Studying for the GMAT can be a humbling experience. We're asked to dust off mostly high school math skills and apply them in new ways that we've never had to before. And before we know it, we're left stymied and frustrated - often wondering whether business school really is the right idea. Well, it just doesn't have to be that way. This book will make certain that you become fully versed in the essential quant fundamentals that will position you to master the vast majority of 500-600 level questions on the GMAT quant section. Due to the adaptive nature of the GMAT, you must first fully master these foundational levels before concerning yourself with more difficult problems involving things like permutations, combinations, probability and overlapping sets. Why? Because the test won't even ask you the more difficult questions until you're getting the easier ones correct first. My name is Steven Brachman, and since 2008, I've helped hundreds of GMAT students reach their goals. This book is a very close representation of the initial tutoring session that I give to almost all new students. The book is meant to be conversational and casual in nature, and you'll find it to be extremely user-friendly. What you'll likely find in reading it is that there were at least a few areas within your fundamental GMAT Math process with holes in them that won't have them after you've absorbed the material in this book. So, let's make certain that your core algebra, geometry, number properties, fractions/decimals/percents, exponents, foundational data sufficiency, and much more, are well fortified to provide you with the proper foundation to launch you into the 600s and beyond...

Fantastic GMAT Math Prep Guide By Amazon Customer Prepping for the GMAT is always a difficult and frustrating task, even for people who think themselves ahead of the curve. I do have to admit this book really sets itself apart. It’s clear, instructive and easy to work through. I’ve used various study aids in the past; including Kaplan and Manhattan GMAT; however, the GMAT EXpress Math Foundation prep book is definitely one of the best resources available for GMAT Math prep. It definitely hones in on your skills to perfection and provides you with examples to hammer in the concepts you need to excel. Great buy for anyone who wants to set themselves apart.

Very User Friendly...A Must-Have By Ryan Elazari I have been studying for the GMAT for close to a year and I can't stress how much this guide has helped me. This book does an excellent job of explaining the Math section of the GMAT. I have been struggling with the Math section and the guide has been able to strengthen my craft. This guide does an excellent job of showing what strategies to use. I highly recommend this guide to anyone who is interested in taking the GMAT and beating your target score without having to buy expensive study materials.

I have had so many realizations on how little I actually know about the GMAT and learned so many little tricks going through this guide. I definitely recommend this read for all levels since you never completely know it all when it comes to the GMAT exam.

Maid Service for my Husband and Me. Chandler and Marline Stewart put out an ad searching for a maid. They needed someone to clean their house and watch their kids and do anything that they needed. They had gone through a few interviews until Joan walks through the door. She's a tall black woman with beautiful natural curls. She had an extensive resume and was very qualified. They hired her on the spot. Joan worked for them for a few short months before Chandler started propositioning her for other than what was on her job description. He wasn’t the only one that was advancing her though. Behind Chandler’s back Marline was also coming onto Joan. Marline was a bi-sexual woman that loved her husband but also loved the occasional woman on the side. Chandler allowed her to do this because it turned him on. Then one day they decided they were going to try and advance her together. Joan was attracted to both of them so she decided it wouldn’t be so bad. When she got hired though she had no idea this was going to happen, but she quite enjoyed coming to work after a while. Eventually they made her a live in maid so she would be closer. After a while though Joan grew tired of this and tried to get out but it was going to be harder than what she thought. She might be stuck in this life forever. Borrow this Great Book TODAY!! 0 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I don't want to be a maid By J.E.Andrews I am surprised that this was called a romance. Joan is hired as a maid but after a week she moves into the pool house. There isn't a lot of sex but it is implied between her and the couple. That is until she doesn't want it to continue. Then all hell breaks loose. Thankfully Juan is there for Joan and can help her get back on her feet. The ending is very abrupt so there may be a part 2.

I didn't like this book as much as I did the previous book I read from this series. Amy a teacher returns to Collingswoth to help take care for her sister in law- she again meets after 8 years her teenage crush now a widower with a child. The entire book is about her overcoming her teenage disappointments, and giving a chance to a relationship with Will (widower). She can't forget she was not number one, and is willing to blow it all away because of it. A few chaste kisses, just a lot of praying in this book.

Will is a widower with a daughter and he works for Lance Jessa's husband. Amy Cami's sister in law has come to the manor to help for the summer and sees Will for the first time in 8 yrs and remembers her heartbreak of the past add she was sure that God meant Will to be the man for her she was 15 at the time, as the summer progresses so do feelings. This is a wonderful read it will make you laugh and maybe shed a tear or two and show how God's plan works for them. can't wait for the next book in the series

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Sweet Christian romance By Sue Reviews I have enjoyed all of the books in this series. They are sweet clean romances, and the characters all have some internal struggle that they work to overcome, With this story in particular I felt it was a little slow of pace. I normally devour books, bit this one I nibbled at over many days, I think the plot and storyline are really good, I just am not sure it's written in a way that it pulls at the readers emotions enough. I can easily put it down, Overall it's still a refreshingly clean story and worth a read.

Studies have shown that students who don't read during the summer break see their reading abilities decline. Not good. If you're looking for a fun way to keep your kids reading than you might want to try Summer Learning Handbook for Creative Kids 60 Day Plan. This book will keep your child reading while completing fun activity pages. Simply have your child complete 5-6 pages a day which is about 2 hours. The child will use library books or books from home to find spelling words, copywork and write or draw what they read. You can have your child check out books on trees, butterflies, mechanics, etc. (and books of their choosing too) to keep them learning all summer long. There is also a Film Study page. Have your child watch a YouTube tutorial or a documentary, or something from the nature channel, etc. to complete this page (and learn about animals, trucks, etc.).And one last thing, if your son or daughter is not creative, it's okay, they can still use this book and will probably be a bit more creative ;)I have 3 boys using another journal and I've seen them draw things that they otherwise wouldn't have. On their own they wouldn't go outside and find something in nature to draw but they do now (sometimes I let them pick something to draw from a book. It could be a leaf, bug, tree, or animal). There is also a page for them to design something, my boys use this page to draw all kinds of battle plans or airplanes or tank trucks :) (I received a copy of this book for my honest review. I was not required to give a positive review nor was I compensated in any other way. I am disclosing this in accordance with the FTC regulations)

By MammaDana My daughter just finished up the Winter version and even though it's not quite summer we have moved onto this journal. She likes to rush through and not do her best, the summer journal doesn't have quite as many pages each day so I can encourage her to slow down and do her best so that this represents something she can be proud of.

Presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald J. Trump lays out his professional and personal worldview in this classic work—a firsthand account of the rise of America’s foremost deal-maker.   “I like thinking big. I always have. To me it’s very simple: If you’re going to be thinking anyway, you might as well think big.”—Donald J. Trump  Here is Trump in action—how he runs his organization and how he runs his life—as he meets the people he needs to meet, chats with family and friends, clashes with enemies, and challenges conventional thinking. But even a maverick plays by rules, and Trump has formulated time-tested guidelines for success. He isolates the common elements in his greatest accomplishments; he shatters myths; he names names, spells out the zeros, and fully reveals the deal-maker’s art. And throughout, Trump talks—really talks—about how he does it. Trump: The Art of the Deal is an unguarded look at the mind of a brilliant entrepreneur—the ultimate read for anyone interested in the man behind the spotlight.   Praise for Trump: The Art of the Deal   “Trump makes one believe for a moment in the American dream again.”—The New York Times   “Donald Trump is a deal maker. He is a deal maker the way lions are carnivores and water is wet.”—Chicago Tribune   “Fascinating . . . wholly absorbing . . . conveys Trump’s larger-than-life demeanor so vibrantly that the reader’s attention is instantly and fully claimed.”—Boston Herald   “A chatty, generous, chutzpa-filled autobiography.”—New York PostFrom the Hardcover edition.

Trump: The Art of the Deal, by Donald J. Trump, Tony Schwartz

From Publishers Weekly This boastful, boyishly disarming, thoroughly engaging personal history offers an inside look at aspects of financing, development and construction in big-time New York real estate. "I don't do it for the money," maintains Trump, the son of a Queens realtor who, at age 27, bought and transfigured the colossal Hotel Commodore at Grand Central Terminal. Now 40, he has built, among other projects, and owns outright, Fifth Avenue's retail and residential Trump Tower (where he occupies a double-triplex suite); owns and operates Trump's Castle, a casino in Atlantic City; is arguably the most visible young man on Manhattan's celebrity circuit ("Governor Cuomo calls. . . . dinner at St. Patrick's Cathedral. . . . I call back Judith Krantz"); and is currently developing a controversial 100-acre West Side "Television City" project that is planned to include the world's tallest building. For those who would do likewise, Trump articulates his secrets for success: imagination, persistence, skill at "juggling provisional commitments" (e.g., for land or lease options, bank financing, zoning approval, tax abatement, etc.) and most crucial of all, a true trader's instinct. 135,000 printing; first serial to New York magazine and Vanity Fair; Fortune Book Club main selection; BOMC alternate. (December Copyright 1987 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal This is a fascinating book because it is incredible. At the age of 41, Trump, the son of a Queens, New York, developer of moderate-income apartment houses, presides over a vast real estate empire with assets in the billions. Trump's world is composed of an endless series of deals and ventures, most of them monumentally successful from his point of view. The book is less an autobiography than an hour-by-hour recapitulation of how Trump spends his time plus a few lessons for those who would do the same. Trump seems to be a clever entrepreneur and exhibitionist. There should be requests aplenty for this. A.J. Anderson, G.S.L.I.S., Simmons Coll., BostonCopyright 1988 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Empire-Building 101 (perfect for eager Apprentices) By Christopher Hefele "Trump, who believes that excess can be a virtue, is as American as Manhattan's skyline," wrote George Will in the 1980's. Regardless of whether you think Donald Trump as a symbol of American success, or you think he's an annoying, chest-pounding egomaniac with bad hair, this book will show you what it took for him to build up his empire. The book shows Trump doing what he does best -- boldly making big deals -- during the "greed is good" decade of the 1980's. I found it interesting to see how much of his current empire he had built up before his 40th birthday, and to understand how he pulled off various deals. The majority of the book is a swashbuckling, detailed history of his biggest projects. He talks about all the details, from negotiating with landholders, arguing about zoning with city officials, lining up contractors, interviewing architects, dealing with partners in various projects, negotiating with banks to line up financing, and the like.Trump also devotes a couple chapters to his background. He was the son of a successful developer of rent-controlled & low-income housing in Queens and Brooklyn, NY. He was a mischievous, aggressive kid (he once punched a teacher), and was sent military school during his high-school years. He started college at Fordham in the Bronx, NY, to be close to home, but then then transferred to the Wharton Business School (at the University of Pennsylvania) because he liked its entrepreneurial emphasis. Shortly after college, he worked with his father to buy a troubled apartment complex in Cincinnati, which he fixed it up and sold for a multi-million dollar profit. Hungry for bigger things, he moved to a small studio apartment in Manhattan, and progressed from small deals to bigger ones, from renovating a hotel, to building Trump tower, to building and buying casinos in Atlantic city, along with a many other projects.Besides the stories of his deal-making, Trump gives some tips for aspiring moguls. Although he believes you need a certain innate instinct for negotiating well, he thinks there are some tips everyone can use. For example: when planning deals, one should think big, always have a plan B, keep your options open, and use your advantages as leverage in negotiations. When executing a deal, one must deliver results, control costs, and fight competitors when necessary. Also, promotion of your project is important to get the word out. And finally, of course, Trump says one has to have fun doing all this -- if it's not fun, why do it?Overall, the book was an OK read, and it moved quickly (I read it in about a day). Some reviewers were put off by Trump's bravado (but give me a break -- it's Donald Trump!! what did you expect?). If you can get past the bluster, you can see what it took to assemble his empire. I was inspired to re-read the book because of the success of Trump's new TV show, "The Apprentice," and I don't regret the day or so it took to re-read -- it's light reading & moves very quickly. If you'd like a quick refresher on Trump's rise, as I did, then this book (and some say the best book) should be on your reading list.

He has undoubtedly worked hard for the honor. Trump routinely wakes up at 6AM, at which time he reads the morning papers before arriving to work by 9AM. He'll make anywhere from 50 to 100 phone calls daily, and will hold a dozen or so impromptu 15-minute meetings throughout the day. But Trump's work ethic is only part of the reason why he has come to define the quintessential real estate mogul. Donald Trump provides for our benefit his eleven Trump Cards of success. They include thinking big, protecting the downside, maximizing options, knowing your market, using leverage, enhancing your location, getting the word out through a public relations/marketing campaign, fighting back, delivering the goods, controlling costs, and having fun. Yet even these Trump Cards fail to fully illuminate what it is that makes Trump so successful. A great deal of Trump's success can be traced back to his father who built and sold homes throughout New York City, most prominently in Jamaica Estates. Donald would learn on the job from a young age about managing costs and putting together a working symphony of various real estate professionals. After transferring from Fordham University to the University of Pennsylvania to complete his undergraduate degree in business administration, Donald and his father bought Swifton Village in 1968, a 1200-unit FHA apartment complex in Cincinnati, Ohio. While the scope of a 1200-unit apartment complex may seem unfathomable to many, for Donald it was just the beginning. These formative years convinced Trump to look beyond NYC and take the next progressive step, which for him was to develop commercial real estate in Manhattan and later casinos in Atlantic City. Trump approaches business very straightforwardly. He believes that the art of business can be reduced to the simple formula of buy low sell high. Trump writes, "Much as I like the [Beverly Hill's Hotel] I'm interested in it only if I can get it for a much better price than they're now asking" (12). Trump will walk away from a very good property if the numbers don't match up. Trump makes a point of surrounding himself with the best talent when making these hard decisions. In fact, he attributes much of his success to surrounding himself with the best talent available. Throughout the book Trump writes: "I'm just looking to hire the best talent, wherever I can find it (6) [and] I have a very simple rule when it comes to management: hire the best people from your competitors, pay them more than they were earning and give them bonuses and incentives based on their performance. That's how you build a first-class operation" (220). Simply, there exists no room for second best. In this respect, much can be learned from Trump and applied to our lives. However, there exists another more intangible component of Trump's success that underscores the need for of a heightened sense of intuition. This sense of intuition can be interpreted by many as self-confidence, the experience of feeling comfortable in one's own skin, or going with one's gut. In any event, this feeling transcends many areas of Trump's life, including a pervading sense of justice: "I hate lawsuits and depositions, but the fact is that if you're right, you've got to take a stand, or people will walk all over you (7) [and] You have to be very rough and very tough with most contractors or they'll take the shirt right of your back" (38). A sense of intuition cannot be underscored enough. Trump believes in it so strongly that he writes, "You can take the smartest kid at Wharton, the one who gets straight A's and has a 170 IQ, and if he doesn't have the instincts, he'll never be a successful entrepreneur. Moreover, most people who do have the instincts will never recognize that they do, because they don't have the courage or the good fortune to discover their potential (46)." Trump's remarkable history of deal making should embolden us to apply some of the very same business principles that made Trump so successful to our lives in an effort to discover our own true potential.

I've never been interested in celebrity gossip. All I knew about Trump was that he is a billionaire who had made his fortune in real estate and that he is something of a celebrity. I knew that he has his share of fans and critics, but I was neither of them. In other words, I had no preconceived notions about that man. After reading this book, I formed a positive image of him, but I also acknowledge that I should read something written by his critics to form a balanced opinion. However, what I think about Donald Trump as a person is not all that important because Art of the Deal is not about Donald Trump per se. Those who are looking for Trump's biography or who hope that he will reveal in this book some juicy details about his private life will be disappointed. The Art of the Deal starts with one short chapter about his life, and then it goes on to talk about his various business endeavors. Nor does the book say much about his private life. Not that there is much to talk about. From what I read, he is a workaholic and consummate professional who does not have much in terms of private life.Be also advised that the Art of the Deal came out in 1987. If you want information about what was happening with Donald Trump in the past 26 years, look elsewhere. So just what exactly is this book about? It's about his business projects, as well as his business and life philosophy. Each chapter tells the story of one of his more grandiose projects.I have little interest in business and none whatsoever in real estate, but, nevertheless, I did find the book to be very interesting. I like human stories, and the world of business is full of politics, negotiations, secret deals, conflict and (melo)drama. When a building is being built, I do not care about the architecture or engineering aspects, but I do like to hear about the human stories behind it.Art of the Deal is more than just a book with interesting stories, however. Although not a guidebook per se, by reading it I came time and time again upon certain values that, in my opinion, should be followed not only in business, but life in general.SmartsBefore embarking on a project, think it through. Your instincts might tell you that something is a good investment (or not), but you should still take the time to investigate the pros and the cons. If you get yourself involved in a project that is bad from the beginning, no amount of hard work will make it worth your time.PatienceThings take time. Be patient. Many of Trump's projects took years to complete. Some took years to even start. If embarking on a certain course of action would cost you too much today, wait and check back from time to time. Eventually a better opportunity will present itself.PerseveranceAs soon as you start something, obstacles will appear. Don't give up. Keep up the pressure. Obstacles can be overcome one way or another. If it is people who oppose you, keep fighting. Most people don't have a stomach for a long fight and you can wear them out. Some can be simply outlasted. People move on to other things, get fired, even die. If they were blocking you, whoever replaces them might be easier to deal with.FlexibilityDon't put all your eggs in one basket. Keep your option open and if something does not work out, be prepared to walk away. Do not allow your perseverance to turn into stubbornness. If you mindlessly persist on a certain approach or keep working on a project after it becomes obvious that it's a failure, you are heading towards disaster. At best, you will achieve a Pyrrhic victory. You might eventually succeed, but the waste of time, energy and resources will not make it worth it.IntegrityThis value is perhaps the most important. Respect people around you, keep your word, reward well those who do good job and be loyal. If you stab people in the back, it will cost you in the long run far more than what you will gain in the short run. Once you earn a bad reputation, people will refuse to deal with you, or they will be very weary. They might even stab you in the back, figuring out that you were going to betray them anyway so they might as well strike first. If someone wrongs you or there is a conflict, ask to meet them and listen to their reasons. Make an effort to put yourself in their shoes and try to work out a new solution. Not only you will avoid unnecessary conflicts, but you will impress people by showing compassion and understanding. You will earn the reputation of someone who is easy to get along with.If the other side refuses to talk or offers reasons that you do not agree with, you will have the satisfaction of having tried to work things out. If they refuse your olive branch, provided that it was offered in good faith, the fault is theirs.Being a decent, loyal person does not mean that you allow yourself to be taken advantage of. If someone wrongs you for no good reason, then go after them and punish them. The punishment should fit the crime, but be relentless in pursuing justice, no matter how much it costs you. If you let the matter drop, not only the guilty party gets away (and is free to do the same to others), but you send a message that people can take advantage of you and suffer no consequences.

"Come war and peace Downton still stands and the Crawleys are still in it."

Downton Abbey is loved the world over for its fabulous costumes, beautiful scenery, wonderful characters and intricate plot lines, but what keeps millions of us coming back time after time is the stellar quality of the writing. With each stroke of his pen Julian Fellowes seems to gift us with a cuttingly dry quip from the Dowager Countess, a perfectly timed word of wisdom from Mrs Patmore or a touchingly nostalgic pronouncement from Carson. Here in The Wit and Wisdom of Downton Abbey, Jessica Fellowes has gathered together her favorite quotes from the complete Downton Abbey oeuvre to take each of us back to the most memorable moments from the show and ensure we are armed with the very best ripostes should we ever need to chastise an impertinent lady's maid.

92 of 94 people found the following review helpful. WITTICISMS YES.... BUT ALSO A REMEMBRANCE OF SCENES -- PERHAPS MORE SO By MyD -- The Viewpoint A PRACTICAL REVIEW OF THE VALUE OF THIS BOOK. WHAT IT IS... AND WHAT IT ISN'T QUITEDESCRIPTION: I want to say up front that I love this book and very glad to own it. It is pretty much what I expected and I am not disappointed. I also want to be fair to future purchasers and explain what this book is, and what it isn't quite. The small publication (just under 7 1/2" tall and under 1/2" thick) is a treasure trove of great lines from the movie. There are wonderful lines from all seasons and you can imagine Violet features strongly as she has so many tremendous lines. There are also lines of wisdom as the title describes. But I would suggest the focus of this small book is also like a remembrance of great scenes. Rather than simple one liners from different characters, we get sections of lines from the script where characters interact. Not every entry is particularly prescient or witty, but it does refer us to a wonderful moment or scene. In such a small book, you may not find every single favorite line you expected to be there. But it is still a wonderful keepsake. Among the pages of lines and witticisms are also a few nice photos with more captions. I have included some photos of my own of the book that gives you examples of what to expect.SOME OBSERVATIONS: I don't want this to be a "cons" paragraph because I do love the book. But I do want to give just a few of those observations so prospective buyers know what to expect and expectations can be tempered. We all know this is what some might call "cash grab". But I am not going to call that a negative and the book will contain much of what you expect. That's what is important in the end. It's an inexpensive book if you get the right price (it cost me under $10). As I said, it's a terrific keepsake and the content is worthy. But for the price you shouldn't expect a flashy book. The cover is very no frills and the photos are nice, but not glitzy like a large photo book. If I were to do anything differently, it would only be this: I like the witticisms the most so I would have put even more emphasis on that. I think they also could have done a really classy cover that would exude the opulence of the former age. But to be fair, that would be a much more expensive book and might put some buyers off. I would describe this book as built for enjoyment rather than display, and that is a worthy goal for producing it. I did notice the original retail sticker from publisher leaves a mark on the back no matter what I did.If you love the show and treasure many of the one liners or interaction that make it so memorable, this is a worthy and normally very inexpensive way to relive a bit of those feelings from time to time. Since each entry is very small, you can sit back and enjoy it for just a few moments each time if that's all you wish. I highly recommend it.

16 of 17 people found the following review helpful. From Roget Crawley... By J. Tant Presented in hardcover and bound to last, this is a delightful little book that is sure to replace Roget's in the Downton Abbey fan's house.I appreciate this book because the dialogue of the show is very British, and therefore the phrasing tends to the complex. There's also a dry, almost cynical wit to the show that rewards the careful viewer (and listener). Because of these factors, seeing the words in print enables me to call back to the episode and think about what was going on at the time of the quote. It's a fun, and I daresay intimate way to appreciate the quotes in this book. It almost makes me feel as though the character and I have a shared memory. Silly, I know, because it's just a TV show...but it's an engrossing and well done TV show.Anyway, enough gushing. For the Downton fan this is a good add to the library. I like it a lot.

Ahead of him the sand shimmered with the sunlight that streamed down from the surface some thirty meters overhead, blocked only by the shadow of the dive boat at the edge of his field of vision. For a few moments he hung there, barely breathing, perfectly at one with the sea. When Jack dived he was always seeking the past, in shipwrecks, in sunken ruins, in humble scraps of evidence or fabulous treasures, some of them dating back to the dawn of recorded history. And yet for him the experience of diving was all about the present, about the heightened awareness and rush of adrenaline that came when every breath was precious and your life depended on it. In more than thirty years of diving, he had never lost that feeling, from his first dives as a boy through his academic training as an archaeologist and his time as a navy diver to his years with the International Maritime University on expeditions that spanned the globe. It was the same allure that had drawn men to the sea for millennia, men whose past receded with the shoreline, their future hemmed in by the vagaries of storm and wreck, whose survival could be measured only as far as they could see ahead. For Jack it was intoxicating, his lifeblood. He knew that even if he found nothing this time, the dive would revitalize him, would push him forward to try again, never to give up as long as the past beckoned him to explore its deepest secrets. He stared around him. To his left a cliff rose steeply up the western shore of the gulf, the rock furrowed and worn. To his right the seabed dropped off to the abyss at the center of the gulf; the slope was punctuated by the heads of coral that rose out of the sand like giant mushrooms. He strained his eyes, scanning the seabed: still nothing. And yet his gut feeling told him to carry on, an instinct borne of more than thirty years of underwater exploration in which he had rarely made a bad call and had never given up while the window was still open. For three days now, he and Costas had dived repeatedly along this coast, covering more than a kilometer of seabed, and Jack was determined to use every last second of dive time available to them. The prize that he knew lay somewhere out there was big enough to justify the risk they had taken coming here, and they might never again have a chance like this.A voice crackled in his earphones, the familiar New York accent clear even through the intercom. “Jack. It’s my worst nightmare.”Jack turned, seeing the sparkling veil of exhaust bubbles at the edge of his visibility some thirty meters upslope, exhaled by the diver kneeling on the seabed beneath. Costas Kazantzakis had been Jack’s constant dive companion for almost twenty years now, ever since they had first met and come up with the idea of an institute for exploration and research. Costas had learned virtually everything he knew about archaeology from Jack, who in turn had come to rely on his friend for engineering expertise and general practical know-how. Jack remembered the last time he and Costas had dived together in the Red Sea, almost five years before. Then, they had been seeking a fortune in gold lost in a Roman ship trading out to India. They were following clues in fragments of an ancient merchant’s guide found by their colleague Maurice Hiebermeyer in a desert excavation. Now, five years later, they were again following clues in ancient writing, but instead of a newly discovered text, it was one of the greatest works of literature ever known, its words and verses pored over and memorized by millions. And what was at stake was not just a treasure in artifacts but the truth behind one of the oldest adventure stories ever told, a foundation myth in one of the world’s great religious traditions, yet a tradition that may have been torn apart by an event of unimaginable destruction at this very spot over three thousand years ago.Jack tapped his intercom. “What is it?”“Two sea snakes. Right in front of me, Jack, swaying, working out which bit of my neck to lick. Just like those snake batons from the tomb of Tutankhamun that gave me the jitters in the Cairo Museum. It’s the undead, come back to haunt me for violating the temple we found under the Nile.”“Those weren’t snakes, Costas. They were crocodiles. A temple to the crocodile god, Sobek.”“They’re all friends, right? Crocodile gods, snake gods. Violate one, you violate all of them. Right now I wish I’d never gotten involved with archaeologists.”“Remember our cover, Costas. We’re here to photograph the wildlife. Our dive boat captain’s probably watching us through his glass-bottomed bucket right now. You need to look the part, but just keep your distance.”“Don’t worry. Every great explorer has their phobia, Jack. Mine’s just become sea snakes.”“Yeah, along with, at the last count, rats, skeletons, and anything decayed. Especially mummies.”“Don’t mention mummies, Jack. Just don’t go there.”“That’s why I brought you here, remember? To get away from all that. You’re always at me about wanting more down time, and now you’ve got it. A holiday on the Red Sea, and still you complain.”“Jack, holiday means sun lounger under a parasol, gin and tonics, the occasional splash in the sea, delightful female company. It doesn’t mean another Jack and Costas against-the-clock hunt for some lost archaeological treasure. It doesn’t mean the entire Egyptian security service on our tails, our lives dependent on some dodgy dive boat captain who probably moonlights as a pirate. And just to cap it off, a major war about to start overhead.”“You love it, Costas. Admit it.”“Yeah, right. Like I love being licked by sea snakes.”“How’s your air?”“A hundred bar and counting. Enough for half an hour at my depth, twenty minutes where you are.”“Okay. You see that triple coral head about twenty meters in front of me? At my four o’clock from that, about twenty meters down the slope, there’s a cluster of smaller coral heads I want to look at. There’s something strange about them. That’s as far as we’re going to get on this dive.”“Roger that, Jack. Wait there while I take a picture.”Jack stared, riveted by the scene. For a long time it had been thought that the Red Sea was fatal for sea snakes, it being too saline for them to be able to filter out enough of the salt to make the water drinkable. But reports of sea snakes in the Red Sea had circulated among divers for several months now, and fishermen had brought in several specimens. The captain of the dive boat had spoken of it to Jack the night before, telling him of turbulence he had seen on the surface of the sea at night, patches of disturbed water and phosphorescence that looked like feeding schools of fish but he thought were actually writhing schools of snakes. In the Indian Ocean they were known to rise to the surface to drink freshwater after a rainstorm, and he thought that they had reached the northern limit of their tolerance at the entrance to the Gulf of Suez, where the sea becomes even more saline, and were congregating there in a desperate attempt to find drinkable water. They seemed to be drawn in large numbers to a few places where the water was fresher. Jack had pointed to a desert spring that trickled down the cliff face to the beach at this spot, and he had thought there might be other freshwater upwellings below the seabed near the shoreline.Jack watched Costas reach out and turn the camera on himself and the snakes, and then he pressed his intercom. “You might not want to alarm them. I’d keep the flash off if I were you.”“You know how I feel about snakes, Jack. I’m trying not to shake all over. I just need one selfie to show that I’ve overcome my fear.”“Did you hear what our captain said about the snakes last night?”“I heard the word snake, and then I put on my headphones. I didn’t want any bad dreams on our final night here.”“He said the ones he’s seen are Pelamis platurus, the yellow-bellied sea snake.”“Got it. Black body, yellow belly. They look kind of Egyptian, the sort of thing you’d see swirling around Tutankhamun in his tomb.”“Just don’t get bitten.”“Don’t say that, Jack. I thought sea snakes were pretty passive.”“Not when they’re thirsty. And these snakes might be a little deranged. They shouldn’t really be in the Red Sea, and they’ve swum in the wrong direction if they want to find water that’s less saline. The Gulf of Suez would be a death zone for them.”“Okay, Jack.” Costas slowly withdrew the camera. “Give me the lowdown. You should have warned me earlier.”“I didn’t want to break the spell.”“That’s done.”“Progressive flaccid paralysis, leading to muscle breakdown, renal failure, and death. Get bitten out here, and you’re a goner.”“Great.” Costas sounded distant, and he had gone still in the water. “Any suggestions?”“You remember that spring we saw above the cliff face? The outflow should be coming into the sea just opposite you. If you slowly ascend and the snakes stay with you, they might sense the freshwater and swim toward it, away from you.”“Got it.” Costas slowly reached toward the valve that bled air into his buoyancy compensator. One of the snakes slid under his jacket, came out through the neck opening, and coiled itself around Costas’ hand, hovering over his fingers, its mouth open. Costas had stopped exhaling, and for a moment there was no movement. Jack felt his own breathing lessen, as if he too were worried that the snake might be disrupted by his exhaust bubbles. He watched, his heart pounding, barely believing what might be about to happen. After all they had been through, it seemed absurd that a chance encounter with sea life could put an end to everything, but it was an occupational hazard as dangerous as anything else. He held his breath, staring. A few seconds later the snake slid over Costas’ mask and then uncoiled above him, looking toward the surface, its mouth opening and closing. Costas pressed the valve and slowly began to ascend, his legs motionless, letting the buoyancy do all the work. After about five meters both the snakes uncoiled and swam up toward the surface, rising on the mass of bubbles from Costas’ exhaust. He watched them swim toward shore on the surface, sinuous black shapes silhouetted by the sunlight, and then he bled air from his jacket and swam toward Jack.Jack turned to face ahead, regulating his breathing until he was hanging almost motionless in the water. He thought about what Costas had just said. A war about to start. He stared north along the slope to a rocky promontory that marked the limit of their survey area. Earlier that day an Egyptian navy patrol boat had told the dive boat captain in no uncertain terms that he must not stray into the military zone that lay beyond the promontory. Tensions between Egypt and Israel were higher than they had been for decades, with the Middle East closer to a meltdown than it had been since the Yom Kippur war of 1973. The extremist hold on Iraq had been tightening again; only Iran remained a beacon of stability, ironically courted by the West after years of standoff. To the north of Israel, the true intentions of the extremists who had flocked into Syria during the civil war had become clear, with their attention turning from fighting the regime to sending rockets and suicide bombers across the Israeli border. To the south, the Israelis had watched the political turmoil in Egypt with dismay, as the newly installed Islamist regime was now itself threatened by extremists, a faction whose sympathies lay more with the extremists in Syria and Iraq than with the interests of the Egyptian people. Most worrying, it had become clear that the Egyptian army, in the past a force for moderation, had been infiltrated to the highest level by officers in the extremist camp, a process that had been going on in secret for years.A military coup now would not bring stability as it had done in the past, but it would provide clout for an extremist takeover. And everyone knew that if that happened, the Israelis would have no choice but to act. A war now would not be a lightning conflict as in 1973, brought to heel by superpower intervention, but a prolonged conflict, escalating into surrounding countries, into Libya, Somalia, and Iraq, drawing in Iran and Turkey. Outside powers would lack the strength to mediate a peace, their credibility undermined by the failed interventions in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Syria. The war would start on the eastern frontiers of Egypt, in the skies above them now, and could turn into the cataclysm that everyone watching the Middle East had feared since the end of the cold war: a new kind of world war, one marked not only by a wildfire of conventional conflicts but also by unfettered terrorism, paralyzing the world and bringing fear to people in a way that had not been seen since the threat of a nuclear holocaust two generations before. As if to underline his thoughts, the deep rumble of a low-flying jet coursed through Jack. It was one in a succession of warplanes that had been flying toward the Egyptian border over the past few hours. The captain of the dive boat had been jittery enough without the ultimatum from the patrol vessel, and he was now standing off from their anchorage point with his engine already fired up. Jack and Costas were here anonymously, posing as recreational divers, having chartered the boat with the cover of being photographers. The only way now that Jack could extend their time on-site would be for him to blow their cover and tell the authorities that they were on the cusp of a breakthrough discovery, but to do so would be to court disaster. The new antiquities director in Cairo was a political stooge and had been shutting down foreign excavations in Egypt on a daily basis. A month ago he had been enraged to discover that Jack and Costas had been exploring beneath the pyramids at Giza, had refused their request to clear the underground passage they had found, and had rescinded their permit.Anything Jack tried now would almost certainly result in the International Maritime University being blacklisted in Egypt, his deportation, and the closure of all the remaining IMU projects in the country, as well as threatening Hiebermeyer’s Institute of Archaeology in Alexandria, an affiliate of IMU. At this moment Maurice was working desperately to complete his excavation of the mummy necropolis in the Faiyum oasis, the culmination of a lifelong passion for Egyptology that might still produce astonishing finds. For him, every moment now counted just as it did for Jack, but Hiebermeyer’s entire soul and career were wrapped up in ancient Egypt, and Jack was not willing to risk his friend’s chance of bringing his excavation to some kind of completion. There was no leeway: This dive would be their last one on-site, with the chances of them ever returning overshadowed by the cloud that now hung over the entire Middle East, not just Egypt.Jack closed his eyes for a moment, breathing in slowly and deeply, knowing that each draw on his tank now represented a final countdown to the end of the dive. Over the past few months in Sudan and Egypt, he had pushed the envelope further than he ever had done before, and he had raised more than a few eyebrows among the IMU board of directors. Officially Jack was IMU’s archaeological director and Costas its submersibles expert. When Jack had set up IMU fifteen years before, he had relinquished control to an independent board because he had seen too many institutes wobble under the control of a founding director who had put too many eggs in one basket. IMU projects were now spread around the globe, encompassing oceanography and geology as well as archaeology, and IMU acted as an umbrella for affiliated institutes, including Hiebermeyer’s beside the ancient harbor of Alexandria, on the Mediterranean coast of Egypt. One of the board’s remits was to rein in any project that had become a political flash point, potentially threatening IMU’s reputation and wider activities in the region. Through no fault of his own, Jack had endured the Sudanese authorities terminating his diving in the Upper Nile and had then experienced the barely contained furor over their pyramid exploration, setting him up against the same extremist element that had infiltrated the regimes in both countries. For some days now, Jack had wondered whether it would be the new Egyptian antiquity authorities or the IMU board of directors that would cause his final departure from Egypt. Either way, he knew his time was running perilously short.Jack glanced at his wrist computer. There were still fifteen minutes of dive time left, precious moments in which he could push aside the modern world and focus all his being on the diving. For Jack, no amount of equipment preparation, of preparation of body and mind, of bringing a lifetime of experience to bear could guarantee his ability to see beyond the perimeter of his vision to what might lie ahead. Living for the moment was more than just an intoxication for him; it had become a tool of his trade, sharpening his senses and his acuity of observation, clearing his mind and allowing him to see more in a few moments on the seabed than he could do in hours on land. He stared down the slope and saw the seconds slipping away on his dive computer. He knew he was going to have to bring all that acuity to bear if they were to stand any chance of finding what all his instincts told him lay out there: a revelation that just might shake the foundations of history.

A trip below a Pyramid By Isis Charest Pyramid by David Gibbins is a fast moving book that unfolds some very old and interesting archaeological and biblical information, often more "extra" information than I the reader wanted. The story feels present time, warish, sometimes a lot of arrogance and privilege for stepping outside laws and boundaries to get what is wanted but did keep me reading to the end ... although I did skim numerous parts.

Roseborough Another episode in the on going saga of Jack Howard and his team of seagoing archaeologists. This time they are exploring a possible underground passage that may lead them to hidden chambers buried beneath the sands of Egypt. The country is presently torn by warring factions struggling for control of the government. Meanwhile deep below the waters of the Nile, Howard searches for a submerged passage that may lead to the undiscovered tomb of Akhenaten, the Pharaoh who tried to turn Egypt away from it’s worship of a pantheon of Gods, toward the worship of one, the sun God, Aten. Was this the Pharaoh mentioned in the Bible, who sent his chariot army into the Red Sea, chasing Moses and his people who were fleeing Egypt? Jack may have found an historical connection that would change the annals of written history forever. But first, he will have to brave, sea snakes, revolutionaries, corrupt officials, and many more unknown dangers as he explores the ancient tunnels that protect the secrets of one of the pasts most intriguing Pharaohs. The book has lots of action, good fun, and some interesting speculation attempting to tie up many loose ends of history. The book was provided by LibraryThing for review.
