Millions of people worry that drinking is affecting their health, yet are unwilling to seek change because of the misery and stigma associated with alcoholism and recovery. They fear drinking less will be boring, involving deprivation, difficulty and significant lifestyle changes.

This Naked Mind offers a new solution. Packed with surprising insight into the reasons we drink, it will open your eyes to the startling role of alcohol in our culture. Annie Grace brilliantly weaves psychological, neurological, cultural, social and industry factors with her extraordinarily candid journey resulting in a must read for anyone who drinks.

This book, without scare tactics, pain or rules, gives you freedom from alcohol. By addressing causes rather than symptoms it is a permanent solution rather than lifetime struggle. It removes the psychological dependence allowing you to easily drink less (or stop drinking). Annie’s clarity, humor and unique ability to blend original research with riveting storytelling ensures you will thoroughly enjoy the process.

In a world defined by ‘never enough’ Annie takes us on an intellectual journey through the world of alcohol and specifically the connection between alcohol and pleasure. She dispels the cultural myth that alcohol is a vital part of life and demonstrates how regaining control over alcohol is not only essential to personal happiness and fulfillment but also to ending the heartache experienced by millions as a result of secondhand drinking.

Finally, with perfect clarity, this book opens the door to the life you have been waiting for.

Read this book. You’ll be glad you did.

“As a fan of Jason Vale I was interested to read This Naked Mind. It was so interesting to read more about the science behind addiction and the unconscious mind. I highly recommend this book to anyone, whether they are interested in cutting down or staying alcohol-free. I loved it!”Sarah L., England

“What an amazing book! I thought I could consciously decide to give up alcohol, and now I understand the necessity of informing the unconscious mind and then the cravings just disappear! I have also read and applied the work of Dr. John Sarno and knew the power of the unconscious mind but cannot believe how effective the book was for me. Thank you!”Theresa G., NC

“I loved this gentle, down-to-earth explanation of problems with alcohol use, and the clear, structured way to challenge your thinking and behaviors around drinking. It helped me pass from shame and guilt into real and positive action.” Elizabeth R., Australia

“This Naked Mind brought clarity and focus on my drinking and 10-year struggle with sobriety that I had never paused to examine. Annie methodically brings the reader along a logical path of discovery. I felt she was speaking directly to me and that she knows exactly where I am mentally and physically. I continue to return to certain passages for reaffirmation. I highly recommend the excellent book to anyone seeking a refreshing approach to seeing alcohol with eyes wide open.”Sam G., Australia

“Reading This Naked Mind has been nothing short of a miracle. It has helped me to see alcohol for what it is and ended a 25-year cycle of binge drinking. I have not had a single craving since reading it, which is unheard of for me. I don’t feel the need to avoid temptation, because there isn’t any! A must read for anyone who wants to take control of their drinking but doesn’t want a lifetime of struggle.”Kay W., UK

“Annie’s book exposes the false notion that alcohol is essential for an interesting and happy life. The real gem in Annie’s book is the idea that changing your relationship with alcohol need not be a life of endless suffering and deprivation, that a decision to change can be simple and liberating. This book forces us to confront society’s relationship with alcohol and will change lives.” Tony S., Australia

If you are seeking to improve your relationship with alcohol, this book is the answer By Mary P Background: I’m a woman in my early 30s and I’ve considered myself a “problem drinker” for the better part of the past 10 years. My habit was 2-3 glasses of wine most evenings - more or less depending. My biggest downfall was that I was someone who on certain occasions couldn’t stop drinking once I started, which always lead to painful consequences.I was on a quest to improve my relationship with alcohol, be able to moderate, slow down, and make better choices; my ultimate goal was simply to feel in control around alcohol. This book changed my relationship with alcohol without any feelings of deprivation or suffering, nor the need for willpower or stressful exercises in self-control. I had previously read Allen Carr’s Easy Way to Stop Drinking and some of the information stuck with me, but the language was a bit dated and the motivation to keep improving my relationship with alcohol was short lived. After finishing This Naked Mind, it felt as if any temptation to drink and the struggle to control cravings were wiped clean from my brain. For the first time in a decade I feel in control and empowered to effortlessly make informed conscious decisions about drinking, where before I consistently gave in to physical and psychological cravings to drink even when I didn’t actually want to give in. That’s the battle most of us face when we become regular drinkers, and This Naked Mind will help you win that battle. I am able to do everything I did as a drinker, including hanging out in bars with friends, without any of the anxiety that I used to experience struggling to moderate or resist temptation. Life is just more enjoyable now.Annie Grace offers a lot of personal accounts in her book which I found helpful and relatable. Some of the information is repetitive but that is intentional and most of all it is important, because repetition is needed to undo the deep conditioning from society where drinking culture dominates! You don’t have to label yourself an alcoholic or addict to benefit from this book. No matter how much or how little you drink, if you are seeking to improve your relationship with alcohol, This Naked Mind is the answer. I would even recommend this book to those who feel they have a healthy relationship with alcohol, because the information contained in this book is invaluable and we are all better off for knowing it!

I had been worried about myself and my gradually increasing alcohol consumption for a number of years. After going through al heartbreaking divorce (in no small part due to my drinking behavior), and after trying for two years to moderate my drinking to a "normal" level, I read Allen Carr's book The Easy Way to Stop Drinking. While I liked Carr's message, the book contained some gaps in logic and seemed just a tad bit superficial and cheer-leaderish. The Naked Mind focuses on drinking and fills in the gaps in the Easy Way philosophy with science as well and in-depth first-hand experience in using a similar philosophy to cure alcohol abuse. As an added bonus, I have started to apply the concepts and lessons of the book to other areas of my life where I have displayed unhealthy thinking and/or behavior and it is proving very effective. I highly recommend this book.

"Maybe I'll Remember My Next 30 Years" - Tim McGraw By Amazon Customer 30 + years ago I had my first experience with alcohol drinking Bud "Talls" in my friend's backyard during a sleepover. This marked a gradual descent into a completely mindless relationship with alcohol that lasted well into my adult life (actually truth be told as recent as 2 weeks ago (10/12). I had the typical college experience of binge drinking. Now married with 3 kids, this pattern continued but under a different context as a highly functioning alcoholic progressing professionally, being somewhat present as a Father & Husband now drinking consistently and on occasion heavily. My friends and work peers would not consider me a problem drinker as we all had the same consumption patterns and view toward booze as a stress reliever, a requirement for social events, ect. A practicing Catholic, I took the brave step one year of giving booze up for lent (40 days). I suffered tremendously with cravings and feelings of deprivation until I hit St. Patrick's day where I took my 1 day of "dispensation" and extended it indefinitely and then gave up - sliding back to the comfort of old patterns. The realization of the harm I was doing to myself and those around me ate me up from the inside out, but could not change the pattern with "will power" as demonstrated by my failed attempt at temporary abstinence mentioned above. A few ago weeks I was on my LinkedIn account where I saw Annie's post asking for feedback on 3 potential choices for a cover for her new book. The post caught my eye and I eventually found my way to her website thisnakedmind.com. I downloaded her book and "consumed it" (no pun intended) in a day and a half. I literally have done a complete 180 and found the insights needed to completely turn around my conscious (and more importantly unconscious) views on alcohol and have not touched a drop since. I know it's only been a short time, but I see things with a mental clarity that has not existed since I was 16 years old when I started my descent. Physically, my body is thanking me with renewed boundless energy as well. I invite anyone who has been thinking about changing their relationship with this drug to read this book. It is truly revolutionary. Thank you Annie for helping me get back my life!

"Tremendously charming and sexy, Served Hot is a knockout!" – RT Book ReviewsIn Portland, Oregon, the only thing hotter than the coffee shops, restaurants, and bakeries are the hard-working men who serve it up—hot, fresh, and ready to go—with no reservations… Robby is a self-employed barista with a busy coffee cart, a warm smile, and a major crush on one of his customers. David is a handsome finance director who works nearby, eats lunch by himself, and expects nothing but “the usual”—small vanilla latte—from the cute guy in the cart. But when David shows up for his first Portland Pride festival, Robby works up the nerve to take their slow-brewing relationship to the next level. David, however, is newly out and single, still grieving the loss of his longtime lover, and unsure if he’s ready to date again. Yet with every fresh latte, sweet exchange—and near hook-up—David and Robby go from simmering to steaming to piping hot. The question is: Will someone get burned?

First in the new Portland Heat series!

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. B rating... By Smitten with Reading My Review:This is a sweet little story. The entire story is told from Robby's point of view and he owns and runs a coffee cart in the business district of Portland. For months he's had a crush on one of his customers, but can't read the signals that David is sending him that run hot and cold.David's lover of 12 years died suddenly two years ago. But in that 12 years, his lover never came out, never acknowledged their relationship, never did anything with David like couples do. That's the only relationship David has ever known, so he doesn't know how to act normal. He's always had to hide everything. That makes this relationship fairly rocky, because David is not a guy to wear his heart on his sleeve, or talk about things, or to even think about what maybe Robby needs from them. I'll admit, that made this book a bit difficult...just because David is so clueless and by being that way, he hurts Robby. But overall I enjoyed the book. My heart ached for David and the 12 years he spent with that other guy...just because that relationship was so bad and toxic for him. He deserved better. But David ticked me off, too, because there were times when it just seemed like he should make more of an effort to understand Robby. At times he was very self-centered and that got old especially as their relationship developed. It seemed like Robby was making all the sacrifices for them to succeed. But it was a good read and it will be interesting to see where the series goes from here. I enjoyed the Portland setting.I received a complimentary copy of this book in return for an honest review.

By Jen M Enjoyable read about two men trying to figure out how to be in a good relationship, after both of them have been in bad ones. I would have liked to have had David's POV as well, since the only thoughts and feelings revealed are Robby's. This made me sympathize more with Robby, even though David was also going through some rough times. Overall a sweet read with some steamy scenes.3.5 starsARC provided via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

A classic from “the dean of true crime” (The Washington Post)—now with a new foreword—this 1983 masterpiece tells the incredible story of a Spokane, Washington serial rapist who was exposed as the handsome, privileged son of one of the city’s most elite families. For more than two years, a rapist prowled the night streets of the homey, All-American city of Spokane, Washington, terrorizing women, sparking a run on gun stores, and finally causing one newspaper to offer a reward—the calls taken by the distinguished managing editor himself, Gordon Coe. In March 1981, luck and inspired police work at last produced an arrest, and Spokane shuddered. The suspect was clean cut and conservative…and Gordon Coe’s son. For eighteen months, Jack Olsen researched the cases of Fred and Ruth Coe to try to learn not only what happened within that family, but how and why. He interviewed more than 150 people and built up a portrait not only of that extraordinary family, but of the mind of a psychopath. And searching the memories of the women in Fred Coe’s life, he unearthed a most horrifying question: What is it like to love and live with a man for years—and then discover he is a psychopathic criminal? In this “gruesomely spellbinding” (Glamour) examination of the mind of a psychopath and of the women—and men—who were his victims, Olsen delivers “a harrowing portrait…It has become fashionable with books about vicious crimes to compare them to Truman Capote’s In Cold Blood. Finally there is a book that deserves the comparison” (Richmond Times-Dispatch).

Son: A Psychopath and His Victims, by Jack Olsen

Amazon.com Review On one level, this 1984 Edgar Award Nominee is the story of a sociopathic rapist, a clean-cut realtor named Fred Coe who raped dozens of women in sunny Spokane, Washington. Olsen paints the portrait of a man whose exterior grandiosity and air of savoir faire barely conceal his deep insecurity about his career failures--a temperamental prima donna who emulates the pathetic hero of "American Gigolo." But on another, even more compelling level, this is the story of the women in Fred's life: His histrionic, clinging mother is a fair-skinned beauty in jet-black wigs, outrageous attire, and excessive jewelry, who eventually plots to kill the judge and prosecutor who put her dear "Son" away. A wife, and later on a girlfriend, both devoted to Fred, are devastated by his exposure as a brutal rapist. And several of Fred's many victims are also compassionately portrayed in all their individuality.

Review “Fascinating . . . recreates the bizarre chain of events that unraveled the fabric of a seemingly all-American family and scarred the lives of so many innocent people. Olsen succeeds on all levels, from detailed storytelling and haunting character studies to compassionate treatment of the rape victims.” (Los Angeles Times)“Superlative reporting. Olsen turns what promises to be another run-of-the-mill crime story into a drama that invites comparison to Truman Capote’s In Cold Blood.” (Newsday)“A chilling story . . . Gruesomely spellbinding.” (Glamour)“A hefty, detailed, and horrifying masterpiece. . . . This reprint not only adds a personal touch from best-selling true-crime author Gregg Olsen but puts in a new, portable form what is arguably Jack's finest book.” (Booklist)“Remarkably well done. . . Olsen brings his strange subjects to vivid life in this memorable reconstruction.” (Publisher's Weekly)“A riveting look at the monster lurking beneath a criminal psychopath’s polished exterior. . . . Hits the reader with loaded bursts of insight, terror, and tragedy.” (Detroit News)“Might be the book that wins the Pulitzer Prize for Jack Olsen. . . .Vividly and thoroughly describes a psychopathic rapist.” (The Milwaukee Journal)“An extraordinary case. . . . A harrowing portrait . . . . It has become fashionable with books about vicious crimes to compare them to Truman Capote’s In Cold Blood. Finally there is a book that deserves the comparison.” (Richmond Times-Dispatch)“A-read-until-four a.m. book! . . . I have never read a book that delineates the psychopathology of both the rapist and his disintegrating family so graphically . . . Every woman in America should read Son.” (Ann Rule, author of The Stranger Beside Me)“[Has] powerful impact.” (People)

About the Author Born June 7, 1925, Jack Olsen was the award-winning author of thirty-three books published in fifteen countries and eleven languages, including Son: A Psychopath and His Victims. Mcdonough I've read almost everything Jack Olsen has written (he's one of the folks on my short "I buy everything" list), but even in Olsen's body of work, this is a standout.Olsen has written about more heinous criminals -- after all, this guy is "only" a serial rapist. But "Son" really captures the creepy, narcissistic world of the sociopath. The level of detail and understanding is remarkable. He captures the essence of what is pathetic and frightening about these people in a way few other writers have. I first read this book more than a decade ago, but I still think about it.If I were ever going to write a true crime book myself, I'd sit down and read this one about 10 times before getting started.

48 of 48 people found the following review helpful. I couldn't put this book down By J. Wilson This is an incredible story of a serial rapist in Spokane in the early 1980's. Jack Olsen has done a remarkable job in his research. Fred "Kevin" Coe and his mother are two of the strangest people I've read about in the true crime genre, and I believe, as the police did, that soon he wouldn't stop at rape, but move on to murder his victims. His rapes became more violent and frequent. Like many sociopaths, Coe believed he was smarter than the police. Unfortunately, he was able to manipulate and lie his way out of many situations from an early age, and often with the help of his mother, so it reinforced his narcissism and his belief that he was untouchable. The rapes were also happening at a time when the Spokane police were stretched so thin that "minor" crimes slipped through the cracks, and the mentality was that the women were putting themselves in the situation. Jack Olsen has done an extraordinary job in chronicling the details of the series of rapes, as well as delving into who Coe was, and the devastation he wrought on so many lives. I highly recommend this book if you can find it.

In clearing out my massive collection of books a week ago, I stumbled across a 500 page hard copy with no dust jacket I had gotten at a garage sale. I almost tossed it before checking the contents and am beyond glad I didn't. I started reading SON when I got home from my second shift job that night. It was 4 a.m. before I felt it fall out of my hands and drop onto the floor. This was repeated for about 6 nights; the time it took me to read this book. It is lengthy, thorough with no wasted fillers. Before work today I decided to hop on line to see if I could find out if Fred Coe (Kevin) is still alive, where is he, etc. Imagine my shock (there are no coincidences in life...I keep forgetting that) when I found a site advising September 6, 2006 he is up for release. That is about three weeks from today. How timely. I am really glad I found this book on my shelf, read it immediately and now will watch for the outcome of this horrible story. I am almost 60 and an avid reader and true crime books are at the top of my list. Ann Rule, in my eyes, has always been THE BEST.This book is right up there with Ann Rule's quality of writing and expertise. The reader is "right there" as best as one can be and, of course, with this book, that puts the reader RIGHT THERE when they wish not to be. There are lessons to be learned from this tragedy. All I can say is, read this book as fast as you can. Order it used on Amazon - I see there are many hard copy as well as paperback available. Then, sit back and tune in to Court TV or Prime Time or one of the Court/News channels the first week in September. I know I will be.

Great writer, poor plot By Kerry Hunter Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review."Leah Mills lives a life of a fugitive – kept on the run by one terrible day from her past. For the first time she dares to believe she can live a normal life. Then, on the fourteenth anniversary of that day, she receives a card. Someone knows the truth about what happened. Someone who won’t stop until they’ve destroyed the life Leah has created. But is Leah all she seems? Or does she deserve everything she gets?Everyone has secrets. But some are deadly."I had such high hopes for this book. I truly did. I'd heard nothing but wonderful things, but by the time I'd put down this book it just... fell flat for me. It didn't live up to the expectations of it that I had. While reading, I kept flip flopping between liking this book and hating this book, then liking this book again etc. So let's go into a little more depth, shall we?Overall, Croft writes well. The story flowed well and at a moderate to fast pace, creating an easy to read novel that's written wonderfully. I finished this book in two days and that's only because I had uni during this time, otherwise I probably could have finished it in one sitting. Not because I was particularly riveted, but because everything flowed so beautifully. I'd definitely be interested in reading anything else Croft puts out, because I can clearly see she has wonderful ideas and premises in her mind and I look forward to seeing how she develops as an author. The characters were written well, and the story is told from two different time perspectives: one in the past when Leah (our protagonist) was a high school student, and one in the present day when she is a fully grown adult living with the choices of her past in high school. This provided an interesting overlook into the development of Leah over the years, and we really get to see how her actions moulded her personality and her actions in her future life. I quite liked this.Where this book fell short for me, though, was the plot. I knew who the "baddie" was as soon as they appeared in the book so it was literally like biding time until it revealed what I already knew. And then a twist came at the very end of the book that I'd already figured out for myself as well, so even the major twist came as no surprise to me. It just all felt so predictable, and so unrealistic in some places that I did actually laugh out loud, which is certainly not what you want to be doing when reading a psychological thriller. So really, this author truly has potential and I'd love to read her other books, but the plot just fell short for me in this particular novel. 3 stars out of 5.

Gripping, a real page turner By Emmabbooks (I received the Kindle version of this book, free of charge, from Netgalley in return for an honest independent review.)A psychological thriller, based in London, with plenty of twists and turns and mystery. What happened in Leah's past and why is it catching up with her now? The narrative moves between Leah's school days and the present, when she is aged 30. Excellent plot, and gripping stuff, that keeps the reader guessing until the end.Sadly I found the writing style very irritating. However the storyline was so good that I forgot about this when about halfway through the book, and raced to the end to find out what was happening and how it would all end. Glad I read it - what a storyteller Kathryn Croft is!

Leah Mills is now a young woman living with an horrendous burden of a past she was involved in when younger. A boyfriend she once had. Adam the lad with the "attitude" who came across to me as the 'poor little rich kid' who endeared himself to Leah. Then there was her friend and her boyfriend.Coming up to date in present time, we have Leah who is living in a little flat, with her books as her friends and her little job at the library which is her sole main 'outlet' called Life, her Life, Leah's lifeWe go back and forth in time and present, at first I was wondering what was happening, then once I got the gist of how this author was working this story, I relaxed and got 'right into it' hook, line and sinker. This has enough twists in it, it can tie you up in knots. All the way through, we have questions, so many questions going around in our heads, this author was very clever to lead right up to the end revealing all.1. Why is Leah living a lonely life away from her friends and her Mother2. Why doesn't she have any friends anymore3. WHAT the hell happenedWhy is everything going wrong in her life?Whose watching her? What happened to her friends?what the hell is going on.....I was saying these words so many times throughout reading this, "what's going on" "what happened""who happened"....and then I thought, OMG I do hope after all this tension and the stress level I have been under reading this, that the author makes it worth it.Oh she certainly made it with it. Oh yes and with another punch toward the end for good measure.WOW.This was an awesome book to read. It well deserves top stars and certainly a book I would recommend and purchase for others who like books such as this.TenseAnxiousBreath taking moments.I want to thank * Kathryn Croft * the author for writing such a wonderful book and to *Bookouture via Net Galley * for my copy. What a journey.
