"Grant, Lord, that I may know myself that I may know thee." ―Augustine Much is said in Christian circles about knowing God. But Christians throughout the ages have agreed that there cannot be deep knowledge of God without deep knowledge of the self. Discerning your true self is inextricably related to discerning God's purposes for you. Paradoxically, the more you become like Christ, the more you become authentically yourself. In this profound exploration of Christian identity, psychologist and spiritual director David G. Benner illuminates the spirituality of self-discovery. He exposes the false selves that you may hide behind and calls you to discover the true self that emerges from your uniqueness in Christ. Freeing you from illusions about yourself, Benner shows that self-understanding leads to the fulfillment of your God-given destiny and vocation. Rest assured, you need not try to be someone you are not. But you will deepen your experience of God through discovering the gift of being yourself. This expanded edition, one of three titles in The Spiritual Journey trilogy, includes a new epilogue and an experiential guide with questions for individual reflection or group discussion.

The Gift of Being Yourself: The Sacred Call to Self-Discovery (Spiritual Journey), by David G. Benner

From Publishers Weekly In contrast to other books filled with drive-through pop psychology and sound-bite spirituality, Benner, a psychologist and spiritual director, offers an impressively deep and challenging introduction to Christian self-discovery in a little more than 100 pages. The foundational premise is that true knowledge of God and true knowledge of oneself are inextricably intertwined. For those who view such an approach as simply an accommodation to our culture's obsession with self, Benner provides a multitude of quotes from historic, respected theologians such as Augustine and John Calvin. He offers a clear and practical outline for those seeking to begin the lifelong process of knowing God and knowing themselves in an authentic way. As a gift to Christian counselors everywhere, Benner explains the difference between authentic self-discovery and most psychological approaches. Without mentioning names, he uses the stories of "fallen" Christian leaders to illustrate how some Christians' well-intentioned avoidance of self-discovery can become a deadly snare. His discussion of accepting our flaws and sins as a necessary step to transformation is a model of lucidity. Although self-knowledge is the subject, it becomes clear that transformation is the ultimate goal both of this book and of the journey it invites readers to begin. Review "Rarely do I suggest a book in spiritual direction with the exception of the sacred Scriptures. However, The Gift of Being Yourself I would offer to directees with enthusiasm. David Benner has shown us where life experience, personal insight and prayer meet: in God. I highly recommend it, especially for people beginning in spiritual direction." (David I. Donovan, S.J., Provincial Assistant for Formation, New England Province of the Society of Jesus)"As he has done many times before, David Benner guides us to a place of wisdom and devotion with this beautiful book. With empathy and insight he demonstrates that the two great tasks of life―knowing God and knowing ourselves―converge into a single adventure as we are drawn into the arms of our loving God." (Mark R. McMinn, Rech Professor of Psychology, Wheaton College, and author of Why Sin Matters)"Slowly we are unpacking the full implications of incarnation. David Benner does exactly the same in this excellent book, using good theology, psychology and spiritual practice to make the profound obvious. This is the work of all good teachers." (Richard Rohr, OFM, Center for Action and Contemplation, Albuquerque, New Mexico)"David Benner is a keen student of both God and human personhood. It is a rare kind of book that combines wisdom about faith and understanding about the self. This is that kind of book." (John Ortberg, author, senior pastor, Menlo Park Presbyterian Church, Menlo Park, California)"David Benner's The Gift of Being Yourself is the best treatment of the journey to becoming one's true self that I have ever read. I began reading the book as a favor to David; I finished it in one four-hour sitting as a favor to me. Drawing from his wisdom as a psychotherapist and spiritual director, insights from Scripture, and his own self and God discoveries, David gently describes the great disparity between the false self that most of us have become and the self-in-Christ that we are intended to be. I have never been so challenged and warmly inspired to receive the gift of being my true self." (Gary W. Moon, director, Martin Family Institute and Dallas Willard Center for Spiritual Formation, Westmont College, author of Apprenticeship with Jesus)"Wise, compassionate and accessible, David Benner's The Gift of Being Yourself is truly a gift to the dedicated seeker. The author draws on his professional experience as a psychologist and his own lifelong vocation as a Christian. The result is a book that felicitously weaves together the insights of psychology and Christian spirituality." (Margaret Guenther, author of Holy Listening: The Art of Spiritual Direction)"In contrast to other books filled with drive-through pop psychology and sound-bite spirituality, Benner, a psychologist and spiritual director, offers an impressively deep and challenging introduction to Christian self-discovery in a little more than 100 pages. . . . He offers a clear and practical outline for those seeking to begin the lifelong process of knowing God and knowing themselves in an authentic way. . . . His discussion of accepting our flaws and sins as a necessary step to transformation is a model of lucidity. Although self-knowledge is the subject, it becomes clear that transformation is the ultimate goal both of this book and of the journey it invites readers to begin." (Publishers Weekly (starred review), January 26, 2004)"As a teacher of spiritual directors, I require my students to read The Gift of Being Yourself first. Understanding the false self and receiving the true self is essential for knowing God and one's truest desire, and it's a prerequisite for discerning this story in the lives of others. This new edition encourages readers to stop and consider the implications for themselves through questions and through examples from Benner's own life and the experiences of others. This calls for a careful consideration of Benner's premise as a lived reality, and not just as theory or ideas. I will highly recommend this edition for students of spiritual direction and formation." (Helen Cepero, spiritual director, author of Christ-Shaped Character and Journaling as a Spiritual Practice)"A small, engaging book on knowing God and knowing self. The Gift of Being Yourself gets beneath the crust of ego and past persona and behind image to the truth of you. Here is a pathway to discover and receive the beloved unrepeatable self that God designed you to be." (Adele Calhoun, author of Spiritual Disciplines Handbook)

Benner drives home the profound yet paradoxically simple nature of our relationship to self and others through our relationship with the Divine. In "The Gift of Being Yourself" Benner outlines practical ways to improve your relationship with the Divine and through relationship with the Divine begin to understand our true self and calling. I read this after reading Benner's "Surrender to Love." The two go hand-in-hand, but I recommend reading "The Gift of Being Yourself" before reading "Surrender to Love" (just my opinion).

Insightful and Helpful Guide to a Journey of Biblical Self-Discovery By Todd Hudnall "The Gift of Being Yourself" is an exceptional investigation of the subject of self-identity. The author, David Benner, is able to masterfully bridge the Biblical paradox of death-to-self and self-discovery. He writes, "For if we find our true self we find God, and if we find God, we find our most authentic self." We don't find our true self by seeking self-identity but by seeking God.Benner sees our identity not as a creation but as a discovery and as a gift from God. By discovering and living our uniqueness, we fulfill our destiny. The purpose of the book is to assist people in the transformational journey of becoming their true self in Christ and living out the vocation that this involves. To do so we must know ourselves as known by God. In knowing ourselves and knowing God we can experience the gift of being ourselves. The author contends that through self-deception, we tend to confuse our true self with some ideal self we wish we were. We adopt mask that portray us differently than who we authentically are. Self-discovery is not to escape reality but to commit to it. We must decide to accept what is really there and accept ourselves as we are and accept God as He is, not how we would want each to be. Spiritual transformation does not result from fixing our problems. Our sin nature is not self-fixable. Instead, spiritual transformation results from turning to God in the midst of our problems and meeting God just as we are.It starts by coming to know God. If we come to know God, we come to know love, and to love God is to know God. It's not simply knowing about God, but it is personally meeting God in Jesus. To do so Benner recommends Spirit-guided meditation of the Gospels and meeting God in the events of life through prayerfully reviewing each day. Benner puts a high value on solitude throughout the process of self-discovery. He gives instruction and insights into carrying out these disciplines. All of us tend to reject our true self that is created in the likeness of God. Instead we chose a way independent of God that is our false self. This false-self is created out of placing my value in what I have, what I do and what people think of me, rather than in God's loving acceptance of me. If we do not want to live in bondage to our false-self we must be prepared to be other than our image of our self. We must allow God to embrace us just the way we really are.Coming to know and trust God's love is a lifelong process. It begins by letting God know our desire to experience His perfect love. We must allow God to accept us just as we are and enable us to accept ourselves. In doing this we dare to allow God access to the dark parts of our soul. Self-acceptance always precedes genuine self-surrender and self-transformation.Following a discovery of our authentic self, Benner then moves into a discovery of our vocation. Our vocation is always a response to a Divine call to take our place in the Kingdom of God. It always involves the care of God's creation and people, moving us to humility, love, self-sacrifice and stewardship. From Luke 4 Benner wonderfully explains that Jesus' understanding of vocation came out of wrestling with God, himself and the devil in the solitude of the wilderness."The Gift of Being Yourself" is a thoughtful, practical, and easy read. It is not the definitive textbook for self-discovery nor does it fully answer all of the questions. Yet, the small investment of time you spend reading the book may provide just what you've needed to begin the journey of self-discovery through an encounter with God.

24 of 25 people found the following review helpful. This book speaks to the heart By Dianne On its own, discovering ourself could be quite dangerous. David Benner puts the importance of knowing one's self in proper perspective. It's not "who I am," but "who I am in Christ." Who I am in Christ is a beloved creation of God, fraught with sinfulness but loved nevertheless. Knowing this is the starting point for allowing God, trusting God to have his will in my life. It is at the same time reassuring and humbling. It does not go against the teachings of Christ and Paul when they said we must deny ourselves, and be crucified with Christ. If I don't accept who I am in Christ, how can I possibly deny myself?

From the New York Times bestselling author of Belong to Me, Love Walked In, and Falling Together comes a captivating novel about friendship, family, second chances, and the redemptive power of love.

In all her life, Eustacia “Taisy” Cleary has given her heart to only three men: her first love, Ben Ransom; her twin brother, Marcus; and Wilson Cleary—professor, inventor, philanderer, self-made millionaire, brilliant man, breathtaking jerk: her father.

Seventeen years ago, Wilson ditched his first family for Caroline, a beautiful young sculptor. In all that time, Taisy’s family has seen Wilson, Caroline, and their daughter, Willow, only once.

Why then, is Wilson calling Taisy now, inviting her for an extended visit, encouraging her to meet her pretty sister—a teenager who views her with jealousy, mistrust, and grudging admiration? Why, now, does Wilson want Taisy to help him write his memoir?

Told in alternating voices—Taisy’s strong, unsparing observations and Willow’s naive, heartbreakingly earnest yearnings—The Precious One is an unforgettable novel of family secrets, lost love, and dangerous obsession, a captivating tale with the deep characterization, piercing emotional resonance, and heartfelt insight that are the hallmarks of Marisa de los Santos’s beloved works.

By Michelle M Nist I was one of the lucky readers that got an advanced copy of this book, so I have been waiting eagerly to review it here today!I have been a huge fan of Marisa de los Santos since I picked up Belong to Me at a book sale and fell head over heels with language again. I had almost forgotten how beautiful words can be woven together. I am so thankful for Marisa for reminding me again with her newest story.I read The Precious One in less than 24 hours...but before I reviewed it, I went back and re-read it, savoring every nuance, phrase and idea. It is my favorite of the ones she has written so far! You will fall in love with the characters - even if you want to pick sides at the beginning of the story. Like the characters, you find you are caring and opening yourself more than you thought you ever would. Many other reviews will explain more about the story, so if you want a summary, you can look to those, either here or on goodreads.com. I will conclude by saying that I am sure it was challenging to write a story from the viewpoints of characters of two different ages. Yet, I could open to any chapter without looking and know who was speaking - the voices were so different and unique. Marisa de los Santos has outdone herself with this one (again!) and I just hope she is spending the long winter months curled up with her puppies writing the next one. (rumor has it she is indeed! Yay!)

Written in 2 voices similar to Love Walked In By Roxanne I wanted to take my time writing this review to do the book justice and to think about all of the things Marisa and The Precious One gave me. I was given an Advanced Reader's Edition which arrived Christmas Eve ( I know... A gift right?) and it was indeed. Even with all of the craziness of Christmas I couldn't put it down. Written in 2 voices similar to Love Walked In, one older sister Taisy and one younger, a teen of 16 Willow, it flipped back and forth between them softly and effortlessly. Willow was my favorite character and I loved her from the minute I met her. The story itself doesn't disappoint and flies by in sad and tragic ways right up until the ending, which you think is all coming together in a nice neat happy package, and then it doesn't.The book is full of soft and gentle words and sentences that are warm and cover you like a blanket. Marisa de los Santos's writing fills my heart in this way. "I remember being hot, hot in that rosy cheeked, hair stuck to your forehead, baked bread way that you get in winter, when you're 6". Or, "I wondered what it would be like to do something so well, to carry that around in your body like a secret, every day, all the time." There are so many quotes that I loved but you have to read the book to really appreciate them. For anyone who hasn't read any other of Marisa de los Santos's books, read them all. They are all wonderful. The Precious One comes out in March 2015. Mark the day and buy yourself a gift to read, enjoy and pass on to someone you love. I guarantee you will be reading them all because "Yeah well it's true that once you've had wonder, it's hard to get used to not having it." 5 Stars!! xxoo

Instead, you'll get the picture of this character driven story through my descriptions of the characters and writing. Told from the first person perspectives of thirty-five-year-old Taisey and her sixteen-year-old sister Willow, aka THE PRECIOUS ONE, these half-sisters were raised by two very different, but the same father, Wilson.Wilson is the epitome of an over-the-top, one dimensional father who dotes on his youngest but emotionally abuses and abandons Taisey and her twin brother. He's cold, controlling and cruel. While I'm sure a person like this could exist, his lack of redeeming qualities made him more cartoonish than believable. I also couldn't understand why his seemingly normal wife put up with the way he treated his twins and their daughter.Willow and Taisey's chapters had virtually the same voice, and at times I had trouble distinguishing whose chapter as whose. Marisa de los Santos can write beautiful prose, unfortunately Willow's voice, which was supposed to be intellectual, was so over the top I can't picture any teenager speaking with the words and sentences as she did. Though she was jealous of Taisey and immature, she was easy to sympathize with due to her suffocating sheltered upbringing. I could see she was drawn in by the teacher/predator because of her relationship with Wilson and her lack of social skills and experiences.I loved Taisey, her childlike wish for her father's approval, her fierce devotion to family, her willingness to forgive.THE PRECIOUS ONE felt overwritten to the point of pretentiousness. I enjoyed de los Santos's previous books much more than this one. This is not a plot driven novel, though the plots of who was Wilson, Willow/teacher/boyfriend and Taisey's teenage boyfriend did have some interest, the Why Wilson was so awful never made me believe the terrible incident (and his father's punishment was horrific) caused him to become the way he was. The Archie story made me uncomfortable as an animal lover.I got THE PRECIOUS ONE on a Kindle Daily Deal for $1.99 and I wouldn't recommend paying more than that.

I made the cheesy eggs and hashbrowns, the Hawaiian kielbasa and the enchilada soup. The recipes are very easy to follow and I love that since you are using a crockpot - it's pretty set and go. The recipes can be improvised if you realize you are out of something but still want to whip something delicious up. Whether you always follow a recipe exactly or like tweaking it you'll enjoy this book. I have a 4.5qt cooker. I haven't even scratched the surface of things I want to try in this book. I'm excited to give more recipes a try.

I also notice that the author must be a casual gluten avoider, because she uses a lot of soy sauce, teriyaki sauce, and Mrs. Dash, all of which contain gluten, unless you look specifically for GF versions. She makes no mention of doing so, and while most educated GF shoppers understand this is necessary, most GF cookbooks I've seen clearly indicate that tamari or GF soy sauce should be used, just for example. Also, and this is purely a personal preference, I found the book heavy on the sides and desserts. I use my slow cooker for entrees to make life easier due to a hectic work schedule. So I prefer a book with lots of main dish recipes. I don't really need a suggestion for how to cook frozen ears of corn with a garlic butter sauce (butter and granulated garlic, BTW) in the slow cooker, when that would only take about 10 minutes on the stove. But, you may like lots of suggestions for side dishes and cakes, so to each her own. This just wasn't my thing.

The start of the book could be considered a synopsis of a "slow cooker for dummies" manual, telling all you need to know about sizes, liners and temperatures, too! As a mommy-to-be working full time, it is so hard to not only make meals but to make healthy, tasty ones too! Not to mention, I'm not much of a "top chef." The "casseroles and bakes" breakfast selections are my favorite recipes of all. I love breakfast food and these recipes are by far delicious, nutritious and filling! Plus, there is typically very little prep work involved and most things you'll have around the house if you're already doing gluten-free. The descriptions are clever and you salivate just reading them. Directions are easy enough for even me to follow. The only thing that could make this cook book better would be for the author Hope to hand deliver warm ready made dishes to my door daily, since the hardest part is waiting to enjoy the delicious meal!

Hand-drawn interesting and eclectic designs printed on both sides of page By iiiireader [[VIDEOID:f8ac3d0f992cfe3c7f0508feb8b6b8de]]This is an smaller format book of interesting designs which are hand-drawn as opposed to computer generated. I like this size for carrying with me in my purse, along with a small set of colored pencils – that way I can color while I am out and about. Most of the designs have intricate details. The designs are an interesting range from motifs to owls to fish to flowers and everything in between. The pages are printed on both sides of the page. The paper is white and is not perforated. The paper weight is good but all of my gel pens and markers bleed through. You can put a piece of heavy weight paper below the page you are working on but the backside of the page will still have ink seep through. Some of the designs are printed wholly within a page and a good number of them span across two sheets. The binding is glued and not sewn which may make it a little more difficult to take apart. Most of the designs merge into the binding, so coloring into the edges is not easy. I was able to bend the binding backwards sufficient for the book to be fairly flat, which will help in getting into the area near the bound edge.

By Mary A I really like this because I can carry it in my bag will a small set of glitter pens and have something enjoyable to do if I am stuck waiting somewhere! This was the first small coloring book I got. I would like to see more designs vs pics with greenery as I am using up my green pens faster than the other colors!

Only thing is I wish the pages were only one sided as my markers bleed through and I can't color the back side. But using my gel pens, colored pencils and crayons are perfect, live and learn.

The New York Times bestselling author of Mrs. Lincoln's Dressmaker and Mrs. Lincoln's Rival imagines the inner life of Julia Grant, beloved as a Civil War general’s wife and the First Lady, yet who grappled with a profound and complex relationship with the slave who was her namesake—until she forged a proud identity of her own.In 1844, Missouri belle Julia Dent met dazzling horseman Lieutenant Ulysses S Grant. Four years passed before their parents permitted them to wed, and the groom’s abolitionist family refused to attend the ceremony.Since childhood, Julia owned as a slave another Julia, known as Jule. Jule guarded her mistress’s closely held twin secrets: She had perilously poor vision but was gifted with prophetic sight. So it was that Jule became Julia’s eyes to the world. And what a world it was, marked by gathering clouds of war. The Grants vowed never to be separated, but as Ulysses rose through the ranks—becoming general in chief of the Union Army—so did the stakes of their pact. During the war, Julia would travel, often in the company of Jule and the four Grant children, facing unreliable transportation and certain danger to be at her husband’s side.Yet Julia and Jule saw two different wars. While Julia spoke out for women—Union and Confederate—she continued to hold Jule as a slave behind Union lines. Upon the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation, Jule claimed her freedom and rose to prominence as a businesswoman in her own right, taking the honorary title Madame. The two women’s paths continued to cross throughout the Grants’ White House years in Washington, DC, and later in New York City, the site of Grant’s Tomb.Mrs. Grant and Madame Jule is the first novel to chronicle this singular relationship, bound by sight and shadow.

Chapter One PrologueJune 1834 The slaves froze when they heard the old master shouting from the big house, conversations cut off in midsentence, hands grasping spoons hovering between bowls and hungry mouths. Even the little ginger-colored maid strained her ears to listen, dreading to hear her own name bellowed in anger. For a long, tense moment she heard only the crackling of the fire from within the kitchen house and birds chirping overhead, but then Tom shook his head and resumed eating. “It ain’t us,” the lanky coachman said through a mouthful of oat porridge. “Something happened in the city, but it ain’t nothing to do with us.” Quickly the slaves finished their breakfasts, scraping their bowls with their carved wooden spoons and licking off every last savory morsel before rising and darting to work. Only the little ginger-colored maid hung back, reluctant to return to the big house and whatever storm brewed within. She busied herself gathering up the dirty bowls and spoons and carrying them to the washbasin, but as she rolled up her sleeves, the cook shook her head. “Poppy can help me with that. You best be running off.” Annie was only twenty or thereabouts, but she was the best cook in the Gravois Settlement and proud of it. “Miss Julia be looking for you. Stay out of the old master’s way and you be all right.” Glumly she nodded and hurried away. She found Miss Julia seated on the front piazza, frowning anxiously at her hands in her lap, a red ribbon bobbing atop her thick, glossy, dark hair in time with the swinging of her feet. She glanced up at the sound of her maid’s bare feet on the well-worn path—her expression sweet, her skin soft and rosy—but she held her head awkwardly, tilting it this way and that, trying to fix her gaze on her maid despite her cross-eye. “There you are,” Julia cried, bounding out of her seat and down the stairs. She seized her maid’s hand and pulled her along, her glossy curls a dark cascade down her back as they ran. The maid’s spirits rose as they left the big house behind. She knew where Julia was leading her—to the stables and the family’s horses. They heard Gabriel, the stableboy, singing before they reached the corral, before they saw him emerge from the stable, a sturdy, russet-colored boy of ten years leading the missus’s favorite bay mare by the reins. The boy with the voice of an angel had been given a name to suit when he had been brought into the Dent household four years before. He had been called Tom then, but the old master had renamed him for the sake of the elder Tom, the ebony-skinned coachman. The maid thought it strange that she had not been given a new name too, since she shared one with her mistress. Instead, ever since the old master had bought her when she was scarcely four years old, the family and slaves had made do by calling her Julia the maid or the little ginger girl or, more often, Black Julia. Side by side, the two Julias stood on the lowest rail and rested their elbows on the corral fence, watching Tom and Gabriel exercise the horses, which Julia adored and rode whenever the old master allowed. When they tired of this, the mistress seized her maid’s hand again and they ran off to the kitchen house, another of Miss Julia’s favorite places on her family’s country estate. Julia could always charm a treat from Annie and never failed to share it. “Ginger and cream,” Annie often remarked when she spied the girls’ clasped hands, the darker skin against the white. Once, years before, Julia had felt a soft, quick, wetness on the back of her wrist and turned her head in surprise to discover her mistress bent over her hand, the pink tip of her tongue still protruding between her red lips. “I wanted to see if you tasted like ginger too,” Julia had said, her expression embarrassed and guilty. “Do I?” “No.” Julia had frowned in disappointment. “Just skin. And brine.” “I was helping Annie pickle cucumbers.” Impulsively, she had lifted Julia’s hand to her mouth, her tongue darting out for a small, swift taste. “Hmm.” “What? What is it?” “Definitely cream.” She had nodded sagely before dissolving into giggles. “The sweetest, freshest cream ever.” Julia had laughed, delighted. Annie shooed them away soon enough, and they ran off deep into the woods encircling White Haven, to their favorite, most secret place, a beautiful, shadowy, moss-covered nook near a burbling stream that fed into the Gravois. Julia’s favorite game was to pretend that this was a fairy bower and that she was queen of the fairies, ruling fairly and benignly over her kingdom, as confident and gracious in make-believe as she was shy in real life. The ginger maid portrayed her favorite lady-in-waiting, a deposed fairy princess from a far-off kingdom, bearing all the grace of royalty despite her more humble status. When the sun shone high overhead, the maid, her stomach rumbling with hunger, reminded her mistress that Julia would be expected home for lunch. Just as they emerged from the woods, they halted at the sight of a pair of horses tied up at the front post and the old master greeting two men on the shaded piazza. “Soldiers,” said Julia, squinting enough to make out their uniforms. “See them for me.” “They’re officers,” her maid replied. Her mistress’s poor vision was a source of endless frustration, and she often called upon her maid to describe people and scenes for her, especially at a distance. But even things close to hand, like picture books and sewing, gave her headaches if she were obliged to study them too long. When Julia was first learning to read, after squinting at the reader for a quarter of an hour, her forehead would throb so painfully that she would plaintively ask her maid to see the letters aloud for her. The missus soon put a stop to that, reminding Miss Julia that slaves weren’t allowed to read and dismissing her maid with a stern rebuke. “I see that much for myself,” said Julia. “What else?” “The tall one is younger,” she continued. “He’s a lieutenant. The short, stout one has gray hair, and I think he’s a captain. I don’t think they ever been here before.” “They must be from Jefferson Barracks,” said Julia, her voice dropping to a murmur. “One of the officers did something terrible.” “What he do?” “I don’t know. Let’s listen.” Julia took her hand once more. They darted to the house, tiptoed up the front stairs and down the piazza, and crouched silently beneath one of the parlor windows. What they heard chilled the maid to the bone. A few days before, Major William Harney, the paymaster at Jefferson Barracks, had become enraged with a slave, Hannah, whom he accused of hiding or losing the keys to his sister-in-law’s household in St. Louis, where he was residing. He had seized a piece of rawhide and had beaten her savagely upon her head, stomach, sides, back, arms and legs, rendering her unconscious, bruised, and bleeding. Hannah died the following day, and the coroner’s jury of inquest noted that her body had been lacerated and mangled in so horrible a manner that they could not determine whether the violence had been committed with whips or hot irons. To avoid arrest—and in advance of a mob of outraged citizens intent on stringing him up—Major Harney had fled the city aboard a steamboat and proceeded to Washington City to request a transfer so he would never have to return to Missouri. The officers had come to warn the old master that anger against slaveholders throughout the county was soaring, and he ought to take care until it subsided. Julia squeezed her hand. “Did you hear? That bad man will never come back. Papa says Washington City is about as far from St. Louis as you can go.” She nodded, her throat constricted too much to allow speech, but her heart pounded, her mind flooded with images of a slave woman screaming in anguish as the rawhide cut into her skin, falling to her knees in a pool of her own blood— She scrambled away from the window and fled to the woods, closing her ears to Julia’s beseeching cries. She fled to the safest place she knew, the fairy bower, where she lay down on the soft moss and hugged her knees to her chest. Before long Julia arrived, breathless and anxious. “I knew you would come here,” she said, sitting down beside her. “You mustn’t be afraid. What happened to that poor Hannah will never happen to you. I swear I’ll never beat you and I won’t let anyone else either.” She felt a small measure of comfort, enough to compel her to sit up and wipe the tears from her face. But she knew Julia was just a little girl, eight years old like herself, and incapable of fighting off anyone who might want to hurt her. “I don’t like it when people call you Black Julia,” the young mistress suddenly declared. “It’s not a proper name, even for a servant. But you can’t be Julia, because I was Julia first.” She didn’t contradict her, although she was the elder by two months and so had been called Julia longer. Her mistress was the first to be called Julia at White Haven, and she was a Dent. It was fair that she kept the name. “I’m going to call you Jule,” she said. “It’s almost Julia, but different enough so no one will need to put anything else before it to tell us apart. Do you like it?” “Yes,” said Jule, after a long moment. “It’s nice.” “Then Jule it is,” Julia proclaimed, beaming. Jule was proud of her new name. It wasn’t quite as well earned as Gabriel’s, or as fancy as Suzanne’s, but it was nice, and it was hers alone. “Miss Julia says we all supposed to call me Jule now,” she told Annie that night as the weary slaves gathered at the kitchen house to eat their supper, deferred while the Dents and the livestock were seen to. “Really.” Scooping stew into bowls, Annie gave her an inscrutable sidelong look. “You proud of that odd name, ginger girl?” “It ain’t odd,” said Jule, lifting her chin. “Some girls called Ruby or Opal or Pearl. Why can’t I be called Jewel?” One of the field hands guffawed into his stew; it might have been Dan, but she couldn’t tell in the darkness, which on that moonless night was lifted only by the light spilling from the kitchen-house doorway and the campfire Tom and Gabriel had built. “It’s pretty,” piped up Suzanne, the housekeeper’s walnut-colored daughter. She would be the maid for Julia’s next-eldest sister someday but as yet was too young to be much more than a playmate. “Pretty, huh?” Still clutching her spoon, Annie planted a fist on her hip and regarded Jule from beneath raised brows. “You ain’t called jewel like no pearl or sparkling ruby. You called Jule to be short for Julia.” “Annie,” chided Tom mildly. “She’s just a girl.” “She’s eight years old, old enough to know how things are. She ain’t got no mamma, so it falls to me to tell her.” Annie’s expression turned solemn as she crouched low beside Jule and held her gaze. “Listen here. Your new name just a piece of her name, just like she think you no more than a little piece of her. There’s us, and there’s them, and you one of us.” “I know that,” said Jule sullenly. “No, I don’t think you do. Listen, ginger girl. You ain’t never gonna be a part of that family, no matter what Miss Julia say now, no matter how she hold your hand and tell you she love you. Soon Miss Nell gonna be old enough to be a real friend and not just a pesky little sister, and as years go by you gonna be less a friend and more a slave. It always happen that way. Unless you want your heart broke, you best get ready and watch for it coming, so it don’t catch you by surprise.” Miss Julia was different, Jule told herself fiercely, interlacing her fingers over her growling stomach as Annie filled bowls with stew and she waited for one to be passed her way. Miss Julia was different, and Jule was different. They were ginger and cream. It was not their fault they were mistress and slave too.

13 of 16 people found the following review helpful. Jennifer Chiaverini is a master storyteller! By Kris Anderson - The Avid Reader Mrs. Grant and Madame Jule by Jennifer Chiaverini is a novel based on the life of Mrs. Ulysses S. Grant (Julia) and her slave, Jule. The novel starts in 1834 (prologue) and then jumps ahead ten years to the spring of 1844.Julia Dent grew up in Missouri. Her father was a slave owner. When Julia was four years old, she was presented with Julia (they had the same name). Julia was a ginger colored slave. Since they had the same name, Julia changed her maid’s name to Jule. The Dent’s country home was near Jefferson Barracks which housed soldiers. Ulysses, a recent graduate of West Point, was stationed at Jefferson Barracks. Ulysses came from an abolitionist family in Ohio. Despite their differences Julia and Ulys (as Julia called him) fell in love. Despite her father’s reluctance (he did not think that Ulysses could provide for Julia nor did he think that she would like military life) the two married.Jule grew up with Julia and learned how to read, write (despite the laws to the contrary), dress hair, and make special concoctions (for hair and skin). Jule was in love with Gabriel, the groom. However, she would not marry him for fear that she would have to leave him when Julia married Ulysses. After Julia marries Jule is told that she will not be going with her mistress. Ulysses has been stationed at a posting where there is no room for servants. Jule had always hoped that when Julia married Ulysses values would rub off on Julia. Jule’s primary goal was her freedom. The book goes on to describe Ulysses’ career, Julia’s and Ulysses marriage, children, the Civil War, and life in the White House, and their later years. Julia’s views on slaves did not change for a long time. She viewed slaves as necessary to the function of a household and the lifestyle Julia was accustomed to. Julia thought slaves liked having a home provided for them as well as clothes and food despite Jule’s attempts to explain how she felt about slavery.Jule was lucky enough to run away from Julia during a trip and received help escaping to Washington City (Washington D.C.). Jule found success as a hairdresser as well as making and selling her salves, lotions, and tonics. Jule ended up living her life in Brooklyn, New York.I have tried to give you a brief (as brief as I get) overview of the book without giving away any spoilers. I give Mrs. Grant and Madame Jule 4.5 stars out of 5. It is a exceptional book with incredible writing, but I did not find it as satisfying as The Elm Creek Quilt series. I also wished the book had written more about Jule. The main focus of the book is Julia and Ulysses Grant. Jennifer Chiaverini is a master storyteller and Mrs. Grant and Madame Jule will keep your eyes riveted to its pages. This book can easily be read without reading the previous three books: Mrs. Lincoln’s Dressmaker, Mrs. Lincoln’s Rival, and The Spymistress. Ms. Chiaverini’s next book is Christmas Bells: A Novel. It will be released on October 27, 2015 (according to Amazon.com).I received a complimentary copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

We challenged each other to read a biography of each of the first ladies, and it's only because of that commitment that I finished this book. This is a historical novel. I couldn't find a biography on Julia Grant that appealed to me, so figured I get enough of the "feel" of her life as I know the historical facts. So let's look at this book both ways: As history and as a novel. As history: The author is obviously a fan of Grant because you could shoot a cannonball through her omissions of negative facts. I realize that she did not present it as a complete historical account. But what she did choose to include only favored the man. And while there are MANY admirable qualities about Grant, one of the most striking events of his presidency is that he accepted railroad stocks as bribes, and also had stocks given to his wife, in exchange for granting those railroads the rights to prime land to lay their tracks. I kept wondering how Ms. Chiaverini would handle that after being banged over the head repeatedly about how honorable Grant was. Her solution? Don't mention it. Again, this was not presented as a complete historical biography. Got it. It really is more of a love story featuring a president and his wife. But to write of his time in the White House and not to mention this huge scandal is rather like writing about Richard Nixon in office and deciding to omit Watergate.I feel that if one is going to write a historical novel, the history should be authentic. So many times this book led the reader to a conclusion that is not historically accurate. We don't need ALL the facts, but we do need it to be generally in sync with history. As a novel: This is a love story. Fine. Love stories can be inspiring. But it was written as if the reader was 13-years-old and had only experienced a crush. Each sentence seemed to begin and end (and sometimes in mid-sentence) with such monikers as "my darling," "my love," "my dearest little wife," "my precious Ulys," ad nauseam. After a while one may find the need for Pepto Bismol. People don't talk like that ALL THE TIME. I adore my husband and always greet him with love and a sweet term -- but not "Pass the mustard love of my life," "Here it is my darling pet." Please. Enough. This book is a failure both historically and as a novel. Too bad. They were an interesting couple who went through an incredible time in our history.

Juvenile biography By Cynthia Glazier While I have liked several other books by this author, this novel felt like it was written for a juvenile audience. It totally glossed over general Grant's problems with alcohol, calming them unsubstantiated rumors made up by disgruntled underlings, as well as barely mentioning his presidency. No explanation was given for any of the many issues that plagued him during these times. Rather it focused on th Cicil War, but gave no indication of how difficult following her husband through out the war would have been for Julia and the children. I felt this to be a naive, simplistic view of Julia Grant. The portrayal of her slave, Jule, was slightly more detailed and humanistic but not very realistic in the difficulties a former slave would have had in starting a successful business.

Ebook PDF Balo's War, by Alfredo E Cardenas

This book uses a variety of characters, real and imagined, to tell the story of a people who went from being Spaniard to Mexican to American in a short span of 30 years. They struggled to hold on to their land, their language, their culture, and their history—against insurmountable odds. At times this struggle resorted to violence. This is a historical novel depicting the “Plan of San Diego, Texas,” one of those times when the struggle became violent. They lived in what can truly be called "Medio México." It was an area that was claimed by distant capitals in México City and Washington DC, but ruled by neither; neither knew or cared much about them. They were caught in between two languages, two cultures, two legal systems, two political systems, and two monetary and economic systems. Despite it all, they survived and flourished. It was not easy by any means; to survive they had to fight and die for what they believed, what they owned, what they knew, what they wanted for their children. This book uses fictional characters to tell their story. The characters are fictional but they are authentic. They are not based on any one person but rather are a compilation of various real persons and the imagination of the author–formed by historical knowledge and his own experiences. Their conversations and interactions with real persons, such as President Woodrow Wilson, President Venustiano Carranza, and all the other historical figures are imaginary but they are based on who these historical figures were, said, and did.

An Eye-opener By Atilano Salas Alfredo Cardenas deserves to be commended for the long hours he invested researching material for this fictional account of a violent and sad chapter of near-forgotten South Texas history. His gripping tale is an eye-opener for those of us who live, work and play in this storied border region.

But I promise...if U R looking for a good story that will at least captivate U "somewhat"... this ISNT it. It written in juvenile terminology, lacks common sense, character development & even the love scenes aren't good. If U R an avid reader, U will B mostly disappointed & probably as unable to proceed as I was....

Little did she know how her world would change. Not only did she get offered a job that was a promotion from what she had applied for and more money, but she was working for this smoking hot guy Mr. Dimples aka Chuck.Chuck and Jacob were billionaire partners and old friends. Oh how they fell hard for Kadeesha. What better thing then to share her and agree that they would always play as a 3some to keep one from getting jealous. As the relationship grows it becomes more complicated, tempers fly, and feelings hurt. Someone’s true colors really come out and blinders are taken off where others see they are not the person they thought this one might be. Sorry not going to tell you which one. You have to read the book to find out. Will this 3some survive? Will friendship end? When the business survive? I recommend this book. It is a very hot and steamy romance novel. You will find yourself fanning at some of the parts.

But a series of sexy blunders could threaten her new position, except she manages to drive her two bosses crazy with desire. This is a quick, steamy ménage that’s the beginning of a series, but works well as a standalone read. Naughty fun!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Get fast results By Harry Louis Nevertheless, this book goes along with the changing times, and enlightens you about the real essence of the ketogenic diet. There have been so many studies conducted about low-carbohydrate diets. More often than not, conclusions turned out that low-carbohydrate diets were the most favorable, compared against particular and popular diets. Not only do they manifest increased body weight loss, but they also indicate principal improvements in most health risk factors, which include cholesterol levels. Inasmuch as they continuously provide several proven health benefits, there have been countless modified creations of the low-carbohydrate diet—and among the most accepted adaptations is the ketogenic diet. The ketogenic diet is an exclusively low-carbohydrate, high-fat eating (LCHF) regimen, popularly practiced for the more complicated treatments of seizures. Butter, heavy cream, and vegetable oils usually provide the required fats, which fully eliminate sweets at the same time.
