Allie Carmichael has always believed life is simple. You're born. You live. You die.She has no cause to believe those rules don't apply to her. All her life, Allie has suffered in silence as those around her shrink from her touch, too intimidated to take the time to get to know her. It's left her feeling like an outcast for fifteen years. When an unexpected move to Kelleys Island brings Aidan McBrien crashing into her life, Allie is thrown by his reaction. He isn't affected by her touch. He doesn't stutter or make a quick exit. He smiles and welcomes her into his circle of friends. For the first time ever, Allie knows what true friendship means. Finally, she has a real shot at normal--until "normal" crashes and burns when she wakes in agony on her sixteenth birthday. Aidan calls it her Awakening, a rite of passages he and their friends have all faced. Allie struggles in ignorance through the experience, uncertain of what is real and what isn't. When she emerges, she is different. She has always been different, but even among her extraordinary friends, she and Aidan are special. As Allie struggles to maintain her tenuous grasp on the power that threatens to overwhelm her, she worries she will lose herself in this strange new world of ancient Immortal beings. A dangerous world where she will have to fight tooth and nail to defend the power and freedom that is her birthright. Join Allie and Aidan in this coming of age, urban fantasy set within our own world. Emerge Awards:2015 Dante Rossetti YA Awards Finalist2015 USA Best Book Awards Finalist2015 International Book Awards FinalistTop 50 Indie Books of 2015

Review Full Kirkus ReviewMost people stay away from 15-year-old Allie Carmichael, as they have an apparent aversion to her touch, which renders her nearly friendless. Her parents' jobs keep the family moving from place to place, but Allie feels that their latest move to Cleveland might not be so bad when she meets Aidan McBrien. He's not the least bit intimidated by her, and their mutual attraction is instantaneous. It's odd, though, that, like Allie, Aidan and all of his pals are adopted. Allie, who's accustomed to being a pariah, suddenly has friends, including Aidan's older sister Sasha, and later, a new boyfriend, Vince. When a fireworks accident turns into a raging fire, Allie, Aidan, and their friend Kayla miraculously survive. Aidan's family feels that they have no choice but to explain some things to Allie on her 16th birthday. It turns out that it's the time of her Awakening, a painful rite of passage for Immortals during which she begins to exhibit other extraordinary, supernatural abilities. Many in her circle of friends have endured their own Awakenings. Before she can fully register this information, she's undergoing weapons and martial arts training and honing other skills, such as clairvoyance. She's reluctant to fight anyone, but she may soon have to battle the members of the Coalition, which is run by mortals but armed with Immortal allies. The bulk of the novel follows Allie as her mentors train her, and she can see their memories; one trainer, Emma, for example, may have witnessed the Coalition's genesis back in 16th-century Paris. Allie's concurrent high school life, however, is unfortunately dropped from the plot. Her romance with mere mortal Vince generates searing melodrama between the couple and Aidan, who wants more than Allie's friendship. The narrative defines various powers more clearly as it goes along: Aidan has healing capabilities, for example, and Allie can, among other things, absorb solar energy. The best power, however, is one that Allie and Aidan share, which later proves to be a hilarious distraction when Allie goes on a date. The buildup regarding the oft-discussed Coalition has a superb payoff when the baddies finally make an appearance, resulting in a bloody, intense confrontation. The story leaves plenty unresolved, of course, paving the way for sequels. An unhurried but engrossing start for a potentially riveting paranormal series. - Kirkus ReviewsThis series is one to watch! Emerge is an intriguing story You Just Can't Put Down. Melissa A. Craven is fantastic at world building and creating strong origin stories for her characters. This is one Indie book that should be on every YA shelf. - YA Books CentralEmerge has a good message for young readers. Craven did a nice job of packaging that message into a fun, paranormal action story that readers can get excited about.- JJ Phillips for Readers' Favorite  "Emerge TheAwakening grabbed my attention within the first few pages and refused to let go until the very end."  -Jamie Georgianson for Readers' Favorite "Young Adult Fantasy today is being pumped out like never before. In her debut novel, Emerge: The Awakening, Melissa A. Craven has skillfully developed a believable plot that begins by blending friendship, romance, adventure and mystery but then builds on that by throwing in a race of immortal beings, martial arts, battle against ancient enemies and the anticipation of the fulfillment of a very old prophecy. - Chris Mills for Hub Pages  "Craven obviously has a talent for strong and interesting characters!" -EmilyWhite for Readers' Favorite

From the Author Emerge is a product of years of work and a strong desire to create realistic, relatable characters. I am an avid reader of all things fantasy and I have a special love for the Young Adult genre in particular. BUT ... there aren't enough good examples of strong young woman in YA. That was one of my main motivations for writing Allie's story. As a reader, I grew frustrated with female leads who were either incredibly weak without their male counterparts, or they were the complete opposite as strong, frustratingly stubborn and jaded girls with their love interests trailing along behind them as a liability, offering little to the story.I wondered where was the balance? Where was the example of equality and respect? Where was the actual-for-real girl power? So I wrote Emerge. Allie's story has morphed over the years, but that message of equality, strength and respect has always remained the same.

Craven has seriously just joined the top of my list of favourite Authors! Such an impressive start to a series and definitely has me wanting more!I loved this book it flowed really easily, a fast page turner that kept me engrossed from start to finish, a highly recommended top read! This book is based on Allie who spends most of her life alone and misunderstood, people shy away from her, but there is a reason people shy away from her and she has no idea why. After a Un expected move her life is tipped upside down, this is where the handsome mysterious Aiden appears in her life, he doesn't shy away from her like she is used to. She faces hard times uncertainty, fear, and will have a lot of challenges thrown at her. I will go no further as I don't want to ruin the book for you.!Allies is such a strong amazing character, this is a brilliant thing about this book, Y/A needs more strong female characters. I love her witty attitude and huge personality. She has such sassiness, which for me suites a flaming redhead with startling green eyes.!Aiden for me is a great character he along with Allie are my favourite characters. I love the relationship between Allie and Aiden and I am hoping for new height with book 2.Every character in this book flowed beautifully I enjoyed every single one of them. Liam I just adored! I loved the way they developed with the book, and they were so realistic, each and every one had a significance with the book and made it what it was, I love how Melissa built each one of them into this thrilling story, there wasn't any small time characters ( maybe apart from vince.) the focus was on all of them not just Allie and Aiden. The whole Immortal thing is just great you would think well they are immortal so they are going to be something like your typical Angels or Vampire, but no they are immortal beings, who live supposedly for Infinity. However there are ways for them to be killed! And this makes this book so exciting as you don't quite know what is going to happen to them. This is a fabulous story line a perfect read if you like Action, sassiness, Romance, suspense and hot sexy immortals that can kick ass...

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Slow start but there's potential... By Jordan Smith I received a free copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.Melissa A. Craven’s Emerge (The Awakening #1) is a young adult paranormal romance focusing on the peculiar experiences of Alexis “Allie” Carmichael. Allie has always had a strange effect on those around her—they’re slightly uncomfortable in her presence and that’s only made worse by physical touch.Allie has pretty much accepted this reality, not really questioning if she’s different or if there’s something wrong with her. She can also read people fairly well, knowing if they are a friend or someone she shouldn’t trust. When she literally runs into Aidan McBrien one day and he isn’t effected by her off putting presence, the pieces of who and what she really start to click into place. Allie’s Awakening is about to take place and all of her questions about Aidan and his family and about herself will finally be answered.Allie is an Immortal. Immortals, once awakened, has superior strength and speed as well as numerous other abilities common to their species. Each of them also has their own range of abilities unique to the individual. In Allie’s case, she’s a powerfully rare Clairvoyant. In Aidan’s case, he is a Healer and an Empath.Allie and Aidan are equals. They have shared similar experiences—their friends and family are wary around them because of their power. Mortals sense it, too.Much of this novel focuses on Allie’s acclimation to life as a mortal. Not having grown up around other Immortals, she is not familiar with their abilities or their culture. It is hard for her to accept and change her mortal mindset.A key part of her acclimation to this new world is her relationship with Aidan. They are instantly connected, best friends. There’s something stronger underneath the surface of their friendship, but this isn’t something that Allie is quite ready to accept. This novel holds a lot of interesting potential. The concept of the Immortals is a different change of pace (though not entirely unfamiliar). Allie and Aidan’s relationship is compelling. Even the rich history of the Immortals told through the perspective of many of the secondary characters is interesting. But somehow, the writing is awkward, the pacing is too slow, and the ending is a bit too predictable. In the beginning of the novel, I kept having to check and see if I missed something. The author relies on a lot of dialogue often forgetting to put it into context. There is a ton of world building and character background with very little action or plot. And I guessed all too easily what the ending would be a third of the way into the novel.Ultimately, I think that I wanted to like this novel way more than I actually did. 3 stars for potential. I do want to see if the next novel gets any better.

I've enjoyed the fully developed characters of Emerge. They each have such interesting layers that Craven casually reveals throughout the book. The historical aspects were truly ingenious and unexpected. I love that the adults are not just flat characters. They have their own wonderful stories that go back hundreds, maybe thousands of years. Some of them played prominent roles in history...well you have to read it to find out...No spoilers here.Allie is by far the thing I loved most about the book. Craven has created a female character that is truly one of a kind. She is the epitome of the strong young girl who is a role model simply because she is real. Allie is a girl everyone can identify with. She is spunky, witty, loyal, smart, and a good friend. Not to mention her wonderful sarcasm. I laughed throughout the book over Allie’s unpredictable sarcasm. Please do yourself a favor and read this book! Craven will take you on a journey that starts quietly with a young girl who seems a little mysterious at first, and even more so when unexpected events sets you on edge by the end of the first chapter. You will go along with Allie as she travels this road, uncertain of her future. The journey will not always be quiet. There will be moments of extreme pain and confusion as well as moments of laughter and playfulness. Just when you think the journey is coming to an end…Craven throws you another curve ball and shows you just how wrong you were. You should NOT miss out on the end of this book.Kindest Regards,Christina L. Radney
