9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Forbidden Tomb By Amazon Customer I like Kuzneski's "Payne and Jones" series of books, but I don't love "The Hunters". I read the first book and thought it was OK; not great but I thought there was enough there that could be developed. Based upon this, the second book, I guess I was wrong. Characters remained underdeveloped. An interesting plot was sacrificed for needless violence and painfully detailed descriptions of weapons and explosives. I will say that the action was quick, but overall, it seemed less like a book and more like a hastily put-together treatment for a shallow action film.

Starts good, downhill from there By Daryl Kunzmann While the plot was moderately predicable, the one aspect that degraded the tale was the sporadic immaturity of the main characters. These are professionals? More like teenagers trying to be grown up. As this was sporadic, it's more like an editing fail.

And just like book 1, you can tell there will be another one to come. At the very end you get a hint as to where the story line is going, just like the first book gave a hint. Setting you up for the next book in the series.the only time I give a hint to what the plot is actually about is when I think it is terrible, and I have only done that in one book review. I am looking forward to the next book. Glad I actually caught this series in book 1.And no, you do not have to start at book 1. But that is where all the characters are introduced. Now they are all developing in their own way, and they are all becoming closer in the adventures they share.

Is it a book on nature, a book on ecology, a book on human nature, a prescient description of the struggle between modern civilization and the land that nurtured it, a critique of mankind, a string of quotable gems, an account of a mind, or, like Star Wars, a way of slipping a deep and human spirituality into someone else's mind without their recognizing it? It depends on who is doing the reading and when. Read it for any of these purposes, and it will not disappoint. If you've never read it, read it. If you read it for class years ago and hated it, read it again. This may be the most subtle, multi-layered and carefully worked piece of literature you'll ever find. By keeping the down-to-earth tone (no doubt in reaction to the high-flying prose of his friend, R.W. Emerson) Thoreau pulls a Columbo, and fools us into thinking he's writing simply about observing nature, living in a cabin, or sounding a pond. Somehow by the end of Walden, however, you may find it is your self he has sounded. People have accused Thoreau of despising mankind, but read deeper and you will discover he loved people well enough to chide us, show us our faults (admitting he's as bad as the worst of us), and give to all of us this wonderful gift, a book you could base your life on. There is more day to dawn, he reminds us at the end: the sun is but a morning star.

The negative reviews here are frighteningly revealing By Kerry Walters As a professor of philosophy, I at one time regularly took classes of first year college students to Concord for a week-long intensive seminar on Emerson and Thoreau. I eventually abandoned the seminar, because I discovered that each class was progressively more hostile to what these two wonderful persons stood for. The ..... reviews written by young people of this edition of _Walden_ are, then, disconcertingly familiar to me. I obviously disagree with their evaluations of the book and of Thoreau's character. But what's interesting is why they have such a negative reaction to a book written, as Thoreau says, for young people who haven't yet been corrupted by society. What is it about the culture in which we live that encourages such hostility to his eloquent plea for simplicity? It's too facile to suggest that the backlash is motivated only by resentful pique at what's seen as Thoreau's condemnation of contemporary lifestyles, although I suspect this is part of the explanation. I'd be interested in reading the thoughts here of other readers who are likewise puzzled and disturbed by "Generation Y's" negative response to Thoreau.

I picked it up for the first time in thirty years only to realize that Throreau's philosophy had long ago permeated my being. I remember being blown away by my first reading more than half a century ago, but with each immersion new depths are achieved.Thoreau sought both authenticity and simplicity in his life. He never abandoned Concord and the real world but merely sought refuge at Walden to plumb the depths of his being. Serious introspection and brilliant writing show each of us the the way to our own core. Can we stand the examination? That is for each of us to determine.The Transcendentalists may never have been able to define their philosphy, but what remains of it more than a century after the movement's passing can be summed up in Thoreau's always upbeat outlook of "...if one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet success unexpected in common hours."One cannot read Walden without gaining confidence in one's ability to change direction in life and optimism about the future. We do not have to live lives of conformity and quiet desparation. "In the long run men hit only what they aim at. Therefore, though they should fail immediately, they had better aim at something high."There has never been a book that better expresses American optimism, and there is no reason for us to lose confidence now. Simplify and be as close to authentic as you can be and all will turn out well. Oh, and while you're at it question authority.If there could be a six star book, this would be my candidate.

So Real, Like Being There By Emily Ruddell The descriptions of Vietnam, the jungle, the sniper mentality, and the necessary teamwork to survive was so real. It was like being there. My skin crawled with bugs, my nose was offended by the stench, my eyes strained to see in the dark, my ears were listening for a sound of movement. The author's knowledge of his subject matter is obvious, and his skill with words inspiring. He paints a vivid tale.

By Eric Zillmer In my view, this is the best of the series, with this one going into more character background, of Stalker particularly. Still the same excellent in-the-mission details of what our subjects are facing and dealing with, expressed in the author's expertly crafted way, taking the reader there to feel the heat, humidity and tension of the place. I think I even suffered a few bug bites along the way! Thoroughly enjoyable, even though the subject is not at all one of any pleasures to be found. Congratulations to Mr. Burgess on such a work of the finest kind.

By jammom I had already read the first 2 books when this was released & was so into the series that I just had to find out the backstory.It's not necessary to read,but more insight into how things got started.Great prequel that keeps you wanting more.

By Kindle Customer I have just finished reading all four books in this series, counting the prequel, and I was quite blown away!I don't want to do any spoilers, so I won't go into detail about the story, but I will say that it was very well-written and extremely gripping.An amazing experience I heartily recommend to all.

By Nancy Glynn So, this kind of reminded a little of American Psycho, in Christian's character, the good-looking psycho type. And I loved American Psycho! I am interested in learning more about Christian's dark world and the terror in Meredith's now with what happened with her son (every parent's nightmare). This was a short read and read it in a couple of hours. I liked the present tense first person writing of the story. I would recommend this to any thriller-loving reader!

About the Author Robert Merle was born in French Algeria, before moving to mainland France in 1918. A lifelong anglophile, Merle was a professor of English Literature at various universities, translating works including Jonathan Swift's Gullivers Travels into French. After the outbreak of war in 1939 he served as an interpreter with the British Expeditionary Force, and was captured by the German army at Dunkirk, the experience of which served as the basis for his post-war debut Weekend at Zuydcoote. Initially French publishers were wary of this book, put off by its foul language and sexual content, but at the urging of authors including Jean-Paul Sartre and Raymond Queneau it was snapped up by Gaston Gallimard and went on to win the Prix Goncourt. His much-loved Fortunes of France series was published over four decades, from 1977 to 2003, the final volume appearing just a year before his death of a heart attack in 2004.

Great discovery: a lusty, historically accurate series of historical fiction By Antonio I didn't know this extensive series (Fortunes de France) about the life of a doctor and spy in late Valois and early Bourbon France and his son, but I decided to read it because of great reviews in the British press. It was compared to Maurice Druons extraordinary six volume series "The Accursed Kings", about the end of the Capetian dinasty and the beginning of the Hundred Years War, which I loved. This volume deals with the birth and early years of Pierre de Siorac, the protagonist. The Brethren of the title are Jean de Siorac, Pierre's father, and Jean de Sauveterre, two Huguenot soldiers who become bosom friends and decide to treat each other as brothers. The book narrates the ascent of The Brethren, as they buy land and become part of the aristocracy of the Périgord region in France. Against a background of wars with the English and the Spaniards, of civil and sectarian conflicts, of plague and famine, Merle tells a wonderful story of a tightly knit household (besides The Brethren and the children of de Siorac by multiple women it includes various household servants and retainers) enduring prospering. By the end Pierre leaves the family castle to study medicine in Montpellier, accompanied by his half-brother and a servant who is also a close friend. He has loved his father and honored his mother (this dual duty generates much conflict), has known love, sex and loss and is impelled forward by the irresistible high spirits of youth and health. I am looking forward to the next book in the series, En nos vertes années (I don't know the English title). Is it as good as Druon? It's different, not as tightly plotted, more diffuse, but nonetheless great reading.

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Good strong historical fiction By J. Hamby Good strong historical fiction. Merle brings a new perspective to a almost over drawn period. Swords and sacraments seem the new niche in historical action fiction. However most that touch on medieval France do so using the English view in any conflicts (in English). Now with the reprinted translation of Druon and its George R R. Martin tie, we get a different take. And Merle is a worthy addition to this narrow (so far) shelf of focus.Merle is solid more than brilliant. He sets up a potentially nice series with this opener that does settle a bit into the flaws first books in series can often show. There is a bit of a build up that can slow things down a little. But it still works quite well.Merle has a bit of a simplistic style that works well and his historical detail is nicely balanced. Rich and yet not pedantic or feels too much of info dropping. There is also something almost fun about the characterization; colorful but engaging. Just enough nuance to counter the bolder than life aspects. Making for a gripping read.
