Sweet Story Full of Warmth By Jamie Deacon I was unsure at first how I would get on with 'Hiding Out' since it crosses two established series: 'Checking Him Out' and 'Hiding Behind the Couch', neither of which I'm familiar with. I worried I'd be missing vital plot pieces, or would be unable to relate to the protagonists. As it turned out, however, my reservations proved groundless. From Josh and George and their straight-talking foster daughter Libby, to university students Matty and Noah, the characters drew me into their world from the outset and made me a part of their lives.Things haven't been the same for Matty since he and Noah broke up. True, they're simply postponing their relationship until after they finish university, but the strain of remaining friends when Matty wants so much more is beginning to tell. On top of this, he's a bundle of nerves over his upcoming dance show. Not only will there be talent scouts in the audience, but Noah has promised to be there, and Matty's solo will put his deepest desires on display for all to see. The question is: are he and Noah ready to face up to them?Help reveals itself from an unexpected quarter. Fifteen-year-old Libby can hardly believe her luck. After years of being shunted between foster families, she finally has a stable home with Josh and George Sandison-Morley. His interactions with the other characters are odd, charming, and perceptive, and I enjoy seeing the world through his eyes.It was a little harder to understand Matty and Noah's relationship and motivations. I obviously have some catching up to do because I want to know them both better. However, I liked the complex dynamic of balancing school and love and about being honest with self and others.I love Ms. McGowan’s smart, classy style and the way so much of the story emphasizes the psychology of the characters. Even in such a short story, all the strong personalities are evident. Another well-written, enjoyable tale.

I am giving it 4 stars although I loved it. The reason for the 4 stars is the author's style is difficult at first to figure out who is speaking or doing as she uses "he" for both Cromwell and other characters in the book. Once you get used to her style, the book flows, although a time or two I had to re-read a few sentences to figure out who the "he" was. In spite of this, it is a novel that is brilliant at times.Thomas Cromwell is often portrayed in novels as ruthless and one sided - Henry VIII's "hit" man. Cromwell was actually compassionate as well as unflinching. He was committed to his family and those he took into his household. He was faithful and loyal to the masters he served in spite of what it might cost him personally. He was actually a very brilliant man with ideas and skills that belied his lowly and abusive childhood. His rise from the son of a blacksmith to the most powerful man next to the king shows his intelligence and agile mind.If you are looking for a light & easy read during Tudor times, this book is not for you. It is, however, a masterful telling of a complex man during the 16th century and well worth the investment.

Felt like I knew him.Very helpful to read other reviews first. Knowing "he" is usually referring to Cromwell made it easier going from the beginning. I'll read this again soon.

I appreciated Patrick King's personal flair of writing, as if he was a first degree person standing right next to you having a conversation, not just reading a book. This book definitely opens your eyes, on relationships. Why or why not someone may be into you, how to proceed and maintain. I felt that this book would help with any relationship, not just trying to date someone. Because, I feel that the same rules could apply to a degree when trying to establish a friendship, if you come on like a creep people are going to back off, if you start from an interest level and build upon that then a relationship be it a relationship or friendship will come from it. I did receive this book for free in exchange for my honest and unbiased review based solely on my own personal experience with Patrick King's Science of Attraction. I would recommend anyone to read this book as it will definitely open the mind to why or how sometimes things just don't go the way you plan on them going.

Something I really enjoyed about this book is that it isn't preachy By OceanWave Something I really enjoyed about this book is that it isn't preachy, rather set in a conversational tone. This book explains how to feel a little more at ease when talking to the opposite sex, and confidence really does attract interest. There are a few spots in this book that made me giggle, I like when the author speaks candidly about a situation or subject matter. I am a bit awkward at times when communicating with people in general, so this book definitely gave me points to think about and try to improve on. This review is written based on my unbiased opinion.

It goes into detail on different things that we each look for in creating a lasting relationship. Having access to this book some 20+ years ago might have saved me from a divorce or two. Though I'd have liked to have read more on the pup and his old master, and the time frame this story is in. It was great to see how the recovery went about with the two of them. Worth the money spent,get it you'll love it. Would love to see more on these two as they start their lives together. Would also love to see more books on the club and it's other members interacting in and outside the club.

Grey Poor plot and weak characters - could have been a lot more interesting and less predictable with this premiss, and could have been made a lot more believable too. So much potentail, yet... In the end it felt okay, something you can read as long as you don't have high expectations.

So when I read the blurb about this book I thought it looked interesting and thought I would give it a try. I get there are different kinks in the BDSM lifestyle. But as I got to the end of this book I came to realize this one was not for me. I feel that as the story went on the plot started really predictable and poor. Not one that I will read again.

First of all the main character Cassie has escaped from an extremely abusive marriage. Because she had run away from home with this man her parents did not approve of and did not use her college scholarship she has lost touch with her mother and father, who have since died and her 2 sisters who still live in the northwest.There are so many mistakes in here where the family has lost each other with no contact and little if no communication. Cassie is too proud to explain her circumstances and so she and her daughter live with little money in a tiny apartment. Everyone is hurt, angry and frustrated. The storyline pulls the reader into what is a good and interesting format. Chapters present what is happening to Cassie and what she is thinking and striving for and then her 2 sisters' stories are also told where we see their version of the situation.Romance books do seem to have some things in common...that electric first touch where the person has never experienced this kind of feeling for another. Most readers will also be able to predict where most of the plot is headed- including the 3 types of marital dilemmas in the pages.Still there are truths here about battered and abused wives and lessons to be learned about communication in families and with those you care about. The book also makes a good case for Habitat for Humanity and the work that it does.This is an interesting romance with more complex characters and problems than one might be used to, but all is done in a satisfying storyline that will keep the reader turning the pages.

Griffith Debbie Macomber has another good novel to add to your collection with "Last One Home", which introduces her readers to new characters. I'm not sure if this will be the first book in a series, or if it'll be a stand alone novel. Either way, it's a book worth reading with elements that surprised me. Cassie, the main character, is a woman trying to rebuild her life following an abusive marriage to a man her family didn't approve of; the marriage (and now ex husband, Duke) caused a serious rift in her family. Cassie and her daughter, Aimee, lived 3000+ miles away from Cassie's family when they were finally able to escape Duke's violence, but by then Cassie's father had died, her mother was ill, and her sisters Karen and Nichole didn't welcome contact with her."Last One Home" deals with abuse in a realistic and non-judgmental way. It also deals with deep misunderstandings in families, the awkwardness that reconnecting often brings, and the slow, steady, healing power of love and forgiveness. While the book is a romance--Steve Brody makes an interesting love interest for Cassie, especially in the early chapters--this isn't the tale of a white knight riding in on his powerful steed to save a damsel in distress. Arguably, there is an expected amount of distress in Cassie's life as she juggles a full time job, single parenthood, volunteer work with Habitat For Humanity in order to give her daughter a more permanent home, and the tenuous, fragile steps towards reconnecting with her sisters. The difference is the novel focuses more on those aspects than the romance with Steve. It's refreshing.This is the kind of easy reading, happy-ending novel a reader can enjoy over a rainy weekend or while on vacation. I liked it, but I've been a Macomber fan for many years. Your mileage may vary. I definitely recommend it when life is too taxing for more intense books. Sometimes you want a book that isn't going to keep you reading through the night... one that's as relaxing to snuggle up with as a quilted throw and cup of tea.

It is about a woman making it on her own with a child after escaping an abusive relationship. It also speaks highly of Habitat for Humanity, I learned a lot I didn't know about them. Did you know to qualify for a house you have to volunteer 500 hours? So homeowners have an investment in their homes, and many keep volunteering, what a great organization! This book is also about reaching out to your family after a long separation. And finally about finding yourself and learning to like and love again. It made me laugh, it made me cry, I learned, and I was entertained, that is what a good read is all about.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. An Excellent Short Story Introduction to Cactus Creek! By eLynda My favorite genre is historical romance, but I confess I don’t read many Westerns. I’m not sure why; I love Janette Oke’s books and the Little House series by Laura Ingalls Wilder, too, but somehow it’s not my “go-to” choice when I’m looking for an engrossing read. I still enjoy them, and have several authors I read within this sub-genre, but when choosing an unfamiliar author, I will often pick a different time and place.When this short story appeared, however, by a publisher I trust, I thought I’d try it. I am so glad I did! From the first pages, I was drawn into the tale and read right on through in two quick sittings. I found the main character to be realistic, and the setting of Cactus Creek and the minor characters who populate it to be interesting.I was surprised to find a lot to love in this short story, including the fantastic historical detail like the Sheriff protecting his town from the wranglers who would pass through as they took cattle to market in Kansas. For whatever reason, I never really thought about that aspect of a cattle drive, always picturing the wranglers as the good guys protecting the cattle rather than considering that there might have been some unscrupulous ones who left damage behind as they moved on.The other thing I really enjoyed was Obadiah’s integrity in his job as Sheriff. His insistence on doing right despite the cost, even when others urge the easier path, was encouraging. Given headlines we see in today’s news, I have to say it was a refreshing read. I also liked the relationship we get to see with his son, Ben, and how he’s raising his boys to be men committed to the truth and justice.This short story is fascinating in its own right, but it also serves as an introduction to Vetsch’s upcoming novel, The Cactus Creek Challenge, and I am already hooked on the story enough to look forward to reading it and continuing the story, with a better understanding of the new Sheriff, the youngest son of the lawman we read about in this short story. Try this author and see if you might like to visit Cactus Creek yourself—I’m thinking it will be a read many historical fiction fans will enjoy!

I would sit with him on Saturday morning and watch the sheriff take down bad guys. My dad would have liked this story . I felt like I was sitting in front of the TV watching a western unfold.The book may be short, but it was filled with such riveting characters and excitement till the end.What a thrill it was for Ben to see his dad, the sheriff stand up to a gang and become a hero with fierce and cunning plans. The Dickerson Gang, well known for their violence were coming to get their brother out of jail . What they didn't know was a man with strong values and a commitment to uphold the law would stand in the way of their plan.I loved this fast paced and whitty style of writing. Thank you for taking me back to the days of watching Saturday morning westerns . The book is filled with the feel of the old west and ends with you wanting to follow Ben, the son as he begins his journey. . His dad was a legend . Will Ben be able to live up to that standard ? Can he show the town how brave , and strong he is as he steps into the shoes of sheriff of Cactus Creek. ? The answers await readers in "The Cactus Creek Challenge."

But it's the perfect length for a quick break in between chores. The writing style was crisp and clear--enough details to make us feel we are there, but not so much as would drag down the thrust of this short story. Good little twist at the end. No foul language, and a very vague reference to a saloon girl (Sheriff said she didn't like what she did for a living). One murder, and moderate violence, which was to be expected given the title, but no terrible details. For the Christian element, the Sheriff said he prayed that he would lead his boys right. That was it. He knew trouble was coming, but he didn't seek the Lord's protection, wisdom, or grace. Even when in the midst of difficulty, he didn't offer up a desperate plea for help. I suppose he considered himself "self-sufficient" in most areas. Entertaining read, but it didn't make me want to be a better person. A touch more of Obadiah's faith in God, portrayed in a way that would encourage me to seek God more, would have earned this story another star. Ending on a positive, I must say again that I really enjoyed the writing style!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Another Superb Historical Novel By Philip Ross Gordon This another extraordinary work by Hillary Mantel. Like its predecessor, "Wolf Hall" it is written from an unusually strict "third Person" POV, but Mantel has mastered it, and when necessary tells you which "he" is speaking. The perspective again is from the view of Cromwell, and Mantel continues to make him a primarily sympathetic character, which I don't recall has ever been done before. Her characterizations are rich and deep, perhaps the deepest I have ever read when you consider that such major historical entities as Anne Boleyn are actually peripheral characters, yet they seem full fleshed out. Again, highly recommended.

Love the history, the way the characters were written to come alive and have contemporary relevance. Love the descriptions of life in the 1400's: food, clothing, personal hygiene, arranged marriages, affairs, raising children, education, art, music, city and countryside, home decor, government, the king in relationship to his people, court life, the value of life, England in relation to other countries and principalities in Europe. Just marvelous.

BETRAYED BY HER FATHER LIES SHE GOT A SECOND CHANCE AT LOVE AFTER MANY YEARS By Dorothy Hendrickson Gloria was being courted by Simone then he left to take care of his cousins business and his cousin until he died. He wrote to Gloria everyday and less frequently when she never answered his letters. Her father even ran him off the property three times and threatened him the last time. She never gave up her love for him and never married. She is now in her early thirties and designs women's clinical thing in a factory for English women. Her mother owns a shop repairing clothes. You must read this book to see just how much unhappiness her father has caused these two people. Her father died two years ago and her mother even thou she did not agree with what her husband she has it come clean to tell her about the letters or the things her father did to Simone.

I usually don't read Amish stories, because I'm really into other genres so much and when I just get into something new it seems then they're over so fast, but this one really held my interest. I felt like I got to know the characters, and I liked them and cared what happened to them. I highly recommend this book. I think every one should read this book then they would understand exactly what I mean - great Amish story.

It is not until many, many years later and after his death, that his deeds and the truth come out. His daughter had never stopped loving the lad and never married.Her younger sister discovers the letters hidden in a box and thus, opens Pandora' s box, so to say. Many things are in the way, but can these two cross the "great divide"?A wonderful story that I would definitely recommend reading. I am looking forward to the next in the line.

Review This is one of those books that everybody has heard about but few people these days have actually read. It deserves to be read - not simply because it is the basis for symbols so deeply ingrained in American culture that we no longer realize their source, nor because it is one of the bestselling books of all time. This is a book that changed history. Harriet Beecher Stowe was appalled by slavery, and she took one of the few options open to nineteenth century women who wanted to affect public opinion: she wrote a novel, a huge, enthralling narrative that claimed the heart, soul, and politics of pre-Civil War Americans. It is unabashed propaganda and overtly moralistic, an attempt to make whites - North and South - see slaves as mothers, fathers, and people with (Christian) souls. In a time when women might see the majority of their children die, Harriet Beecher Stowe portrays beautiful Eliza fleeing slavery to protect her son. In a time when many whites claimed slavery had "good effects" on blacks, Uncle Tom's Cabin paints pictures of three plantations, each worse than the other, where even the best plantation leaves a slave at the mercy of fate or debt. By twentieth-century standards, her propaganda verges on melodrama, and it is clear that even while arguing for the abolition of slavery she did not rise above her own racism. 358 of 374 people found the following review helpful. Read it and judge for yourself By A Customer Uncle Tom's cabin is frequently criticized by people who have never read the work, myself included. I decided I finally needed to read it and judge it for myself. And I have to say, that for all its shortcomings (and it does have them), it is really a remarkable book. The standout characteristics of this book are the narrative drive (it's a very exciting, hard to put down book), the vivid characters (I don't know what other reviewers were reading, but I found the characters extremely vivid and mostly believable - exceptions to follow), the sprawling cast, the several completely different worlds that were masterfully portrayed, and the strong female characters in the book. The portrayal of slavery and its effects on families and on individuals is gut-wrenching - when Uncle Tom has to leave his family, and when Eliza may lose little Harry, one feels utterly desolate.As for flaws, yes, Mrs. Stowe does sermonize a fair bit, and her sentences and pronouncements can be smug. Yes, if you're not a Christian, you may find all her Christian references a bit much. (But the majority of her readers claimed to be Christian, and it was her appeal to the spirit of Christ that was her most powerful tug at the emotions of her readers). Yes, she still had some stereotypical views of African-Americans (frankly, I think most people have stereotypical views of races other than their own, they just don't state them as clearly today). But in her time, she went far beyond the efforts of most of her contemporaries to both see and portray her African-American brothers and sisters are equal to her. The best way she did this was in her multi-dimensional portrayal of her Negro characters -- they are, in fact, more believable and more diverse than her white characters. Yes, at times her portrayal of Little Eva and Uncle Tom is overdone at times -- they are a little cardboard in places -- but both, Uncle Tom especially, are overall believable, and very inspiring. The rest of the Negro characters - George Harris, Eliza, Topsy, Cassie, Emmeline, Chloe, Jane and Sara, Mammy, Alphonse, Prue, and others, span the whole spectrum of humanity -- they are vivid and real.The comments of a previous reviewer that the book actually justifies slavery (because "it says it's no worse than capitalism") and that it shows that Christianity defends slavery are due to sloppy reading of the book. No one reading the book could possibly come to the conclusion that it does anything but condemn slavery in the strongest and most indubitable terms. This was the point of the book. The aside about capitalism was just that, an aside on the evils of capitalism. It did not and does not negate the attack on slavery. Secondly, another major point of the book is that TRUE Christianity does not and could not ever support slavery. Stowe points out the Biblical references used to claim that Christianity defended slavery merely to show how the Bible can be misused by those who wish to defend their own indefensible viewpoint. It's ridiculous to say that the book "shows that Christianity supported slavery". It shows that some misguided preachers abused certain Bible passages and ignored other ones to support their view of slavery.There is an overlay of the tired "Victorian women's novel" to this piece - that must be granted. For literary perfection, it will never take its place beside Tolstoy, Dickens and Austen. But it is a piece entirely of its own category. Nothing before or after it has been anything like it, and it IS a great, if flawed, novel. I highly recommend it. I give it 5 stars despite its flaws because it's utterly unique, and its greatness is in some ways is related to its flaws.

169 of 178 people found the following review helpful. Yet another surprised reader By A Customer I too was surprised by "Uncle Tom's Cabin." I'd expected a poorly written melodrama with (at best) a tepid commitment to abolition and a strong undercurrent of racism. I was wrong. As a novel, I consider it to be better than many of its rough contemporaries (including "A Tale of Two Cities," "Vanity Fair," and "Sartor Resartus"). As an attack on slavery, it is uncompromising, well informed, logically sophisticated, and morally unassailable. It's also exciting, educational, and often funny.The book has flaws, of course. The quality of the writing is variable, as it is in the works of many greater talents than Stowe. Herman Melville is one of my favorite writers, but I'd be hard-pressed to defend some of his sentences--or even some of his books--on purely literary grounds! There are indeed sentimental passages in "UTC." So what? There are plenty in Hawthorne, Dickens, Ruskin, and the Brontes, too...and lord knows our age has its own garish pieties. There are also a couple (only a couple!) of unfortunate remarks on the "childlike" character of slaves, but nothing so offensive as to render suspect Stowe's passionate belief that blacks are equal to whites in the eyes of God and must not be enslaved. (She also says that differences between blacks and whites do not result from a difference in innate ability, and argues that a white person raised to be a slave would show all the characteristics of one). By contrast, Plato wrote reams in defense of slavery and racialism, and yet people who point this out are considered spoilsports, if not philistines.The reviewer who claimed to have learned from Stowe that "slavery is no worse than capitalism" has totally misunderstood Stowe, who says that slavery is AS terrible as capitalism. To be precise, Stowe equates the horrors of wage slavery under Victorian Britain's capitalist system of production with those of chattel slavery in the American South. Her definition of capitalism agrees perfectly with that of Karl Marx, who was a pro-abolitionist correspondent for the New York Daily Tribune (and was familiar enough with Stowe to have written a piece on her). Marx said that true capitalism is defined by "the annihilation of self-earned private property; in other words, the expropriation of the labourer." Marx did not consider America a capitalist state, because American workers had at least theoretical upward mobility and could acquire property. This was not at all true of the British working class when "Uncle Tom's Cabin" was written, as Stowe well knew. And there was nothing idiosyncratic about her opinion; contemporaneous books such as "The White Slaves of England" made the same connection between American chattel slavery and British wage slavery. The cruelty of both systems is what led Stowe to claim in an essay that the Civil War was not merely a war against slavery, but "a war for the rights of the working class of society as against the usurpation of privileged aristocracies."As for the claim that Stowe says Christianity justifies slavery, this is either willful misreading or wishful thinking...she says the opposite so many times, and at such length, that to remove every expression of it would probably shorten the book by half (to the delight, apparently, of most of our nation's English students).Not sure who to believe? If you're interested enough in "Uncle Tom's Cabin" to have slogged through this meandering review, why not read it and see for yourself what Stowe does, and doesn't, say?

263 of 281 people found the following review helpful. I finally read this excellent book! By CCC Since this was a free Kindle download, I was prompted to finally read this classic book. It is much better than I expected it would be! Easy to read, well-written, and eye-opening. I noticed another reviewer said the download version was hard to read, but I did not find that to be a problem at all. One nice thing about the Kindle is the ability to download so many classics for free. I doubt I would go to the library and check out Uncle Tom's Cabin, but I would and did read it as a free Kindle download. I am glad that I did!

Murder Mystery Thriller + Somber Tales in Suburbia By Miss Bonnie My rating: 3.5 of 5 stars‘I hauled my body along, through the trees, over the fence, toward what I knew–knew because it was there, all of it, in that piercing mechanical wail, knew because it was prophesied in my dream, as elusive as a scent, a shadow, a ghost, knew because it was written in the very blood flowing through my veins—would be as bad as it gets.’Grace and Nica both attend Chandler Academy, a private boarding school in Hartford, Connecticut where their parents are also teachers. Grace was always the quiet sister the resided within the shadow of her younger and wilder sister Nica until a bullet took her life and left Grace suddenly alone. She is troubled by not only her absence, the realization on how much she relied upon her sister but also a sense of bewilderment about who she is supposed to be without her. Grace develops a pill habit that quickly spirals out of control causing her to drop out of college and remain at home. After Nica’s death is pinned on a student who recently committed suicide, Grace doesn’t believe it to be true. After she finds evidence that he couldn’t possibly have killed her she determines it’s up to her to find out who really did.Dark Rooms is a debut novel and while it had some pacing issues and the occasional hiccup, it was quite the engrossing tale. As far as the previously mentioned hiccups, the investigation itself which spans the majority of the novel felt generally ‘off’. When Grace would discover a clue she would either connect the dots in a way that left me completely confounded or would often jump to the strangest and most outlandish conclusions. The one saving grace is that the main character recognized exactly what she was doing:‘I’ve been pretending I know, careening from conviction to conviction like a human pinball, setting off every light and spark and bell, absolutely positive about one thing, then absolutely positive about another. But, the truth is, the only thing I’m absolutely positive about is that I don’t know anything at all.’It put a new spin on her outlandish conclusions: she was desperate and grasping at straws to find the answers to her sisters death that was plaguing her with uneasiness. There was also another (spoilery) reason for her desperation to complete the investigation and when you took a step back and really looked at what she was going through it ended up making at least a modicum of sense in the madness. The secrets and reasoning behind Nica’s death were dark enough to live up to the title but the additions regarding Nica being her mothers muse in her photography and the lines that were constantly being crossed with her practically stalking her to take candid photos felt a bit gratuitous in the end. This story was a complete knockout as far as the writing is concerned and is definitely worth a read for that alone.Dark Rooms is a mixture of somber tales in suburbia, a murder/mystery thriller and a coming of age novel. Comparisons to The Secret History, Gillian Flynn’s Sharp Objects and even Megan Abbott are what initially intrigued me about this novel. The similarities to Sharp Objects is fairly accurate with the story of the seemingly normal teenage girls and the dark family secrets that inevitably change their very makeup but didn’t completely live up to that comparison. All in all, big name comparisons generally always do the book a disservice and while Dark Rooms isn’t a perfect clone, fans of those novels will definitely find some thrill within these pages as I certainly did.

Unlikable Characters, Disappointing Story/Writing By LadyJingly ***SPOILERS*** While this book has an incredible beginning, it immediately begins to disappoint in the pages following the opener. There are a lot of tortured and overlong twists and turns with laughably tidy (yet unsatisfying) resolutions; there are a lot of vomiting scenes (like, a lot); a lot of the main character telling us "I'm tired" in various phrasing; and a lot of frustrating character decisions. I feel like this was a novel that wanted to include a lot of edgy subjects--drugs, sex, rape, incest, murder---while being fairly tame. Which is pretty lame of a novel to do.The plot kept me guessing, but the ending was ultimately disappointing. I also found most of the characters profoundly unlikable and uninteresting, especially Grace. Grace came off in turns as whiny, apathetic, cold, snotty, and self-loathing. I don't understand why I'm supposed to care about her, other than the fact her sister died. And her choice of partner at the end is just...gross. Sorry. Seriously, Lili Anolik? I'm supposed to be sympathizing with the guy who is not only a rapist, but a rapist imagining the victim's dead sister??? Mmmmkay. Sorry, there's only so much a rapist can use the old, "But I was soooo saaaaaddddd" excuse before it gets ridiculous.And Nica, the dead sister, isn't exactly sympathetic, either. Most of the characters are written to be shallow, rich, snotty, privileged kids trying to move around in a Bret Easton Ellis novel from 1985 and failing hard. I love how we are supposed to "sympathize" with Grace and Nica somehow because they are slightly lower high-class than the aristocratic high-class students they're friends with. And apparently Damon, who seems to be a regular, middle-class person is framed as being from "the wrong side of the tracks." He lives in a two-story house with his grandmother, graduated from an expensive boarding school, and is on a baseball scholarship to University of Connecticut. Am I supposed to believe that just because he's Latino he's some kind of exotic bad-boy?Anyway, I read it to the end, but mostly because I just wanted to get it over with. I was really disappointed, as I heard great things and the opening chapter is amazing. I kept waiting for the writing to return to that level, but it never did.

It's beautifully written with compelling characters and a perfectly twisted storyline that is guaranteed to keep readers engrossed. It's a debut novel that reads like the work of a master.

About the Author

Margaret Truman, the only child of President Harry Truman (33rd President of the United States), was born in Independence, Missouri and spent her early years between Missouri and Washington, DC, where her father was a senator. Upon the death of Franklin Roosevelt, Truman assumed the presidency and the young Margaret moved to the White House. From there it was on to George Washington University and a Bachelors of Arts degree in History. After college, she pursued her interest and talent in singing and from the late 1940s into the early 1950s she performed around the world, as well as on radio and television shows. Her singing career received mixed reviews, but nonetheless was followed closely by the media in her day. Truman remained in the public eye when she went on to become one of the first women to be part of the then fledgling morning news and entertainment shows, paired with Mike Wallace on NBC’s show Monitor in 1955. She began her writing career in 1956 with her first book, Souvenir, Margaret Truman's Own Story. The autobiography was followed by several works of nonfiction including books about her father, her mother, Bess Truman, and several books focusing on the history of the White House and its previous inhabitants, including former pets of White House families. In 1980, with the release of Murder in the White House, Truman began her foray into the world of fiction, which would continue for the rest of her life. Her Capital Crimes series remains popular with a whole new generation of readers who are intrigued by behind-the-scenes pictures of the political process. A prolific writer in both the fiction and nonfiction genres, Truman has written a total of thirty-five books and is today a truly popular American writer. Margaret Truman died in 2008 at the age of 83.

Dastardly Deeds at the Smithsonian By George Webster, Ph.D., Margaret Truman writes mysteries that capitalize on her terrific knowledge of Washington, DC, and impress me by moving right along to a solution. The plots can be a bit intricate, but that's part of the fun. In this story, Dr. Lewis Tunney, a historian, is murdered spectacularly on the balcony above the famous Focault pendulum in the National Museum of American History, during a gala attended by the Vice President of the United States. Captain Mac Hanrahan of the Washington police has the task, filled with political pressure, of solving the murder. He finds that Tunney had learned a devastating secret, and was murdered before he could reveal it. Hanrahan's task is complicated by the arrival in the United States of strong-willed Heather McBean, the Scottish fiance of Tunney. She sets out independently to find who murdered Tunney. But the murderer proceeds to kill others who might know Tunney's secret, and Heather finds herself stalked by the murderer. It all makes an enjoyable story.

Branson The dialogue in this book was somewhat better than that in Murder in the Supreme Court, but the characters were flat, the exposition was blaring, and the collusion required for the plot to work was pretty unbelievable, even for fiction.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. DISAPPOINTED! By Mac Blair This is the first book I have read by Truman and guess it will be my last. I was very disappointed in it. I had heard such rave reviews. The book was very confusing to me. To many people involved and to much detail about places, to many murders and all by same people, in to many countries. I stayed lost a big part of the time. That may be due to my lack of smarts, but I was still lost. Sorry. Mrs. Truman.
