By Wulfstan I have always liked Doc Weil, he has such a great "bedside manner" when talking about nutrition. Eschewing hype and fads, he uses a common sense (and taste-centric!) approach to healthy eating.The Good Doctor is well known for his support for a an anti-inflammatory diet- as he says "It is becoming increasingly clear that chronic inflammation is the root cause of many serious illnesses - including heart disease, many cancers, and Alzheimer's disease. We all know inflammation on the surface of the body as local redness, heat, swelling and pain. It is the cornerstone of the body's healing response, bringing more nourishment and more immune activity to a site of injury or infection. But when inflammation persists or serves no purpose, it damages the body and causes illness. Stress, lack of exercise, genetic predisposition, and exposure to toxins (like secondhand tobacco smoke) can all contribute to such chronic inflammation, but dietary choices play a big role as well. Learning how specific foods influence the inflammatory process is the best strategy for containing it and reducing long-term disease risks."But don't worry, with such tasty choices as salmon Niçoise ; linguine with clams; and dark chocolate date and nut truffles- you won't even know you're eating healthy! Not to mention, he has a number of cocktail recipes including Cortes Island Caesar, a version of a Bloody Mary, and Vermont Bluegrass, a shaken bourbon cocktail.Of course, there are veggie options, and kale figures in (OK, we can't agree on everything, and I hate kale) for those on a non-meat diet.It's not a 'diet"- it's a lifestyle change!

The recipes are so beautiful and inspiring. I love that I can make everything in this book. I don't need to be a graduate from a culinary school. The recipes are simple and doable. The ingredients are healthy and nutrient dense. I love the pantry essentials and quick tips in the front of the book and the basic recipes in the back. It gives me a good arsenal of things to have on hand to make weekday cooking more efficient. I also think the book will make a great holiday gift for anyone who loves fast good food.

Beautiful Food, Simple Food By Julie in the Kitchen Happily this is another beautiful beautiful book from Dr. Weil, and its charm truly lies in its simplicity. He begins with what are often humble ingredients and elevates them with just the right touch of spices, herbs, or the flavor lift of acid. The techniques are straightforward and accessible for any cook, and the vibrant flavors are the perfect reward with little time invested. The Pantry Essentials section is a welcome reminder about the value of well stocked cupboards, especially when time in the kitchen is limited. This is another book to cook my way through!
