Being Kind to Yourself Is the Best Medicine By Barb Markway This is the book I wish I'd had when I began my journey with chronic pain ten years ago. It's practical, reassuring, and written by someone who's traveled the journey.Toni Bernhard is a best-selling and award-winning writer of How to Be Sick and How to Wake Up. She also writes a popular blog on Psychology Today, Turning Straw Into Gold. Her readers adore her, as evidenced by her over 200,000 fans on Facebook. Previously a law professor, Toni became ill in 2001 while on a trip to Paris and has never recovered her health. Experiencing chronic flu-like symptoms and often being bed-bound hasn't stopped her from leaving a full and rich life.As Toni writes in her introduction, How to Live Well is "one dose stark reality, one dose practical skills, and one dose humor.” Her books are inspired by her 25 years of Buddhist study and practice, but like well-known Western dharma teachers such as Sharon Salzberg and Tara Brach, she explains these concepts in a relatable way. As she wrote in her first book, she considers the Buddha not to be a god, but the greatest psychologist of all time. You definitely don’t have to be Buddhist or know anything about it to benefit from this book. In fact, How to Live Well focuses less on Buddhism per se and more on mindfulness and other proven cognitive practices. Each of the chapters is relatively short, and can stand alone. You can dip in and out of the book depending on your needs. For people with chronic pain and illness, who sometimes have short attention spans (like me) this is a great feature.I always like reading the Table of Contents before I buy a book. Here are the major sections in How to Live Well, with each section having anywhere from three to nine short chapters.I. Skills to Help with Each DayII. Mindfulness: Potent Medicine for Easing the Symptoms of Chronic IllnessIII. Responding Wisely to Troubling Thoughts and EmotionsIV. Special Challenges (includes topics such as sleep, uncertainty, dealing with doctors, relationships with caregivers, and young people with chronic illness)V. Isolation and LonelinessVI. Enjoy the life you haveVII. For Family, Friends, Caregivers, and Anyone Concerned about Chronic IllnessVIII. Last but Not Least (Including Toni’s “true confessions” and heartfelt wishes for her readers)I’ve learned so much from Toni, but probably the single most important thing is the life-changing practice of being kind to myself. In a previous interview with her, she said:“I look at it this way. We control so little in our lives, but the one thing we can control is how we treat ourselves. I see no reason for us not to be as kind and gentle with ourselves as we can be. It’s not our fault that we have health problems. We’re in bodies and they get sick and injured. It will happen to everyone. This is how it’s happen to us.”In her warm and wonderful way, Toni reminds us in her new book that “being kind to yourself is the best medicine.”

Support and comfort for the whole family By LynnG Beloved author Toni Bernhard has done it again, with another book full of wise, practical reflections on how to live well even with chronic pain and illness. Based on her own experience and laced with gentle humor, Toni’s words offer support and comfort for anyone whose life has been turned upside down by chronic illness, including family and friends of the sick person.I turned immediately to Chapter 39, “Letting Go: A Not-To-Do List for Caregivers.” Here Toni’s gentle voice allowed me to smile in recognition of mistakes I’ve made while navigating the uncharted and unwelcome territory of caregiver. Trying to pretend everything is like it used to be – been there, done that. Expecting myself to always, always be “up” for the job -- check. Feeling guilty when I did go out and enjoy myself. Allowing myself to become socially isolated along with my loved one as friendships withered away. It felt comforting to see so much of my own experience validated. The rest of the book felt equally relevant. A not-to-do list for the chronically ill rang many bells. Have I ever squandered precious energy worrying about what others thought? – Yes. Treated disheartening thoughts and emotions as permanent fixtures in my mind? – Yes. Ignored signals from my aging body to say “no” to an activity? – Definitely. Every chapter addresses topics directly relevant to me as a person simply trying to live life on life’s terms, such as developing the confidence to say “no”; surviving a bad mood; longing for some aspect of life that no longer exists; coping with emotions such as loneliness, envy, resentment; and many others.Toni’s voice is light and unpretentious, never preachy. As in her two previous books, she offers no quick fixes; rather, she describes her own experiences in nearly 15 years of chronic illness and the simple, doable practices that have worked for her. I loved this book and will refer to it often. Recommended for just about anyone.

By Rachel Hadas I always feel that even one good idea from any kind of self-help book from Epictetus or Marcus Aurelius to Pema Chodron makes the book worthwhile, worth returning to, and probably the source of other good ideas. This is eminently true of Toni Bernhard's books, and this latest one is no exception. I've already read it twice and will return to it, and I strongly recommend it. Her voice is conversational, confiding, honest, and just smart; her anecdotes all have a point; her sympathies and insights are never squishy but always firm and applicable. Toni has overcome a discouraging and frustrating situation - not "battled" it, but managed it, made meaning out of it, and she continues to share that hard-won meaning with others. Highly recommended. -Rachel Hadas, poet and author of a dementia memoir, STRANGE RELATION: A Memoir of Marriage, Dementia, and Poetry (Paul Dry Books 2011)

A groundbreaking look at the connection between germs and mental illness, and how we can protect ourselves. Is it possible to catch autism or OCD the same way we catch the flu? Can a child's contact with cat litter lead to schizophrenia? In her eye-opening new book, National Book Critics Circle Award-winning author Harriet Washington reveals that we can in fact "catch" mental illness. In INFECTIOUS MADNESS, Washington presents the new germ theory, which posits not only that many instances of Alzheimer's, OCD, and schizophrenia are caused by viruses, prions, and bacteria, but also that with antibiotics, vaccinations, and other strategies, these cases can be easily prevented or treated. Packed with cutting-edge research and tantalizing mysteries, INFECTIOUS MADNESS is rich in science, characters, and practical advice on how to protect yourself and your children from exposure to infectious threats that could sabotage your mental and physical health.

Infectious Madness: The Surprising Science of How We "Catch" Mental Illness, by Harriet A. Washington

Review "Terrifying and comforting in equal measure. Infectious Madness will inspire healthy debate and...bold new strategies for prevention and treatment."―—Priscilla Gilman, More Magazine"A fascinating exploration of how common infections can affect mental illness."―Shanda Deziel, Chatelaine"An impressive array of technical research is presented in a readable style in Infectious Madness."―Library Journal"It used to be obvious what caused mental illness--depravity, a rotten soul, being in cahoots with the Devil. Or maybe just terrible mothering. We've escaped this primordial muck of attribution, learning that mental illnesses are biological disorders, complete with chemical and structural abnormalities in the brain, and with risk factors ranging from genes, hormones and fetal life to socioeconomic status. This superb book reviews the novel realization that infectious pathogens, and the immune system's response to them, can be risk factors for mental illness as well. The book has a broad, exciting range, considering 'contagion' in both the reductive sense, as well as an in the expansive societal manner. This is fascinating material and Harriet Washington is a great writer -- clear and accessible, witty, probing, and able to dissect the controversies in this field with great objectivity."―Robert Sapolsky, author of Why Zebras Don't Get Ulcers "Your views on the causes of mental illness will be forever altered when you read this profoundly humane and transformative book."―Carl Hart, PhD, Associate Professor of Psychology, Columbia University"Infectious Madness is a fascinating book about the role of infectious diseases in mental illness. Washington challenges us to expand our view of the causes, prevention, and treatment of emotional disorders. I highly recommend it!"―Alvin F. Poussaint, MD, Professor of Psychiatry, Harvard Medical School"With Infectious Madness, Harriet Washington sounds a much-needed alarm -- although not a welcome one. Turning old-fashioned germ theory inside out, she explains that we humans are the slow-moving interlopers in a world of microbes. And it's not just our health but our instincts, desires, feelings, and even our grasp on reality that are at stake."―--Philip Alcabes, Professor of Public Health, Adelphi University, author of Dread: How Fear and Fantasy Have Fueled Epidemics from the Black Death to Avian Flu"In Infectious Madness, Harriet Washington confirms her position as one of our most thought-provoking medical writers. Led by Washington on a whirlwind tour of early modern medicine in the 18th century, germ theory, Western anorexia, African sleeping sickness, schizophrenia, and everywhere else, we will forever be unable to think of our microbial environment in the same way. The same, for that matter, might be said of our view of the social environment in which the collective enterprise of medicine transpires."―Samuel Roberts, PhD, Director, Columbia University Institute for Research in African-American Studies, and Associate Professor of Sociomedical Sciences, Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health

About the Author Harriet A. An important update on the science behind mental (brain) disorders By RGMD As I child psychiatrist I applaud Harriet Washington for writing a book that helps people understand how mental illness is most often the manifestation of a biologically based brain disorder that is intricately connected with what happens in the rest of the body. Infections play an important role in psychiatric illness, and we are only at the beginning of exploring this frontier. Her pioneering book is easy to read, and yet medically rich. She cites important studies, acknowledges the role of early thinkers and how their theories and findings were ridiculed, rejected and lost to the world until the time was right. Given the high cost socially, emotionally and monetarily of mental disorders to the individual and society as a whole, I hope this book receives the attention it truly deserves.

17 of 17 people found the following review helpful. "We are losing the evolutionary battle." By E. Bukowsky Much of the information in Harriet A Washington's "Infectious Madness" is not new. We have long known that the mind and body are inextricably connected, that friendly bacteria in our bodies are essential to our well-being, and that an overuse of antibiotics hampers our ability to counteract the effect of pathogens--especially in hospitals, where immune-compromised patients fall prey to MRSA and other deadly invaders. One of Washington's most intriguing themes is the possible connection between infections in pregnant women and young children and the approximately ten to twenty percent of mental disorders that subsequently manifest themselves. These include autism; anorexia; schizophrenia; bipolar disorder; OCD; and Tourette syndrome, any of which may appear after the infections have abated. Should we rule out genetic, behavioral, and environmental causes as contributing factors? The answer is a resounding no. Washington cites many studies that point to the existence of infectious madness and insists that "today, the evidence for a wide variety of pathogen spread mental illnesses is copious and rigorous." Nevertheless, these studies are inconclusive; there is still much to be learned about this complex issue.Washington is an award-winning writer who has a thorough command of her subject. She enlightens and engages us with a variety of facts, figures, anecdotes, and social commentary, discussing how cultural factors, biases, and inflexibility on the part of the medical and pharmaceutical establishments have exacerbated our public health woes. Although the author makes her case intelligently and enthusiastically, she often repeats herself and, in the final chapters, the narrative begins to flag. Tighter editing and fewer tangents would have made this a more readable work of non-fiction. As it stands, "Infectious Madness" clearly indicates that we should pay far more attention to the many (and sometimes contradictory) ways in which people and microbes interact. When it comes to fighting disease, Washington notes, "We are involved in a chess game, not a brute battle to the death."

By Andile Mahlangeni-Byndon/THOTN I am a fan of Ms. Washington's work and I am familiar with her previous books "medical apartheid, and medical monopolies." I actually pre-ordered this book and received it on my kindle the moment it was made available. I thought this book was very well written, and extremely organized. One thing I loved about this book is the fact that it sparks the readers interests to want to investigate more on the subjects she talks about. She does a great job with finding historical evidence in order to get her points across. She does this in her other books, and has truly mastered that style of writing. I would recommend this book for those who are passionate about medicine, medical research, and medical history in general. I will definitely be writing a review on my website about it. An overall great book! Peace. -AMB/THOTN

Multiple award winning, #1 New York Times bestselling author Neil Gaiman returns to dazzle, captivate, haunt, and entertain with this third collection of short fiction following Smoke and Mirrors and Fragile Things—which includes a never-before published American Gods story, “Black Dog,” written exclusively for this volume.

In this new anthology, Neil Gaiman pierces the veil of reality to reveal the enigmatic, shadowy world that lies beneath. Trigger Warning includes previously published pieces of short fiction—stories, verse, and a very special Doctor Who story that was written for the fiftieth anniversary of the beloved series in 2013—as well “Black Dog,” a new tale that revisits the world of American Gods, exclusive to this collection.

Trigger Warning explores the masks we all wear and the people we are beneath them to reveal our vulnerabilities and our truest selves. Here is a rich cornucopia of horror and ghosts stories, science fiction and fairy tales, fabulism and poetry that explore the realm of experience and emotion. In Adventure Story—a thematic companion to The Ocean at the End of the Lane—Gaiman ponders death and the way people take their stories with them when they die. His social media experience A Calendar of Tales are short takes inspired by replies to fan tweets about the months of the year—stories of pirates and the March winds, an igloo made of books, and a Mother’s Day card that portends disturbances in the universe. Gaiman offers his own ingenious spin on Sherlock Holmes in his award-nominated mystery tale The Case of Death and Honey. And Click-Clack the Rattlebag explains the creaks and clatter we hear when we’re all alone in the darkness.

A sophisticated writer whose creative genius is unparalleled, Gaiman entrances with his literary alchemy, transporting us deep into the realm of imagination, where the fantastical becomes real and the everyday incandescent. Full of wonder and terror, surprises and amusements, Trigger Warning is a treasury of delights that engage the mind, stir the heart, and shake the soul from one of the most unique and popular literary artists of our day.

Trigger Warning: Short Fictions and Disturbances, by Neil Gaiman

Review Praise for Trigger Warning: “Everything that endears Gaiman to his legions of fans is on display ... Full of all manner of witches and monsters and things that creep in the night, this collection will thoroughly satisfy faithful fans and win new ones—if there’s anyone out there left unconverted. (Kirkus Reviews)“There’s much to revel in here, especially for those who’ve never read anything by Gaiman.” (Huffington Post)“[T]his collection of stories and poems doesn’t disappoint....Gaiman has warned us about the monsters, but then come magic and miracles. And love.” (Washington Post)“[Trigger Warning] showcases the breadth and depth of Gaiman’s talent and the unique plangent warmth he brings to fantasy fiction. He is never anything less than a pleasure to read.” (Financial Times)“Gaiman’s is one of the most distinctive voices in modern fantasy.” (Locus)“Gaiman displays an uncanny knack for compressing his expansive imagination into the close quarters of his stories’ caves, cottages, and creepy rooms....[he] takes full advantage of his wide range, and it makes for exciting, often musical writing.” (Boston Globe)‘All of [the stories] are told with an assured, masterly confidence that should please anyone who misses seeing a new Ray Bradbury collection on the shelf at the library.” (Newsday)“Gaiman calls the stories a “hodgepodge,” with no real interweaving theme throughout. But each of the stories and poems celebrates a different aspect of storytelling that has informed the author’s life.” (NPR)“Trigger Warning is a comfortable hodgepodge of material ... but there’s enough serious-minded and deeply felt fantasy and horror to make readers hope that it won’t be almost a decade before Gaiman completes another similar volume.” (San Francisco Gate)“[Gaiman]’s prolific, like Stephen King, and apparently inexhaustible: He dreams up stories as naturally as he breathes.” (Slate)“Lovingly crafted...gleefully enjoyable.” (Bustle.com)“[I]t’s the phenomenon of connecting mythology and modern life that makes Gaiman such a captivating author.” (Winnipeg Free Press)“[T]his is not a ‘best of’ collection, though you’d be forgiven for thinking so at many instances, since Gaiman is, as always, a skilled storyteller.” (Tor.com)“Neil Gaiman’s writing is so present, so engaging, that it can send spasms of bone-chilling terror through your body and your reaction would still be, ‘Please sir, I want some more.’” (Pittsburgh Post-Gazette)“Each short piece serves as an exciting foray into some macabre microcosm of his mind. ...It’s a testament to Gaiman’s versatility that he exhibits so many different styles of writing in this single anthology.” (The Harvard Crimson)“The short stories in this collection are shocking, disturbing, funny, insightful ... Trigger Warning offers a good introduction to the works of Neil Gaiman, or a delightful addition to the collection of someone who has been following him for a long time. If you’re a fan, don’t miss this one.” (Oklahoma City Oklahoman)“There is something for every type of Gaiman fan here, and those new to his work will find this to be a solid introduction to the type of stories he crafts: lyrical, literary, sometimes quite chilling, and always strange and provocative. ...This is a book to savor and enjoy.” (Bookreporter.com)“Those who want to greet and shake hands, or settle in for a conversational catch-up with Gaiman’s delightfully dramatic minstrel’s tale-by-the-campfire style will love everything in Trigger Warning, naturally.” (Booklist)“Gaiman is such a powerful and evocative writer that almost everything he churns out serves to justify the aforementioned cultural triumph of fantasy literature over realism and modernism. Gaiman’s attention to craft, passion for language and profound respect for the mythological roots...come through even in his abbreviated prose fragments.” (New York Times Book Review)

From the Back Cover

In this wide-ranging collection of short fiction, Neil Gaiman pierces the veil of reality to reveal the enigmatic, shadowy world that lies beneath. This rich compendium includes previously published stories, poetry, and a very special Dr. Who tale that was written for the fiftieth anniversary of the beloved series, as well as the never-before-published American Gods novella "Black Dog," in which Shadow Moon stops at a village pub on his way back to America. Horror and ghost stories, speculative fiction and fairy tales, fabulism and verse—all combine to illustrate the strength and breadth of Gaiman's storytelling mastery and cement his reputation as one of the finest writers at work today.

Gaiman Excels at Short Fiction; Excellent Collection By Scott Knight I just finished reading Trigger Warning by Neil Gaiman, and once again he has hit the ball out of the park. This is another fantastic collection of short stories from one of the best story-tellers around. There is no specific theme running through the stories; however, Gaiman mentions that a "trigger warning" suggests that readers should be aware that they may encounter characters or situations that may "trigger" fear or otherwise upset them. (I didn't really see this, although several of the stories are dark, bordering on downright creepy). While several of the stories were previously published, but they were all new to me. Among my favorites are: A Lunar Labyrinth (very creepy); The Case of Death and Honey (a terrific Sherlock Holmes story which also explains how he seems to live longer than he should); Nothing O'Clock (a Doctor Who story with the Eleventh Doctor: It seemed to perfectly capture Matt Smith's portrayal of the Doctor, and was a terrific read); and Kether to Malkuth (a bittersweet story that seems to be even deeper than it appears, and is hard to explain); and The Sleeper and the Spindle (a cool and unique retelling of the Snow White and Sleeping Beauty stories).Gaiman is a master at his craft, and like pretty much everything else he writes, Trigger Warning is wonderful. It is immersive and sublime, hiding themes and bigger ideas in prose that is exquisite and easy to read (that should be a book blurb). One caution - The main reason I wanted to read this book was for the story Black Dog, which closes the collection (it is a sequel to Gaiman's terrific American Gods). Unfortunately, my preview copy did not contain this story, which means I'm going to have to work to track it down.I highly recommend Trigger Warning. Gaiman fans will love it, and the short story format provides an easy and unintimidating way to sample his works for those looking to read him for the first time.I received a preview copy of this book from HarperCollins Publishers in exchange for an honest review.

By EA Solinas The mind of Neil Gaiman is a fertile place of gods, monsters, aliens, magic lingering in ordinary places and a sense that the world is a much wilder, stranger place than we think it is.And all those things come up in "Trigger Warning: Short Fictions and Disturbances," Gaiman's third collection of his short stories and poems -- while these stories can be as different from each other as humanly possible (an ode to David Bowie, a few twisted fairy tales, a historical story about a Scottish dwarf with revenge on his mind), they share a sense of magic and cosmic wonderment, misting through his elegant, versatile prose.Among the tales here:* "Black Dog," a story set a few years after "American Gods." Shadow is wandering through England on his way back to the US, when he meets a kindly couple who allow him to stay in their home. But the specter of a faerie dog brings death, mystery, and an ancient magic that could be fatal even to an American god...* A Scottish dwarf asks a former reaver to help him find a certain cave, supposedly filled with magical gold. As the two men journey to the Misty Isle, the dwarf gradually reveals his true reason for being there.* A haunting look at the old age of Sherlock Holmes, reflecting on the decay of the British empire and solving one final mystery.* A timid young artist hears that his first teenage girlfriend has been in contact with some of the people he knows... and the problem is, he made her up.* Jemima Glorfindel Petula Ramsey's questionnaire, and exactly what happened to her fake-tan-loving sister Nerys. Hint: it involves floating, glowing, claims of godhood and dark chocolate.* A year's worth of mini-stories, involving ghosts, pirates, genies, preteen soldiers, vicious ducks, a brazier, a homeless kid, a mysterious string of bizarre deliveries, disagreeing parents, igloos made of books, Australian fires and what they create, and a magical ring that keeps coming back.* A handful of poems, about chairs, landladies, Saint Columba, a witch who "hid her life in a box made of dirt," and the evil fairy from "Sleeping Beauty."* A flea market seller who has a strange story of time travel, interdimensional rooms, ancient empires, tiny statuettes and a boy named Farfal The Unfortunate.* Obediah Polkinghorn, the Uninventor, who has the ability to alter reality so that certain inventions (flying cars, jetpacks, the Wispamuzak) never come into existence, and what he does when he finished uninventing forever.* "Nothing O'Clock," a Dr. Who fanfic (does it count as a fanfic if it's professionally published, and is by a man who has written actual episodes?), where the Doctor and Amy arrive on Earth... only to discover that it is devoid of humans, after being officially sold to the Kin. How to fix it? Go back to when it was first sold by an unwitting family!* A pair of fairy tales retold in Gaiman's sensibilities -- an update of "Diamonds and Toads" set in a bleak, dreary urban environment, and "The Sleeper and the Spindle," a sort of mash-up of "Snow White" and "Sleeping Beauty," starring a queen who decides to rescue a legendary sleeping princess with the help of her dwarf sidekicks.* And several other stories that linger on the fringes -- a "lunar labyrinth" that grants wishes to people who successfully navigate it, a love letter, a mother lamenting her son's horrifying death at sea, a pleasantly unimpressive mother who knows of interesting "adventures," a man struggling to remember the name of a great author, a guy who learns of the madness that comes from visiting Jerusalem, a spooky little story about the terrifying Click-Clacks, and a mythic sci-fi ode to David Bowie. Many authors are commonly called "magical," but Neil Gaiman deserves the label more than most -- he has a special knack for unpredictability that few authors can even approach. Not only can anything happen in his collections of short stories, but you have no idea what KIND of "anything" will flow from the wellspring of his mind. There's no obvious pattern, no overarching theme that might restrict his imagination. And that is one of the best aspects of "Trigger Warning." In this collection, Gaiman deftly leaps from the macabre to the whimsical, the gloriously weird to the dramatic, the haunting to the magical. No matter how mundane the setting, he can draw back a veil and reveal something that was hidden from our eyes, whether it's dark magic ("Black Dog," "About Cassandra"), personal tragedy and drama ("Down To A Sunless Sea," "The Truth is a Cave in the Black Mountains") or just the strangeness of the world we live in which we otherwise might not notice ("Jerusalem").And his writing is no less versatile. While every story is written in a crisp, shimmering style that is very recognizably his, he drifts around through different kinds of stories -- one is told through a questionnaire, another is an overheard monologue, and some are just conversations. What unites them is the glimmering clarity of his writing, full of beautiful similes ("His hair framed his face like a wolf-grey halo") and snappy cleverness ("And pterodactyls have been extinct for fifty million years." "If you say so, dear. Your father never really talked about it").Neil Gaiman at his best is on display in "Trigger Warning: Short Fictions and Disturbances" -- a collage of shorter pieces, ranging from darkly enchanting novellas to magical little puffs of whimsy. There are more things in heaven and earth than are dreamt of in our philosophy, but a few of them can be found here.

Neil Gaiman’s newest short story collection is called “Trigger Warning: Short Fictions and Disturbances.” I just love that last word in the subtitle! It’s such a perfect word to convey the deliciously off-kilter feelings I felt when I read these stories. Even though this book has just been published, I’m already in the process of reading it a second time. I couldn’t resist. Gaiman is such an awesome storyteller and this collection really showcases his creative literary talent. The first time I read this book, I was swept away with the pure joy of the reading experience. Of course, when the book ended, I felt a big let down. I wanted more stories. We human animals must have some innate longing for myth and fantasy; Gaiman’s stories seem to quench that longing in some essential and primal way. That’s the deep-seated urge that must draw me to his books.I certainly don’t want to give the impression that I was overjoyed with each and every story. Isn’t it true that none of us ever love every chocolate in a box, every song in an album, or every story in a collection? Some stories are better than others, and a few I didn’t like at all, but in the balance, I was besotted…and that’s coming from a reader who doesn’t particularly like short stories in the first place. But I do love Gaiman, and reading him is all about being transport to another realm of reality, about having your normal everyday emotions disturbed (yes, here’s that word again), about being tipped off balance into a state of wonder, humor, terror, suspense, spine-tingling chills, or a delightful mixture of all of that, and more.Every one of the stories in this collection was new to me, but as the author explained in the introduction, most have been published before. There are only three totally new stories. The remaining twenty-one were published one or more times in some other venue or media. But few people have been exposed to them there even though a few are major award winners. Most had a previous life as part of a multi-author anthology dedicated to a specific overarching theme. Five stories had a previous life in a multi-author anthology celebrating a famous author, namely: Gene Wolf, Ray Bradbury, Jack Vance, Sherlock Holmes, and Arthur C. Clarke. Two were collaborations with musical drama and performance artist Amanda Palmer. Four were published as stand-alone stories: one for a literary magazine, another for a newspaper, a third for a year-long interactive fan-based Twitter experiment, and a fourth for a BBC Radio 4 production. All are captivating and unique glimpses into the staggeringly creative mind of Neil Gaiman. Most of the previously published stories in this book probably escaped notice by the lion’s share of Gaiman fans. In today’s world, relatively few people read short stories, especially when they’re published in obscure anthologies. By pulling together all his most recent short stories and selling them in one volume, Gaiman will be able to reach a far larger audience. When done well, short stories are the gems of the literary world. Gaiman’s short fiction deserves to be read and treasured. I rediscovered that while reading this book. I’d forgotten how marvelous short stories can be when they’re told by a master storyteller. The collection is aimed at adults, but I’m sure Gaiman’s legions of young adult fans will love this book, too. None of the stories in this collection are appropriate for young children: this is not because they may cause nightmares, but rather because they deal with adult themes that children will not comprehend.I loved this book. It was full of enchanting stories that delightfully disturbed my senses and inhabited my heart. For those of you who may have encountered a good number of Gaiman’s short stories elsewhere, here a list of the stories in this book:Making a ChairA Lunar LabyrinthThe Thing About CassandraDown to a Sunless Sea“The Truth Is a Cave in the Black Mountains…”My Last LandladyAdventure StoryORANGEA Calendar of TalesThe Case of Death and HoneyThe Man Who Forgot Ray BradburyJerusalemClick-Clack the RattlebagAn Invocation of Incuriosity“And Weep, Like Alexander”Nothing O’ClockPearls: A Fairy Tale Kether to MalkurthFeminine EndingsObserving the FormalitiesThe Sleeper and the SpindleWitch WorkIn Relig OdbráinBlack Dog

Vince Guidotti discovered his musical talent at the age of seventeen after a tragic car crash left his lower spine crushed. Facing months of hospitalization and years of physical therapy, he was desperate and near suicidal. His uncle saved his sanity by handing him a trumpet so he may have something to do with his hands. Years later, he is a successful lawyer but his one true passion was playing the trumpet. Iñaki Alvarez had had it all: a highly successful singing career, a loving wife and three beautiful children. A pop singer since he was seventeen, he had been an international superstar for twenty years before suddenly retiring and disappearing from the public eye. Walking into his hotel’s bar one night, he hears soulful jazz music playing. Setting eyes on the attractive but grief worn trumpeter, he never thought this man would be the one to make him experience true love the second time around. Almost a decade later, Vince faces a dilemma: either he proposes marriage to Iñaki the traditional way and face yet another rejection, or he gives in and plays the one song he once vowed never to. Can he set aside his personal misgivings and gift his beloved Iñaki the one thing he had been waiting to hear him play after all these years?

From the critically acclaimed author of Atlas of Unknowns and Aerogrammes, a tour de force set in South India that plumbs the moral complexities of the ivory trade through the eyes of a poacher, a documentary filmmaker, and, in a feat of audacious imagination, an infamous elephant known as the Gravedigger.Orphaned by poachers as a calf and sold into a life of labor and exhibition, the Gravedigger breaks free of his chains and begins terrorizing the countryside, earning his name from the humans he kills and then tenderly buries. Manu, the studious younger son of a rice farmer, loses his cousin to the Gravedigger’s violence and is drawn, with his wayward brother Jayan, into the sordid, alluring world of poaching. Emma is a young American working on a documentary with her college best friend, who witnesses the porous boundary between conservation and corruption and finds herself in her own moral gray area: a risky affair with the veterinarian who is the film’s subject. As the novel hurtles toward its tragic climax, these three storylines fuse into a wrenching meditation on love and betrayal, duty and loyalty, and the vexed relationship between man and nature. With lyricism and suspense, Tania James animates the rural landscapes where Western idealism clashes with local reality; where a farmer’s livelihood can be destroyed by a rampaging elephant; where men are driven to poaching. In James’ arrestingly beautiful prose, The Tusk That Did the Damage blends the mythical and the political to tell a wholly original, utterly contemporary story about the majestic animal, both god and menace, that has mesmerized us for centuries.

Review

“Impressive…captivating…When the stories of the Gravedigger, the poacher and the filmmaker inevitably converge, the novel veers toward a fatalistic irony, but in James’s assured and skillful treatment, the result is stark tragedy.”—New York Times Book Review, Editor’s Choice “The Tusk That Did the Damage is one of the most unusual and affecting books I’ve read in a long time. Narrated by a poacher, a filmmaker, and, most brilliantly, an elephant, this is a compulsively readable, devastating novel. “—Jonathan Safran Foer, author of Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close“Although it has much insight and nuance to add to the [ivory] discourse, James’s inventive new novel has a far broader vision, one that will likely outlast this iteration of the ivory conversation. With remarkable brevity, The Tusk That Did the Damage delves into India’s mythic, troubled history with elephants — a strange marriage of reverence and violence — and asks readers to imagine the incomprehensible, to experience the world, for a few moments, through the eyes of a killer elephant called the Gravedigger.”—Los Angeles Review of Books "This gorgeously written novel is unlike anything I’ve ever read, and unlike anything you’ve ever read too—unless you can tell me honestly you’ve read something with an elephant narrator. (There are a couple human ones too.)…thought-provoking but never feels like heavy lifting."—Glamour Magazine "The Tusk that Did the Damage is spectacular, a pinwheeling multi-perspectival novel with a cast that includes my favorite character of recent memory, ‘the Gravedigger,’ an orphaned homicidal elephant.  Tania James is one of our best writers, and here she is at the height of her powers:  brilliant, hilarious, capable of the most astonishing cross-cultural interspecies ventriloquies and acrobatic leaps of empathy.  You will read this ravishing novel in an afternoon and immediately want to press it on your favorite people."—Karen Russell, author of Swamplandia "The Tusk That Did the Damage is a bighearted, morally complex novel… James skillfully blends the suspense of a thriller and the erotic tensions of two romantic triangles with mythical, mournful flashbacks to Gravedigger’s life and ancestry…Tusk nimbly divulges virtues and vulnerabilities so readers come to empathize with everyone, especially with Gravedigger, the very soul of the novel."—San Francisco Chronicle  "[H]eart-racingly paced, with each perspective taking a chapter in turn—three interwoven stories that converge with a devastating, compelling fatality…This is a story that moves between the humid intensity of southern India’s jungles, the cool assurance of the American’s editing studio, and the elephant’s primordial internal landscape with grace and humour, as light-footed as a poacher."—National Geographic Traveler  "The rural India described by these spiraling voices seems haunted, seeded with gods, ghosts and myth…[James’] elephants loom larger than life."—Washington Post "The Tusk That Did the Damage is a novel of great moral intensity, with the pacing of a thriller. Everyone is implicated. Everyone is righteous. Tania James’ gift, her genius, is to turn this scenario into an occasion for grace."—Julie Otsuka, author of The Buddha in the Attic: "Original and multi-layered … captivating storylines and searing imagery…James conveys a palpable, infectious empathy for an animal that fascinates us from afar, even as she probes the mindset of the disadvantaged people driven to hunt it."—Washington City Paper "TUSK…will leave you breathless as you follow three narrators across the wild plains of India…all illuminate the complexities of the country and culture, and you’ll be stunned by the author’s portrayal of the magnificent, tusked animals central to the characters’ lives."—Time Out NYC "In The Tusk That Did the Damage, James grounds a moral investigation in fallible human (and animal) emotionality: her prose is simple and beautiful, and her characters, both human and pachyderm, are lovingly rendered. But mostly you’ll come away with a dreadfully heightened awareness of our careless destruction of the natural world."    —Bustle Magazine "Utterly enthralling…a story that is bound to leave marks, but the best ones always do."—Suvudu

The Poacher   Everyone in Sitamala thinks they know my brother’s story. On the contrary. They may know the tune, but I would bet a half bag of pepper the words are all wrong. I blame his wife’s people for spreading slander, all those perfidious huge-hipped sisters, not a one half as lovely as Leela. Our father was a rice farmer. He came from a time when to farm was a noble profession, when people sought our gandhakasala and our rosematta for their earthy fragrance superior to the stuff that now comes cheap from Vietnam. Who can remember those times with all these farms lying fallow and many a farmer’s son gone to roost in a soft office chair? And who am I to blame them, I who have seen the Gravedigger for myself and felt its breath like a steam on my face? Some say my brother stepped into the very snare he laid for the elephant. I say opinions are cheap from far. I will take you to the Gravedigger myself and let you meet its honey-colored eye. I will show you the day it first laid its foot on our scrawny lives. Then you tell me who was hunter and who was hunted.     To know our troubles, you must know what happened to my cousin Raghu. When I think on poor Raghu, I see him stoking a small fire. I see him nudging a stick aside so as to let the flames breathe. I have called up this image many a time as if I were with him in the palli as I should have been that night. The palli was a paddy-roofed matchbox on bamboo legs stranded in the midst of his father’s rice field, same as the ones in the neighboring fields. If a herd of elephants were to come glumping their way through the stalks, we were to wave the lantern and give the long caw that would set the others cawing. If this didn’t scare the herd away, we used crackers and rockets. But the herds became wise to our ways. They learned that our racket had no teeth to it, so they kept on eating their way through six months’ worth of our back-bent work. Sometimes we had to call the Forest Department; it would send three or four men to blind the beasts with headlights and fire ancient rifles. We called them greenbacks for their dingy green uniforms and their love of currency. The herds were mostly cows, and they meant no personal harm unless you tampered with a calf. There is no one more fearsome than a mother enraged. In my youth I heard of a cow that cradled the carcass of her baby for days and would not be deprived of it.Now the solo bull could be a very rude intruder. If one of those fellows were to pay us a visit, we were to leap out of the palli and race home. Do not be fooled by the lumps you see at the zoo—the elephant can run! Ask Raghu’s father, who was only twenty years old when a bull elephant discovered him dozing in the palli. Synthetic Achan survived because he knew the elephant has weak eyes. Run straight and you will be trampled. Cut a zig-zag and you may confuse it. Synthetic Achan felt Raghu was too young to sit guard in the palli alone, so he drafted me also. Yet I do not know where I was that night, probably testing my luck with some soft-bottomed girl. What to say. I was nineteen and had discovered that my visage had an effect on certain girls, so to speak. I pretended not to care about my visage, but Raghu needled me about the cream I occasionally raked through my hair. Sometimes he called me Styleking as in: “Eh Styleking, did you bathe in Brylcreem or stick the whole tub up your rump?” “Yamini likes it.” “Up the rump?” “Do not talk of her rump.” “I hear what I hear. And from the particulars, I would not touch her with a boatman’s pole.” We bickered, but there was a comfort to our fuggy odors and the flash of our teeth in the dark. Other times we burrowed into the quiet, each of us privately wondering what kind of future awaited us. I had a habit of dozing, which Raghu allowed to a limit and would shake me awake only if I were to poof. “What is this,” he would shout, flapping his hands about his face, “your personal shithouse?”Whenever he gently tapped me awake, I knew I had been murmuring for my brother, something like Where is Jayan where is he, even though Jayan had been home for six months already. To spare me the shame, Raghu would only say I had been poofing again.   Humble as it was, our palli commanded a five-star view. To the north a phone tower climbed the sky. To the east an owl glared from its bamboo perch, swiveling its head for rodents among the stalks. To the west we watched the sunset pour over the teak- rimmed forest aka Kavanar Wildlife Park. Our people had been walking the forest long before it took that fussy name. The new laws forbid us from doing anything in the park, not walking, not even picking up a finger length of firewood without being fined for trespass and stealing. Stealing from trees that had dropped us fruit and firewood for centuries! Meanwhile, the laws looked kindly on the greenbacks and timber companies, their rows of rosewood, eucalyptus, teak.So I had zero patience for Raghu’s ramblings when he decided to tell all about the spectacle he had witnessed one day prior, starring his brand-new hero: Ravi Varma, Veterinary Doctor. I had never seen this Ravi Varma, M.D., though I had heard of his exploits with the greenbacks, and I was no fan of theirs nor his by association. And what heroic feats had the cow doctor performed to deserve Raghu’s worship? Pulled an elephant calf from a tea ditch, where the wee thing had tripped and fallen much to its mother’s distress.I told Raghu my demented old mammachi could pull an elephant calf from a tea ditch.“Not only that,” Raghu enthused. “The vet doctor got the mother to take back the baby.” Now this part was pure lie. “A mother elephant won’t touch a calf that was handled by humans. Every idiot knows that.” “But she did! And she thanked him after.” “Did they shake hands too?” “And two sayips were there, filming it all. BBC people I think.” This gave me pause. In those days, it was rare to see foreigners in our parts, and we were neither poor enough nor princely enough to appear on Western screens. I was minimally intrigued. What did the BBC want with us?Raghu sighed, still dazzled by the memory of Ravi Varma, M.D. “It was something, Manu, I tell you.”Was Raghu musing about the mother and calf on his final evening? Did that sentimental memory lead him to lay down his guard? I imagine his last and lonesome hour, I see him drifting off, a breath from sleep, before he sits up quick to the snap of a broken branch. In the silence he looks from one doorway to the other. He can open his lungs and caw and set the other pallis cawing, but what if it was only the snap of the fire? He hears me scoffing in his ears: A broken branch in the middle of a field?Raghu hunkers beneath his blanket, hiding from the possibilities. After a noiseless minute he can breathe again, relieved he never set to squawking like some half-brained bird. He draws deep on the comfort of woodsmoke, sure I will come. Until then, he will tend the fire alone.     Excerpted from THE TUSK THAT DID THE DAMAGE by Tania James. Copyright © 2015 by Tania James. I mean, Amazon Vine classified this book as "Humor and Entertainment." Because of this, I expected a satire. However, this is not a funny book. Instead, it is an unexpected journey into the quest for ivory somewhere in India. The book is not about the trade of ivory, but about those at the point of attack. The story focuses on a family of poachers and a film crew documenting the life in these villages around a national park in charge of protecting elephants. Finally, the third story is that of an elephant named Gravedigger. Yes, the novel is also told from the point of view of an elephant.Giving an animal a voice can lead to disaster, but in this novel, it works. Gravedigger becomes a character like the other humans in the story, and in some ways, Gravedigger's chapters were the best part. We do not know what elephants think and feel, but Tania James has created a logical and believe extension of what an elephant might think and feel, and it becomes believable in the context of the rest of the story. It is hard to explain: the elephant is not getting "revenge" in the traditional sense, but in some ways, we root for Gravedigger and accept his actions as being justified. This short novel ends up being about the act of story-telling and cultural relevance. The villagers tell tales of how elephants came to exist, and this myth is passed on even today. We also get the film makers attempting to tell a story while remaining impartial, which in some ways, is impossible when it comes to elephants. And even Gravedigger has a story to tell as he encounters a mixture of kind and/or cruel trainers and owners. Of course, this is all wrapped up in the story that is the book itselfBy the time you finish, you will realize that the book is really not preaching about the evils of illegal ivory trading and the poaching of elephants. In my opinion, the book ends up with the message that if we keep hunting this majestic creatures, there will come a time when none will be left. And that is a future we do not want to see happen. This book really surprised me, and I really enjoyed it. I highly recommend it.

The things we do - and who pays the price By Miss Barbara It is often a dangerous thing to anthropomorphize an animal and make them a protagonist in a book. Tania James, author of The Tusk That Did the Damage, managed to do just that. Her newest book tells the story of a rogue elephant named The Gravedigger who is reaping havoc in the countryside of India. The story is split into three Points of View:1. The Elephant: named Gravedigger who watched his mother killed for nothing more than her tail. In the book the presumption is that he remembers this incident and after a life of exploitation he sets off on his own with both rage and empathy in his heart.2. The Filmmakers: who travel to India to document the lives of the elephants and their dwindling habitat. A romance develops between the girl and Ravi, a renowned Veterinarian who specializes in returning calves to their moms after accidents.3. The Poachers: some of whom benefit from the senseless slaughter, in order to deliver ivory and talismans (tails, ears, etc.) to the next order of profiteers. Other elephant killers are defending their property and family from marauding rogue beasts who attack for the crops that have become the replacement of the elephant's dwindling bamboo food staple. The chapters and story alternate highlighting each of the three protagonists and their perspective of the big picture. Each of the three has a reason to be where they are and to do what they are doing. The fact that the world at large questions their motives is the reason for this insightful book.

Struggled to finish By C'est Moi I decided to really take my time with this one because I didn't want the fact that I've recently encountered a cluster of underwhelming books to be the reason that I was finding this one to be underwhelming as well. After finishing it I have no doubt that it was just this book. The story is told from three perspectives. We have a reluctant poacher and a naïve filmmaker giving first person accounts, while the account of a fearsome serial killer elephant known as Gravedigger is told in third person. Gravedigger is so named because of his tendency to bury his victims.I was far more invested in the elephant's chapters than those about the poacher and filmmaker. Learning more about this sad and unusual character was what kept the story going. Unfortunately for me, it felt like Gravedigger's chapters were too few and far between even though they're actually every third chapter. Other than the elephant's chapters there were two short folktales nestled within the story that I found interesting. The rest I struggled through. My first red flag went up when the filmmaker's love life was brought up. Her personal drama was silly and boring. It merged with the overarching story, eventually, sort of, but the connection wasn't strong enough for her chapters to be so long and detailed. I found the poacher to be a more interesting and complex character, and yet his story is also filled with banalities that quickly made me lose interest.Overall I'd say it was the plot that disagreed with me most. Too many aspects either felt excessive or underdeveloped. As short as the book is, it would have been better as a much shorter story (perhaps with the filmmaker left out).

He is at the age where he is starting to trace letters and numbers at school, so it's been a fun way for him to practice at home. He loves Santa and everything Christmas...and there are pictures you can color as well. It's a great book for beginners. The pages are filled with traceable letters and numbers, so they will never run out! I highly recommend :)

He loves that it's Santa themed and has been practicing his letters so he can write his own letter to Santa this year. At the same time he enjoys coloring in the pictures which is a good creative break. Perfect!!
