By Keith Reimer (oakheart@ibm.net) My copy of this book was accompanied by a dustcase filled with dozens of desk-sized maps covering every phase of the campaign, some focusing on small parts of the action, others broadening out to all of northern Virginia. The author even recommends that you use the maps to follow the text, moving colored pushpins around on the maps as you progress. While I didn't go that far, I must say that this book surpasses any military history that I have read in its integration of map study, broad analysis, and small-unit action. This is an old book, but is a certain classic. The language and writing style are timeless, so don't let that scare you away. I continue to view THE CAMPAIGN OF CHANCELLORSVILLE as the epitomy of what a campaign or battle study should accomplish. If you can find a copy, get it, and enjoy.

By History Buff This book as originally published is indeed a classic, and in my view the best study of the Battle of Chancellorsville that I have ever read. What made it a classic though, was not just its in-depth technical coverage of the battle, but more importantly the incredibly detailed maps that went with each action and movement described. These maps put you into the woods and thickets. There were nearly 50 of them. In previewing the book on-line, i was ecstatic to see one of these maps in the preview, and to see them all of them listed in the index. Well, when I received the book I found that only 3 or four of the original maps are in it. Two others were clearly copied, but with fold out page left in hence making them totally useless. Most just missing or replaced by a blank page. In fairness there was a warning about blurred print and possibly missing pages---I was thinking OK three or four here an there not an issue----but not nearly all the maps???? That should have been said. If all you want is the text just buy one of the 1995 Smithmark Publishers books which can be found on line or in used bookstores for much less than this book. Their title: Chancellorsville by John Bigelow, Jr.---a slight change in title, but all the same text--no missing text pages. My guess, is that unlike this publisher they did not use the exact title, because they did not have the maps and did not wish their version to be confused. The original books are rare, but not that hard to find if one wanted to do a useable reprint with maps. Never imagined so much would be missing. Felt duped. Don't do it.
