"There is no such thing as vampires!" He'd heard it so many times, though now it elicited only a knowing chuckle. For even if his kind did not use the term, "vampire", preferring "necros", it was all bloody semantics in the end. Gothic became a necros in 1891, something that, if it wasn't actually a vampire, was damned close. He could change his form, "push" and "pull" thoughts from the minds of others, move more quickly than the eye could perceive, and he could kill more efficiently and with greater violence than anything he'd ever imagined. Upon being born into the blood, Gothic learns to use his new capabilities to indulge his violence fetish as never before. Now he can explore the limits of violent energy, delighting in it as either its instigator or its passive audience. This is the story of how Gothic became what he is, answering the questions Nightsongs raised about him, and explains just why he singled out the little boy in the kitchen, following him, tormenting him, feeding upon him, and ultimately enslaving him. This explains the human who became the monster. Then how the monster became something more.

From the Author Gothic Immortal is the first of the "liaisons" in The Necropath series. I have been fond of the stories or novellas that some authors have published as "linking" pieces between the novels in a series. Several authors I respect have done this, and as a fanatical reader, I love the practice. So the idea was always a desire in my mind - ever since The Necropath series began to take shape. However the concept became even more important when members of book clubs and individual readers began demanding that I share more about Gothic, one of the primary antagonists in "Nightsongs: The Necropath Book 1". I was frankly surprised, and perhaps a bit worried (!) that Goth developed any kind of following, as he's a pretty bad seed. As he breathed life and began telling me about himself, I was startled at just how frightening he could be. Yet his fans began to contact me through my website and through social media, and the demand was consistent: "We want to know his beginnings, and how did he come to be this vampiric creature?" Even more distressing: "Does he die in the end?" As if any self-respecting writer, or, let's be honest, reader/novel fanboy, would ever ruin it for the rest of the world by answering that!Gothic Immortal is a prequel, hence the book number in the series, .666, coming before Book 1. Please forgive the devilishly poor form of that joke - perhaps regrettably, I'm full of tasteless humor. The novella strives to answer the questions readers have asked since reading Nightsongs. Remember, I'm not just a writer - I'm a fanatical fiction fanboy - and I demand of the writers I read the same things you likely do. So please reach out to me and let me know how I'm doing. I respect my fellow readers more than you can imagine, and want very much to live to up to our lofty expectations. The feedback and questions I've gotten thus far have made the series better. And it has quite a way to go... So welcome! And let's begin the adventure - come with me, along The Necropath!

I especially liked the description of the process that Gothic underwent By Michelle Dalatowski It all fits perfectly with the rest of the series and gives us the insight that many of us were wishing for, to complete the background of the character and understand much more about how he came to be what he is.The author builds on an existing world, already full of rich imagery, and provides the details that make it even more complete. I especially liked the description of the process that Gothic underwent, from who he was, and going through the Necrosphere to become what we come to know in Book 1 of the series. The character too, had much depth and I was captivated by him in the first book, and now that I get to know where he came from and what he had to go through, makes him an even more intriguing and rich character.I have read many vampire books before, starting with Bram Stoker’s Dracula, up to the more contemporary books by Anne Rice or the Sookie Stackhouse series by Charlaine Harris, and I have enjoyed them all. However, in no other book of the genre that I know of has an author provided such a vivid account and detail about the process of becoming a vampire. It is mostly always understood that you get bitten and then wake up being a vampire, simple as that. So now, finally we get a proper description of the whole process, and that in itself makes this a standout read because it makes you understand the genre in a wholly new and original light.

Not really, but I’m just saying…This novella, like the ones Stephen King has written, tells a focused story, but since this is Christian Masters, it doesn’t actually FEEL like a novella. His writing is hard to describe – he has the ability to say a heck of a lot with carefully selected words. The prose is not sparse, that’s not what I mean. I mean that an author can tell you in three pages of narrative what Masters can tell you by having two characters eye one another, exchanging a tense volley of words. It’s a beautiful thing to watch, or read, as this case may be.His writing conveys a ton of information and reveals fascinating conflicts that already exist between each of the characters in Gothic Immortal, as well as in the rest of The Necropath series. This means that as a reader, I felt I walked into a very challenging conversation in progress. I could make my apologies for interrupting, but I must confess that I’m fascinated by what’s going on there. So while I might apologize for interrupting, I want them to continue! You owe it to yourself, if you enjoy supernatural thrillers, to pick this up and enjoy it. For only a dollar, you cannot go wrong, here! Trust me, though, this author is good enough that his work is worth so much more. For the enjoyment you’ll get, it’s worth full price. So pick his work up while he’s still “new”. He’s so good that won’t last and to get this enjoyment, you would need to pay a premium in the not too distant future.

However for every fifty or so raving reviews, there is one that just doesn’t seem to understand the book. This is not quite horror fiction, though there are some very scary scenes in it. This isn’t Stephen King, for the most part. Maybe something less scary though no less suspenseful, like The Dead Zone or Firestarter, perhaps, but this is no Pet Cemetary. The author doesn’t go for gros-out or garish horror. It is however very supernatural, featuring vampires, witches (both of which are handled in a very mature and believable manner – a la Anne Rice or Alice Hoffman) There are ghosts here, but again, the author takes pains to make them believable. I myself don’t believe in any of that, nor an afterlife, and that features prominently in this book series. Yet my disbelief didn’t prevent me from enjoying and, for the moment anyway, believing in the world Christian Masters has created.I have seen two types of complaints about these books: 1. From fundamentalist bible beaters who refuse to consider vampires or witchcraft as being real, and are offended by Masters’ use of the afterlife, The Necrosphere, and the road leading to it, the titular Necropath. Or 2. From people who are upset the author has challenged the vampire mythology created by Anne Rice. To that first group, I ask, “Why are you reading supernatural fiction in the first place? The packaging makes it very clear what this book is about, and the written description and sample do not make any effort to deceive a reader into reading something that would offend. To the second group, I ask “Why would you think that any author copy another’s mythology? The only things Masters’ necros have in common with Anne Rice’s vampires is drinking blood and being sensitive to light. But then, she hardly invented those, now didn’t she?All things considered, if you enjoy supernatural thrillers, and enjoy vampire novels and are open to the idea of magic a something real, you will probably like this book. If you like thrillers that you cannot put down, get completely enthralled by, you’ll love this series. But yes, if any of that doesn’t sound good to you, you might not want to buy this.
