On the 50th Anniversary of the start of America's commitment of major combat units to Vietnam, Youth In Asia is a new Vietnam War novel of young Americans trapped in the jungles of Vietnam's Central Highlands in a war they did not understand. This is a story that relives the friendships, loyalties and betrayals of young men in combat. Written by an infantryman who served as both an enlisted man and an officer after the war, Youth In Asia presents a realistic account of five men of the 173rd Airborne Brigade separated from their unit in the darkness of a jungle night. Lead by an overconfident young soldier fresh from the DMZ in Korea who thinks he knows what he is doing, they arrive in jungle clearings on waves of Huey helicopters, jumping to the red dirt before slogging across fields and dropping into one dark valley after the next while running low on bullets but driven by fear and anger. As day breaks, pushed to the limit and losing blood, there will be heroes, cowards and death. And they will make decisions that will haunt the survivors. After the furious fight for Hill 875 and the battles around Dak To, this story is set near the border with Cambodia as North Vietnamese Army units and Viet Cong irregulars are massing for the brutal Tet Offensive of 1968 that broke the back of America's commitment to fight the Vietnam War. It is a story of our Vietnam Veterans' determination, triumph and loss. It is a story of furious, close combat in lethal firefights, and it is a story of confusion both on the battlefield and in the minds of young men a million miles from their homes. Those that survive will have changed. Forever.

Review "...it's a gut-wrenching suspenseful story... It's some of the best war fiction that I've read." -- J. Chambers HALL OF FAME, TOP 10 REVIEWER, May 2015 "Tiffany is a bright new voice... His style is strong, gnawing close to the bone..." -- Grady Harp HALL OF FAME, TOP 100 REVIEWER, VINE VOICE, April 2015 "...a disturbing rendering of the war in Vietnam through the eyes of an innocent man...it's a gripping tale that will stick with you long after you finish with it. ...a great story..." -- Dennis Waller TOP 500 REVIEWER, June 2015"There are many action/adventure stories on the market that feature the 'super soldier' that always emerges victorious... In this case, the victory is merely staying alive..." -- Charles Ashbacher HALL OF FAME, TOP 500 REVIEWER, VINE VOICE, June 2015"This is not the stuff of hero's (although there will be heroics), this is the stuff of real men of war and the ravages that they will face...for those who were there (I wasn't) or those who lost friends (I did) you can't read this without it bringing back many memories..." -- William D. Curnutt TOP 1000 REVIEWER, VINE VOICE, June 2015"...I was impressed how Tiffany maintained high dramatic tension throughout ...I was also impressed by how many themes were woven into the story... As for Tiffany's account of small infantry units in the 'face of battle,' 5-stars." -- John P. Jones III TOP 1000 REVIEWER, VINE VOICE, April 2015"I rank it with 'Better Times than These', 'The 13thy Valley' and 'Sand in the Wind' as some of the best fiction to come out of the war." -- James W. Durney TOP 1000 REVIEWER, VINE VOICE, June 2015
From the Inside Flap "In one of the greatest war novels ever written, Stephen Crane's Red Badge of Courage, the narrator grapples with being in combat and how he will hold up under fire... The same could be said about the narrator in Allen Tiffany's riveting and gritty novella..." - Jeffrey Miller, Author of War Remains, May 2015"As a Vietnam veteran myself, assigned to the 173 Airborne Brigade, I felt a special bond to the storyteller in this novella. [...it is a] realistic story... This novella will take you there and let you experience a few days in the life of our young heroes." - John E Wolfe, June 2015"Short, engrossing, realistic. Consistent with, though different from, my small unit infantry combat experience in Vietnam. And the ending is particularly realistic....Well worth the price and time." - A Sante, March 2015 "...Youth in Asia does not provide any moral lessons, nor does it try to make sense of the politics of the war. ...this is a story about survival... War is not just an abstraction or a video game, there are real people, mostly young, that have to go out and patrol and fight and face the risks..." - K. Kumar, January 2016The Second War in French Indochina. The Vietnam War. Call it what you will. In America's military experience, it was sandwiched between the Korean War and The Persian Gulf War. America backed into it without a clear understanding of why we were even there and no understanding of how to win. Like the War in Korea, it was indecisive at best. More accurately it was a failure that took untold lives and devastated many of the veterans that survived. The war also horrifically scarred Vietnam and devastated its population. It was arguably the US military's most unsuccessful campaign, and it deeply damaged the Army and Marine Corp who were on the frontlines day after day, caught in firefights in obscure battles with names like Operation Delaware, Lam Son 719, and Junction City. Or that were fought at Cu Chi, Ia Drang, the A Shau Valley, Dak To, the Mekong Delta, Hue, Khe Sanh and the Iron Triangle. Places most Americans have never heard of. What most Americans do remember of the war is Americans held in a terrible prison called the Hanoi Hilton, some obscure chemical called Agent Orange and that people who confront extended periods of stress -- such as our soldiers -- struggled with "PTSD" (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) long after the battles are over. For the combatants, all wars are very small. Most wars rage within a few feet of the soldiers and play out in a few seconds. A few men on a patrol deep in a jungle can find themselves alone and without communication, intermixed with enemy soldiers. War has no meaning then. There is no war. There is no national doctrine. There is no policy guidance from men in suits a million miles away. There are only a few young men trying to stay alive. What they will think of each other years later does not matter now.

Chambers Retired Army officer Allen Tiffany did not serve in Vietnam, but he's written a gripping novella about an infantry unit's harrowing patrol in late 1967, just as the North Vietnamese Army (NVA) was building up for the Tet Offensive that began in early 1968. As told by the author's fictional narrator, Corporal Jacobs, it's a gut-wrenching suspenseful story of a five-man squad team that became separated from the rest of their platoon and must make their way back to their battalion firebase while surrounded by the enemy. It was touch-and-go wending their way through the enemy forces and hoping their own men would not fire on them when they approached the firebase. The narrator, who was the leader of his fire team, kept sight of his goal - to keep his men alive despite almost impossible odds. There was nothing glamorous or heroic about this kind of war. It was dirty and exhausting being on patrol for days at a time, constantly aware that the enemy may see you first and ambush your unit. The author steadily ratcheted up the tension till the all-hell-broke-loose climax. The writing is simple and clean as the author conveyed very graphically the horrors of war. The dialogues were gritty and realistic for the conditions. It's some of the best war fiction that I've read. And kudos to the author for donating half the proceeds from the sale of the book to the Wounded Warrior Project, a very worthwhile cause.

Curnutt Allen Tiffany provides us a powerful short story about the war in Viet Nam in time to honor those who served there on the 50th anniversary of the beginning of that conflict. As a military officer, an graduate of Airborne and Ranger school, Tiffany provides a unique knowledge of the military and specifically the army that allows him to deliver this poignant short story about American Army Personnel who served in Viet Nam.Having five people I knew loose their lives in Viet Nam and with one of those, John Michael Tompkins, having been my childhood best friend and "big brother" growing up I knew the pain and loss that this conflict brought to many families in America. Having talked with and received written documents from those men that were with John on the day he died I learned how harsh the reality of an Ambush can be, especially when your comrade and friend don't survive. So, it was with interest that I wanted to read Allen's story. Let me say that his portrayal of this squad of men and their patrols in the highlands of Viet Nam capture perfectly the stories that John's friends relayed to me and wrote in their own diaries. I felt as though I was walking through the jungle with those men. So, thank you Allen for a powerfully written message about the men who served. I will say that it was a hard read, because I could picture my friend John and picture his death in an Ambush and know that it happened during the Tet Offensive, just as your story tells.NOW FOR THE STORY REVIEW:A young Army Airborne Ranger leaves his tour of duty in Korea along the DMZ to head for his next posting, Viet Nam. He arrives in November 1967 just a short time before the 1968 Tet Offensive (Tet meaning New Year) by the Viet Cong takes place. This young corporal will be placed in charge of a squad of men because he has "experience" because of his time in Korea. He and his four men will need every once of courage, strength, fortitude and good luck to survive what is coming. The Battalion and the Company that his squad is part of has just lost 200 men on hill 857 where there were also 700 casualties. So, the squads, platoons, companies and the Battalion are all very short handed. Our Corporal comes along just after that and thus gets placed in leadership quickly. We will follow him and his three "veterans" (men who have been through that fight) and their new "cherry" recruit that has just arrived from the United States and is fresh out of basic trainer, which means, he knows nothing. The character of each man will be developed by the author, but what is amazing is how well he tells of their thoughts, their fears, their anxiety and their courage under fire. This is not the stuff of hero's (although there will be heroics), this is the stuff of real men of war and the ravages that they will face, the sweat, the heat, the bugs, the insects, the tiredness, the lack of food and good water and the contact with the enemy which brings the true inner man to the surface. The title of the book is correct, these were very young men thrown into war, many of them just 18 years old. They would change from what they would see. They would either come home "much older" than their age, or they would come home in a coffin. Death was always just one step away. This book is fairly quick and easy to read, but for those who were there (I wasn't) or those who lost friends (I did) you can't read this without it bringing back many memories, not all of them nice.Thank you Allen for such a well written story.

More than just a war novel; a fine piece of literature By Ken Korczak This is a short, intense and gripping novel that holds the reader in a state of tension almost from first page to last, and that tension is released by a masterfully-handled description of a bloody firefight in the steaming jungles of Vietnam. The book succeeds because the author captures the reality of war by showing us what it truly is -- a frightening combination of intense boredom and endless fatigue punctuated by horrific moments of frenetic combat in which men are shot, stabbed, wounded, bleed and die.It tells the story of a U.S. Army infantry corporal leading his men on patrols in the steamy jungles of Vietnam in an area near the Cambodian border. The area is infested with the enemy; the U.S. soldiers, some barely more than boys out of high school, are playing a constant game of kill or be killed. They are in a frightening foreign, alien environment that are the nightmarish jungles of South East Asia. All the gloves are off - this is a bitter fight where the only goal is to see which side can kill or maim as many as possible on the other side. It's takes a remarkable amount of writing skill to capture the brutal reality that was the desperate fight in Vietnam. Author A.L. Tiffany does everything a writer can do right to place his readers inside the story -- to tell a story -- to create characters, set a scene, build a plot and impart a theme. The writing is tight, without a wasted word. Each sentence is no-nonsense, clean and lean. What's truly amazing is that the author manages to introduce us to five characters and brings each one of them to life as believable figures we quickly get to know - and thus we care about them and feel empathy for their dire situation.Great writing is also about illuminating small details - the nitty-gritty aspects of just getting by - such a filling a canteen from a muddy stream and dousing it with iodine tablets -- a soldier curled up in his poncho sleeping in the mud - or showing us how a knife blade can be too wide to penetrate the brain if you stab a man in the eye.Best of all, the author understands that if you tell a story, and tell it well, all the rest takes care of itself. That is, you don't have to get on a soapbox to rant and rave about whether you think the Vietnam War was a good thing or a bad thing. There's no lecturing or bland moralizing. Yes, there's a sense of guilt, regret, confusion and horror - of doing one's duty for one's country -- but all of this falls out naturally by illustrating a situation thrust upon innocent American young men by the ever-so-wise "Powers That Be."Youth In Asia is more than just a short, punchy war novel - it's great literature.
