Since the Chinese Civil War, Communist China has considered Taiwan—an island some 75 miles off its mainland coast—a renegade province. In 1979, the American Congress ratified the Taiwan Relations Act. The Act stipulated that the United States of America “...will consider any effort to determine the future of Taiwan by other than peaceful means a threat to the peace and security of the Western Pacific area, and of grave concern to the United States.” In 2005, the Politburo of the Communist Party of China announced the Anti-Secession Law. This Law authorized the use of force against Taiwan in the event of a declaration of independence or a threat to regional security. Take to the air, land, and sea in this military techno-thriller in which a patriotic and conquest-hungry Chinese general sparks an international crisis that clears the path to an invasion of Taiwan. Finding its Pacific bases and supercarriers under the gun, the United States scrambles to protect its charge. Though China seems to be the new Pacific power, American and Taiwanese warriors get to work in defense of freedom. The Chinese general, however, is willing to do all it takes to bring Taiwan back into the fold, even by risking a nuclear war. Extensively researched, this novel includes accurate American, Chinese, and Taiwanese equipment, tactics, and formations, and explores how a new Pacific war could play out. Journey with characters that include American aviators, diplomats, and officers; Chinese fighting for the glory of their country; and Taiwanese struggling to maintain the independence they hold so dear. I will admit this is the first book I have probably ever read in this genre, but if this book is indicative of what the genre is like, I am in. The author ensures that whether you are pro-military and know what you're talking about or the average person you can keep up with the book. The flow is excellent. It was an easier read than I was expecting given the genre and plot line.Just the right amount of technical details about things I was clueless about (he actually makes it feel like you are right in the cockpit of a plane in the middle of battle) mixed with non-techy stuff to make it that flawless read. The timing for it's release is also perfect. With the on-going turmoil in that area of the world, we all have the what-if going on in our heads, and this answers the what if with a high action plausible possibility.A great read for those who love the genre, as well as new-comers to it like myself.

As the title suggests, this book is about a battle over Taiwan. China considers Taiwan to be under Chinese jurisdiction and leads a full scale invasion to the island. Their aim is to gain full control of Taiwan. The United States is eager to protect their own interests in the Pacific and rushes to defend Taiwan. Stuck in the middle of all of this, the Taiwanese wish to be independent and are willing to stand up and fight for their rights. It won't be an easy struggle, as all sides are willing to do whatever it takes and continue to up the ante.China threatens nuclear attacks, and war breaks out all over the Pacific. There is war on several fronts with attacks being launched in the land, the air, and the sea. China refuses to back down as they fight for glory and for increased political influence and control. The United States is willing to defend their interests in the Pacific just as vehemently. And while both sides are playing the political chess board, Taiwan just wishes to be free. The author's extensive research really shows. The detailed descriptions add depth to the story and make all the scenes feel real, accurate, and complete. You will be placed right in the middle of the action and really feel like you are there. No detail is overlooked, and you will be treated to vivid and accurate descriptions of all the equipment, strategies, formations, and more.It is clear the author knows the subject matter extremely well. More importantly, you can also tell that he is very passionate about what he writes. Although this book is fiction, it is easy to forget as you read. You will feel like you are reading about real events, and it is very easy to get lost in the story. If you are at all interested in military stories and political events, Fourth Crisis is a must read. I would definitely recommend it!

Fourth Crisis By LA Howell Fourth Crisis: The Battle for Taiwan by Peter von Bleichert is a 223 page military techno-thriller written in third person, present tense. The plot is gripping and will have you hooked in the first few pages. It will be hard to put this one down. Bleichert clearly did his homework with such detailed knowledge of the navy, weaponry and large scale combat operations. His battle scenes jump right off the page and are completely realistic. Even the descriptions of China and Taiwan are vivid and easily imagined. The story unfolds as strained tensions between China and Taiwan heighten, and the U.S. intervenes to help their ally, the Taiwanese. The battle scenes and action will keep you turning the page. One thing that pleasantly surprised me was Navy officer, Lieutenant Cynthia Pelletier. I loved to see such a strong, determined, and well-developed female character in a male dominated genre. I would definitely recommend this book.

This book summarizes what the original book is about, lists and analyzes the book's characters and relationships, and analyzes the book's themes. I found the discussion on artificial intelligence to be particularly interesting. Will there someday be a world where machines are more intelligent than humans? Even though this is a summary, I was entertained the entire time I read the book. The story line is engaging, and I felt like it could easily be turned into a movie or television show.

In these four novellas, Nate Southard blurs the line between crime fiction and cosmic horror to create a unique and frightening style that is all his own. "He Stepped Through" – On an overcast day in Compton, a swath of violence hints at a greater, more ancient evil. Two crooked detectives, a young gangbanger, and a beat cop learn sometimes stepping through a door means it can’t be closed again. "Something Went Wrong" – A brokenhearted loner keeps finding body parts on his doorstep. A mysterious fixer thinks he may not be the right man for the job. Two friends find something strange when a drought reveals old secrets. Just another day in Texas. "Deeper Waters" – Surrounded by flood waters, redneck magician Charlie “Crawdad” Crawford seeks both revenge and redemption in a deserted diner. "Safe House" – A terrorist cell holes up in a remote cabin after a devastating attack on American soil. Something old and terrible waits in the woods, however, and it will destroy them one-by-one…if they don’t destroy each other first.

Seriously, come close and hear me well. This collection is one of the best things I have ever read.Understand, I read a LOT, and widely. Classics, genre, mainstream, quirky literary, screenplays, comics, poetry.....so I know whereof I speak when I say that this book is something special. Four stories so multilayered they feel like forty. Concepts that will stick to you, clinging to the inside of your skull as they grow there spreading and infecting your brain with the complexity that Nate Southard so deftly places in these words. The first story absolutely blew me away and I would love to see it go further, grow and become a full bore novel. The next three stories kept to the promise laid by the first, following it with all the awesome. If you are on the fence about this one let me push you over. Buy it and read it right now.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Gritty Cosmic Horror By Brian Fatah Steele Few books are ever exactly what I want them to be. It’s hard for an author to live up to the hype a reader can build in their own head. However, Southard had delivered everything I had hoped it would be. Four novellas of cosmic horror, all tempered with a gritty realism that make these tales uniquely told. A fascinating study in contrasts, a sort of celestial madness shown through a mundane lens, Southard throws you down in the dirt so you may look up into the emptiness beyond the stars. We start out with “He Stepped Through,” a police procedural turned supernatural. A local gang leader has found religion, but not with any familiar faith. Turning his gang into a cult, the streets run bloody as clues are pieced together to a horrifying conclusion. In “Something Went Wrong,” we follow three different narratives in a small town as a creature’s body in discovered on the shore. The man who put it there, those who want to remove it, and the man caught in the middle all share secrets. With “Deeper Waters,” an amateur mage, known in town for his abilities, is hired by the diner owner to keep the rising flood waters at bay. But the mage has a hidden agenda, both for the diner and for the things that swim in those waters. Finally, “Safe House” tells of a militia cell that gathers at a cabin in the woods, thinking to prepare for the fall of America. However, they are unprepared for what lives in the woods, in the shack a mile away, something older and grander the humanity, that uses them like toys.Southard’s work is both relatable and imaginative. There is a noir element while still being expansive, a bleak universe you readily swallow. I read this entire book in a single sitting, I was so engrossed with the prose, the characters, the ideas presented. Nate Southard has shown himself to be a fantastic author of cosmic horror with WILL THE SUN EVER COME OUT AGAIN? and I can’t wait to read more by him.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. this doesn't mean that southard doesn't stand on his own as a great author. He certainly does By G. Ridgeway I am a huge fan of Horror Fiction especially that which falls in the Lovecraftian camp of strange, cosmic horror. I am also a diehard fan of Laird Barron and stumbled across this book in my recommendations. And to my surprise it was forwarded by him.Though, even though laird Barron gives his stamp of approval in the forward, this doesn't mean that southard doesn't stand on his own as a great author. He certainly does, the thing I liked most about all four novella is how well developed they were, the second story, could have easily been turned into a full length novel, which would be great if he did. The second story is the only one which I have any gripes with, it felt like he spent a lot of time developing it and then it ended pretty soon. But even saying this, it was still a stroke of genius telling.Southard particularly is good at having several running characters and storylines running at the same time, and this is something which is hard to do, and even those authors that do this (Steven king comes to mind) spend so much time between characters that by the time you get back to the set you were reading before they aren't very clear in your mind. This Southard does not do, he spends just enough time between characters to keep there independent storylines running and moving the story forward, its like watching the same tale from different perspectives. Its done very well.I am particularly a fan of his concept of Cosmic Demagogy, "The great below" which we get a taste of in his first and last story, He comments in his end notes about each story, and states that he is thinking about playing and developing the idea more. Yes Nate! Yes you should, I think you are on to something quite good.Over all this author is a good writer, story teller, and it’s a real ease reading his stories which pulls you in all the further. I really look forward to further offerings from him in the future, and I highly recommend this book!

It was 1934; the time of the Great Depression and Keith Watts was living a simple life and doing a simple job driving his train on the Southern Line. It was the uncomplicated existence he chose where he was in control and there was little possibility of being hurt again. Then he does a reckless thing by stopping his train to pick up a little, roving girl on the uphill run to Gooseneck Pass. He follows this with even more folly when he decides to accompany the girl on her quest to find a rich grandmother she has never met. Armed with scanty resources, they set out on foot on a journey that has Watts doing things he never imagined and feeling things he tried so hard to escape. Has the strange, shy girl with the weird way of expressing herself, touched his life and the lives of others they meet along the way? Or is a series of coincidences forcing the changes? And just how far can love transcend all barriers? A story packed with drama, mystery, adventure, and humor.

Review "I liked the idea of this story as well, that good could triumph over evil. There were a lot of morals incorporated and encouraged throughout, like hard work and not giving up and helping your neighbor even when you don't have a lot yourself. I really appreciated the morals displayed. I also appreciated the simplicity of this story. I think that made the story believable. I loved the way the characters interacted with each other and felt that really kept the flow of the story going. The conversations between the two characters were fresh and helped move the story along. It wasn't a deep or hard read; it was a much more enjoyable and easy read. This book was interesting and educational but not over the top, which was appreciated."Reviewed by Janelle Fila for Readers' Favorite

Self-Efficacy: inspiring ideas that can motivate students By Laura Gibbs Laura Ritchie's very practical book on self-efficacy can provide any teacher with a great new perspective on learning, a perspective which will resonate very strongly with teachers who are interested in growth mindset and student-centered education. Ritchie begins with an overview of the theory of self-efficacy and classic research by Bandura et al., and she then offers abundant real-world examples to show how self-efficacy can propel student learning in all kinds of settings and in all kinds of subject areas. She includes a wide range of case studies that will be useful and inspiring for teachers who might just be starting to explore this type of learning, answering basic questions and addressing common concerns, while also providing novel and inspiring ideas for teachers who are already avid proponents of self-efficacy and growth mindset. I knew something about Laura Ritchie's work from reading her blog and following her other online activities, and this book has given me a deeper appreciation for the importance of self-efficacy for all learners. Highly recommended!

About the Author Ruth Price is a Pennsylvania native and devoted mother of four. After her youngest set off for college, she decided it was time to pursue her childhood dream to become a fiction writer. Drawing inspiration from her faith, her husband and love of her life Harold, and deep interest in Amish culture that stemmed from a childhood summer spent with her family on a Lancaster farm, Ruth began to pen the stories that had always jabbered away in her mind. Ruth believes that art at its best channels a higher good, and while she doesn't always reach that ideal, she hopes that her readers are entertained and inspired by her stories.

Cora took a detour when she went on Rumspringa (read book 1) and when she came home she had trouble fitting back in to the community because everyone knew how badly her Rumspringa had gone. She also felt God had left her. Isaac, however, still loved her and asked several times for her to become his wife.Cora loves Isaac but just cannot say yes because that would mean baptism and she was not ready for that. Many things happen to lead Cora towards Isaac: a fire which burned enough of her hair that she had to cut it short, a day trip to New York City to help another Amish girl, seeing Isaac be kissed by another girl, having an actual fist fight with that same girl and finding out Isaac had seen the whole thing.I have enjoyed reading this book, as well as the first two books. In my opinion, it is definitely worth recommending to anyone.

Before I begin my review, I want to briefly describe my exercise background so that it will be more helpful for the people who read my review. I am a young male who has been exercising for the past 9 years of my life. During my journey in the fitness world, I have come across a wide array of exercise and fitness books. My bodybuilding/exercise literature arsenal is immense (I have literally read the majority of exercise books out there), and I have tried almost every program as well. Just to give some people out there an idea, here is the list of some of the books that I have read: Starting Strength, Heavy Duty, Strength Training Anatomy, Extreme Muscle Enhancement, Scrawny to Brawny, Maximum Strength, Body for Life, Built for Show, Gaining Mass, Encyclopedia of Modern Body Building, Knockout Fitness, LL Cool J's Platinum Workout, Bodybuilding: From Heavy Duty to SuperSlow, Burn the Fat Feed the Muscle, Body by Science, etc. I have also tried various programs, from infomercials (such as P90X) to programs that were prescribed specifically for me by a personal trainer. I am not a doctor or a personal trainer, but I do have my fair share of experience in the gym and knowledge about fitness. Now on to my review.First, the pros:1) The book has extremely valuable motivational and inspirational advice. Joe Manganiello has a very powerful writing style that can make any reader feel empowered. His insistence that one can overcome mental barriers by overcoming physical barriers is particularly insightful.2) The workouts in the books themselves are very effective and very intense. Joe advocates workouts in which two muscle groups are trained in alternate sets with no rest in between. This is a really powerful approach to getting in shape, since it combines weight lifting and cardio in a sense, and really dials up the intensity, something Joe really stresses the importance of. Which brings me to my next point...Cons:1) As previously mentioned, Joe argues that true muscular growth lies in intensity. This is a very good argument that I believe most fitness experts would agree with, but with the schedule advocated by Joe (training 6x per week, and up to 2x per day towards the end of the program), training with intensity is just not possible for the majority of people. First of all, training twice per day 6 times per week seriously taxes one's nervous system. However, a good amount of athletes might be used to this type of training and perhaps their NERVOUS SYSTEM can handle the high frequency/high volume. However, the split used in this book does not allow for adequate muscle recovery. Joe advocated a 3 day cycle repeated twice which would be Chest and Back day 1, legs and triceps day 2, and shoulders and biceps day 3, then repeat the 3 days and rest on Sunday. Because biceps are used during back day, shoulders are used during chest day, and triceps are used during chest and shoulder day, your triceps end up being worked out 6 times per week and shoulders and biceps are worked 4 times per week! Unless if one has an unbelievable recovery ability, there is no way that one can train out intensely and still be able to keep up with this schedule. To make matters even worse, after Day 3 (shoulders and biceps), most of the movements on Day 4 are close grip bench press and close grip chin-ups + close grip supinated row variations, which heavily recruit both biceps and shoulders. The result? One ends up training their sore muscles again, when they have not had sufficient time to recover. Although Joe does not say it, the workout split that is advocated in this book is very similar to one of the splits that Arnold Schwarzenegger used when training for Mr. Olympia. Arnold would do Chest and Back on day 1 (like Joe), Legs on day 2, and Shoulders, Biceps, and Triceps on day 3 (so Arnold left triceps for day 3 instead of day 2, unlike Joe), and would repeat the cycle again and take Sunday off. One must keep in mind that Arnold, with all the respect and credit that he deserves, was a professional bodybuilder on performance enhancing drugs when he was training on this schedule. Not only that, but it is rumored that he was constantly changing training partners because none of them could keep up with his schedule. That is to say, other professional bodybuilders on performance enhancing drugs could not train intensely and keep up with a schedule that is remarkably similar to the one advocated in this book. If this is not enough to make it clear that the regimen advocated in this book could easily lead one to over-train, take it from Ron Mathews, Joe's trainer who put together the exact program described in the book. When asked about the program in an interview for the New York Post, Mathews said: "I put him on a really crazy workout program. To have your body fat that low is almost impossible to maintain and isn't necessarily healthy." The author of the website goes on to say that "Mathews advises such a rigorous workout only for those seeking a specific goal, with at least three months of dedication to get there." (It should be noted that the program in the book is only a 6 week program, although presumably one could continue it for 3 months.)2) As mentioned in the previous reviews, the book lacks specific details which are integral to understanding the program. I will not repeat what others have said here, but the book seriously needs to have revisions made for both the exercise and nutritional aspects.3) Lastly, this is perhaps the most controversial "con" that I believe the book has that I am sure will be met with criticism by others. However, I will simply present my ideas here and readers can decide for themselves if they agree or not and make their own decision: Some of the exercises that are in this book could be potentially dangerous to individuals with certain body types. The barbell upright row, for example, has been looked down upon by most fitness experts due to the dangerous position that it places the shoulders in. As I have said before, I am not a doctor nor a personal trainer, but I have heard from both doctors and physical trainers that upright rows internally rotate the humerus to a dangerous degree and place a sheering amount of force on the shoulder girdle in its most vulnerable position. Also, Joe advocates going below parallel on bar dips in order for "the exercise to count." Whereas most people are aware of the fact that upright rows can be dangerous, not many people think the same of dips. Dips have been used for years in the gym, and some people have yielded great results in terms of tricep and chest development by implementing them into their program. I do not intend to start a controversy here about whether dips are safe for people with bad shoulders (or normal shoulders) or not, but I do recommend doing a bit of research before you try them (especially if you are going below parallel). As a general rule of thumb, if an exercise does not feel right, most likely it is not doing much good for your body. I would highly recommend reading about Eric Cressey's opinion about dips. Eric Cressey is a renowned personal trainer that works with a majority of professional athletes and weightlifters. He has some popular posts online, namely "Shoulder Savers" on T-Nation.com. Cressey has argued in past posts that dips internally rotate the shoulder beyond its normal range of motion and can lead to anterior shoulder instability. The take-home point is to listen to your own body when doing the exercises. In conclusion, this book is very good for its inspirational advice and the workouts themselves. However, its schedule leads to overtraining, it is not descriptive enough, and some of the exercises in the program could be dangerous to certain individuals. No modifications are offered for these exercises.

Fun read for motivation, but disappointing for actual implementation By Zach_Louis As a fitness enthusiast I was excited to read Joe's book to get the lowdown on the exact program he used to get his phenomenal results. And while he provides lots of great insight into his background and motivational tidbits, the details he provides of the program itself are lacking in some key areas, to the point that it makes the program incomplete and less than useful for actual implementation.First, the good. Joe does outline the set and rep schemes to be used for each exercise, and the rest periods, and the book provides excellent photos and descriptions of how each exercise is to be performed.Unfortunately, he leaves out a few important pieces of information. First, how much weight should be used in the various exercises and sets? The book only refers to using "light" or "moderate" weight. Obviously each person will differ, but a benchmark such as X% of a person's 1 rep maximum or a percentage of their body weight would suffice to know what would be appropriate. Unfortunately no such instruction is given, so there's really no way to know what the appropriate weights are that should be used for these exercises.Next, should any of the sets be done to failure? If so, which ones? Should there be any forced reps? Should the weight progressively increase from one workout to the next? Should the reps be done slower (longer time under tension=more difficult) or faster? All of these are important things to know.In addition, many of the exercises in the program require specific equipment that can only be found at a gym. So those of us who have workout rooms and equipment at home are left to wonder what to do in place of say a Pec Deck machine, or a Low Row machine. It would have been great if alternative or substitute exercise options were provided for the exercises that require specific machines. Finally, while Joe gives a great overview of the do's and don'ts of diet and nutrition, and some sample meals, again the specifics are lacking. Should we be aiming to eat at a caloric surplus, maintenance, or deficit? Is the goal to first bulk then cut, or do a body recomp? The portions a person eats will totally change depending on these factors, but there is no explanation of this in the book. Even if a person ate the sample meals Joe includes, if they're eating portions that result in a deficit, there will be no muscle growth. Or if they're eating portions that result in too large a surplus, there will be excess fat gain. To not provide more guidance or formula to aim for for each person's particular caloric needs leaves the diet section incomplete.Ultimately, these things could all be fixed with a subsequent book revision, which I hope Joe considers doing. There is a lot of potential here, and it was at least interesting to get a glimpse of the type of workouts he does. But as a real world nuts and bolts manual, it is too incomplete to execute properly.

Manganiello is a fine specimen of the human male by any account By Juliette Bravo I've had Joe Manganiello's Evolution sitting on a shelf since Christmas, and hadn't gotten around to reading it yet. It's a quick read, really. It took less than a day because only about half of the book is text. The rest consists of photos of Joe in workout action and explanations of certain movements. The book seems to have been quite successful. I saw him in an interview not too long ago saying the publishing company wanted more of the same kind of thing, and whoever manages his social media accounts (I doubt it's the man himself) continually re-tweets photos of people claiming the book has really changed their lives.Let me first be clear on what this book is, and what it is not. Despite the fact that Mr. Manganiello is a fine specimen of the human male by any account, he has no formal training in fitness, nutrition, or physiology, nor does he claim to be an expert in any of these fields. The book is not co-written by anyone with formal fitness credentials. What we then have is simple anecdotal examples of what works for him. There is nothing wrong with that. Sharing life lessons is part of the human experience and we can certainly learn from the example of others, but we also need to be aware of what exactly it is that we're entering into.Manganiello's Evolution serves primarily as a motivational and inspirational tome. He shares his story of being the weakest kid on his high school sport teams and how he managed to find the best trainers and learn all that he could about changing his body into the form he was looking to inhabit. There are a lot of self-help and mindset comments, like "Don't accept yourself as a finished product. Ever." "Weaknesses don't mean that you're weak. It means you have so much more you can accomplish."There is a major focus on mindset, and Manganiello relates the story of Roger Bannister, the first man to ever break the four minute mile. He did so by challenging the conventional wisdom and believing it could be done, and also trained in such a way to focus on the goal. It's definitely a relevant and inspirational story. The Evolution workouts are HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training), much like CrossFit, but without (thankfully) promoting the brand. Manganiello also goes way beyond CrossFit in adding cable machines, leg pres and curls and other things one need standard gym equipment to perform. There are a few places where this book falls apart for me. Manganiello refers a few times to a former girlfriend (or perhaps two of them -it was hard to tell) who he felt held him back from reaching his true potential. One instance was that she didn't want him skydiving and the other was that the girlfriend wasn't happy living across the street from a gym. He seems to ignore what might be the real reasons behind these objections and focus on how it affected him. The skydiving story is framed within a conversation with one of his coworkers who needed multiple surgeries after a skydiving accident. The accident was so bad that the guy lost part of his foot and shattered his leg in seventy two places. Manganiello's takeaway from the conversations about this man's injuries was- find a new girlfriend who won't worry about you maiming or killing yourself. The issue with living across the street from the gym was not really elaborated. Who knew why the girl didn't like the place? I'm not sure why either anecdote was included, or why the editor felt they were relevant and left them there. They had nothing to do with anything and just felt like sour grapes and a way to vent some left over anger about old relationships. For a guy who wrote a book about focusing on being productive in life, this was certainly unnecessary and snarky.Evolution is geared toward men. The verbiage used indicates that Manganiello is talking specifically to men here. He uses the term, "most guys" quite often throughout the book. I get that, I guess. Much of this is him sharing his own stories and experience of a journey from a skinny kid to a the image he presents today. It does seem like a missed opportunity, though. Manganiello has made his name based on his looks, and a major piece of that is his appeal to women. He, his editor, publisher, etc. had to know that a large portion of books sales would be to women, and that men are not the only half of the population interested in exercise or looking for inspiration to make life changes. The pages and pages of photos are certainly proof that the publisher was looking to sell this book across gender lines, yet, like in most of the fitness industry, the words are chosen in an effort to sell men one thing and women something else. The other day I wrote about wanting to throw a weight at the (male) instructor in my spin class after he made a comment about the hand weights being light, so the ladies didn't have to "worry about bulking up." There are a whole lot of us delicate females who completely understand that heavy weights are the way to go. While we may not want to look like Joe, that doesn't mean that the same lessons about how to make the journey don't apply to the XX chromosome set.Motivational? Yes, if you're looking for someone to tell you you can do it.Helpful? Perhaps. The photos and examples of form for various movements were wise to include.Fluffy? Hell, yes. There's a chapter dedicated to how Joe gets ready for shirtless photo and film shoots. Sigh. On one hand it's all about how he's not different than anyone else, then he's talking about how he pumps up for the camera. The bottom line is it's a celebrity workout book, not a fitness guide or text. Take it for what it's worth, absorb the motivational efforts of the author, and enjoy the photos. That's what I did!
