It almost seemed as if it was rushed. There were so many misspelled words, and there were many instances where the grammar was not correct. I could go on and on about what I disliked about this book. The first two both had their share of misspellings and grammar problems but they both kept me intrigued, wanting more. When I finished this one, I actually asked myself if I really paid money for it. The potential was there but the author did not capitalize on it!!!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. It was okay By Eh The way it ended was just okay. I didn't like when the author had Nicole say, that since she was giving birth, and she had braids at the time. She mentioned she didn't have a perm, and she didn't want to look a " hot mess". Like being natural meant being a hot mess. I didn't like that. Nothing wrong with natural hair. We shouldn't feel like we should have to confirm to European style to be accepted. NATURAL IS GORGOUS!!! You as the author love yourself, love our people in all our beautiful naturalness!!!!!

It should have stopped with part 2. I wasn't feeling all the poetry and verses. That took away from the story which was very short. If anything, it could have been the epilogue in part 2. My recommendation is save your money because as far as I'm concerned the series ended in part 2. You won't miss much.

Light, humorous read By garfsgirl This is the second book in the Sisters of Mercy Flats series (a clean re-write of an earlier series by Lori Copeland). It can be read as a stand-alone since the series premise is well-summarized in this book. I would recommend reading the first book, Sisters of Mercy Flats, if you want to get more in-depth background about the McDougal sisters and read the scene in which the 3 sisters are separated. During an attack by Comanche warriors, Anne-Marie is rescued by a Crow warrior, Creed. All she wants to do is return to Mercy Flats to reunite with her sisters. However, Creed has to complete his mission involving a gold shipment before he can return Anne-Marie. I really liked the heroine even though she is quite a handful. She had a lot of spunk and the men had to rely on her to think of a way out of tricky situations. Creed was harder to understand because he didn't say much for the first half of the book. There were several humorous moments in the story, like when Anne-Marie thought she was going to die or whenever Creed's friend, Quincy, was around to banter with Anne-Marie. Some of the plans that Anne-Marie devised to get out of scrapes were a little far-fetched but moved the story along. The bumbling villains were stereotypical (the leader Cortes liked to talk about himself in the third-person) but provided comic relief. The romance between Anne-Marie and Creed was not very developed in the beginning since there did not seem to be much interaction but it ramped up in the second half of the book. Spiritually, Anne-Marie learned that God did not want her to live a life of deception even if it was for a good cause and she had to trust Him for her future. Overall, this was a light read that, although predictable, was still humorous and enjoyable.* I received a free copy from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Creed seemed very sullen and serious most of the time and he never really seemed to open up. AnneMarie was quite the opposite, but she felt kind of flighty. Most of the time I just didn't feel like the characters felt quite as developed as they could be to make this novel really shine.Storyline: The concept of this series of books is so fun! This particular story definitely had me intrigued. The characters definitely found themselves in one tough spot after another. With so much trouble, it made this book move along quite quickly. My Thoughts: There were times that I enjoyed the book, but there were definitely a couple of things I did not enjoy as much. The relationship between Creed and AnneMarie never really feels like it develops too much further than initial physical attraction. Second, the comments about faith and the times we see a character pray don't feel like they come through in the story quite as naturally as they normally should. The book definitely had it's good moments overall, and I did find some enjoyment within the pages. The way that these books are set up, I don't think they need to be read in any particular order. I understand that the first book has some opening scenes that are relevant to the following books in the series. I read this one without having read the first and I don't think it hindered my ability to enjoy the story.**I received a copy of this book from Harvest House and NetGalley in exchange for my honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.**

Having a Native American as the Hero is a uniquely different approach used sparingly in Christian fiction. My Heart Stood Still is a fast-paced story with major plot events occurring every few chapters––there's little time to catch your breath. Anne-Marie is a stubborn, I-can-do-everything heroine. Creed is a mysterious hero with secrets to hide. And Quincy, Creed's African-American best friend, is a sweet and humorous side-kick. These characters comprise an interesting team and it was fun following their wild quest to return Anne-Marie safely home while trying to deliver a cache of stolen gold to the American authorities.Although this story was a fun and light read, Anne-Marie could be annoying at times with her tendency to rebel and her I-can-do-everything attitude. I enjoy realistic stories with deep spiritual truths woven throughout and My Heart Stood Still depicted events that were, at times, unrealistic and silly. In addition, Cortes is a very cliche Hispanic villain. As an aside, because Anne-Marie and Creed were instructed by nuns and a catholic priest respectively, the spiritual themes have a slant towards Catholic doctrine.I did enjoy, however, the detailed and well-written prose. The setting came to life and I could easily picture the surroundings in my mind. The romantic thread kept me in the shadows until the end and Anne-Marie's decision to renounce deception––even if its use was for a good cause––constituted great progress in her spiritual journey. While My Heart Stood Still is not my favorite story, it is a fun, light read about a con-artist falling in love with a Native American and the challenges they face along the way––which just might be the kind of story you're looking for. I give My Heart Stood Still three out of five stars.

“The authors make this unassuming, most studious woman come pulsing to life. . . . Notorious RBG may be a playful project, but it asks to be read seriously. . . . That I responded so personally to it is a testimony to [its] storytelling and panache.”— Jennifer Senior, New York Times

Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg never asked for fame—she has only tried to make the world a little better and a little freer.

But nearly a half-century into her career, something funny happened to the octogenarian: she won the internet. Across America, people who weren’t even born when Ginsburg first made her name as a feminist pioneer are tattooing themselves with her face, setting her famously searing dissents to music, and making viral videos in tribute.

Notorious RBG, inspired by the Tumblr that amused the Justice herself and brought to you by its founder and an award-winning feminist journalist, is more than just a love letter. It draws on intimate access to Ginsburg's family members, close friends, colleagues, and clerks, as well an interview with the Justice herself. An original hybrid of reported narrative, annotated dissents, rare archival photos and documents, and illustrations, the book tells a never-before-told story of an unusual and transformative woman who transcends generational divides. As the country struggles with the unfinished business of gender equality and civil rights, Ginsburg stands as a testament to how far we can come with a little chutzpah.

Review “The authors make this unassuming, most studious woman come pulsing to life....’Notorious RBG’ may be a playful project, but it asks to be read seriously...That I responded so personally to it is a testimony to [its] storytelling and panache.” (Jennifer Senior, New York Times)Carmon and Knizhnik write powerfully about the progression of Ginsburg’s legal career. In particular, they make vivid the development of her trademark arguments ... In her fierce honesty, resolute realness, and, yes, innate sense of style (those collars!), Ginsburg emerges as a cultural icon worthy of her own fanbase (Kate Tuttle, The Boston Globe)“What a wonderful book: The annotated dissents! The knockout photos! Why she likes to write through the night! The litany of big cases she won as a lawyer, and how she picked them! How she made Bill Clinton cry! Notorious RBG is a laugh-out-loud joy to read.” (Rachel Maddow)“A deeply original mashup of pop culture and serious scholarship. I plan to give a copy to both of my daughters.” (Gilbert King, Pulitzer Prize winning author of Devil in the Grove)“This breezy, fun and thoughtful take on the life of the Justice explains exactly why a new generation created and embraced the Cult of Ginsburg.” (Jeffrey Toobin, author of The Oath and The Nine)“This rigorously reported book shines a new light on the groundbreaking cases Ginsburg litigated challenging gender stereotypes.” (Louise Melling, Deputy Legal Director, ACLU)“If you admired RBG before, Carmon and Knizhnik will make you fall in love with her, not only as a feminist hero but a human being.” (Vogue)“Clark Kent had Superman. Ruth Bader Ginsburg has Notorious R.B.G…. Carmon and Knizhnik have turned R.B.G’s robe into a cape.” (New York Times Book Review)

Sutter I don't think someone from my generation would have the imagination to design a book this way, or to include a photo feature about a Supreme Court Justice's "swag." But fundamentally this is a wonderful book about the difference an individual can make. The book's breezy style has a deeper and more serious significance, as well.I was touched by many things in this book, not only the courage of Justice Ginsburg's opinions, or the loving handwritten note from her dying husband, but even by the photos illustrating her close friendship with Justice Scalia, one of her ideological opposites - it's rare to see such a mensh in these times. The format is terrifically creative for this sort of subject: the NY Times reviewer aptly described it as being "as if a scrapbook and the Talmud decided to have a baby." The latter comes in especially for the way the book's margins are used for commenting on everything -- not just for the obvious connections to a Justice who is Jewish. (Apropos of that, though, one thing did puzzle me: the recipe for pork in milk at the back. Breaking two of the Jewish religion's food taboos at once -- isn't that a little gangsta? Was that the idea, or is the whole thing a joke? And actually, one other thing: the publisher's subject classification on the back cover is "Fiction." Aside from the recipe, I hope not.)I now live in Japan and teach comparative constitutional law there. Pretty much no one, including most law professors, can name the justices of the Japan Supreme Court, who are chosen for their anonymity, their conformity to a certain social background, and their timidity of thought. And throughout its nearly 70-year existence, the JSC has always upheld laws and regulations that limit civil rights. One reason I got this book was to be able to show my students how completely different the relationship between a country's Supreme Court and its citizens can be. In most countries of the world, a book like this would be inconceivable. While I'm not saying that many other Justices deserve such a tribute, this book should be a great reminder for Americans how lucky you are not only to have Justice Ginsburg, but also to be capable of such affectionate engagement with your government.

By upstate bill This is a remarkable portrait of a warrior for human rights, equal rights and human dignity.Justice Ginsburg is proof you don't have to be tall to be a giant. When we look back I believe her appointmentto the Court by Bill Clinton will be seen as one of his greatest accomplishments. If you want to find out what the Court is up to in any given decision, read Justice Ginsburg.Don't be fooled by the calm quiet demeanor. She is a ferocious advocate for the best that is in us as a peopleand a country.I could not put this book down. The authors should be very proud of this fabulous book.If you go to "righteous" in the dictionary , you will find Justice Ginsburg's picture.Give this book to your sons and daughters this holiday season. You will be glad you did.If I could give more than five stars I would. Ten would not be enough.

Her mother told her that 'getting angry was a waste of your own time' and she carried that wisdom with her to the Supreme Court. Everything in her life has been done to the best of her ability and that includes her workout ethics (which are still ongoing). Just imagine giving up waterskiing in your late 70's!A fascinating read which includes her educational background as well as her early work with the ACLU. Some of her Women's Rights Projects are detailed and one that caught my attention was the AF Nurse case in 1970. CAPT Strich was pregnant and refused to quit or get an abortion. Pregnant women were also given a general discharge instead of an honorable one. The book also delves into her time on the Supreme Court and covers that portion in depth including the influence of social media. Many things struck me when reading this book. She referred to her marriage to Marty as her 'life partner'. It was an incredibly rich marriage for all of the right reasons and the note he left for her on June 17, 2010 was powerful and poignant. The second item that really caught my attention was the manner in which she values the work of her secretaries. Any of her clerks must value them as she does or they will answer to her. This is a true 'people person'. The tradition that occurs in the robing room and the look around her chambers are treasured glimpses into both areas. At some point in the future, I will make RBG's favorite Marty Ginsburg's Recipe for pork loin braised in milk. Sounds delicious to me.'Notorious RBG' illustrates that a little chutzpah goes a long way. An entertaining and educational read which gave me more information on the inner workings of our Supreme Court..Most highly recommended.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Lots of Action By seasons of grace This book starts out action packed. Laurel is FBI, working on an elderly insurance fraud scam case. After discovering an encrypted e-mail, in which the encryption matches the type a felon from a previous undercover case used, Laurel has a suspect - the man she put away five years prior.Meanwhile, Wilmington, the felon she arrested is still serving time in prison. He now claims to have found Christianity, and is seeking parole based on good behavior.Officer Daniel Hilton's elderly grandparents, one of which suffers from Alheizmers, have been scammed at the location where they reside during the day while he is working. He is doing some side work trying to figure out who the scammer and get to the bottom of it.With a little help from FBI, Wilmington is released early, pending his help with the elderly scam investigation. Together these three begin their undercover assignment. The question being; Can they trust each other? Has Wilmington really turned a new leaf? Can Daniel and Laurel keep their growing feelings in check so their cover isn't blown? Will the real criminals trust them enough to reveal the silent partner?I have mixed feelings about this book. Although, I enjoyed the plot, the action, and the romance, I felt like some of the details in the book did not add up well, and some of it was not very believable. I hate to give away the story, because it really was good, so am not going to expound on the cons. I do want to mention though that I would recommend the book. I especially enjoyed the character of Abby, the grandmother. She was a godly mentor, and friend to Laurel. Some of the self-condemnation she and her husband suffered due to a prodigal son, as well as, how they dealt with it, is also an interesting and worthy part of the story. This is the second book in the Houston FBI series, but can be easily read individually. I read the first book, which I thoroughly enjoyed by the way, and the characters are not the same in both books.I received this book from Tyndale Blog Network in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own.

A Great Mystery with a Serious Message By Karen When some of the most vulnerable, the elderly with dementia, become the object of a scam seeking to rob them and their heirs of their life savings, Laurel Everston of the FBI wants to catch the perpetrator. There are very few leads, but she does recognize some code which seems to lead back five years to the criminal she nailed in an undercover assignment. Is it possible he is involved from jail? She is determined to find out. Morton Wilmington claims to have become a Christian in prison and is anxious to live for God. He also is very anxious to get out of prison. Will he be able to help Laurel solve the case or is he wanting to make good on his threat to kill her? Daniel Hilton of the Houston Police Department wants this crime solved, as well. His elderly grandparents were victims and now their lives could be in danger as some of the victims also seem to be dying of causes that may not be natural. As Daniel, Laurel, and Morton work together, they are all fighting demons of their past and no one is convinced that he can trust the other members of the team.As with all of DiAnn Mills’ books, this is a fast paced thriller. Many of her books are not only good mysteries, but they also are tackling an important issue. In this case, she focuses on the lives of those with Alzheimer’s disease, their care, and the lives of those who love and care for them. It was written with great sympathy and dignity. Her characters are well developed. No one can help but fall in love with the feisty octogenarian, Abby, as she seeks to care for the love of her life, Earl. It was a great suspense thriller, but there was also much food for thought.I received this from the Book Club Network in exchange for my honest opinion.

FBI Agent & Cop Go After Scammers Targeting Elderly By Conny Title: Double CrossAuthor: DiAnn MillsPublisher: Tyndale FictionISBN: 978-1-4143-8994-3“Her personal mission was twofold – stop the elderly fraud and prove Wilmington should stay behind bars. She was honored to go undercover again, but working with Wilmington would take all of her acting skills,” Laurel determines in DiAnn Mills’s novel, Double Cross. The second book of the FBI: Houston series, this four hundred page paperback targets those who enjoy Christian romantic suspense. With no profanity, topics of abuse, murder, and death may not be appropriate for immature readers. After the epilogue, the author’s note, a teaser for the next book in the series, a dozen discussion questions, and the author’s biography end the book.In this contemporary fiction set in Houston, Texas, FBI Agent Laurel Evertson gave up on God at ten years old when her parents were murdered. After her partner dies in a shoot-out she believes she caused, she feels empty, lonely, and unworthy of love.Throwing herself into her job, she ardently tries to track down those responsible for scamming the elderly, especially if dementia is involved where they unknowingly lose thousands of dollars. When Houston Police Officer Daniel Hilton’s grandparents get hustled by the scam, he offers his help to the FBI, wanted or not. With his spunky, sleuthing grandmother constantly watching out, he tries to find how his grandfather with memory issues was caught up in a fraudulent life insurance plan.As the plot thickens, Laurel goes undercover again when Morton Wilmington, the powerful man involved in organized crime that she put in jail years ago, is released and knows who is behind the elder abuse contrivances. Laurel despises working with the parolee again, even if he recently claims to have become a Christian.Although romantically predictable, the story starts off slow and has twists and turns with many characters, superfluous flirtations, and some unrealistic scenarios. The highpoint of the book shows how one must reach a breaking point to come to know God personally. Not one of Mills best tales, this one still keeps the reader guessing who-done-it.Winner of two Christy Awards, this best-selling author has published more than fifty-five books. Founding board member of the American Christian Fiction Writers, she speaks to various groups and teaches writing workshops nationwide. She lives in Texas with her husband. Thanks to the Book Club Network and the author for furnishing this complimentary book in exchange for a review based on the reader’s opinion.

When the world ends, the heart’s compass of several people has them headed in directions they may have never traveled otherwise. Each book in the series is a stand-alone, novella-length story, but is written within the same fictional setting in which the Earth has just been struck with several massive solar flares. All modern technology has been rendered inoperable. Cars, computers, city infrastructure, phones – all gone in an instant and without warning. In the days directly following the end of the modern world, people must learn to depend on each other, and on their heart’s compass, if they hope to survive.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. nice By Furio Post apocalyptic tales are never a jolly good read for me as the implications of a sudden indent in civilisation's course are all too clear to be looked at with rose-tinted glasses. The author of this M/M short story skips over the worst traits of humankind which are bound to surface in situations like that and concentrates instead on the feelings of her characters, adding a nice dollup of humour and not a little amount of hope. The first half of her story is good, the second pays the price of emotional transitions that make sense in themselves but are a little compressed and needed more pages and time.In the end we have a pleasant if not entirely believable short story with a satisfying HEA.

A New York Times Notable Book of 2015From the writer of the hugely acclaimed Love, Nina comes a sharply funny debut novel about a gloriously eccentric family. Soon after her parents' separation, nine-year-old Lizzie Vogel moves with her siblings and newly single mother to a tiny village in the English countryside, where the new neighbors are horrified by their unorthodox ways and fatherless household. Lizzie's theatrical mother only invites more gossip by spending her days drinking whiskey, popping pills, and writing plays. The one way to fit in, the children decide, will be to find themselves a new man at the helm. The first novel from a remarkably gifted writer with a voice all her own, MAN AT THE HELM is a hilarious and occasionally heart-breaking portrait of childhood in an unconventional family.

Man at the Helm: A Novel, by Nina Stibbe

Review "Man at the Helm is a winner- a brilliant find....It is full, free, outlandish. And I can't remember a book that made me laugh more. [Stibbe] doesn't take anything seriously. Or rather, she does, and yet her eye and ear for the absurd never desert her- they are part of who she is."―The Guardian"Some of the most perceptive writing I've read about relationships in a while....this book is very, very funny. Stibbe has a fine eye for absurdity, and her writing has an unforced charm."―The Independent"[A] joyous read, full of wit and charm . . . I am already longing for Nina Stibbe's next book."―The Observer"an impressive first novel, a combination of P. G. Wodehouse pacing and the eccentricity of Gerald Durrell's My Family and Other Animals (1956). An extraordinarily well-written, deeply satisfying read about an unusual, highly entertaining group of people."― Booklist"While Man at the Helm is hilarious and heartfelt, it also offers a poignant peek into a not-so-distant time when women's choices were limited and their dependence on men profound. Based on Stibbe's childhood, Man at the Helm is a beguiling, often wickedly funny look at an unusual family trying to find its place in a conventional world. ― Bookpage"Nina Stibbe's Man at the Helm is straight-up hilarious, a brilliant collage of a family in glorious ruin. Stibbe's wry, sly wit propels the novel forward at breakneck speed, but don't be fooled: underneath all the exuberance beats a surprisingly melancholy heart."―Lauren Fox, Author of Still Life with Husband and Friends Like Us"Stibbe's astute, deadpan charm is impossible to resist."―Kim Hubbard, People"This densely populated coming-of-age story (for both mother and children) has retained and even expanded on Stibbe's signature antic charm...It's not too much of a stretch to conclude that Man at the Helm, with its jauntily matter-of-fact social satire, wouldn't be out of place on the same shelf as Cold Comfort Farm and I Capture the Castle. ―Alida Becker, The New York Times Book Review"Lizzie's scheme to find a suitable match for her [mother] sparkles with humor as British as mincemeat pie." ―Entertainment Weekly"impossible not to love...a glorious, hilarious and touching picture of an unforgettably eccentric family...a novel that while brilliantly comedic is also a heartfelt celebration of the love that can flourish in even the most seemingly dysfunctional family."―Amy Goodfellow Wagner, Examiner.com"Ms. Stibbe's writerly charms and her sneakily deep observations about romantic connection are on display throughout...'Man at the Helm' is densely peppered with funny lines, but even more striking is the sustained energy of the writing. In almost all the space between jokes, there remains a witty atmosphere, a playful effect sentence by sentence."―John Williams, The New York Times"Funny and engaging...I simply hugged myself with joy reading this book, for the tale it tells, which is funny, painful, and ultimately happy, and above all for the voice, which is perfection."―Katherine A. Powers, The Christian Science Monitor PRAISE FOR LOVE, NINA: "I adored this book, and I could quote from it forever. It's real, odd, life-affirming, sharp, loving...and I can't remember the last time I laughed out loud so frequently while reading."―Nick Hornby, The Believer"Breezy, sophisticated, hilarious, rude, and aching with sweetness: Love, Nina might be the most charming book I've ever read."―Maria Semple, author of Where'd You Go, Bernadette"These letters are winning from the start...we simply like being in Ms. Stibbe's company."―Dwight Garner, The New York Times"You'll find yourself laughing out loud but also touched by the book's depiction of family as it should be: people bound not just by blood but by shared affinities, humor and unfailing interest in hearing the answer to the question, 'How was your day?'"―Kim Hubbard, People"I must MOST EARNESTLY recommend Love, Nina by Nina Stibbe. It's the most piss-funny thing I've read all year. I can't remember a book since Adrian Mole that so brilliantly, drily nailed day-to-day life in BRILLIANT, faux-naive prose."―Caitlin Moran, author of How to Build a Girl"I have never laughed so hard reading a book. Nina Stibbe's recollections of life as a London nanny are both hilarious and heartwarming."―J. Courtney Sullivan, author of Maine and The Engagementsenchanting. It's one of the funniest¿and oddest¿books I've read in a long time.... [Stibbe's letters] are perceptive and droll, and provide a glimpse into the domestic life of a fascinating literary family."―Moira Hodgson, The Wall Street Journal

By Sue Kichenside Fans of word-of-mouth bestseller Love, Nina: A Nanny Writes Home (and I count myself among them) will no doubt love this novel by Nina Stibbe so I know I'm swimming against the tide here when I say I didn't. I found it twee. It is narrated by 10-year old Lizzie who veers - as you'd expect from a bright youngster - between knowing and naïve. Here, Stibbe's distinctive voice, so appealing in Love Nina, is trying just that little bit too hard. The book opens with Mrs Vogel and her three children moving to an unwelcoming Leicestershire village after the desertion of Mr Vogel. Lizzie and her 11-year old sister put the villagers' frostiness down to their mother's divorced status and resolve to find her a new husband to 'take the helm'.The author clearly wishes to portray Mrs Vogel as fey and whimsy when in fact she is nothing of the sort; she is one of the most dangerously irresponsible mothers I have ever come across in fiction. Addicted to whisky and sedatives, falling for unsuitable men, slovenly in the extreme, financially reckless, she fails on every level to look after her three children. When the youngest (seven) gets lost at a fairground while he is in the care of his older sisters, the mother's lack of concern really becomes intolerable. I didn't know whether to find this character merely unbelievable or bordering on barking mad; either way I couldn't cope with her maternal negligence. Whilst the children appear to be resilient, I felt too sorry for them to enjoy this book though I did like how it ended.

Family values By nose in book At first I thought I was reading an updated I Capture the Castle, and in a way I guess I was-charming children who try to rescue their drifting, unhappy parents. But this book is funnier and (to me) much more touching. Other readers have mentioned that having been a single mother during the 70s gives an extra resonance to the misadventures of the characters. I was one, and it does. But the pleasure I got from the book was because of the excellent writing and the very funny and compelling story.

Very disappointing, did not deliver what I had hoped By Maxine (Booklover Catlady) When I read the blurb for this book I was super excited to read it, I really thought I was on to a winner with this book. I was expecting to be laughing out loud and smiling all the way through it. Instead I was groaning with boredom and wanting it all to end quickly and painlessly. Needless to say I felt this book was a real letdown. So little Lizzie and her siblings move to a small village, you know the ones, where everyone knows your business? Their mother gains a reputation simply by being divorced (shock horror) but also because she is a bit, ahem, well....friendly to many local chaps, come in for a cup of coffee and stay the night type of thing. The book is told purely from Lizzie's perspective, I found this got very boring after a while. The characters have no opportunity to shine either, I found them all very flat and one dimensional. This book should have been amazing, but it just wasn't.The two sisters take it upon themselves to write a list of potential new suitors for the role of "Man at the Helm" or in other words, a man for their mother to help the family claw back some reputation and make their mother happy. They also take it upon themselves to set up some meetings between their mother and the suitors, which does have some lightly funny moments amongst it on the way. There are some nice moments, even a few slightly funny moments in the book, but not enough to salvage it. By the middle of the book it was just dragging on with a load of waffle and minor events that I was nearly asleep reading it. I don't think I would have missed much.Their mother is useless, she drinks (alcohol) from early in the day, says she is "not suited to household duties" so therefore their house is pigsty and the girls have to pick up the slack and also help with their younger brother who hardly speaks at all. It's not really explained why either. The girls worry about social services finding out and them being taken away, hence their passion to find a man to sort things out for them with their mother. It's got some sad tones underneath really, things like the girls traveling to London on trains on their own (aged nine and twelve) to get their mother's pills from the only doctor in the country that will prescribe them. It's not stated what the pills are but good hints indicate they are something like Valium. Tragedy for these girls, playing the parental role almost in role reversal. It just doesn't have anything spectacular going on, it's paced quite slow and that does not alter at all and after a while it's a bit like the same story on repeat. It's certainly not as funny as indicated it might be, which is a shame as I was looking forward to that. Overall it was a very average and "okay" read in my opinion. It has some moments that are great but the majority is as bland as watered down custard.Love this one, or dislike this one, that's up to you now. It did not float my boat or ring my bell. I think I could have skipped to the end chapter and missing NOTHING in the middle.
