About the Author Varina Denman writes stories about the unique struggles women face. She teaches creative writing and literature, volunteers in her local cooperative, and is a home educator to her five children. She resides with her family in North Texas. This is her first novel.

Outstanding Debut Novel By Varina Denman: Jaded Reads Like A Movie In Your Head By Joseph Courtemanche [Full disclosure: I received a pre-publication copy of this work compliments of the author for review/endorsement purposes.]Varina Denman has an incredible debut novel with Jaded. I was expecting another pleasant Christian love story with some wit and dry humor thrown in, nothing too heavy. I was wrong. This book has such evocative writing that I kept seeing the movie in my head as I read through it this week. Not only did it read like watching a movie, but it was a really good movie. One I would be proud to take my God Daughter to see on a Saturday, and my beloved wife on Sunday. Mom will have to wait for the Monday showing.Set in a small (suffocatingly so in my worldview) Texas town it combines elements of To Kill a Mocking Bird and Cape Fear. I don't know if Varina meant to do that, but I loved the fact that I made the connection: it meant that the story elements were strong enough to bring those very deep emotional links right out in front. When you're compared to iconic authors right out of the chute, you've got the mojo.Characters in this novel are crisply drawn. They are not the stereotypical stuff of romance books. As a matter of fact, while this book started out as a Christian Romance novel, it would be a huge error to place it in that category alone. It's a brilliant novel that is enjoyable reading for all adults. I prefer action-thrillers, but Denman kept me hooked enough that I'd carve out time after work to read each evening. Good stuff. Pacing, plot, and some twists were all excellent and kept me motoring right along.The only downfall of the book is that she writes so well in scenes with food that I had to stop and snack - repeatedly. So far the must have list this week includes chicken fried steak, hot dogs, cotton candy, burgers, and hot chocolate. Thanks a lot for the weight gain!Part of a series of novels, it's set the hook deeply enough that I will buy her future works without reservation. She's really set the bar for debut authors with this one.

This book is a reminder of the damage that can be caused when Christians forget one of the main truths about all of us, "we have all sinned and fall short of the glory of God." Romans 3:23.This book takes a hard look at what happens when a small group of people makes the decision for administering discipline in the church and the consequences that can unfold because of it. Varina does this without being preachy but shows how devastating a harsh decision can be to members of the church. She also touches on the subject of judging someone without knowing all of the facts and she does it by expertly working it into the story line.She is then able to bring the story full circle to show how redeeming love and forgiveness can be. Varina really took her time developing her characters and I really wanted to see what else she had in store for them so I was very happy to see a preview of her sequel novel "Justified" at the end of the book, I can't wait to see where she takes them next and hopefully she'll answer a few lingering questions like, what happened to Clyde Felton's baby?I was given this book for review in an Ebook format from Netgalley. The publisher of this book is David C Cook.

Ruthie’s walk has never been easy. She has lived under the pallor of the town’s judgment for most of her life. She finds it easier to “hide” in the shadows, than to “live” in the light. Her experiences with “God’s Judgment”, rather than His Grace, cause her to be skeptical of those that espouse belief in the God of the church. Until one day, when her world is turned upside down with the arrival of a new family in town. Can she trust these new comers? Can she trust her feelings around them? Can she trust the God they love and serve? Varina Denman weaves this wonderful tale of a hidden dream and desire to be accepted by the town she has called home, all of her life. She brings the readers into the mind and feelings of Ruthie, a young woman, that has been rejected by the congregation of her childhood church and friends. A rejection caused by a supposed sin that was not of her doing. Through the eyes, ears and other senses of Ruthie, Varina brings not only the sights, but sounds and smells of Trapp, Texas alive. She spins a story that will keep the reader enthralled and engaged. As I read, Jaded, I had the great pleasure of walking the streets of the small Texas town. Once I had entered Trapp, I had no desire to leave. The next time you are searching for an escape from your daily grind, pick up a copy of Jaded and travel to Trapp, Texas. I guarantee you won’t be disappointed.
