Winners of the Man Booker Prize and hugely successful stage plays in London's West End and on Broadway, Wolf Hall and Bring Up the Bodies bring history to life for a whole new audience having now been adapted into a six-part television series by the BBC and PBS Masterpiece.

Hilary Mantel's Thomas Cromwell novels are the most formidable literary achievements of recent times. Wolf Hall begins in England in 1527. England is a heartbeat from disaster. If the king dies without a male heir, the country could be destroyed by civil war. Henry VIII wants to annul his marriage of twenty years and marry Anne Boleyn. The pope and most of Europe oppose him. Into this impasse steps Thomas Cromwell: a wholly original man, a charmer and a bully, both idealist and opportunist, master of deadly intrigue, and implacable in his ambition.

Bring Up the Bodies unlocks the darkly glittering court of Henry VIII, where Thomas Cromwell is now chief minister. Henry is disenchanted with Anne Boleyn and has fixed his eye on the demure Jane Seymour. Anne has failed to give England an heir and rumors of her infidelity creep through the court. Over a few terrifying weeks, to dislodge her from her throne, Cromwell ensnares Anne in a web of conspiracy—acting to save his life, serve his king and secure his position. But from the bloody theater of the queen's final days, no one will emerge unscathed.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A Masterful Telling of a Complex Man By littlebugstitches There are reviews of 1 to 5 stars for this book. I am giving it 4 stars although I loved it. The reason for the 4 stars is the author's style is difficult at first to figure out who is speaking or doing as she uses "he" for both Cromwell and other characters in the book. Once you get used to her style, the book flows, although a time or two I had to re-read a few sentences to figure out who the "he" was. In spite of this, it is a novel that is brilliant at times.Thomas Cromwell is often portrayed in novels as ruthless and one sided - Henry VIII's "hit" man. Cromwell was actually compassionate as well as unflinching. He was committed to his family and those he took into his household. He was faithful and loyal to the masters he served in spite of what it might cost him personally. He was actually a very brilliant man with ideas and skills that belied his lowly and abusive childhood. His rise from the son of a blacksmith to the most powerful man next to the king shows his intelligence and agile mind.If you are looking for a light & easy read during Tudor times, this book is not for you. It is, however, a masterful telling of a complex man during the 16th century and well worth the investment.

Felt like I knew him.Very helpful to read other reviews first. Knowing "he" is usually referring to Cromwell made it easier going from the beginning. I'll read this again soon.
