NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY LOS ANGELES TIMES AND BUZZFEED • Taking place nearly a century before the events of A Game of Thrones, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms compiles the first three official prequel novellas to George R. R. Martin’s ongoing masterwork, A Song of Ice and Fire. These never-before-collected adventures recount an age when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne, and the memory of the last dragon has not yet passed from living consciousness.   Before Tyrion Lannister and Podrick Payne, there was Dunk and Egg. A young, naïve but ultimately courageous hedge knight, Ser Duncan the Tall towers above his rivals—in stature if not experience. Tagging along is his diminutive squire, a boy called Egg—whose true name is hidden from all he and Dunk encounter. Though more improbable heroes may not be found in all of Westeros, great destinies lay ahead for these two . . . as do powerful foes, royal intrigue, and outrageous exploits.   Featuring more than 160 all-new illustrations by Gary Gianni, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is a must-have collection that proves chivalry isn’t dead—yet.Praise for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms   “Readers who already love Martin and his ability to bring visceral human drama out of any story will be thrilled to find this trilogy brought together and injected with extra life.”—Booklist   “The real reason to check out this collection is that it’s simply great storytelling. Martin crafts a living, breathing world in a way few authors can. . . . [Gianni’s illustrations] really bring the events of the novellas to life in beautiful fashion.”—Tech Times

A Solinas One of the signs of a well-developed fantasy world is that the author isn't confined to the present -- they can spin stories from centuries ago, and it still fits their world perfectly. Such a tale can be found in the adventures of Dunk and Egg, which takes place a century before the events of George R. R. Martin's epic A Song Of Ice And Fire series. "A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms" brings together all three of those tales -- the story of a struggling hedge knight and his faithful yet snarky squire, both of whom are more than they appear. In "The Hedge Knight," Dunk has spent most of his life as the squire to an aging hedge knight. But his master eventually dies, leaving him a sword, some old armor, a pair of horses and a handful of coins. He is determined to make a name for himself at a tourney, and hopefully be hired by some lord -- despite the annoyingly outspoken boy named Egg who is following him, hoping to become his squire. But when Dunk arrives at the tourney, he finds that he's outmatched by everybody. He only need to score one win, but without armor he doesn't have a chance against the knights from powerful, aristocratic families. So he uses his wits to raise money... only to run afoul of a Targaryen prince when he defends a pretty puppeteer. Given the choice of losing his hand or trial by combat, Dunk chooses the less disfiguring option -- but that means he must find six allies to help him in the combat. And he might still lose his life at the end."The Sworn Sword" brings Dunk and Egg to Standfast, in service to Ser Eustace Osgrey. The land is in the middle of a horrifying drought, and when Dunk investigates the sudden drying-up of a nearby stream, he discovers that Osgrey's neighbor Lady Rohanne has built a dam to redirect a nearby river. There's a feud going on between Eustace and Rohanne, which will soon bloom into a vicious little war and the loss of Rohanne's lands -- and Duncan may be the only one who can resolve things once and for all."The Mystery Knight" sees Dunk and Egg entering an area full of political strife -- a rebellion some years ago has caused a lot of hostility towards the Targaryens. When invited to a wedding melee, Dunk decides to go as an unidentified "mystery knight" to avoid any people who might have heard of Ser Duncan the Tall... only to find himself and Egg the center of a conspiracy of murder, the theft of a dragon egg, and a brewing threat against his own squire.Compared to A Song Of Ice And Fire, the three stories of "A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms" are relatively light fare -- sure, they have plenty of gritty medieval atmosphere and a few tragic deaths, but these stories are positively fairy-tale-like compared to the dark stuff Martin usually writes. Don't worry, there's still plenty of political strife, mysteries, battles and the odd speck of the fantastical (a dragon's egg, a knight with precognitive dreams), but the main focus is on a simple hedge knight and his squire.Martin's writing is simple, but rich with descriptions ("Reeds grew thick along its edge, and a tall leafy elm presided over all. The spring grass there was as green as any knight’s banner and soft to the touch") and he writes some snappy dialogue between Dunk and Egg. Every story has an escalating story of political strife, with Dunk's seemingly simple existence repeatedly interrupted with the political repercussions of House Blackfyre -- he just wants to wander around and fight for whoever, sleeping under shady trees and eating salt beef, but he keeps being tripped up by the scars of the past. And the approach to Dunk is what makes these stories so gripping. The man is a mass of endearing contradictions -- a gentle teenager who is also a powerful fighter, simple yet wise, intelligent yet straightforward, ambitious yet humble in those ambitions. His clear sight and good heart are what ultimately win people over to him, and even if he's kind of grumpy with Egg during the squire's more spoiled moments, there's not much actual bite to any of his complaints. And what of Egg? I won't reveal too much about this character's life, but he is a perfect counterpoint to Dunk -- a boy torn between the glamorous idea of being a squire, and the actual struggles it involves. He has a nimble intellect and a smart mouth, but sometimes shows a distinct lack of common sense compared to Dunk."A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms" is a delightful trio of side-stories for fans of the Song Of Ice And Fire series, and a solid introduction to the land of Westeros for newcomers. And of course, it leaves you wanting to hear about more adventures of Dunk and Egg.

Great compilation prequel to Song of Ice and Fire with incredible artwork By outwest This is a compilation of the first three official prequel novellas to George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire, and take place almost one century before Game of Thrones. Note the material is not really new: this compiles the three novellas "The Hedge Knight" (Legends), "The Sworn Sword" (Legends II) and "The Mystery Knight" (Warriors). For those who follow the series, these novellas are set in the time when the Targaryens still hold the Iron Throne. A great collection of all three stories, this compilation also adds over 140 pieces of original artwork which will surely be a hit for fans of Martin's written works.Though not as anticipated as the Song of Ice and Fire next installment, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is a nice look into the history of Targaryen rule. The book follow the friendship of "Dunk," Ser Duncan the Tall (future Lord Commander of the Kingsguard), and "Egg," (a pivotal character in the future). The story is similar to the knight-squire relationships found in Song of Ice and Fire (ie Brienne and Podrick) and reads similar to the Song of Ice and Fire series. The fantastic tale gives a deeper insight into the Seven kingdoms and the motivations for the people who are a part of them. Well written and with numerous new original illustrations, it is a great read.Any Martin fan who has not already read the novellas will certainly enjoy it, and the artwork alone is fantastic. It is an in-depth genealogical journey and character study, interwoven in classic Martin style. Other than the illustrations, it is not new, but for those new to this story line and for fans of original artwork related to the overall series, will enjoy A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.

I really liked this book and can't wait for the next.If you are expecting something like GAME OF THRONES you can go ahead and kill that expectation or put it on a shelf to languish. This book is delightfully different. In fact it reminds me of the historical classics like THE BLACK ARROW and IVANHOE. And if it wasn't for a handful of instances with naughty language the story would be suitable for 6th Graders on up. However it does use the C-word for lady bits and a few other choice words I can't recall at the moment, so it's not a book I'd hand to a youngster. (Editors, come out with a kid's version! You'll make more money)When I first began reading I wasn't sure what I thought but it wasn't long until I got caught up in Dunk and Egg's meanderings through the kingdoms. Dunk is a huge young man that is as close to an honest, chivalrous knight as you can come. Egg is a prince in hiding and then a prince in training as a Dunk's squire. As Dunk is a 'Hedge Knight', which is to say he freelances, they meander from job to job taking in the occasional tourney. They, of course, run across fair maids and evil doers. Adventures spring from politics, jealousy and greed, and the fact that Dunk is still learning his trade and finding his own way in the world. What makes the story so engrossing is that Martin knows his medieval stuff. He knows about the tournaments of the times, the weaponry, the garments, and even the food. All this serves to bring the story alive. And as I sit here typing this review I find myself wondering what Dunk and Egg are doing today. Which means that Martin has done his job admirable. He's made me like the setting and characters so much that I not only care about what great adventures they are working up to, but also about what they are doing when absolutely nothing much is going on.Recommend.~library find

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. THE MATCHMAKER FINDS LOVE !!! By jlswainsboro/Judy Lewis Wow! I must say, I'm more than a little intrigued by It Takes Two, The Matchmaker Series by Ellie Danes. This is the sixth and final installment of the serial and it is absolutely captivating and a brilliant continuation of the story. Yes, I said serial. This is not a stand alone story so readers, please be forewarned. Personally, I love serials. It's like watching my favorite weekly TV shows and if you have Kindle Unlimited like I do, then it's good as gold. So, now having said that, back to the story. It's exciting, fascinating, intriguing, romantic, sensual and arousing. There are a few editing errors which are a little distracting but over all the story is well executed and the dialogue is well written, intelligent and flows beautifully. The characters are captivating, engaging and sexy as sin. Danes skillfully combines these elements to craft an enthralling and intoxicating read. Harper is a 24 year old grad student barely making ends meet on her salary from her part time job at the bar. She has always been able to match up everyone but herself. She's just unlucky in love. Hopefully, this latest breakup fiasco with Jake will teach her a lesson. And now Jake won't leave her alone! He says he's sorry! Yuk! She always falls for the wrong guys. Maybe she's just looking in all the wrong places. And after attending a disastrous mixer with her best friend and roommate Avery, she's even more convinced that she's doomed to always meet the wrong guy. Yep, just cursed never to find love. What Harper couldn't know but hopefully will soon learn, she has been noticed by Mason Asher, the 'big cheese' of matchmakers. He's handsome, charming, wealthy and knows what he wants and usually gets it. And he very much wants Harper to come back to the mansion and is not above coercing her best friend Avery to get what he wants. As a favor to Avery, Harper returns to the mansion or as I like to call it, the lion's den, and Mason finally makes an appearance to introduce himself to the lovely Harper but only as Mason. He very conveniently neglects to tell her that he's the infamous "Asher". Oh my goodness! And now he wants her to work at the mansion but Harper still doesn't know who he really his. And just how does he think he's going to get away with that and not reveal his identity? Whatever his plan, he fails miserably and now he's done the one thing that Harper can never forgive. He's committed the cardinal sin, the colossal no-no of all time - he lied - albeit a lie of omission, it's still a lie to Harper! But is his interest professional or is it personal? I think we all know by now that it's more than just professional but how much more? Can he convince her to forgive him or will her ex-boyfriend Jake finally have his revenge? Hmmm....Well, I guess you'll have to read the series to find out and the entire series is already available! Fabulous entertainment and an awesome read!

I have become a huge fan of Ellie Danes since she started releasing these novellas. This was the final installment int he Matchmaker Series and I was sad to see it come to a close but the series itself was stunning for lack of a better word. It has been full of Suspense, Drama, Sex, it is very fast paced and complex, full of surprises and keeps you on the edge of your seat the entire time. Ellie Danes has this amazing talent for including the reader to make them feel like they are apart of the story and takes them along on the journey as the story line progresses. This story picks up right where the last installment ends Harper is frantically trying to determine what has happened with Mason and to her dismay Natalie is less than forthcoming with information. Harper is going through a rough time blaming herself for what is going on with Mason and his injuries, it is unclear as to whether Mason and Harper are going to be able to move past this and the events leading up to the current circumstances. I will say this was a quick read but a great read and a fantastic ending to the series!

Now he is given a second chance in life, and he is doing his best to change his ways. Colin has started college, works hard for his money and works out more than three times a day. And above all he is getting his anger issues under control.Maria is working hard in a respectable lawyers office. She studied hard all her life, visits her parents regularly and she is very close with her younger sister. To the outside world, Maria lives the perfect life.Colin and Maria couldn’t be more different, but when life throws them together there is an instant attraction they can’t deny. The thing with Nicholas Sparks his writing is that when you start one of his books you just need to keep reading until the book is finished. ‘See Me’ is no exception. From the very beginning, I was hooked to every page of this book. The setting is beautiful and the characters are very memorable. But what I loved most about ‘See Me’, is the way I really started to care for the characters and felt like I knew them. Although Colin doesn’t sound like a nice character when you first learn about his background, I really came to love him and especially the way he talks with people. Colin is honest against everyone and no matter what. Very impressive.Maria is a character I could really relate to.. She’s ambitious, works hard and she can worry about everything. And when she meets Colin, she really doesn’t know what to think of him. She doubts herself and above all she doubts the way she feels. I really enjoyed reading about Maria and especially the way she interacted with her family. The romance in this book is really sweet and touching and I really loved every minute of it. There is also a little mystery/thriller part going on in this book, and it really kept me hooked unto every single page.Yes, this is definitely another great story by Nicholas Sparks. And have you looked at that beautiful cover yet? I definitely recommend this book.. It’s amazing!

It’s actually, really good, with a high readability and passes the time quickly.I will be upfront; I’ve never seen a Nicholas Sparks movie, nor read a Nicholas Sparks book before; I’ve been doing my best to read a variety of books this year and changed genres. This was a pleasant read, quick, and moved fairly fast. I’m not much of a romance type of person, but even as someone who’s not into guys, the main protagonist Colin, was kind of dreamy. No, really, he actually was really dreamy. As a bad boy, MMA fighter, turned good, I thought that the character was a bit over played out in the initial chapters, but as it progressed, I found that he maintained likability and still kept my attention.A piece of me wanted to dislike the whole story; knowing that it was hitting on many of the romantic elements that I had stereotyped all of Nicholas Sparks books to be, but…it was good. Really good. Even the stereotypical family friend, with a fiancé, who embraces the bad boy, who said bad boy has a soft spot for, and vows that now harm will come to them, even they were perfectly written, well developed, and offered humor to the story in very genuine and sweet ways. I laughed out loud at them…I don’t do that, but they were so cute and added a dimension to the character of Colin. The female protagonist is well developed with some levels of depth that creates a significant amount of buy-in from the reader. I found myself rooting for her, and was happy with all of her resolutions that occurred in ways that support her character and kept rather true to who she was throughout the book. Maria has some fleeting encounters with sexual harassment, which comes up right away in the story. Sparks actually does a good job of mirroring oft-occurring responses, and does so in a really good way that stays away from self-blame, but also frames the emotional discomfort that (unfortunately) many women have felt in some work situations.Maria’s story is one that plays into the “thriller” aspect of the story, but, the book isn’t a “thriller,” it’s more like, a plot dimension with some action? I mean, it’s not really a thriller, there is foreshadowing very early on that gives background context to Maria’s past employment as a city prosecutor and some disgruntled individuals due to her work. I’m not really giving anything away, but the reader gets a “pool” of two/three individuals who are affiliated with the same case. Since the case is so far removed and buy-in to the persons affiliated with the case is minimal, in my opinion, it was more so a matter of, “Well…it’s one of them” without really needing a distinction of who it was; as they all were a blur associated with the same issue. However, the thriller aspects lets us spend more time with Colin making himself a bit dreamier and developing as a person. If I had only one piece of criticism; Colin is an MMA fighter, and it’s initially very central to his figure. However, I actually watch and follow a lot of MMA, and there is a disconnect between some of the training components and what Colin is doing. I had given up some hope that Nicholas Sparks really knew anything about MMA, but then he made a comment about an amateur fight sometimes getting a bit more brawl-like, which made me happy, as it’s true, but the relationships between fights and coaches and even training partners are really strong; so that aspect maybe a bit under played. Again, that’s just me, having that familiarity. I still liked it a lot.

I quit reading this at chapter 7 because I was so bored with the book. It seems he is trying to write to a younger audience where tattos, and fitness being the only qualities that count. Boring.. I returned the book unfinished.

Stir Me (Rouse Me Book 2), by Crystal Kaswell

About the Author Crystal Kaswell writes steamy romances with flawed characters. When she isn't writing, she is thinking about writing. Or watching way too many episodes of Law and Order in a row.

It's highway robbery and we are ALL committing the crime but it's fine, because this is what they wanted. This compendium alone save you more than $60 worst( probably more) and it only cost $36.00?(at least at the time I bought it) That alone is enough of a reason to buy. So much content for so little money, as is the case with the rest of the compendiums.I'm going to try stray away from as much spoilers as possible but excuse me now if i happen to spoil anything. This series continues to be fantastic. Characters gets more developed, stories get more wilder, and villains get maniacal. This new guy Negan, believe me when I say this (do not underestimate me) you are going to HATE this guy with every atom in your body. Every cell will yearn with anger. If you hated the Governor for any reason what so ever and couldn't him in the slightest bit, maybe you might not want to read this compendium after all. Negan is vile, evil, horrible, any synonym that derives from bad, he is that and so much more. There are times I wanted to rip out pages just because I didn't want his drawings there. When they put his character on the show, they are going to tone him down levels that weren't even known to be possible. Seriously, half his dialogue is F-bombs, the show probably begin to stray far away at this point in the comics more than it has even done. Makes me wish the show was on HBO instead of AMC.There are going to character deaths that are going to upset you, I'm warning you right now (I don't consider this a spoiler, considering this is TWD and nobody is safe, so you already knew this was coming) I say this now, don't get attached to anyone, because nobody is safe after this. You might even hate Kirkman for what he has done. He is going to test your emotional limits and I tell you this now, you might not be able to handle it.New characters get introduced, as is with TWD, some lovable, some dreadful. My favorite is still Paul Jesus Monroe and yes, I know, he got introduced into the end of the second compendium, but he develops into a much better character at the end of all this.In all honesty, I could sit here and write everything I feel about the TWD and this compendium and what the story has become so far, I could write 20 essays but I think there is limit to how much you can right on an amazon review, or maybe there isn't, who knows. I'm just trying to stray from spoilers as much as I can to let you enjoy it as much as possible.Regardless, if you love the world of TWD,and have made it this far, you are probably going to make it to the of this end as well. It's going to be another journey just like the first two. There will be ups and downs and moments of serious agonizing torment but you will get through this and you will throughly enjoy this. You have my wordAnd if not, you can just beat me over the head with Lucille.

Walkers/zombies, guns, violence, angry people, more violence, gore, blood, badass-ery, and scenes unfit for the TV show. I'd say this is a safe bet if you like at least 1/2 of the following video games: The Last of Us, Red Dead Redemption, Grand Theft Auto, Dead Island. and yes, this is insanely humongous (even more so than the other 2). Consists of issues 97-144; vol. 17-24.*There are 24 pages towards the back of the book that are messed up so that the graphics are cut off. It looks like they started printing it halfway across the sheet, so half the page is just white paper, and the other half has the graphics. I'm sure this was just the result of a poor quality control check from the first batch of these. I wouldn't let this deter you from getting it though (maybe just wait a few weeks so that they can correct the problem in their next batch of printing)

25 of 27 people found the following review helpful. Life After the Zombie Apocalypse is Nasty, Brutish, and Short—Or Is It? By H. P. The Walking Dead, Compendium 3 collects comics #97-144, the same comics collected in volumes 17-24. As you can see, it’s quite a bit fatter than the first and second compendiums, despite collecting the same number of volumes.MILD SPOILERS THROUGHOUTIt’s impossible to discuss almost 50 issues without getting just a little spoilery. I promise I won’t give away any more than necessary. Three is the best of the compendiums. Compendium One was frequently The Walking Dead at its best but a little uneven. Compendium Two suffered from The Walking Dead’s long post-Governor malaise. The Walking Dead has always been better with a villainous focus. It is, after all, at its core about the human heart in conflict with another human heart (which is slightly more Faulknerian than the human heart in conflict with the zombie heart). Or at least that is where it is most effective. The Walking Dead certainly isn’t, to my chagrin, about a fight against nature for survival (but put us city boys in the woods with no one to hand us food and we’d struggle mightily). The human heart in conflict with itself stuff is often very good in isolation, but it has never managed to give the story the same narrative force as squaring off against a big foe.Compendium Three picks up shortly after the introduction of the Saviors and introduces Negan (and Lucille), who makes the Governor look like a pansy (and has a better sense of humor). Thus begins a conflict that will span most of the compendium and get very, very bloody. It’s the first compendium set in “civilization,” with the main characters never wandering without a base. It appears at this point that we have permanent communities. It also features a long jump in time (roughly two years later). The comic finally admits to the realities of time. The survivors are now riding horses and have settled into a quasi-normal life. This, and the compendium, last just long enough to set up a new grand foe.
