The hospital visit becomes even more complicated as Judith goes into labor. Recovery is slow for Charles, and although his memory has returned, he has no recollection of the past six weeks. Charles and the family return to Denver and a large number of people are waiting at the ranch to celebrate Charles’s miraculous recovery and the birth of their new baby. Charles sets about buying more property to build a warehouse with a store front and sets his eyes on the vast expanse of land where he was ambushed and travels to Kansas City to talk to the land’s owner to make the largest land purchase of his career, and makes a surprising discovery. Charles visits to his construction sites and returns to Philadelphia with his family, and together, with Darren, they make plans to begin a massive construction job and Charles decides he needs to hire 1,000 men off the street to prevent losing construction jobs to his competition. Darren warns Charles that he has tried to hire men off the street before, and it met with disastrous results. Charles decides to try something new, but he is not sure it will work. Charles’s task of hiring men off the street is complicated by the hatred of blacks and Chinese workers by white workers who are filled with prejudice against people of other cultures. It becomes a situation that Charles must overcome, or fail.

A thrilling tale of betrayal and revenge set against the nineteenth-century American frontier, the astonishing story of real-life trapper and frontiersman Hugh Glass

The year is 1823, and the trappers of the Rocky Mountain Fur Company live a brutal frontier life. Hugh Glass is among the company’s finest men, an experienced frontiersman and an expert tracker. But when a scouting mission puts him face-to-face with a grizzly bear, he is viciously mauled and not expected to survive. Two company men are dispatched to stay behind and tend to Glass before he dies. When the men abandon him instead, Glass is driven to survive by one desire: revenge. With shocking grit and determination, Glass sets out, crawling at first, across hundreds of miles of uncharted American frontier. Based on a true story, The Revenant is a remarkable tale of obsession, the human will stretched to its limits, and the lengths that one man will go to for retribution.

The Revenant: A Novel of Revenge, by Michael Punke

From Publishers Weekly Based on a true incident of heroism in the history of the American West, this debut by a Washington, D.C., international trade attorney and former bureaucrat in the Clinton administration is an almost painfully gripping drama. A Philadelphia-born adventurer, frontiersman Hugh Glass goes to sea at age 16 and enjoys a charmed life, including several years under the flag of the pirate Jean Lafitte and almost a year as a prisoner of the Loup Pawnee Indians on the plains between the Platte and the Arkansas rivers. In 1822, at age 36, Glass escapes, finds his way to St. Louis and enters the employ of Capt. Andrew Henry, trapping along tributaries of the Missouri River. After surviving months of hardship and Indian attack, he falls victim to a grizzly bear. His throat nearly ripped out, scalp hanging loose and deep slashing wounds to his back, shoulder and thigh, Glass appears to be mortally wounded. Initially, Captain Henry refuses to abandon him and has him carried along the Grand River. Unfortunately, the terrain soon makes transporting Glass impossible. Even though his death seems certain, Henry details two men, a fugitive mercenary, John Fitzgerald, and young Jim Bridger (who lived to become a frontier hero) to stand watch and bury him. After several days, Fitzgerald sights hostile Indians. Taking Glass's rifle and tossing Bridger his knife, Fitzgerald flees with Bridget, leaving Glass. Enraged at being left alone and defenseless, Glass survives against all odds and embarks on a 3,000-mile-long vengeful pursuit of his ignominious betrayers. Told in simple expository language, this is a spellbinding tale of heroism and obsessive retribution.Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information, Inc.

169 of 183 people found the following review helpful. High Adventure that Delivers! By J. K. Grice The word REVENANT is defined as "a person who returns, especially supposedly from the dead." There could be no better title for Michael Punke's high spirited western novel. In these pages, we discover historical fiction at its best. Though the book was published some years ago, it seems to be garnering more attention with a re-release, as well as anticipation of the movie THE REVENANT starring Leonardo DiCaprio, due out in January 2016. At any rate, the story centers around legendary "mountain man" Hugh Glass. The time period is the early 1820's, when traders and fur companies were searching out domains in the Rocky Mountains, and in the present day states of Nebraska, Wyoming, Colorado, Montana, and the Dakotas. It is also a time only 18 years removed from the return of Lewis and Clark from the Pacific and the triumphs of the Corps of Discovery. Word had spread throughout our young nation of the vast areas of lands where a fortune might be made through the hunting and trapping of animals. The lust for furs, hides, and pelts to propitiate European buyers played a major role in this westward expansion. Thus, endeavors like The Rocky Mountain Fur Company sprang into existence and vied with one another to gain strong footholds in prime furbearer sections of the enormous Missouri Territory. Often, financial backing was based out of St. Louis, where teams of men were organized to venture up the Missouri River, as well as its tributaries. The book centers around one such team led by a Captain Henry and included such members as John Fitzgerald, Jim Bridger, and Hugh Glass. Along with surviving the harsh elements of the Wild, these men also had to defend themselves against hostile Indian tribes like the Arikara and the Blackfeet. In addition, there was great competition from the Spanish and French that added to the urgency of securing tracts of land rich for trapping. Much of what we know of these early "mountain men" is centered around both facts and legends. Hugh Glass, Jedediah Smith, and Jim Bridger were three of the first actual white men who ventured into the Rocky Mountains and beyond. In THE REVENANT, we are given an exciting glimpse into a very early and virgin American West. It is no secret that Hugh Glass was a central figure at the time, and he was indeed attacked by a grizzly bear and left for dead by his party. Punke does such a marvelous job of weaving fact and fiction together, and he elaborates on this merger at the novel's end. What I found most fascinating about this moving saga were the rich backgrounds we are given involving the histories of the major characters. We are treated to accounts not only of Glass, but also of Bridger, Fitzgerald, Henry, and the French voyageurs. The descriptions of the bear ordeal, of Glass's stoic determination, of the Indian attacks, and of survival in the brutal wilderness itself were absolutely compelling. Punke's knowledge and visceral prose make for story telling at its finest. If you enjoy films like JEREMIAH JOHNSON and books like UNDAUNTED COURAGE or CROW KILLER, I believe you will find THE REVENANT to be a splendid read that is well worth your time....

Compelling Summer Adventure Novel By A Customer Not only is The Revanant a compelling story about revenge, but it also is a story about the overwhelming human survival instinct, particularly in early frontier America. The historical story of Hugh Glass is amazing in and of itself, but The Revanant brings it to life. The book graphically describes the seemingly insurmountable obstacles faced by trapper Hugh Glass, first in trying to survive, then in seeking vengeance. You can almost feel Hugh Glass' shattered body.In addition to being a gripping story, The Revanant literally transports you to the wild, unpredictable American West of the 1820's. It is impeccably well researched with extensive and fascinating historical detail. This detail, combined with great writing and an incredible story results in a perfect adventure novel for any summer reading list.

It is a novel of revenge yet includes so much more. The usual predictablity of this genre was lost on Punke as he relives life in the early mountain west. The story is vivid and captivating; written in such a way that you feel personally involoved. Furhtermore, the ending will leave you pondering your own resolve...Truly a great read and a debut that suggests great things for Punke's future as a writer.

LONGLISTED FOR THE NATIONAL BOOK AWARD • NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY KIRKUS REVIEWS • In this moving, lyrical, and ultimately uplifting collection of essays, Michael Paterniti turns a keen eye on the full range of human experience, introducing us to an unforgettable cast of everyday people. Michael Paterniti is one of the most original and empathic storytellers working today. His writing has been described as “humane, devastating, and beautiful” by Elizabeth Gilbert, “spellbinding” by Anthony Doerr, and “expansive and joyful” by George Saunders. In the seventeen wide-ranging essays collected for the first time in Love and Other Ways of Dying, he brings his full literary powers to bear, pondering happiness and grief, memory and the redemptive power of human connection. In the remote Ukranian countryside, Paterniti picks apples (and faces mortality) with a real-life giant; in Nanjing, China, he confronts a distraught jumper on a suicide bridge; in Dodge City, Kansas, he takes up residence at a roadside hotel and sees, firsthand, the ways in which the racial divide turns neighbor against neighbor. In each instance, Paterniti illuminates the full spectrum of human experience, introducing us to unforgettable everyday people and bygone legends, exploring the big ideas and emotions that move us. Paterniti reenacts François Mitterrand’s last meal in a rustic dining room in France and drives across America with Albert Einstein’s brain in the trunk of his rental car, floating in a Tupperware container. He delves with heartbreaking detail into the aftermath of a plane crash off the coast of Nova Scotia, an earthquake in Haiti, and a tsunami in Japan—and, in searing swirls of language, unearths the complicated, hidden truths these moments of extremity teach us about our ability to endure, and to love. Michael Paterniti has spent the past two decades grappling with some of our most powerful subjects and incomprehensible events, taking an unflinching point of view that seeks to edify as it resists easy answers. At every turn, his work attempts to make sense of both love and loss, and leaves us with a profound sense of what it means to be human. As he writes in the Introduction to this book, “The more we examine the grooves and scars of this life, the more free and complete we become.”Praise for Michael Paterniti and Love and Other Ways of Dying“One of the best books I’ve read all year . . . These pieces are exceptional artifacts of literary journalism.”—Mark O’Connell, Slate “These pieces are extraordinary. . . . Journalism elevated beyond its ordinary capacities, well into the realm of literature.”—Columbia Journalism Review “A fearless, spellbinding collection of inquiries by a brilliant, globally minded essayist whose writing is magic and whose worldview brims with compassion . . . The size of Michael Paterniti’s curiosity is matched only by the size of his heart.”—Anthony Doerr, author of All the Light We Cannot See “Michael Paterniti is a genius.”—Elizabeth Gilbert, author of The Signature of All Things “One of the best living practitioners of the art of literary journalism, able to fully elucidate and humanize the everyday and the epic.”—Dave Eggers, author of The Circle“In each of these essays, Michael Paterniti unveils life for us, the beauty and heartbreak of it, as we would never see it ourselves but now can never forget it. Paterniti is brilliant—a rare master—and one of my favorite authors on earth.”—Lily King, author of Euphoria

Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. The Long Fall of Flight One-Eleven HeavyIt was summer; it was winter. The village disappeared behind skeins of fog. Fishermen came and went in boats named Reverence, Granite Prince, Souwester. The ocean, which was green and wild, carried the vessels out past Jackrock Bank toward Pearl Island and the open sea. In the village, on the shelf of rock, stood a lighthouse, whitewashed and octagonal with a red turret. Its green light beamed over the green sea, and sometimes, in the thickest fog or heaviest storm, that was all the fishermen had of land, this green eye dimly flashing in the night, all they had of home and how to get there—that was the question. There were nights when that was the only question. This northerly village, this place here of sixty people, the houses and fences and clotheslines, was set among solid rocks breaching from the earth. It was as if a pod of whales had surfaced just as the ocean turned to land and then a village was built on their granite backs. By the weathered fishing shacks were rusted anchors like claws and broken traps and hills of coiled line. Come spring, wildflowers appeared by the clapboard church. The priest said mass. A woman drew back a curtain. A man hanged himself by the bridge. Travelers passing through agreed it was the prettiest earthly spot, snapping pictures as if gripped by palsy, nearly slipping off the rocks into the frigid waves.Late summer, a man and woman were making love under the eaves of a garishly painted house that looked out on the lighthouse—green light flashing—when a feeling suddenly passed into them, a feeling unrelated to their lovemaking, in direct physical opposition to it: an electrical charge so strong they could taste it, feel it, the hair standing up on their arms, just as it does before lightning strikes. And the fishermen felt it, too, as they went to sea and returned, long ago resigned to the fact that you can do nothing to stop the ocean or the sky from what it will do. Now they, too, felt the shove and lock of some invisible metallic bit in their mouths. The feeling of being surrounded by towering waves.Yes, something terrible was moving this way. There was a low ceiling of clouds, an intense, creeping darkness, that electrical taste. By the lighthouse, if you had been standing beneath the flashing green light on that early-September night, in that plague of clouds, you would have heard the horrible grinding sound of some wounded winged creature, listened to it trail out to sea as it came screeching down from the heavens, down through molecule and current, until everything went silent. That is, the waves still crashed up against the granite rock, the lighthouse groaned, a cat yowled somewhere near the church, but beyond, out at sea, there was silence. Seconds passed, disintegrating time . . . and then, suddenly, an explosion of seismic strength rocked the houses of Peggy’s Cove. One fisherman thought it was a bomb; another was certain the End had arrived. The lovers clasped tightly—their bodies turning as frigid as the ocean. That’s how it began. It began before that, too, in other cities of the world, with plans hatched at dinner tables or during long-distance calls, plans for time together and saving the world, for corralling AIDS and feeding the famine-stricken and family reunions. What these people held in common at first—these diplomats and scientists and students, these spouses and parents and children—was an elemental feeling, that buzz of excitement derived from holding a ticket to some foreign place. And what distinguished that ticket from billions of other tickets was the simple designation of a number: SR111. New York to Geneva, following the Atlantic coast up along Nova Scotia, then out over Greenland and Iceland and En- gland, and then down finally into Switzerland, on the best airline in the world. Seven hours if the tailwinds were brisk. There in time for breakfast on the lake.In one row would be a family with two grown kids, a computer-genius son and an attorney daughter, setting out on their hiking holiday to the Bernese Oberland. In another would be a woman whose boyfriend was planning to propose to her when she arrived in Geneva. Sitting here would be a world-famous scientist, with his world-famous scientist wife. And there would be the boxer’s son, a man who had grown to look like his legendary father, the same thick brow and hard chin, the same mournful eyes, on a business trip to promote his father’s tomato sauce.Like lovers who haven’t yet met or one-day neighbors living now in different countries, tracing their route to one another, each of them moved toward the others without knowing it, in these cities and towns, grasping airline tickets. Some, like the Swiss tennis pro, would miss the flight, and others, without tickets, would be bumped from other flights onto this one at the last minute, feeling lucky to have made it, feeling chosen. In the hours before the flight, a young blond woman with blue, almost Persian eyes said goodbye to her boyfriend in the streets of Manhattan and slipped into a cab. A fifty-six-year-old man had just paid a surprise visit to see his brother’s boat, a refurbished sloop, on the Sound, just as his two brothers and his elderly mother came in from a glorious day on the water, all that glitter and wind, and now he was headed back to Africa, to the parched veldts and skeletal victims, to the disease and hunger, back to all this worrying for the world.Somewhere else, a man packed—his passport, his socks—then went to the refrigerator to pour himself a glass of milk. His three kids roughhoused in the other room. His wife complained that she didn’t want him to fly, didn’t want him to leave on this business trip. On the refrigerator was a postcard, once sent by friends, of a faraway fishing village—the houses and fences and clotheslines, the ocean and the lighthouse and the green light flashing. He had looked at that postcard every day since it had been taped there. A beautiful spot. Something about it. Could a place like that really exist? All of these people, it was as if they were all turning to gold, all marked with an invisible X on their foreheads, as of course we are, too, the place and time yet to be determined. Yes, we are burning down; time is disintegrating. There were 229 people who owned cars and houses, slept in beds, had bought clothes and gifts for this trip, some with price tags still on them—and then they were gone.Do you remember the last time you felt the wind? Or touched your lips to the head of your child? Can you remember the words she said as she last went, a ticket in hand?Every two minutes an airliner moves up the Atlantic coast, tracing ribboned contrails, moving through kingdoms in the air demarcated by boundaries, what are called corridors and highways by the people who control the sky. In these corridors travel all the planes of the world, jetliners pushing the speed of sound at the highest altitudes, prop planes puttering at the lowest, and a phylum in between of Cessnas and commuters and corporate jets—all of them passing over the crooked-armed peninsulas and jagged coastlines and, somewhere, too, this northern village as it appears and disappears behind skeins of fog.The pilot—a thin-faced, handsome Swiss man with penetrating brown eyes and a thick mustache—was known among his colleagues as a consummate pilot. He’d recently completed a promotional video for his airline. In it, he—the energetic man named Urs—kisses his beautiful wife goodbye at their home before driving off, then he is standing on the tarmac, smiling, gazing up at his plane, and then in the cockpit, in full command, flipping toggles, running checks, in command, toggles, lights, check, command. So now here they were, in their corridor, talking, Urs and his copilot, Stephan. About their kids; both had three. About the evening’s onboard dinner. It was an hour into the flight, the plane soaring on autopilot, the engine a quiet drone beneath the noise in the main cabin, the last lights of New England shimmering out the west side of the aircraft, and suddenly there was a tickling smell, rising from somewhere into the cockpit, an ominous wreathing of—really, how could it be?—smoke. Toggles, lights, check, but the smoke kept coming. The pilot ran through his emergency checklists, switching various electrical systems on and off to isolate the problem. But the smoke kept coming. He was breathing rapidly, and the copilot, who wasn’t, said, We have a problem.Back in the cabin, the passengers were sipping wine and soda, penning postcards at thirty-three thousand feet. In first class, some donned airline slippers and supped on hors d’oeuvres while gambling on the computer screens in front of them. Slots, blackjack, keno. Others reclined and felt the air move beneath them—a Saudi prince, the world-famous scientist, the UN field director, the boxer’s son, the woman with Persian eyes—an awesome feeling of power, here among the stars, plowing for Europe, halfway between the polar cap and the moon, gambling and guzzling and gourmandizing, oblivious as even now, the pilot was on the radio, using the secret language of the sky to declare an emergency:Pan, pan, pan, said Urs. We have smoke in the cockpit, request deviate, immediate return to a convenient place. I guess Boston. (Toggles, lights, check, breathe.)Would you prefer to go in to Halifax? said air traffic control, a calm voice from a northern place called Moncton, a man watching a green hexagon crawl across a large round screen, this very flight moving across the screen, a single clean green light.Affirmative for one-eleven heavy, said the pilot. We have the oxygen mask on. Go ahead with the weather—Could I have the number of souls on board . . . for emergency services? chimed in Halifax control.Roger, said the pilot, but then he never answered the question, working frantically down his checklist, circling back over the ocean to release tons of fuel to lighten the craft for an emergency landing, the plane dropping to nineteen thousand feet, then twelve thousand, and ten thousand. An alarm sounded, the autopilot shut down. Lights fritzed on and off in both the cockpit and the cabin, flight attendants rushed through the aisles, one of the three engines quit in what was now becoming a huge electrical meltdown.Urs radioed something in German, emergency checklist air conditioning smoke. Then in English, Sorry . . . Maintaining at ten thousand feet, his voice urgent, the words blurring. The smoke was thick, the heat increasing, the checklists, the bloody checklists . . . leading nowhere, leading—We are declaring emergency now at, ah, time, ah, zero-one-two-four . . . We have to land immediate—The instrument panel—bright digital displays—went black. Both pilot and copilot were now breathing frantically. Then nothing.Radio contact ceased. Temperatures in the cockpit were rising precipitously; aluminum fixtures began to melt. It’s possible that one of the pilots, or both, simply caught fire. At air traffic control in Moncton, the green hexagon flickered off the screen. There was silence. One controller began trembling, another wept.It was falling.Six minutes later, SR111 plunged into the dark sea.The medical examiner woke to a ringing phone, the worst way to wake. Ten-something on the clock, or was it eleven? The phone ringing, in the house where he lived alone, or rather with his two retrievers, but alone, too, without wife or woman. He lived near the village with the lighthouse, had moved here less than three years ago from out west, had spent much of his life rolling around, weird things following him, demons and disasters. Had a train wreck once, in Great Britain, early in his career, a Sunday night, university students coming back to London after a weekend at home. Train left the tracks at speed. He’d never seen anything like that in his life—sixty dead, decapitations, severed arms and legs. These kids, hours before whole and happy, now disassembled. Time disintegrating in the small fires of the wreckage. After the second night, while everyone kept their stiff upper lips, he sobbed uncontrollably. He scared himself—not so much because he was sobbing, but because he couldn’t stop. There’d been a tornado in Edmonton—twenty-three dead. And then another train wreck in western Canada, in the hinterlands fifty miles east of Jasper. Twenty-five dead in a ravine. He’d nearly been drummed out of the job for his handling of that one. The media swarmed to photograph mangled bodies, and the medical examiner, heady from all the attention and a bit offended by it, knowing he shouldn’t, stuffed some towels and linens on a litter, draped them with a sheet, and rolled the whole thing out for the cameras. Your dead body, gentlemen.Later, when they found out—oh, they hated him for that. Called for his head. This had been a frustrating day, though, driving up to New Glasgow, waiting to take the stand to testify in the case of a teenage killer, waiting, waiting, four, five, six hours, time passing, nothing to do in that town except pitter here and there, waiting. Got off the stand around six, home by nine, deeply annoyed, too late to cook, got into the frozen food, then to bed, reading the paper, drifting, reading, drifting. And now the phone was ringing, a woman from the office: A jet was down. Without thinking, he said, It’s a mistake. Call me back if anything comes of it. Set the phone in its cradle, and a minute later it rang again. There’s a problem here, she said.I’ll get on my way, he said, and hung up. He automatically put a suitcase on the bed, an overnight bag, and then it dawned on him: There’d been no talk about numbers yet, the possible dead. There could be hundreds, he knew that, yes, he did know that now, didn’t he? He walked back and forth between his cupboard and his bed, flustered, disbelieving, maybe hundreds, and then the adrenaline released, with hypodermic efficiency. Hundreds of bodies—and each one of them would touch his hands. And he would have to touch them, identify them, confer what remained of them to some resting place. He would have to bear witness to the horrible thing up close, what it did up close, examine it, notate, dissect, and, all the while, feel what it did, feel it in each jagged bone.Flustered, disbelieving, it took him forty minutes to pack his bag with a couple of pairs of khakis, some underwear, shirts, a pair of comfortable shoes, some shaving gear, should have taken five minutes.

I bought it this weekend and read most of the essays already. I can't really compare his voice to anyone else, but almost every essay was an engrossing read. None of them are too long, and they are all fascinating takes on humanity in one way or another. I agree with the description of the book here on Amazon - its the writer's curiosity that brings us the stories, but its the writing itself that keeps me interested. My favorite so far is the story about the giant. I am glad to have found this writer and look forward to reading future articles.

Hold. On. Tight.

Sean Wyatt just wants bullets to stop flying his way. He did his time as a government agent and as an artifact recovery specialist. But old habits die hard.

In 1801, a British officer discovered a clue to one of the most coveted relics in history.

When Sean Wyatt rescuse a friend from being executed in the mountains of Tennessee, Sean Wyatt and his sidekick, Tommy Shultz are thrown into a high octane game of cat and mouse with a wealthy Frenchman named Gerard Dufort who will stop at nothing to get his next prize.

The two friends find themselves zipping across the globe to southern England, Copenhagen, Scotland, and the American Southwest in a race against the clock and a man with sinister plans of his own.

This action packed story is sure to keep you turning the pages until you reach the end and send an email to the author telling him to hurry up and write the next installment.

˃˃˃ If Indiana Jones and Jason Bourne had a kid together, his name would be Sean Wyatt.

The Norse Directive is packed with suspense and romance, filled with conspiracies and secret societies, and leaves you wanting more in Dempsey's breakthrough international mystery series.

Travel with Sean Wyatt as he pieces together a sequence of ancient riddles in this suspense packed thriller.

˃˃˃ You'll be turning the pages so fast you might burn your fingers.

If you love fast, up-tempo stories that don't get bogged down in a lot of bull, this series of thrillers is for you. With crime, murder, suspense, mystery, and white hot action, you're sure to keep turning the pages until you realize the story just ended. But beware, this book is not for the faint of heart. In the world of high stakes adventure, things can get pretty violent. You've been warned.

˃˃˃ Interview with the Author

Q: What made you want to write an international mystery series like this?

A: I grew up watching movies like Indiana Jones and The Goonies. Those movies were so fascinating to me. As a kid, I always wanted to be an adventurer that discovered ancient treasures, not for the financial wealth, but because I always thought, and still think, it must be so amazing to find something that someone left hidden hundreds or thousands of years before. At that moment, you are the first person to see that artifact in a long time. I also love suspense action fiction stories, terrorism novels and television shows, and especially enjoy a good thriller about conspiracies and secret societies. Jack Reacher, Jason Bourne, Jack Ryan, are all pulp heroes I can root for. It seemed logical to make Sean Wyatt like one of those guys, but one that also has a background in history, making him the Indiana Jones of action adventure thrillers.

Q: There are several books in the Sean Wyatt series. In what order should they be read?

A: The first three are a trilogy, but you can read them out of order if you really want to. I'd start with The Secret of the Stones and then go to The Cleric's Vault and The Last Chamber. The rest of the books in the series are stand alone novels.

Q: Why should readers check out your Sean Wyatt novels?

A: Social proof. All of the Sean Wyatt novels have been in the top ten best sellers in Thrillers and Mysteries, Suspense Thrillers and Mysteries, Historical Thrillers, and Political Thrillers. As they say, the proof is in the pudding. On top of that, though, the books are just fun. You get an up-tempo, sometimes violent story that will also shed light on ancient mysteries that we are only now beginning to unravel.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. knock-your-socks-off roller-coaster international suspense thriller By Mallory Heart Reviews REVIEW: THE NORSE DIRECTIVE by Ernest DempseyThe newest in Ernest Dempsey' s wildly popular international thriller series features a protagonist thoughtful and self-analytical enough to realize that his good intentions for a life spent quietly on the peace side may be misleading; his magnetic resonance to the dark side of international enforcement is still much too strong. Enjoy the rocketing pace of this compelling thriller!I reviewed a digital ARC generously provided by the author for review purpose, but this novel is a definite must-buy.

As an aficionado of thrillers that center around ancient mysteries, I can say with confidence that this author just keeps getting better. The only thing that I missed in this tale was that we didn't really get to know Sean's girlfriend Adrianna much better. While she was present throughout most of the novel, she played a more passive role in this book. I think she'd make a great main character in a novel centered around her exploits, "hint, hint". I look forward to the next Sean Wyatt novel and anything else this author writes.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. you need to be good to yourself and get this book By Janice Mann Here is yet another thrilling adventure from the super-talented pen of Ernest Dempsey!! If you have never heard of Sean Wyatt, you need to be good to yourself and get this book! If you are already a Sean Wyatt fan, then you know that you must get this next installment of his adventures. This book stands on its own, but reading them all in order would be the best way to experience the excellent writing of Ernest Dempsey. I am very fortunate to be on the advance team for Ernest's books, and I receive a free copy in exchange for any ideas or editing suggestions and then for an honest review. What is really great is loving this character and his adventures, because I really don't like leaving bad reviews, and I know from the outset that I won't have that problem! Not with Sean Wyatt! And definitely not with Mr. Dempsey! In this book, Sean Wyatt is once again introduced to, and then becomes immersed in, a search for an ancient relic - one that has been hidden through history, and one that brings out those who would do much evil in order to obtain it. The action is non-stop, edge-of-your-seat, nail-biting, wonderful stuff. You will be taken on an adventure around the world, and, because of the great talent of the author's for research and description, you will feel you are there in every location. At one point, I actually felt I was experiencing jet-lag with the characters, but then I realized that it was just the adrenaline rush with the subsequent let-down of all the exciting events. Yes, it was that good, and I am so sure that most people will agree that I am recommending it to all, without reservation! Also, for me, as a die-hard fan, the ending was especially good and left me totally satisfied with Sean's decision regarding the relic, as well as another decision - one that has me soooooo excited about the next Sean Wyatt adventure!!! I'll say no more except that I am now off to purchase the final copy and read it all over again!! Buy this book! You won't be sorry!

Bailey Has Just Discovered a Dark Secret in Volstead Manor By JohnBerten Bailey Walker is trying to put her life in order, and she seems to be on the right track. She is close to establishing her wedding plans, and her dream of adopting a child is about to become a reality. In addition, she is finally starting to feel at home in her lovely, gothic-style mansion, Volstead Manor, despite some of the more creepy aspects of its architecture. Unfortunately for Bailey, one of the ingredients to her recipe for happiness could turn out to be a catalyst for disaster.Someone is conspiring against Bailey, and it seems that this enemy has plans to purge Volstead Manor through fire. The authorities believe that the cause of the minor blaze was merely electrical in nature, but Bailey, an amateur sleuth, knows better than that. In the midst of her personal investigation, she discovers a vault hidden in her cellar, sealed off from prying eyes for many years. The secret she finds there has ties to the darkest period of Prohibition, when some groups would resort to the most heinous acts in order to maintain their profitable bootlegging practices. Now, as Bailey makes every effort to solve the case of this mystery mansion fire, she realizes that her life is in grave danger. And she must act quickly, because the villain is on its way. She may only have hours to live......Another Grave Matter is the third book in Anita Higman's Volstead Manor series of Christian cozy mysteries. Higman has been writing mystery for a while and seems to possess a knack for the genre. It is clear from this novel that she genuinely cares about her heroine, Bailey Walker, who is at the center of the novel. Bailey is a well-developed and dynamic character who has a way of drawing you into her plight and the pressure of her world as it seems to be crashing down around her.If you enjoy cozy mysteries with undertones of Christian fiction, then this is definitely a novel for you. Also, for readers who enjoy well-crafted and suspenseful mystery-style works that are simple to read and satisfying, look for Another Grave Matter by Anita Higman. When you need a good diversion from life, this is the series to go to. It's just edge of the seat enough to not scare you, although my heart rate increased a few times. The main character, Bailey, is a whole lot braver than I am. Believable characters pulled me right into the neighborhood. It was a great ride and sad to see that I finished all three. One of those story lines that you miss when you're done reading it. Great writing and a really fun ride!

6 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Third in a well written series of Christian Mysteries By drkhimxz I would judge this book to be about a three star rating for the average reader . Fans will probably find it in keeping with the quality of the series to this date and give it a four or five. The story is set in what is essentially an off-off Broadway stage set: three adjacent houses on a street. The cast of characters include two outsiders and a group of friends, mostly neighbors and one financee. There is only one important scene outside this limited range of sets and people. From the two earlier books, we know that most of the action takes place in the heroine's mind: we hear her pleas to God (this is labelled a 'Christian' novel) and deliberations upon events in process and anticipated. Mainly, this internal dialogue focuses on her unworthiness, her friends potential threats to her, and the potential threats, posed by the few outsiders, to herself and/or the mansion she has inherited (which gives the series its title). Her God is unceasingly implored to provide satisfactory answers to all her problems and expected to pay attention to her most trivial needs. One does get bored with the monologue since it reflects constant suspicion of almost everyone, including her friends, the usual overweening snoopiness of heroines in cozy mysteries, and a constant replay of the mind set of Red Skelton's 'Mean Widdle Kid' (that is, when faced by the temptation to do something she thinks may be very dangerous for her, she consistently yields to the temptation regardless of the danger involved and the ease of getting advice or aid from others. This behavior is extremely perplexing to the average person, since it recurs so frequently; one only accepts it through understanding, from reading other 'cozies', that there would be no book without this character trait. The denouement carries this quirk to an extreme; one can't say why the author found it necessary for her heroine to go so far beyond common sense as to be almost certifiable. The essential story has to do with the house she has inherited from her Grandmother. We already know from the first two volumes in the series, that it was the home of a notorious group of woman who sold whiskey during Prohibition and who left behind a jewel that the heroine has sold for a sum, which, when added to the $300,000 dollars in cash her Grandmother left hidden for her in the house (without telling her about it,of course), has made her wealthy. The book begins with a fire in the house she now owns; it is being renovated using her new found wealth. Who set the house on fire? Who left her a threatening note? Who is coming into her house when she is not there? Most of the action is related to the Romantic elements of the plot: her forthcoming marriage to a wonderful man she thinks is too good for her, her best friend's boy friends, and how to get her married to one of them, another friend's new boyfriend, whether she, herself, will finally be married, and, overall, how she can become more worthy of the man she is to marry, and how she can lead anyone who comes along, who is not yet on the righteous path, onto it.The author writes well; the actions are consistent to the pattern of this and previous plots. She expects us to accept the conventions inherent in a Christian Romantic Mystery and those who can, will certainly find this an enjoyable reading experience.

Wonderful story By Mary Armbrust this is such a sweet love story I love how it shows so many different sides and how these 2 young people just clicked when they met. Aubrey Forrest is just like any other girl her age that is in an Amish community. Jamie is new to the community and I love the way he was brought into the story. I can't wait to read the next book in this series I know it will be great.

When he finds out the truth he is upset and slowly gets over it but worries she will leave like her sister did By Barbara Hightower This was a cute Amish romance. Aubrey doesn't know if she is going to partake in Rumspringa as her sister Emma has up and left. She ran off and is now in NY what her family and Jamie doesn't know, Emma writes Aubrey letters. Aubrey really likes Jamie who has moved to town recently.Jamie knows she is hiding something but continues to get to know Aubrey as he really likes her. When he finds out the truth he is upset and slowly gets over it but worries she will leave like her sister did. The whole community feels the same way and even whispers about it.A surprise happens ( don't want to spoil anything ) and Aubrey has to make a choice that might make Jamie rethink his love for her.The authors do a great job with the book, there are some typo's and grammar issues that can be easily fixed. The story continues to book 2 which I will be looking for. I want to know how this couple does. A very interesting read.

I will warn though that the book is "to be continued" and ends with enough to leave you hanging. Now, the one thing that I didn't like was there are a lot of typos and grammatical errors throughout the whole book. I would like to see it get "republished" after proof-reading. I do overall feel like it's a great book though

Not Your Average Romance By Atlanta Whitlock After reading My Mr Romance series I could already tell that this next series was going to be just as good. I just loved the flow of how the story went along and it kept me gripped till the very end and hopefully it will do the same for you.Four girls who are just starting their first year at college end up becoming best of friends and also roommates, they all decide that the first thing that they should do to settle into their new surroundings is a game, what this game entails is that whichever girl is the naughtiest within 30 days wins, the losers have to clean their new apartment. Each of the girls have their own idea of how to win at the game however college isn't straight forward, things are bound to happen along the way that will mess with how the girls perceive college, relationships and their friendship. No matter what C.C Cartwright always delivers, this might look like any other Romance book but trust me when I say it is so much more. The relationships that develop within this book keep you on your toes because you never really know which direction it is going to take you in, all I can say is thank you again for an excellent book with a deep story, characters so real I wish that I could meet them and so many twists and turns that it kept me guessing till the end.

Only a few pages where the author tries to get you to buy more. Felt like a scam to me. Even free, this book isn't worth it. I tried the next installments to see if they got better. They didn't, so I returned them for a full refund. Don't waste your time. PASS!
