McClellan This book drops the reader abruptly into the action, a fairly common device when introducing new characters and settings in a novel. However, this book never stops throwing in new characters, new plotlines, new events, and so much more until you are overwhelmed and confused. The author seems to have dragged in every device ever used in approximately this time period in every mystery she has ever read. It is just too much! The novel needed a good editor to strip out the extraneous materials and subplots, or at least have the author relegate them to other books in the series. Not everything single possibility has to be dragged out in book 1! I tried to describe this book to another person when I was near the end of it, and we found ourselves laughing hysterically by the time I was halfway through. It's ridiculous. Short of a deus ex machina or an alien invasion, this book has everything: runaway servants with complex and suspicious histories who move (more or less without question) from one lead character to another to another; possible horse thievery; a hero who is confused about whom he really loves; engagements across family lines; family members (too many to list) at odds for various extremely complicated reasons; illicit affairs of both hetero- and homosexual varieties; rape and near rape; dead bodies strewn about; brothels of all sorts; beatings; blackmail; financial chicanery; bastards scattered about--you name it, it's in there. It was all just far, far too much and overwhelmed a halfway decent story. It's really too bad, because I think it could have been a pretty good book. With everything and the kitchen sink, it's a sorry mess.

Deadly Engagement (An Alec Halsey Mystery) By shinergirl A reviewer recommended this novel if the reader was a fan of Sebastian St. Cyr or Julian Krestel. Those two names were all I needed to purchase this book and I am so glad I did! Having read all of the Sebastian St. Cyr series and searching for Julian Krestel novels until they are published in Kindle format, I have been searching for similar works and happily stumbled across this wonderful novel after doing a "historical mystery" search.Twist and turns abound in this historial mystery set in the late 1700's. Alec Halsey, second son has returned after performing diplomatic work overseas only to discover that his elder brother has become betrothed to his intended. To say that his elder brother despises him is an understatement and it appear early on that that Lord Delvin will do whatever it takes to discredit, ruin and run his brother out of town. Murder abounds at a house party to celebrate Lord Delvin and Emily's engagement, where no one seems to be as they appear. Wonderful mystery, attention to detail and lush descriptions take the reader back in time. I will definately check out this author's other works. If you are looking for something new to read until the next Sebastian St. Cyr or Lady Julia Grey book is published. Take a chance and add this to your wish list. You will be glad to find another series to become enamored with. I know I am.

But this is ridiculous. The characters have zero believability or even consistency. They are one dimensional and wooden, each reduced to a single descriptive word. The hero is not appealing either; he isn't even interesting. He appears to randomly fall in love with women who are then taken away from him by his evil brother. Evidently, the hero simply rolls over and takes it, and the women are shallow witted idiots who have zero depth whatsoever. Even the romantic scenes make little sense and are boring.I bought this because it was compared to the Sebastian St Cyr series. Other than the fact that Sebastian's name is Devlin, and this family's name is Delvin, there is NOTHING like St. Cyr series here. Do. Not. Waste. Your. Money.
