Emily, the gardener’s daughter, has known Barrett “The Shark” English her entire life. She’s pretending to be his fake fiancee, accompanying him for business dinners, etc. Til one night, she decides to poke the shark, and gets much more than she bargains for. She breaks up with him, but he’s not letting her go so easily….The GoodI couldn’t resist the description - it had a very Sabrina-esque vibe to it, if Sabrina had fallen for Linus from the beginning, instead of David. I was not disappointed. At all. Emily and Barrett are destined for each other and it is laid out for the reader from the very first page. Barrett’s protective love for Emily is just what I love reading about.Their chemistry is compelling and the anticipation for their love scenes builds steadily throughout the story - there really is something to be said for building that tension...when it finally happens, it’s satisfying for the reader and the characters lol.The best part of reading this was a refreshing maturity from a relatively young characters - when the climax of the story occurs, Emily handles herself in a composed and intelligent fashion, which was a pleasant surprise.. Actually, most of the characters seemed grounded and have believable emotional reactions, , as opposed to the overly dramatic actions I’m accustomed to rolling my eyes about.This is part of a series, but it is not a cliffhanger and each brother will get his own book.The Minor QuibblesI can see where some folks may have an issue with the age difference (at the start of this story Emily’s 24 and Barrett’s 32), if only because of certain scenes where Barrett clearly loves her when she’s in her teen years. I think it just adds to their history, but some may not feel comfortable with that.Barrett’s main deception seemed a bit shortsighted for a character portrayed as a smart businessman. But it didn’t affect my ultimate enjoyment. The class issue is almost background, barely a consideration.The Bottom LineI really, really enjoyed this book and definitely recommend it. I’m looking forward to reading about the other brothers. I would happily read more of Ms. Regnery’s books.

By Cheshire Cat Breaking Up with Barrett is the first in series of books revolving around the five English brothers. Each can be read as a standalone. But from even the little glimpses I got about each of the other brothers in this one, I look forward to reading about all of them. I particularly look forward to this entire series because I love Katy Regnery's writing style. I love the characters she creates and the depths in which she explores them. And I love the sweet romances she writes and the connection I feel with each love story.As for Barrett and Emily's story - it was absolutely wonderful. They were a bit unconventional and started a bit awkwardly, and I loved that about them. When someone is constantly referred to as "the Shark," you wonder how such a tough businessman is going relate or lighten up around a girl who is so sweet and genuine. But that is the beauty of this story. That two people, who on paper would never match up, somehow understand each other better than even they expected. It may have taken them some time and work to get there, but ultimately they brought out the best in each other, whether in public or private, and were at their best when they were being their true selves, and I loved that about them.In addition to the appeal of their differences, I loved that they had such a rich history with each other. From the blurb, we know that Emily's parents work for Barrett's parents on their estate. But there is so much more to their past that I cannot give away, but let me just say it is so sweet! There's this scene on the balcony when Barrett is telling Emily some things, and... well, I can't say what, but seriously, I loved that scene! I completely fell in love with Barrett and Emily's story big time. I liked them individually; I loved them together. They have some major sighing and swooning moments. Barrett "the Shark" could be quite the angelfish, and Emily was just the honest gal to bring it out of him.If you love a sweet romance with just the right amount of struggle and sexiness, Breaking Up with Barrett is just the read for you. Barrett and Emily's story is complete with a tender past, touching present, tantalizing chemistry, and triumphant love. I had a mini book hangover after finishing this story, I enjoyed it so much. I hope these two make appearances in the other books, because I completely loved them.

Barrett is sexy and in control.As the first book in the English Brothers series, Breaking Up With Barrett was a sweet, romantic story. Not only did Katy Regnery bring us a story with strong characters but we are treated with a wonderful story of a love resulting after years of secretly longing and ultimately cultivating a strong chemistry and an extreme passion between Emily and Barrett.Emily was such as admirable heroine. A strong woman from a loving family growing up on the English family estate, she grew up with their sons but always had her eye on Barrett.Barrett, having had his eye on Emily for song long, thought his job offer would keep Emily close. Having convinced himself that he didn't need a relationship, deep down he knew he only needed her.When these two get together after months of the pretense of being engaged they face a turning point that changes everything for the both of them. Katy has an amazing talent for bringing characters to life and telling a story that just melts your heart.I fell in love with brother #1 and don't doubt I'll love the rest of the English brothers.*A copy was provided by the author in exchange for an honest review.
