From the Back Cover "This novel is a winner."--Publishers WeeklySome endings are really beginnings . . . On a hot day in 1737 in Rotterdam, Anna König reluctantly sets foot on the Charming Nancy, a merchant ship that will carry her and her fellow Amish believers across the Atlantic to start a new life. As the only one in her community who can speak English, she feels compelled to go. But Anna is determined to complete this journey and return home--assuming she survives. She's heard horrific tales of ocean crossings and worse ones of what lay ahead in the New World. But fearfulness is something Anna has never known. Ship's carpenter Bairn resents the somber people--dubbed Peculiars by the deckhands--who fill the lower deck of the Charming Nancy. All Bairn wants to do is to put his lonely past behind him, but that irksome and lovely lass Anna and her people keep intruding on him.Delays, storms, illness, and diminishing provisions test the mettle and patience of everyone on board. When Anna is caught in a life-threatening situation, Bairn makes a discovery that shakes his entire foundation. But has the revelation come too late?Bestselling author Suzanne Woods Fisher invites you back to the beginning of Amish life in America with this fascinating glimpse into the first ocean crossing--and the lives of two intrepid people who braved it."I found Anna's Crossing to be everything I love in a novel, especially in a historical novel! Fast paced, character driven, filled with rich descriptions and enjoyable dialogue. An excellent historical fiction By Sunniereviews Several times I have written to author's when they had story line requests and mentioned that I think it would be so interesting to do an Amish historical fiction, thinking of an Amish going back to search for roots, or visiting the homeland. I had never thought about the crossing, although I have done a Powerpoint presentation about immigration and the circumstances of that crossing. Of course, I had to do a lot of research to make the presentation, and I can honestly say that Suzanne Woods Fisher did her homework well.In this story Anna König finds herself preparing for a trip to the new land. The year is 1737 and the ship is the Charming Nancy. This is not a trip that Anna is looking forward to and she knows upon leaving she will never see her grandparents again. Anna is a young woman with faith, courage and determination. She meets Bairn, the ship's carpenter and although the initial meeting is not what she would have preferred, she eventually finds him to be very supportive to her and the other "Peculiars" as they are called. Among the immigrants is a young boy, Felix Bauer, who wants to experience everything and anything and that includes watching what happens on deck, although this was never to occur. But Felix definitely finds a "work-around" for that rule. The descriptions of the sailing conditions, the trip, the waiting, the storms, the many interesting events that occur are certainly brought to life as the author describes them all so well, you can almost feel and smell the air they breathe. The supporting "cast of characters" are very well developed and very essential to the book. Each page is filled with history and the daily dealings of those on this ship.I greatly enjoyed this book, maybe because I am a genealogist and delve daily into old records and historical events. I give it 5 Stars! I highly recommend this wonderful book.

The Charming Nancy is the ship where the major events of the story take place. Starting in a small town in Germany readers are introduced to Anna who is being sent to the New World by her grandparents for a couple of reasons, marriage and increasing persecution. While crossing the Atlantic, readers will become engrossed in the various lives and interactions of the Amish and their lives reflecting their beliefs. Bairn serves on the Charming Nancy as the carpenter and third person in charge. Over the course of the crossing and threats to lives, his heart is changed but not without some very deep and personal internal struggles. The novel is unlike other Amish novels I have read to date, focusing on the hardships endured with hope as the Amish remain below the main deck. Susan Fisher Woods paints pictures in the minds of readers of how people lived, died, believed in God or were bound by superstition. At the end of the book, fact is separated from fiction along with the author’s intent of why she included some material, but not other.I am sure it is hard to imagine the harsh life, high mortality rate, and how there were people who sought to benefit greedily from the freedom to worship that the Amish sought. I sat down to begin the book figuring it would take me almost two days to finish, but I simply couldn’t stop myself from reading it till the very end including the history notations. Whether one agrees with the Amish way of life or not is inconsequential as one lesson we can learn from this moment in time is do we live like we profess to believe?Hope, endurance, faith, believing, superstition, greed, loyalty and more are just some of the themes I was able to glean from the novel. History can teach us all many lessons one of which is leaving behind a written account of what we encounter in our lifetime. Susan visited or read up on the plight of immigrants, Amish, and more, especially anything connected to the real ship that bore the name Charming Nancy. I can’t say enough about how traveling back in a historical novel can remind one what is important along with the challenge to live out the faith we so eagerly express!

By Coffee Addicted Writer (Billy) While I was recovering from the cold virus that hit me over the weekend, I found time to read Anna's Crossing by Suzanne Woods Fisher yesterday afternoon, which is arriving in bookstores today. I'm a fan of the author's other novels (Stoney Ridge Seasons and The Inn at Eagle Hill), so naturally I was looking forward to reading her newest novel. Most Amish historical novels that I have read are set in either the 1800s or the early 1900s, but Anna's Crossing is set in 1737, where a group of Amish and Mennonites from Germany are leaving their country for the New World aboard the "Charming Nancy" ship. The main character of the story is Anna Konig, a young woman who is traveling with her Amish community on the merchant ship to start a new life in Pennsylvania. Her father is already settled there and he's awaiting her arrival. She has brought along one of her grandmother's rose bushes, which she has stored in a basket, so she can always remember where she came from. For 83 hard days, Anna and her fellow community discover that traveling across the sea isn't that easy. Along the way, there is sickness and even death, but Anna's strong faith in the Lord will help her arrive safely in the New World.Typically, an Amish novel's main focus is romance, but that isn't the case with this one as the main plot of the story is about the Amish & Mennonites traveling across the seas to the New World to start a new beginning for their families. The author did a wonderful job making me feel like I was right there beside Anna on the "Charming Nancy." From the descriptions of the ship to the depth of the characters, the book is perfectly written. My original intent was to only read a few chapters of the book yesterday afternoon, but I got hooked into the story and I ended up reading the entire book in one sitting. Overall, Anna's Crossing is a wonderfully enriched story.*Disclaimer - I received a complimentary copy in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own.
