Sebastian Orwell did the only thing a smart wizard could do when he stumbled upon the wounded Crown Prince: he healed him and dumped him in a tavern where he could continue not being Sebastian's problem. Unfortunately, the prince isn’t content with being alive, and he hunts Sebastian down to thank him personally. Not only is Sebastian stuck with the prince's unwanted affections, he's also confronted by growing evidence linking the assassination attempt to someone from his father's past. Lord Orwell is a lot of things: thief, liar, drunk, and all around horrible father, but Sebastian knows he's no murderer. In order to prove it, Sebastian has to keep the prince alive long enough to discover the truth—a task made considerably harder because the idiot prince prefers wooing Sebastian over securing his own survival. On top of everything, Sebastian needs to save the day without revealing his magical powers and the real reason he hides his appearance. Sebastian had no intention of playing the hero, but whoever is stirring up shit in his country will pay for destroying his quiet life.

I’m so glad I did! While I sometimes got lost because the cast of characters was enormous—not uncommon for high fantasy but I still struggled to understand all the connections—the story held my interest throughout. The plot wasn’t difficult and I guessed early on what the curse was but that didn’t detract from my enjoyment. Sebastian was grumpy and snarky and tried so hard not to fall for Turren, the prince. Turren, on the other hand never ceased to woo Sebastian. These two guys were highly amusing together, plus I loved it when Sebastian finally gave in and admitted his feelings.Sebastian’s family was a strange troop with lots of memorable characters. Some of them got on my nerves after a while but in the end everyone proved how important family is to them.If you’re looking for a fun read, this story is for you. Definitely a recommended read!

Wonderfully Underplayed Wit By BookCat Length: 100,469 words (324 pages)POV: ThirdGenre: High Fantasy RomanceAt first I thought “Family of Lies: Sebastian” was a light coming-of-age style book but as I kept reading, the wit and intricate threads caught me in the story’s web and the wonderfully underplayed wit kept me smiling and chuckling. One of my earlier favourite scenes has to be when Prince Turren is riding through the magic forest after being warned to stay close by the commander, although there are many others I enjoyed just as much.Sebastian’s family is complex and his siblings intriguing (I would love to read the story of Sebastian’s older sister Diana), and I liked Sebastian right from the start, even though he is a stubborn grump. Turren took me a fair bit longer to get used to as he seemed the typical spoiled brat-prince who went after whatever he wanted, damn the consequences. The fact that Sebastian stumbled into the intrigue rather than it being centred around him really kept my attention, and the dance between Sebastian and Turren was slow and sweet, adding to the plot without overtaking it.I would recommend this story for anyone who loves a good intrigue, witty dialogue, surprises, and complex characters. The romance is equal to the plot, rather than one being more overt than the other, so if you don’t like a bit of romance with your stories, this one might not be for you.Having read this story, I immediately went searching for others by the author and was disappointed to find he didn’t have any. So instead, I guess I’ll have to wait impatiently for the next in the Family of Lies series, which Sam Argent’s webpage tells me is currently in progress.

Dawson What's great about the book.I have a super soft spot for grumpy lovers who are difficult to woo. I enjoy turbulent starts to relationships. Having put that out there, Sebastian was a perfect character for me as a reader. I adore his grumpiness and how he mouths off to everyone, regardless of station. Prince Turren is a wonderfully persistent foil to Sebastian's character and the wooing process is enjoyable to read.I also liked Sebastian's family dynamic. Horrible people that know each others weakness and prey on them without remorse. Sam Argent writes this family very well, leaving the reader with the feeling that dysfunction does not mean love and loyalty cannot also exist. The family equally plots against each other and pulls their ranks together when put in a corner. The dialog is witty and carries the majority of the story. I frequently found myself laughing out loud at some of the antics in this book. Why the 3-Stars:This is a really good beginning book. It definitely has the feeling of an author's first book. The world building is shaky, but intriguing. It's stated at some point that there's been lots of inter-species mingling and that some people live longer than others, but that's about all that's said. A little more world building woven into the story could have provided a clearer place for the story to take place in. It could also have used a little more detail regarding the relationships of the families involved. It was unclear exactly who the main family is in regards to the royal family, what their standing was in the scheme of the kingdom, what exactly their relationship was to the royal family. A little more explanation could have really made parts of the story less confusing. There's also many points where topics are being discussed that sound clever, but leaves the reader confused on what exactly is going on. Again, just a little more detail about the history of the families would have been nice. Also, the bad guy came out of nowhere. While the Prince's life is put in danger early in the story, there's no hint of the bad guy until much later in the story, at which point it feels like he's actually had a really big impact on the history of the kingdom. Again, just a little more detail in the world building would have solved this.So there's the good and the bad. That being said, it was a fun read and the author left a lot of openings for there to be more in the series about the Orwell family. I will certainly be keeping an eye on the author and will be buying the next one. The writing level in this book clearly displayed talent and I feel the books Sam Argent puts out will only get better. Looking forward to seeing more from this author.
