapter. If you savor stories of family secrets and forgiveness that touch your heart, Washing the Dead by Michelle Brafman is a novel to cherish.http://jewishvaluescenter.org/jvoblog/washing-the-dead

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Washing the Dead By KarenRachel I was immediately engrossed by this story about Barbara, a kind-hearted, middle class woman who grew up in the Orthodox Jewish community in Milwaukee. Barbara had an early idyllic childhood, shielded from hardship, deep into connection with friends and Jewish community, when she finds out a secret about her mother with devastating impact. Washing the Dead is about how the fallout from this secret has shaped Barbra's current relationship with her adolescent daughter and her aging mother. I was particularly gripped by the relationship between the teenage Barbra and her mother especially as her mother becomes increasingly despairing and disconnected from the family. Witnessing Barbra carry the burden of her mother's secret and her subsequent breakdown, while trying to care for her was heartbreaking. These sections of the book felt very immediate to me and I could feel the dread that Barbara experiences as anger and fear divide mother and daughter until her mother leaves the family and Barbara moves out to begin her own journey as an adult. The second part of the book shows how Barbara, overwhelmed by her mother's aging and subsequent move closer, and her worry that her daughter will carry the legacy of depression and poor decision making into the next generation almost falls apart. This part of the book felt somewhat flat to me. It was moving to read about how the rabbi's wife reached out to the adult Barbara to take responsibility for the ways that Barbara became somewhat of an outcast in the temple, and help her understand her mother better yet some sections felt distant and not as riveting as the childhood story.I loved the title of the book and all it implies about how Barbara took care of her mother and herself, along with the rabbi's wife and others. I saw it as a gift; to her mother's imperfect life, to her own growth and ability to forgive and her own wise daughter's counsel during this time.Thank you to Edelweiss for allowing me to read this book for as honest review.

Stankus I first met Michelle Brafman's book, Washing the Dead, as a reviewer for the 2015 Gaithersburg Book Festival and it was my #1 choice of all the new books I reviewed. I liked it so much that I went out and purchased a copy for myself.Washing the Dead tells the story of a young woman ripped away from her religious community for her mother's indiscretion (carrying on an affair with the religious order's groundskeeper) that she walked in on -- but not is all as it seems as you will find out after you read the book. The mother and daughter grew estranged only to be reunited many years later by the death of the young woman's mentor. Washing the Dead refers not only to the symbolic ritual of returning the body to the earth, but also to cleanse the bad blood and estrangement between mother and child. If there is one book to read this summer, it's Washing the Dead.(Side Note: I was walking in a farmer's market and overheard multiple people gushing about the book. It has the word-of-mouth buzz most authors could only dream of.)
