3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Loved the movie, but the book is just ok By E. Bateman The movie was a beautiful story of an epic journey, and I'm a sucker for such stories, having been on an epic journey myself. I was hoping the book would capture some of that essence in an age-appropriate way. But the book focused more on the facts of the movie. It felt more like an illustrated book report than the story of hoped it would be.

Four years ago, the Eternal Slumber Funeral Home put Chicken Teater in the ground. Now undertaker Emma Lee Raines is digging him back up. The whole scene is bad for business, especially with her granny running for mayor and a big festival setting up in town. But ever since Emma Lee started seeing ghosts, Chicken's been pestering her to figure out who killed him.

With her handsome boyfriend, Sheriff Jack Henry Ross, busy getting new forensics on the old corpse, Emma Lee has time to look into her first suspect. Chicken's widow may be a former Miss Kentucky, but the love of his life was another beauty queen: Lady Cluckington, his prize-winning hen. Was Mrs. Teater the jealous type? Chicken seems to think so. Something's definitely rotten in Sleepy Hollow—and Emma Lee just prays it's not her luck.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Funny to the grave! By Kelly Maldia *I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.*A Ghostly Grave is the second book in the Ghostly Southern Mysteries. The story picks up shortly after A Grave Undertaking ends. While it would be helpful to have read A Grave Undertaking before A Ghostly Gave, you do not have to. There is enough details in this story to not read book 1. The story is about Emma Lee Raines. She is a Betweener medium, who can see ghosts of people who have been murdered, and they seek her out to find their murderers. The story picks up with the exhumation of Colonel “Chicken” Teater’s body by Emma Lee at the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, and her boyfriend and town sheriff John Henry. Emma Lee has seen Chicken and he told her he was murdered. Emma Lee and John Henry are going to find out who murdered him.The book was a quick read. I was engrossed in the story and finished it about 3 hours. The story was funny. How can it not be funny when you have a former beauty pageant winner and a man who has an abnormal love for his prize chicken, Lady Cluckington! Add in outlandish behavior from Granny Zula, drama from the Ladies Auxiliary, dripping spray on hair, and a bad makeover, and you have some funny stuff.Yet through all the humor, I still don’t know who Emma Lee is. In the last book, I didn’t get to know her and I was hoping I would learn more about her or who she is evolving to be. Yes, she is a funeral director and a Betweener. She isn’t as pretty as her sister according to everyone, including herself. Everyone else thinks she’s crazy with “funeral trauma” because of getting hit in the head by Santa. With all this craziness happening to her, you would think she would evolve, grow as a person. I saw glimpses of it in this book. I hope to see more in the next. Maybe this book isn’t about her growth as a person. It’s just a funny paranormal mystery book. I think if we saw who Emma Lee was and who she is to become, it would give it a 5 star quality.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Ghostly Southern Hit By T. Lenz I chose to read this novel in two sittings because I wanted to make it last. There lies the issue with Tonya Kappes' writing, you don't want to put it down.If you like a little comedy in your mystery, this is your book. If your like a little mystery with your Southern sass, this is your book. If you think you're not alone, this is your book.I am into the romance between Emma and her sheriff. I am more into chickens than I ever was. I'm thinking that it takes a lot of creativity to link yoga, beauty pageants and spelunking in one novel. There you have it. Curious? I hope so.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. More ghostly fun By laurathomas61 This is the second book in The Ghostly Southern Mysteries Series and is just as fun as the first book.Emma first began seeing ghosts when a plastic Santa fell off the roof of Artie’s deli and meat the and knocked her out cold. When she came to in the hospital Chicken Teater was there. That couldn’t be as his body had been seen to at her very own funeral home, Eternal Slumber, and she’d seen him buried.Everyone in town saw her talking to a ghost and just scratched it off as crazy Emma and her ‘funeral trauma, kind of like PTSD.Emma soon learns it’s not just hallucinations and is caught up in the murder of Ruthie, her grandma’s nemesis. That placed Zula Fae right in the crosshairs of sexy Sheriff Jack Henry, Emma’s school crush. Emma, with the help of Ruthie’s ghost, sticks her pretty little nose into the investigation as more people are attacked. That first ghostly case lands her where she is now. When Ruthie Sue finally moved on to wherever ghosts go, she started telling other ghosts that hadn’t moved on about Emma’s gift as a Betweener medium. She can see and here the ghosts of murdered people that are stuck and can’t move on. Just what Emma needs. She helped solve Ruthie Sue’s murder and now she’s sending her clients from the beyond. So now she stands by the grave of Chicken Teater, local chicken farmer, as his casket is being exhumed. Her list of suspects is vast as pretty much the whole town is gawking behind the police tape.Could it be Chicken’s widow, Marla Maria, the beauty queen? Could it be she was jealous of the competition from Mrs. Cluckington, Chicken’s prize winning hen? As Emma looks at all of the faces, she has her work cut out for her.The Kentucky Cave Festival is gearing up to begin and Emma wants to get this case wrapped up faster than you can say Bees on a Bicycle.I think it’s sweet how one glimpse into Jack Henry’s eyes can make the butterflies flutter in Emma’s stomach. She’s smitten and so is he. These too are so cute together. There’s no lacking in colorful, quirky characters and the fun and mystery just keeps on rolling. Feathers fly as Emma leaves no tomb stone unturned to get to the bottom of it.You don’t have to read the first book to dip your toes into this one, but I’d say grab the first book too and get twice the fun from the beginning.I received this book for my honest review.

Best Ebook The Woodcarver's Secret: Complement to the bestselling Samantha Sweet mystery series (Samantha Sweet Magical Cozy Mystery Series), by Connie Shelton

Connie Shelton’s bestselling Samantha Sweet mystery series begins when Samantha is given an ancient carved wooden box from a woman reputed to be a bruja, a witch. Immersed in the series, readers have wondered: Where did the box come from? When did it become magical? How does Samantha receive its powers? The history of the box begins on a summer day in 13th century Ireland when a simple Celtic woodworker takes a walk past a near-dead alder tree. Lightning strikes. With the shattered tree lying all around him, John Carver pulls himself up and decides to make the best of it—he takes the usable pieces to his workshop. From the shards of that dead tree John creates three boxes. Then the unexplained happens—shortly after handling one of them, John’s touch brings his young son back from the brink of death. When the second box demonstrates an opposite tendency, toward the dark side, Carver is terrified that witch-hunters will learn of the boxes and their mystical powers. Eager to rid himself of the artifacts and desperate for money, he sells the three boxes. As they are taken by three very different buyers—a common Englishman, a worldly merchant and a bishop—John feels a foreboding about the future. From the 13th century, the boxes travel the world, eventually drawing the attention of two rival organizations, each with very different motives and methods for gaining what they want. Reminiscent of The Red Violin in scope, this historical novel follows the three boxes to the 21st century and confrontation between the two factions. The Woodcarver’s Secret is the prequel and companion novel to Connie Shelton’s Samantha Sweet paranormal cozy mystery series. The Midwest Book Review says: “Connie Shelton gets better with every book she writes.” Praise for Connie’s previous books: “... delightfully complex mystery.” —Romantic Times “... always a good read...” —Southwest Book Views “…transcends the series and becomes a remarkable book in its own right.” –MossRose, 5 star review “I’m addicted to this series!” --Mollie W. 5 star review “Great series. Holds your interest and leaves you wanting more.” --Paula K. 5 stars

5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Fascinating pseudo history of Samantha Sweet's magical box! By Illinois Reader The "Woodcarver's Secret" is a fascinating pseudo history of 3 carved boxes made from wood of a tree that was struck by lightening hundreds of years ago. One of the boxes is featured in the Samantha Sweet series also written by Connie Shelton. From the lightening strike to the present, the journeys of the boxes are followed, and sometime ownership becomes confused. But there was no confusion reading this accounting, and I had to keep reminding myself it was fictional. When I started reading the book, I was afraid it wouldn't hold my interest as well as other books Ms Shelton has written. However, the more I read, the more eager I was to finish the book and learn as much as I could about Samantha's box.The book adds depth to the mystery of the box and it's healing powers throughout the series. Each person who handled the box seemed to be a real person in the past. The intensity of the book left me slightly stunned-as though I witnessed all that happened first hand. Ms Shelton has out done herself with this book. I can only recommend that you read it for yourself and be swept away in this creative history lesson. Kudos to Ms Shelton!

This book is more like a history book and isn't really By Leonaiya This book is more like a history book and isn't really, to me, to be a suspenseful thriller. It is the story of the various boxes carved by John Carter in ancient times and follows the progression of where these various boxes wind up through the years (particularly Virtu, which winds up in the possession of Samantha Sweet)., and how these boxes impacted the people who had possession of them. Well worth reading.

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. How Samantha Sweet got her groove (and her box) back By The SkyWriter Here we have a historical novel about three characters named Virtu, Facinor & Manichee, and their wonderful adventures through the crises, wars, social upheavals and human progress of five centuries. Of course no humans live through five centuries, but then these three characters aren’t human: they’re wood boxes carved from the same Alder tree by an Irishman named, what else, John Carver sometime prior to the Spanish Inquisition. Readers are given a not so subtle hint at the power these three boxes contain through their origin. John Carver acquires the wood for them after lightning shatters a certain tree. This atavistic, dendritic heritage carries through the remainder of the book, revealing itself even at the end through sophisticated scientific analysis. Each box has its own subtle powers: Virtu (from Latin for good) delivers good things; Facinor (from Latin Facere, to do evil) brings bad things; Manichee (Referring to a dualistic quasi-religious concept) acts as the chameleon-like reflector of the box owner’s intentions, either good or bad. Labeled so, each box launches on its own particular voyage doing what it does best. Virtu heals ailments and injuries; Facinor creates havoc; Manichee becomes an intermediary, a facilitator. The book takes us on a journey all over the world, each box coming into the hands of people who seem always to know just what power they hold.‘The Woodcarver’s Secret’ is an ambitious, well-researched, engaging novel that departs quite a bit from Connie Shelton’s usual fare. Not to say Ms Shelton’s past efforts have been unsatisfying, far from it, she writes very well, and clearly keeps her faithful readership awaiting the next Samantha Sweet or Charlie Parker mystery. But ‘The Woodcarver’s Secret’ is a radical departure from those books. It marks a level of writing that may send Connie Shelton into a different plane, putting her books on a different shelf.Reminiscent of Annie Proulx’ s ‘Accordion Crimes,’ or Bernard Malamud’s 1952 novel ‘The Natural,’ ‘The Woodcarver’s Secret’ traces objects from Ireland, to Inquisition Spain and its Conversos to a fellow named Rodrigo who spies for the Spanish king prior to the Armada invasion of England in 1588. From Seville the boxes separate, one vanishing into the Vatican, another off to Mexico and the third? It vanishes altogether for centuries.Mixed in with the travels (and travails) attached to each box are the people who come in contact with them. Historical figures give readers a taste and a feel for the great events of history: the Spanish conquest of Mexico, ‘Texian’ Independence,’ the peripatetic life of a painter and his family—indeed of two painter’s families two oceans and two hundred years apart. One box finds its way into the hands of, gasp, Adolph Hitler! We even travel with one box by balloon over the Gulf of Mexico. This is a Connie Shelton book, after all, and it’s clever how she installed her balloon in the tale.We gain insights into personal stories from the Panama Canal, World War 1, class struggle after the great war and on and on. We find satisfying, if possibly a bit precious, tie-ups for certain boxes. Bertha bequeaths Virtu to a woman named Samantha Sweet, a title character from other Shelton offerings. And Manichee hides behind a hastily built brick wall along with priceless wine belonging to a German family wishing to hide their product from the Nazis. Of course the youngster returns thirty years on to see the wall come down, a possible reference to the Berlin wall, and finds his beloved box still nestling there, along with the family heritage, several cases of Bernkasteler Kabinett which, by the way, is a real premium German wine. Ms Shelton has done her homework.‘The Woodcarver’s Secret’ is not without minor flaws. Yes, the chronology does become obvious, but establishing a start date would have been useful. The book dwells on Virtu, the ‘good box,’ somewhat to the exclusion of the other two, though this device may have been necessary in such an ambitious work. It’s not easy to keep track of the human characters, but many are peripheral, and the transience of humans may amplify the role of the main characters, the boxes. The book comes to center on the historical struggle between science and superstition, between the Catholic Church and an agency called ‘The Vongraf Foundation’ dedicated to objective analysis of mysterious, inexplicable phenomena. Using the age-old struggle between religion and science, ‘The Woodcarver’s Secret’ explores this challenge through its detective story framework, the book’s climax defined by the clash of these two entities. After many years, all three boxes meet again, the mystery not quite solved but then that leaves room for sequels, of course. No secrets revealed in this review, you’ll have to read the book. If you enjoy well-crafted, well researched and well written historical fiction, ‘The Woodcarver’s Secret’ will capture your imagination.

56 of 62 people found the following review helpful. So over the top! By C. McClellan This book drops the reader abruptly into the action, a fairly common device when introducing new characters and settings in a novel. However, this book never stops throwing in new characters, new plotlines, new events, and so much more until you are overwhelmed and confused. The author seems to have dragged in every device ever used in approximately this time period in every mystery she has ever read. It is just too much! The novel needed a good editor to strip out the extraneous materials and subplots, or at least have the author relegate them to other books in the series. Not everything single possibility has to be dragged out in book 1! I tried to describe this book to another person when I was near the end of it, and we found ourselves laughing hysterically by the time I was halfway through. It's ridiculous. Short of a deus ex machina or an alien invasion, this book has everything: runaway servants with complex and suspicious histories who move (more or less without question) from one lead character to another to another; possible horse thievery; a hero who is confused about whom he really loves; engagements across family lines; family members (too many to list) at odds for various extremely complicated reasons; illicit affairs of both hetero- and homosexual varieties; rape and near rape; dead bodies strewn about; brothels of all sorts; beatings; blackmail; financial chicanery; bastards scattered about--you name it, it's in there. It was all just far, far too much and overwhelmed a halfway decent story. It's really too bad, because I think it could have been a pretty good book. With everything and the kitchen sink, it's a sorry mess.

Deadly Engagement (An Alec Halsey Mystery) By shinergirl A reviewer recommended this novel if the reader was a fan of Sebastian St. Cyr or Julian Krestel. Those two names were all I needed to purchase this book and I am so glad I did! Having read all of the Sebastian St. Cyr series and searching for Julian Krestel novels until they are published in Kindle format, I have been searching for similar works and happily stumbled across this wonderful novel after doing a "historical mystery" search.Twist and turns abound in this historial mystery set in the late 1700's. Alec Halsey, second son has returned after performing diplomatic work overseas only to discover that his elder brother has become betrothed to his intended. To say that his elder brother despises him is an understatement and it appear early on that that Lord Delvin will do whatever it takes to discredit, ruin and run his brother out of town. Murder abounds at a house party to celebrate Lord Delvin and Emily's engagement, where no one seems to be as they appear. Wonderful mystery, attention to detail and lush descriptions take the reader back in time. I will definately check out this author's other works. If you are looking for something new to read until the next Sebastian St. Cyr or Lady Julia Grey book is published. Take a chance and add this to your wish list. You will be glad to find another series to become enamored with. I know I am.

But this is ridiculous. The characters have zero believability or even consistency. They are one dimensional and wooden, each reduced to a single descriptive word. The hero is not appealing either; he isn't even interesting. He appears to randomly fall in love with women who are then taken away from him by his evil brother. Evidently, the hero simply rolls over and takes it, and the women are shallow witted idiots who have zero depth whatsoever. Even the romantic scenes make little sense and are boring.I bought this because it was compared to the Sebastian St Cyr series. Other than the fact that Sebastian's name is Devlin, and this family's name is Delvin, there is NOTHING like St. Cyr series here. Do. Not. Waste. Your. Money.

New York Times Notable Book * NPR Best Books 2015 * Wall Street Journal Best Books of 2015 The acclaimed author of The Good German “deftly captures the ambience” (The New York Times Book Review) of postwar East Berlin in his “thought-provoking, pulse-pounding” (Wall Street Journal) New York Times bestseller—a sweeping spy thriller about a city caught between political idealism and the harsh realities of Soviet occupation.Berlin, 1948. Almost four years after the war’s end, the city is still in ruins, a physical wasteland and a political symbol about to rupture. In the West, a defiant, blockaded city is barely surviving on airlifted supplies; in the East, the heady early days of political reconstruction are being undermined by the murky compromises of the Cold War. Espionage, like the black market, is a fact of life. Even culture has become a battleground, with German intellectuals being lured back from exile to add credibility to the competing sectors. Alex Meier, a young Jewish writer, fled the Nazis for America before the war. But the politics of his youth have now put him in the crosshairs of the McCarthy witch-hunts. Faced with deportation and the loss of his family, he makes a desperate bargain with the fledgling CIA: he will earn his way back to America by acting as their agent in his native Berlin. But almost from the start things go fatally wrong. A kidnapping misfires, an East German agent is killed, and Alex finds himself a wanted man. Worse, he discovers his real assignment—to spy on the woman he left behind, the only woman he has ever loved. Changing sides in Berlin is as easy as crossing a sector border. But where do we draw the lines of our moral boundaries? At betrayal? Survival? Murder? Joseph Kanon’s compelling thriller is a love story that brilliantly brings a shadowy period of history vividly to life.

Leaving Berlin: A Novel, by Joseph Kanon

Review “Engaging. . . . deftly captures the ambience of a city that’s still a wasteland almost four years after the Nazis’ defeat. . . . Kanon keeps the story humming along, enriching the main narrative with vignettes that heighten the atmosphere of duplicity and distrust.” (The New York Times Book Review)“Joseph Kanon’s thought-provoking, pulse-pounding historical espionage thriller [is] stuffed with incident and surprise. . . . Mr. Kanon, author now of seven top-notch novels of period political intrigue, conveys the bleak, oppressive, and creepy atmosphere of occupied Berlin in a detailed, impressive manner. . . . Leaving Berlin is a mix of tense action sequences, sepia-tinged reminiscence, convincing discourse and Berliner wit.” (Wall Street Journal)“The old-fashioned spy craft, the many plot twists and the moral ambiguities that exist in all of the characters make Leaving Berlin an intriguing, page-turning thriller. There’s also a star-crossed love story — and an airport farewell — that might remind some readers of Bogie and Bergman. But it’s the author’s attention to historical detail — his ability to convey the sights, sounds and feel of a beaten-down Berlin — that makes this book so compelling.” (Ft. Worth Star Telegram)"Kanon, who writes his novels at the New York Public Library, conjures from there a Berlin of authentic menace and such hairpin turns that Leaving Berlin evokes comparisons to John LeCarre and Alan Furst. Such good company." (New York Daily News)“Not for nothing has Kanon – whose previous books include The Good German, which was made into a film starring George Clooney and Cate Blanchett, has been compared to the suspense masters Graham Greene and John LeCarre. He’s certainly in the ballpark.” (Buffalo News)“A pleasure from start to finish, blending literary finesse with action, this atmospheric historical thriller will appeal not only to Kanon’s many fans but to those who enjoy Alan Furst, Philip Kerr, and other masters of wartime and postwar espionage fiction.” (Library Journal (starred))“Another compelling, intellectually charged period piece byKanon, who works in the shadows of fear as well as anyone now writing.” (Kirkus Reviews)“Kanon, like Alan Furst, has found a landscape and made it his own. In fact, the two writers make outstanding bookends in any collection of WWII fiction, Furst bringing Paris just before and during the war to vivid life, and Kanon doing the same for Berlin in its aftermath.” (Booklist)“Story, suspense, substance, and style are inextricably linked in a work that masterfully exploits and exquisitely transcends spy-genre possibilities.” (Washington Independent Review of Books)INTERNATIONAL PRAISE FOR LEAVING BERLIN:  “If you are looking for a combination of le Carre and Graham Greene, Leaving Berlin will do the trick perfectly. . . . One of the most exciting books I have read for years.” (Alexander McCall Smith, Mail on Sunday (London), named Book of the Year)“Galloping and compulsive…I can’t imagine anyone putting it down…. Admirably atmospheric, the picture of the ravaged Berlin excellently done… An enjoyable thriller,high-class entertainment.” (Allan Massie, the Scotsman)“An unforgettable picture of a city wrecked by defeat and riddled withbetrayal. Brilliant." (Kate Saunders, The Times)“Kanon brings the hardships and moral decay of post-war Berlin to lifein glorious detail, ratcheting up the suspense as Meier tries to escape the netclosing in on all sides. Absorbing.” (Sunday Express)

Kanon knows the period, the politics and the traps that people fell into, their instinctive solidarity with socialism enmeshing them in the messy business of a soviet occupation. Alex Meier, a Jewish writer who fled Germany after being briefly imprisoned by the Nazis (and set free by a bribe) has been living in LA. His marriage in tatters, he has a 10 year old American son. He is forced to leave the U.S., deported and makes a secret deal with the CIA that he can come back after a period of reporting back on other exile artists, who have fled or otherwise returned to Germany. Of course then everything goes haywire. He is being betrayed, but by whom? The young brother of a former friend who died in Spain turns up as an East German political cop. A former lover is sleeping with a Russian officer yet acts very seductive with Alex. His case officer seems hostile. He has to deal with ex Nazi doctors and cops, as well as a German POW who's escaped from the mines. Berthold Brecht and his group are in the background of the Kulturbund, artists cultivated by East Germany to present a cultivated face on the new post-Nazi German nation. Meier has to act and think fast, and quickly realizes that he is on his own and there is perhaps nobody he can trust. It is helpful if you know the background of the postwar period, and are familiar a bit with Brecht, as well as the German film industry. But the plot moves quickly. I found myself almost skipping meals to find out what happens next. Yes it is almost a bit too much to be real, but it is fiction, and at the end it is satisfying as Kanon wraps it all up with the skill of a Dashiel Hammett. Kanon has written some great books earlier, but this may be his best.

By Jesse Kornbluth American media loves horse races, which is a good reason to avoid watching political pundits on cable TV. Book reviewers have resisted this reductionist way of considering writers, but in recent years I’ve seen Alan Furst and Joseph Kanon often mentioned in the same sentence. Furst is generally regarded as America’s master of the historical spy novel, but Kanon has, with each book, steadily gained ground.“Leaving Berlin” is a big book that will put Kanon even with Furst, or maybe ahead. (For me, “big” means 371 pages.) It’s got a terrific plot hook — Alex Meier, a German-Jewish writer who fled the Nazis, gets into political trouble in the United States, and, in 1949, at the height of the Berlin Airlift, returns to live in his native city. If he can give useful information to American spymasters, he can return to Los Angeles and his young son; as he’s not a writer of spy thrillers, he’s a bit over his head.Kanon has written about postwar Berlin before — 'The Good German' is set there. (It became a movie, starring George Clooney and Cate Blanchett.) The grey chill of the cover photo is also in Kanon’s prose; on every page, you feel the shabbiness of the housing, the shortage of food and electricity, and, mostly, the oppressive presence of the Russians. It’s a bitter irony; the Nazi thugs have been replaced by Russian goons. Idealism? The new Socialist paradise? By 1949, even the most dedicated Socialists know better: “Nobody ever said it would be easy… A just society must be worth a few sacrifices, no?”Alex Meier arrives with a realist’s view of the East German authorities. (In Washington, he’d been grilled by Joe McCarthy’s interrogators. “He’d seen the faces before, the jowls and smirks, when they’d been Nazis.”) He is less armored against friends from his much happier early years, and it’s no surprise that he takes up with a woman who was his first lover. But in a Kanon novel, identity is a mask. People are rarely who they seem to be. His lover, especially, but really, everyone. (Even Bertolt Brecht, a prickly genius of astonishing selfishness, isn’t quite as offensive — he rarely bathed and stank like a badger — as historical accounts describe him.)Because almost everyone has at least two faces, the book is an onion that slowly gets peeled. For veteran readers of thrillers, this will be pure pleasure. For me, it’s a challenge — my novel has three major characters, and they struggle with their single identities. But with each Kanon novel, I’m getting smarter. Soon I may, like some of you, be able to read his elegant, complex novels without gasping every few pages.

After the war, before the Wall By Maine Colonial I've always enjoyed Joseph Kanon's books, which are thrillers set in various places around the world, but all taking place shortly after World War II. Kanon mines that same ground over and over because it's one of the richest veins of material you could ever hope to find. The war has ended, but not the fighting. It is just a different kind of war game, with the players shifted around. No more Allies fighting Nazis; now it's the Cold War, with Berlin being dead center in the new conflict.Alex Meier, the novel's protagonist, had been a celebrated young novelist in Germany in the 1930s. Alex was a Social Democrat with a Jewish father, and neither one of those were good things to be once the Nazis took over. But he was friends with the younger members of the powerful von Bernuth family, and their father got Alex out of the country before it was too late. Alex's parents never got out.Alex made a new home in the US, married and had a son. Then, along came the Red Scare and, suddenly, a young German socialist was in danger from the government yet again. To avoid being deported from the US permanently and losing all contact with his son, Alex agrees to act as a US government agent by returning to Berlin for a time; in particular to the Soviet Occupied Zone, where several other leftist German exiles had returned, the most prominent being playwright Berthold Brecht. Alex's assignment is to provide information about his friends in the new Germany, and if he does a good job, the promise is that he can return to the US.Berlin in 1949 was about the most interesting place imaginable. Interesting in the usual sense, but also in the sense of the old curse, "May you live in interesting times." The city was divided into four occupation zones for each of the Allied powers, but there was no Berlin Wall yet. Tensions between the Soviets and the other Allies were increasing by the day, as the Soviets tried to squeeze the Allies out of the city, deep within the eastern half of the country, which the Soviets planned as a satellite state.Along with the political and military Cold War, there was also a so-called Cultural Cold War. The Soviets and the West vied for superiority in literature, music, theater and all the other arts. The Soviets lavished privileges on artists who could burnish the reputation of communism around the world. Alex, who is well remembered as a novelist, is welcomed warmly in the Soviet Occupied Zone and treated as a valued member of the new socialist dream society. As an instantly prominent artist comrade, he can eat and drink off ration at the Kulturbund and is awarded a nice apartment all to himself, with a view to the street rather than the drab rear.Alex quickly finds that Berlin is full of secrets and lies, with danger and betrayal all around him. This is no longer the city of his youth. His childhood home is rubble and his old and new friends may not be what they seem. Alex's reconnecting with his old love, Irene von Bernuth, who is now the mistress of a high-level Soviet military man, excites his US intelligence contacts, but it endangers Alex's heart and much more. What was supposed to be a quick and easy job soon turns deadly dangerous, and Alex must rely on his wits to save himself and those he still feels loyal to.I've read a lot of espionage thrillers, but this one has one of the most satisfyingly twisty-turny plots ever; enough to make your head spin and heart pound. Along with the complex and exciting plot, Kanon delivers a large cast of realistic characters, starting with Alex, but also including childhood friends (especially Irene von Bernuth), Soviet officers, Alex's minder from the Party, intelligence contacts and more. Kanon also has a gift for invoking the atmosphere of the ruined city and what Berliners do to survive in the new reality. This is Kanon's second book set in Berlin, with the first being The Good German, made into the movie starring George Clooney and Cate Blanchett. This is a very different story, but also one that would make a terrific film. I feel sure of that, because Kanon's powerfully evocative writing turned it into a tale that played out in my head as a movie while I was reading.Another particular strength of the book is the focus on the return to East Berlin of so many members of the cultural and intellectual elite who missed their homeland and were true believers in the communist cause. They included Brecht and writers like Arnold Zweig, Anna Seghers and Stefan Heym.Initially celebrated and given privileges not available to others in the workers' state, the returnees who spent the Nazi years in the West, rather than in Moscow, soon found their situations changed. Stalin and his henchmen began an "anti-cosmopolitan" campaign in 1950, targeting those who had spent time in the West. Many were expelled from the Communist Party, imprisoned on trumped-up charges and worse. If you'd like to read more on the subject, you might try Edith Anderson's Love in Exile: An American Writer's Memoir of Life in Divided Berlin. Or, to read about Bertold Brecht's tumultuous history with his native country, as well as his friends, colleagues and lovers, check out a new book by Pamela Katz: Brecht, Weill, Three Women, and Germany on the Brink.Note: Thanks to the publisher for providing a review copy, via NetGalley.

Review "It was funny and irreverant like Wallbanger, but deep and moving like Barbara Elsbourg's Strangers. That is a tough mix to pull off. I should warn you though, this book should come with a surgeon general's warning: 'Do not start this book if you have any where to be, anything to do or need to pretend to be remotely interested in conversations with breathing human beings that are not currently also reading this book.' Enjoy!" -- Amazon reader review"Random Acts of Crazy one of the best if not the best books I've read in a long time. Could not put it down. I laugh so hard my side hurt. Thank God I didn't pee myself!! Congratulations on such an awesome read." -- Goodreads reader review"Be warned, this is not your mother's romance. It's hard and gritty and smacks you in the face like that burst of heat when you first open an oven door, which is exactly what makes it a refreshing change from a typical sticky sweet love story." -- Featured Staff Pick from Cat at All Romance eBooks"If you want something to lift your day, give you some guffaws and plunge you into some hot and steamy scenes, you can't go wrong buying this series. RANDOM ACTS OF FANTASY is like a hot bag of kettle corn; salty, sweet and great for a snack. It made me laugh so hard that I cried. It was sensitive, heartwarming and hysterical. It was spectacular and Julia Kent outdid herself on this one. By Meme43 You can tell from the very first paragraph of the first book that this is definitely an adult comedy series. I mean how does that even ever happen! The stories tell of self-discovery, questions, answers, misunderstanding, understanding and love... lots of love with the members of the band, Random Acts of Crazy, Crazy Funny!!!!Julia Kent tells the story in First Person but she doesn't just write one point of view. She gives each character an opportunity to speak their mind, lay out their feelings. It's really cool.Check it out for yourself with this boxed set and you'll want to read the other books in this series. Each book could be read as a stand alone HOWEVER you won't want to miss a one.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. HAWT rockers, cool chick! By peggy thokar Darla is one of my favorite heroines of all time. She is kick-ass, take no prisoners and wise beyond her years. Yet her heart is so big and tender she has room for not one but two hunky heroes, Trevor and Joe. Julia Kent never fails to deliver off the charts hilarity, and from the opening scene this series delivers all the laughs you expect. I love laughing with her characters and watching them grow into their romantic best through mishap and mayhem. The Massachusetts setting is spot on for the kind of suburban pretensions Darla. from Ohio, can skewer. And the rock star vibe from Trevor and Joe and the guys in the band is hawt! I can't recommend this series enough; you'll read it again and again!

5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. LOVE!! By Cindy #1 Only Darla can pick a guy up on the side of the road, who happens to be as naked as the day he was born. Then when Joe comes to pick up Trevor boy do things get interesting! A book of treasures that induce non stop laughter.#2 Sam hasn't seen Amy in years and then he runs into her again! Will things work out this time or will the past make things impossible? This book had me laughing so hard I was crying. It has just the right mix of crying and laughing that makes you mad when you finish.#3 This book includes great humor, sizzling love scenes, and an manic ex lover! I can't even begin to tell you how much I love Julia's books.

Henry Tudor is in the winter of his reign. He is without a male heir, and the future of the English throne hangs in the balance. Powerful men, such as Cromwell, Lord Percy and the Dukes of Norfolk and Suffolk vie for power. Into this world rides Captain Will Draper, a soldier fresh from the wars, and with an important message. Cardinal Wolsey is dead. Intrigue follows intrigue, and Will finds himself in a race to uncover a murderer. The politics and chicanery of court life threaten to ruin his investigation, and leave the way clear for the most heinous crime of all. This is the debut novel of Anne Stevens, and captures Tudor England in all its moods: Palaces, fine houses, Bawds, rich nobles and the poorest, all mingle to create an atmospheric book that entwines historical fact with fast paced fiction. Winter King is a whodunnit not to be missed.
