From SHANI STRUTHERS, the bestselling author of the first in the series, THE HAUNTING OF HIGHDOWN HALL. “This isn’t a ghost we’re dealing with. If only it were that simple…” Eighteen years ago, when psychic Ruby Davis was a child, her mother – also a psychic – suffered a nervous breakdown. Ruby was never told why. “It won’t help you to know,” the only answer ever given. Fast forward to the present and Ruby is earning a living from her gift, running a high street consultancy – Psychic Surveys – specialising in domestic spiritual clearance. Boasting a strong track record, business is booming. Dealing with spirits has become routine but there is more to the paranormal than even Ruby can imagine. Someone – something – stalks her, terrifying but also strangely familiar. Hiding in the shadows, it is fast becoming bolder and the only way to fight it is for the past to be revealed – no matter what the danger. When you can see the light, you can see the darkness too. And sometimes the darkness can see you.

From the Inside Flap Before they got started, Ness explained more about psychic attacks."Dark energies or entities that find their way into physical bodies are often sent without awareness, even though they are sent by humans. Others are sent intentionally to create harm and damage, their purpose to control and manipulate or even punish the individual. If you seriously think the same thing that affected Danny is now affecting you, we can safely assume it's the former, it's been sent to you unintentionally.""Danny was into Crowley, that book he had, those drawings he did," Corinna pointed out. "Clearly he was fascinated by thought forms, demons and the like.""He may well have been into Crowley but that doesn't make him a bad person, just an interested one," Ness replied. To Ruby, she said, "What was your impression of Danny?""Erm, I've met him a couple of times. He's a nice bloke, a bit of a livewire after a few drinks but apart from that, okay. Cash, what about you? You know him better.""He's a good bloke. He's Presley's best friend, not mine and yes, he's a bit wild at times. And just lately, drink's been a problem, but that doesn't make him evil either.""No one's saying that," said Theo. "Despite having died in the 1940s, Crowley still has many devoted disciples and a lot of them genuinely believe him to be an enlightened soul and perhaps he is, it's a matter of opinion. Personally, however, I'm not a fan. And it's important to remember the man was prone to exaggeration, dangerous exaggeration. The thing is if you don't fully understand what you're getting involved with, if you don't have direction or another perspective to balance things out, it's easy to run into trouble, which Danny clearly did. Trouble perhaps exacerbated by the use of mind-altering substances." She paused for a moment before adding wryly, "Trouble that's rubbed off on us.""On me," Ruby corrected. "It's only rubbed off on me. You needn't get involved.""Dear girl," Theo said, smiling gently, "you're not just our colleague, you're our friend and we're going to help you. On that subject, I think you'll find us quite immoveable."Despite the warmth of Theo's words, Ruby still felt cold inside.

By Neppo For a start, this was always going to be a disappointment after Psychic Surveys Book I: The Haunting Of Highdown Hall, simply because you don’t come out with a debut like that and get a follow up with the same power and ‘newness’. But because I read the first one and adored it so much, I have waited for this with a mixture of desperate to read it and not wanting to be disappointed. Fear of “Anticipointment’, I think it’s called. But when it arrived, I put a bookmark in what I was reading so I could begin it immediately. I don’t often do that. When you have characters this strong and alive, reading the first pages is like coming home after a long trip and putting your favourite mooching-around-the-house clothes on. It’s immediate – there is no getting to remember who these people are, it’s instant recognition and the familiar mannerisms and characteristics of each are there like you’ve never been away. I’m beginning to feel my trepidation fading. It’s also difficult to know here this book would go without going over the same territory, but that isn’t a problem either. Here we have a writer that not only has the ability to tell a great story, but to imagine new adventures without repetition, and this book moves on to areas that are much darker than a simple ghost story and a lot more frightening. I think the fear in this book comes mainly from the notion that this stuff isn’t quite as fictional as a simple silly horror story, but is what some of us may suspect is really not to be messed with. It’s a bit real. The prologue even had me remembering being frightened of the dark as a child, and for a writer to be able to plug into the reader instantly at such a personal level on the first page is an extraordinary talent. What is clearly becoming obvious is that Shani Struthers must know about this stuff. In order to research for a book, you need to know what to research, but a lot of this content isn’t common knowledge in the first place which leads me to suspect that the author is a lot more tuned into this subject than just using it as a writing genre. That’s a bit scary too. Googling the subject matter along the way just adds to the depth of this book – and what is astonishing is that this stuff isn’t just made-up fiction. (shiver)The upshot of all this is that this book is unputdownable, the characters even more real, the humor remains intact, the story even more gripping, the tension even higher, the book even better, and the hall light is on all night. So much better in fact (hard to believe, I know), that I now long for the next without any doubts – at all.I read a lot of books, and a lot of it is paranormal, but Shani Struthers has re-written the rule book and set the bar so high that the usual big writers just don’t excite like they used to.I think this is just the beginning of a new chapter of this genre – it’s unique and fresh, it’s brilliant, and the future of paranormal fiction has a new champion.

By Sally Ok when I say this is a five star book I'm lying but only because this book deserves way, way more than five stars, in fact it deserves a galaxy full of stars!I really, really enjoyed the first book in this series and really could not wait to get my hands on this book. For me the first book was perfect and I will admit I wanted desperately to see where the wonderful Ms Struthers was going to take me and I was not disappointed in the least. This story is a rollercoaster ride from the very beginning and a dark one at that. Hell it terrified me in places and yet from the darkness came so much light, not only in the book but in my perception of the words that Ms Struthers imparts. I was truly thrilled to see the wonderful Jed appeared throughout this book as well as all the other characters. Ruby, Cash and the team were magnificent and I found myself being pulled along by them as their story unfolded, almost to the point where I was there with them living the story although thankfully I finished reading this in the daylight otherwise I would have scared myself silly.Ms Struthers truly has surpassed herself with this story and for me she is my Mistress of all things paranormal.I highly recommend reading this series as quite frankly for me it is true perfection.

Business is booming for the Lewes based business Psychic Surveys. Ruby Davis is now firmly established in a relationship with Cash Wilkins and Jed the spirit Labrador is still in evidence.Nightmares and memories begin to haunt Ruby and most pressing of all is what really happened to her psychic mother, Jessica, who had a breakdown. Something is stalking Ruby, something from a sinister otherworldly place. This second book in the Psychic Surveys series, continues to explore the spirit world. It delves further into darkness and negative thought entities generated by human fear. Psychic Surveys are called on to help Danny, a friend of Cash’s brother Presley. Ruby senses a dark presence and they also discover a link to dark occult interests.Pretty soon Ruby realises that Danny’s experience is connected to her nightmares and what happened to her mother. Pretty soon the whole Psychic Surveys team find themselves collectively battling a dark force which has never been human.I love Ms Struthers’ writing. She doesn’t throw psychic jargon at the reader without explanation and she helps you understand the complexities of various kind of spirit through the experiences of her wholly likeable and believable characters.I will definite be looking for more books by this talented author.
