Losing your eyesight is a frightening thought. Yet, every five seconds someone in the world goes blind. Most causes of visual impairment are caused by age-related diseases such as cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy. Modern medicine has no cure for these conditions. Treatment usually involves managing the symptoms and attempting to slow the progression of the disease. In some cases surgery is an option, but there is always the danger of adverse side effects that can damage the eyes even further. Most chronic progressive eye disorders are considered incurable, hopeless. However, there is a successful treatment. It doesn t involve surgery, drugs, or invasive medical procedures. All that is needed is a proper diet. The key to this diet is coconut, specifically coconut oil. The author used this method to cure is own glaucoma, something standard medical therapy is unable to do. The coconut based dietary program described in this book has the potential to help prevent and treat many common visual problems including the following: cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, dry eye syndrome, Sjogren s syndrome, optic neuritis, irritated eyes, conjunctivitis (pink eye), and eye disorders related to neurodegenerative disease (Alzheimer s, Parkinson s, stroke, MS. Most chronic eye disorders come without warning. No one can tell who will develop a visual handicap as they age. Everybody is at risk. Once the disease is present, treatment is a lifelong process. The best solution is prevention. In this book, you will learn the basic underlying causes for the most common degenerative eye disorders and what you can do to prevent, stop, and even reverse them.

Protect the health of your eyes -- and brain -- with foods that nourish them By Franziska Spritzler Disclosure: I was contacted by the author, who sent me a review copy of this book free of charge. The ability to see is something we usually take for granted until we start having problems. Loss of vision due to cataracts, glaucoma, and macular degeneration becomes more common as we age, but eye problems can develop throughout the life cycle. I've had several eye disorders: bilateral strabismus ("lazy eye") requiring surgery when I was seven, medium myopia (nearsightedness) since around that age, and most recently presbyopia ("old eyes" -- farsightedness after the age of 40). I also have a strong family history of glaucoma, so doing whatever i can to preserve the sight I have is extremely important to me.Dr. Bruce Fife is a naturopath, certified nutritionist, and director of the Coconut Research Center. He's a prolific author, having written 20 books based on his extensive review of the literature on the benefits of coconut oil and its medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs). In his latest book, Stop Vision Loss Now!, he provides evidence that a well-balanced, nutrient-rich, very-low-carbohydrate diet supplemented with coconut oil may help to prevent and even reverse some of the most common eye disorders associated with aging. The major concept of the book is that the eyes are an extension of the brain, so whatever keeps the brain healthy and well nourished will do the same for the eyes. There's a growing body of research demonstrating that maintaining blood glucose and insulin levels as close to normal as possible can help preserve brain function and reduce the risk for Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia. According to Dr. Fife, many researchers now believe that although increased intraocular pressure is involved in glaucoma, its primary cause is that nerve cells within the brain become damaged, similar to what happens in Parkinson's and Alzheimer's disease. He explains that coconut oil increases brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a gene that stimulates the growth, maintenance, and repair of these nerve cells.. Dr. Fife suggests that the increase in ketone levels that occurs in response to MCT can protect eye health and improve or potentially reverse degenerative eye disorders as a result of increased BDNF. In addition to age-related conditions like glaucoma, cataracts, macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy, coconut oil can also be used for dry eyes, eye infections, and other non-vision-limiting conditions.*In addition to generous amounts of healthy fats and moderate amounts of protein, Dr. Fife recommends including a wide variety of nonstarchy vegetables and berries to reduce oxidative stress that can lead to eye disease. He advises selecting from three different levels of carbohydrate intake based on blood glucose levels and provides a sample menu for a typical day, along with guidance on meal planning and dining out. Lists of protective low-carbohydrate foods and a comprehensive net carb counter are included. I agree with his suggestion to add coconut oil slowly, one tablespoon per day to start, in order to prevent GI symptoms and determine personal tolerance.I learned several things I didn't know as a result of reading this book, including:Adding coconut oil to vegetables improves absorption of their nutrients more than any other fat and does the best job of preserving the antioxidants they containAerobic exercise is the most beneficial type of activity for increasing BDNF in the retinaTopical application of coconut water may improve cataractsI found Stop Vision Loss Now! very well-researched, comprehensive, and interesting. Dr. Fife has a gift for making advanced nutrition concepts and physiological processes easy for the average reader with an interest in health to understand. It was truly a pleasure read for me. There are many personal accounts throughout the book, including the author's story of how he reversed his own early-stage glaucoma. Although there isn't a lot of published research on the benefits of coconut oil for eye disorders, he makes a great case for including it as part of a whole-foods-based, low-carbohydrate diet in Stop Vision Loss Now!*Regardless of whether these changes in diet and lifestyle improve your vision, if you have an eye disorder, you should continue to see your ophthalmologist at least once a year for monitoring.

Going blind is the second largest fear of the elderly, the first is death. So it is with that said that we should all care more about eye health. I know many elderly relatives who would be blind if it wasn't for modern medicine. Most had cataracts which caused near blindness.Reading Bruce Fife's new book on eye health gives you quite the education. This book presents the underlying reasons for various eye conditions. By reading this book and following the advice you can help to prevent degenerative problems that happen as we all age. You may have thought glaucoma was irreversible but this author says it isn't. He healed his glaucoma by eating coconut oil.I always learn a lot while reading a Bruce Fife book and this book is about a lot more than coconut oil. This book teaches you about a ketogenic diet. There is also some information on how coconut oil raises blood ketones. This book also promotes a low-carb diet. Although I think avoiding all sugars is near impossible in our modern age. I have tried to completely stop eating all sugars and have only somewhat succeeded. I can't see totally avoiding everything sweet on a long-term basis. Maybe some people can but they have stronger wills than mine. To me life without something sweet once in a while is not a life worth living. There is some information on fasting in this book but I'd highly recommend reading way more books on the subject before you try it. Fasting is not something you want to mess with if you don't have all the facts. You need specific instructions for how to go on and off fasts. So be cautious. So really this book is about preventing, stopping and reversing eye diseases. It is well worth reading and I'm glad I spent the time learning more about how to preserve my sight.~The Rebecca ReviewI received one free book for review purposes. This review is my honest opinion.

"Stop Vision Loss Now!" contains some very useful insights that I now use. OTOH, it isn't perfect. While I use coconut oil every day, other aspects of his ketogenic diet leave me cold. I doubt if anybody anywhere follows a strict ketogenic lifestyle long-term, excepting maybe a castaway. In fairness to Dr. Fife, he does point out different aspects of a ketogenic lifestyle that many people *can* embrace and still reap a benefit.

Set in a small coal-mining town, a debut novel full of secrets, love, betrayal, and suspicious accidents, where Catholicism casts a long shadow and two courageous women make choices that will challenge our own moral convictions One morning in Verra, a town nestled into the hillsides of West Virginia, the young Myrthen Bergmann is playing tug-of-war with her twin, when her sister is killed. Unable to accept her own guilt, Myrthen excludes herself from all forms of friendship and affection and begins a twisted, haunted life dedicated to God. Meanwhile, her neighbor Alta Krol longs to be an artist even as her days are taken up caring for her widowed father and siblings. Everything changes when Myrthen marries the man Alta loves. Fourteen years later, we meet Lidia, a teenage girl in the same town, and her precocious son, Gabriel. When Gabriel starts telling eerily prescient stories that hint at Verra’s long-buried secrets, it’s not long before the townspeople begin to suspect that the boy harbors evil spirits—an irresistible state of affairs for Myrthen and her obsession with salvation.

Whisper Hollow, by Chris Cander

Review From Kirkus Reviews (STARRED REVIEW)“Cander divinely delves into multiple points of view, crafting a collage of vibrant, layered characters while charting six decades of poignant, precise moments. A distinctive novel that sublimely measures the distressed though determined heartbeat of a small mountain community.”From Publishers Weekly“[Whisper Hollow] is inextricably rooted in West Virginia coal country—the rough locale that determines and intertwines [Cander’s] characters’ fates…Cander closely tracks how Myrthen’s and Alta’s romantic decisions unknowingly complicate each other’s lives in the lead-up to a tragic incident that bisects the novel…[and] admirably captures the lack of choice that men and women have in rural West Virginia.”From Booklist“Cander superbly envisions the town, its residents’ dynamics, and the early twentieth-century immigrant experience…[and] rewards the reader with…well-developed, believable characters whose mental fortitude and capacity to love linger in the reader’s mind long after the last page.”~Charles Baxter, author of There’s Something I Want You to Do: Stories“Like D. H. Lawrence’s Sons and Lovers, Chris Cander’s beautiful novel, Whisper Hollow, is about love that finds its object, and love that misses its mark and becomes destructive, in a community of coal miners. The story’s locale is one where love (for God, or others) is blocked or displaced until that moment when it can finally express itself, in a setting where work itself may be deadly and time may always run out. Chris Cander’s understanding of men and women is profound, and the scenes in this wonderful book will stay with you like a visionary experience.”~Ann-Marie MacDonald, author of Adult Onset“With memorable characters and a haunting setting, Chris Cander weaves a compelling tale of the transformative power of love in the face of buried truths that threaten literally to explode.” ~Jamie Ford, author of Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet“Sometimes fiction is so good, so authentic, and the storyteller so convincing, that it just feels true. Whisper Hollow is one of those books. I’m blown away, honestly. Chris Cander has created characters with immortal souls.”~Peter Geye, author of The Lighthouse Road“The men in Chris Cander’s Whisper Hollow toil underground, in the dark and dangerous coal mines of West Virginia. But her women mine territory twice as dark and twice as dangerous, they mine the human heart. Love and loss, devotion and longing, hope and despair, Cander renders all of this and more through the lives of three women spanning more than fifty years. Here is a novel so full of life—of its beauty and cruelty—that I emerged from it like one of those men walking from mines she so wonderfully evokes, like a man walking from the darkness into the light.”~Marie Manilla, author of The Patron Saint of Ugly “Whisper Hollow is a haunting novel about the malleability of memory, about secrets and trickery, and about saints who are sinners and sinners who are saints. Cander paints a colorful portrait of a multi-ethnic, multi-generational West Virginia coal camp: a heaven of opportunity to some, a hell of stunted choices to others.”

Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. Myrthen looked down, seeing only what the lightning allowed—her mother, rocking her limp twin. She looked like she did when Ruth couldn’t fall easily asleep. Outside, the thunder gnashed and roared. Ruth was scared of thunder. Yes, she didn’t like the thunder or the rain or the dark. Mama was comforting her because she was scared, and she should go down and get her doll and give it to Ruth because it would make her feel better, wouldn’t it Ruth? It was so dark outside, shepherds take warning, it was probably almost bedtime and she wasn’t hungry so she must have eaten and it was probably time to go to sleep.             “Mama, I’ll get our bed ready,” Myrthen called quietly down to her mother, who was still rocking, rocking with knees bleeding into the spill of blood where Ruth had fallen. Ruth looked so tired, they were both so very very tired, and Myrthen thought she should go and get their bed ready before it was past their bedtime and she heard the door begin to open—Papa’s home—and she didn’t want to be caught up late, it was so dark and Ruth was already fast asleep, so she ran, quickly, quietly to their room and pulled back the covers and climbed inside, and moved all the way to the wall so that Ruth would have enough room when her mother brought her sleeping body in.             She closed her eyes and promised God that when her mother finished her doll that night after the canning was done, she would give it and all the buttons to Ruthie.

Small town secrets By knittingmom Whisper Hollow by Chris Cander is a beautifully executed, yet mournful and complex book based on the secrets buried deep in the small coal-mining town of Verra, West Virginia. Cander has woven together two separate stories spaced approximately fourteen years apart, which intertwine to create a stunning novel. The story unfold with the death of Myrthen Bergmann’s twin, unable to deal with the death of her twin sister, Myrthen spirals down a rabbit whole of twisted spiritual beliefs, excluding herself from society. Along the same time Myrthren’s neighbor Alta Krol is busy caring for her widowed father and siblings, whilst longing to become an artist, and then Myrthen does the unexpected, altering lives forever. The next section begins fourteen years later with teenage Lidia and her son Gabriel, who suddenly starts discussing prescient stories about Verra’s long buried secrets, and superstition and the need for redemption are soon to follow. Whisper Hollow is a beautifully complex story, brilliantly written, atmospheric, and a difficult book to review without revealing spoilers. Cander has crafted characters that are extremely relatable and each section the reader is drawn into the story lines and this reader found the book impossible to set down. Prior to Reading Whisper Hollow I read the synopsis and was worried it would be a religious book or preachy, I am glad I set those concerns aside, as they were unfounded, and instead I discovered a fantastic mystery suspense and a new author. I would recommend Whisper Hollow to all who enjoy well-written suspense thrillers and mysteries surrounding small towns and especially to those in book discussion groups.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. "It Was All Part of God's Plan ..." ... By delicateflower152 A haunting, sometimes disturbing novel that spans six decades, "Whisper Hollow" highlights the impact of self-recrimination, of obsession, and of isolation. It is also a novel addressing the immigrant experience and the multi-ethnic composition of the coalminers' workforce as those individuals and their descendants assimilate into society. Chris Chander has given readers a thought provoking, engaging novel and compelling characters, some of whom are sympathetic while others can be mean-spirited and hypocritical.Set in Verra, a town in the coal-mining region of West Virginia, "Whisper Hollow" begins in 1916 as German immigrant Rachel Engel Bergmann and her twin daughters Ruth and Myrthen go about their daily routine. A tragic accident near the day of the twin's sixth birthday results in Ruth's death. Its impact on Myrthen and the silence of her mother who blames Myrthen for the death of her favorite twin, will affect the remainder of Myrthen's life and the lives of others.Yet Myrthen takes "comfort" in her faith "...Even if my mother and father forsake me, the Lord will take me in ..." Through the following years, Myrthen's fanatic obsession with religion, the frantic seeking after a calling and a vocation will affect not only her husband, John Esposito, but also Alta Krol Pulaski and her family. Ironically when seeking assistance in furthering her desire to become a nun, she tells a cousin "...Sometimes there is evil inside people that you can't see ..." Even the younger generation, Lidia and Danny Pollack, along with their son Gabriel, will feel the effect of Myrthen's obsession and fanatic beliefs.Characterization is quite strong; personalities develop throughout the story and individuals mature and grow in their understanding of others. Tension builds as Myrthen sinks more and more deeply into a self-imposed separation from normal social interaction. Her final act fills the reader with apprehension as it moves toward the consequences that will affect others. Chris Chander has realistically portrayed the experience of immigrant coal miners, of their families, their attitudes toward the church and the morals of themselves and others, as well as the hopes and fears of and the dangers each one faced. Balancing the mining-town setting with the larger environment and world events, Chris Chander sets the tone for "Whisper Hollow" and this haunting story. If you value excellent writing and character development, you may enjoy "Whisper Hollow".

5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. The Secret Keepers By E.M. Bristol Almost everyone in "Whisper Hollow" by Chris Cander is hiding something. Either that, or they tend to suspect that something is not on the level with their family and friends. They also tend to be nursing private dreams, which they suspect are impossible to ever fully realize, as it would mean leaving Whisper Hollow. The book's setting is a West Virginian coal mining town, whose residents rarely wind up venturing out into the wider world, and the story of its people is chronicled from 1916 to 1969, from the arrival of German immigrants, the grandparents of Myrthen (a main character) to the Vietnam-era. The tragedy that sets off the chain of events comes when Myrthen's twin dies as a young child in a freak accident - or is it? After that, Myrthen loses interest in worldly matters, and eventually, due to the influence of a Church leader becomes devoted to the possibility of being a Carmelite nun once she reaches the designated age, hoping to reclaim some sort of sisterhood. However, her personality will prove unsuitable, and despite her best efforts, she will be constantly thwarted in her goal. Meanwhile, a young woman named Alta, who has aspirations as an artist but who is restricted by having to care for her father and siblings, is growing up, and then dealing with a marriage to a pleasant, but rather dull man, with whom she has a son. Alta eventually seeks diversion with a more understanding man, but her happiness is destined to be short-lived. The two woman's worlds will become intertwined when Myrthen's excessive religious fervor results in a town-wide disaster. The story then jumps ahead in time to fifties, where a teen named Lidia will - you guessed it - unwillingly become the keeper of an ugly secret, and when she has a family of her own, her child, who the townspeople believe possesses second sight, will wind up colliding with Myrthen and bringing long buried truths to light as a result. When I was reading this, I was reminded of the movie "October Sky," based on a memoir by Homer Hickham, which took place in the same era and a similar setting, and coincidentally, the author mentions him as an influence in the afterword. The author may not have grown up in a mining town as she mentions, but she has done an excellent job bringing her setting and its characters to life. The characters are far from perfect - and if you prefer books where someone does not get away (literally or otherwise) with inflicting great harm on innocent others, the end of this book may leave you unsatisfied, but overall, it is an absorbing read.

He and his boss think there must be more to the story than the outward appearance of these people. He stays at the Bed and Breakfast run by Alexa Zimmerman. She's not Old Order Mennonite but she lives plain since her extended family, the Zimmerman's are. Both Briley and Alexa have issues from the past that haunt them. Briley was abandoned at 5 and raised in foster homes. Alexa was abandoned as an infant and raised by Suzy Zimmerman. Also featured in the story are Steven Brungardt and Anna-Grace Braun who are "published" to be married. Steven has inherited a farm in Arborville from his deceased grandfather. Steven doesn't want to be a farmer, he wants to be a teacher but he doesn't want to disappoint his parents and Anna-Grace. Anna-Grace isn't sure she wants to go to Arborville either because she has discovered that her birth parents are from there. She doesn't want to know who they are but she doesn't want to run into them either. This story is a continuation of When Mercy Rains and this book is number 2 in the Zimmerman Restoration series. Book 1 deals with Suzy Zimmerman's return to her family with the daughter she raised (Alexa) and seeing for the first time since birth her own illegitimate daughter that had been adopted by a cousin.Time out! I need to grumble at the author a little: Mrs. Sawyer, you left us hanging on Suzy at the end of book one. Now at the end of book two you leave us hanging on Suzy, Alexa AND Anna-Grace. Book 3 (since this is a trilogy) better be Faith Restored or some such and resolve all three of these. They are all begging for resolution.Just so you know, that rant above was in fun. I love Kim Vogel Sawyer. She is arguably my FAVORITE of all favorite authors. She provided this book to me in exchange for a fair and honest review. I would have snarfed it up anyway because I've been waiting (impatiently) for this next installment in the story. Please speed-write book number 3, Mrs. Sawyer.

By Bobbi Graffunder "When Grace Sings" picks up where "When Mercy Rains" left us. This second book in the series continues the modern-day story of the Zimmerman Family and Alexa finds herself at the start of a new chapter in her life....working to make her dreams of being a successful business woman and member of the Zimmerman family a reality. When a mysterious "outsider" and distant relatives come to stay at her B&B, the security and stability Alexa thought she had found gets put to the test.Kim Sawyer has a gift of words....a way of drawing you into the story and allowing you to walk beside her characters as their lives unfold. As I read, I found myself seeing bits and pieces of my own life story in each of the characters. What compelled me most of all was the fact that I saw pieces of both who I am and who I want to be. Though the world of Old Order Amish and Mennonites is far-removed from my middle-American lifestyle, this book shows us that some human experiences transcend religious and cultural differences: the desire to belong, the longing to please those we love, the struggle of finding out what we want to do with our lives, and the intricate ways that our decisions impact us and those around us.Above all, this truly is a story of grace....for "grace is the face love wears when it meets imperfection" (John Lynch).

By Alison Phillips I was so happy to find a new book to read during this busy time that would make me appreciate the calmer life. I didn't read a lot of details about the new book but it sounded really interesting so I requested a copy through Blogging for Books. When Grace Sings: A Novel (The Zimmerman Restoration Trilogy)by Kim Vogel Sawyer was the second book in the series but I figured that if it was really interesting then I would check out other books by the same author. The even better news came when they sent me the copy of the first book too!! It was a great excitement when I put two and two together (meaning the two books) and figured out that I got two books in the same series. Now here is hoping the third one comes out soon!!!!When trouble roars into quiet Arborville, Alexa and Anna-Grace find themselves the target for discord and exposed secrets. Can they continue to seek the God of all grace amidst the fog of confusion?Alexa Zimmerman wonders if the Old Order Mennonite community in Arborville, Kansas will ever fully accept her. Her family roots here aren’t what anyone thought when she first arrived, but she is hopeful that her culinary and hospitality skills will win the skeptics over. The bed-and-breakfast she’s operating needs to succeed so Alexa agrees to allow Briley Forrester, the hotshot reporter from Chicago, to stay as a long-term boarder not knowing his real motives for being amongst the Plain folk. But when Alexa agrees to host her cousin Anna-Grace Braun, the presence of extended family brings out Alexa’s insecurities and sets Briley on the trail to uncovering a web of hidden truths. Plans for a secure future and the sweetness of young romance hang in the balance when Alexa and Anna-Grace have to face that their secrets are interconnected, binding the two in ways they could not have imagined. Pick up the book to find out what happens because I think that you will be surprise!!I was a little sad when this book was over and that was mainly because I didn't have the next one in the series yet. I can't believe that there is only going to be one more because I know that I am going to need a lot more of these characters after reading the first two books in the series. I enjoyed every minute of it and had trouble putting it down just like the last one. I love the mix of the real world with the shelter Mennonite world that mix in these books. It is great to see that this is the life that people have now and that the different choices that you make in the "real" world don't seem nearly as important when you see the choices that the Mennonites make. Many people know that I choose to be frugal and use our money to make the best choices for our family. I know that many times I feel some of the decisions that I make are a little extreme but I had a conversation over dinner the other night with family members that I had three cars in all my time driving (my first car only for a week before it was totalled and both others keeping for over 10 years) and my husband four (counting one he paid his parents for when he was really young). This family member had over 40 cars in their lifetime and he was not much older then we were with 7 cars between us. The flashy car that the reporter drove in this book made me think about those decisions and how we need to make the decision to pick out the best for our families and not what others expect of us. I hope that this book helps you stop and take a look at your life and the decisions that you make. Pick it up at your local library or bookstore soon!!!** I was given a copy of this book from Blogging for Books for my honest opinion and review. All opinion here are my own.

In the first of a brand-new series set in Victorian England, a young woman returns home from India after the death of her family to discover her identity and inheritance are challenged by the man who holds her future in his hands.Rebecca Ravenshaw, daughter of missionaries, spent most of her life in India. Following the death of her family in the Indian Mutiny, Rebecca returns to claim her family estate in Hampshire, England. Upon her return, people are surprised to see her...and highly suspicious. Less than a year earlier, an imposter had arrived with an Indian servant and assumed not only Rebecca's name, but her home and incomes. That pretender died within months of her arrival; the servant fled to London as the young woman was hastily buried at midnight. The locals believe that perhaps she, Rebecca, is the real imposter. Her home and her father's investments reverted to a distant relative, the darkly charming Captain Luke Whitfield, who quickly took over. Against her best intentions, Rebecca begins to fall in love with Luke, but she is forced to question his motives—does he love her or does he just want Headbourne House? If Luke is simply after the property, as everyone suspects, will she suffer a similar fate as the first “Rebecca”? A captivating Gothic love story set against a backdrop of intrigue and danger, Mist of Midnight will leave you breathless.

I have enjoyed everything she has written, from the French Twist Series to the Ladies in Waiting books. There is a different flavor to each series, but Sandra brings the same passion and zest to every story she undertakes and I love it. I was really looking forward to reading Mist.To be honest, I was a bit apprehensive when I started the book, because it was SO different from what I am used to reading, and really, from anything that is out there right now. I honestly couldn't decide if I liked it or not.But I couldn't stop reading. And the deeper I got into the story, the more I began to find the rythym and flow of the words. I found the flavor of the story- and I remembered other books I enjoyed with a similar feel.Mist of Midnight is mysterious without being dark. There are clues dropped along the way for you to discover, but they leave you with more questions than answers. I did feel the ending was a bit rushed, with the truth finally being told almost at the last moment. Mist really reminded me of Bleak House by Dickens- as a reader you know more is going on, but what is truth? And who is telling it? These questions keep the pages turning. I loved the details about India- and the way Sandra tied the two worlds together.Mist of Midnight is different. But it's a kind of different that is needed in a market filled with so much of the same. I enjoyed the book, and the reminder of books-gone-by that it stirred in me.I recommend for fans of Jane Eyre & Victoria Holt books.

This novel is the first one in Sandra Byrd's new series Daughters of Hampshire. It's a real page turner, it kept me sitting at the edge of my seat until the last pages. If I could resume it in three words, they would be betrayal, trust and love. Ms. Byrd, slowly built up the suspense to keep my interest! I loved her main characters Rebecca and Luke! The story starts as, a young woman returns home from India after the death of her family to discover her identity and inheritance are challenged by the man who holds her future in his hands. Rebecca Ravenshaw, daughter of missionaries, spent most of her life in India and is returning home only to find out that Captain Luke Whitfield is residing there. She, now, has to prove her identity to everyone to be able to fully access her heritage. Will she be able to trust Luke? Is he the man he pretends to be? Who has betrayed her and her family? Who was the imposter? Will she find out the truth? Will love be in the air for these two strangers? This story is set in Victorian England! I really enjoyed this captivating Gothic suspense! Sandra Byrd was a new author for me, but, now, after having read Mist of Midnight, I will surely watch for her next book! To be released on March 10th. I received a free copy from NetGalley and Howard Books, in exchange for an honest review.

Mist of Midnight By Erin Davies Author Sandra Byrd has been in my tbr for a while and though I own two of her earlier novels, Mist of Midnight marks my first taste of her work and I'm happy to report I found the experience quite enjoyable.First and foremost, I really liked how Byrd used identity theft in the context of this story. I'm used to seeing 19th century murder mysteries and I thought impersonation a fun and refreshing departure from that norm. The pacing was a little slow for me personally and I predicted the ending long before the final page, but I liked how Byrd cast suspicion on multiple characters and how she played with ambiguity over the course of narrative.Mist of Midnight is marketed as Christian lit, but Byrd's religious themes are subtle at best and she never allows faith to overwhelm the story. She's not at all preachy and that really appealed to me as a reader. I was also drawn to the blend of culture she incorporated in the fabric of the novel and the contrast she illustrated between Rebecca's life in India and her efforts to find her place in England.Though set in different eras, I think Mist of Midnight makes a nice companion to The Masque of a Murderer by Susanna Calkins and would easily recommend its author alongside Julie Klassen and Roseanna M. White.

From the internationally bestselling author of Nefertiti and Cleopatra’s Daughter comes the breathtaking story of Queen Lakshmi—India’s Joan of Arc—who against all odds defied the mighty British invasion to defend her beloved kingdom. When the British Empire sets its sights on India in the mid-nineteenth century, it expects a quick and easy conquest. India is fractured and divided into kingdoms, each independent and wary of one another, seemingly no match for the might of the English. But when they arrive in the Kingdom of Jhansi, the British army is met with a surprising challenge. Instead of surrendering, Queen Lakshmi raises two armies—one male and one female—and rides into battle, determined to protect her country and her people. Although her soldiers may not appear at first to be formidable against superior British weaponry and training, Lakshmi refuses to back down from the empire determined to take away the land she loves. Told from the unexpected perspective of Sita—Queen Lakshmi’s most favored companion and most trusted soldier in the all-female army—Rebel Queen shines a light on a time and place rarely explored in historical fiction. In the tradition of her bestselling novel, Nefertiti, and through her strong, independent heroines fighting to make their way in a male dominated world, Michelle Moran brings nineteenth-century India to rich, vibrant life.

Rebel Queen: A Novel, by Michelle Moran

Review “I could not put this book down! Sita’s voice as narrator is a strong one, and the time and characters fascinating. Moran’s evocative writing transports the reader from small backcountry villages where women live out their lives in purdah to the exotic kingdom of Jhansi whose women freely walk the streets, and finally to the eye of the hurricane as British authority in Jhansi increases. . . . A riveting and addictive glimpse of that era.” (Historical Novel Review)"This often deeply moving novel focuses on its characters, allowing history to play out as a backdrop to the personal story of a young woman who would risk everything, including her own life, for her people." (Booklist)"Filled with fascinating historical details about a subject that is not often portrayed, the novel looks at both the rights of women and the conflict between the British Empire and India in a fairly unbiased way....Readers who have enjoyed Moran's previous works will not want to miss this." (Library Journal (starred review))"Stunning in form, theme, and plot... Don’t hesitate to purchase this beautifully written gem, which is certain to shoot to the top of the charts, if not start a craze for 'everything Moran.'" (Library Journal, on The Second Empress)"Moran expertly balances fact and fiction . . . . Intimate and entertaining." (Associated Press, on Madame Tussaud)"Certain to be a breakout book for Moran, this superbly written and plotted work is a welcome addition to historical fiction collections. The shocking actions and behavior required of Tussaud to survive the revolution make the novel a true page-turner and a perfect reading group choice." (Library Journal (starred review), on Madame Tussaud)"Dramatic, engrossing, and beautifully written, this is essential reading, and Moran is definitely an author to watch." (Library Journal (starred review), on Cleopatra's Daughter)"Moran skillfully weaves into her latest book plenty of political history and detail without ever weighing down the story, which is fast-paced, intriguing, and beautifully written....A subplot about a mysterious 'Red Eagle' who is trying to incite a slave rebellion is riveting....In Cleopatra's Daughter, she once again demonstrates her talent for taking long-forgotten historical figures and bringing them vividly to life." (Boston Globe, on Cleopatra's Daughter)"Historical fiction enthusiasts will delight in this solid installment from a talented name in the genre." (Publishers Weekly, on Cleopatra's Daughter)"A solidly researched history lesson ... The book is a satisfying blend of romance, intrigue and fascinating historical fact. Cleopatra’s daughter may not share her mother’s renown, but Selene’s own life story is also worth surviving through the centuries." (Chicago Sun-Times, on Cleopatra's Daughter)"The tale brims over with rich details of Roman life, historical personages and political turmoil. Add the coming-of-age aspect and you have a novel that will appeal to readers on many levels." (Romantic Times Book Review, on Cleopatra's Daughter)"It's all here: palace intrigue, politics, romance, warfare, and religion. As beautifully written and engrossing as her first novel, this should enjoy wide readership. Recommended for all popular fiction collections." (Library Journal (starred review), on The Heretic Queen)"Moran's careful attention to detail and her artful storytelling skills bring these people – pharaohs, princesses, and queens; petitioners, servants, and soldiers – to vivid life, imbuing ancient history with suspense and urgency." (Boston Globe, on The Heretic Queen)"Almost every character in the book is based on a historical figure, and Moran fleshes out their personalities beautifully, highlighting the teenage pharaoh's arrogance and paranoia, underscoring his queen's ambition and insecurity....Inspired by the distinctive bust of Nefertiti at the Altes Museum, in Berlin, Moran has created an engrossing tribute to one of the most powerful and alluring women in history." (Boston Globe, on Nefertiti)"Mutnodjmet as narrator is a stroke of genius. . . . Beautifully written and completely engrossing, this first novel should enjoy wide readership." (Library Journal (Editor's Pick of the Week), on Nefertiti)"Nefertiti is a fascinating window into the past, a heroic story with a very human heart. Compulsively readable!" (Diana Gabaldon, on Nefertiti)"Another enjoyable historical from Moran." (Publishers Weekly, on The Second Empress)"Michelle Moran has authentically evoked an era, infusing her narrative with passages of gripping and often horrifying drama, set in one of history's most brutal periods. The scope of the author's research is staggering, but you won't need to get to the notes at the end to realise that. As historical novels go, this is of the first rank--a page-turner that is both vividly and elegantly written. I feel privileged to be able to endorse it." (Alison Weir, author of Innocent Traitor)

Rebel Queen Chapter One 1840 Imagine I took you down a long dirt road to the edge of a field, and we entered a farmer’s house built from mud brick and thatch. Now imagine I told you, “This is where I stood with the Rani of Jhansi during our escape from the British. And that corner, there, is where we changed into peasant’s clothes so she could reach the Fortress of Kalpi.” I suppose you would look from me, in my respectable sari and fine gold jewels, to the dirt floor of that one-room home and laugh. Only my eyes would remain serious, and slowly, the realization would dawn on you that all of the stories you heard must be true. The Rani of Jhansi—or Queen Lakshmi, as the British persisted in calling her—really did elude the powerful British army by dressing like a common farmer’s wife. I’m not sure why this is so surprising to people. Didn’t Odysseus manage it when he disguised himself as a beggar? And the Duke of Vienna in Measure for Measure? Perhaps people’s surprise then is that I was the one who suggested she do it, taking inspiration from characters who’d only lived on the page. After all, I was not born to read such texts. In fact, I was not born to read at all. It was Father who insisted on my education. If it had been left to Grandmother, I would never have seen anything beyond the walls of my house. For, as I’m sure you know, women throughout India are nearly all in purdah. When I was seven years old, I asked Father how this concept of secluding women came to be, and he guided me to a cool place in the shade. Our garden was large enough for a peepal tree, and it wasn’t until I was much older that I learned that not every house in Barwa Sagar was so spacious. But we were Kshatriyas, meaning our ancestors had been related to kings, just as their ancestors had been related to kings, and so on, I suppose, since the beginning of time. People have often asked me what these different castes mean, and I explain it like this: Imagine a beehive, which has workers, and breeders, and finally, a queen. Well, our castes are very much the same thing. There are Brahmins, whose job it is to be priests. There are Kshatriyas, who are the warriors and kings. There are the Vaishyas, who are merchants, farmers, and traders. And then there are the Shudras, who serve and clean. Just the same as a worker bee is born a worker bee and will die a worker bee, a person can never change their caste. But that evening, as the setting sun burnished the clouds above us, turning the sky into a wide orange sea, Father explained purdah to me. He patted his knee, and when I climbed onto his lap, I could see the knotty muscles of his arms. They bulged beneath his skin like rocks. I held out my hand, and he used his finger to trace his words onto the flat of my palm. “Do you remember the story of the first Mughal leader in India?” he wrote. I took his hand and drew the words, “He was Muslim, and we are Hindu.” “Yes. He was the one who brought purdah to our land.” “So it’s Emperor Bahadur Shah’s fault that I can’t leave our house?” Father’s arm tensed, and I knew at once that what I wrote must be wrong. “Purdah is no one’s fault,” he traced swiftly. “It’s to keep women safe.” “From what?” “Men, who might otherwise harm them.” I sat very still. Did he mean that for the rest of my life, I would never know what lay beyond the walls of our garden? That I would never be able to climb the coconut trees? I felt a deep agitation growing inside of me. “Well,” Father went on, “what’s troubling you now?” Of course, Father didn’t use words like “well.” That was my addition; the way I imagined he would have spoken if he hadn’t lost his hearing while fighting alongside the British against the Burmese. Although you may wonder what the British were doing in India, and why any of us were fighting against the Burmese at all. It began in 1600, when English sailors first arrived in my country. If you’ve ever heard the story of the camel’s nose and how, on a cold winter’s night, the camel begged its master to allow it to place its nose inside the master’s tent, then you will quickly understand the British East India Company. In the beginning, it was nothing more than a trading company buying up all of our rich spices and silks and shipping them to England, where a fortune could be made. But as the Company grew more successful, it needed to protect its profitable warehouses with several hundred armed guards. Then it needed several thousand armed soldiers. And one day, the rulers of India woke up to discover that the British East India Company had a powerful army. They were exactly like the camel, who promised at first it would just be its nose, then its legs, then its back, until finally it was the camel living inside the tent while the master shivered in the cold outside. Soon, when one of our rulers needed military aid, they didn’t turn to other maharajas like themselves; instead they asked the British East India Company. And the more favors they asked, the more powerful the Company grew. Then, in 1824, a group of maharajas in northern India decided they’d had enough. They had been watching the Burmese take over their neighbors’ kingdoms year after year, and they knew that, just like with that cunning camel, it would only end once the Burmese were seated on their thrones as well. I can’t tell you why these same maharajas didn’t see that this story might apply to the British, too. You would think the safest thing would have been to turn to each other for help. But none of those powerful men wanted to be indebted to another maharaja. So instead, they indebted themselves to an outsider. They enlisted the help of the British East India Company, which was more than happy to wage war on Burma for their own, mostly economic, reasons. Father fought in this war. Because of his caste, he was made a commanding officer and the Company paid him one hundred rupees a month for his post. I was only a few months old when he left for Burma, and there was every reason to believe that a glorious future lay ahead of Nihal Bhosale. He sent my sixteen-year-old mother letters from the front telling her that even though British customs were difficult to understand, fighting alongside these foreigners had its advantages. He was learning to speak English, and another officer had introduced him to a writer—a brilliant, unequaled writer—by the name of William Shakespeare. “According to the colonel, if I wish to understand the British, I must first understand this Shakespeare.” Father took this advice to heart. He read everything Shakespeare wrote, from Othello to The Merchant of Venice, and when the war took his hearing two years later, it was Shakespeare who kept him company in his hospital bed. Many years after this, I asked Father which of Shakespeare’s plays had comforted him the most while he was coming to terms with a world in which he’d never know the sound of his child’s voice or hear his wife sing ragas to Lord Shiva again. By that time, I had become a soldier myself in the rani’s Durga Dal—an elite group of the queen’s most trusted female guards. And by then, I, too, had read all of Shakespeare’s works. Father thought for a moment, then told me what I had already guessed. “Henry V. Because there has never been a clearer, more persuasive argument for why we go to war.” But war wasn’t what concerned me on that evening Father explained purdah to me. I was too young to understand about politics. All I knew was that I couldn’t play outside like the boys who drank juice from hairy coconut husks and staged mock battles with broken shoots of bamboo. I looked up at Father, with his bald head gleaming like a polished bowl in the sun, and wrote: “Will I always be in purdah, even when I’m grown?” “If you wish to be a respectable woman with a husband and children—as I hope you shall be—then, yes.” But just as a crow will build its nest in a tree, only to have the sparrow come and tear it apart, the life Father had planned for me was ripped away by a little bird.

Not What Was Promised By Sandra Saidak The writing was good, and the descriptions of life in 19th century India were great. But this book had two very big problems. The first was that almost nothing in the book matched the description found on Amazon and on the inside cover. The "Rebel Queen" of the title, Lakshmi, didn't even appear in the book until P. 88, and was, at best, a secondary character throughout. Far from raising two armies when the British come to take her throne, Lakshmi surrenders without a fight, hoping that letters to Queen Victoria will eventually get her back her throne. When the queen does fight (in the last 40 pages of the book), the only women who fight beside her are her ten female bodyguards. By the way, not one of these women has never fought in battle. And if the narrator, Sita, was actually Lakshmi's most trusted soldier (as described) several tragedies might have been avoided. The second problem, for me at least, was the way Sita, a strong, intelligent character and a highly skilled fighter, spent most of the book being bullied by her abusive grandmother, then later by an obnoxious "mean girl" in the queens guard. While reasons are given for why she never stands up to them, those reasons felt hollow. Sita needed to find a way around the roadblocks and stand up to these villains--but she never does. I don't like reading about victims, and victims who have the skills and incentive to fight back but don't, drive me crazy. And spoil books for me.

That's how I feel as I piece together my opinions on Rebel Queen and hope I can write something coherent. I've read two other Michelle Moran novels in the past (The Heretic Queen and Cleopatra's Daughter) and thoroughly enjoyed the characters, political intrigue, and complete immersion in ancient Egypt and Rome, respectively. So, naturally, I was expecting a similar experience with Moran's first foray into Indian history. In some ways, that's what I got - but in other ways, it wasn't.Rebel Queen is a fictional account of the final years of the Indian kingdom of Jhansi before Britain's conquest and unification of India's separate states. However, the story isn't told from the viewpoint of Rani Lakshmibai, the wife of Jhansi's last maharaja (king) Raja Gangadhar Rao. Instead, readers witness it through the eyes of Sita, a member of the Durga Dal (the rani's all-female bodyguards - not exactly an army, as described in the blurb). It seems like an odd decision, given the assumptions I'd drawn from the title, but it works quite well. The book follows Sita from her childhood through her training for the Durga Dal, to her tenure as a Durgavasi and her companionship with Rani Lakshmi. All the while, readers experience 19th century India to the fullest. Manners, rituals, food, holidays and celebrations - I truly felt like I was there with Sita, smelling camphor and spices, relishing the fabrics and vivid colors of saris and other clothing. Also, India isn't a country I've read about much in historical fiction, so it was a treat to visit someplace new and exciting through a novel.Sita's a good choice as Rebel Queen's narrator for other reasons. Firstly, she's a well-developed character. She's hard-working, educated, deeply principled, and as loyal to her birth family as she is to Rani Lakshmi and the Durga Dal. Her personal journey in Rebel Queen involves adjusting to her new life, developing a thicker skin, and learning who to trust. She doesn't always make the right choices, but she tries valiantly to redeem herself every time - sometimes with success, other times with heartbreak. Also, Sita offers unique insight on cultural differences between India and Great Britain as well as within India. Having lived in a rural village for the first 17 years of her life, she arrives in Jhansi with wide-eyed wonder and childlike naivety. Both qualities help Sita remain grounded in several "worlds" (city and rural, royal and commoner, conservative and liberal) as the conflict with the British escalates and affects everyone she cares about. And when the war finally begins, that's where Rebel Queen began its nosedive for me. By that, I don't mean that the war shouldn't have been included. It's a pivotal part of the story; readers need to understand the atrocities committed on both sides and see how it tests Sita's emotional strength. However, the first hints of war don't come until the last 100 pages of the book. From there, the trot-like pace that had allowed readers to bond with the characters and savor the world-building breaks into a canter. It was a jarring change, and I struggled with it through the novel's frenzied, abrupt ending. I actually felt dizzy at that point. I couldn't wrap my head around how so much was happening in a short amount of time page-wise, especially after a smooth start and steady build-up. That's not a good feeling to have when you finish a book. The other problem I have with Rebel Queen is the weak writing. Moran resorts to a lot of telling when it comes to her characters' emotions. Reading phrases like "I felt" don't help me feel what the character is feeling; I prefer visceral reactions and physical or internal clues. But I got very few of the latter during Rebel Queen, and my enthusiasm for the story waned as the "emotional telling" carried on. I also wasn't thrilled by Sita's tendency to revert from past tense to present tense to explain beliefs or customs to the reader. It interrupts the story-telling flow, and frustrated me more each time it popped up.All of this led to me feeling completely disengaged by the end of Rebel Queen. Even though certain aspects horrified me and should have compelled me to care more about the characters, I found myself reading solely for the hope that the quality of the story itself would improve. And it didn't, which is a shame. If I could give one reason to recommend this book, it would be for the chance to immerse yourself in India's rich, vibrant culture, which Moran captures in spectacular fashion. Otherwise, anyone who's curious to read a Michelle Moran novel should start with The Heretic Queen, Cleopatra's Daughter, or any other work besides Rebel Queen. It's an unfortunate example of what can happen when the research is all there but the quality of the writing isn't.

Wonderful By Toni Osborne Also under the title “The Last Queen of India”Once more Ms. Moran has brought to life a moment in history and has transported us back in time when the British Empire was setting its sights on India in the mid-19th century. At the time India was not a country but a collection of kingdoms. This historical fiction is of Rani (Queen) Lakshmi of Jhansi, one of the leading figures of the Indian Rebellion of 1857 and an epitome of bravery and courage.Told from the perspective of Sita, the Queen’s most trusted female soldier, the story highlights how the Queen resisted the takeover of her kingdom from the invading empire. She was so determined to protect her country and her people she raised two armies, one male and one female to ride with her into battle and defend the land she loved so much. The story mainly depicts both life at the royal court and the everyday life for the women in India who had at the time very little freedom and lived in seclusion. In the first part of the book, Sita tells how she was raised and trained to become a warrior in the Queen’s service. In the second half, Sita finds that freedom comes at a cost and must discover whom she can trust from those she can’t…In “Rebel Queen”, history plays out as the backdrop to Sita personal story and is a deeply moving story that focuses on the characters. Both the Queen and Sita are strong independent characters. This book is beautifully written and the perfect balance between facts and fiction. The author pays a lot of attention to details, especially concerning the colourful sari Indian women wear and their traditional ways of life. Although mostly a fiction this book is an eye opener on how the British took over land, crushed the local culture and set their rules upon the population (at least those still breathing). It also captures the differences with castes and why this still exist to this day.I am a huge fan of Ms. Moran and I have read and enjoyed all of her books to date. I must admit that if history lessons would have been taught in a lively manner such the author does I would have been far more attentive to my classes….The author did not forget to tells us where the fine line between her imagination and the real events stands and has included a list of references and a glossary to orient us.Once more, well- done Ms. Moran
