By Miss Barbara Reading Robinson Crusoe as it was originally penned about 300 years ago is an interesting experience. The pace is very slow and Defoe spends what we readers, sitting in 2015, think of as an enormous amount of time spent on minutia. Crusoe thinks that his ordeal is a punishment from God for not obeying his father. He eventually gets over that mindset and actually begins to enjoy his trial as an opportunity to prove himself. It is amazing how much paraphernalia and gear he is able to salvage from the wreckage of the ship. He raised animals, grows barley and builds a shelter that proves more than adequate for his needs. This book, though, is not the adventure story that many have been lead to believe. It's an accounting of the day to day existence of a man living mostly in solitude with only his thoughts and his God to keep him company. It's told in an antiquated style but once the modern reader adjusts to the cadence it's actually an interesting and enlightening book.
