From the Author "We are so fortunate to have Dr. Travis Langley and his outstanding contributors' new book, Star Wars Psychology: Dark Side of the Mind. May the Force be with you as you read, learn, and rediscover why you love Star Wars."- Carrie Goldman, from her foreword"When Jung described the dark side of the mind, he referred to the part that is shadowed and hidden deep inside. It might not be evil at all.... While we are certainly not all Jungians, all of us bringing you this book do believe that the hidden, unrevealed part of the human nature is worth exploring. Both the light and dark sides unite in us all."- Dr. Travis Langley, from his introduction
From the Back Cover The Star Wars saga is a sprawling space opera that has captivated fans for decades and continues to inspire a new generation. Evil tyrannical oppression rules this world and heroes must rise to battle the darkness. Psychiatrist Carl Jung and mythologist Joseph Campbell observed that people in every place and time tell tales of heroes who face darkness, win victories, and returned transformed. This archetypal Hero's Journey underlies the Star Wars story and demonstrates the role of psychology in shaping this saga. By exploring psychology, fans can better grasp the motivation and mental states of their favorite characters. What is individuation and how does it embody the tenets of a powerful spiritual organization? How does anxiety disorder explain the transformation of a character's psyche from good to evil and back to good? Can robots feel pain and suffering? How do limb amputation and neuroprosthetics impact the brain? Does music influence our emotional reading of this saga? In 20 chapters from a range of esteemed psychology professionals and The Empire Strikes Back novelist Donald F. Glut, a foreword by Carrie Goldman (author of Bullied: What Every Parent, Teacher, and Kid Needs To Know About Ending the Cycle of Fear), and "Force Files" exploring the "Big Five" personality factors and the characters who embody each major trait set, Star Wars Psychology: Dark Side of the Mind sheds new light for fans of the series and psychology.

3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Not written by a fan By Grant Rogers I received this as a random gift for Christmas. It is a very interesting book which raises intriguing questions and draws many lines between Star Wars and psychology. However, for every time I was pleased by this book there are errors that stop it from meeting its potential. Most chapters are independent essays that raise a different question, or examine certain psychological characteristics within the Star Wars universe. Therefore, there is a different author and writing style for each chapter. Some chapters are written excellently. Others, however, are full of mistakes; grammatical mistakes, mislabling of figures and diagrams, and a failure to correctly cite which Star Wars movie is being referred to.This book seemed like a great idea; it combined my interest in psychology with my love of Star Wars. However, it does not appear to be edited very well. Failure to identify simple grammatical and citation errors, in addition to the greater frustration of not properly referencing Star Wars, lead this book not not reach its potential. It is okay, 3 out of 5. Worth about 5 bucks, or worth a read if you get it for free.
