In this story, a librarian starts getting freaked out over bumps in the night. She knows that her dead husband would have said that it was all in her head but to her it was real. The ending had a wonderful twist. This was a delightful short read!

I had an inkling that I wouldn't be wild about this one because the h had been in love with the H for years - an unrequited love theme. However there are other books in this series with topics that I haven't loved but the author persuaded me regardless. Here we know that the H is a drop-dead gorgeous up and coming actor with women falling at his feet and in his bed. The h has known him for 6 years because he's her best friend's brother. The h went off to Paris to get a bit of polish and to grow up a bit and when she returned she sees the H at a New Year's party being held at his brother's place. The h makes a bold move and kisses him. A tantalising set up for this novel.+++Spoilers+++I truly feel that the author got the balance in this book wrong. I felt that the h was a pitiful girl, who didn't have a lot going for her. Her family doesn't care for her, she's loved the H for 6 years (he has no idea) and now she's pining after him and of course he was her first kiss and she's never given herself to anyone. The H wants to be loved by everyone - he has 3 loving siblings even though he lost his parents whilst a teenager. He is gorgeous and women love him. Total imbalance before we start. Somehow the h gets the H to take notice of her and she uses another character to make him jealous. Eventually the H gives in and starts a 'secret' relationship with her. The more I read the worse it got. The H never really takes a chance on her and she gives him everything. It seems there always has to be a drama before he will make a stand. On the night of her birthday he disrespects her by being photographed out and about with 2 of his beautiful costars despite promising her he'd come back to her. She encouraged him every step of the way with his career and pushed him to go after the role he really wanted and he repays her by treating her badly once again. She finally stands up for herself and he lets her go without blinking. I thought the h was growing a backbone but when he eventually decides he wants her after a few months, she forgives him on the same day that he reappears. The ending was appallingly cliched with many of the characters from the other books being included in the 'make up' moment. It reminded me of a cheesy movie moment. The long and the short of this book is that the h was on the minus side and the H had everything going for him. There is no way to persuade me that these 2 would make it in the long run - the romance totally lacked credibility.I've come to expect way more from this author and this was an absolute miss for me. I've preordered the next in the series and I'm hoping that Ms Grace will produce her usual fine work in June.

By Books Laid Bare & Books Laid Bare Boys Time and tide wait for no man, so when a young Zoey is left in no doubt that her best friend Tegan’s older brother is firmly planted on the definitely off limits side of the fence – she does what any self-respecting young woman would do – she doesn’t hang about to pine over him right under his nose, she turns her back and leaves. But distance doesn’t diminish the way she feels about Blake and when after two years she makes it back state side she has one thing on her mind- she will get her man-Blake Callahan.Hiding in plain sight Blake has no option but to deal with Zoey, she works on the set of his movie. But relationships have never been high on his agenda, they have taken more effort than he has been prepared to put in, women always ending up wanting to talk about the one topic he doesn’t ever want to discuss. Zoey has one foot in the door though because through her relationship with Tegan, she doesn’t need to bring up his past – she already knows and she understand show painful it is for not only Blake but all the kids, losing your parents was always going to result in a subject that is not open for discussion with just anyone. While the two years apart may have changed little between them in respect that they have a friendship that has stood the test of time, it is only now that Blake can see the woman that Zoey has become and while the connection between them is strong they both have reasons for questioning whether changing their status is a good idea.Blake has just started to get noticed and is beginning to make it in the movie world, and we all know that a private life in that field is just never going to happen, so how would Zoey cope with the scrutiny that being with Blake would bring up on her and moreover how would she manage if they tried and it all fell apart – the Callahan’s are all she has.But as with all these situations, the heart wants what it wants and neither hell nor high water is going to get in its way, even if he has to be given a bit of a kick start in the pursuit of his happiness department!Zoey was delightful, a little naive at first but I admired her determination to get her man. She worked hard at being the woman he could rely on and kept much of her true character discreetly hidden under her exquisite cultivated exterior. She had much to learn about live and love as did Blake in many respects but I have to say that despite the stuttering start I was relieved that they managed to get there in the end, I think I would have kicked his butt if they hadn’t!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Girl next door + Movie star = Perfect combination By The Pleasure of Reading Today This is the first book I read of this series and after finishing I went back and got the other ones.Zoey has been in love with Blake since she can remember, problem is, he never gave her the time of day other than as a friend being that she was his best friend's little sister. She felt like she was a little nerdy and inadequate, so in order to reinvent herself she moves to Paris for two years. When she comes back she's a bit more refined, more experienced, and she still have one goal in sight, Blake.Blake is a rising movie star, he's popular with the ladies, and just finished filming what it's suppose to be the movie to boost his career. He's at Beachwood Bay filming a low budget film and is there on new years eve when he sees the new and improved Zoey. But Blake being the oblivious man that he is completely ignores Zoey and her efforts to get his attention until jealousy enters the picture and he throws down the white flag. This was a very enjoyable and cute story, it was well paced and the writing was captivating. While I loved Zoey's "go get it" attitude I felt like she didn't give enough credit at times and just went above and beyond to get her target even when he was completely ignoring her or did something stupid. And Blake, there were moments I wanted to smack the man... hard! The stunt he pulled in NY was just not acceptable after all the love and support that Zoey had shown for him. I have to say that I kind of hated him a bit for that. But all of that is what makes an ordinary book a good book, the ability of the author to bring out strong emotions on the readers.I recommend this book and I hope you like it as much as I did.Girl next door + Movie star = Perfect combination

In this first book of the series about the women of Valley View,Sharon creates characters who grow on you and capture your heart. Callie's own heart is breaking because a child she tried to help as a social worker is now dead. Dare she try to help another one so soon? But she is drawn to Iris like a moth to flame. Her attempts to help Iris and her sister Samantha begin simply, but turn into something much more dramatic that will tug at your heartstrings and have you rooting for this precious family to be reunited. How Sharon brings Callie's life full circle and restores her faith in her ability to help children makes for a wonderful read. I'm looking forward to reading more about Callie's friends in Valley View.

What an emotional tug-of-war for the heroine! I found myself waking up the morning after reading the book, wondering how Callie was doing, and hoping Sam, Iris and Bobbie were safe. I fought the urge to pray for them all! This is truly the sign of a great book. Highly recommended! - Janice Thompson, author of Queen of the Waves

The characters are so alive, so natural and personable, and the circumstances anguishing. Can you imagine a seventeen-year-old girl raising a family? Fearful that her eleven-year-old sister and her four-month-old baby could be taken from her by an addicted father who abandoned them ten years ago? When Callie tries to come to their rescue, she provides more problems than help. Help is something 17 year old Samantha doesn't want, even shirks from. Samantha's biggest fear is abandonment - again. Will Callie leave her, too, like her father did ten years ago when she was only seven? Callie's deep faith alienates Samantha from her. How could Callie's God solve her problems when He left her and her sister and caused her mother's death? What kind of God would do that?Samantha needs to accept Callie's help. Trust is a huge issue for everyone involved in this story, especially Samantha. Since Samantha took on the role of parent at her young age, can she trust Callie and her husband Benton who want to help? Can she trust them to not divulge their secret to the authorities? The ones who could separate the fragile family unit, two sisters and a baby.Read this wonderful story to find out. You will not be disappointed.

The Age of Innocence, by Edith Wharton

Amazon.com Review Somewhere in this book, Wharton observes that clever liars always come up with good stories to back up their fabrications, but that really clever liars don't bother to explain anything at all. This is the kind of insight that makes The Age of Innocence so indispensable. Wharton's story of the upper classes of Old New York, and Newland Archer's impossible love for the disgraced Countess Olenska, is a perfectly wrought book about an era when upper-class culture in this country was still a mixture of American and European extracts, and when "society" had rules as rigid as any in history.

From Library Journal This 19th-century classic, read by Andrew Sachs, is a tale of betrayal, gold, and love, encased in the elegant symmetrical structure so popular in traditional English fiction, featuring Marner, the weaver, who is framed for theft by his best friend and becomes a recluse, focusing his strong affections only on the store of golden coins he receives in payment for his work. As usual, Chivers has produced an excellent audio presentation of a literary masterpiece. Alas, in this day and age fewer and fewer readers not enrolled in literature classes actually read the works of what are frequently referred to as "dead white males" even if, as in this case, they were actually written by a woman. For this reason, this title is recommended for all academic but only larger public libraries.-I. Pour-El, Iowa State Univ., Ames Copyright 2000 Reed Business Information, Inc.

A Solinas It was a glittering, sumptuous time when hypocrisy was expected, discreet infidelity tolerated, and unconventionality ostracized. That is the Gilded Age, and nobody knew its hypocrises better than Edith Wharton.... and nobody portrayed them as well. "The Age of Innocence" is a trip back in time to the stuffy upper crust of "old New York," taking us through one respectable man's hopeless love affair with a beautiful woman -- and the life he isn't brave enough to have.Newland Archer, of a wealthy old New York family, has become engaged to pretty, naive May Welland. But as he tries to get their wedding date moved up, he becomes acquainted with May's exotic cousin, Countess Ellen Olenska, who has returned home after dumping her cheating husband. At first, the two are just friends, but Newland becomes more and more entranced by the Countess' easy, free-spirited European charm. After Newland marries May, the attraction to the mysterious Countess and her free, unconventional life becomes even stronger. He starts to rebel in little ways, but he's still mired in a 100% conventional marriage, job and life. Will he become an outcast and go away with the beautiful countess, or will he stick with May and the safe, dull life that he has condemned in others? There's nothing too scandalous about "Age of Innocence" in a time when starlets acquire and discard boyfriends and husbands like old pantyhose -- it probably wasn't in the 1920s when it was first published. But then, this isn't a book about sexiness and steam -- it's part bittersweet romance, part social satire, and a look at what happens when human beings lose all spontaneity and passion.Part of this is due to Wharton's portrayal of New York in the 1870s -- opulent, cultured, pleasant, yet so tied up in tradition that few people in it are able to really open up and live. It's a haze of ballrooms, gardens, engagements, and careful social rituals that absolutely MUST be followed, even if they have no meaning. It's a place "where the real thing was never said or done or even thought."And Wharton writes distant, slightly mocking prose that outlines this sheltered little society. Her writing opens as slowly and beautifully as a rosebud, letting subtle subplots and powerful, hidden emotions drive the story. So don't be discouraged by the endless conversations about flowers, ballrooms, gloves and old family scandals that don't really matter anymore. In the middle of all this, Newland is a rather dull, intelligent young man who thinks he's unconventional. But he becomes more interesting as he struggles between his conscience and his longing for the Countess. And as "Age of Innocence" winds on, you gradually see that he doesn't truly love the Countess, but what she represents -- freedom from society and convention. The other two angles of this love triangle are May and Ellen. May is (suitably) pallid and rather dull, though she shows some different sides in the last few chapters. And Ellen is a magnificent character -- alluring, mysterious, but also bewildered by New York's hostility to her ways. And she's even more interesting when you realize that she isn't trying to rebel, but simply being herself."Age of Innocence" is a subtle look at life in Gilded Age New York, telling the story of a man desperately in love with a way of life he hasn't got the courage to pursue. Exquisite in its details, painful in its beauty.

A book that should be shared between mothers and daughters By A Customer I find it interesting and in some ways disturbing how few (openly at least) female viewpoints are expressed among the reviews of this book. Indeed, some of reviews make it appear that there are quite a few males out there who believe females are a sexual "tabula rasa" on which they can write their judgements of what constitutes morally appropriate behavior. This book must be understood not simply as art, but as a psychological statement, namely that sexuality exists within each of us from infancy on and parents and society deny that at their own risk. When I was the age of the girls in this book there was no one with the courage to come forward and openly depict the flowering of female sexuality. I lived with confusion and shame about my body and my desires, hurtful feelings that lasted until I was well into my adulthood.I came across this book in a store one day while looking for something else. I spotted the title and I vaguely remembered a news story about some people wanting to ban it, so I thought I would look at it out of curiosity. The images in it were so beautiful I almost started to cry right there, it was as though I found vindication for the very core of my being. After taking it home, I decided to share it with my nine-year old daughter with whom I had just recently had "The Talk". It was wonderful being able to show her how her body would change and how she would be beautiful even as she changed from a girl into a woman. It is true there are already books out there that are supposed to address the issue, but so often they take a clinical approach that is scary in its own right. The artistry of this book, combined with the photographer's selection of natural-looking girls (you will not find made-up or coiffed girls in the pages of this book), will, in my opinion, help any girl appreciate her changing body.Mothers, share this book with your daughters, it will help make so clear the many changes they are going through and how they are positive. No girl should ever have to feel shame of her own body and this book is an important step.

By Mary Whipple Newland Archer, the protagonist of this ironically entitled novel set in the late nineteenth century, is a proper New York gentleman, and part of a society which adheres to strict social codes, subordinating all aspects of life to doing what is expected, which is synonymous with doing what it right. As the author remarks early in the novel, "Few things were more awful than an offense against Taste." Newland meets and marries May Welland, an unimaginative, shallow young woman whose upbringing has made her the perfect, inoffensive wife, one who knows how to behave and how to adhere to the "rules" of the society in which they live. When Newland is reintroduced to May's cousin, Countess Ellen Olenska, who has left her husband in Europe and now wants a divorce, he finds himself utterly captivated by her independence and her willingness to risk all, socially, by flouting convention. Both Ellen and Newland are products of their upbringing and their culture, however, and they resist their feelings because of their separate social obligations. Various meetings between them suggest that their feelings are far stronger than what is obvious on the surface, and the question of whether they will finally state the obvious or act on their feelings constitutes the plot.Wharton creates an exceptionally realistic picture of New York in the post-Civil War era, a time in which aristocrats of inherited wealth found themselves competing socially with parvenus. Her ability to show the conflict between a person's need for social acceptance and the desire for personal freedom is striking. As the various characters make their peace with their decisions--either to challenge or yield to social dictates--the novel achieves an unusual dramatic tension, subtle because of its lack of direct confrontation and powerful in its effects on individual destinies. This is, in fact, less an "age of innocence" than it is an age of social manipulation.Wharton herself manipulates the reader--some of her best dialogues and scenes are those the characters never actually have--conversations that they imagine, confrontations which they never allow themselves to have, and resolutions which happen through inaction rather than through decision-making. Filled with acute social observations, the novel shows individuals convincing themselves that obeying social dictates is the right thing to do. Though the novel sometimes seems claustrophobic due to its limitations on action, Age of Innocence brilliantly captures the age and attitudes of the era. Mary Whipple

This made the whole thing unbelievable even though it is well written for a serious reader with challenging vocabulary and great By TM I hoped that this book would give me an incite into the Crusades and the reasons behind why they took place. It did that to some degree but unfortunately the plot was poorly assembled with repetitive happenings; narrow escapes, mercy shown by captors, fluke co-incidences. This made the whole thing unbelievable even though it is well written for a serious reader with challenging vocabulary and great metaphors and the like.

The Dead Man's Doll, a quick trip with the Gears to the People of the Songtrail By Krhodig Take a quick trip back in time with Gears in The Dead Man’s Doll, where we meet Asson, a character the readers will get to know much better in a later story. Asson is on his way to help the ghost of the young warrior, Madyrut. Venturing into People of the Masks’ territory, his people’s old enemy, he helps her to see the Star Road in the sky with the bridge that leads to the Land of the Dead. He is lead to the area where she fell in battle by her ghost but before he can help send her on her way, a young People of the Masks boy appears. At the same time the reader meets Young William, a slave aboard a Norse knorr, a trading ship. His master, Wulfstan the Tall puts him charge of keeping an eye on a young woman held captive and being sent into exile on this voyage. Said to be a powerful prophetess and witch for the Danish King, Sweyn the Forkbeard, she was captured in the St. Brice Day massacre of Danelaw where many presumed her husband and young daughter were killed with the rest of the Danes in the English territory. Reaching the shores of Vinland, they leave her to her fate on the sandy and icy beach. Asson works to help the ghosts leave for the Sky Road, working to figure out why Madyrut is kept on Earth, along with the boy, Gausep. He finds the answer with help from Gausep after digging and discovering a doll. Then, from afar Asson, and the ghosts witness the woman’s exile and without knowing it, the woman helps both ghosts. Asson makes his way down to the beach and sees the power residing within the woman and offers to teach her the things she needs to know about the land and the people who call it home. She consents, knowing that his help will be vital in order for her to wait for her husband and daughter’s eventual coming. Keep up with the quick pace of the story and find out who the Dead Man’s Doll is and how the role of the Prophetess is linked with the People of the Songtrail in Vinland.

The Character introduction of Asson how his abilities were used to help a young woman Madryut find the bridge to the land of the Dead. With the descriptions of the opposing tribes beliefs in what happens to spirits after death. Asson finds that Gausep is the reason Madryut is caught in this world. His adventure is supplemented with the events of the exile of Vethrid. Her exile shows us William a slave of the norsemen and some of the events following St. Brice Day massacre of the Danelaw, ordered by King Aethelred.

One man's love is forever. Even when he's gone. WARNING: this book will rip your heart out An end that marks a new journey. And now, a new beginning in a wholly unexpected way. One man’s love prevails beyond a lifetime and propels everyone in its wake forward. "I am that gash in her soul. Once I loved her, really loved her. And she loved me, and it was so fucking beautiful. Once. That pendulum swings to and fro. We’re here, and then we’re— No. How can that rare beautiful be rendered irrelevant, intangible when I still feel so damn much? Does all that energy, that glory, that significance simply dissolve? Turn to smoke? To nothing? It can’t. It just can’t. Are the moments that shape us absolutely random? Is time not fluid? I made promises to them, to her. Especially to her. Promises I still burn to keep." "Random & Rare" is the SEQUEL to "Lock & Key", book 1 of the Lock & Key Series. Book 1 must be read first. This is a contemporary motorcycle club romance novel This novel contains adult language, sex, violence and is intended for mature audiences.

We get Dig's POV for a little more than the first half of the book and some questions I had from Lock & Key were answered and some misconceptions cleared up. Dig's past was really put into the forefront and it made sense as to why he was the way he was. We get Grace's POV for the rest of the book and find out where she and Miller stand in their quest for a baby. When things don't work out during their first try at surrogacy, Grace spirals into a depression and stays distant from Miller. We find that she has regrets waiting to have a baby with Dig and feels that this whole thing is her fault. Miller and Boner try to pull her out of her depression but it isn't until an unexpected person from the past appears that she is finally given the hope that it will turn out all right. She is reminded of Dig's Latin mantra and decides to take it to heart and start acting on it. Tania shows up unexpectedly back in Grace's life and tries to get Grace back on the right path. When a short trip to scout for antiques goes awry, we find Grace in a difficult situation with Creeper again and we meet her new savior who provides Grace with a gift that was from the heart and provides her with her hopes and dreams. Very nicely done and was just as happy with this book as the first one. I usually do not read paranormal books but this was done in such a great way that I didn't have any issues with it at all.

I love Cat Porter’s writing, I loved that the hero/heroine were a little older, and most of all I loved getting into Grace’s past story. The majority of Random & Rare IS that story. It’s the story of Dig and Grace. And it’s told from Dig’s pov.Dig was one of my favorite characters in the first book. I adore Miller, don’t get me wrong. But Dig is something special. Seeing his relationship with Grace, the things leading up to it was great. What I really loved was how loyal he was. I know being a biker tests you when it comes to doing the right thing/fidelity, and Dig always seemed to pass the test. No matter what other women came his way, deep down he knew that Grace was special and that she was the only woman for him.Dig’s part of the story was probably the first 65%. It was most definitely my favorite part. The last bit takes place in the present. It starts off where Lock & Key left off. With Miller and Grace.Grace is going through a hard time. For personal reasons, I could completely sympathize to how she was feeling.Grace should be the happiest woman alive. After losing everything that ever mattered to her many years ago, she finally is at a good place. She has a man. A man that means the world to her. After losing Dig, she never thought she would have that again. But Miller is all that and more. I don’t want to go into all their issues, but I really felt for Grace and what she was going through. I thought it was the most special thing that everything came full circle for them. And I feel like that was all Dig…This series is a real win if you’re looking for a great set of biker books. They have a perfect mix of steam, emotion, action, grit and suspense. They also have a lot of love and devotion. You will adore all these characters. And the writing is really top notch. Thought it was painful and emotional to read at times, the ending left a big smile on my face. This is a book and a series I would highly recommend.

Faltys From what others have told me, I knew that not having read the previous book in this series would leave me feeling a bit cheated. But my love for books set in the MC world, and those full of angst, had me eagerly turning the first page. By the time I was done I was completely captivated by this emotionally intense read and its theme of the choices we make and the ability to move on from the past. From the unforgettable character of Dig to his forever love Grace to her new love Miller this is a story that puts you through a rainbow of emotions with its unique viewpoint and it now has me wanting to get my hands on the previous book while hoping for another installment in the future.Dig's ending was clear in the previous installment, and in the prologue here, but in this book we dig deeper to see how his actions affected the story then and now. We fall further in love with a man who loved Grace with his whole being. We discover his rough early years that made him the man Grace loved and the reasons behind the choices he made. It's a sensual journey too as he laid claim to Grace through much-needed moments of joy and happiness. Their love was clearly destined to be, but with so many events coming to a head, it was clear that their love would burn out just as brightly. His love for Grace warred with his love for his Brothers and left him pulled in many directions. Ultimately Dig's an admirable man that tried to do right by everyone he cared about and bring happiness to Grace. His ending was an emotional blaze of glory that brought tears to my eyes and left my heart broken. He may be gone but he's definitely not forgotten!Grace returns to helm the latter half of the story and reminds us of how much Dig meant to so many people. She may have moved on but she owes much to the decisions Dig made and he'd be happy to see how she and her family are doing. Though club business and a face from the past are putting a damper on Grace and Miller's happiness, life with Miller is a bit calmer but just as intense. Throughout it all Grace is a lucky woman to have found two such compelling and powerful men to love. I liked Grace for the most part and her final words put a bow on the love story of Dig/Grace/Miller, a story that was gutwrenching but well-worth every tear I shed. I hope this isn't the end though. Yes, Grace and Miller have earned their ride into the sunset but there's the remaining One-Eyed Jacks who I'd love to see more of. They too were affected by Dig's choices and I'd love to see more in-depth how it's affected them throughout the years. From start to finish this story affected me like no other! Its uniqueness caught me off guard, as did the plethora of emotions it engendered, and I can't recommend it highly enough. Just make sure you have a tissue nearby....
