There are few jobs more rarefied or as physically and mentally demanding as prima ballerina. And yet, despite very real professional risks, three dancers from the world-class San Francisco Ballet all decided to have children at the pinnacle of their careers. In Balancing Acts, photographer Lucy Gray takes readers on an unforgettable fourteen-year journey with these ballerinas, capturing their remarkable grit and determination. In dramatic black-and white photography, Gray documents their struggles to balance the demands of family and work—from their tireless preparation in rehearsals and dazzling mastery of craft displayed on stage, to their time spent relaxing at home with family and even while giving birth. In extensive interviews the dancers and their husbands discuss their stories with great candor, providing remarkable insight into the life of a ballerina and the everyday challenges and joys of mothers everywhere.

Review "Full of beautiful, touching and crazy adorable images." -DanceSpirit.com"In Balancing Acts, Lucy Gray follows three ballerinas over the course of 14 years, as they raise their children while continuing to flourish in their demanding careers. The book is much more than a sentimental celebration. With its intimate photos and illuminating captions, Balancing Acts brings the reader into the nitty-gritty of the ballet world, in which, since the reign of choreographer George Balanchine, female dancers in America have feared that giving birth would end their performing lives." - San Francisco Chronicle"In shimmering black-and-white, the photographs offer a rare behind-the-scenes look at the lives of professional dancers: they depict them not as impossibly graceful pirouetting fairy princesses, as they might appear on stage, but as fully human, responsible for changing diapers like the rest of us." -FastCompany.com"Stunning... Gray's ambitious project (all in all, a fourteen year study) succeeded in lending a sense of universality to a deeply specific subject, proving the possibility of thriving simultaneously in one's career and in motherhood. The message is timely, important, and could not have been expressed with more poignancy than in this striking book." - Elle.com"We love this stunning collection of black and whites because it's so much more than a tribute to three amazing women-it's a model and emblem of hope for every woman who still believes they have a choice to make between success and motherhood. If there is one thing Balancing Acts teaches us, it's that the two often go hand-in-hand." -Bust.com"A fascinating glimpse of the ordinary amidst the extraordinary." - Photographer's Forum"Beautiful." - San Jose Mercury News"From ballet studios and stages to living rooms and delivery rooms, Balancing Acts is an unforgettable visual celebration of family, perseverance, and grace." -Goodreads

About the Author Lucy Gray is an award-winning photographer whose work has been featured in numerous publications, including the New York Times, the Independent, Mother Jones, Dance Magazine, and Salon.com, as well as in exhibitions and projects across the United States

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. This is an amazing book. Actually By Sandy This is an amazing book. Actually, I was a little disappointed by the pictures. I think the cover photo took my breath away and sold me. I wanted more of exhilaration of watching dance and family intertwined so dramatically. However, the photos focus on exploring private, more ruminative, moments -- the dressing room after a show, for instance. However, what I didn't see coming, and value profoundly, are the personal statements provided from the mothers, and their husbands. Remarkably, these statements speak frankly about the challenges of making ends meet, of finding happiness and contentment in one's relationships, of dealing with stress in one's career, of sharing ones home with little people. Truly, the honesty in this book blew me away.

By Stan Washburn The engaging thing about this book is its breadth, from stage to delivery room. Gray had virtually unfettered access to the lives of her subjects, and made fascinating use of it.

Because of a mix up, Neve becomes the pen pal to Rory, a soldier stationed in Afghanistan. Even with the first letter she wrote, you can feel her naughty, sexy, flirty side. When Rory comes home for leave, Neve decides to treat him to one of his fantasies he wrote about in his letters. They have one hot tryst in his parent’s storeroom. Unfortunately, it is interrupted by Mary, his “fiancée” …or is she. Needless to say Neve is angry. In her first letter to Rory, before she decided to get naughty, she asked him if he was one of those “amoral dog types” who would cheat on his girl. Fast forward a year. After their encounter, Rory hasn’t been able to stop thinking about her so after getting out of the Army, he unexpectedly shows up on her door step. When Neve becomes ill, she reluctantly lets Rory stay to take care of her. She knows she has to get her strength back as she has an audition for Cirque de Soleil. This has been her dream. Of course they both have some issues to resolve. Roy has issues with PTSD and Neve has feelings of abandonment by her mother. But together, they help each other work on healing. This is the sort of love story you don’t see too much of today. They actually get to know each other through their letters before engaging in a physical relationship. Nor are they described as this tall, hot, steamy male, nor this curvy, tall, blond bombshell. If fact you feel like they are just normal everyday folks. Overall, this was a sold book, good story-line. Both characters were strong and well developed. It has humor interspersed throughout the book, especially the interaction in the parking lot (no spoilers). I like that there is not a lot of inner turmoil that takes away from the story. This makes the book easy to read and flow quickly and easily. The sex scenes are not that descriptive. I thought the ending was well done. I hope we get stories about Nate and the other McRoy brothers.

You do not have to read the other books in the series to enjoy this one. This book follows Neve and Rory as they start out pen pals and over time, it turns into so much more. Both have baggage that they must deal with and overcome, to have a shot at that elusive happily ever after we all dream about.Neve is a dancer with an unhappy streak with men leaving her looking for love. Unfortunately her bad luck has her always choosing the bad boys. After some soul-searching, she decides to change her life and her luck with men, by enrolling in a military pen pal program.Rory is the happy soldier stationed in Afghanistan paired up with Neve as a pen pal. The beginning letters are fun and romantic as they are getting to know one another. As their letters continue, a friendship forms and things become a bit more intimate and substantial. They tell each other their fears and fantasies as well as their secrets. As they comfort each other with their words, they are growing closer. When Rory comes home on leave, Neve surprises him by coming to see him. He is excited to see Neve in person. Crap hits the fan though, when a girl claiming to be Rory's fiancée finds them in a compromising situation. Neve is devastated that Rory lied to her. She storms off and never talks to him before he ships off. Once Rory is home for good, he's motivated to find Neve and make things right. His world needs her in it. Period. This story was one of mixed feelings for me. I love the beginning and the letters written to each other. They made me laugh and the "ones to be read alone" had me needing a cool drink after! The dual point of views were also a plus as I really like knowing what the characters are thinking and why they did something that they did. I also enjoyed the flashbacks that added to the story but didn't swamp it with too much information. My only beef? Neve and her screwed up way of turning around a situation. Although I don't think Rory was as thoughtful and understanding as he needed to be at times, it was mainly her that drove me crazy! That being said, I still enjoyed the story told. Relationships and happily ever afters are hard work and I am certain that's what the Wendy S. Marcus was striving for in writing All I Need is You.3 stars/2.5 flamesThis book was provided to me by The Jeep Diva for the express purpose of an honest review. The opinions and rating in this review are solely mine and in no way was I compensated.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Loved this One!!! By Christie72 All I Need Is You was another great book by Wendy Marcus! I read the first book in the series and fell in love with the story and the characters, and I felt the same way about this one too! It followed the same premise as the first book, a pen pal program between a soldier and a girl. However, that’s where the similarities ended…the characters are completely different. The book begins with a letter Neve has written Rory. They start off a little innocent and tame, then they become spicy and naughty which Rory loves. As the two begin sharing intimate details of their past and their daily lives, their bond and connection grows. The two meet in person for the first time when he is on leave with a pretty hot hookup, but it ends with Neve running away after a misunderstanding. But, Rory is determined not to lose Neve after she has come to mean so much to him, but will she listen and give him another chance? Both Rory and Neve are complex characters, but Neve has a lot of issues going on…abandonment, trust, just to name a few. With some books, all those things may distract and take away from the story, but not in Marcus’s very talented hands. She explores each issue deeply and with great sensitivity. Because of Neve’s past, she doesn’t always make the best decisions, and she could come across as a character you don’t much like. At times, I wanted to shake her, and ask her why she would do or say certain things, but as I got to know her like Rory did, I saw past the persona she wanted others to see, and saw the real Neve who was sweet, kind, and forgiving. Rory had issues stemming from his time in Afghanistan, and I loved how Neve was able to help him as he helped her. They became a couple I absolutely adored…they saw past each other’s faults and loved one another anyway! There are some twists and secrets that are revealed along the way that greatly affect Neve’s life, but I won’t go into detail…you’ll have to discover those yourselves…but they just add to the story.I love a good military romance, and I love the fact that it goes deeper than just a sexy romance. Marcus does a great job of illustrating what a soldier goes through when they return home. I, myself, appreciate the sacrifice of each man and woman who serves this great country, but I didn’t really realize the trauma that some of them experience and how it affects their lives and the lives of their families. So, thank you, Wendy Marcus, of reminding me of what the word “sacrifice” truly means! I also want to add that you illustrated sacrifice in what Neve did as well concerning her half-brother…it really opened my eyes to that complicated procedure as well. Can’t wait for the next book in the series.***Read and Reviewed for Devilishly Delicious Book Reviews******Copy provided by Net Galley in exchange for an honest review***

The first thing that I must point out is that there really isn’t a perfect genre box to stick Nephilim Prophecy into. Wilder has combined fantasy, paranormal, and touch of romance in this fascinating read. There was a point in Indigo Black’s life when he knew exactly who he was working for and what he was protecting. Since he came into the Church as one of the Palets many things have changed and his beliefs have followed in these changes. The things he is supposed to be protecting innocents from seem to have more power than he does. He is frustrated by the fact that the Covenant that has been put in place ties his hands more than protects the innocent from the Demonic and their evil ways. He has also seen the destruction that punishments can hand down when the lines that are crossed are blurred. Indigo is still suffering the guilt of his Guardian, his Angel, his lover, his Fallen, his Ariel’s punishment for a deed Indigo committed. So many things are black and white for Indigo. He sees good and evil. He sees things as right and wrong. The death of a friend makes him start questioning things more than ever before. Things are not as they appear and with the creation of something that shouldn’t exist, someone that needs protecting, Indigo soon finds himself thrown in the middle of the beginnings of the biggest war Chaos and Serenity will ever face. The future that has been foretold states who will not be the victor of this battle. All of the elements for epically awesome read are here. Good vs evil and the wild card that will change everything ever known. I’m beyond eager to get my hands on the next God Code book. There are so many different directions this series can go and I have no clue which direction it is headed at this point.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. ok By Furio What the author surely manages to do with this short novel, the first instalment in a yet to be published series, is to rely heavily on Judeo-Christian imagery without any religious overtone. This is not necessarily a good thing in itself but it is certainly a feat and it spares the reader unwanted and unnecessary musings about the essence of faith, religion and belief. What she does not manage to do, unfortunately, is to keep narrative tension constantly high. The plot is well thought of; characters are likeable and fairly well rounded, but their inner turmoils sometimes feel in the way instead of adding to their depth; villains are good enough but not unforgettable; action scenes are good but few; sex scenes are many, explicit but lacking in imagination (curiously enough the scenes preceding or following the "deed" are emotionally intense). The end result is a fairly entertaining but by no means memorable read.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Fantastic urban fantasy By Kathleen I think the plot has already been satisfactorily summarized. After reading a second 5-star book (SEVEN) from Adrienne Wilder, I had to go back and write a short review about this talented author's work. What follows is a short snippet from a private message I sent to the author:"I stayed up until nearly 2am finishing the Nephilim Prophesy on Halloween night. Holy wow! Well crafted and well edited. Beautiful, heart wrenching, exciting, heartwarming, unique. As a recovering catholic..., I nearly put it down a few times as I am not fond of 'anything with a religious bent'. But Indigo, Ariel, Neko, and Lucy kept me reading and on the edge of my seat (or rather bed)."It was a completely satisfying romp; I felt like I'd been chased along with our heroes. It is not a Judeo/Christian or other kind tale with religious overtones, but a supremely intelligent urban fantasy. Yes, it has a happy ending.Highly recommended.

"There was never an artist who came close to capturing horror and dread like Lee Brown Coye. He was master of the weird and grotesque illustration. Coye's sketches had the shape of nightmares."—Robert Weinberg, The Weird Tales Story

"It was always my belief that a good drawing was a good drawing, whether it was in the archives of the Metropolitain Museum or in a pulp magazine."— Lee Brown Coye

No other artist working in mid-century pulp fiction created work as twisted as Lee Brown Coye. By the 1970s, after surviving a life-threatening illness, Coye would outdo himself, creating lurid illustrations exclusive to rare privately published books and fanzines. With nearly one hundred gloriously rendered Coye-penned images, Pulp Macabre showcases Coye's final and darkest era, containing some of the most passionately ghoulish artwork ever made.

Mike Hunchback is an enthusiast of various eras of extreme and bizarre underground art, and is currently working on a biography of original Fangoria magazine editor Robert "Uncle Bob" Martin.

Caleb Braaten operates Sacred Bones Records, which has recently teamed with David Lynch to release his new album The Big Dream.

Great Book of Coye's Work By Jack-O-Lantern Any book dedicated to the genius of artist Lee Brown Coye is a good thing, but this one stands above some of the others. Nicely done with lots of Coye's work reproduced. He truly was a master of the weird pulp art movement with an unmistakable style. Love Lee Brown Coye!

By Keith Reimer (oakheart@ibm.net) My copy of this book was accompanied by a dustcase filled with dozens of desk-sized maps covering every phase of the campaign, some focusing on small parts of the action, others broadening out to all of northern Virginia. The author even recommends that you use the maps to follow the text, moving colored pushpins around on the maps as you progress. While I didn't go that far, I must say that this book surpasses any military history that I have read in its integration of map study, broad analysis, and small-unit action. This is an old book, but is a certain classic. The language and writing style are timeless, so don't let that scare you away. I continue to view THE CAMPAIGN OF CHANCELLORSVILLE as the epitomy of what a campaign or battle study should accomplish. If you can find a copy, get it, and enjoy.

By History Buff This book as originally published is indeed a classic, and in my view the best study of the Battle of Chancellorsville that I have ever read. What made it a classic though, was not just its in-depth technical coverage of the battle, but more importantly the incredibly detailed maps that went with each action and movement described. These maps put you into the woods and thickets. There were nearly 50 of them. In previewing the book on-line, i was ecstatic to see one of these maps in the preview, and to see them all of them listed in the index. Well, when I received the book I found that only 3 or four of the original maps are in it. Two others were clearly copied, but with fold out page left in hence making them totally useless. Most just missing or replaced by a blank page. In fairness there was a warning about blurred print and possibly missing pages---I was thinking OK three or four here an there not an issue----but not nearly all the maps???? That should have been said. If all you want is the text just buy one of the 1995 Smithmark Publishers books which can be found on line or in used bookstores for much less than this book. Their title: Chancellorsville by John Bigelow, Jr.---a slight change in title, but all the same text--no missing text pages. My guess, is that unlike this publisher they did not use the exact title, because they did not have the maps and did not wish their version to be confused. The original books are rare, but not that hard to find if one wanted to do a useable reprint with maps. Never imagined so much would be missing. Felt duped. Don't do it.

The BEST study of a single Civil War Battle By A Customer This volume written by John Bigelow is the definitive study of any one battle of the Civil War. It goes in detail of every movement and the time of each. Includes an amazing volume of excellent maps. While reading his text you actually feel that your observing the battle. If there is one book I can recommend to read aboutan actual battle this is it. You come away with a new enlighten reality of what it really was like.

1 of 2 people found the following review helpful. rejection of romantic love by another By Suzanne J. Sellner The Decision actually involved multiple major decisions by several likeable characters. Wanda Brunstetter explored various realistic situations--heartbreaking Alzheimers, Multiple Sclerosis, and widowhood; family obligations; rejection of romantic love by another; and joyous marriage. The reader on the CD did a super job, but I wish she would have paused at crucial points to let the previous section register. She tends to race on into a new topic without giving the listener an opportunity to shift gears in the story line.Overall, it's a well-written story and offers a good "read."
