Heartwarming, lovely short story By KC "Wedding Favors" (sequel to "Perfect Day") packs so much emotion, masterfully balanced with tender moments and the occasional bit of humor. What i loved best is how Wyatt's turmoil is soothed and kept in perspective by Graham's love and steadfastness, and, in the very last scene, how past, present, and future are expressed in simple, loving gestures.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Perfection! By Kelly I love this book and this series! It's a sweet little novella that is, well, perfection. It's like Mr.Lanyon too a full sized novel and ripped out the unnecessary stuff (fluff, angst, and the annoying sidekicks) leaving/gifting his readers with pure gold.

For me, that's enough said but since not everyone has his work as an immediate "1-click", I'll expand my review a wee bit. Now, normally when I come across a story, no matter how short or long, is based on a bride or groom's cold feet, it's not overly appealing to me. I know that "cold feet" is a real thing that every bride or groom deal with and for that reason I find it a bit cliche. Now, having said that, this is a bit different. Yes, Wyatt is having cold feet but in his mind I think it has more to do with his inner fear that Graham is doing the wedding thing simply to please him combined with his paranoia that there will be three people in the marriage because he can't completely let go of the idea that Graham isn't over his deceased lover Jase. I really enjoyed watching Wyatt "ruin" the wedding, work it out in his brain and heart, and then have to "fix" everything-and all under 10000 words. If you liked Perfect Day, you'll love Wedding Favors and if you haven't read it yet, now is a perfect time to check it out.

Wounded Tiger is a true story of triumph, tragedy, and redemption set in the brutal realities of the US war with Japan in World War II.  Meticulously researched and wonderfully told, Martin Bennett traces the lives of four people through this defining moment of history and how it shaped each one of them. Then, in a surprising twist, their lives intertwine in the aftermath of war for an enduring story of redemption. This is a story of pride and humiliation, aggression and self-sacrifice culminating in hope and freedom.  Wounded Tiger is epic, compelling, and inspirational.  It will impact you long after you've read it. Wayne JacobsenAuthor, Pastor and Collaborator on the multi-million Bestseller "The Shack."

Wounded Tiger, by T. Martin Bennett

Review Edited review by Annette Kristynik of "A Well-Watered Garden."Rating: 5 Stars for excellentSource: Free copy from T Martin Bennett in exchange for a review.I'm amazed (more like blown-away) by the story T Martin Bennett, has captured in Wounded Tiger. It's an epic account of three families whose lives were a historic part of the Pacific War during World War II. How the families came to be connected is only through a miracle of God. A distance of thousands of miles could have prevented an encounter. Hatred, bitterness, and unforgiveness, could have prevented a union. The book reads similar to watching a film. The author stated he'd first written the screenplay, then the book. While reading Wounded Tiger, I imagined each scene in my mind - actually a large panoramic screen. My technicolor vision was full of powerful images, for example: the bombing of Pearl Harbor, the Battle of Midway, the devastation of the atomic bombs in Hiroshima and Nagasaki.Wounded Tiger has contrasting elements: the hate and cruel nature of Japanese soldiers versus the love and forgiveness of the Covell family, or the vengeance and need for retribution of a POW versus a changed heart. There were tender moments when I was captivated by the significance of a character's courage and faith. In seven years of writing reviews (and I've never stated this before), this book stands alone as a must be made story into a film. Wounded Tiger is a powerful story!"Wounded Tiger is an amazing, enthralling story of how the once obscure lives of an Oregon farmhand and a young co-ed intersected with the Japanese pilot who led the attack on Pearl Harbor. With cultural insight and deep pathos, Martin Bennett brings to life this powerful true chronicle of hatred, surrender, and transformation. Wounded Tiger reveals how ordinary lives lived out faithfully to their calling can impact the destiny of a people and a nation. I wholeheartedly recommend Martin’s work and know that you will find it equally compelling." I wholeheartedly recommend Martin's work and know that you will find it equally compelling."Ravi ZachariasBest selling author and speaker"I have read the complete book manuscript. I like the cover which contains the strong face of the young pilot with a full expression of enthusiasm. He is a tiger. He was born in the year of the tiger. You described my father's posture and behavior so well and so precisely, I could feel his presence. He remains a national hero in Japan. I have no idea how the world accepts him today. Some will call him a villain, others will call him a proud warrior who found redemption. I will always admire his guts, his intellect, and his sincerity."Yours cordially,Miyako Fuchida Overturf(Daughter of Mitsuo Fuchida)"Martin, holy smokes! This is a darn good story! It's woven together seamlessly and all of the characters are truly likeable. It's such an amazing story that people need to first understand that it's TRUE. This is a great book and would be an even greater movie. Gotta say, I'm impressed."Dan King, Author of "The Last Zero Fighter"Pacific War historian, Japanese languagecultural consultant for films"The story of Mitsuo Fuchida and his transformation is one of the most gripping stories of WWII and the Pacific War, and it's a story that few have heard about. Martin Bennett's new book, Wounded Tiger, brings this epic drama to life with new details on how a Doolittle raider, Jacob DeShazer, and a missionary's daughter, Peggy Covell, helped effect this change. This thrilling story of war and forgiveness is a must for all."Donald M. The Only Power Which Can Change The Human Heart By Heart4Japan As a former military sergeant in the USAF in Japan, and having been led to Christ by a Japanese man from Hiroshima, Wounded Tiger reminds me of how intensely God desires to reveal Himself to lost souls. The day I met Jesus for the first time, He was wearing Japanese skin! Wounded Tiger is 'thee' story of God's miraculous transforming power within two warriors lives who were bitter rivals...enemies... and then inseparable brothers. The true story of WT will leap off every page, grab you, and will not let you go. I can only imagine when the movie comes out, with what magnitude, it will sweep untold numbers into the Kingdom of God. I wholeheartedly recommend this exciting and and powerful book!

17 of 18 people found the following review helpful. A War Story of Redemption, Conversion and Christian Love By Donald L. Gilleland T. Martin Bennett has woven together a mesmerizing World War II tale. It is a true story about Mitsuo Fuchida, the Japanese naval commander who led the infamous aerial attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, and S/Sgt Jacob DeShazer, an American Doolittle Raider, who bombed Japan and spent 42 months as a Japanese POW. The confluence of events between these two warriors transformed Fuchida’s life.Following the war, Fuchida converted to Christianity and spent the remainder of his life as a Christian missionary. In 1952,he toured the United States, apologizing for his role in the bombing of Pearl Harbor. In 1960 he became an American citizen and he and DeShazer became lifelong friends.Bennett describes in detail the exhilaration Fuchida felt on the success of the Pearl Harbor bombing, followed by the anguish that consumed him over his participation, once he became a Christian. He also takes us into the hellhole DeShazer lived in as a Japanese prisoner for 42 months.Wounded Tiger is a story of brutal wartime experiences, followed by redemption, conversion and Christian love. It is a page-turner that leaves the reader breathless and unable to put the book down until the last page.

There's no better example of that biblical truth than the story of Wounded Tiger. A man who was proud to have led an attack that killed thousands, has his hard heart turned inside out by an act of inexplicable compassion. We've all heard the expression, "a Hollywood screenwriter wouldn't even make this up". Clear your schedule for a day or two. You won't be able to put the book down.

"Chamberlain's powerful story is a page-turner to the very end." -Library Journal

Riley MacPherson has spent her entire life believing that her older sister Lisa committed suicide as a teenager. It was a belief that helped shape her own childhood and that of her brother. It shaped her view of her family and their dynamics. It influenced her entire life. Now, more than twenty years later, her father has passed away and she's in New Bern, North Carolina, cleaning out his house when she finds evidence that what she has always believed is not the truth. Lisa is alive. Alive and living under a new identity. But why, exactly, was she on the run all those years ago? What secrets are being kept now, and what will happen if those secrets are revealed? As Riley works to uncover the truth, her discoveries will put into question everything she thought she knew about her family. Riley must decide what the past means for her present, and what she will do with her newfound reality. Told with Diane Chamberlain's powerful prose and illumination into the human heart and soul, The Silent Sister is an evocative novel of love, loss, and the bonds among siblings.

"Enthralling and gripping...Chamberlain has a gift for telling stories about families whose good intentions go awry in difficult circumstances. Her characters are always portrayed with an understanding that sometimes life's most tragic mistakes require heroic strength to survive." -Book Reporter

UNCOVERING THE SECRETS OF THE PAST By Laurel-Rain Snow Riley MacPherson's family has suffered numerous losses, and the troubled history that seemingly hovers over them all is about to get a lot worse. Leaving behind her stable life in Durham, where she is a school counselor, she takes a leap into the past, returning home to New Bern after her father's death, to settle up his estate. There she finds her angry brother Danny living in his reclusive trailer in the forest, and even though she tries to reach out to him, he keeps her at arm's length. The task of going through her father's things will be hers alone, as Danny refuses to be part of it. An old friend of her mother's, Jeannie Lyons, is an irritating addition to her life as she sorts through everything, and between Jeannie and her daughter Christine, who are readying the home for estate sales, etc., Riley feels overwhelmed and annoyed with their very presence. But as Riley begins to search through her father's effects, more questions appear, and she begins to wonder about the family's hidden secrets and the lies that stood between her and the family she longed for. And suddenly, her connection to Jeannie changes, as more is revealed. What is the truth behind older sister Lisa's supposed suicide? What lies under the surface of Lisa's privileged life as a music prodigy? How did their father manage to change the course of all of their lives by one series of actions? And who is Jade, living across the country in an alternate life?Riley's story is narrated in her first person voice, in the year 2013, while Jade's narrative takes place in the 1990s, following one secret night that changed all of their lives. How will their lives reconnect, and what threats still await them all? A wonderfully unputdownable story, The Silent Sister is a testament to the strength of family attachments in spite of the secrets that lie beneath the facades. Set in North Carolina, occasionally veering off into Virginia and then to San Diego and Seattle, I followed the characters on their journeys. I loved this story, and would recommend it for all Chamberlain fans, and for any who enjoy a good story of family secrets, lies, and deceptions. 5.0 stars.

I am a voracious and eclectic reader and I must say this is one of my all-time favorites. I read It in two afternoons and only put it down to sleep. I felt very caring of Riley's predicament and was happy when she began to figure out the mysteriy she was facing. I couldn't believe that each one she solved only brought another. And some of the answers were even more confusing Wonderfully clever plotting.I am in awe of a writer who can keep me on the edge of my seat. When I get away from the book for a meal or to sleep I can't wait to get back to it. I love learning about the things Chamberlain must learn within the scope of her books from concert violin music to trailer parks and she has such empathy toward the characters that I hardly knew who to root for.I will recommend this book highly to my friends as well as both book clubs I belong to. ONE WARNING! You don't want to start it if you don't have the time to immerse yourself in it. I'm betting you'll have the same experience I did where the world falls away as you turn the pages. Happy reading!

Sadly, this one is of the second caliber. While Riley is a likeable character, the plot is weak and predictable, and the sister wasn't worth the trouble. I didn't even care what her story was, and found it tough to even finish the story. Try some of her other works, there are better ones to be sure.

To eight-year-old Grace Davitt, the world is full of strange wonders. Through the eyes of her mother, Anna—an ornithologist who speaks five languages—their small lakeside town in Vermont becomes a glittering mystery filled with secret tongues, monsters in the lake, and birthday parties for the Earth. Anna’s untamed spirit stands in sharp contrast to that of Grace’s father, a chemistry teacher who examines his surroundings through the lens of rationalism and order. As Grace’s family begins to fall apart and she finds that she must choose between her parents, her conflicting loyalties take her on a remarkable journey that spans all corners of the country—and of her own boundless imagination.

Last Things (Vintage Contemporaries), by Jenny Offill

Amazon.com Review "My mother knew a lot about spies and sometimes hinted that she had been one once. She knew a way, for example, to make an umbrella shoot a poison dart. Also that the CIA had tried to kill the president of Cuba with an exploding clam. She showed me how to send secret messages by underlining words in a newspaper and dropping it on a bench."

To 8-year-old Grace Davitt, her mother is a puzzling yet wonderful mystery. This is a woman who has seen a sea serpent in the lake, who paints a timeline of the universe (in which "one billion years of real time = 24 days on the cosmic calendar") on the sewing-room wall, and who teaches her daughter a secret language which only they can speak. To the reader, however, it soon becomes clear that Anna Davitt is more than just eccentric. As her obsessions grow, her relationship with Grace's father, Robert, gradually deteriorates until at last the family breaks apart and Grace is left alone with her unstable mother.

Writing an adult novel from a young child's point of view is a tricky business, but Jenny Offill pulls it off without breaking a sweat. God is in the details here, and these are spot-on, from young Grace's fascination with the blind girl who lives in the neighborhood to her speculations about the prior tenant of the uninhabited dog house in the backyard. Grace inhabits that peculiar geography of childhood where all things are reasonable, from the descriptions of gazelle-boys in her Encyclopedia of the Unexplained to her mother's mercurial mood shifts. What makes Anna Davitt's spiral into madness so unnerving is the fact that to her daughter this is business as usual. Last Things has been compared to that other classic of unconventional childhood, Housekeeping; certainly Offill's debut is richly deserving of the company it keeps. --Alix Wilber

From Publishers Weekly With an ornithologist mother who speaks five languages (including Pig Latin), who was also possibly a CIA spy, a cryptozoologist or just your average maniacal collector of eccentric facts, young Grace Davitt's coming-of-age story is a bizarre kind of linguistic ontological experiment. Her father is "Mr. Science," obsessed with physical data and categorical details to the point of abstraction. Grace's world is one that readers are unlikely ever to have encountered before; riding the line between whimsical and sinister, she is a unique protagonist. Oddly passive in the way that children considered unconventionally brilliant are sometimes deemed by observers, Grace takes control of her destiny, in the wake of her mother's unexplained disappearance, by reinventing language and metaphorizing her life. She continues with the rich and wacky legacy her mother has left her: home schooling; a "secret language" named Annic in which the alphabet's first 13 letters mirror the second 13, and the "cosmic calendar" in which one billion years of real time can be condensed into 24 days. Nothing in this narrative is standard fare: a bizarre mother-daughter road trip, a boy-genius babysitter, the Loch Ness monster and a recurrent theme of psychological anthropomorphism are among the plot elements. In spite of Grace's sometimes unlovable behavior, she is an engaging character. When she bullies a blind girl, Offil's point is clear; Grace's esoteric knowledge and novel socialization inform but cannot finally change the fact that she is a young girl on shaky ground. On the cusp of a definitively weird adolescence, she's brimming with the implosive, even brutal, energy of that impending transformation. Offill's debut is a rare feat of remarkable constraint and nearly miraculous construction of a most unique family. Copyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Review

“Remarkable. . . . If ‘last things’ means things that will last, then Offill’s novel is one of them.” —The New York Times Book Review“Beautiful. . . . A gently funny tragedy about childhood and madness. . . . Pokes at the boundaries between reason and imagination.” —Newsday“Sparse, elegant, and inviting. . . . Jenny Offill . . . has created a fantastical family, at times loving and sweet, sorrowful and dangerous.” —The Boston Globe   “Offill’s deceptively simple prose, her exquisite sense of metaphor and her ear for humor capture the subtle perceptions of this wise child so that we feel to the bone her burgeoning awareness.” —Chicago Tribune “Last Things mines an interval of childhood before the division of intellectual labor. In this state of innocence, science, philosophy, mythology, bunk, wonder, and sorrow are all one. Jenny Offill’s complicated and arresting farewell to this dangerous time is compelling as few recent novels on the subject have been.” —Rick Moody “Truly delightful.” —The Baltimore Sun “Stunning. . . . Dazzling. . . . A delightful novel, rich for its voracious eye onto real and imaginary moments of quandary in the lives of its characters and in the larger life of the universe.” —Ploughshares “[A] gem of a first novel.” —Los Angeles Times “Mesmerizing. . . . Pitch-perfect. . . . [Offill] writes with a heartbreaking clarity.” —The Times (London) “Offill’s debut is a rare feat of remarkable constraint and nearly miraculous construction of a most unique family.” —Publishers Weekly (starred)

Looney The reader gets a definite sense of the narrator's age in Jenny Offill's debut novel, LAST THINGS. She views everything she relates to us openly and unflinchingly, as a child would do -- and the things she doesn't completely understand are naturally colored with the myths and stories told to her by her increasingly deranged mother, combined with extrapolations produced by her own imagination.Grace's parents are incredibly mismatched. Her father is a complete realist, grounded in science and fact. He works as a teacher in the small Vermont town in which they live, until his objections to a prayer circle held within earshot of his office draw the disfavor of the administration. At one point, we are told that he proposed to her mother with the words 'You're the only woman I've met that will never bore me'. That's certainly proven to be true. Her mother -- who is an ornithologist working at a nearby raptor center -- is given to spouting native myths and beliefs from the far corners of the earth, sometimes obviously inventing stories on the spot to validate her increasingly odd actions. She sometimes speaks and writes in a language invented for her by her father, and attempts to teach it to Grace. When her pronouncements and beliefs begin to seep into her daughter's behavior at school, she vows to home-school young Grace, and the girl is pulled further into her mother's fantasy world.Children usually remember events clearly but in a spotty way -- when speaking of memories, they tend to bounce from one to the next, not concerned (as an adult narrator might be) with beginnings and endings, with smoothing out the rough edges of memory. They remember the parts that have the greatest emotional effect on them, either directly or obliquely. Offill has reproduced this tendency by giving her young storyteller an accurate voice -- it's not a stretch for us to imagine that we're listening to the story through Grace's own words. That being said, the writing is very polished and effective -- as the book spirals through scene after scene to its climax, the effect is very much like a wild dream that comes with the fever of an illness. It's a powerful current that draws the reader in, making the book difficult to put down. It's an interesting ride -- but there's an aching sadness left at the thought of what the shenanigans of Grace's parents are doing to her, to what sort of long-term effects they might have on the impressionable psyche of an 8-year-old girl. It makes me wonder if the two of them gave any thought to how they would raise a child once they had one. Her mother is hopeless, and her father, although he's a bit more grounded in reality, seems completely clueless in relating to his daughter. I can't imagine her emerging from this ordeal without having a fairly skewed view of the world. It's an odd little book -- but very skillfully written, interesting and entertaining. Sometimes it's pretty scary to look as an adult through the eyes of a child -- it makes for a compelling read.

In a Child's Voice By danny grosso A tale of extrordinary people and circumstance, Jenny Offill's greatest feat is reaching back; somehow finding the unspoiled voice of childhood. Offill puts that voice to paper with great dexterity and wonder. Authors often assume different voices for their works. Offill here accepts the clumsy task of doing so with a child's parlance. Without unclouding the child's future,(a task that ruins so many similar works), Offill creates a moving story of a very gifted little girl, Grace, whose future is taxed by her mother's progressive mental illness. The beauty of the work is that, precocious as she unmistakably is, Grace does not see her own life, even her own mother, as beyond normalcy. The novel, in a sense claustrophobic is are many childrens' worlds, is also full of the innocent blue vistas that are a part of a child's ready euphoria. The juxtaposition of these two natures in childhood, and as embodied in Grace, are what makes this novel different and special. Grace has not yet been taught to honor the imaginary line between sanity and mental illness. Her resultant, innocent fealty to her sick mother is the endearing legacay of this story.

Grace is an eight-year-old girl whose mother, Anna is both a dream (for Grace) and a nightmare (for Anna herself). The mother and the father, Robert seem an interesting pair, she creative, bold, irrational and he patient, mainstream and rational. This is the tale of Anna who eventually goes mad, of Grace who doesn't understand that her mother is out of the norm, and Robert who loves but doesn't understand his wife and who eventually must be the stabilizing force for his daughter. The story is a sweet one as Grace is introduced to wild scientific, anthropological, linguistic, and mysterious theories by her mother (and her geeky teenaged babysitter). In fact, much of what Anna teaches Grace is that science can explain one side of an argument as often as it can explain the other side. I loved the various scientific puzzles, the imaginary language that Anna makes up for them, and the tales of hyena-men, gazelle-boys, and living dinosaurs. What is sad about it all is that as Anna's behavior becomes more manic and unstable, it all seems reasonable to Grace (who would not know better) who is blindly loyal to her mother. The family begins to dissolve when Grace's father begins to focus too intensely on his science (to the neglect of the family) and Anna takes Grace on a road-trip. The fact that this novel is written in Grace's voice is beautiful and is a hard feat that the author accomplishes admirably. The fact that the author manages to weave in themes of (animal) extinction, mental collapse, and the disintegration of a family is brilliant. It was so refreshing to read a book involving a child that was truly loving (even though it involved troubled souls, they clearly loved their little girl) and did not involve any hostility.

After the first 20 pages I hated the protagonist. She's selfish, whiny, shallow, childish, self-absorbed, vain and she thinks it's acceptable to slap people with whom she disagrees. I found myself rooting for the ghosts--- the world, and the book, would be better if she were not in it. In addition to her loathsome personality, the book is almost misogynistic. Female characters must be saved by male characters, who seem only to seek out "hot" young girls and fall immediately in love with them. I realize it's young adult-- but so was Harry Potter and other books. This is "10-year-olds trying to articulate YA." I'm sorry, I don't mean to be unkind, but I am perplexed by the good reviews. I'm unsure how a mature individual with a substantial personality and sophisticated reading habits would enjoy this book.

I was hesitant due to the cover image and not having read book 1, but it was free so why not. I enjoyed EVERY second and couldn't put it down!! The story was an original, fast-paced suspense filled with surprises, a hint of romance and written poetically. The only thing that irked me was being reminded several times how her hands got injured..got it first time, but otherwise perfect!

An Entertaining And Scary Ghost Hunt By Believer "Ghost Files #2" is the second book in a series that blends the paranormal, ghostly apparitions, and murder into a thrilling page-turner. It begins with Mattie Hathaway a teen who can communicate with ghosts, survived her mother's attempt to kill her at age five and multiple foster homes as well as the torture of a serial killer. Turning seventeen she not only reaps a loving foster home but a celebration with those she loves including her trusted best friend Officer Dan Richards, only to have her heart shattered when she discovers he's been dating her sexy, rich friend Meg. Stunned by the betrayal she flies to New Orleans to join Dr. Olivet, the "Spook Doctor" and the Malone family who are investigating sinister ghostly sightings at a nearby mansion. What Mattie doesn't expect is to become the prey of vengeful spirits who are determined to feed off her energy and a demon stalking her dreams.Heartbroken by Dan's lies and betrayal she 's attracted to Eli Malone , a gorgeous ghost hunter with beautiful aqua eyes who ignites her passion. But when Dan shows up at the mansion with a protection amulet , an apology and information about her lineage, Mattie has come to terms with her feelings for both men.The plot quickly heats up and tension mounts when Mattie's attacked in front of the restaurant where she's celebrating her birthday by a demon that stinks and spews a black liquid, only to be swept away to Dan's apartment where she learns of his lie and betrayal. In this fast-paced and thrilling sequel the action never stops as events unfold that have Mattie hunted not only by a ghost who wants to drain her energy, but a demon painter who haunts her dreams, spilling her blood to bring his painting to life. Yet she's determined to fulfill her role as reaper and to face the horrors in her scary world, wanting to help the ghosts yearning to crossover. At the mansion the intensity, suspense and horror escalates when Mattie, fleeing heartbreak discovers she's the target of a power-hungry ghost and a demon. Broken, mad at everyone and feeling she's destroyed everything good in her life, Mattie has to come to terms with her emotions if she is to survive against the force that threatens her life. Woven into a story filled with lies, secrets, betrayal and violence there are strong elements of friendship, love and self-sacrifice.Realizing that she loved and trusted Dan more than she ever expected Mattie is crushed by his lie and betrayal. Although strange when Dan and Mattie's relationship vibrated with controlled passion because of her age, her heartbreak turns into an edgy, electrical attraction to Eli Malone. Sensing their romance is predestined Mattie and Eli grow closer even when Dan appears at the mansion with an apology and wanting forgiveness. But it's Mirror Boy ( Eric Cameron) that Mattie truly loves even though the relationship is impossible and he will have to make a sacrifice that will finally take him from her world. With well-developed, passionate characters and chilling antagonists in an entertaining and intriguing plot, "Ghost Files #2" is a must-read that keeps you on the edge of you seat from the first page to the last. I enjoyed it and look forward to reading the third installment in the series.

I have a PhD and still was overwhelmed with some of the info. Skip the info and go straight to the exercises. Well described and easy to follow. I wrote them up on the computer and then used a "seal-a-meal" to make it waterproof for the pool.

Baltimore Volume 5: The Apostle and the Witch or Harju, by Mike Mignola, Christopher Golden

About the Author Mike Mignola began his career in 1980 by illustrating spots in the Comic Reader. He began inking in August of 1983 for Marvel Comics including Daredevil and Power Man & Iron Fist. Mignola is particularly noted for his highly distinctive style, which was once called "German expressionism meets Jack Kirby" by Alan Moore, in an introduction to a Hellboy collection. While Mignola has heavily influenced a new generation of comics artists since he began working on Hellboy, he was something of an odd man out in the superhero comics industry in the beginning of his career. Mignola's imagery stood in stark contrast to the style of his contemporaries. Where others would draw muscular men and slim, well-endowed women, Mignola's characters were usually bulky and rough-looking, and more often than not defined by large shadowed areas rather than fine details. Hellboy was made into a feature film in 2004 by director Guillermo del Toro. Mignola was closely involved with the movie's production. Hellboy also has been made into two direct-to-video animated films, Sword of Storms and Blood and Iron in 2007. The author lives in Los Angeles, CA..

The Witch of Harju was, I thought, especially good, as was Bergting's art. The second story, the Apostle, was also very good but different in the sense that Baltimore himself is listening to someone else's story. As it turns out, the story is everything you expect of a Baltimore comic, so don't be put off by that.Baltimore is still my favorite superhero!

I found myself wearing 2 hats as I read...1) as an avid reader who simply enjoys a good page turner and 2) as a Psychotherapist who specializes in trauma. I knew nothing about this book when I started reading so I didn't realize that my trauma specialist hat was going to quickly kick in.In my work, I often try to explain to patients how complex trauma that occurs at a very young age can be. When we are so young and experience trauma, our little kid brains don't know what to do with that information...so it gets stuck...or dysfunctionally stored. It eventually surfaces and the symptoms of PTSD look different for everyone. Some people have migraines or other physical ailments. Others, like Anna, have flashbacks. In this story, I actually would describe the flashbacks to be so intense that they are possibly even Dissociative episodes, which is common in very complex forms of PTSD. Anna initially is treated/hospitalized for an eating disorder. This is a very common part of PTSD as well. Often people who have been traumatized have such "stuck" and unresolved trauma, that is surfaces in a way that basically presents as a separate diagnosis...such as an eating disorder or a drug/alcohol addicition. In my practice, I have found that it is very rare that an eating disorder or drug/alcohol addiction are truly the underlying issue. Trauma is almost always stuck beneath all of those more obvious symptoms. The author does an excellent job of presenting a teenage girl with an eating disorder. Anna probably also seemed to some people to be rebellious or not interested in school, grades, etc. As the story evolves, the author does a superb job of allowing the underlying trauma to make its way to the surface through intense treatment. The flashbacks that Anna has, which, in my opinion, truly seem like Dissociative episodes, are very real and quite common. So many people who have been traumatized suffer through flashbacks or Dissociative episodes in silence, believing that they are just crazy, dysfunctional, unworthy, damaged, etc. All too often, it is the more obvious issues (eating disorder, school difficulties) that people initially seek treatment for (or get sent to treatment for). Anna obviously had an excellent team who patiently allowed her to process her her trauma at a pace that worked for her...and this, ultimately, probably saved her life. My only criticism is that, in this day and age, our mental healthcare system is not that comprehensive. Inpatient treatment is focused on "get 'em in, get 'em out" and very few patients get the intense help that Anna received. I wish we could figure out how to offer that treatment in the present. It's pretty sad that someone who suffered through trauma in the 1970s actually got much more intense help than she could get in an inpatient facility today.Getting back to my avid reader hat...I loved the light style of writing. The subject matter was intense but the light writing style made it an easy to read page turner. It's the kind of book that you just want to stay up as late as possible to finish. I really enjoyed it and I can't wait for the sequel. I have already recommended this book to many people...some friends and family members...and some patients who are struggling with childhood related trauma. I will continue to recommend this book to friends, family, patients, family members of patients, and other mental healthcare providers. Loved it.

I laughed, I cried, and I cheered for Anna as she dug through layer after layer of pain and loss. A brave first novel, "The Fifth Floor" brings a rare depth of insight into timeless issues that teens face. Unflinching and raw, Julie Oleszek delivers a book that offers more than just a good read. She offers hope.

By Anonymous Kudos to author Julie Oleszek for this coming of age story that gives the reader a unique look at growing up when tragedy strikes life at a young age. Anna's story is compelling from beginning to end. Julie writes with such compassion and understanding of Anna, the story comes to life. Anna's secret is heartwrenching, her journey is courageous. As a RN with many years of experience in family practice and as a school nurse, I recommend this book to parents, teachers, health care professionals, and anyone who is involved with young people. Anna's story gives food for thought about real-life pain, suffering, courage, and survival. I look forward to being inspired by this author again in the future.H.H.

The Spirituality of Age: A Seeker's Guide to Growing Older, by Robert L. Weber Ph.D., Carol Orsborn Ph.D.

Review "Robert L. Weber, Assistant Professor of Psychology at Harvard Medical School, and Carol Orsborn, founder and editor of the website Fierce With Age: The Digest of Boomer Wisdom, Inspiration, and Spirituality, believe that aging can be a meaningful and rich path to mature spirituality. The two authors come from Catholic Jesuit and Jewish backgrounds respectively but have written this cogent and illuminating paperback for a new generation of seekers, or those whom we call spiritually independent individuals. We were quite impressed with the book's foundation of 25 questions, the Twelve Exercises for Seekers and the extensive list of resources for Recommended Reading." (Spirituality & Practice, Frederic and Mary Ann Brussat, December 2015)"These authors make the quest of aging into a journey in which one can take advantage of their expert and unflinching guidance. This can be a tool of extraordinary value to everyone, especially those of us whose memories have become longer than what is likely to be our future." (Robert Simmons, The Tucson Metaguide, January 2016)“Synchronicity brought these two authors together at a meeting of the American Society on Aging. They quickly recognized that they were on parallel journeys, seeking meaning in the second half of their lives. Drawing on both introspection and their conversations with peers, they began turning insight into practical guidance. The result is this book in which they make the case that, as boomers begin to age, society has begun focusing on anti-aging, diverting attention from the benefits older people can derive from facing the reality of aging and the shadow side that surfaces with that reality. Relating to readers from their personal life experiences as well as their Judeo-Christian backgrounds, they ask readers to face (rather than avoid) their fears about aging. They encourage boomers to embrace this new aspect of the life cycle with the same enthusiasm with which they have tackled other stages of life’s journey. They ask them to take a serious look at things like spiritually healthy visions of aging, gaining freedom from illusions, developing neglected qualities, and dealing with feeling disconnected from the Sacred. The book ends with Twelve Exercises for Seekers, which will give your customers the chance to put theory into practice and discover how they can learn to view aging as a blessing instead of a curse.” (Anna Jedrziewski, Retailing Insight, February/March 2016)“At last, a book about aging that does not envision it as a problem to be solved or even as a challenge to be overcome! It greets growing older, as a gift and an opportunity. With age comes at least a little wisdom, and that wisdom is relevant for people in any age cohort. I savored this fine volume and commend it to anyone still searching, as I hope we all are, for the fullness of life.” (Harvey G. Cox, Hollis research professor of divinity, Harvard University, and author of The Future o)“Are you a Boomer on a white-knuckled ride trying to shift into reverse on aging? We all try. This knowing book will relax your grip. The authors illuminate the path of spiritual growth, leading us to come to terms with where we have failed and to make the passage to what really matters. Beautifully written, both from deep research and even deeper personal experience by the authors, a former Jesuit and a Jewish woman. Best book I have ever read on this most significant passage.” (Gail Sheehy, author of Daring: My Passages)“For those of us heeding the call to spiritual deepening in our elder years, The Spirituality of Age is a unique resource. The questions that form the core of this inspiring book are those that many of us carry on this journey. And the rich, experience-filled responses of the coauthors as well as the exercises they suggest will be invaluable in helping readers understand the many facets of their own spiritual potential and development as they age.” (Ron Pevny, director of the Center for Conscious Eldering and author of Conscious Living, Conscious A)“An in-depth look within by two specialists on aging, a woman and a man, aging Boomers themselves. It portrays aging as a spiritual experience, and unlike many current commentaries about people turning away from religion--particularly those who say ‘I’m spiritual but not religious’--they turn that phrase on its head. People across faith traditions as well as secularists will find the book engaging and eye-opening.” (Wade Clark Roof, J.F. Rowny professor of religion and society emeritus, University of California at)“This wise and lovely book invites readers to take their aging seriously and honestly as a time for growing into spiritual wisdom. The authors ask us to ponder with them 25 questions that will help us to such wisdom. They reveal themselves as they strive to answer the questions they pose and in the process draw us toward developing our own spirituality of age. Readers will, as I do, thank them for their generosity and their wisdom.” (Rev. William A. Barry, S.J., author of Praying the Truth: Deepening Your Friendship with God through)“The Spirituality of Age fills an important gap, not by telling people what they ought to think about this subject, but by posing a large array of vital questions that can fuel the readers’ own imaginations. The authors know that there is no single path to the spirituality of age and that we have to discover our own unique, energizing and motivating answers. Their modeling is eloquent, thoughtful, and useful. Time spent with this book can bring great insight and direction.” (Robert C. Atchley, Ph.D., author of Spirituality and Aging)“These days we often hear the word spirituality. The spiritual search is a vital and continuous area of personal reflection for these authors. They encourage each of us to define the meaning of that word for ourselves. This book opens the door for all of us to explore our own growth, insights, inner peace, and continued learning that is calling to us as we age” (Connie Goldman, author of Who Am I Now That I’m Not Who I Was?)“All of us get older, few of us get wiser. As we search for an ‘authentic’ spiritual practice we ignore the one we were given when we were born: aging. The Spirituality of Age places you firmly on this path. This is a book to be read, but more importantly lived.” (Rabbi Rami Shapiro, author of Perennial Wisdom for the Spiritually Independent)“The authors are compassionate guides on the journey of aging. They beckon the reader to face the path ahead with honesty and courage. Through their own hard-won wisdom, they shine a light of hope for all of us who will, sooner or later, leave health, illusion, and life itself behind.” (Rabbi Dayle A. Friedman, founder of Growing Older and author of Jewish Wisdom for Growing Older)“The authors have created a masterpiece! This book is a must-read for all facing the quest for meaning and purpose in later life. With their honest, profound, and often witty point-counterpoint perspectives on 25 of the major challenges of the gift of years, this book will enrich and deepen the lives of all of its readers and will be especially helpful to those guiding older adults on the path of psycho-spiritual growth in the second half of life. I am buying copies for all of my over-50 friends for Christmas!” (Jane M. Thibault, Ph.D., clinical gerontologist and professor emerita, University of Louisville Scho)“This little book, built around questions to which each of us will have different and individual answers, emphasizes by its very structure that in our era, old age can be a time of growth and spiritual discovery, a time of fulfillment of life, rather than its dreary aftermath.” (Mary Catherine Bateson, cultural anthropologist and author of Composing a Further Life)“The authors have penned an exceptionally wise and timely book. Wrestling with the hard spiritual questions that so often disturb our later years, they dig deep for personal answers and generously encourage the reader to do the same. Get ready, you may find yourself revising everything you think about aging and in the process making peace with your own answers. Perfect for personal growth, book clubs, and classes.” (John C. Robinson, Ph.D., D.Min., psychologist, interfaith minister, and author of The Three Secrets)“To my delight, this book prompted me to ask questions of myself that I had never posed before with so much clarity. The authors each respond to these questions themselves, a unique approach that is not ponderous or heavy-handed. I found myself leaving the safety of reader-as-spectator and entering the provocation of reader-as-participant. My own spiritual inquiry began to breathe more freshly.” (Wendy Lustbader, MSW, author of Life Gets Better: The Unexpected Pleasures of Growing Older)

We begin the body of our book with a series of questions that will guide you to take a deeper look not only at where you are coming from but also the progress you’ve made over time in the direction of what we call “spiritual maturity.” What do we define as spiritual maturity? Spiritual maturity is a stage in our development that allows us to look life in the eye, without denial, intensely appreciative and deeply trusting, even as we embrace the shadows and uncertainties. Spiritual maturity is not something we attain once-and for-all. Rather, it is a process of lifelong evolution and development. Along the way we discover that even the spiritual path can be full of bumps and potholes. The good news is that as long as we keep putting one foot ahead of the other, we are making progress. Question 1 What is a psychologically and spiritually healthy vision of aging? Carol Orsborn In chapter 1 of our book, Bob and I identify what is most problematic about the dominant notions of aging. In a nutshell, it is the failure to recognize the growth opportunity in growing older, which takes into consideration both the shadow and the light. In skewing the picture toward extremes of positives and negatives, what is left out is a psychologically and spiritually healthy vision of aging that is grounded in reality and hope. Here is a simple assessment you can administer to yourself to ascertain what theories of aging have been operative in your life. To begin, I ask you to imagine an elderly woman on a park bench staring vacantly into space. What do you assume about her? If your knee-jerk reaction is that she is depressed and marginalized, and that this is a problem, you have been influenced by activity theory. If you believe she is fading away from life, a kind of graceful receding into death, but that this is okay, you have been influenced by disengagement theory. But if you are even willing to entertain the notion that she is having a transcendent experience, not disengaged or marginalized by life but, rather, embracing the whole of it in a state of ecstatic, unspoken awe, you are a gerontological pioneer. This new approach actually perceives aging as a spiritual path. For me, personally, this represents a tectonic shift in understanding. Just three years ago, when I turned sixty-three, I plummeted headfirst from romanticized notions of aging into dread and fear. Over the course of that year, dealing with the unwanted physical, social, and emotional ramifications of growing older, I was forced to confront the limitations of my ability to make things turn out the way I wanted. As it turns out, when viewed through the lens of spiritual maturity, this was a good thing. When we strip away the impositions, the fantasies, and the denial, we begin to view aging as holding the potential for activation of new, unprecedented levels of self-affirmation, meaning, and spiritual growth. Paradoxically, the more I surrender the illusion of control, the less I worry about what others think of me and the greater level of inner freedom I experience. What is a psychologically and spiritually healthy vision of aging? Bob Weber For a number of years I had been noticing a gradual loss of clear-sightedness. Despite the fact that my ophthalmologist had diagnosed the presence of cataracts, I seemed to be only semiconscious of what was actually happening. Now, as I look back on this period, I believe that this was due to a “denial” of my getting older. Only older folks need such a surgical procedure! Finally, in the fall of 2011, surgery was warranted since the cataracts had “ripened” sufficiently. After we set the dates for the surgery, the reality, both of the cataracts and of my aging, could no longer be denied. While I felt some misgiving about this, I actually found myself appreciating and even enjoying this evolution, just as I enjoyed the outcome of my surgery. Vividly, I recall the new experience of my own eyesight. I could not remember ever seeing so clearly, appreciating colors so powerfully, and I was no longer subject to the glare of lights at night that made driving dangerous. I could see more clearly in the “day light” and drive more confidently through the “dark night.” As time goes on I am realizing how alike psychological and spiritual maturity are. One of the first goals of psychotherapy is to move from a sleepy state of unconsciousness to a state of greater consciousness about what we think, how we feel, and what we do so we can live life more fully and freely. A second goal of therapy is to correct the many distortions that are fostered by the unconscious state of life. The third goal is to move to a greater freedom, to be the active agent of our lives. Fourth, we slowly but surely develop a deeper sense of our own worth and value as a human being. In their book The Psychology of Mature Spirituality, authors Polly Young-Eisendrath and Melvin E. Miller characterize mature spirituality as having three dimensions: integrity, wisdom, and transcendence. Ego integrity and wisdom are the terms Erik Erikson used to discuss the final developmental stage of life, old age. Living into this stage gives us the opportunity to integrate all the pieces of our lives, the good, the bad, and the ugly. If this goes undone, or is incompletely done, despair occurs. The fruit of this integration is wisdom, seeing the truth of life more clearly because we have lived and are living it freely and fully. This results in a transcendent perspective, not because we have bypassed the finite reality of our lives, but because we have entered it and experienced it more deeply.

Enders Although many of us boomers laugh at the thought that WE are now the senior citizens (how could that happen?), the very real challenges of growing older are not that funny: Losing loved ones; experiencing those annoying or debilitating bodily changes; feeling invisible; being talked down to by younger people; facing so many losses and changes...what to do with all this? Fortunately for us, Orsborn and Weber have grappled with the questions many of us would rather not ask and yet need to confront. The authors serve as gentle guides, nudging us to consider questions such as: "What is to become of me now that my physical health is changing?" Or - "What am I to do and what will I be now that some familiar roles will no longer be available to me?" Or - "What am I to do with the emotions I experience at the loss of family, friends, and peers?"Orsborn and Weber answer these questions themselves in a profoundly moving and intimate fashion and their openness invites ours. Their main belief and one that shines through this lovely book is that growing older, with all its vicissitudes, is an opportunity for spiritual growth, for finding meaning and purpose in your life. This is a book to experience, not just read. And it is best to do so with friends. I intend to use this as a platform for some heartfelt conversations with friends. With good food and wine...and maybe in front of a roaring fireplace - to remind us that there is still so much to be grateful for.

By Mary Beth Speer This is a significant book - a MUST read for Boomers who want to wake up, stay awake and stay conscious. I've got work to do and (inner) places to go - so helpful to have this road map.....Thank you, Bob & Carol!

Weber and Orsborn offer a remarkably candid series of reflections on their own aging process and thereby help us to inquire and embrace our own aging. The book reads like a thoughtful dinner conversation where the companionship is ample compensation for the unresolvable messiness of our lives. The spiritual approach may be described as “soft theism,” honoring the Christian and Jewish roots of the authors while remaining fresh and receptive to new insights. The reader quietly discovers that the last phase of our lives is genuinely enriched by reflecting honestly and openly on the many joys and sorrows, successes and failures, which characterize a human life.
