"All around her the day looked as she might have expected, bright, the sun just skimming through the eastern peaks, the up-and-down song of little yellow-throated birds. In that moment, she understood the nature of her life: an outlier." In 1883, a young Chinese woman is sold by her father to human traffickers and forcibly taken from her family and home in the mountains of Hunan. Facing brutality and deprivation, Ya Zhen must forge within herself a core of strength that will allow her to survive. Her journey ends thousands of miles and a continent away when she’s purchased in San Francisco as an indentured prostitute and taken to Eureka, a rugged and remote area of coastal California. This fledgling outpost—a coarse place filled with lumber mills, brothels, churches, and saloons—is bounded by ocean on one side and heavy redwood forests everywhere else. In Eureka, another woman, Rose Allen, doesn’t quite fit in. Big-hearted, but hard-headed and outspoken, Rose struggles against the prejudices and social expectations of her Victorian neighbors and acquaintances—especially after she falls in love with the Chinese shopkeeper, Bai Lum. When she learns that several Chinese women are kept as virtual slaves at Salyer’s Hotel, Rose joins forces with a small group of friends who are determined to help Ya Zhen escape her grim incarceration. But even as they devise a plan to get her free, a terrible accident precipitates the upheaval of the entire town, and tension mounts as the clock begins ticking for everyone. With a rich cast of unforgettable characters both fictional and historical, Chasing Down the Moon is based on true events that tore a community apart. This gripping historical fiction and literary love story will break your heart, give you reason to hope, and ultimately make you believe in the resilience of the human spirit.

Review "The many heartbreaks of human trafficking and the systematic racism on which many American frontier towns were built form the backdrop of the plot of Carla Baku's well-designed and emotionally charged debut novel. There's a genuine power in Ya Zhen's story, and Baku captures that power mainly through the well-researched believability of her book's setting.A strong and unflinching read." -- The Historical Novel SocietyWhat readers are saying about Chasing Down the Moon:"Gorgeously and bravely renders the power of love to transcend the deep suffering of injustice and hate.""Breathtaking. Glorious. A book that will bring you to tears and keep you up all night." "A beautiful novel of love and conscience. Chasing Down the Moon reminds readers of how fragile life and dreams can be and how taking care of each other is the only way to live.""Historical fiction at its best."

Set in the late nineteenth century, it tells the story of one small California town, Eureka, and how it’s torn apart by racism—the hatred of some white citizens for Chinese immigrants. But in the midst of violence and horrific abuse, there are people of good heart and faith who protect the vulnerable. Rose Allen, Hazel Cleary, Mattie Gillen and Charles and Lucy Huntington are characters to be loved and celebrated. One can only hope that in real life an individual could find the kind of bravery, tenacity and cleverness they possess. Baku gives just as much richness of character to Bai Lum, Li-Lau, and Ya Zhen, who are trying to make a new life despite loss, threats and viciousness. Baku has created a lovely novel, one that deserves to be read, especially now when inequality and mistrust seem so prevalent in modern life. Chasing Down the Moon reminds readers of how fragile life and dreams can be and how taking care of each other is the only way to live.

Highly recommended--reminiscent of the work of Lisa See By gkronik The first thought I had when I started the book is that in terms of theme and subject Carla Baku has put herself in the very good company of bestselling auther Lisa See. Baku's meticulously-researched historical novel is set with equal adeptness in both China and the US, immersing readers fully in both worlds. The book has the exciting pace of a page-turner yet does not sacrifice character to plot. Rose, Ya Zhen, Maddie and company are vivid, complex characters who give us much to think about, and the true events which Baku uses as the book's setting are compelling and often shocking.I was also delighted at the emotional range in the book--in addition to stirring portrayals of tragic or violent events, Baku also has the rare gift of ironic wit. The book has genuinely humorous moments that are never superfluous, but go to character and story. I highly recommend the book, and I'm looking forward to the sequel.

Great Story, But Might be Difficult to Handle By patrick e bates "Chasing Down the Moon" by Carla Baku ... 5-starsI gave this novel five stars because I thought it deserved it, ...for a variety of reasons. Yes, there's a 'but...' involved. I'm not at all sorry that I read this novel, but....I want to caution those of you who might be wondering about reading it; this is not the easiest novel to read. It can be hard on the human spirit, hard on a compassionate person, can be hard on most anyone with a heart. But its not like you're probably thinking. There's a lot more to the novel than just those 'hard' parts.I liked the novel, though I can't say that I "enjoyed" reading it. I'm glad that I read it, and on that thought alone, I can recommend that you read it. But don't say that I didn't caution you about some of the harder parts! Steel your heart, you'll need it.There are parts of the story that are tough for a normal person to handle and keep on reading. And worse, those hard parts are an integral part to the rest of the story ...even the parts that aren't so tough to stomach. There are good parts, there are compassionate people, there are ordinary good people in the story, and those are worth knowing.I want you to read this story, I think you should read it if for no other reason than its a big part of our national history (harsh though it might seem). Read it, but steel yourself, ....and also remember, even after all of the comments above, I still gave it five stars. That must mean something!Patrick
