Downton Abbey fans . . . if you'd like another series set in the manor houses of England, try the Manor House Series. The first book is "Love of the Summerfields." 1880 England: the lives and loves of manor and village intertwine. Earl and shopkeeper, countess and clerk--all will be stunned and transformed by a secret that begs to be revealed. When the Weston family returns to Summerfield Manor at the close of the London social season, both village and manor relax into their normal existence. But for four women, turmoil awaits. Each must battle the restrictions of her position as her faith and character are tested. Adelaide Weston, the feisty and domineering dowager countess, is thrust out of her carefully structured life of duty by the reappearance of her first love. Ruth Weston, the manor's reclusive, guilt-ridden countess, struggles to emerge from self-imposed exile to embrace her marriage, her family, and the duties of her position. Ruth's loyal lady's maid, Molly Wallace, juggles the demands of her job, the needs of her own tumultuous family, and a secret romance. And Lila Hayward, a shopkeeper's daughter, finds herself in love with a viscount's son who's engaged to Ruth's spoiled daughter. Lila is sorely tested when she is obliged to act as liaison between the two, putting her in constant contact with the man she loves but can never hope to win. None of these women expect a decades-old secret to unsettle the balance of her life--and the lives of everyone in Summerfield. Each will have a choice to make between her own happiness and a truth that will turn their carefully-ordered world upside down.

Love of the Summerfields (The Manor House Series) (Volume 1), by Nancy Moser

From the Author Dear Reader: Love of the Summerfields was born in Nebraska, in my sister's living room, one cold February night.  As we talked hour after hour, my few ideas turned into many, and Fidelia and Frederick were born, and Lila and Clarissa . . . It was very much like giving birth.  As the mother of my characters, I never know what they look like or even what their names are, until they're here, and their lives begin. I live in Kansas, smack dab in the middle of the USA.  So why am I writing about manor houses, countesses, and servants in Victorian England? Because I've always had a fascination with all things English.  I devour the stories of Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, Elizabeth Gaskell, Anthony Trollope, John Gallsworthy . . . There's a reason for that interest.  The ancestors on my father's side were from Kent, England. Job Tyler was born in Cranbrook, Kent County, in 1619.  In 1638, at the age of 19, he came to America, to the vicinity of Newport, Rhode Island--before Newport was even named.  His great-grandson, David, was a founder of Piermont, New Hampshire, and his son fought in the Revolutionary War against England.  I'm doing further research, but I may even have English roots back to a William Tyler from Shropshire in 1543--when Henry VIII was king (no wonder I'm obsessed with the Tudors!) The whole notion that I can trace my family back over 400 years excites me.  How I wish I could talk to them and find out their stories. For stories and family rule my life. As a grandmother I'm very aware of the passage of time and new generations, and I marvel how each family member has their own unique story. And each story contains elements of love, sorrow, joy, anger, frustration, determination, success, and failure.  The details of costume and carriage change, but the intrinsic nature of men and women remains timeless. "What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun." (Ecclesiastes 3: 9) I hope you've enjoyed your time with the Weston and Hayward families.  Please come back and see what happens next in Bride of the Summerfields.  I will do my best not to disappoint.   Nancy Moser

Rowlands The overall plot was engaging enough that I finished this book despite its flaws. However, the dialog and the way the characters interacted did not feel at all true to the book's setting in 1880 England. It was extremely bothersome and kept pulling me out of the story, until about 15 pages in I finally decided to imagine it took place in a fictional time & location. After that, I was (more) able to ignore the historical inaccuracies and enjoy the story. I also found the development of the romantic relationship between Lila and her love interest to be basically non-existent. One day she has no prospects for marriage, no one on the horizon, and then suddenly she is in love with a man above her station, and he with her, with no more than 2 or 3 short, insignificant conversations.

I will definitely add some more of her books to my Good Reads list.Book Series: Manor House #1Setting: 1880s, EnglandIn this book we follow the lives of 4 women who are all unique but share one quality: love. We first meet Lila Hayward, the shopkeeper's daughter, then Ruth Weston, the countess of Summerfield, Molly, a lady's maid to Ruth, and Addie the dowager countess of Sunmerfield. Both village and manor cross paths as each woman struggles with love, loss, and faith. Class is a huge theme in this book as it is a deciding factor in who each woman marries or has married. Secrets are also within the village and manor and have a huge effect on their lives.I really enjoyed this book! There is a huge plot twist towards the end that shocked me (in a good way). I found Moser's writing style refreshing. Each character had believable dialogue and struggles. I could really empathize with Lila and her overbearing mother who no one really liked except when she had the latest gossip. I have known a few friends in similar circumstances, and I found both characters to be very relatable. I also really liked Ruth's character who had become a recluse in the manor due to her mother-in-law taking charge of every situation. Ruth feels completely inadequate, but by the end of the book turns around completely.Lola's relationship with her Nana is also very special and made me think of my relationship with my grandmother. She is supportive and always boosts Lila's confidence. We also have a few characters that I term J.R. Ewings because you love to dislike them. Lady Clarissa and Fidelia (Lila's mom) come to mind. They are shallow characters who only think of themselves.Moser develops her main characters and supporting characters with ease. It was truly a joy to see how each character had changed/matured by the end of the book.I was happy with the way the book ended but it left me wanting/needing more of the story as not all loose ends are tied up.I have checked for the second book in the series but cannot find it. The back of the book said it was coming in 2015, but I cannot even find a preorder page on Amazon. So if anyone has any details, please let me know.

By Ann Swenson If you love the interaction of the English heirarchy with the servant class, and a complete attachment to the characters involved, read this book!If you love 'Downton Abbey' you will also find this an amazing read which takes you back to a unique time in English history. Nancy Moser weaves a story in a way that you truly know and care about the characters. I have always loved her books, but this is probably my favorite yet.Addie Weston, the older dowager, is a delight. Although she has always followed the 'rules' about the proper ways to run an estate and family, she finds her true love in the later part of her life. The 'rules' are bent and ignored as she realizes the importance of love. Because she has had servants to do absolutely everything for her, it is a new challenge to actually make tea or filet a fish. But she is up to the challenge and blossoms before the readers' eyes.Ruth Weston has been reluctant to follow in the path of Addie. She is the new countess but becomes reclusive in her room. She is timid about taking on these new duties, and has secrets of her own which guiltily stifle her.Lila Hayward, the shopkeeper's daughter, is in the middle of a love triangle with a viscount's son (who is promised in an arranged marriage to Ruth's spoiled and willful daughter). She is frustrated that there is no hope for a person in her 'station in life' to marry privilege.Molly, the lady's maid of Ruth Weston, must worry about her own family and the dangers within. She loves Lila's brother, the shopkeeper's son, and they hope to be married with the Westons' permission. But, a twist in the story might change all of her dreams.Mrs. Moser's book is not just a simple romance. The reader learns about the customs and restrictions of 1880's England. The characters are not free to pursue any dream. The 'rules' interfere with their goals. And everything turns topsy-turvy when a long-held secret comes to life.A bonus at the end of the book is fashion ink drawings of what the characters might have worn at this time in history. And Discussion Questions will make it the perfect bookclub choice! Personally, I can't wait for the next book in the Summerfield Series.

There is a commonly held belief the tropical storms and hurricanes that form off the coast of West Africa are not natural disasters, but rather they are retaliation by restless spirits impacted by one of the darkest chapters of world history—the trans-Atlantic slave trade. Awiti’s destiny was forever changed the day the slave raiders arrived at her village. She made a life-altering decision with the hope of being reunited with her family, only to discover her effort was in vain. For centuries, her sadness raged within the winds and rain, resulting in tropical storms that devastated the South. But there is more to Awiti than creating hurricanes, as those who have encountered her love and wrath will attest. The truth is, there is so much more. Follow Awiti's story from mid-15th-century Africa to 21st-century New Orleans in this historical fantasy that will leave you questioning the impact of the trans–Atlantic slave trade on the physical and spiritual realms.

But more so, and in the tradition of Octavia Butler(Parable of the Sower; Kindred), Patrick employs speculative fiction to offer answers, redemption, restitution, and even a good measure of revenge." -- QBR The Black Book Review CP Patrick supplies the reader with a comprehensive understanding of slavery, the misuse of power, and the effects of insatiable greed... Patrick interweaves historical facts with the spiritual aspects in a most intriguing way. This book is simply compelling - you will never forget it. --Deborah Lloyd for Readers' Favorite

From the Author "I try to be fair to my characters. With my research and their experiences. I owe it to them to be as accurate as possible when writing historical fiction. The character is fiction but the history - it's real." - CP Patrick What readers are saying... "CP Patrick's The Truth About Awiti grips and wraps itself around the reader from beginning to end. Patrick intertwines the real dastardly use of slavery with the perceived spiritual forces and the supernatural in the form of horrific storms and hurricanes which were called upon to exact vengeance upon the perpetrators of the institution of slavery. This debut novel provides many literary dimensions for group discussions as well as individual reflection. The Truth About Awiti is worthy of comparison to such writers as, Tananarive Due and Octavia Butler.""If you're looking for a beautiful marriage of supernatural and slave fiction this is the book to choose." "The Truth About Awiti represents a new way of discussing the African diaspora and the lasting impact it has had on Black people around the world and our society as a whole.""It's been a long time since I've read a book so captivating. The Truth About Awiti is a thoroughly engrossing, simply riveting book..." "A book steeped in historical horror and relevance, this is definitely a debut you do not want to miss." "This is one of the most enjoyable historical fiction books I have ever read. CP Patrick's vivid imagery and emotive storytelling kept me engaged throughout the book.""This book is amazing, and by far one of the best books I've ever read. It showed me a different perspective on life before, during, and after slavery, and the heavy incorporation of historical elements makes the text all that much more real. CP Patrick's prose and the connections that she leaves the reader to draw keep the pages turning and the wheels spinning in total submersion of slave and post-slavery culture.""I read The Truth About Awiti as part of a class, and it inspired some great discussions and a lot of thought about slavery and its legacy. I would recommend this book to anyone, but particularly to English and History teachers looking for a way to engage their students with the past.""Such a great book. A New Discussion of the African Diaspora and its Effects By Petergaye Laine The Truth About Awiti represents a new way of discussing the african diaspora and the lasting impact it has had on black people around the world and our society as a whole. CP Patrick's use of anecdotes and Awiti's story to detail particular historical experiences transcends the typical use of general, vague statistics to recount the history of slavery. The variety of perspectives in the work also contribute to its depth. History is told from the perspective of the black female slave, the white slaver, a child house slave and the list goes on. It is truly comprehensive and CP Patrick is successful in showing the complex, multifaceted narrative of slavery. This makes for an engaging, emotionally captivating story that even readers today, who often times feel so far removed from slavery, can connect with.Throughout history Awiti creates storms in an effort to punish people for the crimes committed against black people. At times in the novel, I found my self questioning the efficacy of Awiti's revenge. This led me to ponder what is the best way to deal with this history and the wounds it has created. I see that this is a difficult question and I have yet to think of an answer for it. Awiti's struggle to deal with her anger and her ability to find only temporary peace also raises questions for the reader. To what extent does this mirror the experience of black people in the 21st century? In a society that is still plagued by racism and injustice, can black people really be at peace? This work really made me analyze my own feelings toward slavery and all those involved and my place in society today as a black woman. All in all, The Truth About Awiti is a page turner that causes the reader to question historic representations of the transatlantic slave trade and analyze their place in the history that CP Patrick details. This is definitely a five star read that I would implore others to pick up.

Incredible Debut Novel - My Favorite Book of 2015 By JaiMac28 I’ve really been wondering how to approach giving an introduction of Awiti to friends and family to recommend. I almost feel as if the inability to describe it perfectly in 2 or 3 sentences does this book justice, because the best way to judge this book is just to read it all the way through. I will try my best in a whole review without giving much away! There’s an old African American folklore, which is that the storms and hurricanes that ravish the American South are really the restless spirits of those lives lost during slavery and the subsequent racist violence.THE TRUTH ABOUT AWITI is an anthology of short stories, with each chapter featuring a new character in a first person perspective who is a victim of the transatlantic slave trade, from small villages in West Africa in the 1600’s when the Europeans were merely scary folklore among the villagers, to the heart of slavery in Louisiana in the 1800’s, to modern day New Orleans with Hurricane Katrina looming. The novel starts off with Awiti, a young villager who falls in love with an immortal whom she wants to share the rest of her life with. Due to her devotion to him, she offers him the greatest gift she can give: her mortality in exchange for his immortality. But as Awiti soon comes to learn, immortality is not what she hoped it would be, and she suddenly finds herself in the middle of one of the most awful genocides and subsequent racial enslavements to grace the planet. In each story, Awiti mostly plays a minor role, influencing characters as a friend, a rival, enemy, lover, demon or guardian angel. The real strength of these stories falls in the historical accuracy and author Patrick’s ability to transport us to each time and place with stunning prose, language and imagery. As the story progresses through time we never lose sight of the connection between each character, and the core violence they’re all suffering through together… this leads all the way up to modern day as we’re uncompromisingly reminded that black people are still very much effected by the tragedies of the slave trade. Some of the stories are told as if written as a diary entry, some a letter to a loved one, a simple recollection, and one is even written as a courtroom trial transcript. There is a unique set up for each chapter in addition to Patrick paying close attention to the individual accents and vocabulary used by specific groups of people through the different times. An African American Studies scholar herself, Patrick’s book is steeped in its historical accuracy, a realization both fascinating and horrifying. The character of Awiti fluctuates in the frequency of her appearance, more prominent in some chapters than others, but I was so thoroughly impressed by the vast character growth we watched her have. Even if minimally mentioned in some chapters we see her as she struggles to accept her reality, and letting go of her anger. We see her interactions with the rest of the mystical world, and the consequences that it has for her as an immortal. There is both great history and mythology in THE TRUTH ABOUT AWITI, and as a real page-turner, I left that last page immediately ready for the next one (even if in my heart of heart’s I know it may only ever be a single novel). A book steeped in historical horror and relevance, this is definitely a debut you do not want to miss. Whatever is next for Awiti or author Patrick, I will surely be first in line to hop into her next riveting story.

This debut novel provides many literary dimensions for group discussions as well as individual reflection. The Truth about Awiti is worthy of comparison to such writers as, Tananarive Due and Octavia Butler.Awiti, the exotically beautiful main character was born prematurely in a small African village in a modest but loving family. Her special qualities were noticed early on. All was well until the village was invaded by slave traders and Awiti ran as fast as possible as instructed by her father. Eventually, she found herself in the arms of Oranyan, who cared for her but later seduced her into unwittingly trading her mortality for immorality. Awiti believed immorality would allow her time to find her family and avenge their captors. The author traces Awiti’s path of destruction across the Atlantic from the 18th through the 21st centuries. Each chapter of the book recounts the unspeakable atrocities of slavery along with ever simmering frustration, anger and rage experienced by the oppressed. Finally she describes the devastating fury of retaliation through violent storms and hurricanes.I would highly recommend this novel of substance to serious readers.

By Andrew Peterson, author of "First to Kill" Harp’s BORN OF WAR takes on world issues the way they need to be taken on - with iron fists, not kid gloves. I found it realistic and refreshing! I wish more people like Will Parker were in important positions.Although Will Parker is a character of deep conscience, he carries a big stick. It's well written, engaging, and so authentic that Clancy would be proud. No spoilers, but the drama and speed of the story are on the same pace as a Bourne movie. The ending was terrific. Give Anderson Harp a try, you'll be thoroughly entertained!

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Interesting story, will keep you reading. By Fast Eddie This is a good story and I do recommend it. My minor complaint is with the main character, Parker. I have not read any of Harp's previous novels in which Parker might have been a character. Info about Parker came out in dribbles in the story and left unanswered questions that soured me a bit. His obsession for privacy, not even having property ownership in his name. Why? Where did he get all the money in the strongbox in the bank that was readily replenished by the bank? Why does he have to change banks if someone recognizes him? Exactly whom does Parker work for? Didn't seem to have to check in with anybody and was free to do whatever he wanted. Some mysterious organization with lots of pull was able to get his arrest expunged and police officers falling all over themselves trying to apologize. What or who is Parker? What does he do? Assassin? Mercenary? Troubleshooter? Soldier? Spy? Nothing in the story that provides any in-depth background. The story though is very interesting, There is more character development on the terrorist Omar than Parker. I like to have a feel for the main character and his abilities that was lacking in the Parker character. Overall I highly recommend this novel.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Fun to read and that is what matters to me By Amazon Customer I am not normally a fan of super soldier books. They are often so unrealistic as to take away from the story. This one comes close to doing that, but the author managed to stay to the barely plausible side. There is some really goofy stuff early on. The main character is a retired marine colonel, will parker. for reasons that make no real sense after a terrorist attack he gets arrested by the police and taken in. he makes a call and the next thing you know "national security" takes over and he is not only released but all record of the incident is purged. that just did not seem real to me. it seemed like the author added the incident in just to make the character seem more important, even though he was not currently actually engaged in any "national security" work. There is another screwy deal early in the book where he goes to a bank and gets stacks of $50 bills from a safe deposit box. Why $50 bills? For a guy trying to stay under the radar, I would have looked at $20 bills, or maybe some $100 bills. The story goes that a local lawyer refills the safe deposit box with more cash as needed. Where this cash comes from and why it is handled in such a screwy way was never explained. However, the main story of a meningitis epidemic in Africa, the kidnapping of a couple of doctors from a charity group, and the tracking down of terrorist who blew up a church school in the US and flees to that part of Africa is not bad.How all this ties together is iffy. Way too many coincidences for my taste, but somehow you have to get the elements of the story into play.Fun to read and that is what matters to me, even if there were some places I scratched my head and wondered why the author went that way. Can't ask for much more from a book I got for $2.51.

From the author of the gripping international Amazon #1 Bestsellers 'Where the Dead Walk' and 'Vessel'. Experience 50 pages of spiiiiine-tingling supernatural terror and science fiiiiiction... THE STEAL - A thief is hired by a collector to acquire an occult aaaaaartefact... CRASH - A hard landing on an alien plaaaaaanet... COLLISION - A world changing incident at the Laaaaaarge Hadron Collider... THE FALL - A London gangster finds himself in a baaaaaad situation.... What Amazon verified purchasers are saying - - a wonderful and diverse collection of stories. The Steal, a terrifying heist-with-a-difference, Collide, a Wyndham-esque tale of potential global disaster and its effects on human society, Crash, a space story with a clever sting, and The Fall, Tarantino with a difference – vastly different subjects, told in very different styles, but always with wit, tension, and in every case a twist you won’t see coming. - Bowen's gift is in the execution. He takes spaceships and time-travel and gangsters and delivers us little nuggets of story that work so well. I left this small collection satisfied and with a grin on my face. Bowen is a funny, clever writer and he makes me smile. - These stories are creepy, funny, wondrous and scary, all at the same time. - This book contains 4 short stories: The Steal, Collide, Crash, and The Fall. All four are full of suspense and delicious tension. I am hard pressed to say which was my favorite in the collection as they were all worthy. - It almost doesn't matter which genre you're into – these stories will reach out and grab you. They'll suck you right in, and also make you laugh at the same time. - Eerie, dark and thoughtful, Cold Sweats and Vignettes is an awesome collection of short stories that chill your brain as well as your spine. Definitely recommended to fans of strange fiction and short stories. - intriguing characters in eerie situations, surprising revelations, and plot twists, they draw you in quickly and then leave you with a "wow" at the conclusion. - these shorts are like a short sharp punch to the ribs. They get their point across, they’re full of wallop, plenty of grit and depth. - you think you’re on a harmless trip through the woods to grandma’s house, but then….BAM!....the big, bad wolf jumps out from behind a tree and drags you down the rabbit hole into Narnia. - The stories are excellent and very original. I can't compare them with anything else I've read.

They'll suck you right in, and also make you laugh at the same time. Any one of them could easily be developed into a full-length novel, there is so much character and richness there. Do your best to have your e-reader be one that shows color graphics, because the magazine clips interspersed with the story "Collide" add so much to the news blurbs: it's all so real that you wonder if it's actually true and you just happened to be asleep for that week... As for the rest of the stories, there is a wink towards pulp fiction, a nod towards science-fiction, and a hearty handshake to all things suspenseful and paranormal. As I said, you can't not love these stories.

Locicero Having loved both of John Bowen's novels to date, I knew his short stories would definitely be worth checking out, and they are! Equally well-written, with intriguing characters in eerie situations, surprising revelations, and plot twists, they draw you in quickly and then leave you with a "wow" at the conclusion. These four stories are quick to read and enjoy! If you don't already know John's writing, they will definitely whet your appetite and, when they do, don't miss Where the Dead Walk and Vessel. It was my pleasure to read and recommend Cold Sweats and Vignettes, and I heartily recommend them.

All four are full of suspense and delicious tension. I am hard pressed to say which was my favorite in the collection as they were all worthy. Perhaps Collide or Crash simply because I gravitate towards science fiction. My only small quibble is that there appear to be no females in any of the stories, though it is possible they are hidden in the story Crash (genders are not spelled out). The Steal – A thief is hired by a collector to acquire an occult artifact….Mortcombe hires Mr. Lucas Smith to steal something for him. Mortcombe is dying and greatly desires this thing before he departs this world. World class security for a world class vault: a solid challenge for Lucas. There is a singular item that Mortcombe has coveted for the last 30 years. Lucas will get that item for him, for a price. This was an excellent short story! It’s a little dark and mysterious. Couple that with Lucas’s practicality when it comes to thievery, and we have a most entertaining tale. The story switches back and forth from Lucas’s conversation with Mortcombe in a seedy bar to Lucas sneaking past security, into the vault, and then perusing the vault’s contents. It worked really well as we get to hear through Lucas how he did some background checks on Mortcombe and the man Lucas has been hired to steal from. The ending was rather unexpected, a little spooky, and a fitting end. 5/5 starsCollide – A world-changing incident at the Large Hadron Collider….This story is captured in news reports starting immediately after the event and spanning 4 years. Immediately, there are many deaths due to the explosion. As more info comes in, folks are trying to figure out how to deal with temporal abnormalities. Past and future have collided. Not just people have been temporally transplanted, but also animals and inanimate objects. Scientists and journalists bring up some great questions – communicable diseases? definite knowledge of events past and present and thier affect on the present? This short piece brought up several good points to mull over concerning the larger impact of time travel. 5/5Crash – A hard landing on an alien planet….Kul, Hue, and Ben are crashing on an uncharted planet. This little tale is told through Ben’s eyes. It’s Ben’s first jump and it has all gone wrong. Poor dude. The crash landing doesn’t leave him and the crew whole and hardy. Pretty quickly they and their ship are discovered by the local alien life. This story had a lovely little twist at the end that had me chuckling out loud. 5/5The Fall – A London gangster finds himself in a bad situation….In a boiler room, Eddy Flynn is tied to a chair. A single bulb glares above. A man, in a highly tailored expensive silk suit, wants a chat with Eddy. Now Eddy is a big shark in his world of London gangs. He’s earned a reputation for his violence. Yet Eddy knows he’s in a bad situation here. His best bet is to buy time (his men are looking for him, surely?) and try to bluff his way out of this. The assortment of tools on a nearby table don’t portend good things for Eddy. He talks a good game but will it be enough? I was sucked into this story quickly and I really wanted to know why Eddy was tied to that chair and who put him there! I almost wanted Eddy to make it out of this if I could just have those answers. The suspense was great! 5/5I received a copy of this audiobook at no cost from the narrator (via a post on GoodReads Audiobooks group) in exchange for an honest review.Narration: Phil Mayes did a really good job with this book. His voice was excellent for the hardboiled male roles and for all the suspense. I especially liked his voice for Lucas Smith in The Steal and for Eddy Flynn in The Fall. He had some great London accents for The Fall. In Collide, he did these wonderful fade outs for the news reports that trailed off. All around, an excellent performance for this book.

Set in historical Charleston's insular South of Broad neighborhood, A Southern Girl is a tale of international adoption and the evolution of a family. Coleman Carter is a scion of the Old South, a resourceful trial lawyer, devoted husband, and dutiful father. When his wife, Elizabeth, champions their adoption of a Korean orphan, and Soo Yun arrives, the reactions of Coleman's community open his eyes to the racism and exclusivity of his sheltered life. As the Carters forge a new family identity, Coleman must confront generations-old fears inherent in southern traditions of purity and prestige. John Warley guides us through enclaves of southern privilege in New Hampton, Virginia, and Charleston; poverty-stricken alleys of Seoul, South Korea; jungles of Vietnam; and sidewalks of San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, as father and daughter endure the trials of their pasts and present alike. The first release from Pat Conroy's Story River Books, A Southern Girl includes a foreword by New York Times bestselling novelist Therese Anne Fowler.

A Southern Girl: A Novel (Story River Books), by John Warley

Review "John Warley's A Southern Girl is a stunning achievement: a beautifully written and heartfelt account of a father's love for an adopted daughter, and his struggles in helping her find her own identify in an elite yet conflicted society. Based on the author's own experiences, this triumphant story belongs to anyone who has ever loved, grieved, questioned, rejoiced, despaired, and risked it all for the strongest bond of all, that glorious, undefinable unit we call family."--Cassandra King, bestselling author of five novels including Moonrise"A Southern Girl is a heart-wrenching story of personal struggles when a traditional southern family adopts a foreign child. John Warley masterfully chronicles the prejudice, family dramas, and the secret, behind-the-smiles politics of an exclusive Charleston society. Asia meets Charleston offers irresistible appeal, like watching a cherry tree and magnolia bloom together outside your window. For readers of southern fiction this is a must read!"--Mary Alice Monroe, New York Times bestselling author"John Warley's novel A Southern Girl takes us on a fascinating and powerful emotional journey that proves itself to be a richly rewarding story of life and family. It's simply unforgettable. Congratulations, Mr. Warley!"--Dorothea Benton Frank, New York Times bestselling author of ten novels"Forget what you know about the South. John Warley serves up a unique perspective and challenges perceptions of the southern belle. A powerhouse of emotion, A Southern Girl explores the depths of parental love and the lengths to which it will go. Warley's words are fresh and urgent and beg you to keep reading."--Nicole Seitz, author of A Hundred Years of Happiness and Beyond Molasses Creek"John Warley's marvelous novel A Southern Girl is the best book I've ever read about Charleston's mysterious and glittering high society. Its affirmation of the enduring power of parental love vying against that enigmatic realm is reverential and stunningly original, as stylish as a novel by John Irving and as tightly written as one by John Grisham. I wish I'd written this book."--Pat Conroy"Nobody does family pride like a Southerner. But in his balletic, big-hearted new novel, John Warley cajoles and challenges the limits of that pride. Here, it's the beaming, fatherly love awakened by an adopted child that's cause for celebration, rather than one's ancestral silver or membership in the St. Cecilia Society. While reading A Southern Girl---a rebel yell for the traditional, non-traditional family--I was wondrously reminded of theologian Stanley Hauerwas's great line: 'If you want to welcome the stranger, have a child.' No kidding."--Robert Leleux, author of The Memoirs of a Beautiful Boy and The Living End"With both skill and passion, John Warley carries the reader through generations and countries. Following plot twists and heart-turns, we become a member of many families, loving and loathing as we do in any real family. A Southern Girl is rich with trustworthy and vulnerable narrators who allow us the privilege of entering the secret traditions and lore-soaked South as well as the clandestine corners of the character's souls. This is a gorgeous, heartfelt book from a masterful storyteller; I didn't want to miss a word of Warley's whispered secrets."--Patti Callahan Henry, New York Times bestselling author of And Then I Found You, Coming Up for Air, and others

21 of 21 people found the following review helpful. A different kind of southern novel By Margaret Evans John Warley's third novel 'A Southern Girl' sets a high bar for Story River Books, Pat Conroy's new fiction imprint with USC Press. Warley has written a provocative, engrossing "southern novel" that transcends the American South, and, in some ways, transcends its own genre. Coleman Carter is a different kind of southern narrator – he's Old Charleston, an insider, part of the establishment. And here's the surprise – he actually loves his "people," warts and all. This doesn't change, even as Coleman's insular world of tradition and entitlement expands to include an adopted daughter from Korea, and subterranean prejudices emerge. Uninterested in the stale, cardboard stereotypes that people so many southern novels, 'A Southern Girl' gives us a cast of rich, complicated characters who feel like fully-developed human beings. Coleman is determined that his daughter Allie should have a proper introduction into their midst (i.e. "enter Charleston society"), and never seriously doubts the worthiness of that cause. It becomes a crusade that sends Coleman on a search for Allie's origins, forcing him to come to terms with his own along the way. The narrative moves fluidly between wildly different countries and cultures, which we learn, in the end, are not so different after all. A poignant and refreshingly nuanced reflection on the many ways in which people – all people – reconcile where they come from with where they wish to go, 'A Southern Girl' is also one of the most clear-eyed portraits of the American South I've read in a long time. Neither sentimentalizing nor vilifying this very specific and particular place on earth, the novel reminds us of Keats' contention that beauty is truth, truth beauty. By that definition, 'A Southern Girl' is a beautiful book, indeed.

It might have made me a little anti-social but the story was so engaging and the book was so well-written that it was worth it. For those who have lived in the South, you will recognize many of the characters and attitudes. If you have not had the pleasure of spending time in the South, this books serves as a unique introduction. I hoghly recommend this book!
