Being Kind to Yourself Is the Best Medicine By Barb Markway This is the book I wish I'd had when I began my journey with chronic pain ten years ago. It's practical, reassuring, and written by someone who's traveled the journey.Toni Bernhard is a best-selling and award-winning writer of How to Be Sick and How to Wake Up. She also writes a popular blog on Psychology Today, Turning Straw Into Gold. Her readers adore her, as evidenced by her over 200,000 fans on Facebook. Previously a law professor, Toni became ill in 2001 while on a trip to Paris and has never recovered her health. Experiencing chronic flu-like symptoms and often being bed-bound hasn't stopped her from leaving a full and rich life.As Toni writes in her introduction, How to Live Well is "one dose stark reality, one dose practical skills, and one dose humor.” Her books are inspired by her 25 years of Buddhist study and practice, but like well-known Western dharma teachers such as Sharon Salzberg and Tara Brach, she explains these concepts in a relatable way. Support and comfort for the whole family By LynnG Beloved author Toni Bernhard has done it again, with another book full of wise, practical reflections on how to live well even with chronic pain and illness. Based on her own experience and laced with gentle humor, Toni’s words offer support and comfort for anyone whose life has been turned upside down by chronic illness, including family and friends of the sick person.I turned immediately to Chapter 39, “Letting Go: A Not-To-Do List for Caregivers.” Here Toni’s gentle voice allowed me to smile in recognition of mistakes I’ve made while navigating the uncharted and unwelcome territory of caregiver. Trying to pretend everything is like it used to be – been there, done that. Expecting myself to always, always be “up” for the job -- check. Feeling guilty when I did go out and enjoy myself. Allowing myself to become socially isolated along with my loved one as friendships withered away. It felt comforting to see so much of my own experience validated. The rest of the book felt equally relevant. A not-to-do list for the chronically ill rang many bells. Have I ever squandered precious energy worrying about what others thought? – Yes. Treated disheartening thoughts and emotions as permanent fixtures in my mind? – Yes. Ignored signals from my aging body to say “no” to an activity? – Definitely. Every chapter addresses topics directly relevant to me as a person simply trying to live life on life’s terms, such as developing the confidence to say “no”; surviving a bad mood; longing for some aspect of life that no longer exists; coping with emotions such as loneliness, envy, resentment; and many others.Toni’s voice is light and unpretentious, never preachy. As in her two previous books, she offers no quick fixes; rather, she describes her own experiences in nearly 15 years of chronic illness and the simple, doable practices that have worked for her. I loved this book and will refer to it often. Recommended for just about anyone.

By Rachel Hadas I always feel that even one good idea from any kind of self-help book from Epictetus or Marcus Aurelius to Pema Chodron makes the book worthwhile, worth returning to, and probably the source of other good ideas. This is eminently true of Toni Bernhard's books, and this latest one is no exception. I've already read it twice and will return to it, and I strongly recommend it. Her voice is conversational, confiding, honest, and just smart; her anecdotes all have a point; her sympathies and insights are never squishy but always firm and applicable. Toni has overcome a discouraging and frustrating situation - not "battled" it, but managed it, made meaning out of it, and she continues to share that hard-won meaning with others.
