Dubliners (Xist Classics), by James Joyce

From Publishers Weekly Starred Review. Frank and Malachy McCourt and 13 Irish actors bring Joyce's short stories to life in this well-produced audiobook. None of the readers employ a thick accent in the narrative portions, but for dialogue they let their imitative talents shine and their Irish lilts bloom. Brendan Coyle and Charles Keating, reading "A Little Cloud" and "Grace" respectively, give such wonderful expression to the idiosyncrasies of every individual voice that the listener is never confused even when numerous men are talking. Joyce wrote only sparingly in actual dialect, but most of the readers interpret his intentions freely and successfully. Fionnula Flanagan is perfect reading "A Mother," her voice shifting easily between prim and proper tones and fiery indignation punctuated with little sighs. It helps that Joyce's writing is so masterful that when Flanagan and the two other actresses read the three stories that revolve around women, their words sound utterly natural. Not all the performances are on the same level—Stephen Rea's cold, somber voice is apt for the meditative beginning and ending sections of the collection's most famous story, "The Dead," but too flat for the central description of a lively party. This audiobook creates the atmosphere of a fireside storytelling session that will hold any listener in rapt attention. (May) Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. From Library Journal Joyce's classic has been recorded before, of course, but in this new version, each of the 15 stories will be read by a different person, including writers Frank McCourt, Malachy McCourt, and Patrick McCabe, and actors Ciaran Hinds and Colm Meaney. This Joyce guy might amount to something By Michael Battaglia I wish I could stand up here and make some pretentious claim that this is the "greatest short story collection of all time!" or something along those lines but I generally don't read short stories or short story collections. But I like James Joyce and so figured what the heck, I made it through Ulysses, this should be a cakewalk. So I read it and if you were wowed by Ulysses then this should reconfirm Joyce's genius for you and that he could do other writing besides that wacky postmodern stuff (before there really was a postmodern). If you're not a Joyce fan most of these (other than a notable handful) probably won't convert you. In essence these are Joyce's portraits of the people of Dublin and the city itself, most of these stories are character sketches, mostly following a few people around as they go about their lives. They were written over a period of time so the quality does vary a bit, the first few stories I don't find anything special but by the time you get to around "Two Gallants" the quality takes a sharp spike upward and stays there right until the end. The prose is fairly easy to follow, the worst part is deciphering all the Irish names and slang that are used liberally for obvious reasons . . . if anything it showed me how two cultures who technically speak the language can sound so different. The stories run the gamut of the "slice of life" genre, if such a thing exists, showing people from all walks of life and all classes of society, showing them as realistically as Joyce could, all their fears and foibles, warts and all. At his best he makes you live the lives of the characters and immerses you deeply into the city of Dublin, probably more than any group of short stories has ever brought a city to life. If you're still not convinced, then take this advice, buy the book for the sake of only one story, the last story in the collection, "The Dead" . . . simply put it is one of the best pieces of short fiction I have ever read. It starts off mundanely enough at a party but by the time the characters leave the party and go back to their hotel the writing becomes something almost otherworldly and Joyce starts writing some of the most evocative prose ever put on paper. If the last few pages don't send chills down your spine, then you must be dead. That's the only explanation. After that gem, everything else is just icing on the cake. Simply put, everyone should read "The Dead" and if you're the type of person whose fancy shall be struck by the rest of the stories here, so much the better.

Martin Having grown up in a small town much like Joyce's Dublin, this book has a special significance for me. I've seen so many people from my town graduating from high school without really understanding that there is an entire world outside the place they grew up and lacking the ambition to go explore it. I fear many of them will spend their lives "getting by" in a job they hate, raising children who will inevitably do the same thing. Joyce's "Dubliners" depicts this cycle with as much complexity and compassion as any author I've read.In an age where the most publicized fiction tends to be simple-minded and genre-bound, it's refreshing to come across a writer with Joyce's complexity. "Dubliners" is so rich in its intellectual and symbolic atmosphere that many readers may be put off by the overall weight of the prose. The writing is so thick with metaphorical contexts that the literal content of the story occasionally becomes obscured, which can be frustrating for those not used to reading Joyce. Yet, while difficult, "Dubliners" is far from impossible to decipher, and although these stories function well as a whole, they are also more or less self-contained, which makes "Dubliners" easier to get through than Joyce's other works(it's a lot easier to take on a ten page short story than a 600+ page novel like "Ulysses" or "Finnegan's Wake"). For readers who are new to Joyce, this would be a good place to start.A final note: since this book is old enough to be considered a "classic," there are a plethora of editions available from various publishers. I own the Vintage edition (ISBN: 0679739904). Not only is it a quality printing (not that cheap newspaper ink that rubs off on your fingers), it also contains about a hundred pages of criticism at the end that help shed light on Joyce's often illusive themes. Normally I shun forewards and afterwards (I like to think I've read enough to discover a story's theme on my own), but in the case of Joyce I found that a push in right direction can mean the difference between enjoyment and frustration.

He had also rejected Catholicism, and yet all his characters are dominated by it. DUBLINERS, Joyce's collection of short stories which set the standard for the genre, is filled with characters who come to terrible revelations (which he called "epiphanies") about how their lives had been scarred by the provincialism of Dublin, the divisiveness of its politics, and the oppression of religion. By extension, this is how Joyce percieved humanity at the dawn of modernism. The stories range from the psychologially simple ("Counterparts" and "A Little Cloud") to the extraordinarily complex ("A Painful Case" and "The Dead"). But what is common throughout is the feel for Dublin just after the turn of the last century. The readers see the cobblestones, the chimneys, the trams and carts, the churches, and the street lamps. More importantly, the readers feel the tensions underlying the public smiles and infrequent bursts of confidence that the characters exhibit. The pinnacle of this collection is "The Dead". A novella, actually, "The Dead" encompasses everything: politics, religion, art, journalism, history, love, and the inevitability of death rendering all worldly things meaningless. This doesn't mean the story is a downer: this death is necessary to making a fresh start. The ending of "The Dead" has been interpreted in hundreds of ways. However, there is no denying that as Joyce "pulls back the camera" from the Conroy's hotel room to the universe above, the writing swells to its most beautiful. To me, this is a movement toward the future, toward change, leaving the living dead behind to a more spiritual life on Earth.Rocco Dormarunno, author of The Five Points.

Smitten in a Small Town blurb The first book in each of MJ Fredrick’s three small town series—travel from the Texas coast to a Minnesota lake town in this boxed set! Bluestone Homecoming (Welcome to Bluestone Book 1) War correspondent Leo Ericson returns to his hometown of Bluestone Lake, Minnesota, when his parents notify him his young son is having trouble fitting in at school. Leo doesn’t know how to be a single parent since the death of his wife, and he certainly has no desire to return to Bluestone. But he needs a place for his son, a place where he’ll be with family, while Leo does his job. He’ll stay long enough to get Max settled, then go back to work. School counselor Trinity Madison watches Leo struggle with his son, trying to overcome the mental barricade she’s erected against the man who sent his son away when he’s perfectly capable of caring for the child. The situation brings about her own unsettled feelings about giving her child up for adoption when she was young. But as she observes Leo’s difficulties, his sacrifices, she softens toward the man. While he’s in town, he ends up working with some old friends and Trinity on a committee to revitalize Bluestone. The former resort town is struggling and looking for ways to bring tourists back. Leo finds himself charmed, then smitten with the feisty counselor, but will he still love her when he learns her secret? Waltz Back to Texas (Lost in a Boom Town Book 1) After growing up in a dying town, with only two restaurants, no movie theater, and no future, waitress Cassidy Simon wants out. For once, luck is on her side when the oil boom comes to South Texas. She’s determined to use it for her advantage, starting up an RV park for the oilfield workers to add to her escape fund. She’s never been out of Texas, and she’s itching for adventure. Grady McKenna couldn’t get away from his family’s ranch fast enough when he was a teenager, but a tour in the Air Force in the Middle East is enough to convince him there’s no place like home. He’s seen the world, had his adventure. Now he’s ready to contribute to his family’s legacy in Evansville. Naturally, the woman who draws his attention is the one intent on slipping through his fingers. How can he convince her life with him will be all the adventure she needs? The Love I Want to Be In (The Off-Season Book 1) Single mother Brioney Mayburn has learned about responsibility the hard way, working as a maid in the motel in the small beach town of Avalon Island, Texas and looking after her younger brother. Local jack-of-all-trades Blue Maddox was her sister's high school boyfriend, but stayed behind when she went off to college. He's now drawn to Brioney, admiring her drive, her determination to give her daughter the best life she can. But will Brioney look past his beach-bum facade to see who he really is?

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Interesting Storyline -98% Clean/ 3 Stories! By Caroljane Max, a 9-year-old boy and his father, Leo, had their lives shattered two years ago when Leo's wife was killed in a car accident. Max was moved to his grandparent's house. Leo, an award winning journalist, is embedded with troops in Afghanistan when he receives notice from his parents that he must come home for Max's sake. Small town community, great characters and romance. Issues affecting a small town are discussed, as well as concerts and starting a little league team. The personal growth of all well-written characters is interesting and realistic. A cozy, easy read. Very enjoyable. I liked it and hope you will, too. P.S. There are 2 more cozy reads! Enjoy. :)

Would have liked it much better except for the sexual scenes which never add all that much to any story, in my view. Had these been only suggested, could have given it 5 stars. I found this to be true of all three stories. Wish I had seen that on the reviews and would have passed it by.

Shadow Alpha is the third, and full-length novel, in USA Today Bestselling author Carole Mortimer’s HOT new ALPHA series. Sizzling contemporary romance with an added dash of danger. Stories of dark and compelling ALPHA men, who are used to taking what they want when they want it, and the strong and determined women who have no intention of being taken. Unless it’s on their own terms... Dair Grayson runs a worldwide security company, and with his military background he’s the perfect choice when Gregori Markovic, a boss of London’s criminal underworld, needs someone to go and find, and if necessary rescue his sister. Straightforward enough, it’s what Dair does, after all. Only trouble is, Dair hasn’t seen Kat for 15 years, and his affectionate memories of her as a coltish fifteen-year-old in no way prepare him for the beautiful woman Kat has become. Kat has given up hope of being rescued from the hell in which she’s been incarcerated for weeks. The arrival of Dair Grayson changes all that. But Dair is no longer that devil-may-care teenager she remembers from so long ago, but has become a hardened and scarred warrior. A warrior who is determined to rescue her, from herself, if necessary. On the run from Kat’s ex-husband, the two of them are thrown together constantly, and Dair finds it harder and harder to resist this hot and sexy grown-up Kat. Except he doesn’t do forever, and he learned his lesson long ago when it came to dark-eyed beauties like Katya Markovic, and has the scars to prove it. Kat doesn’t want forever either, she’s only interested in the here and now. And what she wants now is Dair, and for the two of them to satisfy the hot and explosive sexual tension between them until it’s time for her to start running again. The only problem is, Kat’s ex-husband is now looking for both of them... 5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Reviewed by Desere Steenberg , South Africa By Desere Steenberg Dair Grayston runs a worldwide security company ( btw I love this man ) , with his military background he's the perfect choice when Gregori Markovic ( can you just imagine such a hot name but such a bastard of a character anyway's back to the story shall we) , Gregori is boss of a London criminal underworld and needs someone to find his sister, possibly even rescue her from certain death.Of course this is a straight forward mission for such a bad ass military trained security expert such as Dair and he's all game, except for one little problem, his target is Kat, the once 15 year old beauty who had captured his attention and mesmerized his soul. Kat is now of course all grown up and her beauty not only manages to knock Dair's socks off but shows him a whole new side of the young girl he once knew.Kat knows she needs rescuing but she's not so sure she needs to be rescued by the hardened and scarred warrior Dair has become, but of course Dair is determined and there is no changing his mind. Whilst running from Kat's ex-husband Dair and Kat find it incredibly hard to resist each other and the more shots fly the more sparks build. The only downfall of the entire hot hero rescues damsel in distress heroine , guns blazing, bombs popping all over the place , fall in love with each other scenario, neither Dair or Kat does forever so this is going nowhere fast, well except straight into the bedroom where the flames of sexual tension goes up in smoke. But will they make it out alive and will Kat's ex hunt them down and watch them go up in flames of a whole other kind? This book was HOT! From the seriously oh my gosh want hero ( yes I am addicted to hot military men) to the awesome kick ass heroine, it's not every day I find a heroine that hit's the perfect " I would love to be as bad-ass as this chick" notes like Kat did.The action level in this read was absolutely off the charts brilliant, on the edge of my seat does not really describe any of the angst I was feeling during this read.It was more like I needed to get up and shoot something or hit someone, the action was seriously intense. I only know of two other authors who are able to bring that level of action, suspense and kick-ass wonder to romantic suspense reads, so Carole Mortimer you have officially taken a spot on my MUST READ ROMANTIC SUSPENSE AUTHOR'S list, and for those who know me well enough will know that a spot on that particular list of mine is not easily achieved.I should be telling you a whole lot more about this book , but my darling reader friends if I do just that I will completely ruin a book that is a must read, so all I will say is " Go get this book, trust me this is a keeper!"5/5 star review"He 's come to rescue her easy as one, two, bang! But will she be able to pull his shadow from the darkness and save his soul ?"** Reviewers note : If sex hotter than hell is not your thing or language of the explicit kind , this will not be the book for you.** Copy provided in exchange for a honest review

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Enjoyable Sexy Quick Read By Sheila M "Dair could only hope, for everyone's sake, that no harm had come to this man's sister. Sweet little Katya."THE STORY: Dair Grayson is connected to one of the underworld families in London. He has spent over a decade trying to build a life away from that life. When he is asked by the head of the Markovic underworld family to help find out what is going on with Katya Markovic Orlov who married into another underworld family as part of an arranged marriage orchestrated by their father. Dair remembers a sweet innocent Katya from when she was fifteen and he was eighteen. Those memories of that sweet girl get him to agree to find out what is happening. When Dair discovers Katya he finds out that her husband has had her placed at a private clinic where she is essentially a prisoner. When he rescues her, the two take off on a world adventure hiding from the forces of her husband's family.OPINION: I liked much about this book. The relationship between Kat and Dair is hot and spicy. Kat is no shrinking violet despite her history. She is strong and I loved how she and Dair fight and argue and how that quickly turns into sexual heat. Dair is heroic and yet has a dark past. I liked that they have a great connection and I really did believe that they had chemistry between them. This is a shorter book and thus does not have the great development in story and characters that a longer novel would. That being said, I did enjoy these characters and will continue reading the series.WORTH MENTIONING: My biggest complaint about this book is that for a woman who was terrorized by her husband and lost a child only two months ago, she quickly turned to a new relationship with Dair. Perhaps too quickly for me.FINAL DECISION: I enjoyed this book as a quick uncomplicated read. Will it be one I want to read again and again? No. But I enjoyed it while I was reading the story.CONNECTED BOOKS: SHADOW ALPHA is the third book in the ALPHA series. There is not necessary to have read any of the prior books in the series. Although characters from Book 2, DARK ALPHA, are mentioned briefly, they make no appearance.STAR RATING: I give this book 4 stars.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Another fabulous story by Carole Mortimer By Jerry McLeer Congratulations on your 200th book. Dair Grayson is out to find Katya the sister of Gregori Markovic the organized crime boss we met in Book 2 Dark Alpha. Dair and Katya have a history. Dair goes to find her and it leads to many adventures. I felt many emotions with these characters. You will enjoy the ride. Can't wait for Book 4.

I'm very excited to read The Perfume Garden which is being released in the US on kindle next month. This definitely piqued my interest even more. I also read the first chapter of it which was at the end of the short story. It will be a dual time period novel, which I enjoy. This prequel gave us more insight into the mom, Liberty, and the father, John. The daughter and grandma are featured more in the main novel. I think you would only want to read this if you have read or are planning to read The Perfume Garden.

In Volume 4, wedding plans take over HearthLand, and it seems almost everyone is getting into the spirit of things--to the delight of some and disapproval of others. But just as everything seems right with the world, everything goes wrong. Ramiro and Susannah talk to Kirk and things get dicey. Fireworks explode in several directions, and leave everyone wondering what sparks were ignited by them! When a life change tears at the fabric of a family, another change comes to HearthLand. Ralph has an idea to solve Annie's problems, but she isn't convinced. The residents "mother" Ralph a bit as he endures forced "recuperation" again and instead, drive him crazy. Add to that a new investor who makes Ralph uncomfortable along with bad news from Keith, and life at HearthLand just got a whole, new level of interesting. Ralph is concerned that Annie's getting too close to someone he doesn't trust. Though Annie and Ralph enjoy a peaceful day together, but with the return of their newest investor, things heat up. Ralph struggles with the result of some of his choices and Annie's life seems in danger once more. As if all wasn't enough, a TV crew arrives and after a damaging feature on the Paisley Duncan show, it seems as if their attempt at an idyllic life is over.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. I love Ralph and Annie so much! By Mommynificent I am loving these HearthLand books, and they are getting better and better! I continue to love that Chautona isn't afraid to explore the harder sides of community life as well as the really attractive parts! I started reading this series after reading a Forgotten Truth and being completely lost because it was so tied up in this story. This book is where they start to really overlap so it was nice to finally get some of those holes filled in. I actually liked this side of the story much more than A Forgotten Truth, probably because I love Ralph and Annie so much! This series continues to grow and delight. Can't wait for more!

Senator Cale Caldwell and his wife maintained a far-reaching and powerful grip on Capitol Hill society—but not powerful enough to save him from foul play. Despite his eminence and influence, the Senator’s life is cut short in brutal fashion at a glamorous reception held in his honor, just two short years after tragedy struck the Caldwell family in the form of the unsolved murder of his niece. When attorney Lydia James suggests a connection between the two deaths, she’s shut down, and fast. But who stands to benefit from the Caldwell’s tragedies, and James’ silence? The Senator’s political rivals? The media? The Caldwells’ closest allies? Working with a dizzying number of suspects and possible motives, James embarks on a hunt for the Caldwell killer amidst a web of Washington intrigue and political maneuvering that’s sure to leave no stone unturned—or life unthreatened. Murder on Capitol Hill is the second book in the popular Capital Crimes mystery series, preceded by Murder in the White House. The enduring Capital Crimes series, published between 1980 and 2011, contains twenty-five titles, all set in and around Washington, D.C. As the daughter of President Harry S. Truman, Margaret Truman is uniquely positioned to bring this fascinating city to life.

About the Author

Margaret Truman, the only child of President Harry Truman (33rd President of the United States), was born in Independence, Missouri and spent her early years between Missouri and Washington, DC, where her father was a senator. Upon the death of Franklin Roosevelt, Truman assumed the presidency and the young Margaret moved to the White House. From there it was on to George Washington University and a Bachelors of Arts degree in History. After college, she pursued her interest and talent in singing and from the late 1940s into the early 1950s she performed around the world, as well as on radio and television shows. Her singing career received mixed reviews, but nonetheless was followed closely by the media in her day. Truman remained in the public eye when she went on to become one of the first women to be part of the then fledgling morning news and entertainment shows, paired with Mike Wallace on NBC’s show Monitor in 1955. She began her writing career in 1956 with her first book, Souvenir, Margaret Truman's Own Story. The autobiography was followed by several works of nonfiction including books about her father, her mother, Bess Truman, and several books focusing on the history of the White House and its previous inhabitants, including former pets of White House families. In 1980, with the release of Murder in the White House, Truman began her foray into the world of fiction, which would continue for the rest of her life. Her Capital Crimes series remains popular with a whole new generation of readers who are intrigued by behind-the-scenes pictures of the political process. A prolific writer in both the fiction and nonfiction genres, Truman has written a total of thirty-five books and is today a truly popular American writer. Margaret Truman died in 2008 at the age of 83.

Murder on Capitol Hill (Capital Crimes Book 2), by Margaret Truman

Review “BRIGHT, WITTY, [AND] FULL OF WASHINGTON INSIDER INSIGHT.”–Houston Chronicle“SHE’S UP TO THE MINUTE. AND SHE’S GOOD.”–Associated Press

From the Inside Flap Between them, Senator Cale Caldwell and his blue-blooded wife controlled as much power on Capitol Hill as the law would allow. Sadly, it wasn?t sufficient to protect him from a killer, even surrounded by his friends at a champagne reception in his honor. The senator?s murder wasn?t the family?s first brush with violence. Only two years ago, a niece had been murdered, her killer never found. But when attorney Lydia James, counsel to a senate committee investigating the tragedy, suggests there might be a connection between the two deaths, she?s voted down fast. Yet strange rumors persist. The senator?s death could benefit many people, among them a bitter political adversary, an ambitious talk show host, and a master of spin who makes even murder lookgood. . . .

About the Author Margaret Truman has won faithful readers with her works of biography and fiction, particularly her ongoing series of Capital Crimes mysteries. Her novels let us into the corridors of power and privilege, poverty and pageantry in the nation’s capital. She lives in Manhattan.

Margaret Truman -- The best of celebrity mysteries By Tony Adams None of Margaret Truman's mysteries rise to the level of the greatest mystery writers, but they are clearly the best of the celebrity mysteries and show a real understanding of Washington and politics.

13 of 16 people found the following review helpful. Predictable By Richard R The second in Margaret Truman's "Murder in Washington" series is better than the first. In "Murder on Capitol Hill" Truman has a surer grasp of character and plot than in "Murder in the White House", but her research is still done from memory and the story is predictable. Senator Cale Caldwell is murdered at a party, leaving readers a finite number of suspects as heroine lawyer Lydia James leads the investigation. Truman gives us an interesting and well-drawn array of suspects, but most readers will have worked out the plot halfway through. As in "White House", Truman relies heavily on her Washington memories rather than researching new ones. So instead of interesting and detailed insights into the Senate's back rooms, we get a lot of chats in restaurants and bars. Despite its title, there is very little description of Capitol Hill. Readers interested in juicy insider insights will be disappointed. With a few pen strokes, the book could be set in any city. A quick read, not bad, but lots of room for improvement.

Fantastic and fast page turning novel By Charlie F This is the second of 24 Capitol Crimes novels that Margaret Truman wrote, and the fourth one that I read. I have recently completed acuqiring the entire collection and look forward to reading them all. This book keeps the reader in suspense and makes them want to keep reading, and turning the pages until the very suspenseful ending to find out who killed the victim.
