Light, humorous read By garfsgirl This is the second book in the Sisters of Mercy Flats series (a clean re-write of an earlier series by Lori Copeland). It can be read as a stand-alone since the series premise is well-summarized in this book. I would recommend reading the first book, Sisters of Mercy Flats, if you want to get more in-depth background about the McDougal sisters and read the scene in which the 3 sisters are separated. During an attack by Comanche warriors, Anne-Marie is rescued by a Crow warrior, Creed. All she wants to do is return to Mercy Flats to reunite with her sisters. However, Creed has to complete his mission involving a gold shipment before he can return Anne-Marie. I really liked the heroine even though she is quite a handful. She had a lot of spunk and the men had to rely on her to think of a way out of tricky situations. Creed was harder to understand because he didn't say much for the first half of the book. There were several humorous moments in the story, like when Anne-Marie thought she was going to die or whenever Creed's friend, Quincy, was around to banter with Anne-Marie. Some of the plans that Anne-Marie devised to get out of scrapes were a little far-fetched but moved the story along. The bumbling villains were stereotypical (the leader Cortes liked to talk about himself in the third-person) but provided comic relief. The romance between Anne-Marie and Creed was not very developed in the beginning since there did not seem to be much interaction but it ramped up in the second half of the book. Spiritually, Anne-Marie learned that God did not want her to live a life of deception even if it was for a good cause and she had to trust Him for her future. Overall, this was a light read that, although predictable, was still humorous and enjoyable.* I received a free copy from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Creed seemed very sullen and serious most of the time and he never really seemed to open up. AnneMarie was quite the opposite, but she felt kind of flighty. Most of the time I just didn't feel like the characters felt quite as developed as they could be to make this novel really shine.Storyline: The concept of this series of books is so fun! This particular story definitely had me intrigued. The characters definitely found themselves in one tough spot after another. With so much trouble, it made this book move along quite quickly. My Thoughts: There were times that I enjoyed the book, but there were definitely a couple of things I did not enjoy as much. The relationship between Creed and AnneMarie never really feels like it develops too much further than initial physical attraction. Second, the comments about faith and the times we see a character pray don't feel like they come through in the story quite as naturally as they normally should. The book definitely had it's good moments overall, and I did find some enjoyment within the pages. The way that these books are set up, I don't think they need to be read in any particular order. I understand that the first book has some opening scenes that are relevant to the following books in the series. I read this one without having read the first and I don't think it hindered my ability to enjoy the story.**I received a copy of this book from Harvest House and NetGalley in exchange for my honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.**

Having a Native American as the Hero is a uniquely different approach used sparingly in Christian fiction. My Heart Stood Still is a fast-paced story with major plot events occurring every few chapters––there's little time to catch your breath. Anne-Marie is a stubborn, I-can-do-everything heroine. Creed is a mysterious hero with secrets to hide. And Quincy, Creed's African-American best friend, is a sweet and humorous side-kick. These characters comprise an interesting team and it was fun following their wild quest to return Anne-Marie safely home while trying to deliver a cache of stolen gold to the American authorities.Although this story was a fun and light read, Anne-Marie could be annoying at times with her tendency to rebel and her I-can-do-everything attitude. I enjoy realistic stories with deep spiritual truths woven throughout and My Heart Stood Still depicted events that were, at times, unrealistic and silly. In addition, Cortes is a very cliche Hispanic villain. As an aside, because Anne-Marie and Creed were instructed by nuns and a catholic priest respectively, the spiritual themes have a slant towards Catholic doctrine.I did enjoy, however, the detailed and well-written prose. The setting came to life and I could easily picture the surroundings in my mind. The romantic thread kept me in the shadows until the end and Anne-Marie's decision to renounce deception––even if its use was for a good cause––constituted great progress in her spiritual journey. While My Heart Stood Still is not my favorite story, it is a fun, light read about a con-artist falling in love with a Native American and the challenges they face along the way––which just might be the kind of story you're looking for. I give My Heart Stood Still three out of five stars.
