By RB So, it's no secret that I was waiting for this book and that I'm hopelessly in love with these characters.Tortured Chrissie is so imperfect that she is the most perfect heroine and Alan...there are no words.Tokens and Tears picks up with Chrissie leaving Alan for no good reason other than immaturity and her stubborn tendencies. In my opinion, she had to leave because that's Chrissie (and I would have never left Alan). With leaving, Chrissie goes to college where is still her famous father's daughter and struggling to make her own identity. She hooks back up with Neil Stanton, and he's such a good guy but NOT ALAN.Most of the book is spent during Chrissie's college years and her time dating Neil. For me, Neil doesn't do it, and Ward does a wonderful job depicting how he is nothing but a placeholder for Chrissie. He's fun, sexy, kind and protective. But again, not Alan.Alan does return and well, I didn't move for those chapters. He's married now and Chrissie is still dating Alan, but the attraction cannot be denied. And, no spoilers, but they are just so HOT together.The writing in this book transports the reader to the beaches and gorgeous rocky locale of Santa Barbara and the crunchy campus of Berkeley. The conversations between the characters are as if the reader is there and the steamy scenes are insanely steamy in this one.We are left with more questions in the ending, but Ward leaves a preview. It's not enough ... because I need to see Chrissie and Alan have their happy ending. It will make all the messiness worth it.FIVE ALAN MANZONE STARS!
2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Really Good Series That I Don't Want To End By Bookish I’m trying to figure out how to say what I want to say without any spoilers. The story is very taut (with surprises), so avoiding spoilers will be hard. Here’s the thing you should know – The Girl of Tokens and Tears is even better than the first book, Girl on the Half Shell. And I loved the first book. I loved it because of the characters, Chrissie and Alan. I loved it because of Chrissie and Alan together. So how could this book be even better, especially since – (uh, walked into a spoiler). Okay, I figured out what I want to say, tho it may not be very PC. I’m so tired of tough kick-ass heroines. No, that’s not entirely true. I never really liked them all that much in the first place. I’m not tough. I cry. Some might even say I cry a lot. Chrissie cries too. For good reason. She’s young, she’s suffered heartache and loss, and she’s not tough. But she IS strong. And she is getting stronger all the time. Susan Ward writes with such tenderness and caring for her characters, I’m afraid she’s going to break all our hearts when this series ends. Of course, I’m going to cry.
4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Why? Why? Why? By Ju I still don't get Chrissie, her character has everything to shine but the development of her story is just stuck somehow. She is a weak, indecisive and unsympathetic character. I could understand her immaturity in the first book but after 4 years she still behaves like an immature teenager over and over?! the story gets really boring after a while with all the back and forth and the "i dont know what i want" crap. I still don't understand what holds her back in regards to Allan, and it's beyond me why she won't tell the truth if Allan already knew she was with Neil, gets old pretty quickly with all the arguing and the annoying running away again crap.
