Collins I am always so happy when I chose a debut novel to review and it is a winner right out of the chute. Since this is centered around Billings, MT and the vast ranches I thought I would start with western jargon. :-)Alma, a high powered attorney who is practicing in Seattle is drawn back to her home(Montana) as her sister is found dead. Was it an accident, drug overdose, or killing? Between the pages of some of the most powerful yet elegant writing this mystery unfolds. Cohesively, and not rushed, Carrie La Seur sheds light for the reader, lending them many nuances and some very dark secrets. Introducing just the right amount of characters, the reader can never quite figure out who or what. A passionate romance glides in provoking another caveat to consider. I am loathe to name characters and plots as they all lead to the brilliant ending that had me shaking my head and hoping there might be a sequel. Or not. This is a fantastic stand alone book.I love the images of Montana, the good, bad, and the ugly, but mainly it's scoping beauty. I felt a little Ivan Doig and Kent Haruf in the writing though critics compared her to Wiley Cash one of my favorite new authors.Excellent beginning, Ms. La Seur and I will anxiously await what lies ahead in your bibliography that will be large someday I can feel in it my reading bones.
14 of 17 people found the following review helpful. I really wanted to like this book By knittingmom The Home Place by Carrie La Seur is her debut novel and I truly wanted to like it more than I did. La Seur’s prose is well done and her book is exceptionally atmospheric, unfortunately for me, I did not relate to the main character. Alma Terrebonne left Montana after the death of her parents and planned to never return, that was until her younger sister passed away and she headed home for the funeral. When Carrie returns to Montana she finds a lot more than she bargained for, beginning with the fact her sister’s death may not have been an accident. I did appreciate the small town descriptions, the buried secrets, and the family tensions, however I just could not like Alma. I suggest looking at other reviews before deciding if The Home Place is the book for you.

My issue: The Home Place is presented as a coming home story combined with a mystery, but it is really more a romance novel than anything else. It may be a good romance novel, but that's just not a genre I enjoy.Upon the death of her ner do well sister, Alma Terrebone returns to hometown Billings Montana from Seattle where she's a successful lawyer. The book presents a host of interesting plot possibilities. Was Vicky's death accident or murder? What role did the slimey coal company rep play? How will Alma's ongoing conflict with her sleazy law firm colleagues end? What will happen to niece Brittany and the old homestead where Brittany and Alma take up residence? How will Alma resolve her deepseated love/hate relationship with her hometown? But all of this takes a backseat to Alma's renewed attraction to her highschool sweetheart Chance. She broke his heart once, but maybe he is now the solution to her conflicted life? Far too much of the novel is devoted to their relationship.I don't mind a little romance as part of a good mystery, but this is a little mystery tucked into a romance novel.
