British Ambassador to the U.S. Geoffrey James is a shady sort, prone to womanizing and taking financial advantage of his contacts. When Ambassador James drops dead at his own gala party, everyone suspects the ambassador’s Iranian valet Nuri Hafez—who has suspiciously disappeared. But Washington Metro’s Captain Sal Morizio and his fellow officer and lover, Connie Lake, are convinced there is something far more sinister going on. Margaret Truman enlivens history with her first-hand knowledge as the daughter of a U.S. president. When the book was first published in 1984, the Associated Press raved that Murder on Embassy Row moved Truman into “the international spy genre.” The engrossing and exotic details keep readers on edge and wanting to know how James was killed, and why. Murder on Embassy Row is the fifth book of the Capital Crimes series and was a New York Times paperback bestseller in 1985. The enduring Capital Crimes series, published between 1980 and 2011, contains twenty-five titles, all set in and around Washington, D.C. The series can be read out of sequence, though some characters do recur. Capital Crimes has aged well, with generations of readers attracted to the true-to-life scenarios that only someone with intimate knowledge of politics could provide.

About the Author

Margaret Truman, the only child of President Harry Truman (33rd President of the United States), was born in Independence, Missouri and spent her early years between Missouri and Washington, DC, where her father was a senator. Upon the death of Franklin Roosevelt, Truman assumed the presidency and the young Margaret moved to the White House. From there it was on to George Washington University and a Bachelors of Arts degree in History. After college, she pursued her interest and talent in singing and from the late 1940s into the early 1950s she performed around the world, as well as on radio and television shows. Her singing career received mixed reviews, but nonetheless was followed closely by the media in her day. Truman remained in the public eye when she went on to become one of the first women to be part of the then fledgling morning news and entertainment shows, paired with Mike Wallace on NBC’s show Monitor in 1955. She began her writing career in 1956 with her first book, Souvenir, Margaret Truman's Own Story. The autobiography was followed by several works of nonfiction including books about her father, her mother, Bess Truman, and several books focusing on the history of the White House and its previous inhabitants, including former pets of White House families. In 1980, with the release of Murder in the White House, Truman began her foray into the world of fiction, which would continue for the rest of her life. Her Capital Crimes series remains popular with a whole new generation of readers who are intrigued by behind-the-scenes pictures of the political process. A prolific writer in both the fiction and nonfiction genres, Truman has written a total of thirty-five books and is today a truly popular American writer. Margaret Truman died in 2008 at the age of 83.

Murder on Embassy Row (Capital Crimes Book 5), by Margaret Truman

From the Inside Flap Ambassador Geoffrey James might be a British citizen, but when he dies on the night of a gala party, it's up to Captain Sal Morizio of Washington's Metropolitan Police Department to investitgate. Despite orders to desist, Morizio and his lady love, fellow officer Connie Lake, know too much. And what they learn on an international search for missing clues tells them a lot about corruption in high places--and the effects of caviar on otherwise rational people....

Here she's gone beyond the limiting format (that was getting annoying in her previous books) of having a tough-as-nails but cuddly-as-a-kitten heroine solve the crimes. The plotting in "Embassy Row" is much more carefully crafted, as British Ambassador Geoffrey James dies after his own party under mysterious circumstances. This is the first of Truman's books where you won't have guessed the villain by about 50 pages in. The characters are a bit better, but Truman's efforts at cop-talk and cop-walk still fall woefully short. Hero Sal Morizio makes lots of dumb naive mistakes for a veteran big city detective. He's the least credible of all the characters. Truman also plays some of the same riffs as in her previous books: she spends a lot of time describing D.C. cafes and restaurants, but is woefully uninformed about how government offices actually operate. For example, there is no "British Liaison office at the State Department", and CIA isn't called "the Company" by anyone but callow writers. But the very worst and most annoying mistake in the book is Truman's repeated and insistent assertion that Iranians are Arabs. They aren't, they're Muslim but not Arab.Overall, "Embassy Row" is better than "Supreme Court" or "White House", but there's still lots of room for improvement.

I have not read a book by her in which any of the British characters were nice. Here the prime nasties are all British, from the murder victim ~ the Ambassador ~ to the planner and executer of the cover-up and the people who end up giving our protagonist clues. The only Britons of any attraction are incidentals who wander in and out of the book in a page or two. Sadly, this is not my only complaint about the book: I don't like Truman's insistance on some details ~ locations, specific stores, clothing ~ which she uses to establish her credibility. Nor has she invented an even plausible plot ~ the British Ambassador to Iran knew weeks beforehand about the Ayatollah's takeover in '79, including the plan to capture the American embassy, and the only use he made of the information was to plan a smuggling operation? Please. Stick to biography.

Great characters, good plot makes fine read By Edgar Allan Poet Murder on Embassy Row is an excellent novel with fully fleshed-out characters and a compelling plot. The main characters are decent, likable people working against a corrupted system that tries several nefarious means to dissuade them from continuing their investigation into the murder of a British official at a UK Embassy on American soil. The touchy nature of diplomatic immunity and an embassy's status as foreign-owned soil in another country brings special problems to the murder investigation. Detective Sal Morizio and partner Constance Lake won't let go once they grasp the fact that something is very wrong with the picture the Brits have painted of the crime, with American political cooperation. There's a conspiracy here to obfuscate the truth, but they can't figure out why. The only reason this review didn't merit 5 stars is due to some factual problems which diminished the novel a bit. Most of these mistakes have been pointed out by other reviewers, including references to "the Company" by people who wouldn't use that term. and other similar mistakes that show a lack of thorough research.
