By Amazon Customer Briley Forrester, hotshot big city reporter, is in the tiny Old Order Mennonite town of Arborville to dig up some dirt on the residents. He and his boss think there must be more to the story than the outward appearance of these people. He stays at the Bed and Breakfast run by Alexa Zimmerman. She's not Old Order Mennonite but she lives plain since her extended family, the Zimmerman's are. Both Briley and Alexa have issues from the past that haunt them. Briley was abandoned at 5 and raised in foster homes. Alexa was abandoned as an infant and raised by Suzy Zimmerman. Also featured in the story are Steven Brungardt and Anna-Grace Braun who are "published" to be married. Steven has inherited a farm in Arborville from his deceased grandfather. Steven doesn't want to be a farmer, he wants to be a teacher but he doesn't want to disappoint his parents and Anna-Grace. Anna-Grace isn't sure she wants to go to Arborville either because she has discovered that her birth parents are from there. She doesn't want to know who they are but she doesn't want to run into them either. This story is a continuation of When Mercy Rains and this book is number 2 in the Zimmerman Restoration series. Book 1 deals with Suzy Zimmerman's return to her family with the daughter she raised (Alexa) and seeing for the first time since birth her own illegitimate daughter that had been adopted by a cousin.Time out! I need to grumble at the author a little: Mrs. Sawyer, you left us hanging on Suzy at the end of book one. Now at the end of book two you leave us hanging on Suzy, Alexa AND Anna-Grace. Book 3 (since this is a trilogy) better be Faith Restored or some such and resolve all three of these. They are all begging for resolution.Just so you know, that rant above was in fun. I love Kim Vogel Sawyer. She is arguably my FAVORITE of all favorite authors. She provided this book to me in exchange for a fair and honest review. I would have snarfed it up anyway because I've been waiting (impatiently) for this next installment in the story. Please speed-write book number 3, Mrs. Sawyer.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. the longing to please those we love, the struggle of finding out what we want ... By Bobbi Graffunder "When Grace Sings" picks up where "When Mercy Rains" left us. This second book in the series continues the modern-day story of the Zimmerman Family and Alexa finds herself at the start of a new chapter in her life....working to make her dreams of being a successful business woman and member of the Zimmerman family a reality. When a mysterious "outsider" and distant relatives come to stay at her B&B, the security and stability Alexa thought she had found gets put to the test.Kim Sawyer has a gift of words....a way of drawing you into the story and allowing you to walk beside her characters as their lives unfold. As I read, I found myself seeing bits and pieces of my own life story in each of the characters. What compelled me most of all was the fact that I saw pieces of both who I am and who I want to be. Though the world of Old Order Amish and Mennonites is far-removed from my middle-American lifestyle, this book shows us that some human experiences transcend religious and cultural differences: the desire to belong, the longing to please those we love, the struggle of finding out what we want to do with our lives, and the intricate ways that our decisions impact us and those around us.Above all, this truly is a story of grace....for "grace is the face love wears when it meets imperfection" (John Lynch).

By Alison Phillips I was so happy to find a new book to read during this busy time that would make me appreciate the calmer life. I didn't read a lot of details about the new book but it sounded really interesting so I requested a copy through Blogging for Books. When Grace Sings: A Novel (The Zimmerman Restoration Trilogy)by Kim Vogel Sawyer was the second book in the series but I figured that if it was really interesting then I would check out other books by the same author. The even better news came when they sent me the copy of the first book too!! It was a great excitement when I put two and two together (meaning the two books) and figured out that I got two books in the same series. Now here is hoping the third one comes out soon!!!!When trouble roars into quiet Arborville, Alexa and Anna-Grace find themselves the target for discord and exposed secrets. Can they continue to seek the God of all grace amidst the fog of confusion?Alexa Zimmerman wonders if the Old Order Mennonite community in Arborville, Kansas will ever fully accept her. Her family roots here aren’t what anyone thought when she first arrived, but she is hopeful that her culinary and hospitality skills will win the skeptics over. The bed-and-breakfast she’s operating needs to succeed so Alexa agrees to allow Briley Forrester, the hotshot reporter from Chicago, to stay as a long-term boarder not knowing his real motives for being amongst the Plain folk. But when Alexa agrees to host her cousin Anna-Grace Braun, the presence of extended family brings out Alexa’s insecurities and sets Briley on the trail to uncovering a web of hidden truths. Plans for a secure future and the sweetness of young romance hang in the balance when Alexa and Anna-Grace have to face that their secrets are interconnected, binding the two in ways they could not have imagined. Pick up the book to find out what happens because I think that you will be surprise!!I was a little sad when this book was over and that was mainly because I didn't have the next one in the series yet. I can't believe that there is only going to be one more because I know that I am going to need a lot more of these characters after reading the first two books in the series. I enjoyed every minute of it and had trouble putting it down just like the last one. I love the mix of the real world with the shelter Mennonite world that mix in these books. It is great to see that this is the life that people have now and that the different choices that you make in the "real" world don't seem nearly as important when you see the choices that the Mennonites make. Many people know that I choose to be frugal and use our money to make the best choices for our family. I know that many times I feel some of the decisions that I make are a little extreme but I had a conversation over dinner the other night with family members that I had three cars in all my time driving (my first car only for a week before it was totalled and both others keeping for over 10 years) and my husband four (counting one he paid his parents for when he was really young). This family member had over 40 cars in their lifetime and he was not much older then we were with 7 cars between us. The flashy car that the reporter drove in this book made me think about those decisions and how we need to make the decision to pick out the best for our families and not what others expect of us. I hope that this book helps you stop and take a look at your life and the decisions that you make. Pick it up at your local library or bookstore soon!!!** I was given a copy of this book from Blogging for Books for my honest opinion and review. All opinion here are my own.
