Since the early twentieth century, scientific materialism has so undermined our belief in the human capacity for transcendence that many people find it difficult to believe in God and the human soul. The materialist perspective has not only cast its spell on the natural sciences, psychology, philosophy, and literature, it has also enthralled popular culture, which offers very little to encourage the "soul's upward yearning".

There are many signs of the widespread loss of confidence in our ability to soar upward, and these have been noted by thinkers as diverse as Carl Jung (psychiatrist), Mircea Eliade (historian of religion), Gabriel Marcel (philosopher), and authors C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien. Their observations were validated by a 2004 study published in the American Journal of Psychiatry that linked the absence of religion with a marked increase in suicide, meaninglessness, substance abuse, separation from family members, and other psychological problems.

Thus, the loss of transcendence is negatively affecting an entire society. It is stealing from countless individuals their sense of happiness, dignity, ideals, virtues, and destiny.Ironically, the evidence for transcendence is greater today than in any other period in history. The problem is, this evidence has not been compiled and made widely available—a challenge Father Spitzer aspires to meet with this book.

Father Spitzer's work provides a bright light in the midst of the darkness by presenting traditional and contemporary evidence for God and a transphysical soul from several major sources. It shows that we are transcendent beings with souls capable of surviving bodily death; that we are self-reflective beings aware of and able to strive toward perfect truth, love, goodness, and beauty; that we have the dignity of being created in the very image of God. If we underestimate these truths, we undervalue one another, underlive our lives, and underachieve our destiny.

The Soul's Upward Yearning: Clues to Our Transcendent Nature from Experience and Reason (Happiness, Suffering, and Transcendence-Book 2), by Fr. Robert J. Spitzer

Review "Father Spitzer displays a broad range of arguments in favor of the reality and the compelling importance of the transcendent dimension of our existence on the basis of religious literature, our interior awareness of transcendent reality, the cosmic struggle between good and evil, metaphysics, our natural desire to experience perfect goodness, love and beauty, the evidence of near-death experiences, and contemporary science, especially astrophysics." --Timothy Cardinal Dolan, Archbishop of New York"Spitzer's brilliant use of physics, cosmology, psychology, neuroscience, NDE studies, and contemporary philosophy reveals how all disciplines and shared human experiences converge on the truth of our spiritual nature. A grand synthesis from the pen of a master." --Michael Augros, Ph.D., Author, Who Designed the Designer?"An intellectual triumph. Those who think faith is a matter of emotion and self-delusion could not intelligently defend that position if they read this book with an open mind and comprehended its arguments. Magnificent." --Dean Koontz, #1 New York Times Best-Selling Author

By Marc Wirig I would give it more stars if it had been shorter and written for the layman. I think some of the chapters are needlessly difficult in terms of writing style and content and they can be skipped unless someone is well versed in philosophy. I liked the conclusion and appendixes best because they seem to be the clearest and most persuasive. The author is exceptionally well educated and well read. He has done a wonderful service for anyone who contemplates whether God exists or not. It is just a tough slog for the layman to get to the conclusion and appendixes. His reasoning regarding God's existence is persuasive.

By HAROLD J TOUPS The 2nd volume in this quartet is carefully and skillfully put together, gathering evidence for the transcendent from all legitimate quarters, put together by a master teacher. Will take several reads to plumb the depths but appreciating the coherent arguments is available on first read. I just love Fr. Spitzer's work and can't wait for the the next volume.

Difficult Read - Feels like a College Textbook By Tambo The author appears to have poured a lot of effort into this book, as it contains a wealth of information and an extensive compilation of philosophical ideas from many philosophers over the centuries. However, it is a difficult read and presents itself much like a college textbook. Also, the breadth of thoughts introduced is a bit overwhelming. I believe the author would have better served his audience by touching on fewer ideas. On the other hand, I'm not sure who his intended audience is.Some of the key points I learned were about the four pillars of perfection, the nature of God (meaning he is embodiment of those pillars, not simply a being who chooses to "live out" those pillars), and some interesting perspectives and research on identifying the human soul/consciousness. I found myself captivated when Spitzer used examples to illustrate the complex philosophy, but lost and weary when complex ideas were presented while referencing other philosophical ideas as a foundational premise. This is definitely a book that needs to be read multiple times to fully grasp and one where Wikipedia and other Google references can help you fully understand the ideas. If you have a passion for philosophy and want to learn from a master, then this book is for you. If you want ideas presented in a more "user friendly" fashion, then Trent Horn is probably a better choice. One thing I just had to mention, ... the out of body example about the woman identifying a shoe on a ledge which was inaccessible and on a different floor was somehow spooky for me.

If You Give a Mouse a Cookie (If You Give...), by Laura Joffe Numeroff

Amazon.com Review Who would ever suspect that a tiny little mouse could wear out an energetic young boy? Well, if you're going to go around giving an exuberantly bossy rodent a cookie, you'd best be prepared to do one or two more favors for it before your day is through. For example, he'll certainly need a glass of milk to wash down that cookie, won't he? And you can't expect him to drink the milk without a straw, can you? By the time our hero is finished granting all the mouse's very urgent requests--and cleaning up after him--it's no wonder his head is becoming a bit heavy. Laura Joffe Numeroff's tale of warped logic is a sure-fire winner in the giggle-generator category. But concerned parents can rest assured, there's even a little education thrown in for good measure: underneath the folly rest valuable lessons about cause and effect. Felicia Bond's hilarious pictures are full of subtle, fun details. Fans will be happy to know that this dynamic author-illustrator pair teamed up again for If You Give a Moose a Muffin and If You Give a Pig a Pancake. (Great read aloud, ages 4 to 8) --Emilie Coulter

Review "A light confection as suited for use in preschool story hours for beginning readers." --"SLJ."

From the Back Cover

If a hungry little traveler shows up at your house, you might want to give him a cookie. If you give him a cookie, he's going to ask for a glass of milk. He'll want to look in a mirror to make sure he doesn't have a milk mustache, and then he'll ask for a pair of scissors to give himself a trim....

The consequences of giving a cookie to this energetic mouse run the young host ragged, but young readers will come away smiling at the antics that tumble like dominoes through the pages of this delightful picture book.

My soon-to-be 9 year old will occasionally (in secret)read this book now, but from age 3 to 6, it was a bed time favorite! The story is funny, as are the illustrations of the little mouse, making a mess and asking for more things - and it all started by just giving the little fellow a cookie. The hardcover book alone is a great gift item, but it's better yet as a mini book with the cute little stuffed mouse. If you add a small package of chocolate chip cookies, this would make an exceptional gift. Or, if not cookies, a crayon set with some paper is ideal (you have to read the story to understand why!)For kids who want to read and listen, the audio tape will be listened to again and again. This is also one of those books that adults enjoy reading to their children!

By Britt Arnhild Lindland .....you will have hours of fun ahead of you.My favorite time of the day is when I take my kids to bed and read for them. We read different kinds of books, but each child always gets some special favorites. If you give a Mouse a Cookie is among 5 year old Marta's all time favorites. We can read the book over and over again, and the story is just as cute as when we first discovered it.The story starts with a little boy eating cookies outside his house, he sees a mouse and wants to share his cookies with it. The mouse eats the cookie, then asks for a glass of milk, of course the boy gives him some milk, and the story goes on and on. The little mouse asking for more and more, the boy having a wonderful time following his new companion. From a napkin, to scissors to trim his hair, a broom to sweep up, and so on. And the wonderful, funny last page when the mouse asks for a glass of milk, but of course, if you give him a glass of milk the chances are that he will want a cookie to go with it, and we are right back to the start of the book. The most perfect story for a child who always wants repetitions, over and over again. The book is beautifully written by Laure Joffe Numeroff, and the cute drawings to illustrate the story are made by Felicia Bond.Lucky parents and children with books like this to share.Britt Arnhild Lindland

My daughter and I have read this book so many times, she can recite word for word throughout the story. The cassette tape that comes along with the story book is excellent, because after the story is read, there is a fill-in-the-blanks game. Your child fills in the blank. (example - "If you give a mouse a cookie, he's going to ask for a glass of _____.) The answer is milk. And this continues throughout the story. I highly recommend this book. No child's library should be without it!

A Classic adventure story for the whole family

A family struggles to survive on a strange tropical island after their ship is destroyed at sea. This timeless tale was inspired by Daniel Defoe's Robinson Crusoe and is a moral and heartwarming tale of a family on the brink. Much more than the classic film, this novel is a delight for children and adults.

The Swiss Family Robinson (Xist Classics), by Johan David Wyss

From School Library Journal Grade 3-5-- It goes without saying that, in the process of condensing and rewriting these books down to a fourth-grade reading level, most of the distinguished aspects of the works--writing style, language, atmosphere, characterization--have been sacrificed for a simple, not to say simplistic, master-plots approach that conveys the incidents but fails to impart the justification for their continuing endurance in the canon of juvenile literature. The books are illustrated with some attention paid to the sense of the plots and characters. For those who persist in the fallacy that knowing what the so-called "classics" of children's literature are about is a satisfactory substitution for actually experiencing them by reading the original, this series is acceptable. For the rest of us, it's as if someone's painted a guppy white and called it Moby Dick. --Christine Behrmann, New York Public LibraryCopyright 1991 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Review This new series of Illustrated Chosen Classics is a collection of the world's most famous stories, especially retold for children.

167 of 169 people found the following review helpful. Original translation By Stephen Balbach The Swiss Family Robinson was initially written in German by Swiss author Johann Wyss in 1812, and then soon after an accurate English translation was completed by William Godwin in 1816. The Godwin translation remained the standard in English for a generation or two, but by the mid-19th century the number and variety of English translations began to multiply - there were no enforceable copyright laws and translators freely added episodes, changed names (and even genders) of some of the characters and cut portions of the text to conform to changing views on education and aesthetic tastes. There are probably over a dozen such variations and most who read the novel today are not reading the original (the 2007 Penguin Classics edition, edited by John Seelye, is the 1816 Godwin translation, which is the closest to the original). I have now read two: William Kingston's 1879 adaptation (one of the more common adaptations) and Godwin, and I believe the original translation of Wyss by Godwin is better. It's not abridged like most later versions so certain scenes just make more sense - for example some of the characters are more dynamic, like Ernest shows himself to be a capable bloodthirsty killer like his brothers (a scene cut from later editions to maintain his "bookish" nature) - and the theories on education are classic Rousseauian (he is mentioned twice in the narrative). This isn't your childhood Swiss family. Godwin's 1816 translation has rarely been in print until recently - most versions floating around are some variation of Isabelle de Montolieu's 1824 French adaptation (William H. G. Kingston's 1879 English translation of Montolieu's French adaption is probably the most common). In Montolieu/Kingston's version, the original ~400 page that Wyss wrote has been abridged to about 150 pages, with an additional 150 pages or so of new material added to the end (with an entirely different ending, new characters, etc). So if you've read Swiss family as a child, and are looking for an "unabridged" version, you may find Godwin's 1816 translation missing a lot of material - simply because Wyss never wrote it in the first place. What version to read? I would say Montolieu/Kingston's version (and others) are more "kid friendly" mainly because the Godwin translation is from 1816 and as such uses some language that is dated and has passages that would probably be boring or not make sense without historical context. So in a way there is no "right" version since most readers for the past 150 years have not been reading the "original" anyway. I would probably recommend the Montolieu/Kingston version for juvenile readers and the Godwin version for adults - or even better, read all of Godwin plus the second half of Montolieu/Kingston which is all new material, the first half just being an abridged version of Godwin. In the end I enjoyed the novel for what it is - a great adventure and inspiring family story. Many classic stories are challenging and interesting but not always "fun" - this one is just a great story and fun to read. It's even more fun knowing there are is a whole world of alternative versions available, with more adventures and different endings, but I'm glad to have read the original as it was written by Wyss (and his sons).

By Kiwi Check the publisher very carefully before you buy "Swiss Family Robinson." One of the versions available, published by General Books LLC, has reviews associated with completely different imprints of the book from genuine publishers.Be warned that the contents of the version of Swiss Family Robinson published by General Books LLC is completely unedited garbage. Also be warned that when you do the "Look Inside," you're not looking at the General Books LLC version, you're looking at an image of the book from a genuine publisher that actually edits and checks their work. And the reason is....General Books LLC puts together books using an OCR automated scanning device which misses complete pages. There are numerous Typos and there's no table of contents. There is ABSOLUTELY NO EDITING of any kind done to the book, and the scanning is done by a robot (which the publishers website says can miss pages). This is all stated on the publishers web site (google them and read - you'll be as stunned as I was when you get all the details). The Almost every review of books published by General Books LLC (around 500,000 of them from one imprint or another now listed on Amazon) by buyers is negative, many are extremely so.If you have bought the version from General Books LLC by mistake, you can return to Amazon within 30 days(but check Amazon's Return Policy for the details) .Personally, I always liked Swiss Family Robinson, my one star review is for the General Books LLC version.

I doubt many would finish reading it in these days given how dated the language and story line feel. My one-star rating is solely due to the fact that this particular version is incomplete. The missing pages have a profound impact on enjoying / gaining a full understanding of the story. I feel the version description should mention the missing text!

Poka City Blues, by A.L. Gibson

Review Poka City Blues by A.L. Gibson drew me in. Set in 1930s Poka City Blues brings tolight a difficult but realistic insight into a period of time whenbigotry is rife and political correctness hasn't been invented. This story will stay with the reader long after that last paragraph. Ica Iova, Reader's FavoritePoka City Blues by A.L. Gibson is by far one of the most original and well-crafted novels I've read in a long time. I was completely drawn in and absolutely loved the author's use of description of the different scenery, locales, and her attention to detail for the time period. There is a lot of life and drama in these pages. Laura Clarke, Indie Book ReviewersA. L. Gibson has penned an intriguing fictional story in Poka City Blues. Written from the perspective of Sedelia, a black woman in her mid-70s,you are taken on a chilling journey through her life experiences. She writes of being dirt poor, picking cotton, her "skirt-chasing" father, the Ku Klux Klan, rape, murder and more. Red City ReviewsTo say this is totally unlike anything I've ever read before would be an understatement. Poka City Blues is brutal and in your face - the author holds little back. I was enraptured in this dramatic tale the whole way through. Essie Harmon, Indie Book Reviewers

By Kitty Smith "Poka City Blues" is one of those stories that grabs you by the heart and won't let go. Sedelia's life story is both heartwrenching and hopeful, but always full of love and family even in the darkest times. It's history, and history is rarely genteel or pretty, but throughout it all Sedelia remains strong amid the love of her family and friends. It reads like a front porch storytelling, with Sedalia on the glider across from you, spinning a story of her life, the bulk of which happened before I was even born. Born in 1939 in Loachapoka, Alabama to a poor family of cotton pickers, she grows up proud of their garden and chickens, reveling in the feel of dark, damp soil between her fingers, the taste of cornbread dipped in buttermilk, and the sight of a junebug flying with a silk thread tied to its leg. They didn't have much, but they had each other. From Aunt Azalea's ever running mouth that was prone to catching gnats, to Papa tossing firecrackers at crazy Rose's fat behind, her story made me smile and giggle. It also made me angry, the dirty old men who tried to look down her blouse while she cleaned their homes as a child, and the horrible abuse she endured from Fannie and the boys in the cabbage field. Above all it charmed me, and it is a story that will stay with me for a long time. Sedelia is one of those characters with a spine of steel and a story that will bewitch you, and I'm so glad I found this book.

I started reading the book at night and had to force myself to stop and sleep. This is how much I was engrossed in the book. I love the way the author has written about Sedelia's life in such a tasteful way. Even though she warns from the onset that it would not be a pretty story, I was not afraid to find out what was about to unfold. The story is set in the 1930's, in the cotton picking Southern part of America, Alabama. The author recount's Sedelia's life journey, and how her family suffered a lot of hardship, while living in one of the harshest times in black American history, but bore it gracefully. I love the story of Sedelia and her family, though poor in material things, they were rich in love, towards one another. This story really tugged at my heart strings. I found myself in tears a number of times at the amount of cruelty that Sedelia faced. From suffering abuse at the hands of a trusted neighbor, to enduring several other abuses, I found this book really emotional. At the same time there were many occasions that brought a smile to my face, like when her Mama gave Fannie (Bug), a good whooping for being cruel to Sedelia, I could not help but laugh out loud in satisfaction. This is a brilliant book on all counts. Despite all the cruelty we read about, It is also a story of real love that endured despite betrayals and indiscretions; a book about strong black men and women, who continued to stand strong in spite of tragedy, heartache, pain and betrayal. I highly recommend this book.

Gibson's "Poka City Blues" is a book about an African-American woman's experience growing up in Alabama during a tumultuous time. The protagonist, Sedelia , grows up in a poor family whose primary income is from picking cotton. Written as though the narrator is sitting across from you and sharing her powerful stories, the book really draws you into the era, the pain, the joy, the many memories. From stories of intimidation by the KKK to stories of rape to stories of time with family, "Poka City Blues" gives the reader a full-spectrum look at one person's life during a troubling time. If you want to read an emotional story about a powerful woman who endured many trials, then "Poka City Blues" is a must-read.

It is concise and to the point without a confusing amount of text. That does not mean that we do no have to talk about the background of the questions and answers. But in order to study for the test it provides exactly the amount of information needed.

She has compared it with other texts her friends have used and it is easy-to-use and thorough. Several page references are off, but the information is there. She pleased and is feeling very confident as she prepares for the test.
