David C. Taylor's Night Life, a 2016 Mystery Writers of America Edgar Award Nominee for Best Novel, takes us back to New York City in 1954.

The Cold War is heating up. Senator Joe McCarthy is running a witch hunt for Communists in America. The newly formed CIA is fighting a turf battle with the FBI to see who will be the primary US intelligence agency. And the bodies of murdered young men are turning up in the city.

Michael Cassidy has an unusual background for a New York cop. His father, a refugee from Eastern Europe, is a successful Broadway producer. His godfather is Frank Costello, a Mafia boss. Cassidy also has an unusual way of going about the business of being a cop-maybe that's why he threw a fellow officer out a third story window of the Cortland Hotel.

Cassidy is assigned to the case of Alexander Ingram, a Broadway chorus dancer found tortured and dead in his apartment in Hell's Kitchen. Complications grow as other young men are murdered one after the other. And why are the FBI, the CIA, and the Mafia interested in the death of a Broadway gypsy?

Meanwhile, a mysterious, beautiful woman moves into Cassidy's building in Greenwich Village. Is Dylan McCue a lover or an enemy? Cassidy is plagued by nightmares-dreams that sometimes become reality. And he has been dreaming that someone is coming to kill him.

The character's stories are woven together in intriguing ways. Definitely has a cinematic quality. Some clunky dialog, some not-quiet believable action sequences near the end, but at that point, you are so wrapped up in the suspense and needing to know how it all turns out, that it is forgivable. It is a quick read - you don't want to put it down until you see the conclusion. Great period ambiance.Generally recommended - summer read, traveling read. It is totally enjoyable.

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Fedora Country By r p mitchell This is an opportunity to READ a "film noir" novel that has the great elements of betrayal, lust, and a corrupt power. This gritty, well-researched novel takes you in fine detail to a point in time in early 1954 and it such compelling reading that you'll find yourself wanting to slow down your reading to make the event last even longer...Even though you can't put it down.

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. This is simply one of the best books I have read in years By Joel R. This is simply one of the best books I have read in years. Engrossing. Compelling. Far, far more than a "just" a noir crime novel, it is a detailed and complex tapestry of NYC and the US in the early 50's as it was. It is rich with great writing. Lines you won't forget while the story and characters won't let you put it down. Don't start it on a night when you have to be at work the following morning. You'll never get there on time.
