1759. Lady Sarah Lennox arrives at Holland House and at just fourteen years old is swept into society and hailed as the beauty of London. She is fated to catch the eye of the young Prince of Wales, the future King George III, and they begin a romance which is as all-consuming to the young lovers as it is forbidden by George’s advisers when he ascends to the throne. For Sarah’s political connections make her an unsuitable choice in the eyes of the King’s controlling mother, Augusta Saxe-Gothe, and Sarah begins the battle that will engage in her whole life – to find love in the face of enormous odds. Amid the turmoil of her royal romance, Sarah has disturbing visions – a young woman with flame-red hair appears at her bedroom door one night, and this ‘ghost’ makes itself known at crucial moments throughout her life. Sidonie Brooks, a talented musician who specialises in the eighteenth-century harpsichord, moves into a flat near to Holland House in the late twentieth century. There she begins to have strange, inexplicable episodes in which she seems to step through time and witness the life and intrigues of a beautiful young woman. Sidonie is just beginning to reach a new level in her career, even as she is torn between her handsome neighbour, Dr Finnan O’Neill, and the Russian musical prodigy Alexei Orlov, and as she tries to unravel the mystery of her visions of Sarah Lennox. As Sarah’s life of romance and scandal begins to interweave with Sidonie’s musical and romantic awakening, the two young women will find their lives running along extraordinary parallels, as they both seek the ultimate happiness of love. ‘As Shadows Haunting’ is a sweeping, romantic historical novel, bringing to life the eighteenth century through the haunting tale of Lady Sarah Lennox. ‘She has a strong sense of history and an uncanny ability to bring it to life’ – Daily Mail ‘Sympathetically told, and the lives of the twin heroines touch and part in a very convincing manner’ – The Times Deryn Lake started to write stories at the age of five then graduated to novels but destroyed all her early work because, she says, it was hopeless. A chance meeting with one of the Getty family took her to Sutton Place and her first serious novel was born. Deryn was married to a journalist and writer, the late L. F. Lampitt, has two grown-up children and lives in Mayfield, Sussex, with two large cats. She is also the author of ‘Sutton Place’, ‘To Sleep No More’, ‘The King’s Women’ and ‘Pour The Dark Wine’. Great time slip By Misfit "And it had been the dark looks of both Charles Stuart and his French lady that had passed through the generations to Sarah Lennox, making her, at fourteen, already one of the great beauties of her day."Gosh this was good, and definitely one for fans of the time-slip books. The present day story was centered around a musician who has recently moved into a flat next to the ruins of Holland House and she starts falling back in time to see visions of Lady Sarah Lennox, a great beauty who apparently caught the eye of the young George III."To say that he gazed was an understatement. His Majesty positively stared, while Sarah, a born coquette if ever there was one, looked at him from beneath lowered lashes and dropped a small curtsey in acknowledgment of his attention."History is written and we all know George didn't marry Sarah, but she led quite a fascinating life, and at times a very sad one. You can certainly look up her story on Wiki, but I don't recommend it too close to reading the book - you'll spoil yourself.I really enjoyed both the past and present day storyline, and thought the time-slip element well done and believable. I hadn't heard of Lady Sarah before, so also appreciated a glimpse into her life and I'm looking forward to reading more. I also liked the closer look into George's life, especially as a young man. What if he'd been able to marry Sarah and how different history might have been? Bonus points on using the time slip element to make such a ending for the baddie in the present day. Such lovely just desserts :)

Not really a romance By Kindle Customer While I appreciate the author's dedication to historical accuracy, this book was disjointed and lacked a clear focus. I think that the author attempted to make it a love story, but in Sarah's story, aside from the King, there were just too many men in her life for the reader to ever connect and feel a storyline of true love and passion. In the modern day love storylines, I think that there was too much indecision to ever capture or evoke feelings of longing or angst. The time travel, if it can even be called that, was so poorly executed that it made no sense at all to even have it. It didn't benefit the story or the characters at all. It would have been better if Sidanie simply read the documents instead of showing up randomly back in time. Overall, I wish that the author had stuck with her original intent and focused on George III. His storyline seemed to have the most potential.

Washing the Dead by Michelle Brafman was that novel.Washing the Dead is a Jewish mother-daughter story. And a Jewish grandmother-mother-daughter trilogy. The heart of the story is Barbara Pupnick Blumfeld, a suburban mother who grew up an integral part of a small Orthodox synagogue in the Midwest. The novel shifts back and forth between the present and the past, reaching back into Barbara’s idyllic childhood. Her best friend is the rabbi’s daughter, her mother is one of the congregation’s most involved members and the young Barbara Pupnick is confident about her place in the world.Barbara’s life implodes when her mother’s affair with a non-Jewish employee of the synagogue becomes common knowledge in their tight-knit community. Reeling, Barbara leaves Orthodoxy, leaves her Milwaukee home and begins to piece together a future without her community. Barbara’s relationship with her elusive mother June, whose presence in Barbara’s life waxes and wanes, is the knotty quandary that gradually disentangles in this beautifully crafted novel.Although Barbara is not religiously observant in her adult life, elements of Orthodox life are woven through the novel. Decades after the breach with her Orthodox past, the Rebbetzin (rabbi’s wife) of her childhood beckons Barbara back to the community to participate in the tahara, the ritual washing of the body before burial, of a popular and well-loved teacher who inspired her career. This is the first of three washings in Washing the Dead. Each washing brings Barbara closer to uncovering her mother’s secrets and healing the wound that threatens her relationship with her own daughter.Washing the Dead introduces readers to the Jewish ritual known as tahara, performed prior to burial. A tahara includes respectful cleaning, ritual washing and dressing of the body of the deceased in specially prepared shrouds, called tachrichim. Brafman describes the solemn, prayerful tahara ritual in rich detail in the book’s final chapter. If you savor stories of family secrets and forgiveness that touch your heart, Washing the Dead by Michelle Brafman is a novel to cherish.http://jewishvaluescenter.org/jvoblog/washing-the-dead

Washing the Dead By KarenRachel I was immediately engrossed by this story about Barbara, a kind-hearted, middle class woman who grew up in the Orthodox Jewish community in Milwaukee. Barbara had an early idyllic childhood, shielded from hardship, deep into connection with friends and Jewish community, when she finds out a secret about her mother with devastating impact. Washing the Dead is about how the fallout from this secret has shaped Barbra's current relationship with her adolescent daughter and her aging mother. I was particularly gripped by the relationship between the teenage Barbra and her mother especially as her mother becomes increasingly despairing and disconnected from the family. Witnessing Barbra carry the burden of her mother's secret and her subsequent breakdown, while trying to care for her was heartbreaking. These sections of the book felt very immediate to me and I could feel the dread that Barbara experiences as anger and fear divide mother and daughter until her mother leaves the family and Barbara moves out to begin her own journey as an adult. The second part of the book shows how Barbara, overwhelmed by her mother's aging and subsequent move closer, and her worry that her daughter will carry the legacy of depression and poor decision making into the next generation almost falls apart. This part of the book felt somewhat flat to me. It was moving to read about how the rabbi's wife reached out to the adult Barbara to take responsibility for the ways that Barbara became somewhat of an outcast in the temple, and help her understand her mother better yet some sections felt distant and not as riveting as the childhood story.I loved the title of the book and all it implies about how Barbara took care of her mother and herself, along with the rabbi's wife and others. I saw it as a gift; to her mother's imperfect life, to her own growth and ability to forgive and her own wise daughter's counsel during this time.Thank you to Edelweiss for allowing me to read this book for as honest review.

Stankus I first met Michelle Brafman's book, Washing the Dead, as a reviewer for the 2015 Gaithersburg Book Festival and it was my #1 choice of all the new books I reviewed. I liked it so much that I went out and purchased a copy for myself.Washing the Dead tells the story of a young woman ripped away from her religious community for her mother's indiscretion (carrying on an affair with the religious order's groundskeeper) that she walked in on -- but not is all as it seems as you will find out after you read the book. The mother and daughter grew estranged only to be reunited many years later by the death of the young woman's mentor. Washing the Dead refers not only to the symbolic ritual of returning the body to the earth, but also to cleanse the bad blood and estrangement between mother and child. If there is one book to read this summer, it's Washing the Dead.(Side Note: I was walking in a farmer's market and overheard multiple people gushing about the book. It has the word-of-mouth buzz most authors could only dream of.)

Acclaimed New York Times bestselling author T.C. Boyle makes his Ecco debut with a powerful, gripping novel that explores the roots of violence and anti-authoritarianism inherent in the American character.

Set in contemporary Northern California, The Harder They Come explores the volatile connections between three damaged people—an aging ex-Marine and Vietnam veteran, his psychologically unstable son, and the son's paranoid, much older lover—as they careen towards an explosive confrontation.

On a vacation cruise to Central America with his wife, seventy-year-old Sten Stensen unflinchingly kills a gun-wielding robber menacing a busload of senior tourists. The reluctant hero is relieved to return home to Fort Bragg, California, after the ordeal—only to find that his delusional son, Adam, has spiraled out of control.

Adam has become involved with Sara Hovarty Jennings, a hardened member of the Sovereign Citizens’ Movement, right-wing anarchists who refuse to acknowledge the laws and regulations of the state, considering them to be false and non-applicable. Adam’s senior by some fifteen years, Sara becomes his protector and inamorata. As Adam's mental state fractures, he becomes increasingly schizophrenic—a breakdown that leads him to shoot two people in separate instances. On the run, he takes to the woods, spurring the biggest manhunt in California history.

As he explores a father’s legacy of violence and his powerlessness in relating to his equally violent son, T. C. Boyle offers unparalleled psychological insights into the American psyche. Inspired by a true story, The Harder They Come is a devastating and indelible novel from a modern master.

The Harder They Come, by T.C. Boyle

Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of April 2015: It is a testament to T.C. Boyle’s worldview and authorial skill to say that, while The Harder They Come is not always a taut narrative, it is a book that embraces the reader and takes him where he’s supposed to go. After opening with a tightly-plotted set piece (in which one of three main characters kills a local bandit after his cruise ship lands in Costa Rica), the novel settles down into a more leisurely pace. We are introduced to Sten, a seventy-year-old former marine (he killed the bandit), who lives in Mendocino County, California with his wife Carolee. He’s not particularly proud of what he did in Costa Rica, even if it garners him a little local acclaim. Sten is more concerned about his twenty-something son, Adam, who calls himself Colter after the real-life, wilderness-inhabiting guide for Lewis and Clark. Adam/Colter, who is living in the woods and descending into some serious mental health issues, has taken up with Sara Jennings, a fortyish woman inclined toward libertarianism. The other thing that Sten is concerned about is a group of local drug mules who are poisoning the forest around his community and generally raising havoc. These concerns conspire to lift the pace of the novel around the midpoint, where violence starts its inevitable creep back into the story. Reading The Harder They Come works on two levels—it’s a fun, thoughtful novel and it’s a darker rumination on the intersection between the myth of the west and the reality of it. This is an enjoyable novel that balances story with big ideas. The more I think about it, the more in awe I am of Boyle’s talent. – Chris Schluep

Review “The Harder They Come has no solutions to the delusions and dysfunctions it portrays. But it taps memorably into something deeply skewed in the American psyche.” (The Oregonian (Portland))“[T]hrilling… Boyle can paint a scene in vibrant colors…. [with] characters, who, to his credit, occupy a dark space between psychosis and Americana...” (Entertainment Weekly)“...A full-throated Harley Davidson of a novel... using some of fiction’s least fashionable attributes, social realism, pointed action...to brilliantly dissect America’s love affair with violence…[Boyle’s] prose manages to be both vivid and sharp, patient and pressing.. Boyle’s writing never loses energy or descriptive power.” (Los Angeles Times)“...Boyle tellingly explores the anger, paranoia, and violence lurking in the shadowlands of the American psyche. A powerful and profoundly unsettling tale.” (Library Journal (starred review))“This new work of fiction from Boyle presents a fractured threesome: a 70-year-old ex-Marine, his troubled son and the son’s older girlfriend-a right-wing anarchist. A dark novel, The Harder They Come explores violence and the American psyche.” (Houston Chronicle)“T.C. Boyle again explores his favorite territory, the American psyche, in , a gripping novel about an aging Vietnam vet and his mentally unstable son, out in April.” (Tampa Bay Times)“When precisely...does T.C. His upcoming novel describes a mentally ill young man involved with a group of violent anarchists.” (Washington Post)“The latest from a prolific and acclaimed novelist, The Harder They Come is a family saga that maps the relationships between the three people at its heart, as their potent mix of violence and paranoia urges them toward tragedy.” (Huffington Post)“Written with both clarity and compassion, each of the novel’s characters inhabits a rich and convincing private world. As they traverse a landscape none of them control, their haunting stories illuminate the violent American battle with otherness.” (Booklist)“New York Times-best-selling author T.C. Boyle explores the volatile relationships between an aging veteran, his unstable son, and the son’s much older lover in The Harder They Come.” (Buzzfeed, 27 Of The Most Exciting New Books of 2015)“A maximalist scribe of gothic melodrama, Boyle takes you on a manhunt through Californian pot groves, grisly Caribbean cruises, and Orwellian animal shelters before landing in horribly familiar territory: a disillusioned psychotic white guy with a gun. Still, plenty of sex, booze, and satire to lighten things up.” (GQ)Fifteen years ago, Boyle told The Paris Review that he was ‘writing novels of social engagement...These same concerns appear in The Harder They Come... It is not a cheerful book. The best ones never are.” (Newsweek)“Set in Northern California and rooted in actual events, The Harder They Come is a meditation on violence, specifically in the context of American history and culture. The text examines the connections between three damaged and explosive yet sympathetic people.” (Brooklyn Daily Eagle)“The Harder They Come is the 66-year-old Boyle’s 15th novel, displaying his characteristic energy, smart cultural references and talent for physical description. It’s the emotional element that takes second place here, though, leaving an unfinished feel to the work.” (Cleveland Plain Dealer)“Boyle is a genius at capturing social microcosms and excavating emotions simmering beneath the surface of contemporary America...A gripping and revelatory tale.” (BBC Between the Lines)“...The pendulum swings back to high-adrenaline zaniness and pertinacious, destructive misfits. Individualism remains central, but unlike San Miguel, it’s far from contemplative. It is a juggernaut, twisted to borderline psychotic.” (BookPage)“[S]tunning… It’s gripping, funny and melancholy…The Harder They Come is a masterly - and arresting - piece of storytelling, arguably Mr. Boyle’s most powerful, kinetic novel yet.” (Michiko Kakutani, New York Times)“[A] searing and masterful account of American violence and disaffection.” (San Francisco Chronicle)“[M]arvelous… thrilling, intense... [T]he story and the characters...are amazing. Early in his career, Boyle could be pointlessly intense... His late style...is something to behold; it has the same verve and pace, but in service now to an adroit realism. ” (USA Today)“Boyle’s tart and exuberant powers of description, of people and places, and his cheerful black humor are as exhilarating as ever.” (Minneapolis Star Tribune)“The Harder They Come is the 66-year-old Boyle’s 15th novel, and it displays his characteristic energy, smart cultural references and talent for physical description.” (Dallas Morning News)“Boyle always writes well and has never shied away from challenging issues.” (Houston Chronicle)“A gripping read and a powerful commentary on American themes of self-reliance and anti-authoritarianism… eerily prescient.” (The Brooklyn Rail)“In his 15th novel, the author of The Tortilla Curtain and Drop City probes the psyches of three combustible characters... Sparks will fly.” (Newsday)“Like the best of his work, Boyle’s no-frills narration makes for a fascinating journey up to the final page.” (Paste Magazine)“T.C. Boyle is a master at exposing the American psyche in his fiction. His new novel The Harder They Come is yet another stunning example, an engaging portrait of family, violence, and anarchy.” (Largehearted Boy)

The Mountain Man By Michael Jones The explorer John Colter, a member of the Lewis and Clark expedition and widely considered the first Mountain Man in America, famously once escaped a murderous mob of Blackfoot Indians through a series of maneuvers which is known now as Colter's Run. This legendary gauntlet, outlined in T.C. Boyle's novel, The Harder They Come, is just one the heroic feats which guide one of its main character, Adam Stensen, through his cracked existence. Adam identifies so much with the mountain man, he christens himself with his champion's surname; Colter: evocative not only of the explorer himself but of guns or horses or of the plow wheel it describes; an instrument used to cut through the earth. It seems the real John Colter lived his life in a far different environment, in a more brutal, less sensitive world; one which celebrated violence and aggression as much as it is misplaced today.Adam is the son of Sten Stensen, a seventy year old Vietnam vet and retired High School principal. The outset of Boyle's tale finds Sten and his wife, Carolee, vacationing down in Costa Rica where they find themselves on a "nature tour" traveling for too long over rough jungle terrain in a rickety bus full of their fellow slightly hungover tourists. When they finally arrive at their destination, the bemused travelers are set upon by a gang of three local thugs, one of whom brandishes a gun. In the confusion, Sten's military training prevails. Boyle tells us: "What he'd learned as a nineteen-year-old himself, a recruit, green as an apple, wasn't about self defense, it was about killing, and does anybody ever forget that?" Ineluctably, Sten is able to overcome the gun-toter, putting him in a choke hold and keeping him there, perhaps a bit too long, until the boy goes limp in his arms. The third character Boyle chooses to closely follow is Sara, a disaffected anarchist in her late thirties who just happens to cross paths with our anti-hero, Adam. She allows him first into her car, then into her life or should we say he allows her into his life. Either way it is a believable pairing given the age gap (15 years). Sara is perpetually at odds with the authorities, refusing to acknowledge their control over her sovereign self, not buying in to the contract with civil service (the police or the DMV). She cites the due process clause of the fourteenth amendment which allows for the principle of freedom of contract, the basis of laissez faire economics. This philosophy, however altruistic in her own mind, quickly leaves her life in chaos. Sara's embrace of Adam's free range lifestyle, which to her seems to emulate some sort of extreme off-the-grid survivalism, is at first blush a perfect fit. But sadly it becomes all too apparent just how little reality is a part of Adam's psyche. The Harder They Come, based on real events which transpired in Northern California a few years back, examines the interplay between these three deeply flawed characters, yet only by revealing their own decisive and responsible behavior; how one may affect or dissuade the other is really subtextual. Boyle lets the reader work that out. The tone of this work is somewhat somber and pessimistic. There is not much room for humor here as the author continues to ignore comically eccentric figures as he'd employed in the past (Mungo Park, John Harvey Kellogg); once again he eschews the biting satire which was so much a part of his early work (World's End, The Road to Wellville) in favor of more weighty material. In the case of The Harder They Come this is good news; for the veteran novelist and for his readers. It allows him to more thoroughly mine the quarry of human condition; to reveal the profound effect which society can impose on individuals, especially ones who happen to be mentally ill; Adam, though he fancies himself Colter, a modern Mountain Man, though his limbs are hard as stone from his incessant work in the deep woods beyond his home, and because of his condition, cannot impose himself in the real world without escaping from it. With this work, Boyle shows how guilt and shame can lead to rage or violence or perhaps most consequentially, inaction.~ 4.7 Stars

I'm a big fan of Boyle's but was hoping for more from this novel. The first part, with the scary Costa Rica tourist incident, pulls you right in, and I was hoping we'd stay with this couple as main story. The inner voice of the deranged son was tiresome. The novel uses many different voices, and the plot keeps stepping a few paces back in time as it switches voices, which I found annoying. So a first person character will be describing an event as if just happening but you just read about already from another character and it seemed to be in the past. Stops the forward movement. Also I didn't believe the character of Sara, the farrier. It takes more than a little tool bag to shoe horses and exotic African ungulates. And after such an ungrateful review let me add he's still my favorite contemporary author! Worth reading, maybe it's just me.

7 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Don't miss this one By M. Feldman Oh my. This novel is flat out wonderful. T.C. Boyle is a great storyteller, and in “The Harder They Come” he is at the top of his form. The novel begins with the experience of Sten Stensen, an articulate retired high school principal who is on a cruise with his wife. Although he is a Vietnam vet, Sten has led a peaceful life since the war---until the moment a group of tourists on a shore excursion is attacked by thugs intent on robbing them. From this point, the novel shifts among three people: Sten; his mentally ill son Adam, who is obsessed with guns and survivalism; and Adam’s lover, Sara, an anarchist who refuses any interaction with a government she considers to be illegitimate. There is also a fourth character, since Adam calls himself “Colter” and channels the story of this hardened trapper of the Lewis and Clark expedition. The “Colter” character is a brilliant device for getting inside the mentality of the cold, unstable Adam. The novel is a compelling exposition of free-floating anti-government paranoia, from Sara’s refusal to wear a seatbelt to Adam’s intention (nurtured in adolescence by video games) to do as he pleases, without interference from other people, whom he calls “aliens” and “hostiles.”Boyle has written a book that does for murderous right wing fantasies what Phillip Roth’s “American Pastoral” did for murderous left wing fantasies. Neither book explains the American penchant for violence in the name of a utopia, but they sure do illuminate it.M. Feldman

All of us long to know what life after death will be like. Bestselling author John Burke is no exception. In Imagine Heaven, Burke compares over 100 gripping stories of near-death experiences (NDEs) to what Scripture says about our biggest questions of Heaven: Will I be myself? Will I see friends and loved ones? What will Heaven look like? What is God like? What will we do forever? What about children and pets? For decades, Burke has been studying accounts of survivors brought back from near death who lived to tell of both heavenly and hellish experiences. While not every detail of individual NDEs correlate with Scripture, Burke shows how the common experiences shared by thousands of survivors--including doctors, college professors, bank presidents, people of all ages and cultures, and even blind people--point to the exhilarating picture of Heaven promised in the Bible. This thrilling journey into the afterlife will make you feel like you've been there. It will forever change the way you view the life to come and the way you live your life today. You'll discover Heaven is even more amazing than you've ever imagined.

140 of 144 people found the following review helpful. Changed the way I look at, well, everything By Lisa Reid Imagine Heaven is so thoroughly researched that even a skeptic can see that Burke has thought of every angle. He's researched near death experiences (NDEs) from all sorts of people: those who have nothing to gain and a lot of credibility to lose (e.g., doctors), those from other faiths, those with disabilities here who have no disabilities in heaven, and those who had negative experiences after dying.I had a couple of secret beliefs about heaven that appear to be borne out in these accounts. I wondered if we would be the best version of ourselves (the energy of youth, the wisdom of experience, etc.), and that seems to be what people recount. We are still ourselves, and we still know the people who are important to us here. Another interesting point is that there is a life review -- a sort of highlight reel (or lowlight reel -- this ain't Facebook) of what you've done. You can see the ripple effects of your actions. That's something I've believed would happen, but it came with a surprise: those who had this experience didn't feel judged or condemned by God; on the contrary, any condemnation was self-inflicted.One of the clearest features of many of these experiences was being asked what one did with one's life... how well you loved others while on earth. It really does come down to the way Jesus simplified it for his followers: Love God and love people. All other laws or rules proceed from this.Words matter. Actions matter. The point of this life is to love others. Our choice to follow God (or our rejection of Him) has eternal consequences. But the choice is entirely ours; He has given us the free will to choose or to reject Him.Imagine Heaven has encouraged me to try to see others through God's eyes -- His love, mercy, and grace. Naturally I fail at this daily. But knowing a little about the amazing place that God has prepared for us makes me see this life differently, in the best possible way.Disclaimers: I finished reading an advance copy of this book a couple of weeks ago. I agreed to write an honest review. John Burke is my pastor of 18 years and a friend. However, if he'd written a dud, I'd be honest about it. Currently this ranks as my favorite of Burke's four books.

Dad was a born-again Christian and served the Lord his whole life. I have been a Christian nearly 40 years. Despite this, I had such overwhelming grief over losing my precious dad. I don't know if it was sadness, exhaustion, irrational thinking, or what, but even though I knew he was in Heaven....at the same time it didn't seem real to me somehow - I couldn't grasp onto that peace and find that solid ground. It was confusing to me to wander in the fog of grief and despair that seemed inescapable. What was going on? Where was my peace and assurance? I prayed that the Lord would indeed lead me to that place of peace that passes all understanding. I saw this book on Fox and Friends, and ordered it immediately. When it arrived, I was reading it within minutes. Just a couple of chapters in, I had that overwhelming peace I was seeking. It was if Jesus Himself was speaking to me through this book and through Scripture. It changed my view of Heaven, of what Christ longs for in those of us here on Earth, and of death for those who are Christians. Truly, we do not mourn as those who have no hope! This book will bring great comfort - and a glorious preview of what awaits the Believer! The alignment between near death experiences and Scripture is so powerful! Not that we desire to die.....but this book will make you excited about going to Heaven one day! God is so loving and has so much in store for eternity for those who accept Jesus as Lord.

60 of 64 people found the following review helpful. but what they describe is so incredibly beautiful and how they describe the actual "nearness" of heaven ... By Nicole R Williams I'd never given much thought to the physicality of heaven, but the way John unpacks the experiences of NDErs to what is actually written in Scripture has brought it to life in a way I've never been able to previously envision. Story after story after story give glimpses into a place I'd previously only thought about as Far, Far Away, but what they describe is so incredibly beautiful and how they describe the actual "nearness" of heaven gives me pause about that.I appreciate that John especially chose people to interview who often had nothing to gain &/or something to lose by sharing their stories, as that adds an extra layer of validity to what they share. I've purchased 8 of these so far, and plan to buy more. Everyone to whom I've given them loves the book; this is definitely one that will be passed around as a "you HAVE to read this book!".Now if you will, Imagine Heaven. :-)

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Another great read from this author. By English teacher The newest book in the Wilde Brothers series, featuring football star Jake Wilde, the youngest of the Wilde brothers. I have read all of the author's books and I really love her as a writer. I love her Friessen family books, but I also love her Wilde family books. These books are a series and need to be read in order. Jake is a football player and he loves his brother's sort of ex girlfriend. He asks her to marry him, but she says no and then he gets traded by his football team that he loves. Jake meets Chris, a really sweet girl who gives him some good, advice. They become friends and the story goes from there. I guess I am always excited whenever the author publishes a new book. I always pre-order them. I was excited to read about Jake and I loved this book. Jake and Chris and Jill and Samuel are real people. They don't act perfect, or do exactly what they should. Jake gets himself into his own mess, but that is real. He is a good person who is struggling with some issues. He is kind and loves fully. I can't wait to find out what happens next with Samuel's story continuing the series. The brothers' relationships with each other and their life interests are always complex. This author really makes you think. I would recommend it to anyone who loves a good story with real characters in real situations with HEAs. The only complaint that I had about this story was that it was too short. I would have loved to read some more.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Enjoyable Wilde Brothers short story By Bookzilla Enjoyable Wilde brothers short story. This one focuses on the division between Jake and Sam. Always believable characters, dialogue and story line. Deep emotions without devastating the characters.Lorhainne Eckhart always has take away truths."Jake learns that sometimes, what you wish for isn’t what you really want.""Jake wondered if he’d had to choke out the “good” part, as Murray and Bucky were about as friendly as two hounds circling the same 'female dog'.""You do know there’s a line you can’t cross, and you may not even be aware of it. Sometimes it helps to have someone else point it out to you, because when you’re emotionally in it, you can’t see the road ahead. You’re lost in this haze, you know? So I’m telling you because I’ve been there. My advice is to walk away."I will re-read this short story and always look forward to more works by this author.

It is sad two brothers a r e divided because of one lady. Jake gets traded and meets Chris. She had some of the same issues with a ex that Jake did with Jill. What started as friends became more. Chris was not selfish like Jill but cared more for how Jake felt. Almost to late Jake realized that Chris was his number one but he had to prove it.I hope Samuel and Jake can find their way back to each other in the next bookYay, for Jake and Chris.

Love and Decay has been one of my top 5 favorite book series and that is saying something because I am very picky with my favorites. I always highly recommend this series. Rachel is an amazing author and her characters have so much depth. You can't go wrong with this one.

This is a fairly easy read but I love the characters. Sometimes the plot seems somewhat unrealistic (who gets in that many bad situations), but I love this series nonetheless!
