By Norm Beavers I am getting so tired of the lousy Western stories by writers "selected" by the Johnstone family.Many situations in this book are unbelievable, although Pinnacle does not choose to include "This story is fiction...." statement on the title page.I have to admit the writing is very good, better than most Western writers today. Easy reading, no need to look up strange words or stumble over lousy sentence structure.I'm trying to stop buying these books, but Bill Johnstone entertained me from the 1980's and it's hard to accept the fact that his style is completely gone!Norm

MacCallister and The Kingdom Come Gang By Randy Johnson The newspapers called them the Kingdom Come Gang for their propensity to slaughter as many people as they could when raiding a town. Led by two men who'd escaped prison the night before they were to be hanged, they'd gathered some of worst cutthroats around them. A small town they'd taken over and killed the law, the mayor, and most of the town council.Marauding in West Texas, They'd run afoul of Duff MacCallister, who made friends with the Englishman who'd bought 600 head of Black Angus cattle. It was also the area of his lady friend Megan's sister and her family, son and husband who was sheriff.When they take the son and his friend, the Englishman's future stepson, Duff gathers a group to go after them.The only problem had with this one was the brevity of the final showdown.

I've never been disappointed... until "Kingdom Come.". The story was fragmented, but readable so I kept going. The new character, Wang, was interesting, but his character development was mediocre at best. Maybe he gets better in future stories. There seemed to be an unusual amount of cruelty in this story, and yet, the final "showdown/shootout" was so abrupt and so quick, I had to turn back a couple of pages to make sure I hadn't skipped over anything.Also, the Kindle edition was poorly edited. If this is the best that J. A. Johnstone can do, I'll be looking for a different Western writer. And that's too bad because I really liked all the older works by William W. Johnstone.
